I have found his class to be fun. Loads of information for an intro though But I learn alot.
I can see why students would like Charles. He is funny, personable, and has knowledge on a lot of things. However, take his classes ONLY if you are prepared to study. He gives no multiple choice and only essay questions which can be difficult unless you study and know your stuff.
Great class. Engaging, interesting, but pretty easy as long as you study.
Charles has been much more entertaining and knowledgeable than most professors I have had. I would recommend him. sometimes he can be all over the place with lectures, but you learn a lot!
My experience is the same; entertaining and knowledgable--and definately WAYY all over the place. Can really expand on so many subjects. One thing I did not like was that his power points did not have pictures and were also all over the place. I liked all the videos thoough. Overall I would recommend him--and he's extremely helpful after class:-)
Fantastic lecturer! Always injects comic relief into the class when the subject is dry. I do not think I would have enjoyed this course with other professors teaching it. Great videos help with the material too.
Makes a painfully boring subject hilarious and fun. Takes attendance every day with a random question. Always there to answer questions in class, online, in office hours, etc... Very sarcastic and has a lot of jokes to make class fun. Lots of short videos and interesting articles rather than standard "Textbook" type readings. Must take professor!
He is a great guy, the only thing I had a hard time with was the fact that his expectations are unclear. Every class he teaches involves a paper that is no less than twelve pages. His attempt to teach such dry subject matter deserves applaud. Good luck, because it is a required course.
THe Best instructor ever. His class is not easy but you learn so much. He is very open minded. There is alot of reading like 100+pages a day, but interesting stuff. I highly recommend him
I learned so much in this class, if you are interested in the subject you will benefit from the lectures. Never boring, always insightful, and engaging. A rare professor, wish there were more like him.
Professor is extremely informative. He is by far one of the greatest teachers I know. His teaching style allows you to view things in a very complex spectrum that prepares you for not only the class but additional situations.
I took him for few classes. Best instructor at ASU. Very open-minded and interesting. Not an easy class but if you go to class(attendace mandatory), do blackboard questions every week, read your stuff (about 150 pages a week), you will be fine and will get an easy A.
Charles is upbeat, sarcastic, knowledgeable, joyfully self-deprecating and a good professor. Encourages class participation. There is however a lot of reading(s), though also films, documentaries, debates and discussions. He was able to make a rather depressing subject interesting and engaging.
One of the most colorful professors I've ever taken. Class was difficult, but he made it fun and bearable. Show up, make sure he knows who you are, and you'll be just fine.
Dr. Ripley is very interested in U.S. foreign policy and wants his students to succeed. I took the course during a 5 1/2 week summer session which required a lot of reading, two lengthy discussion boards posts each week, a weekly quiz, a three quesion essay midterm, and a ten page paper at the end. By no means an easy A, but an attainable one.
Smart guy, really helpful when you had any questions. Willing to work with you if necessary. Class is difficult, but as long as you complete the discussion boards and papers you'll most likely get an A or B. A lot of time is spent in this class
Very sarcastic and knowledgeable about both subjects. Is always willing to help and make sure you understand. Goes off on irrelevant tangents sometimes, but overall a good teacher.
helpful
Very interesting foreign policy course. Ripley was helpful when I asked questions and flexible with getting assignments in.
This class had alot of work in the beginning but towards the end it evened out. 2 discussion boards per week which consisted of answering around 10 questions. In addition to that there was a weekly quiz of 10 questions, virtual debate, simulation study, midterm and final paper. Ripley is a very fair grader and will work with you.
Great Professor! Very funny. Overall the class helps you discover all the different careers associated with global studies. Most assignments are just checked based on completion and good grammar. Don't worry about this class besides showing up which is half your grade (attendance is taken at the beginning of every class)
A funny and engaging professor. I really enjoyed the structure of the course and the variety of readings/assignments. The best large class (75+) I have ever taken.
Best teacher I've ever had
he takes attendance every class so go! His lectures are all about jobs etc, no test, weekly discussion boards and 3 assignments for whole semester, a breeze, and he grades easy, i don't think i deserved full credit on the things i turned in and i did. ... no text book, all readings online, you can get away with out reading too
Interesting course on international economics, intervention and the environment. Two essay exams and a long final paper. Very witty professor. Takes a lot of work, readings, pdfs and books but attainable A. Will always entertain. Must take professor!
One of the best professors at ASU. Love the activities--debates, simulations, and a lot of discusions! Essay inclass exams can be difficult but study groups help. I agree with the other posts. Very funny and engaging professor that motivates students to come to class.
I have taken other classes with Rilpley and they are all as follows: Tons of reading, discussion posts per week, a quiz, midterm essay, and final paper. There are also other assignments along the way. He does generally give an Extra Credit. In summary, if you keep up with the reading its a fairly easy class, just very time consuming.
Ripley is awesome. He's very animated in his lectures and always makes you laugh. He's a really good professor too he knows what he's talking about and is clear about what you need to study for testsquiz's which are not that often. Pretty easy class and he tries to make it more interesting. Would definitely take again.
Ripley is an engaging lecturer who knows what he's talking about. The assignments are varied enough to keep you on your feet, but all help for the test. Tests are all essay and very long, but the graders are fair and you just have to study harder than you would for an "easy A" class. You can tell he cares about his students.
If you have a chance to take Dr. Ripley, and you don't, you just missed out on life. He is hilarious. He has great lectures and is an expert in his field. Take him! A is attainable if you put some work in. Seriously, I cannot stress to you enough how great this guy is. I got an A, and it was probably one of the easier A's I have ever gotten.
As long as you go to class and pay attention you should do well
This class has a lot of readings, but he's an amazing teacher - hilarious too! Mr. Ripley makes each lecture worth coming to. Two essay exams, and study groups helps a lot! It is an easy A+ if you show up every day and do the discussion boards. He really cares about his students and he tries to remember everyone's name w around 150 people in class
Amazing. professor. He is obviously passionate and an expert in his field. He works hard to ensure all students grasp the material and does it in a very entertaining manner. Lectures are engaging and hilarious. Tries to be non-partisan, which I like. Definitely taking him again, do the work (approx 2-3 hours a week of reading) and you'll get an A.
This class was the first-year seminar for me. There was only 100 points on the syllabus and weekly discussion boards are only worth 1 pt! 3 papers, all worth under 20 points. He is pretty funny, a lot of sarcastic humor. He encourages you to dig deeper into your major and find out where you fit in. Always grades things fast. Always went to class
Ripley is by far, the best professor I have taken at ASU! He is hilarious, and makes material engaging and easy to understand. He is always open to questions and genuinely wants to help his students. Discussion posts every week and a 3-page and 12-page final paper. Put in the work, it's worth it!
Ripley is brilliant and definitely knows what he is talking about. He also does not grade very difficultly on exams or assignments. However, he is incredibly unorganized. His lectures are incredibly confusing and lack any structure whatsoever. Reading load is ridiculous. He is really friendly and approachable, though.
Initially the class sounds hard, two essay exams with no idea of what questions will be asked, a group debate, a 3 page paper and a 12 page paper plus tons of reading and weekly discussion boards. Honestly Dr. Ripley knows his stuff, is personable and hilarious. I will definitely take another class of his.
The class was small, and so participation was a must. In my opinion, Ripley is a great professor and honestly very hilarious. There was a lot of writing involved in the homework but that's essential for Poly Sci. No book was needed, we read articles online (provided by Ripley) and did discussion boards. A couple papers, nothing seriously difficult.
Class is on a 100-point scale, includes two exams, a weekly discussion board post, one group presentation, one final paper, and 3-4 BB quizzes. He assigns a lot of reading, but you only need to focus on what pertains to the discussion q's. Lectures are unorganized, but relevant nonetheless. If you put in at least some work, you can attain an A.
Ripley's POS160 class was the best decision my freshman year. It's 50 minutes to do whatever you want on your computer and kind of listen to this little man from Boston as he lectures on different tangents the whole class. Show up, regurgitate what he says on tests, take the online quizzes in groups, easy A+. Also, everyone gets 5 pts. extra credit
Definitely a must take professor. Very engaging lectures about a well-rounded amount of issues related to global politics. Essay exams can be difficult if you don't study. But as the other reviewers mentioned Ripley is very friendly and approachable. And very hilarious!! Highly recommended. Will take him for upper-level course.
Ripley was the best professor I've ever had. He knows the material and is extremely passionate about it. His class itself was not hard at all. I hardly ever went and still received an A+. I am definitely going to take him again and would totally recommend him as a teacher! oh and the review sessions before an exam, GO!
Best online class ever. If you want a professor that responds quickly to emails and puts a ton of effort to make an online class interesting, Ripley is it. I was impressed with the video lectures, though long, on many aspects of US foreign policy. There is a lot of reading in a short time span (warning), but I learned tons. Very recommended.
He is hilarious! He makes us laugh a lot of times. Clear about grading and gives interesting lectures, connecting ideologies to different real-world policies. The MC tests and quizzes were not that bad, though he added "All of the above" "None of the above" to almost all of them which confused a lot of us. But overall, would totes take again.
Ripley is hilarious and everyone that have had him knows that. His lectures are short but interesting if you are taking his large class. Only 2 exams and a few quizzes that are fairly easy, but have the annoying "all of the above" and/or "none of the above". Overall, a very inetersting prof from Boston that has a lot to offer to his students.
Ripley is the funniest professor ever!! Always cracking jokes at his and others' expense, and he made the lectures super interesting. Gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit, and if you do the BB quizzes as a group, it's super easy. Reading is essential, however I barely read the materials, but showed up to every single class and got an A+
Ripley is pretty confusing with his power points, they make sense to him but are not very clear. Also, he can be funny but sometimes crosses the line with his jokes. However, the class is fairly easy, just do the discussion boards and do well on the quizzes and you will have an A
Very eccentric proffesor! Links all the theories/information to real problems in the world while using humor to engage students. Has a knack to encourage participation. His style is a lot more fun and interesting than most. Definately will take him again. Study hard because the exams and quizzes can tank your grade! I learned a lot!
I took him for POS160(session A) online. It was fairly easy, just do the work really. Not a phenomenally interesting class to me but he is a cool guy and very helpful through emails. He has a good sense of humor which makes the lectures a bit easier to get through. I learned a lot! Would recommend, and yes, you need the books.
Great professor. The class is required and the grades are simple. You either get an A for trying or you fail for not. This class helped me learn more about what careers are possible with my degree.
Great professor. His lectures are recorded and in depth. He's pretty funny too. Very engaging and replies to emails and discussion boards quickly. This class has quite a bit of reading. I took a session A class so it was fast paced too. Six page paper only took an hour to write and another hour to do edits for citations with the help of a friend.
This class was not especially interesting but if you simply remember to complete the assignments each week, you should be able to obtain the grade you desire. Quiz once a week and are fairly difficult since they are open book. Doing the assignments is the most important as is usually the case.
Took both Foreign Policy and National Security online. His lectures are very in-depth, informative and entertaining. They are video taped, so not boring at all. He is an expert in the field so really wants his students to learn. Most helpful online profes I have had with email responses and efforts to make the online class interesting. Funny too!
If ur not sure what what u want to be when u grow up--this class is a must! Introduces a plethora of career choices as well as interviewing techniques and effective scholarship applications. Excellent GPA booster--just show up :)
By far my favorite online professor. Very dynamic even for an online course. As others have noted, Ripley's lectures are in-depth and video taped and are both informative and amusing. Very helpful with emails and responds rapidly. I learned so much as well!
Ripley is an amazing professor. He knows his stuff. I took this as an A session course. There are 2 discussion posts a week with a lot of reading and some documentaries. Not all reading is necessary but as long as you know the basics of the lecture and readings then the quizzes and exams are easy. He is very responsive and helpful!
Favorite Professor at ASU. Funny and engaging. Exams are straight forward and discussion boards are easy. Study for the quizzes!
Ripley is a little eccentric but it makes the classes more interesting. He uses real life examples to explain research methods, I really enjoyed/ learned a lot from this class. Some of the quizzes are tough but he gives extra credit and helps you prepare for the tests which are worth more. Attendance is mandatory for passing
I absolutely loved Dr. Ripley's class!! He really cares about his students and provides everything you need to be successful. His classes are very writing intensive so be prepared for lots of writing, but he always makes it super interesting. Definitely recommend taking his classes! If you put in the effort you'll do great!
This class was quite easy and i loved the professor. There are discussion boards once every week, one 3 page paper, and one 12 page paper due at the end of the semester. There is a midterm and a final exam, both essay exams. Not too much work in general, as long as you get everything done and put in some effort you should be able to get an A.
So far, the best professor I've had during my Poli Sci BA map. He makes class intersting, and his assignments are the perfect level of difficulty. You can get an easy A if you take notes during his lectures and study key words before tests. He's also very active on feedback and emails. I would take a course by Ripley every semester if I could.
He has been the best professor I have ever had. He is always determined to help students succeed.
Me. Ripley is one of the best professor I've ever taken. He's a little too eccentric, but he knows materials very well. Makes you study hard, but it also makes you double-double smarter. He also makes a lot of jokes in the class and students all have fun with those.
Taking Ripley for my first POS class ever was the best decision. He makes class interesting and although he does not structure his class in the best manner its still interesting. He gives you a keyword list that you can study usually two weeks before the exam. Only a midterm and final that are both essay exams, pretty easy if you review vocab list.
Because this was an online, Ripley gave recorded lectures each week and I think he made it pretty entertaining. His lectures aren't dry and the readings he gives hold relevancy. Everything he assigns is relevant, not just busy work. He was also very diligent about e-mailing course updates and keeping everyone up to date.
I had Dr. Ripley for POS 160 and he is one of the best professors i've had to date. Absolutely take one of his classes if you get the chance.
I've had professor Ripley for POS 361, POS 160, and soon i'll be taking SGS 394 with him. He's definitely the best professor I've ever had. He truly cares about the students and will help you through anything. He's also very intelligent and you learn a lot and his lectures really help with learning the material.
As a political science major this class was extremely helpful to help guide my career path. Professor Ripley has a lot of personal experience in this field and is very helpful. Discussion boards once a week, resume, final interview, and 2 one page papers. Do the work and you'll get an A+. Definitely would take a class with Ripley again.
A remarkable professor overall. Very helpful when you're not understanding the material. Not to mention, he's pretty funny. His persona is like Danny Devito+Gilbert Gottfried. As long as you do the discussion questions, and have a basic understanding of the material you'll do fine. 2-3 quizzes, 2 tests, 1 final paper.
He's a really funny and nice professor, but kinda odd. The lectures weren't really worthwhile because they were always kinda incoherent. I ended up heavily relying on just the book, which worked just fine. Also, his voice sounds exactly like Gilbert Gottfried. Honestly, I wouldn't take classes with him unless it is absolutely necessary.
I agree with the rest. He is remarkable. Ripley can go off on tangents, but they are very useful. He also applies everything to the real world and job opportunities and never misses an email. Hilariously funny so you never fall asleep. I have taken two courses with him and definitely will again before graduation. And love the roll calls!
Professor is very interesting to say the least. He often goes on many tangents. I often had to teach myself the material. Tests are pretty straight forward. Attendance is not mandatory but is encouraged. Pay attention to the films they are a large lump some of the test pay attention to even the smallest details. Their is a final paper .
Took two summer online courses and they were great. Riply videotapes all his lectures which makes the course interesting and entertaining. He also responds quickly to emails and I enjoyed the virtual debates. Quizzes can be tricky so study. And there is a lot of work in a short time frame. Take only if you want to work, but well worth it.
Took summer format Discussion board - two a week consisting of answering questions regarding lecture, articles, videos, and textbook. Lectures are 15 - 30 min long, 2 or 3 a week. Quiz each week, open book. One three page paper, one 11 page paper (as the final), and midterm was essay questions. Easy grader. Answers emails fast. Very helpful
Charles is phenomenal. He is extremely interesting and funny so if you go into his lectures with an open mind you will always be amused. His teaching style is unconventional, yet all of his lectures were always intellectually stimulating. Tests were straightforward and study guides really helped. Assignments are graded on participation and are easy
The best professor I have seen in ASU. His accent is awesome and he even makes fun of it. Professor Ripley truly cares about his students and how much they pay we pay for school.
By far the best professor I have ever had in Arizona State. Doctor Ripley is a fantastic professor and truly cares about what he is doing and about his students.
I love Ripley. I have had him several times and honestly I wish I could of had him more. He is incredibly smart and is always willing to explain concepts to you. His lectures are hilarious and useful. He is a fair grader and always gives feedback. I suggest anyone to take Ripley if you can. He is seriously one of the best teachers at ASU.
I LOVED THIS CLASS! He was one of the best professors I've had, he wants his students to succeed. Just show up to his class and you'll not regret it. Make sure to turn in all assignments to get a good grade...
Hes hilarious and made me actually care about material that I wouldnt have cared much about before. Extremely helpful! Im taking another class of his next semester.
HE SOUNDS EXACTLY LIKE GILBERT GODFRIED. You will never fall asleep in his class, because his accent and jokes are so great. Do the discussions online and you will easily get 100 percent in the class. He doesn't really read the final paper and just gives everyone a 100. Has an odd obsession with telling people to become maritime lawyers.
Professor Ripley is amazing! Super hilarious, and was the easiest teacher I have ever had. He does like you to show up to class, takes attendance. Highly recommended!
Ripley is my favorite professor at ASU. Hilarious and extremely knowledgeable with first hand experience in the issues he teaches about. The class was on the European Union and i learned a ton without being worked too hard. Final paper was a big one but the weekly Model EU and debates were super fun. Taking him again next semester. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Professor Ripley is the best! He explains the theory in such an enthusiastic way that is not hard to follow and solidifies it by having you apply the different ones to a movie. The weekly discussion boards are very easy as detail and precision are not necessary. If you show up to class and listen, you will get an A/A+ easily guaranteed.
Professor Ripley is great, funny, engaging and you can tell he really cares about the subject. There is a TON of reading, but the material is interesting and he's great about explaining things if you don't understand. There are a couple of papers and an online debate, but if you follow the rubric and answer all of the questions, you'll do fine.
Professor Ripley is an incredibly gifted lecturer, so it should come as no surprise that he is awarded as such. The course was homework-intensive, but he communicates the material in a manner that makes it easy to understand. His enthusiasm is contagious. Highly highly recommended.
Professor Ripley was outstanding. His lectures were funny, but very insightful. There are three books in this course, but I felt that each one was needed in order to properly understand the fundamentals. Highly, Highly recommend!
Professor Ripley is the best professor I've had at ASU! His lectures are engaging passionate, funny, and easy to follow along. His online class is straight forward and described in the syllabus. There is a lot of reading for the class, but his lectures go over what he finds important to understand. Highly recommend him as your professor!
You do need a book for the class, and you do actually need to do the reading and watch the lectures/videos. The discussion board is made up of questions about them. However, I found him to be very interesting, and engaging. I wish I wasn't graduating this year, because I would take him again. He's also very easy to work with, and understanding.
Professor Ripley has an enthusiastic teaching style. He is very involved in the course, and responds to emails within 24hrs. He is motivating and keeps his lectures very interesting. I highly recommend him and wish I could have taken a class from him at the actual campus.
Professor Ripley is one of the best professors I've had at ASU. He makes the class very interesting and is always willing to help you. I learned a ton and really enjoyed the books as well, which is hard with some textbooks. Overall, I highly recommend taking Professor Ripley's classes.
Ripley is easily the best professor I've had at ASU. His lectures are hilarious and he makes everything easy to understand, and if you don't he will take the time to explain it. He takes attendance at the beginning of every class. The quizzes/tests are based off what is discussed during the lectures, so attendance is mandatory for an easy A.
What can I say, the man is straight up hilarious. Have taken him for multiple POS courses and never disappoints. He genuinely wants you to succeed in college, and makes it very manageable to do so. Coming to his class feels like hanging out with a good friend, even if you have never taken him before. More profs in his dept. should learn from him!!!
Very structured class. Easy to follow, and he has some really funny lectures. Overall would recommend the class. Didn't use the text book at all this semester. Everything was from the lectures online and the tests and quizzes were derived directly from them.
There was a lot of reading for this class, but it was mainly for the discussion posts, and I didn't really ever read all I was supposed to but I still did fine in the class. He is so funny and really knows what he is talking about, which made the class very enjoyable. There are a number of quizzes but they are open note so it isn't that hard.
2nd time taking Ripley, still my favorite professor. Taking him again next semester. You learn a ton but not too difficult. Really wants each student to do well and is engaging both in and out of class. Lectures keep you interested, and the class debates are always fun and interesting. If you have't taken a class with Ripley, you're missing out
Professor Ripley was great! His lectures were always entertaining and informational, and he himself is a really cool guy. Quizzes are easy, discussions can get a bit long but are simple enough. The midterm and final cover basic, broad concepts, and the final is not cumulative. The worst part for me was the final paper but its really not that bad.
I have taken 3 classes with Dr. Ripley and I wish I could take more. He is a really solid professor, really knows and cares about the material and is really funny. You have to read to pass the exams but the book is interesting.
The best professor Ive had at ASU. I have taken 4 of his classes and they all have the same structure. Discussion boards, few quizzes, midterm/final, debate, final paper. Grades easy if you give a good effort. Come to class and you will have all of the information you need. Hilarious guy makes the lectures great. Don't graduate without taking him!
Charles is probably one of the best lecturers I've had thus far. I enjoyed going to his classes. His class is laid out in a VERY organized manner. It is point based and each point is very important. I went from failing to passing with a B. This is due to the fact that 40-50 pts aren't attainable until after the paper and final is submitted.
Class is point based, so you "gotta fight for every point," but he offered about 110 points. One 12 page paper due at the end of the semester which was easy because you just have to reach the mark and not worry too much on quality. Midterm is easy if you go to class, and he even made the final online, so make some good friends !
Lectures did not match what we were reading about. Seemed more interested in talking about his personal experiences & interests than what the class was actually about. I enjoy hearing about professors passions, but it was so heavily focused on his own interests I didnt come out of the class with any new knowledge. Made me sad, I wanted to learn
Mr. Ripley was a great professor and the class on National Security was amazing. He had made the class based around the lectures and used writing assignments to make sure you learned the material. I would definitely take his class again, there was so much to learn!
Dr. Ripley is by far the best professor at ASU. He is passionate about what he teaches and his experience in politics makes his lectures very interesting. His class is based on a point system so every point counts, however he offers lots of extra credit opportunities. I would absolutely take another one of his classes!
Prof Ripley was great. I took this as a Session A summer course. I learned alot from his lectures and it was refreshing to hear a professor tell it like it is in regard to US foreign policy. As long as you do the work, you will get an A.
Signed up for this class because I thought it'd be a GPA booster, but it was not. To be clear, the work was fairly easy and the class was well organized. Nothing wrong with the content or his lectures. The problem was that the quizzes were all phrased horribly. Often several answers felt like they could be right so I lost points for stupid stuff.
Amazing online course--well organized and hilarious lectures. I really enjoyed his videos from abroad. He emails back quicker than most I have had. Quizzes can be tricky but just study and you will be fine.
Professor Ripley is AWESOME. Best prof. I've had at ASU so far. This is my third SGS class and by far my favorite and most informative. He knows what he's talking about and has first hand experience, so it's easier to pay attention and learn from him than other SGS professors I've taken.
Professor Ripley was the most hilarious professor I've taken. He also really knew a lot about the content. As long as you pay attention and do the homework passing is extremely easy. Fun class for sure.
Professor Ripley is one of the funniest professors i have ever had, his lectures were always fun to watch. I appreciate how committed he is to his job, he seems to enjoy teaching this class! Assignment due dates are frequently moved so make sure to check canvas several times a day just in case! Overall, wonderful guy
As everyone else has said, Ripley is hilarious and is really passionate about what he teaches. Fantastic professor!
Easily one of the best professors in the School of Politics and Global Studies. He's a hilarious professor who gives great, informative lectures and makes the class a joy to be a part of. Is a tough grader, and only offers six points of extra credit, no questions asked. Still, he's an outstanding professor and everyone should take his class!
Ripley is the best professor Ive had! Each lecture will make you open your eyes and even laugh at how hilarious his commentary is! Boston home boy all the way! Great guy and if you are reading this you should definitely take any of his courses! Interesting dude to say the least!
Textbook assignment due every week, all quizzes and tests are online, 1 essay due at the end. Easy A if you read the textbook. Ripley is hilarious and makes lectures fun. Strongly recommend.
He is quite laid back and jokes around a lot in class. He one wish it that students try to participate in class so he isn't just lecturing the entire class. In this course, we worked on resume presentations, mock interviews, and identifying future goals. If you show up and do the work then you're guaranteed an "A". He gives out extra credit often.
Take Prof. Ripley. All of the exams and quizzes were online, and the homework assignments are a complete joke even if you do not read the textbook. If you want an easy A, this is the class for you.
Great teacher that genuinely made me feel like I was learning valuable international relations theory. My favorite course that I took first semester as ASU.
Professor Ripley is a great professor. He is very smart, his lectures are funny, and he is very clear about what he expects from students. He makes a boring subject interesting with the material he presents. There are quite a few assignments, but nothing out of the ordinary.
Professor Ripley is one of the best professor I have had at ASU. I liked his class so much that I am getting a minor in Political Science. Would recommend any class that is taught by him. He is very informative and makes you want to learn.
Ripley does not take attendance, but don't let that fool you into thinking it isn't mandatory. He will take questions from lectures and use them in quizzes. Ripley makes the lectures fun. There is a debate discussion in front of the class on related topics. Textbook necessary as discussion boards require them.
Ripley is very straight forward with what he expects. Discussion boards are easy and only two exams, midterm and final. The documentaries you watch make up the exam content. For the 10 page final paper, I wrote it in 3 days and put little effort in and got a 100%. It's not hard to get an A as long as you just do the work.
I had Dr. Ripley for a discovery seminar, he is hilarious and made lecture enjoyable. Since it was a small class, it was very discussion based and he made an effort to get to know us all. He's a caring guy and very straight forward on what he expects.
Professor Ripley is insightful, engaging, and has the students' best interests in mind. If his classes are of any interest to you, I can't think of any reason to not recommend him enough.
This is probably the political science class where I learned the most. There is a lot of work, but it is not that tedious if you watch the lectures on 2x and control F for the online text. If you do the work, you get a good grade. Professor Ripley's lectures are actually interesting to listen to. But beware of the 10 pg paper at the end.
A lot of people on here are saying this class is great and so easy to pass. Don't get me wrong, the professor is knowledgeable, but he assigns SO MUCH WORK. Its the last week of class and there are still 4 homework assignments of 10 lengthy questions due, an ELEVEN page paper which was just introduced yesterday, a midterm and a final exam. Beware!
Ripley's class is fun and more or less a breeze. If you read the homework and take it seriously you should pass with an A. His lectures are very informative and he makes cool YouTube videos as part of the curriculum. The class is also not very reliant on the text book as I did well with a dated edition I got on Ebay for $4.
TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN. Really caring and loving prof. Class was just covering a 5-10 question discussion board on the "book" or a lecture video. The book is given to you as a pdf on canvas but is like a dollar on Amazon. Tests are really easy if you pay attention, questions cant be googled.
He is passionate about what he teaches, but his lectures go off on so many tangents. He is a funny guy though and lets other students give their input on certain topics. As for the work, the discussion posts are sometimes long. The quizzes aren't too hard. For some reason, our midterm was based entirely on a movie? Kind of weird. Good class though.
If you are lucky enough to get Ripley for Political Statistics you have won the Political Science Major Lottery. By far the easiest 401 professor in the world and teaches great material. Take his classes early on as a freshman or sophomore as they all help you for career/grad school prep. ALSO A GREAT AMERICAN!
Really cool guy! Interesting lecturer and actually cares about his students. I just signed up for my second class of his for next semester.
Taking this class during covid times (online) was honestly unbearable. The coursework is not hard by any means, but for a 100 level class there is lots of homework. Lectures were terrible, he could not stay on topic so we would waste pretty much the whole class going on tangent after tangent.
I did not like his lectures, and found outside research more helpful, but he gives copious amounts of extra credit and does not use lockdown browser
He is what you want in a professor he keeps everything interesting and his assignments are straight and to the point.
For a 100 level course, there were a ton of assignments. However, he is an easy grader so you do not need to stress too much when doing them. Pay attention to his announcements because he will put due-dates that are not the same as the syllabus and expect your assignment by that due-date. Lots of extra credit though so it is super manageable.
Professor Ripley is a hilarious man. Yes, it is true that he goes on a lot of tangents, but the homework keeps you on track content wise. The homework are questions about the weekly readings, and are a LOT better than a mere "read this chapter" type deal. He is very knowledgeable and made me consider changing my major to polisci. Lots of EC. "BUT!"
I dropped Dr. Ripley's class because it was so confusing. The material was standard, but trying to sort out assignments, what was due when, when tests were, and what was happening ever was impossible. The lectures were interesting, and he was very engaging, but the class if set up so terribly. Don't take this class until in-person classes resume.
This course was a fine course, but the problems come when he does not grade and do not accept any late assignment, so you should be aware of that and you may get an A+.
Took two online classes in the summer. Really caring professor like others said. Love the youtube lectures from other countries. Not the standard boring online ones. Good amount of work, but you learn tons about foreign policy and national security and gives extra credit quizzes to reach an A.
Prof Ripley is very light-hearted, but strict on extra credit points and curving grades. There's a weekly discussion board that goes along with the textbook and readings and or videos he provides. Lecture gets off-task and confusing very quickly, poor class management. Other than that this class is very easy.
Surprisingly cool stats class. Lots of extra credit yes A+ and you actually learn cool things. If you have to take the drudgery of statistics I would take Ripley. The online texts are free and he is a funny guy too as previous posts said.
Took Ripley for most of my online classes. He offered us the opportunity to do some Zoom preparations for quizzes, which he posted. Nice to meet and get to know the professor in the online courses. Very helpful and hilariously funny as well! Must take professor! Do not graduate without taking him.
I absolutely adored Professor Ripley. He put a large amount of effort into his lectures and it showed. He has a vast storehouse of knowledge and experience that he shares with the class readily. POS160 was an easy yet enlightening class with a short (6 page) paper due at the end. The exams are easy and he even did Zoom reviews for both.
If you don't give Ripley a 5/5, then what're you doing? Probably the best professor I've has so far. I took him back in fall and even for online classes it was a breeze. Do the homework, do the fun assignments, and study for the quizzes and tests and you get an A+. He's a really passionate and well informed professor who always answers questions.
Professor Ripley is honestly my favorite professor thus far. His lectures are super entertaining. I am an online student, whenever I listen to lecturers, even my boyfriend is listening. He is vibrant & enthusiastic. If you get a chance to take his class I would hop right on board. He really bases grades on participation. 10/10 would recommend!
I've taken 5 classes with Ripley. FIVE. That's about 33% of my total POS classes with him. He's passionate about his research, hilarious, and makes learning a blast. I looked forward to attending each and every one of his lectures. Easily the professor I'll miss the most. You won't regret taking any of his classes!
This is easily my favorite professor I have had at ASU. If you are a political science or global studies major, take as many classes with Dr. Ripley as possible you will not regret it. My only real gripe is that he has a paper due at the end of each of his classes which are tedious, but he is still a top tier professor.
He is one of the most entertaining teachers I have ever had. He really takes the time to make the course material understandable and easy. TAKE HIM FOR POS 401! I dreaded this class and he made it so easy and I enjoyed attending class. Every day is new, free entertainment. Plus, he accommodates the class based on what we find challenging.
Mostly discussion boards, only like 3 quizzes. Had a Mid term and final that count for the most points. Only reason he isn't 5/5 is that he has a final exam and a 10 page final essay. Good thing is he doesn't really grade the essay, you'll get full points just for hitting the page count.
Professor Ripley is awesome. I took him last semester. Notice how every rating below a 5 is from people who did work late or didn't care enough to learn, that's all you need to know when valuing my 5/5 rating over someone else's rating.
To have Dr. Ripley is a real privilege that you should not take lightly. He is the best POS professor I have ever had, especially for topics regarding international politics and law. I've taken 3 courses with him thus far, and the man bestows concepts that actually stick with me once the course is over. His courses are reasonably challenging too!
Hey dudes. POS 401 isnt super easy, but not many upper division Political Science credits are. Ripely is super awesome though. Make sure to try to talk at least once per class because he does give a lot of participation points. I got a letter grade higher than I thought I would because I participated well.
Such an interesting character! He loves different opinions and perspectives, which I love, because I'm conservative and don't always get open-minded professors. I'm taking him again next semester.
Class is easy as long as you keep up with the readings and do the discussion board/quizzes. Course runs on the "point" system, every assignment you do is worth a certain amount of points, and those points add up, so every assignment is equally significant. Discussion boards graded on participation and quizzes are not too hard. EC available and easy
Elements of what comes from above when were talking political power was covered in this class. I recieved a full score in here. When i started the semester i focused on nothing but this class for 2 weeks. Never left my uniform ounce. Felt ahead in the hell pack for sure.
Probably my favorite thing about Professor Ripley is he teaches without a Euro-centric perspective, which contrasts so much with all the other classes I've taken that center around American and European politics. He does make you think, but also wants you to form your own opinions on things. Do the extra credit, as every point counts in his class!
Clearly very passionate, and incredibly intelligent within the scope of his profession. He relies very heavily on lectures, and you absolutely NEED to watch the lectures to be able to respond to DBs and do well on tests. But his lectures are long, rambling, and off topic at times. They're disorganized, you have to watch them 2-3x to retain info.
Take Mr. Ripley's classes! he's awesome and easily my favorite professor out of my whole college career !!
Professor Ripley is an incredible professor! He really knows what he's talking about and his lectures are usually pretty interesting. The lectures can be a little difficult to follow if you aren't well versed on international policy and some history (like me lol), but you just need to pay attention and you'll be fine :)
Ripley is clearly very passionate about the topics that he speaks about. However, his lectures ramble on and on, and there is not much point to them. I did enjoy the debates that he has set up for this class, but the class was not particularly fulfilling. It is a very easy A though, and the class gets easier as the semester goes on.
I wish there were more tags I could put for Dr. Ripley! I loved this class so much, and the lectures, materials, and all the things within the class were so fun to read and easy to navigate. As long as you pay attention and complete your work, you're in the clear!!
Definitely take this professor if you need to boost your GPA. I have taken him three times now and have gotten As in all of his classes. All of his classes have the similar style, I took his professional development class the semester of fall 2021. Very easy
Professor Ripley is very funny and generally a good teacher. His lectures, though, are very unorganized, and he rambles on, so it can be hard to keep up. Also, there's a final essay and a final quiz due the same week. I also found his grading scale to be a bit odd.
Charles Ripley is a hilarious and entertaining lecturer. His grading system is strict, however, so you need to attend class in order to do well on the 100 point scale - DO NOT SKIP ANY ASSIGNMENTS! My only complaint is that he's unwilling to make accomodations. I missed a quiz due to being hospitalized, and he was unwilling to allow me an extension
If I am being completely honest I did not enjoy this class. The two things that will help my grade were discussion board questions and the extra credit. I went from an E to an A in two weeks. I failed most of his small quizzes. He does not write his quizzes well and makes them really confusing. He makes his lectures really boring. Very friendly guy
This class is very interesting and Professor Ripley makes it even better. His lectures are hilarious and informative. The only thing with this class is that you do need to show up. He goes over pretty much every exam in class in depth, so if you do not get an A in this class that is on you.
It's an easy class and he a nice, funny guy. A certain type of student takes a course like this and they're annoying, but the class itself is fine. Mostly Canvas discussions, plus a debate, essay, and two exams. Not bad if you browse the (free) textbooks or take notes in class.
I like the grading system of this class. The assignments are just reading books and answering questions on the discussion board. You'll get 1 point as long as you post things, and every point adds up to 100. It did motivate me to read. The lectures are great and the contents are pretty easy. Just get ready for the final paper and weekly reading.
Professor Ripley is very experienced in what he teaches. I think the class was interesting and he allows for you to see global politics in different perspectives. Great sense of humor. Attendance is "required" but the exams are based on the lectures. My only problem is that he was a bit unorganized at times.
More than the usual amount of reading and writing assignments, but very interesting stuff made very accessible by Professor Ripley. Much of the material felt both redundant and irrelevant, but he was so personable during his live lectures that I probably could have done well in the class without either of the textbooks. This teacher is a keeper.
Dr. Ripley was hilarious! You dont really know where he leaned politically bc he took a blow to everyone lol. You have to do coding for this class but as long as you show up to class, he goes over what should expected on quizzes and tests. The only other thing graded were DBs which were only one point. But if you keep up, youll pass for sure!
Ripley's lectures are very interesting and he has a nuanced perspective on global politics because of his time teaching in South America. The homework is easy, just watch videos he's put together, answer questions in a discussion board, and prepare a few points for a debate. The hardest part was writing a paper on a global politics topic of choice.
Dr. Ripley was one of the best professors I've ever taken. He is so funny but so educated on the topic of politics. There are weekly quizzes but they are stupid easy and you can use your notes and take them with other classmates. While he doesn't care about attendance, if you want an easy A just come to class.
Dr. Ripley is a pretty funny guy and his class is pretty much straight lectures. Homework is essentially one discussion board a week based off a couple readings (but not even every week). There are quizzes and tests but TON of extra credit (up to like 10%), so its super easy to get an A.
Took an entire summer of classes with Ripley and really enjoyed the US foreign policy and national security courses. Surprisingly, the lectures were very funny and insightful. I was expecting the usual summer class of reading and little interaction. He Zoomed with us to prepare for exams. Really fun time to be honest. I loved the debates the most.
If you take any professor in the political science department at ASU, take Dr. Ripley. Hes funny and has incredible real-world experience to talk about. He wants you to succeed in class and gives you every opportunity to do so. I had him online and hes the best online professor Ive had at ASU. Truly a gem.
Great instructor. Dr. Charles Ripley was very kind and thoughtful in your feedback. You do need to read the book and watch the lectures. The book is very very boring but the lectures are not. So, it evens out. I would take this class again. I learned alot.
Great professor who cares about students learning the subject.
The professor gives great advice & feedback on resumes, cover letters, interviews, and job prospects related to poli sci. Many assignments you've probably already done if you've ever had a job before (i.e. resumes). The professor is entertaining, funny, and gives personal insight, as shocking as it may be at times
Prof Ripley is an amazing professor. What made me absolutely hate the class were the due dates. I absolutely rely on the canvas schedule to do HW, but he makes things due at 8 or 9am so I ended the year with a lot of missing work. If youre going to take him and use the schedule, change the time on your computer to compensate. I would have had an A
Best Professor I've ever had, he's funny, memorable, passionate, & gives great lessons. His quizzes are semi-tough but DON'T LET THAT STOP YOU, he's a professor you won't forget & won't regret.
Lecture is not clear, he skips around a lot. Quizzes on random stuff from class and are very frustrating. Final paper will supposedly help grades out, we'll see. No class recordings. No extra credit. I work hard but this class is full of trick questions. Be ready to scour your notes. That being said, he is a good person to know for research.
Ripley is great and makes the lectures so fun to listen to. He doesn't care if you use notes on exams, so as long as you go to the lectures you will do really good. The slides are also posted on canvas but most of the exam questions are things we talked about in class. There are also discussion boards/mini quizzes every week and they're super easy.
Super funny and will keep class interesting! Some quizzes can be confusing, but as long as you are present in class you will understand the topics and have a laugh
Dr. Ripley is my favorite Professor by far. He's fun. I've taken 3 of his courses. His life experience brings his teaching alive. He's funny and interesting and he cares about student opinions too! His online courses seem a bit confusing but once you get the hang of his system it's easy.
Ripley really is an incredible professor. This class was pretty easy, and the only homework is a discussion board a week and one essay that's due at the end of the sem. Ripley is also really approachable and has good answers to questions after class. You have to do 2 debates in this class, but he's really understanding if you're nervous, etc.
I found his quizzes/tests occasionally difficult because I felt that he sometimes contradicted himself in the lectures. He is also extremely tangential, which can make his lectures hard to follow. He can be funny at times, but I wouldn't call him politically correct (if shock-value humor bothers you, I wouldn't recommend him).
Changed grading scale frequently, lectures were hard to follow. A good prof if you are laid back about that sort of thing bc he's fun, but grading structure was constantly changing, core material was not differentiated from stuff we didn't need to know. To be fair he grades easy on papers and the final was easy
He is not very organized, quizzes are hard, but final paper and final exam are easy if you paid attention and went to class. textbook is cheap if you get it used.
Homework due at random times, so be sure to nail down that schedule or else you'lll miss assignments. DBs due at like 1:30pm, and quizzes due at 8am. Constantly changed the grade book. In class he moves so quickly it's very hard to keep up, no recorded lectures, and he does not zoom in on R so if you sit further than the 3rd row then good luck.
Professor Ripley is really great. He makes lecture fun and interesting with personal anecdotes and current events. Although, attendance is not required showing up makes class really easy. There is also a lot of extra credit. Once you get past the Boston accent, he really is a fantastic professor
Even though I'm strictly online, Dr. Ripley's courses have kept me engaged and interested for not just two but three classes. His classes and lectures blend well not only with the material but his own life experiences. He keeps us interested in what's going on both in the classroom and the world as a whole. I cannot recommend him enough!
Ripley cannot stay on a single subject for longer than 10 seconds. He rambles on about 3 topics simultaneously. Lectures are torture. The final exam, final essay (8 pages long), and debate video are worth the most points by far. Don't worry about completing every discussion post. They're half the work in the class but only make up ~10% of the grade
Took Ripley for both 361 and 364. Although I am online only, I really enjoyed the intimate Zoom meetings and ontheground videos. Really passionate and fun. Highly recommended. Replies to emails quickly too and there was no text to buy:)
Easily the best professor I have had at ASU. I have learned way more in this class than I ever have since being an online student. The material he teaches in clear and easy to understand. Watch the lectures, take notes, & you will do great in this class. Lectures are actually interesting, & readings are easy to follow.
This was the easiest course I've taken here. Attendance wasn't mandatory, the paper was graded so easily, the debate wasn't even really that difficult it was just speaking for one minute in front of the class, and he always made funny jokes and had very very good takes on current international events. Great guy to learn from, also great easy A.
Ripley is great! Everything in his classes are very clear and easy to understand. He is very funny and engaging so the lectures are not bland. I have taken as many classes as I can with Ripley because he has a clear outline of the class and its easy to actually learn. Thanks for all the fun classes professor!
Ripley is an amazing professor, have taken him several times and will take him again.
I have had Professor Ripleys class before and enjoyed it. Decided to take him again for POS 364 and genuinely love his class setup and grading criteria. Do the lectures (not too long), the reading material and the discussions-you will be fine.
Dr. Ripley was really funny in class and made his lectures entertaining. With it being such a big class, he actually did a great job at answering any questions. There is one in-class debate activity and the tests/quizzes asked specific questions about what we talked about in class, so though attendance isn't mandatory, it's important to go.
Dr. Ripley's classes are pretty chaotic, but he knows his stuff. If you pay attention, you can get a good grade. Even if you don't show up, he posts his lectures on YouTube, which are a great reference for quizzes (which are basically open-note). He's very conscious about making all resources free for students.
Best prof ever, had if for pos 401, 364, and 301. Very funny and cares about your grades.
Ripley is one of the best at ASU. This class was supper easy, 2 discussion boards and a quiz a week. The midterm and final are supper easy, and besides that you only have to write one other paper and debate. His lectures are pretty funny and entertaining as well. Highly recommend
He's great. His lectures are engaging and interesting as he is an interesting person with a lot of knowledge.
I've taken professor Ripley multiple times and he is always amazing. His course work is very straightforward. Put in some effort and you will get an A.
He is extremely sexy!!! Beware!
I've also taken POS 364 online with Professor Ripley and he's one of the most amazing professors I've had during my time at ASU. I appreciate the way he leverages youtube lectures, finds that he's very organized, and breaks up the depth of the lecture with humor and life lessons that help. Thank you professor Ripley for being amazing!
Very good class, a lot of extra credit. Only one six-page paper, Just a bit of effort and it is a free A+
Great guy, called all the other ASU professors wimps and cucks. I love this guy.
One of the best professors at asu took him for two classes this past semester and loved every aspect. Well worth my asu dollars.
If you can handle a little sarcasm, get ready to hear from one of the most knowledgeable and passionate people around. I am well out of undergrad but I owe my job to this man. Talking about world history and politics can get controversial but after knowing this professor for 4 years, I still can't pin-point is political affiliation.
Ripley is a pretty entertaining professor who clearly cares about his students. I'm currently taking him again for pos 301. The one thing to keep in mind is the frequency of his due dates, for both classes I'm in he has two discussion boards due a week, with replies mandatory as well. They aren't super onerous but they're easy to miss.
Had Prof. Ripley for Spring semester 2022 and can only give high appraisal! Class was engaging, tests and exams were of reasonable difficulty. IF you do the quizzes and go to class then you can easily get an A or A+. Great guy and helped make my time at ASU all the more fun (ps bumped into him Vine before it got closed down so you know he's based)
I loved Professor Ripley! Hes funny and keeps you engages very well. I like the tangets and group conversations that we would get into. His grading system is very clear and easy to understand. Not a hard class if you attend the lectures and take notes!
Empirical Political Inquiry could be a nightmare. Dr. Charles makes it fun. His classes are fairly easy if you watch the lectures and participate in the Discussion Boards. he has a great sense of humor, and if a student runs into trouble, he is just an email away...
My boy Charles will get you right for any politics class. Online lectures were very entertaining and enjoyable. I really appreciated the on-the-ground work he has done with each topic. Grade based on total points and they add up to over 100%, I ended with a 106%. Exams are very straight forward if you watch the lectures. Can't recommend enough.
The most confusing teaching style I have ever encountered. This guy confuses terms and just words in general throughout the course. The tests and quizzes are worded so strangely that I have to guess on half the questions because I don't know what he means. The lectures are informative sometimes but always confusing. He mixes up disparate definition
Ripley is the BEST professor I have ever had. I am a transfer student and a senior so I have had a fair share of professors and he tops them all. He is not only a walking encyclopedia, but he also pairs it with humor and wit that makes lectures interesting and easy to follow. He makes it easy for a student to do well and is overall, the best prof.
Professor Ripley is just amazing. His lectures are so interesting and he presents the information in a concise and clear way. Also he is just hilarious. His class was hard, but I felt like I learned so much. It also seems like Ripley cared so much about his students and wants us to be successful. I had an issue and he was so helpful. Great Prof!!
Professor Ripley is EXTREMELY sexy, I mean sexist, I mean...he's a great professor. Jokes aside, his lectures were fun and funny. His research in Latin America make him feel extremely credible and his lecture style made this class easy. Start your final paper and two-minute presentation early, don't stress about it. Do the work and you'll get an A
Can turn any topic into something interesting. One of the best professors if not the best I have had at ASU
I'm glad I paid ASU to listen to a middle-aged man rant. Jokes aside, Dr. Ripley is a phenomenal professor! Do yourself a favor and take his classes. Not only will you learn a lot, but his lectures are hilarious. The key to success in his class is simply putting in consistent effort. Ask questions, he's very responsive. Lots of extra points.
Prof. Ripley is a king and is my favorite professor ever. Easy assignments and funniest guy ever. I am his biggest supporter. I think he should run for US President.
The class is not hard, but he posts discussion boards pretty last minute and they are not outlined on a syllabus. There are not any dates for when anything is due on the syllabus so I feel like I am scrambling often. He also says some pretty out-of-pocket stuff in his lectures...He grades based off a point system, so it is not hard to get an A
Dr. Ripley is the greatest professor I have ever had here at ASU. He is extremely passionate about what he teaches, and he cares about the success of his students. He is also downright hilarious and says the most out-of-pocket things, lol! His lectures are always very entertaining, and the assignments are very interesting.
Dr. Ripley is one of the funniest people I have ever met, and he is a very knowledgeable lecturer. He gives several extra credit opportunities, and he makes his classes really enjoyable. As others have mentioned, the man is also a walking encyclopedia. I would heavily recommend to anybody to go out of their way to take a class with Ripley.
This guy makes the arm and leg you pay for tuition almost worth it!
He was the best professor ever! At first I did not know if I would enjoy the class and was conflicted on how I felt about him but he grows on you and has so much knowledge. I love that he always takes both sides of the arguments we have but beware, some comments may come across as out of pocket lol.
He is a really great professor. makes going to class worth it.
He is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is eccentric in a good way his lectures are energetic and he is very funny. If you plan to take this class or any political science and he is teaching it then take it. He also has very clear grading criteria and is generous with the amount of extra credit he gives out.
Professor Ripley was one of my favorite professors at ASU, I also took POS 364 with him. Overall, he's a fair grader, assigns a reasonable work load and is generous with extra credit opportunities. The lectures are entertaining and just reinforces the main points of the readings.
The professor is a bit of a wild card, in that when he talks you don't really know what he will say next. It kept the class interesting, even when he went off-topic.
While this class was "easy", there were some parts of it that were quite hard to follow. I'd suggest referring to the syllabus instead of trying to find answers within the modules. His Youtube lectures required next level concentration to actually understand. As someone with ADHD, there are many easier classes to comprehend.
Professor Ripley is a great professor with a unique grading scale instead of weighted grades. He also includes added extra points that come free, without any effort/work, to your grade which compensates for any missing work you may miss throughout his class. Would recommend taking Professor Ripley.
Dr. Ripley is the best professor I have ever had. I am almost done with his session A course and am sad because I have learned so much. His lectures are amazing. TAKE HIS CLASS. You will not regret it. Such a nice guy and is so kind. Gives you tons of extra credit. Smartest guy so passionate about what he is teaching and super engaging
Dr. Ripley is an excellent professor. If you take a class with him, assume it'll be great. This class consists of multiple weekly discussion boards (super easy), a midterm exam, final exam, and final paper(5 pages). As long as you keep up with the work and pay attention to the lectures (just watch them lol), you'll do great on all assignments.
Dr. Ripley is one of my fav professors at ASU. If you are PoliSci major, he's a must take. This class was so interesting and fun, yet a little bit of hard work. He goes by a points scale for grading and offers so much extra credit - so much that you hypothetically don't have to write the final paper for an A+ in the class.
If there is one piece of advice I can tell you from my four years at ASU as a poli sci major it is TAKE PROFESSOR RIPLEY. He is so kind and made me actually look forward to going to class every time I have had a class with him. He is incredibly knowledgable on the content that he teaches but still makes lectures super interesting and engaging.
Professor Ripley is the best professor ever. Seriously so smart and knowledgable. You will learn so much in any of his classes. This is the second class I've taken w/ him and I'm taking one more next semester before I graduate. I wish I found his classes sooner. He is hilarious and so accessible. JUST TAKE HIS CLASS! You won't regret it!
Ripley is awesome. His lectures are entertaining, engaging and informative. There are a decent amount of assignments, but nothing is too difficult as long as you read the text and pay attention in class. Would highly recommend for SGS students!
This has been one of my favorite classes. I've enjoyed the topics we discussed and it wasn't too many assignments considering that it was a half semester class. If you take him, you will not regret it!
I was excited to take a class by Ripley based on the reviews & some friends I have who loved him but tbh, I was pretty underwhelmed once I actually got into the class. He's very knowledgeable..there's no doubt about that but it feels like he just doesn't really enjoy teaching at ASU..like he's ashamed to be a prof at a state school. Easy class tho
He is quite funny and a relaxed grader just do the assignments and quizzes and you will earn an A.
He only wants to make jokes it's hard to concentrate
You literally have to be the densest person alive to not get an A+ in this class. Class is comprised of discussion boards that are based on his YouTube videos (just pull up the transcript & ctrl+f), quizzes/tests that are incredibly simple, and a final paper you don't even have to do to get an A+. Would recommend for anyone with an IQ over 12.
One of the best professors I've had at ASU. You will learn a lot and not be stressed by overly difficult work. The lectures are the main form of learning, but there is a small amount of readings and videos to be watched. The quiz's are open note but honestly as long as you watch the lectures you'll be able to breeze through them.
Ripley is GREAT! Like awesome. If you want to have a fun and engaging class, TAKE HIM. He is hilarious and very interactive and nice. The point structure he has will make sure you never fail this course I PROMISE. I love this guy and I recommend you take his other classes like I will be taking in the coming years. He gives all his books for free.
endearingly passionate, laid back, patient. his voice is a bit jarring at first, but it fits his sense of humor and quickly grows on you lol. you could probably pass the class just by watching his youtube videos and taking the quizzes, but it'd be a disservice to yourself if you dont show up for lectures, he's very entertaining
Quite the funny professor. Kept me engaged even though research methods is not my thing. Sometimes talks rapidly and goes off on tangents. Chaotic but entertaining. I absolutely loved it and will take him for the next class. Wish I took Riply's lower level courses.
I love Dr. Ripley! This man made going to class fun! He made ever lecture interesting and funny. He is not politically biased and very open to all. His grading system is point based and gives chances for higher than a 100%. Only a few tests, one easy paper, and a decent amount of quizzes. Please take him he's amazing!
If you have the opportunity to take a class with Ripley, do it! You won't regret it, he makes his lectures fun and interesting. He is open-minded and does not judge other people's opinions. His discussions in class were engaging and he is quite funny.
Professor Ripley is great and super funny. His class consists of discussion board questions, a midterm and final exam (online and open book) plus a final paper. He uses a number scale grading system meaning just try to get all the points you can out out 100. There will be a lot of extra credit opportunities which could lead up to 15 extra points.
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He is truly amazing. So funny, witty, and caring. His class is set up so you would literally have to try to fail. I have taken his POS364 and SGS305 and had an AMAZING experience in both. He knows his stuff, and he really cares about his students. You will never be bored taking his class.
There are not enough positive things I can say about Dr. Ripley. He treats online and in person students like equals. They lectures while sometimes challenging to follow at first, are great once you adapt. He offers resume and grad school advise. If there is a professor that cares about every student its him. He should be the head of the POS dept.
I took POS364, currently in POS465, and next semester POS361. I missed a week of tests and assignments due to the flu & still got an A. Easy grading structure, quick to respond to emails, informative lectures, and wants you to do well. I wish more professors were like him. 1000% recommend him if you care about your GPA & want to learn.
If you want to have a relaxed class and enjoy yourself, this professor is great for you. You just need to attend his class and participate. It's hard to fail because he gives you a lot of options to help raise your grade. He makes a ton of jokes, and they're hilarious. Overall, it's an easy class where you can have fun!
This guy is great. I mean, he's just hilarious to listen to and he really cares about his students learning. I would 100% recommend any class that he teaches.
He is very knowledgeable and very funny. He encourages students to think outside the box. If you can take any of his classes, you should!
Truly so funny and keeps his class entertained. I learned lots and will be taking classes with him in the future for this reason.
A great professor with lots of experience to go along with it. Discussion posts, quizzes, and tests are very simple as long as you watch the lectures.
Love Dr. Ripley! I have taken two of his courses and enrolled in another next semester. Be prepared for lots of lectures and discussion boards, but they are enjoyable. Do the work and an A+ is easy.
Professor Ripley is a great guy. You'd have to be a dumby not to pass his class. Just consists of weekly discussion posts and a few quizzes. Doesn't use Honorlock on quzzies, midterm, or final. Literally the easiest A+ you can get.
Weekly discussion boards about a reading or short video. Then you go to class and discuss the subject. Small class, so good debates were had. Free A if you put in any effort. If you do all the discussion boards, the final essay is optional. Great professor, would take again. Funny, has lots of experience, relates to real world. Perfect teacher.
Please please please take a class with Professor Ripley if you can. Attendance wasn't mandatory but I went to every single one because I really liked the course material and Professor Ripley makes it really fun. Probably the only professor I had that actually made me laugh. Super easy class and you'd genuinely have to be a rock if you failed.
Honestly he is the best professor that I ever had in my journey at ASU. I took more than 2 classes with him and he makes the material interesting and you will want to come to class even though attendance are not part of your grade. However, take any class with him because you will learn so many things and enjoy his lectures.
Professor Ripley's an awesome guy who knows his stuff. Took him for a one-credit elective (national security) and enjoyed the in-class debates. Healthily encourages participation without being a stickler about it. Would recommend for any class.
Mr Ripley is the best. He's very funny and likes engaging with every student. Be prepared to have to speak out in class but it's nothing too crazy. Attendance is mandatory and homework will take a little while every week but still quite easy. No way to not get an A+ as long as you go to class and do your homework.
Dr. Ripley is the best professor I've ever had. I took three of his classes at ASU. He is not only hilarious and super down to earth, but also SO passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches. I feel like I learned so much from him. Please take him!
Hands down the best professor I have ever had. His grading system is amazing with lots of extra credit opportunity to gain some points back. He is able to make lectures entertaining and not boring. Always clear on his expectations and how quizzes are completed. Will definitely take him again.
Charles (THE GOAT) Ripley is undoubtably the greatest educator in all of history (both ancient and modern). It was an honor to have someone who is not only obviously ferociously intelligent, but also undeniably SEXY, as an educator. When I am walking to class, I can sense his aura from like 4 buildings away. 10/10 would recommend!
This is the greatest professor I've ever taken, he is extremely funny and makes the class really easy to engage with. He has discussion boards that are fairly simple, he also has debates in where it gets really interesting to see both sides of the debates. HES THE GOATTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
The class is really easy with one of my favorite parts being that he has debates where you can listen to both sides of the debate. Usually they get intense and encourages you to come into class just to hear the debate.
Professor Ripley is the GOAT. Had him for POS361 and POS364 in my last semester, and he is one of the best professors I have ever had. I wish I had him when I was still in person, but I have no complaints. Its a lot of work, but he is hilarious, and he will go in depth on a lot of important topics
Though this was an Icourse, this online professor outdoes almost every professor I have had at ASU. He is very knowledgeable in his subject matter and gives enthusiastic lectures. There is also so much extra credit, an easy A, while still absorbing the information.
Dr. Ripley may be one of the best professors at ASU. His course had lots of assignments, but it's easy to get full credit on them. At least 20 extra credit points built into the course. Highly recommend taking this class.
Great professor and such an easy class if you just do the work. Final exam is 1/3 of grade but pretty easy and all other assignments are easy discussion boards or quizzes but you still have to put in some effort to complete them. Also a research requirement for this specific class.
Dr. Ripley is the best professor I've had at ASU. His personality and teaching style make his classes one-of-a-kind! The course isn't too difficult; some assignments take a while, but it's easy to get full credit. Dr. Ripley makes class engaging and constantly cracks jokes. He makes a lot of political jokes, so if you're easily offended, be wary.
This was probably one of the best professors I had for ASU. I took the online course for POS 364 Natl Security/Intell/Terrorism with professor Ripley and it was very enjoyable. It required weekly particpation but he is a fair grader and also includes all the information you will need so it is easy to follow along and complete the work.
Ripley is literally one of the funniest professors I've had so far. Class content is super easy, and quizzes are even easier if you show up for lectures because he covers everything in class! Even though attendance was optional, a lot of us showed up because the class was really fun! Would highly recommend even if you aren't a polisci major
The prof has a lot of achievements under his belt, yet doesn't he's very chill and doesn't have a serious vibe. There is one "debate" component where you have to stand in front of the class and do a memorized mini-speech about a current event, but the rest of the semester is a complete breeze and you can kind of forget ab this class after that.
Professor Ripley is one of the best professors I have ever had in ASU, if I can retake the class I would. He's very simple and straight forward that makes it very hard to fail his class. The only thing I disliked about the class was the fact how short it was. If I had to go through college I would most definitely have him again. Highly recommend!!!
Absolute legend of a professor, gave a ton of extra credit opportunities, and was overall very well-taught. Incorporated jokes and gags into his lectures without being distracting, and was very understanding when it came to questions. Absolutely would take again.
This class was very easy. Quizzes and tests were not challenging, and most of the class was just memorization, which was a bit disappointing. Professor Ripley is very entertaining, although sometimes the tangents can get a bit tiring. Lectures are skippable if you read the free textbook. Discussion boards are incredibly easy.
While I fundamentally disagree with Professor Ripley on political ideologies, he is one of the best teachers I have had. The class is very heavy on discussion boards, however, they are very simple and easy. There is one midterm and one final, both very easy. I strongly encourage this class as a GPA booster, there is one mandatory debate (no notes).
His teaching style is very unscripted to the point that I don't even learn anything. I don't understand how this is an upper division course - the discussion boards, based off his wandering YouTube lectures, are like 8 surface-level questions each and can be answered with like 2-3 sentences. The learning objectives were very unclear.
One of the best professors at ASU! Do yourself a favor and take Dr. Ripley! He's a great professor, his lectures are not difficult at all! His videos are pre recorded and have notes in the video. He's funny and his work is not difficult at all. Great professor, any negative reviews, were either lazy or crazy!
Best professor I have had at ASU. He is entertaining and so knowledgeable. He has so much life experience and the best stories. His course will seem like a good amount of reading or lectures but he keeps you very interested and intrigued. I would 10000% take any courses with him.
Dr. Ripley is the best professor I've ever had! He's so funny and his classes are always so entertaining. He has a great grading system that allows for extra credit. He's also very open to hearing everyone's views and is not biased. He's genuinely the best professor!
I was actually sad when the course ended. I enjoyed the "On The Ground Lectures", and his grading was easy. Most of the work are discussion posts from his lectures. The quizzes were easy. I wish he taught more classes because he's the best professor I've had so far.
Professor Ripley does a few things very well. He's funny and entertaining in his lectures, but because of this, he's also very fun to learn from and it makes the class fly by. Prepare to read a bit, and take advantage of every opportunity to participate, it will be worth your time and effort. I can't wait to take more classes with him.
I loved Dr. Ripley; he is my favorite professor I have ever had, and I would take every class with him if I could. The class was a point basis rather than a percentage, with extra credit built in. His lectures were very interesting. I have never retained so much information from a class. Please take a class with him; he is amazing.
Dr. Ripley is a fantastic professor, although this was an online class, he took the time to create online lecture videos that are easy to keep up with. As long as you listen to his lectures, you will grasp everything you need to know. Use your DB assignments as references on his exams. He really cares about the class he teaches!
very funny and knowledgeable guy. i took his class on national security and i loved it. it's very discussion based and the material is engaging. def one of my fav profs.
He's my all time favorite professor! He's so funny and makes the most boring topics interesting. He is very respectful of everyone's beliefs. I have taken many classes with him just because I love his humor. His grading system is also super nice and allows for extra credit. He's an easy grader and assignments aren't hard.
This guy is literally the best professor I have ever had. He knows what he is talking about, and is able to break complicated topics into very simple ways. Have taken him for almost every Political Science class, and he is just the best.
Definitely my favorite professor at ASU! Prof Ripley is very energetic and entertaining with his lessons. I took his national security LIA 194; it was very discussion-based, and he has a way of engaging everyone. If you have the opportunity to take any class with him, do it!!
GOAT. Super easy assignments and only one debate to show up to and talk for a few minutes to earn points. Lectures are funny and interesting. Honestly if you find a way to get a bad grade in this class you should re-evaluate where your at in life.
This professor is hilarious and makes class extremely fun. I came to class every day excited because I genuinely enjoyed learning from him. I'm glad I took this class and I cant wait for him to be my professor again in the future.
Through his lectures Professor Ripley immerses the students in his curriculum by engaging via videos and questions followed by great feedback. He makes himself available through zoom office hours and for a group meeting at the end of the semester to discuss the finals. He's hilarious, his learning style is engaging. Great at communicating via email
Lots of opportunities for extra credit! Funny and engaging. Assignments are super easy and I love how the topics feel relevant and lots of applicable concepts to current events.
I really enjoyed his classes. I've taken 2 so far! I would honestly take only his classes for political science. He is awesome, he teaches in a manner that you actually retain the information. 10/10 recommend.
