Best math professor around! Very helpful in the office. Extremely difficult yet decently fair exam.

test are too hard!!!
Very good teacher
good teacher for hard working students. but we are future engineers...come on...ease it up a little Roth!
I am not in his class, but he is kind of the best one amont math 133 profs. and don't even think about taking math 133 with Wilbur Jonsson.
roth man, if u r readin this, plz curve our final, plz.. i dont want to take it again with u.
... :|
McGill should be ashamed of having such an awful professor. His BVP course focuses on memorization of assignments, rather than the understanding of the course material. Material is far too packed for a 4 credit course. Grading is awful, awful, awful!
Horrible. Prepare to be ****ed during the final!
Failed about half the class, apparently because he was pissed off that the teacher last term gave marks that were too good. Lots of folks who failed got A's next term with a different prof. Aside from that, he's ok :-)
this class is really hard. rothpresents everything that is needed, with a lot of time and energy you can pass this your first time.
i took this class, and barely passed. i dont know if it was bc of him, or by some stroke of luck, bc the final was NOTHING LIKE WE DID IN CLASS
I hate linear algebra....
Ok, here's the deal. I failed twice, then I passed cause I understood what to do. This guy is the best teacher... IF YOU GO TO EVERY EVERY EVERY CLASS!!... u CANT catch up... TOO MUCH MATERIAL... so just go to this class and ditch the rest.
This guy has compressed two 4 credit classes into one. He gives you one 15 question assignment every week that takes you 12 hours or more to do, three 3h tests plus a final. The key is to understand the concepts not memorize.
if you can memorize 100+ type of questions, go for it. else u'll have to understand what's going on. either way, u're gonna have to work ur ass off - mainly on assignments - to do well.
Extremely helpful and effective teacher, it's just that his courses are too condensed. My advice: budget BVP as 6 credits, and study the notes obsessively: understand _every_ detail, example, equation, derivation. Do this from day one, and you'll do well
somebody is hard! u have no idea what hard is until u meet him
You will learn more than you ever thought possible but this course is hell. The teaching is terrific but there's about 3 courses worth of material here. Study your a** off from day 1 and GET AS MUCH HELP AS POSSIBLE. 1st course I ever failed.
Garbage...Human garbage
as easy as it gets... i loooooove BVP, i wish they had BVP part 2. thnkx God i took it before they cancel it. roth is amazing when he explains bvp, he is sexy and intelligent. i really learned a lot of this course, not just the math, the quotes, the jokes
Tell you guys the truth: I've never attended his lecture and just go to class twice for exams. You know what? I got an A. It's not because I'm smart. It is because I simply copied his notes from other students and read them, plus undersdand all the as
he fed us pringles!!!
Probably my best teacher in all of McGill. More dedicated to his students than anybody I have ever seen. Lots of work but teaches NOTHING irrelevant and all his notes and assignments cover the exam material, nothing else.
He is a really good teacher. He doesnt answer many questions well and is intimidating at first. But if he likes u he's nice. His exams are identical to his notes... u could get a 95 and about easy. I did :-)
A good prof. His notes is really helpful. He would like to make every his student interested in the course they take though it is difficult.
Awesome! He writes every word and every number in a different colour and color codes ALL of his notes for every class!ive never come across a teacher who has got even one standing ovation after class & he's got 2 so far.hes a fab teacher very helpful.ppl 4rm other sections attend his lectures
I think this course should be more organized, you have to copy the note there useful and do the assignments
Very colourful class.
Prof. Roth is an extremely helpful and patient teacher. He is always willing to help you, whether or not it is his office hours. He actually cares whether or not you understandt he material :constantly asking how his lectures are and looking to improve, rare in profs. A super prof. Take his class!
He's super helpful. He's probably the best with his office hours of any of my profs. He does all of his examples in coloured chalk which helps out so much. It helps you see what corresponds with what.
Good professor. Makes the tough material easy to understand. I like the colored chalk during lectures, it's an awesome idea.
He seems to be doing the most he can. The problem is that he expects too much from the students... Lots of memorization and all...
Awesome Prof... my best this semester. Lots of examples, not so many dervations but very clear and consise. Hope to take more courses with him!
He is really devoted to his students and tries very hard to instill the same amount of interest for the subject into his students as he has. Likes to crack jokes (some good, some questionable). He has very little tolerance for slackers though, but neither does the course itself.
Dr. Roth gives clear lectures, good notes, lots of examples. BUT he's incredibly disrespectful... he expects too much from students and makes you feel stupid regularly. If you don't get something you can expect him to help but not before he tells you it's easy and you shouldn't be having problems.
very carring teacher. exams are all from assignments. If you go over the assignments you will ace the exams
Explains everything claerly with colored chalk. Gets somewhat offended when you ask questions. Passionate about Linear Albegra.
It's true; he is very clear when he explains examples, the only problem is, he doesn't give enough examples! Which is really bad.. Like, you ALWAYS face too many problems when doing your assignments, each one of them.. Oh and he's very **** with Arabs =S
For the most part, a really easy course- exams straight from lecture notes! Prof Roth is hands down one of the nicest people I've met, although he can be a little testy in class. Funny, helpful, and engaging.
I dont agree with the other comments. Roth is rude and arrogant. You can do ok by memorizing but he is tough and only cares about the handful of best students. If you are bellow average you are held in contempt by him. I feel the positive comments here were written by him to make himself look good.
Funny guy, expects a lot from students, even if it invloved memorizing 3 page problems. Very clear in class and tries to invlove the students in the lecture. Loves it when someone tells him he's doing a good job, but he really is though.
gives good assignments, and classes are clear and always willing to help students. but the exam is hard...
Extremely well organized. Great examples. Always gives full solutions to assignments & very useful supplementary handouts. Long assignments, but worth it... that's what you have to do for math classes, right? Coloured chalk makes stuff on the board incredibly clear.
He's very passionate about the subject and always willing to help. Encourage you to use his office hours if you have difficulty and is always there. If you listen to what he has to say and work on the examples he gives, you should do well. If you have difficulty, use his office hours. Other comments about him being disrespectful are way off!!
BAD TEACHER! Dont ever attend his classes. He just plunges headlong into things w/o proper intros, elaborations etc. I am highly irritated by him.
He loves all the material, and he will pour as much material into a course as he can. His classes require a lot of dedication. He repeats questions from old exams/midterms often.
Knows his stuff very well. Quite clear though moves very fast.
Excellent teaching! Great visuals with coloured chalk -- math in living colour. Nice solutions to assignments given. Assignments can be tough, but he's always willing to help out. Study class examples well because there will be similar ones on tests. (basically, be able to do any example you've seen in class and you'll be good!)
The best teacher I have had in university. Passionate, dedicated to students, excellent in conveying a difficult subject. Professor Roth goes in depth into the subject with humour and enthusiasm. He is always available for consultation in his office and will easily provide extra material for those who need help. Overall, a fantastic prof.
I think all the good comments about this 'professor' were written my Roth himself! He is no way any good, just useless.. unhelpful, biased. Unclear in so many ways, disorganised. Does not elaborate key ideas at the on-set, just starts bleating abt them. Damn, you will have a v. tough time with this 'professor'. He just sucks..
Amazing! I am an exchange student from Ecole Centrale Nantes, and I never had such a good professor. His classes are demanding, but he is helpful, clear, enthusiastic (actually... passionate is more correct), and fun. He covers a lot of material with interesting examples. The assignments resemble the class tests. Certainly my selection of the year.
Best math professor ever! He managed to get me passionate about math again. He is amazing, enthusiastic and very intelligent. His classes are not easy, but if you make the effort, you can easily get above 95% for the course. It's worth taking seriously. I'll remember his classes at McGill for a very long time. Great professor!
He is dedicated and shows the true meaning of a professor. He wants people to learn but when he sees that the student is not trying, he gets mad. If he sees you're a hard worker and not just going to see him for the answers, then he'll be v kind and won't laugh at your questions. Approachable, and funny, the class won't b as hard as it really is.
Excellent teacher who is very helpful and shares his wisdom to his students
Prof Roth is the most outstanding math instructor I have ever met in my life! He has great passion for teaching, abundant patience and assistance for students, and great sense of humour in class. His teaching is so impeccable that he seems to have the magic wand to turn the boring math content into purely enjoyment. And plus, the exam is very fair!
I have followed Prof Roth for 4 semesters and my gratitude to him is beyond any word expression because he has been able to inspire an untalented math student to discover the inner potential and achieve the best.Under his tremendous encouragement, I am not only learning math in his class but also becoming very confident and fearless for math.
The best teacher I have ever had. Always available for his students, enthusiastic, loves his work and breaks down everything so that everyne can understand. I have never encountered a teacher who was so good and who loved his job so much. I urge anyone who has the possibly to take a class with him to do it.
Prof. Roth is a great teacher. His dedication to teaching and willingness to open his students' minds make his classes unique. His unique way of writing class material in the blackboard (using full-color chalks) makes understanding of his class much easier. Charles Roth is a great teacher.
Demanding, but his presentation of complex and heavy material is extremely elegant. Expects you to put in the effort, but his dedication and passion are motivating. Best math teacher so far.
Hands down the best professor i've ever had. Helpful, encouraging, and extremely clear in his presentation. He challenges you but rewards effort, so if you work hard, you generally do pretty well.
He is such a great prof. Willing to help and always is prepared. One of the BEST math profs, along with Axel
He's such a sweet prof, puts in a lot of effort in teaching and really wants his students to do well. So he gets really disappointed when being let down by his students. Very clear and organized.
SOOOO NICE, yet the matrial he teaches SUKS. confusing, yet hes cool and very funny!
Coloured chalk and randomn quotes.
love the colours!
colored chalk
I love this man to no end. The colored chalk always brightens my day.. especially considering i have it right after calc. He is the sweetest most inspirational old man and is endlessly giving extra office hours and printed notes to help the studend
great proff for theory
If you need to take Linear Algebra, Prof. Roth is your person! He is fantastic, wonderful and teaches with clarity and passion. He is always willing to help. That is needed in a difficult course like linear algebra. You are in good hands with Prof. Roth. There should be more teachers like him

I loved his enthusiasm for math...he really loves math, which although not always useful fo students is quite inspiring
Hands down best math prof at McGill. He demands a lot in his Ad Calc class, but is VERY helpful in his office hrs. You'll do well if you go to class and do all the work he assigns, and will leave with a very solid understanding of the material. I got by in Calc 3 by BS-ing, but now I really know what I'm doing after taking Ad Calc with Roth.
Roth is a fantastic prof...his coloured chalk is refreshing and makes concepts clearier/easier to understand. Love the combover! His notes were very helpful especially the ones handed out in class. Had extra tutorial classes every week!! Make sure you get to class early, always full. Class itself is hard. Really hard+ difficult final. Worth 80%!
very good teacher.knows his material and likes his material too.tries to make math interesting.first midterm, easy. second, average. final ... crazy. practice, practice, practice.
Very good teacher that obviously loves what he is doing. Do not count on the final to pass. The midterms are easy so try to get as many point out of them as possible, because the final is insane.
Though I felt unprepared before the final, the old finals with solutions helped a ton and in the end I felt confident about linear algebra
Really interesting and good prof

Loved him in Ad Calc MATH 314, love him even more in PDE MATH 319. I wish he taught more pure math courses so I could keeping having him as a prof. Yes, his exams are very challenging, but he is extremely helpful and friendly outside of class, and more importantly, you leave the course with a solid understanding of the material.
cool prof.!!!!!
nah, nah, nah, nah .nah, nah, nah, nah .heyyyyy goodbye.... .bad course good prof!!!!! hard stuff....
Pr. Roth is truly a great teacher. Take him and you won't regret it at all !
The professor has a good sense of humor and try's to make a dry topic interesting... Do not rely on the text book alone. The materials covered in class and assignments provided are an excellent review guide for exams. I am planning to take another course with this professor.
Terrible teacher. His class is purely based on memorizing and he gives insanely long tests that are 3 hours long. Worst math teacher I have had by far in my life. He takes his class way too seriously and thinks that his math class is the only class that matters. Avoid at all costs
It isn't everyday that a professor gets up in front of his class an tells them that they can follow him into an extraordinary world, if they want to...and then begins teaching math. Prof Roth did that every day. He is one of the most demanding teachers, but to his credit, he is one of the most dedicated profs to the success of his students.
His class is very hard, and it does noe evaluate comprehension very well, students just memorize everything and don't learn anything.
best math prof in mcgill. takes you deep into all the proofs and the real meaning behind the numbers. although a difficult exam.
best prof ever!
Very dedicated, and the colours make the class.
His classes are mostly incomprehensible and he has absolutely no clarity at all. Taking this course was a real pain because of the huge amount of work you need to study(learn by hard). His finals are much too hard and we can't apply anything from his notes. He is quite useless . Avoid if you can at all cost.
good prof, reasonable course. try to understand every thing the he does in class and practice if you wanna do well on the final. the midterms are pretty straightforward close to the assignments.
math 271 is an easy but demanding course. The teacher does an awesome job and helps a lot. He's also funny. Attendance to class is necessary: you may not understand everything at the first time, but go at least to take notes. The midterms are pretty easy and straightforward . for the final, study well from the notes and assignments, and you'll do very well.
i love calclus and have always done well, but this course was a killer.. mainly cuz he didn't follow a textbook. he is a great prof tho, but this course is very hard. assignments r crazy long but he gives full solns after. midterm and final resemble the assignments A LOT! repeats questions often.. STUDY!!
Most helpful and methodical!
Avoid at all cost
Easily the best math prof in the department. He expects you to work *a lot* and *very hard*, but he's very helpful and so motivating. That being said, his exams are all about writing as much and as fast as you can, so be prepared.
great prof, assignments are terribly long though
I've never had interest in math so much until I took this class with him. He is no doubt the best math professor I ever have!!! In fact, this is the first class in my whole semester in mcgill that I've never skipped. Very humourous too. Love him!
He's the kind of prof that "PUT" you on the right track of getting an A in that class, well, as long as you follow the "track". Exams are hard, but extremely FAIR at the same time.
he goes mighty fast sometimes
Real pain... Don't be fooled, you'll see.
Great professor, best I've had and am looking to take more classes with him in the future.
Professor Roth is no doubt a genius. His greatest weakness lies in his inability to understand that not everyone loves math as much as he. He teaches the course as if students are in honors math, which causes frustration since I am in engineering. He uses color chalk which is cool, but he must spend a fortune on dry-cleaning his suits.
This prof is one of the best math prof no doubt. extremly dedicated and he even spent 6h to review all the materials for the final with us. Take him, if you do your part, you will get an A.
very MEAN
avoid by all costs!!!!
I got an A in PDE's about 3 months ago. Upon trying to return to course material I must say I am unable to recollect how to solve any of his problems. To make matters worse his "course pack" is a grossly unorganized monster that becomes a hell to wade through. I'd like to say avoid this prof but unfortunately he is the only prof for PDE''s.
Being in honours math, this class demanded tremendous efforts of memorization (NOT UNDERSTANDING) with very little reward. (MATH 375)
He's the best. Don't know what these people are talking about. PDE's is hard... and if you messed up ODEs and Adv Calc, that's your problem. PDEs is long, arduous, and does require you to understand loads of techniques... hence memorization. The course is kind of disorganizaed, but as long as you follow him, you're golden A will appear
He loves what hes doing. Most cheerful prof Ive had.Available pretty much everyday in his office. He organizes the tons of material in the best poss. way.I assume those who say hes disorganized didnt attend and used his coursepack(Its disorg. and incompl)It gets real tough at the end but he does all he can to prepare u. even had 3hr review w/ hints
If you find this prof mean/hard/terrible, it is a strong indication that you should not be taking math. The course is hard when you put little effort in to it. Shocker. Avoid if you just need math as a requirement and/or want an easy A. For those who genuinely want to learn math, I strongly recommend this prof.
Great prof! If you study well, you will be able to do good. PDE's are not that hard after all. Very useful for mechanical engineers...
Amazing Teacher :)
A true gentleman. This is a very difficult course. It was actually the toughest class of this semester for me. I actually ended up with a higher grade in this class than any others. He is a very inspiring man and he encourages students to try their best and "Have some fun with the wonderful problems." A brilliant and inspring man
Very tough class because there is A LOT of material to know. Assigns 6+ brutally long homeworks which absolutely need to be done if you want to pass/get good grade. He usually takes Midterm questions directly from his assignments. 3 Hour midterms assigned in the after-class hours. I Highly recommend both Copi EUS booklets for the PDE & Sturm-L part
Very helpful and always ends Friday classes with a motivational quote, funny story or brings potato chips to students. Workload is quite heavy though and you'll regret missing a class as the pace is quick.
Really nice guy, good attitude. Really cares about students, but at this point all he does is just derive formulas on the board, doesn't really explain anything that well. Long exams, but I guess fair considering they're basically the assignments, but crammed into 3 hours.
Very good prof and really clear and very helpful. Make sure you go to the lectures. If you miss even 3 lectures you're basically f***d. Warning: I don't like the exams or tests. He doesn't test understanding but if you can memorize questions from the assignments. If you don't do the assignments or don't memorize examples in class, you failed.
A true gentleman. Not the best teacher in terms of explaining materials, but can well be over-compensated by tons of office hours (available for every single day). Be sure to know every single (long, tough) assignments because at least half of the mid-term and final are similar questions, with different numbers, if any.
Although the material is difficult, he makes the class a fun place to be. The midterms are very fair, if you've done the assignments then there aren't any surprises. Overall he's a great prof who really cares about his students and gives good advice.
Helpful. Not that hard.
Good teacher, but kind of tough. Long assignment with a lot of calculations. You won't get bored in his class. He goes pretty fast and his classes are fun.
Wonderful and amazing prof. inspirational, i would love to take another class with him, although i worked lots for his class but what i learned, i learned forever, his assignments are long and hard but if you do them you learn the material really well and guaranteed an A, not only in his class but any class after that since you have a strong base.
By far the most dedicated, enthusiastic, and inspiring teacher I've ever had. Explains difficult material very well. I always knew I liked math, but before taking Prof. Roth's class I never realized that I loved it. You couldn't ask for a better professor.
Had this class at 8 30 in the morning during the winter, totally worth it. The prof is in love with what he teaches and he cares SO much about his students. You have to work hard but it pays of BIG TIME in the long run. He is definitely the best Prof at McGill
his course was much harder than the same course taught by as different teacher, 1 semester previous. he says that the curriculum is not to his liking and teaches things he decides should be taught.
A really good prof and he loves teaching. But it is difficult to understand him in class and it is really difficult to do well in his tests. Make sure that you read his notes regularly and UNDERSTAND the assignments he gives. His midterm and finals will be entirely based on those. And it would be quite helpful if you attend his classes.
A very dedicated teacher with tons of office hours. He doesn't quite follow the regular course curriculum which makes it very hard to follow if you miss a lecture. He doesn't really follow the textbook however his notes and assignments are so good you won't ever need the textbook. Overall a very good teacher. Highly recommended.
I did not like him at first because he made everything harder than they should...However, as you get used to his ways, it gets better...I like him for being so available, helpful and decently clear..He is also very concerned about your success and prepares you really well for adcalc, and this definitely will give you an edge...
He expects some work from your part, not an easy class, I didnt miss a single class although it was at 8:30, studied his notes and assignments very well and got an A. I am taking now Math264 and its like a joke, 3/4 is stuff from 262. I hardly recommend him, compared to Sancho
Great teacher who really loves math. Attendance is a must if u wanna do well. He has made a coursepack that contains everything he's said in class and that's so helpful. A lot of office hours and is very helpful when u go to him. You can learn a lot of stuff in one short term. Anyway, PDE is really hard and you have to put into a lot of effort.
Didn’t think an 8:30 class in winter could make me LOVE math....I learned SO much in his class!!! An awesome professor: clear, enthusiastic, and fair. Looking forward to PDEs :)))
Honest Opinion: Most Elitist Prof ever. The material is difficult because it is compressed. He appears kind yes, but after exams, he calls out those who did better than others, so he's an ass-hole. Just so you know...I know some people really like him, but they're the ones who need a lot of attention and enjoy the elitism.
He is proud of the fact that he makes all his courses really hard. However, he is so terrible at explaining the material that you always have to go back and study the notes on your own cause you don't understand it right away. Avoid him if possible and take Trudeau...
he's pretty fair and he absolutely loves math. however, his midterms and finals are hard. make sure you do his written assignment by yourself so it will definitely help you on the midterms and finals.
A complete gentleman. A very hard course, but fair/challenging exams and very hard assignments. Be sure to do assignments on your own, but the course itself is insane at the beginning. Make use of the office hours.
Extremely helpful and clearly wants his students to succeed, but makes the course very challenging. Exams are fair and extensively based on what's covered in class and in the assignments. I found his lecture style to be engaging but not always that clear.
He teaches ODE in a very different way than any other profs... Hard and long assignments, midterm and exam
Best professor I've had in my 2.5 years at McGill. Very hard working and diligent, always available for questions, gives detailed solutions for assignments, lots of office hours, takes the time to give tutorials before midterms and exam. He puts in many times the effort of an average prof, and expects the same from you. You will learn a lot.
If you want an A, look elsewhere. This guy takes pride in making the class as hard as possible. The final was brutal.
This guy is epic. If you want to actually math, take him. Most probably best teacher in the math department. The assignments are a must. DO them and re-DO them. Some of the problems on the exams are exactly from the assignements! Tough course, but if you study well, then easy A
Great teacher ... starts every subject by explaining the theoretical part of it which confuses me but his in class practice problems are good and he uses 4-5 different colors to explain his lecture, it didn't confuse. When he says watch out this is important PAY ATTENTION since most of his in class problems were in the final/midtem
Hes a good teacher with probably all his courses u must do the assignments and work very hard but is rewarding at the end. Worth taking
Best prof at McGill. So passionate about Math, great class!
He is totally confusing and all over the place in terms of his teaching. The course pack is terrible. That said,it's not hard to do well in that class: Just memorize every single question on the assignments.Hopefully, he's gonna retire soon.
Best prof if you love Math and enjoy solving difficult problems. However, if you are looking for a an easier time, do this course in the summer and avoid Charles Roth. Charles Roth's classes require a lot of effort and time.
Really really helpful! It's a hard class but he's very passionate about the subject, and you can tell when he teaches. He is very approachable and has extensive office hours to meet with students. To take this class, you definitely need prior exposure to Calc II because the only things that are taught as new concepts are the parts from Calc III.
He looks fine at the beginning of the course, but you realize soon enough that his writing his unreadable and he uses the boards in a random manner, making it hard to take notes. He has very few office hours that were not at the same time at each week, and you must take an appointment with him. His assignments are endless and boring.
Best prof I've had at McGill. He makes topics that are difficult much more clear, and he's always there for students, even holding extra review classes before exams. He makes detailed solutions to all assignments, which are very similar to the exams. Puts in 10x the effort of regular profs to help students - Very hard-working, passionate prof!
With Roth its all about how you present your work. I solve every single question on the midterm perfectly and got a 90%. If what you are good at is english and organization, and you suck at math, then Roth is your prof.
Dr. Roth is the best prof. I have had at McGill. He is very dedicated to helping students and puts in a ton of effort to be his best. When you go to his office hours he is always really happy to help and can even make hard material seem easy. He not only teaches you math, but also how to be a good student and succeed in University. He is the best.
Professor Roth is amongst the finest professors I've ever had the pleasure of learning from at McGill. His passion for the material and dedication to his students are unparalleled, reflected in his detailed, helpful, and interesting notessolutionssupplementary material, as well as in the fairness of examsassignments. An absolute must-take.
Prof. Roth is a great lecturer. Having spent years refining his craft, he presents the material in an organized and easy to follow manner, and welcomes questions. People complain that his assignments are long, but that's how his class should be taught. You solve ODEs in real life, so you better practice them.
One of the best profs in McGill. Puts a lot of effort into his course. His course content is huge and his exams are difficult. But he gladly helps students if they ask for help. He has plenty of office hours so make use of them.
Have had 3 courses (Calc A&B, ODEs) with Prof. Roth. He covers wide range of material and expects interest. If you run into him outside of class, he will ask how the course is going. Un-enthusiastic answers scorned. If he doesn't like you he will make it personal (verbal demeaning), will hold a grudge. Memorize hw solns and you'll do well on exam.
Professor Roth is phenomenal. He was kind enough to print out his lectures notes for everyone to follow along instead of trying to write out our own notes during lectures. He was always available to help after and provides plenty of extra credit opportunities. Just learn the material and it's straight forward!
My favourite professor at mcgill! Heavy workload, but its well worth it because his exams are almost solely made up of classroom examples and assignment questions. Really approachable guy, wants his students to do well and really wants everyone to enjoy the course. Do the assignments, go to class and you'll get a good grade.
Failed this class the first time. If you got below a B+ in MATH 263 and MATH 264, this is what you should do: 1. Go to all EPTS and Tutorials. I learnt the most during the tutorial sections rather than class. 2. Ensure you are able to do every question in the assignment without looking at the solutions! DON'T MEMORISE. 3. Get a tutor
Best professor you'll ever have! Really passionate about what he teaches. Do the assignments and you'll be fine.
Really good professor. Very long assignments but not too challenging and really helpful to absorb the material of the course. A lot of work is required with this professor, but work is rewarded.
One Big Advice: " DO ALL ASSIGNMENTS ON YOUR OWN" dont copy or think yeah I will understand it before exam cause I am smart. Easy A if u do the homeworks cause the exams are homeworks.
Difficult course due to the volume of material but lectures are clear. Assignments are some of the longest I've ever gotten but thankfully come with solutions. Its HIGHLY recommended to work through the problems, especially the hard ones to prep for midtermfinal. If you put the time in to the class, you should get a good grade.
Roth is such a nice person. His notes are very easy to follow, especially with all the colour coding he does. He's really enthusiastic and it's hard not feed off that. If you master the assignments, you'll be prepared for the midterm and final.
Class notes are very thorough. You will learn tons about solving ODE's and even some other really cool bonus material. Assignments have nice progression from easy to difficult. This helps you understand concepts in a very fundamental way. Roth is very nice, and is always willing to make time for students and help them learn.
Professor Roth is an amazing and really enthusiastic teacher who really enjoys teaching: you can easily tell! He gives a lot of homework, but only to prepare you for finals. Do them and the finals will almost be a walk in the park... almost. He really wants you to understand and writes with color chalks, that you will learn to love after midterms!
He's a nice caring person, and the tests are literally the same problems as the homework he gives out (which is A LOT) - re-do the problem sets and in class problems before each exam, and you'll get an A.
DONT TAKE! horrible horrible horrible. Doesnt do any examples in class and assignments are really hard... and long.
Roth wants you to understand what you are learning. Will take however long needed in office hours for you to get it. Repeats again in again that the tests are reflections of the assignments he gives. And boy, are there assignments. Do the work and you'll be alright.
Lectures are definitely musts and everything you need to know will be in the lectures. He doesn't use MyCourses at all and barely uses webwork. Most assignments will be a bunch of more challenging problems. The midterm and final will be made entirely of questions from the assignments and in class. He's a great teacher!
Great professor.
Avoid this professor, he literally has extremely hard and lengthy assignments due days before final exams, it is just brutal and will take all your time
Prof. Roth is an incredible teacher. He cares so much about the material and his students. He has a very good feel for which sections of the material need extra attention. Assignments are very long, and sometimes difficult, but they reflect exactly what he expects you to be able to do for the exam. Doesn't use the book, so you *must* go to class.
Great prof, one of my favorites at McGill! Long and hard assignments, making the course not an easy one. However, they prepare you very well for the midterm and final.
Roth thinks that all students should learn the most complicated theorems out of "respect for the mathematics" which works on paper but results in unnecessarily hard lectures and exams.
Roth is a LEGEND!!! He communicates so much enthusiasm for the material, and his lecture notes top any textbook so they're all you need. Assignments are by far the longest and most challenging of any class I've ever taken, but beauty is all exam qs are taken from assignments (which he posts solutions for) and in-class problems. MUST GO TO CLASS!!
Had office hours every single day; always took time to answer every question you had. Obviously cares very much for his students. So sweet!
The man is an atomic bomb: caring and dedicated, but avoid if not motivated.
Roth is such a babe. He's an absolute love. I can't do maths and I enjoy this class tbh. 10/10 would adopt him. He loves maths but also he loves you and wants you to do well.
A flawless teacher with broad knowledge background and great sense of humour.
Really passionate about the material he's teaching and tries hard to make the students appreciate it as well. Very clear and well-organized during lectures, makes little to no mistakes and has beautiful handwriting. Lots of lengthy assignments but they're pretty much all you need to prepare for both the midterm and the final.
Super nice guy & clearly cares about his students. Horrible teacher to get though he teaches this class as if we're math majors so the language he uses and his methods of explaining go right over your head. Purposely excludes stuff from the course pack so you can't miss class. Midterms are easy but the finals are super long and hard. Hardest class
He's an absolute sweetheart and cares about students. Exams, although long, are fair and he covers all the material that goes into them. You have to be quick, but if you use your brain and have done the homework, the exams are not difficult. And he communicates enthusiasm about the subject: if anybody will make you love math, he will.
Prof. Roth is a legend. You will alternate between love and hatred with extremes you never thought possible. I loved him so much I took BVP a second time... If there's anything you'll remember about McGill 30 years later, it's Roth and his coloured chalk. I will weep when he dies.
CR is a kind gentleman who indisputably has a passion for mathematics, he's a pleasant person to talk to and he devotes a lot of time to his class. That said, he is a bad professor. His writing is extremely messy, his grading criteria is not well defined, makes several errors in his corrections -midterm was off by 10 pts- & solutions are unclear.
Absolute gem. Clearly cares about his students. Is subtly funny in class if you've had your coffee. The exams are pulled straight from the assignments, but are still pretty tough. Lectures will leave you asking "yeah, but so what?" for most things, so piecing all the content together is up to you. Buy and read the textbook and you'll be golden.
Professor Roth doesn't use myCourses nor does he have any recordings or notes. That fact coupled with his fast pace means its instrumental you show up. He will not spoon-feed you, you need to put in the effort or you will not do well. With that in mind, it's a very rewarding course with an inspirational teacher. MATH 150 is Calculus on steroids.
My colleagues and I compared his grading and he literally grades you based on how much he likes you. He tries to cultivate a little club of students to up his ego as he has a major inferiority complex (I would too if I was a tenured prof with 2 publications total and do zero research). His teaching of math is shallow, if you're into that.
Hard class, but if you do the assignments and try to understand the BVPs you can get a good grade. The first part of the course is confusing, but all the theory will be useful for the second part on PDEs.
Professor Roth has a deceiving reputation of being a very nice prof. While as a person Roth is great the same cannot be said about his ability to teach. He teaches ad calc to math majors using physics, disregarding the fact that many math majors haven't taken enough physics to understand anything that is being taught. Very set in his ways. 1/10.
Gives a lot of physical insights to advance calculus, which may or may not be preferred depending on the person. This is hard to avoid as it's the major's version typically meaning it it more applied than the honours ad calc class. Personally, I found it extremely rewarding if you devote time to the class.
Yes, his finals and midterms are pulled straight from the assignments, but once the course ends most people don't actually know how to do ad calc, they've just memorized all the solutions to questions. He's a terrible teacher, makes dozens of mistakes in his lectures many of which he does not correct. You're better or taking this class with Drury.
Professor Roth is a gem. He is funny and loves to teach math. Though he moves very quickly in his lectures, he is very patient and helpful in his office hours. Test questions are almost %100 from the homework or lectures. Make sure to take a class with this man before he retires!
I took Roth for both Math 314 and 315. He's a genuinely kind man who really cares for his students and will go an extra mile to explain a concept for you. Luckily for lazier students, Roth is known to be VERY fair with his exams. EVERYTHING is from his notes or his assignments. Rote memorization is 100% a legitimate strategy to get a good grade.
Awesome teacher! He puts a lot of work into his lectures. His midterms and exams are of similar difficulty to the assignments he assigns. Overall, my favourite teacher at McGill by far.
All of his tests/midterms are based on what was seen in class, so make sure you go to his lectures. He's a great prof who loves what he does and makes sure his students are following, go to his office hourshe has a bunch! He has a bunch of fun facts and likes to crack jokes on the sly. Highly recommend!
One of my favorite professors ever! Exams are based on assignments and lectures, so make sure you go through it and ready to have a good grade! Lectures he gives are well structured and he always makes sure people are following. He loves what he do and really passionate about giving lectures and helping students during office hour!
He uses the shorthand notation "anal." for "analytic" when describing a function, and it's hard for me not to laugh. He can also be funny intentionally when telling one of those cheesy math jokes. He got style for sure
Avoid him at all cost. He uses very complicated notations, he is making the course even more difficult than what it is by adding physics to it. Endless assignments Overall, he is a nice guy but not a good teacher with a very bad handwriting
Amazing professor. He absolutely loves math and cares about his students. He has plenty of office hours. His assignments weren't graded, but he almost exclusively uses them in midterms/finals. He doesn't post notes online, so you have to go to class. We had to do a couple extra classes as he had health problems during the semester.
Very hard class. I felt like Professor Roth made it even more hard. He uses difficult notations that most of us dont understand. His handwriting is hard to read and he gives very long assignments that are not graded. If you take this course with him, expect to be doing half physics half maths, which should absolutely not be the case...
CR is very passionate for maths without any doubt. What I doubt sincerely is his capability to teach and to understand his students. I took him with Math262, this course was very hard, I literally had to understand everything by myself as Roth was very bad at explaining. Honestly, do not take this class with him
First 1-2 weeks of lectures are the hardest part, but when you get used to notations that he use it'll get better, Definitely attend the class, I recommend you to study and review the topics after each class, courses that he teaches are not easy so you have to work for it, but exams are all from assignments and questions that he solve in class .
The only way to get an A is to memorize everything from notes and assignments. Avoid if possible.
bad hand-writinghard to understand
lectures move very quickly, do not expect breathing room
The material itself looks okay but the exams were taken from "not graded assignments" that were impossible to solve and involved a lot of physics. Half of the midterm was based on the preliminary notes that don't have anything to do with the material found in the book. Webwork helped me understand the course but nothing like it in exams. Avoid him.
This was my favourite class in the department of math at McGill! It was honestly so helpful and many of the concepts have come up again in my physics courses. I liked how the assignments weren't graded, which gave me more flexibility, and the midterms were very fair . The professor really wants his students to understand and enjoy the material :)
The legend of mathematics never stops!
Roth is the nicest prof I've ever met in university. Do the assignments and go to his lectures and u will get a good grade.
Prof Roth is so so so caring! He actually listens to students, takes their advice, and is willing to change based on their needs. Handwriting may be hard to understand at first, but after several lectures you would appreciate how colorful the lecture notes are! Very clear notes and representative examples if you put effort to read through them.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! He doesn't care about his students! All the lessons are rushed!
I don't understand why people like him. THOSE ARE LIES!!
His classes are not enjoyable at all. I feel like it's a complete waste of time
If you do his assignments and review his lecture note well, you will for sure receive good grades. He is very responsible, he cares about his students. Those who sais his exams are hard are those who did not pay attention to his assignment at all. He is passionate about teaching.
I cannot understand those AWESOME comments. I literally put my life on this course but its a total disaster. Many people around me feels the same. Though examS. I only hope I can pass thank you Roth
Roth is a very kind prof, his lectures are very clear and his way of teaching is very good when you get used to it. For math 314, I advice you to do the assignments regularly, even though they are not graded, so that you are prepared for the exams (which are a mix of assignment questions and examples seen in class). Overall, Roth is a great prof.
Professor is passionate regarding the content of Math 314. He provides clear examples in lectures and assignments on materials that will appear on exams. So diligently study both, and there is no reason you should not be satisfied with your mark. Additionally, Professor is an excellent lecturer and the course has great applications to Physics.
This prof. legitimately tries his absolute best to give students a hard time. Lectures are very intense and heavy. You don't get the chance to digest the information before he moves on to the next idea. Avoid if you can. It's just a painful experience.
Never found it borning! This course makes me one step closer to engineering! Thank you!
Horrible lectures that are impossible to understand as he mostly writes badly without explaining. Revising assignments helps a lot. With him, its more memorisation than maths unfortunately. Its irrelevant to say that he says some inspirational stuff when the teaching is poor!!
He gives so much homework and just copies stuff from the textbook to the board without any explanation. Never recommend
He's not very organized in general. His handwriting and colored chalks are sometimes misleading. His "S" looks like "N," his "N" looks like "M," and his "a" looks like "Q." Just imagine an equation full of s, n, and m. I see that he want to use the colored chalks helping us understand the connection, but it works the other way.
I did many example questions and understood them. When it comes to final, it's a total disaster, I don't understand. I felt bad when I did a question wrong on exam, it just goes worse when I went to his office hour.
It's hit or miss with Roth. Some students love him, just by his "congeniality." But kindness doesn't help when you are terrible at teaching. He's also very disorganised, leaving empty bags of chips on the floor, couch, and desk in his office. Students' exam booklets (confidential) covering the workspace. Very disorganised for a professor.
the worst prof ever, the course is not too bad but the teaching is. I can't read any of his writing. the exam is hard and time limited.
The midterm was brutal. During online school he would write on a board and it would be impossible to read. The final was also really hard and counted for 52% of the grade.
Cannot teach. Thinks using different colors makes him a good teacher.
A joke
When I took Math 150/151 several years ago I enjoyed it. However, I have since learned that Roth systematically harassed other students, especially women. He picks a group of favourites and is kind to them (I was in that group), and he tells anyone who doesn't stroke his ego that they aren't good enough, violates academic privacy, etc.
If you enjoy: teaching yourself all the material; going to lectures that cover stuff that is poorly explained, sometimes not in the syllabus/textbook, and sometimes not even 1st year material (good luck reviewing it); and stressing about whether that bit of 4th year math that was "taught" once will be on your exams, then Roth is for you. Have fun.
I would avoid him at all costs - especially considering the other professors teaching this class are excellent. He is lazy, literally at one point saying he wouldn't correct assignments because this is only a "part-time job". To give you all an idea of how terrible this man is at his job 15/75 students bothered showing up to lectures. Good luck
Literally the worst prof Ive ever had. Guy could not care less about the students as he scribbles out notes and reads his lectures from the textbook. Literally puts in the smallest effort required then complains when there's only 6 students in his lectures. If his writing wasn't illegible already, he uses a 320p webcam to show them in class.
Just awful. If he really cared about the futures of his students he'd quit his job as a prof. For reference of how terrible he is at teaching, by the end of the semester there were literally less than 10ppl attending lectures, while tutorials had 45+. After literally contributing nothing to our learning he gave us the longest and hardest exam ever.
Literally the worst prof you could take, avoid him at all costs. Even if you pass youll have learnt nothing. Genuinely a terrible prof.
it is unbelievable how little time he spends on slides which students are supposed to write. It is physically impossible to take notes, he literally spends less than 5 mins per slide. His teaching style feels more suited to review material than to actually see it for the first time. Avoid if possible
Honestly professor Roth is simply amazing. Don't get thrown off by the other "awful" rates you see here. Obviously you have to "teach yourself" some stuff and do lots of practice but that's how it is for every class. He is so kind, funny, and simply a genius! His lecture are heavy but if you pay attention and don't slack you'll be fine.
So fast that student can't understand. Poor notes!
this prof has no remorse for his students. he is very egocentric and admits no wrong in himself. if tests grades are low, don't expect it to be curved and he prioritizes his own comfort over the students well-being. prepare yourself to simultaneously have to self teach everything but also have to attend his lectures where he talks in mock10 speed.
Terrible experience. Professor doesn't know how to use technology and his lectures are unwatchable with single digit attendance. Exams test memory more than calculus and you only do well if you remember every trick for each problem.
144 p lectures through the entire semester , never wrote a single thing in his lectures, flipped a notebook instead that took maybe 1/6 of the camera with unreadable notes. Exercise solutions are disgusting /insulting for how poorly they are written. No formula sheet or any formula given, you will need to learn everything by heart for every exam.
Roth's disconnect with technology and conceited personality rewards him to be one of the worst profs I have ever taken. Says that if he were given a chance to reteach the course, he wouldn't change a single thing, yet was dissapointed when the midterm average was in the 40s. His online lectures consists of him rambling for an hour and a half.
Really bad, makes the exams a difficulty that is impossible to complete unless you dedicate your entire life to the course material and memorizing formulas.
This guy is a real gem. His exams are tough, especially the final exam, however, he is VERY!!!! generous with the grades. You will struggle in this class, however, it is expected of any class at this level, it is not the Prof's fault, it is just the nature of the material. If you work hard in this course, I guarantee your efforts will be rewarded.
Unfortunately, this class emphasizes much more on memorization over anything else. As long as you remember the material you're responsible for (including the course pack pages and the non-graded assignments) this class will not be too much of a burden.
Charles Roth is a kind man but his lectures make no sense. He teaches everything like it is review, and he does so in marker on a flip chart in his living room that is illegible at least 40% of the time bc of the camera quality. Even when he taught concepts that I already knew, I was confused. Luckily, his exams strongly resemble lecture content.
No point in attending the lectures, just read the textbook and do the assignments. Online teaching consists of sticking a notepad with pre-written proofs in front of a low-res camera and reading things with no context. Final was 85% of the grade. Exams are extremely difficult but Im pretty sure he mega-curves the final so most people pass.
Someone here said that he is egocentric: if Roth was actually egocentric he wouldn't ask you every time you email him "how are you finding the course?" Memorization is unfortunately a big part of 271. Regardless, he does teach the material and was pretty generous with grades for fall 2021; he's also extremely nice and willing to help students.
Avoid prof Roth at all costs youre literally better off teaching yourself math262 with khan academy; thats what I did. He doesnt answer questions in any meaningful way, his slides are illegible, and he is unreceptive to any and all criticism. He spent a solid chunk of our into lecture debating all of his previous negative feedback. Save yourself
He even follows the syllabus to give the lectures.
He even didn't follow the syllabus to give the lectures.
Very caring prof but assumes we already know large portions of the course material. Having the exams resemble assignments seems like a breeze, but it is not.
Not able to teach on line
Would often get annoyed at students asking questions, and cannot communicate well. He can only explain things one way (which is often very unclear).
He cannot teach.
Watch Professor Leonard's lectures on YouTube for Math262 (Calculus 3). He has full-length videos covering everything about Math262. If you try to follow Roth's lectures, you will simply waste your entire time. Roth is too old and simply not fit to teach.
I feel bad for giving Prof Roth a bad rating because he genuinely seems quite nice, but his lectures are impossible to follow. I honestly tried to regularly attend his lectures (which had very low attedence) but it felt meaningless. The vast majority of the understanding I have of the course material was from professor Leonard's lectures on yt.
This class is a train wreck. I had to take a medical leave midway through last semester so this was my 2nd time seeing the material. I did way better last semester when I was constantly on the brink of being hospitalized. That really demonstrates how poorly taught and unnecessarily hard this course is with Roth. Take this class with any other prof
Roth is a timeless classic. A lot of students don't like him for many reasons, but the man has a decades-long career with countless awards for a reason. He knows what he's doing, if you pay attention in class, ask questions, and do the work (a lot of it)...you will come out with the grade you want. Trust the process.
Although somewhat onerous to understand the material, even more so online, studying his lecture notes and doing the assignments is the key in this course. Don't underestimate this course, it's extremely hard to catch up once you've fallen behind even a bit.
He taught in front of a board with a terrible camera in his living room. Couldn't read his notes, couldn't hear him/understand what he was saying. We weren't sure if he was teaching, or doing review, or what was happening. I had a breakdown halfway through the second class and then dropped the course.
I think professor Roth deserves more dignity than this. It's true his lectures are heavy & hard to follow. However, he truly in his heart wants everyone to learn & succeed. He's been indulgent in his grading & gave a lot of bonus points even. As a person, he's like a grandpa. Please be easy with the negative insults, he's a human just like us.
Just don't. That's my only advice. I took math 150 and 151 and due to online lectures, the quality was awful. He wouldn't post pictures of the notes and would just read through his pre-written notes on paper. We emailed him several times for notes but he would say that we had the lectures, when we couldn't see anything. Not worth it.
He doesn't know how to talk. When he talks you won't understand anything. He doesn't know how to write either. His notes are unreadable and disorganized. He constantly brags about his teaching award he won thirty years ago; during his lectures as well as office hours. Paying international tuition for this professor is my greatest regret at McGill.
Don't pay international tuition for this prof. Not worth even a single dollar.
Charles Roth told us at the beginning of the semester that his ODE teacher taught him how to not teach the class, I can confidently say that he also passed on that knowledge. Horrible method of teaching, often goes on a tangent that has no meaning to the class, extremely rude and full of himeself, avoid at all cost
Does not explain any concepts well and mainly blindly writes does his notes (which are listed online anyway) on the board.
This prof is amazing. Made 262 look like a bird course. His midterm and final were a copy and paste of his lecture note problems. Honestly don't know if he is a good teacher, I did not attend any lectures or look at any recordings. My only advice is don't open the book. Stay on his lecture notes and you will have an easy A ;)
I think the professor is good,at least the lecture is well designed and interesting. The webwork which counts for the grade is extremely light weight, instead, the written assignment is much more important and well mapped to the exam. The professor's writing is not that clear, but we have the notes so it's not a big problem anyway.
Professor Roth is the nicest, most caring guy you'll ever meet, and he's clearly so passionate about calculus. However, I had a hard time understanding his lectures as there was little explanation, and he moved through the material very quickly. Wasn't the right class for me, but don't give up on it if you're interested, as lots of kids did great.
Such an inspirational professor , expressed his interest in multiple mathematical concepts that made us interested! Difficult course and you need to study in advance for the lecture , however , generous grading in difficult exams !
Very clear lecturer, sometimes has trouble answering questions in class though. Well organized, exam questions are super similar to the assignments and practice problems covered in class so make sure to review those. Also gives a lot of part marks on exams so never leave questions fully blank. Overall great prof.
Avoid taking a class with Roth at all costs. He is a nice guy, but cannot teach. I taught myself calc 1, 2, and 3 before taking math 150 and his explanation of limit laws confused me.
I had seen every question on the final exam before, either in class or on the assignments.
Absolutely awful teacher and even worse grader. Based all his tests entirely off of non-mandatory assignments with corrections handwritten by him (he has an awful handwriting). These assignments were well above the level expected from this course.
M8 really needs to retire. Read the textbook and get familiar with the notes/assignment questions and you'll be fine.
Professor Roth's approach to teaching is incredibly dated. It's clear he has a passion for the content and for teaching, but his grading is incredibly hard to understand; lecture notes are poorly organized and hard to follow. Good luck!
Roth is going to cause permanent damage to the psychological well-being of our future engineers and although he might think his PDE thingy is truly amazing they are truly traumatizing...
Lectures are very important, you will find his exams a copy of his lecture and assignments questions, if you review them all you get easy 100. He grade not by the results but the progress, if you get the results wrong he will still give you good marks by your problems solving skills.
Shows enthusiasm for math during lectures. More than willing to help students and get to know them! Great course!
Math with Roth is an adventure. Go to lectures (even if they can be tough to follow) and familiarize yourself with the lecture note problems, as they are extremely similar to what appears on exams. Also do the "optional" assignments, as the problems are again very important.
In the midterm he gave us the same questions as his lecture notes, he doesn't explain well and makes things way more complicated than they actually are. Avoid him at all costs and take the course in summer but DONT take it with him. I warned you.
I took this course remotely in 2021 and it was hilariously bad. He did the lectures on an easel over zoom, and would flip through so fast you couldnt take notes. One time he spent half the lecture standing between the easel and the camera so all you could see was his back. Made it impossible to learn so I just read the textbook
Get ready to learn the course by yourself.
This was definitely my worst experience at Mcgill so far. Avoid him at all costs.
Worst teacher not only professor I have ever dealt with for the reasons provided here, I read the reviews but chose to ignore them and I paid the price.
Roth's class is a bit of a mixed bag - his lectures can be tough to follow, but focus on his notes and you'll likely be fine. Unstuckstudy AI was a real lifesaver for exam prep when the material got tricky.
very kind, caring and wholesome, if you don't skip class and do the lectures on time you'll be fine, hard exams but nice grader. super nice guy.
The harder you work, the luckier you get
(mostly)sweet old guy passionate about math. 75-100% of his exams are word-for-word questions from assignments/in class. go to class, he usually hints at the problems which will appear. at the beginning he can be hard to learn from, but you just gotta figure out his teaching style, and do the assignments. some days hes cranky, but the guy's like 85
I think it's time for him to retire. His teaching is poor, hand writing is poorer and he still has not dropped our final grades. Only curves the average to make the class average seem good rather than students who did poorly on the exam. Overall poor experience and if you see the name, drop the course
Nothing else to say but AVOID HIM!!!!!
Horrible teaching, I learned more from TAs during tutorials than during class. His handwriting is illegible and he speaks at barely a whisper during lectures. For exams he expected us to memorize every single equation mentioned during said lectures. I had a horrible time, if you see him drop him
At this point I don't know if this is a math course or a physics course. This guy uses examples to feed his own interest, instead of making sure that we understand everything he's talking about. I got a terrible grade on the midterm, worst thing it was a copy-paste of his lecture notes. This isn't math, this is learning by heart and spitting out.
Most difficult prof I have had at McGill, the material for this course was already challenging but his age prevents him from teaching the material in a engaging way, often loosing track of what he's saying or not finishing a problem in class all together. Almost all of my learning was done outside of class and from his optional assignments.
He is an excellent person outside of class and is always reachable, but regretfully his lectures made no sense to anybody and left me more confused each lecture. The tests should be easy since they're from the lectures but he took off every point he possibly could and almost everyone failed his exams. Great guy!! But not great class :(
BEWARE 99% of these 5 star reviews are OBVIOUSLY Roth inflating his own ratings. Dont be fooled by the average rating. This guy sucks. He made 262 WAY harder than it needed to be, at least compared to peers with other profs. Avoid him at all costs. Thank God he's retiring.
Roth is clearly passionate about mathematics and loves to teach. That being said he is so old that his lectures are really tough to follow, as he doesn't speak loud enough, rambles and sometimes loses his train of thought.
