Do not take him under any circumstences! It's all about scient. notations and symbols. He is very hard.
He knows what he is teaching and is very intelligent, however when it comes to explaining the material to his students he fails miserably. He attempts to answer your questions, but instead of simplifying things he tends to confuse you even further.
well, if you know how to read the book and do basic algebra its ok but if you're taking this class for first time, DO NOT take him, not a terrible teacher but far from the best, pretty funny though when he gets all excited
He's the worst math teacher I've ever had. He's really boring and doesnt explain anything to his students. His lectures and the book are two different things.
He's a smart guy with his own formula's that only he can understand, i dont recomend him as a teacher
One of the better math teachers that I've ever had, but not for everyone. He goes about teaching somewhat different, he presents the topics in his own way, not always following the book. However many don't follow because he talks and writes in math.
WORST TEACHER EVER!!! So confusing.
Well, Jonson is certainly a character. He is one of those "old school" math teachers who may seem confusing only because they go into more detail. If you're not a Math or Science major, avoid him. Otherwise, he'll be your best friend.
this guy is ridicules...he confuses u...he explains proofs instead of doing problems
I passed his class purely because of the cheat sheets we were allowed to use. If he had not let us use them, I would probably have failed
avoid him at all cost, let me repeat, avoid him at all cost. Johnson is stupid infact he is really smart teacher but he is teaching at wrong level. He should be teaching much higher math which only math major take as he is giving you prof of everything
I think this guy has been teaching math for so long that he's forgotten what its like to be a student. He does a terrible job creating an understanding for the students, gives very few examples and goes very fast.He uses scripts that differ from the book, which makes the homework impossible.
He looks like Mr. Burns!!!!!!!!!
Worst Teacher EVER!! He just confuses me so much and when I would ask a question he would just confuse me so much more. He talks so fast and he always looks down instead of looking at the class. He is the worst at teaching, but he is a nice person.
He is a very diff. teacher. If you dont have a broad knowledge of math and you dont speak mathematically stay away from him.
I dropped it because he was completely insane. I'm good in math and I had no idea what he was doing.
He is difficult because his notes do not match the textbook. His class is easy because his tests are based on his notes. He assignes homework from bad handwritten worksheets not the text book. Example of a class note. The book defines the derivative of a function with limits, Johnson uses matrices.
If you are not a math maj and/or are not proficient in eng, DONT TAKE HIM, ESPECIALLY IN WIN/SUM. You'll die. I came to 125 w/ an A and a solid undrstdng of 115, and he has done away w/ the lot of it. I have to study SO much on the side to keep up with his lack of ability to make the material clear
Before you take his class, you have to understand that Professor Johnson is going to teach the class similar to a graduate class. If you are adept at logic, and enjoy math you will LOVE his class. He is the best math teacher i've ever had, and i wish i could take all my math from him.
WORST TEACHER IVE EVER HAD... CANNOT TEACH AT ALL... AVOID HIM AND IM DEAD SERIOUS OR ELSE U'LL BE LOST!
Johnson is the most detailed teacher I've ever had. He doesn't just answer a question, he makes you think and tries to get you to understand. He won't move on until you get it better than you did before. He's hard, but if you're willing to work hard and learn, you'll do fine.
I suck at math and hated/dropped his class. BUT if you excel at math and enjoy it and plan to go into a career that involves a crapload of math, take him. Otherwise, stay away. Far far away. He knows his stuff and absolutely loves math. His class is hard and made my brain collapse on itself.
omg he is one boring weird teacher he cant explain the problems good i wish i never took him but hes okay i just hope he passes me
Terrible teacher, goes at a fast pace and speaks a foreign language, unless you love math DO Not take him
his lecture is too different from textbook. but if you follow his lecture, then test will not be hard. Final test was combination of all the previous tests.
very boring, goes either into too much detail u get confused or not enough. teaching isn't clear and always has chalk at the tip of his nose. NICE GUY BUT TERRIBLE TEACHER. i bearly got a d
He is too theoretical.
He explains too much theory, which is good, but such theory must have a foundation, a principle. You cannot jump into contrapositives without having reviewed, and what does it matters this anyways, we are in college not in a university and my major is not math: Just show me how to add one half plust one third.
Mr. J is an amazing instructor (if you love math). He's very passionate about what he does and speaks with incredible clarity. Don't expect an easy "A", not gonna happen. If you wanna learn tremendous mathmatical details, take him. If your not "in love" with math, then don't bother. He's hard but fair.
Mr. Johnson is not easy. He might lose you at first because he goes into great depth and detail. He will challenge you and make you think. He wants you to understand the concepts and not just do the problems. He will stay after if you need help and is very lenient with partial credit. If you need to go on to Calc 2 or higher he is well worth it.
Prof Johnson's class is definitely not for everyone. The reviews below are an accurate description of his class. I would highly recommend this class to those who feel they're up for a challenge, are prepared to work hard, and want to REALLY understand math. Don't be intimidated at the beginning, stick around for a bit, he'll try his best to help
This man should be teaching at Harvard, teaches math on a completely different level. Stay away if your major is not math, he teaches at a very high level. Speaks a foreign language really.
If you have bad vocabulary skills you will be lost. Doesn't really explain clearly, and only gives 1 or 2 examples when teaching a new topic.
Mr Johnson is a well knowledgable instructor he is very pleasant and is very patient with the questions you may have pertaining to the course material BUT he teaches math on an advanced level. He moves very quickly and has difficult tests. Only take this class if you have plenty of extra time and help to pass otherwise it'll be a long semester
MR. JOHNSON WAS VERY HARD TO UNDERSTAND I PUT A LOT OF HOURS STUDYING OUTSIDE THE CLASS. BUT HE SAW THAT AND I PASSED THE CLASS HE WANTS TO SEE YOU BEING INTERESTED IN HIS CLASS AND HE WILL PASS YOU. BUT HE IS HARD!
you have to take a simbolic logic class before taking calculus 1 ..there must be an agreement between the math department and him about his teaching method.
a bore...
This guy is all pro. Probably best if you are a math major - he has a lot to offer. But he makes himself available for anyone who needs one-on-one help and is always reminding students to see him if they're stuck in the class.
trust me if u love math Johnson will be the best teacher for you, but if u don't he'll seem boring and difficult to understand
A very good and helful professor. He uses a lot of notation, so on the first day you'll be scared. Quizzes are fairly easy. Take the notes. He always has one simple proof question from the notes. And do your homework!! If you are from high school and have already taken AP CALC, this professor is very easy!
This class is so boring, especially if you take it in the morning. If you know a better teacher take him. He's not that bad, if you really like math.
he is nice teacher but his explanation are very hard to follow and most of the time its hard to understand what is he talking about. expect to study a lot outside the class. his tests are hard but his final is simple if you studied through out the semester. i got an and its probably the hardest one so far.
Pre-Calc,VERY TOUGH,There were proofs as well.Luckily, he lets a 3by 5 card front and back on tests.I studied alot and put all my time into his class and i got an A,but it was the hardest A EVER.You have to push yourself and be dedicated for this A.He will lose you when hes explaining things, but luckily theres the examples in the book to look at.
He's quite a character! He appeals to the more technical majors(math, physics, chemistry, engineering, computer science). Mainly for the math major. He uses lots of notation, which is seldom used by most professors. Teaches mathematics at a very formal level. You will never overlook an Introductory calculus concept, everything is precise and in-depth.
this teacher makes math hard than what it really is,he explains like a nerd,he uses symbols instead of words! but what can you expect from a guy who tugs in his shirt combs his hair to the side and carries a briefcase, overall this teacher sucks so DON'T TAKE HIM!! but if you're a stright-out geek like him, this is definitely the teacher for you =)
Teaches math like it's supposed to be taught. Why wouldn't you use notation? I wish I had him for every math class I've ever taken in the my academic career. Though, I don't see why he doesn't feel guility teaching at such a high and formal level in a community college (on average, not the brightest folk) - he needs to be lecturing in univerisities
math 125 he made the class very hard for no reason. i loved math, but he did not teach anything. he explains everything in thr hardest way in the world. most of the time the students have no idea what he is talking about. the only thing that is good, is the 50% is a "C", but his tests are hard. take him if you want to read the book for understandin
holy crap, i took this math class in the winter08,first day was alot,hw load was so much!i woke up 6 am everday and had class at 8am to 12pm, got home and did hw till late, the class mademe so stressed i hadbreathing problems. He has alot of theorems & proofs! Hardest earned A ever and im still a 4.0 Student. His worksheets were hard to understand!
bootcamp for calculus is all i can say... he is extremely monotone and his lectures are extremely difficult to understand... once u have a grasp on the subject, he purposely baffles you on the test by giving the toughest and rarest problems. only people that passed the class are middle easterners that took calculus in 5th grade.
Avoid this professor at all cost.During class he used to get lost everybody. The book was actually our teacher. All letters in that class no numbers. If you don't want to get an A in the class, take him otherwise take someone better. However,if you take him and if you survive his tests,he would make the final based on the tests.Got an A b/c of that.
Horrible Horrible Teacher!! He does not explain many example, and when he does he uses symbols and does not go into detail. He teaches as if he is doing the work in his head and does not explain much. Test's are hard because he does not give you any idea on what the test will be like. After the first test half the class dropped
Theres VERY LITTLE great math teachers. After reading other comments, he might actually be ur best choice. PROS: Overall Curve, speaks good english, drops 100 points (thats 2;50 point tests). CONS: Will not wait for no1. (If you dont keep up, ur S.O.L) Tests are on LECT & NOTES not H.W. He only helps when its fast and convenient for him.
Hew is horriable. Do not take him. I studied at least 3 hours a night and still didn't pass. He doesn't give you any numerical examples and isn't very helpful at all. He doesn't seem very helpful and uses all the symbols and doesn't explain them very well.
This man truly knows mathematics, and he does not water down the material. He knows his mathematics insides and outside. Professors like him should be teaching at universities, not community colleges- but what can you do?
Nice enough guy but, what does that matter if you can't understand what he's talking about. I got a 97% in 115 and I am struggling very hard to get a C. His test are nothing from the tests in the book. Half the test is material he's never gone over. He just expects you to teach yourself. Unless you are a math major, DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Don't recommend him to anybody.
He gives two quizzes at first and that helps you get used to his way of testing. If you attend class every day, go over your notes daily, and do the homework youll be fine.If you can take HONORS do it cause youll just have 3 extra projects. His notation ends up being very helpful if you take time to understand it.
I really don't recommend taking any of his classes if you only want to show up for the tests. You have a chance of getting a good grade if you attend class & take notes. He may allow you to use a Flashcard on the test as a "helper". Note: He tends to put examples from his notes on the test! But that requires you to attend class. Good Luck!
i had a 4.0 for 3 semester straight, and after i took his class, it went down to a 3.8 He gives WAY too much homework and quiz. he wont stop for anyone if you don't get the material. Run Run Run!! and for winter and summer session, you better be ready. you have to do all the regular work you do in a regular semester in 4 weeks.
Wayyyyy too hard for a community college course. have to show up on time everyday. brought my GPA down significantly.
very intelligent professor, but doesn't spend time on office hours, his tests are the same as his notes, you can have note card on his exams, drops 2 lowest scores, doesn't check homework
Professor Johnson is one of the nicest teachers at Valley! His tests are based on the material covered at class, and his lectures are very helpful. I got an A in his class without having to read the book! Just know the lecture material and you're good to go as the problems are very much like the ones in the lecture!
This prof is a nice guy, but you'll definetly need some extra help if you wanna pass. I'd suggest a weekly meet with a study group and some time in the math lab. You also need to take good notes, most of the test comes directly from what he writes on the board, but he doesn't really spend much time explaining it, assuming you know the material.
Took him in the winter semester, the class felt rushed. On tests, he is a harsh grader. An A is only possible if you get every single question right. He grades on a curve. But now, months later, I can still remember everything he taught, so he must be doing something right. If you took symbolic logic and did well, you will def. do well in his class
This is a very hard class! He expects you to know the material and his lectures are very hard to comprehend. His tests are extremely hard! Take notes on everything he puts on the board and do not miss a class! I recomend him because he does not grade homework, but doing it really helps. He his a very nice guy though.
Out of 4 professors I've taken for Math125, he was the best. No weird accent, well organized, always smiling, he was never absent, and class was always on time. HW is optional! Gives many helpful handouts! Tests are good and not tricky - even has hints, credit for work shown, no scantrons. Optional notecard on tests & Final! Take him!!
This professor is a nice guy BUT he is really boring and his way of teaching is really bad and weird i had to drop the class before i failed it i would suggest taking him ONLY if he is your only choice if so then good luck!
Lectures are very important. He doesn't collect homework and leaves understanding up to the students. It is important to ask questions in his class, as he'll speed through his lecture as if everyone is on the same level. Overall he's a nice guy but math is his life!
This guy is ridiculous. I will be transferring next year with a 4.0 and I am STRUGGLING with this class. Stay away from this guy at all costs. I've had to spend so much money on additional tutoring because his lectures are so unclear. Please listen to me and stay away from this guy.
his way of thinking is too critical and too literal making it hard for someone learning the subject
hard to understand
Fall 2010, 45 students become 13 before the 4th test. Only a couple of people passed the 4th test. If math is your LIFE, and you already understand Calculus, then math 125 with Johnson is for you. Otherwise, you'd be ill-advised to take his course. I'm an engineering major and ordinarily get straight A's...Johnson's class killed my GPA.
His tone is a little monotonous, BUT he is nice. If you work hard and do your homework all the time, you will do well. Any questions you have, write them on the board before class and if your fellow students can't help you, he always will.
If you want to learn and pass, DO NOT TAKE JOHNSON :( he's super nice, speaks loud enough for you to hear and writes clearly on the board so you can take notes BUT he is so long winded, he never gets to the examples. all he does is proofs :( extremely convoluted method of trying to get the lesson across to his students.
This is the type of professor that is better suited for some type of job in research rather than teaching. He is very knowledgable, but does not realize that all the math jargon he uses causes his students to become lost. Most of his students will not be math majors and are just trying to make it through the class. Johnsos is great for math majors.
I took math 125 and 1 only student got an A from 60 students. of course 10 students remain till end of semestre. His test are based on his lecture notes.
I took math 125 and 1 only student got an A from 60 students. of course 10 students remain till end of semestre. His test are based on his lecture notes.
I took math 125 and 1 only student got an A from 60 students. of course 10 students remain till end of semestre. His test are based on his lecture notes.
I thought I was enrolled in a pre-calculus course. I didnt realize that pre-calculus had changed into an advanced math analysis course where the main focus is proofs and theory. This teacher would be great for advanced higher math...but is horrible at teaching pre-calculus.
Horrible prof. that is not aware that most of his students have not taken symbolic logic! His lectures/notes barely comply with the definitions and symbols used in any standard textbook. Very convoluted way to go about teaching an elementary calculus series! Avoid this tool at all costs!!!
I thought I was really good at math; I guess I was wrong or that is the way this teacher made me feel. He made everything so hard. I got very frustrated!! He seems nice, but his class is a nightmare!
Horrible Class!! It is the only class i have dropped in 2 years... It was really bad!!
accounting major . Enjoyed math up untill I took this class !!
the only math class i ever dropped!
This was the most cofusing teacher/proffessor I have EVER had. He expects you to already know the terminology that he uses. It was all stuff that I had NEVER heard before. I have always hated math but I decided to give it another chance and after taking this class I was even more confused on this subject than ever before. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR!
No comment. Just kidding. Professor Johnson, really does love teaching math.Be prepared to work very hard and study a lot.
Nice guy, but he's monotone and his lectures are unnecessarily complicated, first time I ever learned more from the text than the teacher
probably one of the worst professors at valley. he gives very few examples in class. lessons are all mixed up. test are hand written. very difficult to learn and understand him
Professor Johnson is an excellent teacher but is better suited for higher math. The semester started out with around 40-50 students by the 3rd or 4th test only 10-15 students remain. Tests are based on class notes so make them clear! 2 tests are dropped and make sure to keep two notebooks one for notes and homework. This will pay off at the end
This is what i learned in his class Cs Johnson = doc from back to the future therefore doc from back to te future = Cs Johnson basically how he teaches that example alone means nothing to anyone just repeating converse and inverse of the same stuff. He really sucks as a teacher it's like having plumber teacher a person landscaping basically no help
Great professor, he really knows what he's talking about. If you want to be prepared for higher level mathematics at the university level, take his class. It is difficult at first with his notation but eventually you will cath on. I've taken math 265 and I am enjoying his math 266 class currently.
he solves everything using hard and long way.
Good guy. He teaches math through proofs and inductions on the board. Study from the book and get ahead in order to be prepared for the lectures which can be confusing but also helpful if you know what you are doing and know what you need to clarify. He is open to in class discussions of his proofs, but know what you are talking about. Study Hard!
Study hard. Try to get ahead in the book so you can understand his lectures. He is a good guy, he tests on your knowledge on the material, on everything that he goes over in his lectures. The HW isnt manditory, neither are his lectures but I suggest you don't miss class and get ahead on the HW. His class is not easy but he works with his students.
mr johnson is a nice guy really. teaching just isnt his thing. math is twice as hard with him. avoid if you can.
He is actually a nice guy but his teaching method is something I can never get used to. I pretty much have to rely on the book more, which is ironic considering it's also kinda confusing.
Overall pretty difficult class due to the nature of his lectures. focuses primarily on the theories, which is important. pay close attention to his examples which are key to the tests. Uses unique symbols which can be confusing. study and you will pass.
I don't want to be mean when I rate him, but don't take Johnson's math class. The man has his heart in the right place and truly wants you to pass but that's almost impossible. He makes things over complected when he lectures and his test are the same way. Try to avoid his class I had to drop this class because of how complicated he made things.
If you go to his office hours, he is extremely helpful and makes the content easier to understand then in class. He is a very nice teacher who is extremely knowledgeable. Fast paced lectures so be attentive.
Mr. Johnson is really difficult. He teaches math at a higher university level. He is very tough to pass unless your good with math and really put your 100 percent effort into it but I would avoid taking him. Very difficult.
Johnson is a very complex professor. If you have a hard time understanding math, take another professor. He throws out a couple tests, homework is not mandatory but you better do it to understand the material. He is very intelligent and his lectures than be confusing between a certain IQ range. If you take him and it's hard, go to the math lab.
He's a really cool guy, but wow he makes everything very difficult.
I took Math 125 on the spring semester of 2014 with Professor Johnson. He loves math and he is always willing to help you if you are serious about class. His tests are tough, but if you do your homework and he sees potential of future learning you would not fail his class. If you struggle with the subject don't take it with him. I enjoy his lessons
Dude the symbols alone will confuse the hell out of you in his class. I have taken math 125 which is algebra 2 before and let me tell you it was nowhere near as difficult as Mr. Johnson had made it. Do yourself a favor and try to avoid taking it with him. Good luck if you do. Nice guy though
Prof Johnson is good professor. He confuses you a little with his own notation, but overall is great. Tests aren't too difficult, and he lets you have a note card. Sometimes he gives you practice exams to study, and he drops the lowest test score. He's a very generous grader and gives extra credit take home exam portion. Homework is not mandatory.
Very kind and welcoming but he overcomplicates one of the easiest courses in my opinion. Had to drop the class.
He's a really nice professor but in my opinion overcomplicates simple lectures by explaining too much. Had to use old notes from high school for most of the chapters. A very auditory professor, if you are a visual person like me, this is not the professor for you. A lot of homework is given so if you fall behind then good luck
He is a nice, sweet old man but it was the hardest math class. Serioulsy, I attended each class but still too confusing for me. If your not good at math, this class might not be right for you. I passed with a C only because he gives the opportunity to pass the class if you keep a class and homework journal, even if you fail his tests.
He's an excellent teacher for budding mathematicians but hard to understand for regular students. He's very technical in his teachings. He cares a lot about his students and is willing to answer questions. He sticks to the syllabus so you know what to expect.
He is a good professor for some students. For me, the class was very difficult, not because of the work but because of the way he teaches it. If you are an extremely quick learner this is the class for you. He uses very technical terms so I basically had to teach myself from the book as well as using the tutoring center.
I hadn't taken a math class in 4 years before I enrolled in his class. I had to drop his class because I desperately needed a refresher course. Otherwise, I think I would have caught on. He is willing to meet with anyone after class and gives excellent guidance. Attendance is a must if you want to get good notes. Follows the syllabus exactly as is.
Lectures are him reading his very substantive handouts, like a free book. Being in class tremendously helps you understand it. Do homework for your own sake. You can use old, cheap versions of the book. Tests are held days after the material is covered, and have extra credit, which is great. Grades are curved. He likes people who participate.
It's true that Prof Johnson can be pretty tough, but if you started the calculus pattern of classes you should expect to work hard. He helps in office hours, answers whatever and as many questions as you have in class, and curves the grade big time. At the end you feel you learned and ready for the upcoming courses.
Probably the worst professor at LAVC. He takes the simplest of concepts and makes them impossible to understand, and creates his own symbols for terms in Math that he expects you to memorize after day 1.
Hes OK! I mean its math right? Drops two lowest test scores and is offers extra credit. Must go everyday or will get lost and keep up with Hw
Not a bad guy, but really confusing professor! If you already have a good grasp of the concepts or your good at teaching yourself, then no problem. But if your looking for a teacher that can help you better and easily understand math this is Not your guy.
Believe me or not he is the worst math teacher Ive had, ever . He cant teach you properly , Ill recommend my friends to find another professor .
Awful! I dont believe that he is a math professor. You probably can find another more knowledgeable professor. Dont spend your time on this class, he is really confusing.
I took this class for Fall semester. This professor uses only his notes and cant answer to questions out of notes. He doesnt teach anything. If your major is math, just dont take it with him. This is the worst math professor in Valley College.
Horrible at teaching. He is nice but he really needs to with his problems in a way where the student can understand what he is talking about honestly even if you do get through the class you still lose in the end because you feel like you learned nothing and only learn the problem from his study guide. Not worth it take someone else.
Nice Profb ut is not a good teacher for most majors If you are a Math Major take him but if you arent DONT. His teaching style is geared for math majors which means everything is done in math notation and profs. He over complicates stuff when he lectures and DO NOT take him w/o linear algebra For all his classes he expects you know linear.
This prof is worthless if you arent a math major Expects you to know linear algebra for his class even if it is not required for yours. He teaches all his calc classes using advanced calc which is a upper div class not suppose to be at a jc. Extrememly proof heavy lots of math notation. Prints out his lecture and that is what he writes on the board
He spent so much time covering linear alg topics in the 1st month of calc 3 which doesnt require linear alg, that we ended only spending 1 week on multiple integration and vector calc. We only learned 1/2 the topics of vector calc. Just lectures all day and doesnt like questions. He is only good if you are a math major b/c he only does proofs.
Professor Johnson is not an amazing choice for many students, but if you are a math major, his class will be valuable to you. His lectures consist of him explaining the handouts he gives you, which are in very formal math notation. If you are unfamiliar with this notation, be prepared to learn it. We were quite pressed for time at the end of class.
This Professor has literally made math into something that nobody will ever understand. I took him for Precalc/Trig and he made it impossible. It was so bad I would take his work to the math lab and nobody would be able to help me besides the director, who couldn't even answer the questions. Makes up his own symbols and writes wrong ?'s
Prof Johnson does not like to check emails and he does everything on paper handouts. On the first day of class read the preliminary knowledge sheet he hands out very carefully, he always refers back to it. The textbook is pricy so try to look in lavc trio office prior to buying any textbook for that matter. Prof assigns so much homework.
Prof Johnson puts a huge emphasis on tests and does not check homework or classwork notebooks until the end of the semester so you have nothing to go off if you want to modify your grade to get it better during the semester. If you are a bad test taker, you are done for. This professor is unreachable and has no canvas.
Make sure you take notes, and participate in class, and you'll be fine. He's also open to questions and discussions after class.
