I can't understand a word he says!
He was very rude even on the first day of class. He loves to hear himself talk.
He is the true definition of 'EVIL'. Drop the course before it's too late!!
He isn't all bad. He is extremely knowledgeable about his subject.
I didn't enjoy his class at all! I don't even know how I got a C in his class. I hated the way he watched you go across the room when you left to go to the bathroom. He always critized my papers!
the worst professor of my life for sure

Dr. Scarborough was the only teacher at NOVA who treated his students like adults--if you want a class that's a mere extension from high school, then don't take him. If you want to really learn the material and have much demanded of you, sign up.
Don't take his class if english is not your first language. he can be hard to understand. But he knows what he's talking about. Best advice...Speak up, give you ideas and opinions and NEVER be late to class.
if you come to class on time and talk it's an easy A
Wasn't sure if I liked him or not at first, but decided he was a good teacher and took his 242 as well. If you want to actually LEARN something, take this class. NOT AN EASY A! Gives you points for feedback in class, but you need to defend your opinion.
This man is undoubtedbly a beast! Be ready for ambiguous pop-quizzes, HARD ones. Stalinist teaching style, he's no soup-nazi, he sure is the Eng-Nazi!
I think that the last few comments have been left by the evil-professor himself... how can ANYONE have ANYTHING good to say about this man!?!?!?!
Absolutely horrible.
Ive had a lot of bad teachers in my life but he has to be one of the worse. His class is increadilby boring, all you do is sit and analyze crappy poems that make no sense. He's a dick too and mumbles a lot when he talks. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES!!!!!!
A genius of sorts--no one I've ever taken has been so adept at draining the life out of reading. God, sex, music, art, love, redemption, despair, joy--he has a way of turning them into dry summaries, then pounding the obvious like it's divine insight.
He's quite intelligent, and knows good writing. However, if you actually need help with anything, you're in trouble - I'm doing well because I know how to hack English. Speak up in class. Don't show up late. His accent is difficult to understand.
Worst ever. He had a hick accent and went off on weird tyrants. He is known to lock the doors EXACTLY the minute class is supposed to start. Unclear syllabus. Took off as soon as class was over. WORST EVER.
RUN YOU SORRY IDOTS RUN. This guy is the Hick from hell. Cant understan=d a damn word he says. Is really disrespectful to his students. Has an obsession with rambling on and on and on and on.Run u sorry idiots run
For God's sake, don't ever be late to this claass! He'll rip you in two!
Your ass shouldnt be late to class anyway. He actually TAUGHT his class. Not a highschool teacher, he would expect participation. So long as you showed up and worked, not an impossible class. Well maybe for you lazy ****ers.
a horrible teacher. he is a JERK. and shouldnt be teaching. He is **** and DONT TAKE HIS CLASS. if i had read this before signing up for my classes i wouldnt have taken him
He is very ****... i hate his class and hate him just as much... never responds to emails and you can't understand anything he is saying... PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
terrible! he is an abso lute jerk and provided little or no assistance to the students. i don;t belive a grade should be made up of a midterm, a final, and a paper! it's ridiculous!
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS... HE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD... HELP YOURSELF AND DONT TAKE HIS CLASS.
horrible teacher. do not take this class. i hope he reads this. i hated his class
His class was easy. All you had to do was listen to what he said and speak up in class. I rarely did the reading but got an A by listening to what he said.
This man has a southern accent and his hard to follow and if ur a minute late u might as well take ur ass back home,bc he makes a big deal of it. He's a GRUMPY old man there's olny reading hw and then short writings about the reading in class.
I hate him,he is evil, you cant underestand a word he says, he just mumbles, he loves to humiliate his students, he jump from a topic to another, DON'T EVER TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
dude tells the class if you don't have your book, you might as well leave on the first day of class. He tripps about being late yes, but if you do the work and put the effort into saying something, he'll be lenient on the grades. Hey I got an A. I think he's all right- just tune out that accent!
he's an ok teacher. If you put the effort into the work, then you'll do fine. Its hard to understand his accent though. Speak up in class. It is the only way you get the participation points. A boring class is the last thing you'll need, becasue then he talk all the more. You don't want that!
he is an ****, he tells u dont withdraw the class cause he will help u, but he is a lyer, he wont even respond to his email, he never has time for you he is A big ol'**** jerk, he never has a freaking time to help neither listen to ur questions...
DONT BE LATE, u dont do anythin in class expect discuss, but very unhappy person and u cant even uderstand wat he's sayin half the time.
He's pretty intimidating in class - extremely picky about tardiness, a bit hard to understand, and quizzes are hard. However, when you approach him one on one, he's a real gentlemen and is very encouraging. You just have to let him know you're trying.
Around 2/3 of the students dropped out of his class. 6 stayed untill the final of which I belive 3 failed, 1 got C or B and 2 got B or A. If it was calculus 173/174 I would not mind but all 4 year degrees require English 112 so this class should not be this hard. And yes he is unclear. He should giv
If you have a problem with authority don't take the class. He is a freak about being late and absences. But at the same time you need to be in class to pass it. REAL EASY. Just speak up every now and again you'll be fine. hard to understand what the hell he says. just nod and smile.
He is hard. No doubt. But he doesn't purposely want to fail you. If you do bad on the quizzes but speak up in class, it all balances out. I've had his class for ENG112 and ENG242 and I like it! Very challenging, but a LOT of reading.
started out with 25 people in the class-only 10 present to take the final. he spoke with 3 or 4 students throughout the entire class and although he encouraged people to speak up, he would disagree and not respect your opinion. very strict about being on time and will cause a scene if you do come in late. don't take him.
Worst english teacher I have ever had. Narrow minded, if you don't agree with him you are wrong and will stop discussion mid sentence if you disagree. Half the kids dropped by midterm, I should have followed suit.
By far, worst teacher ever! Not a people person. Not helpful. His tests are very hard (essay type tests). If you are ever late to class (like for 5 minutes), he will make a scene about it. Sometimes, he'll shut the door and will not let you in.
He is very unhelpful, you can hardly understand him when he talks. You can't even be a minute late, he'll either not let you in to class or make a big deal of it. His test are ok, but when it comes time to grading he is very unfair.
This teacher is a NO NO!!! you are screwed for life to get into his class.
He is a good teacher, Just talk in his lectures, but he gives way way to much work. Not an easy teacher.
This guy is good for a laugh, but NOT for a grade.
RUN AWAY FROM HIM!!!!
His heavy southern accent made it hard for me to understand all his crap.
Speak so fast no it is hardly to understand
Hard to understand. His workload is huge. Stay away from this guy unless you have to take him cause you enrolled late and are forced to. haha. even then i wouldnt.
Prof. Scaraborough is a bully, always right, and clearly enjoys having power over others. He will say whatever he wants without regard to others' feelings or if he has crossed the line. His tangents are frequent and confusing. His grading system is tainted and unfair.AVOID THIS MAN.DO NOT TAKE HIM. THERE IS ALWAYS ANOTHER SEMESTER.SPARE YOUR GPA.
This guy is hard. We started with 30 people and were down to 8 after week 2. However, I loved the guy. His views are great and those of us that stuck around grew to like his style. Take him only if you are willing to work hard.
hard teacher. should've dropped the class like the other 20 students who did. hard to understand. only talks to a couple students as mentioned in a previous review. don't take him. he is a waste of money and time
I REALIZED I WANTED TO DROP HIS CLASS THE MOMENT HE STARTED SPEAKING, HE DID NOT SOUND NICE, AND HE HAS A SARCASTIC ATTITUDE. NOT UNDERSTANDABLE, DONT TAKE HIS CLASS, OR DROP OUT IF UR IN IT
He is hard to understand, but his accents funny to hear and he does gives a lot of reading. But the main thing he cares about is participation in class..even if you don't pass all the quizzes. The tests are kind of fun to do b/c they're your own make on the stories. There's only one paper and that's a compare/contrast one. He's pretty cool.
TERRIBLE!
Every lecture was insightful, his points were challenging but engaging, and his grading tough but always fair. My writing definitely improved and this class has been invaluable to me. Many expect to breeze through it and are angry when they find they cannot, but if you work hard, you can gain a lot from it. Highly recommended for serious students.
First of all, he is very hard to understand because of his accent. He is from Richmond but they way he talks is just weird. You better have good memorization skills on poems, because he doesn't quiz you on if you know the plot or meaning, only what words and quotes you can remember. Part of your grade is class participation. If you dont underst
If you're smart and pay attention, you'll do fine. If you're lazy or stupid, he will eat you alive! He's a professor for motivated students; definitely not for those more interested in partying or playing around.
This guy is really tough but he really knos his stuff. If you do your reading and keep up with the assignments he will help you get a good grade.
The class being hard I can understand, what I couldnt stand was his incessant bullying of the students. He actually called someone stupid in my class. Asks your opinion just to disagree. Routinely goes off on a tangent. Insensitive and cruel. 15 began and only 3 were left. That says something. Cant even write a decent syllabus.
NOT GOOD! Babbles a lot about nothing, but, you must pay attention to him since in between the babble he tells you your assignments. Very vague, no clear instructions. HATES CELL PHONES! Wants class participation but argues your opinion on how you're wrong. A full class of 35 dwindled down to 12 by the end! Not worth your energy, don't bother!
if you want a professor who is blinded by his own opinions, take this guy!
this guy is very insecure. makes no eye contact. strikes down students for the most negligable of offences. if you throw away trash in class he will flip out and yell at you. serious self esteem issues. never tells you what to study or what will be on the test. find another teacher. 241 is not prerequisit for 242! take 242 if you can
One of my lit classes got dropped so i had to transfer classes, I walk into his class on the second and go up to him to ask for a sylabus and he immediatley snaps at me saying "No you cant take the quiz you missed it" Not only did I not know what he was talking about he acted like a real **** too. Severe superiority complex.
First, I need to label his cons: He's STRICT, BORING when discussing things, has a THICK ACCENT and is HARSH on tardy or lazy people. If you hate any of these, AVOID HIM. Now, if you can get through his accent (most do after a week) and are a good student who isn't afraid to get help, you can easily get a decent grade. I did, and it was easy. Rec'd
This teacher is terrible. I ask a student in class what page we are on and the teacher yells at me. avoid at all costs
if you are able to get past his strange/irritating accent, he is SO hard to understand most of the time. the problem with him is that he mumbles so much and goes off topic. he's not clear at all with his instructions half the time, he ****es you out for being 2 minutes late, and if your phone goes off in class...prepare to die. do not take him!!
Mood swings very quickly.
This man is an excellent professor, and he knows his stuff. Know that before you get into the class that you are not going to get any handouts, and you are going to have to put a lot of effort into what you do. Just make sure you do the reading and contribute to the discussions, and you will benefit a lot from this class.
Thorough understanding in what he is teaching, concise lectures.
avoid at all costs! he mumbles too much, is hard to understand, and his instructions are absolutely useless. He goes off topic a lot, and explains what he expects in between his stupid stories, and is just of absolute no help. on top of everything, he is mean! don't even bother showing up late to class, even one minute.
I had a great time in his class. As long as you read the literature, you'll be fine. What makes this class interesting is the discussions about what we've read. If you want to just sit there and not participate, then find another professor. A lot of your grade comes from participation, not from quizzes.
He is a horrible English teacher. His handwriting is unreadable, his thick southern accent makes him very hard to understand. Ridiculously uneven grader that withholds assignments until the withdraw deadline in order to keep students in the course. He picks favorites and fails the rest. Do yourself a favor don't take his course, he fails everyone.
Personally, I think he's terrific. I took him for 112 last spring and 241 this semester. The people here complaining about him are either probably very lazy and did not come to class, do any of the assigned reading or participate... As long as you try, there is no reason that you shouldn't suceed in his class!
The complaints are all true. you get used to the accent. dont be late ever. say anything in class-it doesnt matter if its a super intelligent comment. if you speak regularly and he'll like you. Take notes on what is said about the readings in class (unless you have a good memory) and you'll do well on the midterm. i got a B and im real lazy.
Awsm Teacher. i took him for 112 this past semester and thought he was great. Just participate in conversations and he will love you, no mater how stupid your comment is as long as you try. Also he doesnt like to grade papers so not much written work
25% participation and quizzes, 25% 5-6 page paper(which is basically your opinion), 20% midterm, 30% final. I took the course in 6 weeks, alongside many other courses, which made it very challenging, but I got a B. I'd imagine the course wouldn't be too hard in a full-length semester
I took Dr. Scarborough for 112 and 241. Got B and A respectively. The majority who moan about his grading scale and methods are usually high school kids who expect spoon feeding, handouts and multiple choice. People, grow up..this is a lit course and not freakin 101. It requires reading, analyzing, discussing and using one's seldom used brain power
I've actually come back years after taking this class to emphasize how horrible this professor is. I have yet to come across a worse teacher in my academic career. Any man with a chewy coffee mug should be a sure sign to stay away from. RUN AWAY. Change your major if need be.
i really dont mind doing work or reading, but i HATED THIS CLASS SOOOOO MUCH!!! u really cannot understand him, he is not caring and he will bring you down! AWFUL AWFUL! the class will be full but trust me after a week there will be max. 6 students!.. dont bring down your GPA!
Fun. YOU MUST READ THE TEXT. After that, chat about it. Pretty simple as long as you can comprehend what you've read, and form an opinion.
It is true what everyone says: his accent is difficult to get past, but you get use to it after a bit. The reading assignments are hard to understand, so doing outside research (sparknotes) may be necessary. As long as you come to class on-time, participate in class discussions, and study for the exams, you will do well in his class.
It's like what others have said: read! If you read the text you can talk about it in class. And if you talk about what you read in class, you WILL get an A! His class was very simple because I put minimal effort into it. Not an English major, and don't get some literary concepts, but I did just fine. Pay attention and the exams are super easy!
Seriously the man is the real life version of Foghorn Leghorn(At least the way he speaks). The man has been teaching for a long time and has seen it all. It?s kind of turned him into a hardass, but if you do the work you'll like his class. He's a funny guy, but he's not there to be your friend. He drinks coffee out of a darth vader mug.
Although many people may dislike him, he is actually a good teacher, and he does care about his students. He does have a strong accent, but you get used to it. If you actually take your time to listen in class, engage in conversations/group sessions and read the texts, you will be fine.
For a man who has been teaching for over 20 years with material that he cannot control, he keeps the class interesting. He only gets mad if you interrupt, are late, or say flat out "I didn't do the work. If you halfway pay attention and read the assignment then you will do just fine in the class.
Taking this teacher was the biggest mistake that I made in Nova. Please look for some other teachers before takeing him, this teacher should be your lasttttttt option. For me, I would rather not take eng at all than taking it with him. Too late for that though.
He's a tough nut, for sure, but he is very knowledgeable and experienced and does genuinely care about student success. He's no-nonsense; the students he "picks on" are the ones who don't take the class seriously or put forth any effort. For those who are in it to succeed, he's fantastic. I would definitely take his class again!
Not an easy professor, but you will learn a lot. He is hard to understand but if you pay attention you can get it. Respect his rules and he will respect you. Come to class and read the stories assigned and you should get a decent grade. He is a bit intimidating because he yells quite a lot, but just don't make him mad and class should run fine.
If English is your first language, it shouldn't take long to pick up and understand his accent. Participate in class discussion, then rewrite what you discussed in tests, pretty straight forward... If English is not your first language may be difficult at first, but you'll get it. Not hard if you do the readings and put forth some effort.
this teacher was the most difficult to understand. I truly did feel sorry for him because i know most of his classes get canceled anyways, but I can't understand him. I entered the class thinking I'm going to work hard and try my best, but the whole time I listened to him, it kinda sounds like a pinapple is shoved down his throat. I do NOT reccomen
I will only say one thing, take this teacher if there are absolutely no other English teachers available in the world!
Anyone who has an issue with Dr. Scarborough clearly didn't do their readings and thought they could get away with little effort. He is an excellent professor with a lot of knowledge to offer a student willing to learn. I got an A and I am thankful every day that I took his class. He taught me work ethic like no other.
He maybe be strict and set in his ways but you can learn a great deal from him. As long as you do your readings and participate in class discussions you'll be fine.
He's real old-school but his lectures are interesting and educational. The book is INCREDIBLE. It's the only book I kept from my school days. If you read the text to a level where you can make a few intelligent comments in class you'll make an A, no problem.
Those who complain about his strictness are the ones who skip classes and come late to the class! If you read the text and try hard, there is no way he would hate you! He is a professor who will give you an exprience of what studying at a real college is like. His rigorous practice of academdc iscipline earned a better respect than this rating! :P
Awesome teacher, come ontime, bring your book everyday to class, read closely, and be involved in the discussions. If you are not punctual don't take his class. If you are late he stops class to call you out.
Read the books and be prepared to participate in class discussion. He doesn't wait for you to raise your hand! Reading assignments are reasonably spaced, you don't have to arrive on the first day having read all of the book. Very thick southern accent, but you'll get used to it, I swear! Very supportive, will NOT criticize your ideas. No nonsense.
he is very passionate about the subject. it's an easy class because you just need to have read the short story and participate in class discussions. it is, however, very hard to get an a in the course. i consider myself a good writer and i got a b. very engaging class
First took 267 with Dr. S and was scared I wouldn't get used to his accent, but I did. He is great and if everybody gets involved in discussing the readings, it is fun and he won't give quizzes. Reading the short stories/novels is necessary but they are good books and his discussions are interesting. Just read, come to class on time, and talk.
professor is knowledgeable, passionate and neurotic. Very outdated. He expects you to read 50+ pages every week. the crammed-chosen material is interesting no doubt about it. but, come on Mr Charles, some people are working full time, attending school full time and they are raising a family. take his class if you have plenty of time to offer him
Very insightful, engaging and fun professor. He'll certainly get you thinking, and encourages class discussion. If you don't show up or participate, expect to receive a poor grade. Exams are difficult if you're not a good writer, but he provides excellent feedback and will do all he can to help you excel in the course and receive a decent grade.
The good thing is, he seems knowledgeable about the subject. But I simply could not understand his accent on half the things he is saying, I tried my best on exams, but apparently I couldn't get it. I had to drop the class, but not on time. If you want ENG 241, I recommend White, she's much better.
