Perhaps one of the hardest instructors I have ever had. Tell me if I'm wrong. I worked hard in that class and received a non passing grade. He's fairly clear and has good books for the class. But he's not very helpful and he demands far too much.

CS was fair and straight-forward. Not the class to take if you want an "easy 'A.'" (If you suck, he'll grade you accordingly, but will help you.) If you're just trying to get an A.A., find someone else. But for transfer to UC, he's the 1.
He is a bad teacher. DONT take it with him.
He made us do a lot of papers, but i grew in my ability to write better. One good book, one really bad book. He's really big on "discussion".
Class is very discussion oriented, he's very clear as to what he expects, and he's willing to help you develop your ideas and your writing more than most profs I've met. Yes, you will work, & he will help you. A really wonderful teacher. If you pay attention at all, there's no reason you won't pass!
grades very biasedly. grades your opinions and grades down if not the same as his
This was the first english class I took. He was very clear as to what is expected. He is available as far as help is needed and always responds to his e-mail promtly. I felt he was very liberal with his allowing different ideas to be expressed.Had to work butt off and write many papers and alot of reading but it was totaly worth it. Thanks Chuck!!!
He is very biased and will grade your paper accordingly. Not a fan of the papers he makes you write and the books as well.
Semi-easy, a lot of writing, many discussions. Responds to email quickly. Sometimes unclear on when assignments are due. A good class for anyone who likes to write and debate topics.
Hes bias on his grading, he bases everything on his own opinions. As long as you pay attention on what his opinion is when u talk about an essay before you write it and write what he thinks then u will do...alright. He is just hard, isnt clear on what is due. He is also not sympathetic to your own personal problems! Stick to a different Professor!!
Shackett is pretty cool. Yeah, granted he is somewhat biased, which gets on my nerves, but it's still a class that's very possible to get a decent grade in if you pay attention. The only downside is that a lot of the class time is spent on busy-work.
He is the hardest teacher I've ever had and the least helpful by far. He is extremely biased and bases his grades on whether he likes you or not. I would HIGHLY suggest never taking this class with him as your professor.
He is biased beyond belief. He changes his homework assignments all the time and is very unclear in what he wants from you. He gives you all busy work, I have yet to learn something from this class. Essays are everything, get a bad grade on essays and you'll fail the class. Dont take him if you can help it, i completely regret it taking it with him
His a nice guy but he gives alot of work and its hard to keep. Also you have in class writing to go every class, but still if you miss one or two assn. it really hurts you grade!
This guy is so freaking hillarious. It's a pretty hard class, but I have learned so much from him. He asks really abstract questions to make you think about things in an analyzation process that you'd never think about at all. If you can- take his friday once a week class. He's awesome.
I took Shackett a while ago. He is a very difficult teacher to make happy. I would send in papers but always get bad grades and when getting his feedback I would correct on the next paper but still get bad grades. The worst part. Im really good at english and have always received high ratings.
He isn't clear on what he wants from you at all, but he's funny and really easy.
I loved this class. Shackett uses really general questions and says "write 5 pages" it's insane- he really forces you to think, form an oppinion, and learn something about yourself. I've used every writing technique from his 122 class in almost every essay I've written since. Great guy but if you want help you HAVE to go to his office hours.
Shackett is a pretty cool guy, but not a very good teacher. In his class it is really easy to get off topic and he is not clear on what he wants from the class. i remember when we would discuss essays that he would tell us what not to put in the essay on the day that it was due
Definitely one of my favorite teachers at DVC. His class kicked my ass, but I really enjoyed it. Very clear on what he expects of you. Very clear on what is due. You have to be incredibly stupid to not know what he wants or when things are due. Don't listen to the bad reviews, he's awesome! Definitely recommend :]
After three bad grades i finally figured out that if you want a good grade make sure that you know what HE wants, and have a tutor sign it. Final grade a C, and a low ego. but in general he is a cool guy. Just not always to clear on what he wants you to do.
Had him for 122 & 126, and he clearer on what he wants and more helpful in 122 than in 126. There seemed to a dramatic increase in difficulty from 122 to 126; most people who had 122 with him and got As, ended up with Cs in 126, and although the essays were easier (very broad topics), the mid-term and final were very hard (no feed back on practice)
He is nice and can be funny. But he grades so hard. I barely passed the class. I spent so much time focusing on that class I didn't focus on my other classes and that brought my grades down.
I had him for 122 and 126; he is best English teacher. I got a high A in both classes because he's so clear on what he expects. The standard form part of English 126 was difficult, but he was always willing to help you with it, even the day it was due. He lets you have creative freedom on essay as long as you are clear, concise, and consistent

awesome teacher! Loved his class, really let us be creative with our essays. no mudterm/no final
He is a nice teacher, but very unclear about what we are supposed to do. Your left pondering with out instruction on assignments and work. Not communicative, 80% of the time you dont know what to do.
Doesnt explain stuff. wtf? Always lost with stuff he tells us to do? Not clear with due dates either.
Awesome teacher, he's really entertaining and his class is really easy if you pay attention which isn't hard cus he's nice. He taught me a lot and I wish he taught more classes.
prof. Shackett is easy on the grading and very helpful with essays. very little homework with LOTS of extra credit offered. the lanquage lab knows what he wants on papers. easy A
This teacher is terrible at giving directions, he has a very hard time explaining things clearly. He has no idea what due dates are for assignments. He constantly changes dates, and never communicates with the class on what to do. He is very uninformative. This teacher is a terrible teacher for English 118..
shackett is great. We only had three homework assignments and five essays. Go to the language lab for essay help, because they know what he likes. He offers some extra credit so you can fix your poor grades. he's very helpfull with your essays
I am a good essayist. but in his class that's not relevant. He does not know how to teach "critical thinking" in a way that makes sense. I was a regular at his office hr explaining to him how and why his method of teaching was not working for me and most of the class. I made suggestions and the next day he made the necessary changes. shocking!
Took English 118 with him at San Ramon and he was a good teacher. His class consisted of reading "What Matters In America" (edition 3) and going over grammar and punctuation material. The essays are the most important and we did a total of 5 essays. HAVE HIM LOOK OVER YOUR ESSAYS DURING HIS OFFICE HOURS TO PASS. Essay directions can be unclear.
This guy is awesome. Funny, because he tries to be funny but isnt sometimes. Very helpful and nice. Easy essays but a tough grader. He offers many ways to help so take advantage of them!
Hard grader. Use his office hours to clarify what he is looking for on the paper. Seemed to have his own opinions on what to write. Otherwise, harsh grade if his opinion differs.
He is the best English teacher that always make you to think and teaches you a lot.
He is really a nice guy, kind of monotone but that makes him kind of funny, his class has the same structure every day and he fills the class with learning instead of busy work, he can be a bit unclear with directions and his grading is super opinionated I also didn't understand why he is all about structure but never teaches how to outlines.
he is a very hard grader. i never got how he grade my papers. i don't recommend him at all
He was my best English teacher ever, I had three classes with him, I learnt a lot from him and enjoyed every moment.I wish he was teaching 122 and 123 also.
Shackett is a great english teacher. Three semesters later and I'm still using a lot of the writing techniques he taught
Worst teacher I've had thus far in college. Extremely hard grader, unclear with instructions, and it will be the longest semester of your life if you take him. He makes you do an essay on marriage. How can you expect a 19 year old kid to write about marriage then grade it like I've been married for 10+ years? Don't know how I passed With this man
I go to the San Ramon campus but it's the same person and I don't recommend him unless you're great at writing and your opinion matches his. He's a funny guy with cool personality but a hard grader and unclear with directions. I missed 1 class all semester and turned in all my work and only got a C:( That's unacceptable.
Shackett is a guy who wants to go to engineering but fail in that, however, he doesn't know what english is, if u want to learn english avoid all the comments trust in me. Don't take at all
Hardcore grader, unclear with what he wants, unclear with due dates, and on top of that on the first day of class he has you write on a card how many hours a week your working. You don't just ask other people's personall business and it's irrelevant.
How did I manage to survive? Longest 4 months of my life. Don't let that be you. Drop him if you are registered to take him. He's funny with cool personality but it's still not worth it.
Unless you love being stressed don't take him. A couple of times we had to turn in an essay, plus do a sentence test, plus do an in class essay on a passage. For in class essays he only allows you to use notes that you have to make for yourself and the passages are extremely long and very tough to understand. Never clear either.
He is tough, gives no mercy, expect to be overwhelmed, and demands a lot for a prerequisite class at a JC. However he does prepare you well for English 122 and a 4 year. Even though I only got a C with him in English 118 English 122 was a walk in the park for me because I learned from my mistakes with him.
Many assignments were unclear. Very quiet and soft spoken. Seems half asleep and like he doesn't really like his job. However, I feel he is a fair grader. He gives lots of extra credit and lets you make up assignments you missed or did poorly. Easy to get an A if you try, but take another prof if you're passionate about english (I'm not).
Mr. Shackett is a good teacher for average English learners. The gremmar rules he kept repeating and pructice during the semester helped me to be able write correct sentences and reasonable essays.
He's great! Subtle sense of humor, but sadly, I think that's lost on most students. Don't miss class! Extra credit for the writing lab, which could be really useful if you're having a hard time with essay instructions. Lots of group work, but it's not terrible--and quite a few times class ends early. In-class essays + 4 formal essays + grammar ex.s
Expect homework every night. Will not except late work no matter what, so don't miss class. If you are sick have someone turn in your assignment or drop it off. He is a tough grader. With that said, I learned more from him than any other teacher i have ever had. The material he gives you makes you think and he is pretty entertaining.
I love Mr. Shackett!! He is a wonderful teacher and person. His class is pretty easy and I would recommend him to anyone.
Professor Shackett was very accessible in and out of class, and he turned out to have quite a bit of knowledge. Some say that he is biased or confusing, but I enjoyed my time learning from him. He was at times a bit absentminded and his lectures were more like free discussions, but I would take him again, especially if he offered creative writing
Professor Shackett is amazing and has a great sense of humor. He is very approachable and is always willing to help you with your essay. He gives you good feed back and if you follow his recommendations you will most likely get a high grade. His readings aren't hard, but DONT FALL BEHIND.
Excellent teacher! Absolutely loved this class. Proffesor Shackett made it a fun learning environment that was easy to participate in.
Don't be fooled by the level of the class, it is a LOT of work, and Professor Shackett is a difficult grader. Although he is often not very clear in what he wants (I got accused of cheating on my 2nd day because he wasn't clear), he is very approachable if you need any help. He also prepares you very well for what's up ahead.
Charles Shackett was the most infuriating professor I have ever had. If you don't agree with his beliefs don't expect to receive a good grade. Directions were unclear and most of the time changed depending on the breeze. The grading system for the writing material consistently changed. The class was six weeks but felt eternal.
Hes pretty cool, in order to get a good grade you have to do all the work perfectly, read, and make sure your essays are A1. He gives out a lot of homework too and I often found myself overwhelmed many times. Other than the amount of work he assigns it is a good class to learn how to write better essays.
Mr Shackett is such a great teacher! I've taken him for 4 semesters. A lot of people complain about him in classes but are also the ones that never show up do there homework or talk the entire time in class. Anytime I needed help with writing papers or anything he was always there and gave great feedback in order to write your paper or understand.
I really enjoyed his ENG-117 class. I really liked the fact that he wanted us to think about what we read in class to form a true personal logical opinion and expand on them. He does grade hard but if you really put in the effort go to his office hours and go to tutoring you will get the grade.
Great instructor and highly recommended! As long as you show up for class, do the assigned readings/assignments, and participate in group discussions its honeslty an easy class to pass. Going to his office hours to go over your essays is a very helpful tool and can help you improve your writing skills.
I have had the pleasure of having professor Shackett for both English 118 and English 122 and he has been by far the best teacher Iv had by far, he might be a Tough grader but thats because he thoroughly goes through the topic at hand and expects us to listen to what he has said. Which I think is normal to prepare college students for real life.
Professor Shackett is awesome. I took his 117 class before 122 and staying in his class was worth it. He gives clear grading criteria and there weren't a lot of essays, just 4 formal ones, and 8 in-class. To get an A, follow the rubrics, meet with him, and go to the writing center for help if you need it (he gives out extra credit for it). Fun guy!
He is unclear professor and assign a lot of extra and useless homework. He replies email base on his mood. Don't take it if you are really confident with your English skill, have a lot of time and don't care if does't get good grade.
Professor Shackett was one of the first teachers I took at DVC. He is amazing and is truly here to help his students. He will sit down with you for as long as you need and tell you exactly how to fix your paper. (he LOVES examples btw). 110% recommend. Amazing guy:)
Getting an A was not easy. Little feedback on graded essays. If you reach out to him, he will spend time helping you. Don't end up dropping for not paying attention to three books. The science-based books last semester were great! Focuses on writing foundation. He plays music while you write in class. A caring father and professor. Hw load is good
There weren't too many papers assigned but there were a ton of rough drafts for each paper. Make sure to read the books because he has a quiz for every section assigned. The books were interesting which is hard or me to say since I never read but he kept me intrigued. He is very helpful if you put the effort in.
Hes a nice guy, but I found myself very frustrated throughout this class. I consider myself a good writer for the most part, but really questioned that in this class. He grades essays (and homework) hard but never gave any clear outline of what he wanted until our 3rd or 4th essay in. Dont feel I deserved a B. Quick responses though.
English is subjective, but Professor Shackett gives you lots of freedom with your essays. He makes you work for the grade, but he gives you many chances and is always there to help you if you're confused. Use the extra credit opportunities, 2 revisions at the end, and office hours, if you're struggling.
Not sure if it was because we just moved to online but didn't really teach us anything. Read three books, two discussion posts a week and then he gave us essay prompts. The class was more of him giving us assignments to complete rather than improving our writing. not too hard, a little faced paced, must turn in first drafts on time to turn in final
Professor Shackett was always very accessible when I had questions through email/office hours which was very helpful, especially since classes are online. Also, when assigning essays, he typically posted videos/examples of what he was looking for in a paper. He's particular about expectations, but if you communicate with him he explains v well.
5 essays in the semester which is most of your grade. Go to office hours or schedule a zoom call with him to go over essays before you turn them in and youll be good!
I had him for the first semester of Covid learning, and I found that he was not lenient at all with anything going on. There was a lot of work seeming without purpose, he would take forever to respond to messages, and the feedback he would give would be less than helpful. Was one of the most stressful school experiences I've had.
Nothing matters. Office hours, making every revision he asks for on each draft, even going in to the writing center and practically rewriting your paper with a tutor wont make a difference, one way or another youll be docked points: this dude just wants to ding points off for anything he can think off the grading rubric is basically useless.
ENGL+SUPPORT: 5 Essays + Final on his book choice. Lots of reading and writing weekly, overwhelming. Super slow grader. Dropped because of how many assignments he dumped on us (made it to Essay 4). Don't fall behind. Essay 1 is about you, Essay 2-5 are on very specific and niche readings he chooses. Not the most flexible. Not recommended.
Professor Shackett has been a breath of fresh air during a loaded semester. If you need to take English 122 I recommend taking English 122L! He gives you an opportunity to make up an assignment in case you don't get the best grade on something and honestly it's an easy A if you take advantage of the help he offers. The essays due he always helps
If you think your essays are about to be graded fairly think again. He thinks of every little thing he can to dock points from your essays. Even after getting your essay revised and peer edited or going to the the writing lab it still won't be enough. Think again before taking this class.
Professor Shackett is an incredible professor. The course was tough ( I would say University level ) , but he writes out clear guidelines and is always available to help. He is very respectful towards his students, offers extra credit and two chances to revise essays.
Rubrics from Shackett are a complete enigma. His feedback on drafts and final papers is completely useless. He made suggestions on the drafts that I worked with the writing center for many hours adopting into my essay, to receive a D on an assignment with little to no reason why. The writing center was very helpful but this teacher grades unfairly.
I took Professor Shacketts 12-week English 122 course last spring. He assigned various homework assignments, we read two books and wrote a total of four essays 1200-1500 words each. My first essay received an F. After my F I made appointments with the professor periodically to discuss the writings. Utilize his office hours if you are struggling.
Asks very controversial questions where if you oppose any part of his view he will drop your grade dramatically. Very political and the essays were graded off of political views rather than the English itself. IF you have all requirements on the Rubric but give your own opinion rather than his then he will give you a failing grade
grades extremely harsh and doesnt cut you any slack. do not take this class unless you dont want any type of social life.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSER, he will drive you crazy. He grades very unfairly as if he actually has a grudge against you. I would go to all his office hours for my essay and still revieve a bad grade. His instructions on assignments are very unclear. He takes months to grade assignmenr, he admits he's a slow grader but does nothing to fix it.
The biggest mistake of my college career was taking Professor Shackett's english course. DO NOT DO IT. It is December and he is currently grading assignments from SEPTEMBER. He deducts points with no rhyme or reason and gives D's on essays with little to no explanation. I would rather eat jeans for a week than take this class.
Professor Shackett is the worst teacher EVER, I wouldn't recommend him to ANYONE. Take any other English teacher you can find, he is so bias and gives you a F even when you do what he says. He isn't specific at all about what he wants in his essays. He acts like he wants you to pass and acts like he's there to help, but actually doesn't give a F.
Prof Shackett is a rough grader and makes you work hard! In the past Ive gotten As on my essays but BAM this class made me think I sucked at English if you want to pass you need to get better at essays since this class consists of 4 essays (main chunk of your grade), discussions and small assignments! Hes alright but not the worst!
Just like many other students I as well did not have the best experience with this professor. In short terms to save you guys time if you have a really big passion for English and want to challenge your self dramatically take his class. Otherwise chose a different professor he grades very unfairly. his assignments are all politically left leaning
I'm so happy I'll never have to take his class ever again. I never thought an English class could be so overwhelming. My calculus 1 class wasn't even this hard.
I am graduating from dvc next semester and his class is by far the hardest class I've ever had to take. When you meet the professor he seems nice and someone you can have a good time with but when it comes to grading it's like there is a whole another side to him. He takes an absurd amount of points off with little to no explanation why.
He was so bad I want to give you a 0 but that's not possible so I give you a 1
This is by far the most ridiclous professer I've had to work with. If you think your assignments are going to be graded fairly then think again. . He takes off letter grades worth of points for the most minimal errors. If you ever watch gordan ramsy he is just like that. No matter how much effort you put in he will always find a way to complain.

The fact that someone soo arragont like him can work at dvc is just beyond me at this point. He does not care about his job at all, never grades any assignments on time. Will wait at the end of the semester to just dump all of the assignments all at once in the grade book. Don't even get me started on grading. Class average on first essay was 56%
Do not take this teacher, Out of all my 2 years attending dvc, this is by fat the worst professor I've ever had to take. I've gave this class 110 % effort and went to all his office hours just for him to give me a D on every essay I've turned in. I thought maybe I'm just bad at English but then I saw his reviews and realized I'm not the only one
Definitely the most frustrsating professer out there. No matter how much time you put in his class he will always look for a way to complain. He never gives clear rubrics at all. Unlike other teachers he does not grade essays based on the rubric. He even told me, "you took the rubric way too seriously" as if that is not the point of the rubric
Shackett lacked professionalism. His grading system doesn't make any sense. The discussion board, which was our primary engagement in the class, required 500 word contributions for 20 points. The essay was 1,000 words and worth 200 points. Many people bombed the essay, because he DIDN'T HAVE A RUBRIC. An absolute mess of a professor.
I selected "tough grader" but in reality, this is what all English college professors will expect. If you took advanced English courses in high school, you'll be more than fine. If you know your writing and reading comprehension lacks, you will struggle a bit. You will write a couple of essays but nothing is unreasonable.
I don't see why anyone would take his english class. There are many english classes that I only had to put an hour a week in and I would get an A in the class. I put 10 hours a week in this class and can't even get a B. If you really want to challenge your self be my guest but I prefer not wasting my valuable time on something as useless as English
Do not take this guys class unless you either have no other option or hate yourself. I have never seen someone be so bad at canvas, and he sucks at grading. Drop if you have him, if you don't sign up for another section.
He is a horrible professor and when I say horrible, I mean it. He does not care about your grade, will give you a zero on something you worked really hard on, and his office hours are not flexible. If you do not want a social life and always be stressed out by English then he is the professor for you.
Gives unclear feedback and does not even show up to his own office hours.
Grades very tough to make it seem like students progress when he grades easier at the end of the semester. Assignment instructions change sporadically. Instructional time used for basic punctuation. Graded attendance. Unclear rubrics, he chose 2/5 pgs to grade the first essay on. Says is not a "real English instructor" when asked basic questions.
Shout out to my boy Charles! You prepared me for the road ahead at the university level, as I have been finding success in my writing skills since I transferred from DVC. A warning, if you are looking to transfer and want someone who's not going to sugarcoat your writing, take Shackett. If you're a student looking to float by, take someone else.
Shackett is definitely a hard grader, but a nice guy overall. English has always come as an easy subject to me, but I certainly had to work for the 98% I ended with in this class. He provides decent feedback on assignments and expects you to take advantage of revisions and extra credit which you VERY MUCH SHOULD. He gives a lot of credit for it.
Professor Shackett was overall an interesting teacher. On my first essay, he gave me a 98/150 which I was really shocked about, but after having an hour or so meeting together through Zoom, he let me redo the essay and gave me really insightful tips on how to improve my writing. He is a tough grader but overall was pretty great. Great listener too
Shackett is a tough grader, so if you want an easy A, find someone else. The class average for the first essay was a D, and it was worth ~20% of the grade. However, Shackett allows rewrites for essays and will often spell out what he wants changed in your essay. If you are willing to put in the work, you can definitely get an A on all your papers.
He grades essays based off of his own personal opinions and views and makes that very clear in his grading with both written and audio recorded comments. If you do not have extremist left leaning views do not take the class.
I took Professor Shackett's the Graphic Novel as Literature class. It's very easy if you love comics, though I can't say the same if you don't love comics and are just expecting an easy class. I didn't have any huge problems with the prof unlike the other reviews, just be aware to not get lazy with this class for his grading can be pretty critical
Honestly, while I see what the other 'low score' reviewers are talking about, Shackett was a pretty good professor. For me when I had him, he provided good feedback, was flexible, allowed for after class sessions to discuss concerns/questions, not to mention, was very kind and helpful. If you put in the time and effort, you can get an A.
I honestly did not expect an online English-level college course to be so hard but it was this teacher is very nit-picky when it comes to grading papers and homework seems like a nice guy but can be rude sometimes he doesn't do enough to talk about what he wants for his papers please do not take his class do yourself a favor and find someone else
This guy gave me an F for a 1600 word paper because he disagreed with me. When I asked him what to change, he couldn't tell me clearly and instead started arguing with my point. He said Im ignoring his argument by writing abt my side as if thats not the whole point and I'm supposed to write 200 counterargument paragraphs just cuz i disagree w him.
I took this professor for the Graphic Novel class online and I would say that he wasn't bad at all. He answers his emails pretty quickly. We read about 7-8 books in this class, the pacing felt a little fast. The discussion posts were pretty average since most teachers require 500 words. Although, when assigned essays he didn't have rubrics.
This professor is a harsh grader who expects everything to be done correctly. I was pretty shocked to get a 60/150 on one of my papers, but I soon understood why.
He is okay at being a English Professor at first but he's really complicated to follow and he believes that I should sit up front in class because of my closed up ear I can hear him clearly but the way he talks to the class again his details are not clear at all. whenever I need help from him he dosen't anything to do to help us like at all.
He allows a lot of rewrites if you're not happy with your grade and gives feedback on what to improve on. I just wish he would help out more in class.
