He was a nice teacher, but you must read the literature. If you don't study you won't do well. He chose a diverse selection of literature which made the class interesting. Overall I'd give him a "B".

I had this guy five years ago for English 213 I believe. He's cool and grades fair but his material is hard. But then again we have the Cliff's Notes and the Internet at our disposal.

He was very clear, and helped if you asked. I truely liked him, although I had a tough time keeping up with the readings. He goes in depth with the books, but one must work hard to obtain a good grade.

He's pretty easy, and always includes the class into his lecture, which not very many english profs do.

Does not grade on what the topic was that he gave us only graded on grammer. Really nice man.

What he wants is your improvement. If your essays are D-C-B-B, you still have chance to get A in class. Lots of reading are required, but main ideas are properly covered in class. All in-class-essay. Have conference with him at least once, very helpful.

He taught me how to think quickly when writing an in class essay. His class has helped me with writing under pressure such as writing essays in other classes during finals.

i loved the material he covered, amazing choices, and he lectured great. his grading was inconsistent-i had an essay w/ like 3 corrections and i got a b, then i bombed an essay and got a b-. strict grader-doubt he gives a lot of a's but he probably gives several b-s.

A great professor, yet he is a very hard grader, very hard to get an A, take someone else if you are concerned about your GPA!

Sheldon is very insightful, with knowledge of the history, cultures, and philosophy surrounding the literature he chooses. He has an amazing way of putting stories into a much broader perspective.

A bit eccentric, but I like geeky eccentric types. Take this professor if you really want to improve YOUR writing. He's hard, but you will become a more critical reader and a better writer - if you are open to honest criticism. Trust him. He's not a prick.

For a english 28 class your grade is all based on in class essays (5 of them to be exact including the final). He grades the essays so hard as if you had all the time in the world to write them. I reccomend this class to those who are up for a challenge and don't mind writing in class essays and having your grade based on them.

Tough grading, but fair. If you are willing to do the work he will recognize this and take time out to help you. Enjoyed his world lit class. If you aren't willing to work hard, don't take his class, otherwise a good experience.

Sheldon is cool. At first when I recieved my first paper I got a C. I was upset but what could I do. By the end of the semester my writing really did improve and I can thank sheldon for that because he really does go through your paper, but thats how you learn. Ended up with a B!!!!

This professor will teach you how to write in class and take home assignments--something which some Pierce professors can't, or won't, do. When I transferred to Berkeley, I recalled his teachings in the same way that Luke recalled Obi Wan.

At first I was upset that I was placed into Eng. 28, yet upon entering Sheldon's class, I realized there was much to learn about writing essays. He is very helpful, a master at his trade, and is willing to help!! He is a great teacher!

He really does want to help students by encouraging them to attend his office hours. He does tend to go off on tangents in class and he is VERY picky about grammar in papers, but I think he is the kind of teacher you would encounter at the university level, so he prepares you for that experience. Not an easy A class, but still good.

I took Prof. Sheldon for English 101 and 102. I found the class intersting. Most of the class was lecture about the current book/story we were reading. Very strict grader on essays, but he makes you want to do better on the next one. Great guy and very helpful, especially with the research reports.

One of the (if not most) wittiest professors on campus. His insightful interpretation of the texts are immaculate and he does raise the bar for the students in preparation for the UC system. As an instructor, Professor Sheldon is great. Very passionate about literature, class discussions are always interesting, and very approachable and likable. As a grader? I'm not going to complain about him being a tough grader,but,he does return papers and blueblooks rather late and it does get frustrating. Nevertheless, great class and professor.

Coming from someone who usually aces the so called "hard" professors, just know you wont get an A. He's very picky about what he wants to see in essays; however, he explains the material very passionately and clearly. He highly encourages students to visit his office hours which are always EXTREMELY helpful. He returns essays late though.

Great teacher. Your grade is dependent on how well you write and comprehend what you read. You will get out of the class only what effort you put in. Could be the best teacher I have taken so far. He will help you polish your writing skills. If you can already write at a high level, It's a east "A". One of the most enjoyable classes so far.

If you care about your GPA he's not the best. He seems to believe a C in his class is a good grade and unless you wirte at the level of a professional you will not get an A.

He doesnt just stick to the subject, so if you dont want to learn a variety of things you should not waste his passion and knowledge. Take him if you are smart/an adult/above average student/like nice people. Class is about reading/ discussing modern short stories. Grades are from essays on the short stories.

He is an inspiring, intelligent man. I enjoyed class discussions and his lectures. However, do not take his class over the winter/ summer. It was difficult to gauge what he wanted in his essays because he grades slow. 5 weeks is too little time to improve writing skills with minimal to none feedback. I wish I took him over the regular semester...

Really, really great professor and a wonderful person to boot. His love for teaching the English language is all over the class. You'll probably either really get into the class and do well or be really put off by his fervor and drop.

Solid teacher. He knows his stuff and will teach it to you with enthusiasm. Homework is minimal he asks that you do the reading before the discussion the next day but you read passages in class anyway. 8 page research paper, 4 in-class essay tests, and the essay final. Go to his office hours if you have any trouble, he will help. Highly Recommended

if your not good at in class writing don't expect to get an A but if you go to his office hours it will be worth it he only grades upon the basic writing skills the book is helpful but you don't really need it he gives long brakes to relax he always puts comments on your paper when you get it back so you could work on your mistakes(winter class)

Awesome teacher/class if you can write an actual essay within an hour, and is considerate enough to listen to his long lectures/opinions about certain things. Bad class if you can do just the opposite. Overall, good class indeed.(=

I actually found him alot more helpful than any of my english teachers I have encountered. He's very polite and nice. Although he lectures ALOT, uses the books every day, and can be funny when he notices the class is falling asleep. His in class essays are hard though,and doesn't give much hw at all. Although for effort you can pass with a C.

As long as you write clear and to the point essays, you'll be fine. He's always willling to help, so go to his office hours. I personally didn't like him all that much, he was disorganized and his lectures were rather slow, especially since the class was on fridays. Reading the text before class isn't necessary. Recommended for lit fans.

If English is not your first language, do not take his class. However, if you want to improve your writing and appreciation of literature he is the one. After I finished with his class I was able to skillfully write a decent essay in 1 hour, he really took time to help me after hours as well. He has a calm demeanor but he is certainly not boring.

His class is fairly easy. All you have to do is read the stories and write essays about it. His exams are all essay. The class is kind of boring, and he often mention about martial art. Very helpful if you ask him during office hour. He curves the grade in the end, and it's hard to not pass his class. Take him if want at least a B with some effort.

By far the best English class I've taken! His lectures are very in depth and maintain your interest. If you are at all confused he is especially very helpful in office hours , he truly wants you to do do your very best. If you put in the effort and read the material you will do well.

Sheldon is very respect and kind, but a bit old fashioned with policies. He is one of few professors that treats students as equals. A true intellectual with interests in all fields, yet very focused in literature. His grading style is a bit critical, just avoid runons and frags and you should be golden.

Teacher is great if you like to be talking to like a child and like hearing rants about nothing. Talking about marital arts and tries to act young by comparing English to modern pop culture. He's also extremely annoying and does a weird thing with his eyebrows when he talks

He can be boring since he just asks students to read the whole class hour. Sheldon may come off as strict/mean, since he is just particular with the class rules. The way that he speaks reminds me of Robin Williams. He does smile ALOT. . .He's just really kind. Make sure you have really great grammar when doing the essays.

The first week, I found this class extremely boring but my respect for him grew overtime & it was my fav class by the end of the semester. As a student who hasnt taken english 102 i still got an A in his class. this just shows that one has needs to do the readings and should be in class for participation.

professor sheldon is a very engaging person. he does grade on progress more than anything else. grammar, sentence structure, and original thinking are important. goes off on tangents but they are always interesting. you learn a lot if you just look at things from his perspective, and be prepared to write essays. his tangents are honestly hilarious

Well, he does have a lot to talk about and its not usually relative to the class. Take the class if you're just trying to get through english, If you are actually passionate about English and are looking for some super amazing proffesor, this is not it.

One of my more favorable Eng teachers. Lots of reading and discussing, but not as much writing as should have. Final was an interesting combo of poem analyses and story analysis. No hw other than reading. All essays were in class. He's very kind and cares about how students understand the material, but sometimes gets too lost in his stories.

Good teacher. Very easy to understand. The only homework he gives is to read, but its not a lot compared to other teachers. 10/10 would take again. His awkwardness is what makes him funny. He's easy to get along with and to talk to.

Standard teaching style, more reading about stories and writing about them. His lectures feel stretched out because he can get off topic sometimes, but still has genuine information about other topics. Only essays were graded in class nothing more. If you have patience and like a completely quite class, his class is for you.

Professor Sheldon's class was remarkable, he really cares about the material and if you need any assistance he is always ready to help in office hours. People complain that his class is difficult, but he truly just wants to see his students succeed. This class was inspiring and I credit him to being the reason I got into my dream university.

He is very nice. He cares a lot about his students and wants you to pass. He is accessible outside of class, so don't hesitate to ask for help. All essays are in class. We only had one research paper due at the end of the semester. He is also flexible with the due date for the research paper and tries his best to make the date work for everyone.

Ill be honest, I gave him a good score because his class is very easy. As a professor, he has boring lectures and tends to go off on tangents. A lot of reading in class and none of it is on an exam or quiz. No quizzes or tests. No final. Just 3 in class essays and a research paper, which he grades pretty harshly.

Professor Sheldon is a very nice and caring professor. At times he can be a tough grader but he gives good feedback on your mistakes. Being a 3-hour class it is real boring most of the time. However he does give the whole class a 30-40 minute break half way. Attendance is mandatory.

If you know how to write an essay really well, you'll probably get an A. He doesn't say how he wants the final essay written, so just stick to the traditional thesis statement+3 subpoints+conclusion and be clear & concise, & you'll do fine for the final. Reread the short stories before in-class essays! Super nice guy, he'll help you if you need it!

I took Professor Sheldon fall semester of 2020 for online class, and to be honest he was very generous to the students. He seemed to actually care about his class especially through everything like the pandemic and transitioning to in person classes to online, he has been helpful all the way. I will say he is older so have patience, but hes great!

He's an all around solid professor for English. He has a very annoying tendency to not post grades into canvas however. The semester ends in one day yet he has still not posted what grade I've gotten in multiple assignments going all the way back to the start of the semester. Also there's 3 essays that are all the same & short but worth a lot

He's a bit slow at grading your work, and if you get a low grade on an essay he will allow you to rewrite the essay for a better grade. If he sees you are participating and making an effort, this class should be easy. Be ready to read a lot.

Just focus on writing proper sentence structure. As long as you don't have grammar mistakes, and can have a strong thesis, you will earn an A on every paper. My first essay I had run-ons and lots of word repetition and I earned a C. After that I made short sentences, and more variety in word choice and I earned an A on all other papers.

We had 3 in class essays and a final exam and that was all the work that had to be done. A ton of reading though.
