An amazing teacher. Totally funny and also so amusing that you want to sit through the whole two hour lecture. Only class I ever wanted to be at.
easy class, well taught.
You can tell he enjoys the subject he teaches and it makes all the difference in the world. Nothing is either dry and boring which makes you want to learn because he is so excited about teaching you. I really enjoyed the class.
He is absolutely the funniest teacher at OSU. You learn so much and he makes learning about politics interesting and fun!
One of the best Poli Sci teachers I have had yet. He really makes learning the topic fun regardless of how boring the content actually is. Awsome teacher!
He was a great teacher. If you study a little bit you will do fine!
Easy class. Good professor. Although, deadlines were set up very strangely, and once you figured out how you wanted to approach your final paper, it was useless to go to class.
this guy just plain rocks at everything. great instructor, very knowledgeable, learned a ton!
Somehow I would not put it past Charles to repeatedly vote for himself on this website, ,thus describing his high marks. His lecturs are somewhat entertaining, but I really did not learn alot from him. I was also disturbed by his constant drug referances. His class was easy, but he lacks any sort of professionalism or maturity. Huge ego too.
He's a pretty laid back guy. The class involved a lot of memorization but the tests didn't seem too difficult - just pretty long. The lectures were generally entertaining, but I'm not sure how much stuff I learned is really practical
Intersting class...courts and civil liberties. great discussion
Great guy and awesome teacher. An A is cake as long as you go to class.

Charles is a good professor, just a little cocky, but the tests are extremely easy (all multiple choice) and the essays are graded fairly easily. Take his class, you learn a lot, and it's an easy A.
Easy Class. Charles is very helpful. I wish there would have been more analytical writing.
Easy, intelligent, friendly. If you get a chance, take one of his classes. One of the best instructors EVER! Only gripe is sometimes he gives out way too much information.
This was my second quarter with Charles. He's a very helpful and knowledgable course advisor. He is highly reccomended by me.
lots of notes but an easy class; very knowledgeable; always willing to answer questions and always in his office; would recommend highly
good class
590.01 is his worse class by far. Mr. Smith is a great teacher and is always there to help his students. Take any of his class's that you can. Mr. Smith is the man! Finally, a Bush supporter at OSU!
Great teacher...One of the best teachers at OSU...I've taken several classes of his and have learned a lot...Take his classes!!
Mr. Smith is an excellent and entertaining lecturer. Grades very fairly and gives unique and interesting assignments. 590.01 was especially interesting about a subject (Guns and Politics) that you won't find taught anywhere else. 501 was also great and had unique and funny trivia and facts about our Presidents.
Funny! Had good notes on Power Point slides every day and also mixed videos and internet videos into his classes. A+
Very good teacher. Makes it interesting, listens to all opinions, not partisan, uses multiple types of materials to teach. Tests are fair, but include a little too much trivia. Take this class if you are interested in the presidency.
This class, as Smith says multiple times, is hard to fail. The lecture notes are on powerpoint on carmen. Everything is easy, but the tests do have an overwhelming amount of trivia or seemingly unnecessary questions, so you do have to study for them. Papers are graded easily though as long as you try.
Charles "Chuck" Smith is a funny guy with an eye for politics. This class, "the presidency", focuses on all branches of the federal government. His powerpoints are long and boring, and his questions draw mainly from historical trivia, but you will never find an easier 500-level class. Just study the slides and make sure you understand. An A awaits.
This class was really cool. I learned a lot and getting an A is not all that difficult. If you take notes and understand them and do the easy reading, then no problem. It is hard to mess up in this class, but going to it is almost essential.
Great guy! He's really funny and knows his stuff. Mainly useless facts about presidents, but good for trivia and entertainment. I'd totally recommend!
makes you understand what you need to learn about the course
The Barry Goldwater of Profs (and that's a good thing). Easily the best Prof I have had at Ohio State. He cares about the subjects he takes on and it shows.
he knows his stuff... which makes it very very interesting class
Great class, great instructor.. a wonder to talk to outside of class
take this class. hes a great professor and made me incredibly interested in politics. the rest of the department is just like him, and thats a big deal.
If you are looking for an easy class, you found it. If you are hoping to learn something, look elsewhere. Getting a high A is easy, even without reading or going to class. Right wing bias is evident in class, but he grades fairly. There are better instructors to take, but if you need a no effort A, go ahead.
Awesome teacher that uses real life to teach. He's humorous and straight to the point. Awesome teacher
Take 589! It's the easiest A on campus! Class went the full time twice maybe?! The last class was 3 minutes long! Charles is amazing!
Awesome professor! Take anything he teaches!
This was my first quarter at Ohio State and after taking this class, I would recommend it to anybody who has an interest in Political Science. He's really nice and helpful and his lectures are always interesting. What I liked the most was that the lecture content differed from the textbook. He's also really funny. An overall awesome experience.
Mr. Smith is amazing. He's hilarious, crass, and does provide a lot of valuable, relevant info in this careers seminar. To boot, he's a great advisor and will show you how to navigate OSU's disastrous bureaucracy like a pro.
He is a great teacher. Hilarious and very good at making material comprehensible. Also had review sessions before each midterm that helped a lot. He is also an amazing advisor.
This guy is a great teacher! He really cares about his students, he is hilarious, and he makes you actually WANT to come to class. I learned a lot, and look forward to taking him again!
He was definitely my favorite professor that I had at Ohio State. It was the only class that I actually looked forward to attend.
Very good teacher and helpful as well. He definitely knows his stuff and the class was not very difficult at all. Online quizzes and a few papers. Not graded hard as long as you try.
Do the readings, study each court case and read the power points. If you do that, there's no way you leave without an A. Class consists of 3 non-comprehensive exams (85%) and 4 quizzes (15%). My favorite professor by far. Highly recommended!!
Interesting lectures by one of the best PoliSci professors I've had at Ohio State. Easy A if you do the readings for each quiz and have him review your paper before turning it in. Take this class.
Such a cool guy. There are a couple papers and online & open book quizzes but if you do the work an A is pretty easy. He is very helpful during office hours and the class is interesting. I definitely recommend the course!
The course was a global view on gun control. there were 2 exams about 4 quizzes online and 1 ten page research paper. He gives a lot of extra credit points through out the term. Attendance was taken and counted to help you if you attended not hurt you if you did not. very interesting He is a nice guy and a great instructor.
One of the best classes I have ever taken at OSU, and definitely one of the best professors. He is funny, engaging, and keeps your interest for the full hour and 20 minutes. No exams, he focuses mainly on a few quizzes and papers, and if you show up more than you don't, you should be able to get an A.
You couldn't ask for a better professor! Taking a course with him before you graduate is a must. Professor Smith makes you want to come to class all the time. He is hilarious, lectures are entertaining, and there are also guest speakers and videos! You will learn everything you ever wanted to know about guns and even get to go to the shooting range
Only three exams for Con Law but gives so much bonus that it's impossible to get less than a 100%
Professor Smith is awesome. The Gun Politics course was awesome. Professor Smith is a republican, and as a democrat I thought he did very well at lecturing without any political bias on an issue where political bias is often prevalent. Lots of extra credit, hard not to get an A.
Professor Charles Smith is definitely one of the best professors I've ever had in my life. He claims to be a Republican, but you would never guess it based on his lectures. He is very funny and will keep students engaged for the entire class period. Professor Smith is probably one of the most knowledgeable people about politics and government
Awesome Professor. Interesting class
Great professor. Very knowledgable about the subjects he teaches, and his exams are relatively easy as long as you know the material. His lectures are interesting and worth going to even though attendance isn't required. Lots of extra credit as well (even though he claims that he thinks he gave us too much)
Really good prof, interesting and funny lectures. He tends to get side-tracked a lot and his presentations aren't that helpful, which made the exams somewhat difficult, but I'm pretty sure he grades on a curve. 4 short "reaction" papers helped boost your grade. Lots of guest speakers and videos as well. Show up, pay attention, and you'll pass.
Great Professor. Had him for a Session 2 class and it was a breeze. Had to write a few papers but the exams were easy, you could bring a full sheet of notes, and he made a study guide. He is also a fun and interesting professor. Definitely woulf recommend.
Had Professor Smith for a second session class and he was absolutely amazing. He was always very informative. Ended up with over a 100% in this class because of the amount of extra credit along with the midterms being easy. Professor Smith is also very accommodating and helpful by responding to emails in a timely manner.
Terribly boring. Charles isn't nearly as interesting or funny as he thinks he is. Information is spread way too thin and honestly the class is pretty useless but it's an easy A.
Annoying and overrated. Take it if you need a GPA boost but not if you wanna learn anything worthwhile
TAKE THIS CLASS! Show up to lecture and you'll ace the quizzes PLUS he'll bump up your grade at the end if he sees you had good attendance. Four short papers and if you turn them in early he'll give you a 100%. Only look at the material he gives you on the review guides and the exams are easy, not to mention there's up to 10pts of EC on the exams.
I took two classes with him! He's really funny and makes class enjoyable. It's really hard not to get an A, he gives you so much EC. The shooting range trip was really cool. I also liked the documentaries and guest speakers. Plus he navigates controversial topics really well!
EASY 4000 level class. Based off of 3 exams and 7 online quizzes. Your lowest quiz score gets converted to extra credit. Exams were very easy, I didn't have to take the final bc my grade was 87+%, and book was "required" but I stopped using it after the first exam because I didn't need it. Ended with 102.5%. Take him! Very funny guy also.
This is one of my favorite professors and favorite classes. The material was interesting and he does a really great job of discussing controversial issues. He makes it pretty clear from the beginning he does not want this class to be a point of stress. 2 exams, 4 opinion/reaction essays, 6 quizzes and he drops the lowest. pretty entertaining too!
Really enjoyed Professor Smith, and would take this class again. I took it during the pandemic, so everything was online and open note. If you miss a zoom lecture it was no big deal because he always posted recordings. Quizzes were simple and the midterm and final were online and open note.
Professor Smith is the best!!! He is one of those professors who will make sure you know the material well while trying not to stress you with exams. I learn so much about the material despite having lots of extra credit!! Just take his class! You wont regret it!!
Great professor, great class. He makes it difficult to fail, pay attention to lectures and study a bit. You'll be perfectly fine.
Professor Smith is the best political science professor I have had so far at Ohio State. He makes coming to class fun and all of the information that he taught in this class I can recite from memory not from studying just because it was that interesting and not dense to learn. I highly recommend him and this class at least once at Ohio State!
I love Professor Smith! He is one of the best professors at Ohio State. I came into this course really hesitant because of his background with gun, but he has made the great for both sides of the argument. He is a really easy grader on papers and gives good feedback. Such a great professor that I am taking his con law class next semester!
I took Gun Politics spring of 2023 while I was really struggling with my mental health. I fell extremely behind in this class from not doing any assignments and was failing. I reached out to Prof. Smith and he was so kind and helpful, he was able to meet with me in person that very next day and allowed me to redo EVERY assignment for FULL credit.
great professor. I took the honors section. Go to class and you'll do great
Charles was amazing. His lectures are engaging, he's funny, and the content is useful for anyone hoping to go to law school or work in the government. The tests took a bit of studying, but none of the exams were overly challenging, and he lets you opt out of the final if you do well enough on the first 2 exams. Can't recommend him enough.
Genuinely one of the funniest professors I have ever had. He made waking up at 9 AM to go to class easy because he was that great. Content was really interesting. Grade depends on quizzes and 3 exams. Quizzes were easy, exams did take a good amount of studying but they really weren't that bad plus it's possible to not have to take the final.
lectures are long bc he talks a lot but they're interesting and there are not many papers. I took it for honors credit and the only additional requirement was a research paper. hes also veyr fun to talk to and understanding of conflicts or extensions
Decent guy but awful lecturer. Spends a ridiculous amount of time on irrelevant, inane details but hurries over the important stuff. Thinks he is more entertaining than he is, essentially no room for discussion because he loves the sound of his own voice. Slides are incredibly disorganized. Extra credit not worth the pain of sitting through class
Professor Smith shows a passion for his teaching like it's nobody's business. The exams are large and robust; however, he provides every student with the opportunity to bring one cheat sheet. I found that making the cheat sheet itself is a great way to study, to the point where I barely needed to reference it during the exams.
Genuinely one of the best professors Ive had at OSU. His class is super engaging and make you wanna get up at 9am to go to lecture. Exams and quizzes are super straight forward if you attend lecture and do the study guide. Definitley would take another class with him.
Goes off topic a lot, you can tell he just likes to hear himself speak. VERY inaccessible outside of class, he is an awful advisor too. Only reason I did not rate a 1 is because the class itself is semi-interesting.
Charles continues to prove himself as a professor who deeply cares about not only his field of study, but the students he teaches. If you do not like writing several papers, this class may not be for you. However, the topics he cover are so intersting and straightforward enough to score well on, whether it's a paper or an exam.
Pretty lecture heavy, but not engaging at all. The things he goes on long talks about are barely relevant to the class.
charles is the goat
The college wasn't great but oh man is learning fun
Professor Charles is about as exciting as turkey sandwich in your parents fridge. His lectures are extremely boring, and time it self seem to decompress in his presence, I entered class with blond hair and left with gray. He is though, a benevolent leader of men, a generous grader, and was part of the reason for why I received an A in his class.
I took Con Law Honors. The honors paper was annoying, but he gives feedback on it to make sure you get an A. If you're not getting an A in this class you're doing something wrong. So much extra credit on exams and u get a cheat sheet. Tho, he did become an AI czar at the end of the year if u said "grey area" on an essay -- it was weird.
