Great class and fantastic professor!
Really cared about what we did. He wanted us to understand and be able to use our knowledge!
Took online, powerpoints were interesting. easy A
Dr. Speer is a great professor and gave plenty of chances for people to learn new things. He didn't shy away from other ideas and allowed the students to give their opinions.
I appreciated the thought and intentionality put into the selection of our readings. He was aware of the time investment on our part and took it seriously. The course tied together well from week to week, even though it didn't seem like it necessarily would. Very accessible for questions and concerns, and prompt with emails. Great guy.
There is a lot of reading involved but he has also put together really great lectures that go along with the reading. I really enjoyed having Dr. Speer if I had any questions I could email since it was an online course and he was always quick to respond and was clear in his responses as to what was being answered. I would highly recommend him.
The class wasn't hard. Just make sure you read the lecture slides he gives you and the book was handy when I didn't understand something. He didn't assign assignments, but mostly just quizzes and tests.
Good professor, is very knowledgeable about Ancient Egypt and was always available for questions. Would definitely take another course through him!
I took History of Ancient Egypt, and the class was overall a great class. We had weekly textbook readings and quizzes based on that material. The professor also made powerpoints to go further in depth on the material each week. The quizzes/tests were pretty straightforward if you did the readings and reviewed the powerpoints. Great class!
My appreciation and understanding of Ancient Egypt was greatly enhanced by this course. The course was well organized and expectations were clearly outlined. I really liked that knowledge on the subject was evaluated using quizzes and exams rather than in-depth papers. The professor was always available via email and provided prompt responses.
As a first semester graduate student, I hope that more of my graduate classes end up like this one. Dr. Speer is an exceptional professor who creates an environment for growth and development. I especially appreciated the variety of reading materials we were given each week from different sources and perspectives. The class was a delight.
Dr. Speer is very personable and knowledgeable of his subject. Although the class itself was intimidating he walked you through the material in a constructive way and has such interesting content knowledge and experience.
He was a very good teacher. His online lectures were clear and very informational. If you read the assigned chapters in conjunction with looking at the slides, there should be no trouble understanding the lecture.
Do the readings, and you will pass the quizzes with ease
As long as you read what is assigned and complete all the of the quizes in the class then it goes fine.
Professor Speer has a great learning platform. Even for an online class, which can be hard to find and use material needed to learn. He some how makes it effortless on a part. All he requires from is to put in the work. Very clear with what he expects up front, no pop quizzes which is great.
Professor Speer really knows how to teach, and get his learning material across. This can be tough especially with an online class like the one I was in. But I've never had an online class be so simple, you know what he requires and you know where to find all the information for all of your assignments.
I've always been interested in Ancient Egyptian Studies and taking this class further expanded my interest. Professor Speer conveyed his extensive knowledge in a clear and easy to understand way. I highly recommend taking this class.
Good Class. The power points were very helpful.
I took the class online. The schedule was very organized and easy to follow. Professor Speer tested on the information that was interesting and relevant. It was refreshing.
Mr. Speer was a great professor. In this class we worked out of 2 separate books and his PowerPoint lectures were very helpful in explaining any gaps between the two. The quizzes were fair and went along with that weeks reading. The tests were based on the quizzes we had taken and were great! The weekly quizzes were a great study reference.
It was a fun class, and I would take it again. It was a somewhat difficult class though and you have to read the material to pass.
The class was very well structured. The material was give in a logical way. Your grade is based on one quiz a week
He is a good Professor, gives materials that are related to the topic and easy to understand . overall good course to take.
He is a great Professor, he responds to emails promptly and the material in the class is clearly explained.
Come to class prepared with reading materials read. Make sure you are specific in your examples and when you give a presentation & know your stuff or he will call you out to give examples from the reading. Do Not try to sound smart and interrupt or talk over others- your participation grade depends on it. Just contribute something to the discussion
Charles Speer provide great information throughout the course, and made the course desirable and fun.
Great Ancient Egypt class! Fun topic, easy-going professor. I would take it again and/or recommend to someone else.
He made me change my opinion toward an Ancient Egypt class that I was not so sure about at first. He is straightforward about assignments and due dates . Also, a teacher that listens to what his students have to say and where they are having issues.
Thought the class was very interesting and the teacher was great!
THe class was great and the teacher was great as well.
this course made me understand many things that I was not aware about ancient Egypt. I learned a lot and I am glad i took the class.
Lecture/Powerpoints get longer towards the end of the semester. The grading and quizzes are very straightforward. Great professor who shows a lot of interest in the subject.
This class was really great and wasn't difficult. I would recommend taking this, it is easy to get an A if you just look through his power points. I barely even opened my book because his power points had everything I needed to know.
Good professor. He really wants people to participate and will sometimes dig answers out of you. Easy to get a hold of.
Dr. Speer is an awesome professor. His lectures are enjoyable and he had experience with what he was teaching. Tests were simple and straightforward. He increased my appreciation for Cultural Resource Management. He even pushed through the boring parts and made them enjoyable. All around wonderful professor.
Knows his stuff! Interesting class and good professor.
He is so kind and Good Class. The power points were very helpful.
Class was easy. All tests were online, open book (def. get the book. I used the older 5th ed with no issue) . I hardly went to class or read the book, got 90-100% on all exams and quizzes. He also gives lots of extra credit opportunities. The thing I loved was his creativity in coming up with fun activities (museum trips, mystery artifacts, etc)
He is passionate on the subject, and gives a lot of extra opportunities to earn an A.
His lectures are awesome and reinforce the reading material. If you miss one you wont be screwed though, they are all on moodle and its easy to read through them yourself and understand. He has lots of great casts of artifacts that he brings in. Lots of good videos in the lecture as well. He isn't a tough grader, but he doesn't give extra credit.
Andy is an excellent instructor that knows his stuff. The class explains what the world of Cultural Resource Management is, and it explains what we will be doing post graduation.
He's a good professor, clearly knows and is interested in the subject.
There was a daily power point lecture, but sometimes we would go to the museum or watch movies. There is a weekly reading quiz. All of the quizzes and exams were open book. He doesn't take attendance.
The professor makes learning and coming to class very fun and enjoyable! His lectures are always interesting. He offers a lot of extra credit opportunities including a mystery artifact of the week to identify. He describes what to expect on the exams and quizzes, which are usually multiple choice and T/F questions.
He is a great professor and knows what he's talking about. You can tell he knows a lot about the subject, and is interested in it. He is willing to help people if needed, but it isn't a very difficult class. I'll probably be taking other classes from him in the future.
Dr. Speers online Anthro class was extremely easy. He would post a weekly PowerPoint and an occasional audio video. We had quizzes once a week but if you did the reading or even just skimmed over it you could easily get a good grade because the quizzes were not timed. Hes awesome!!
This online course was well laid out and had flexibility for my schedule the only required times were windows for quiz or exams
Super easy class, i had it online and i would take it again right away, very informational yet easy to learn and understand with a busy schedule
This was an online Neanderthal class, but I really enjoyed that the due dates were on mondays. I like online classes because I can be flexible with when I do assignments and this was perfect for me! There was reading involved and you have to read the textbook to know the answers but it was interesting material so not bad!
Professor Speer was a good teacher. It was an easy A as long as you read the material, and there was quite a lot of it. His lectures were long but filled with LOTS of information so those are a MUST read. He was always accessible and gave good suggestions. I would gladly take him again if I could.
I wouldn't recommend purchasing the books for this class... Most of the information can be found in the material he posts online.
This Ancient Egypt class was very interesting and I feel like I have learned a lot. Most of the assignments for this class involved taking quizzes, which were not too difficult if you read the lectures and looked at the book. I would highly recommend this class!
I really enjoyed this class. The tests were clear and the questions were straight from the reading material. Some of the topics were a bit more difficult for me to understand, but still really interesting. Many of the quizzes were essay question based, which kind of sucked, but also really help me understand the materials.
I'm taking him for the online Ancient Egypt course, for me the topic itself is difficult but he provides plenty of resources. Gives plenty of time to take quizzes and exams. Clearly wants his students to succeed and understands some of us have full time jobs while going to school so not a bunch of busy work. Would definitely take him again.
The PowerPoint Lectures included a lot of pictures, however toward the end of the course, some lectures were upwards of 250 slides. wish he would have split the course content up more evenly.
Online class (Neanderthals), so he didn't lecture, but had powerpoints for the first half of the class (and multiple choice quizzes every week). Second half was reading the chapter and a couple articles and writing a short essay (750 words). Not my favorite class structure, but we had all of the resources necessary to succeed. You can tell he cares
Professor Speer's Anthropology of Ancient Egypt class is awesome. If you have a real curiosity for Egyptian culture and history Prof. Speer provides a great opportunity to learn about Egypt that includes great images and easy to comprehend information. This class does require you to read a bit, but not so much that you'll feel overwhelmed.
Great. Well-worth effort. Good choices of reading material demonstrated Professor's interest in subject, students. Only drawback was inherent on site to submit essay questions; scary to let the program drop you, then expect to be able to get back into it. I needed to do writing in short spurts, would help if essay question presented in announcements
I felt this class was easy and fun. I really enjoyed taking it. I would recommend others to try to attend all of the classes because you can sometimes get extra points that way.
Great Egypt class. He knows his stuff. He includes interesting articles and things about Egypt. I would definitely take another one of his classes.
I was in the Anthropology of Ancient Egypt class and I must say the class was very well taught and easy to understand. There are some parts of the class that I struggled on but overall the class was great. I enjoyed reading the articles that he puts in Moodle that corresponds to our course.
I loved this teacher. Although there were LOTS of reading assignments, he had quite nice lectures, easily accessible outside of class, had extra credit opportunities, lets students work on there own, the material was quite simple but good, easy grader, EASY A, willing to answer any and ALL questions. Would definitely recommend this teacher.
Dr. Speer knows his material so well. If you have questions or concerns he always responds to your emails in a reasonable time frame. Dr. Speer is really understanding that you have a life outside of class and will do what he can to help accommodate to your schedule. Overall he is a fantastic teacher and I would 10/10 recommend him!!:)
The class was very straight forward, very simple. One quiz a week and three exams.
Does a great job with course material. He expects you to read articles and review the lectures in order to be successful in the class. Quiz every week of multiple choice/T&F or one essay question. Either way he gives you plenty of time to complete quizzes and exams.
The class was very well taught and easy to understand. Read the materials that is posted in Moodle because those will be on the tests.
Dr Speer is always ready to answer questions and is very diplomatic wit his answers. He took the time to remind us of upcoming events, even though they were clearly outlined in the syllabus. I would definitely take a class from him, again.
Graded by quizzes and Exams. Exams are usually just versions of the quiz questions. Interesting class and fairly easy A!
Andy really cares about the subject and wants his students to succeed. He can be a critical grader and expect you to work, but that's because he is trying to train his students to survive in the real world.
Great class! Professor brought in artifacts and casts of famous ones which I liked and the Monday Mystery artifact was a neat idea. Quizzes and exams were convenient online. Allowed more time for discussion. He made archaeology really interesting! I would take another class from him! You can tell he cares about the subject and your learning!
Lecture based with online quizzes and tests, easy if you show up and pay attention.
I chose this class to fill an objective, but also because of my interest in the archaeology of ancient Egypt. The material was interesting and fulfilled what I wanted to learn. I loved being able to take this class online. I liked learning at my own pace. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone.
Dr. Speers online courses are the best, he is very organized and straight forward with grading. He is very easy to get a hold of. His quizzes are not a problem if you do the readings and exams are the same kind of style as the quizzes. I enjoy his classes every time I take one.
I TOOK ANCIENT EGYPT FROM THIS PROFESSOR AND HIGHLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO TAKE THIS CLASS.. HE KNOWS HIS STUFF AND MAKES YOU ENJOY EVERY WEEK WITH DIFFERENT LEARNINGS FROM EACH CHAPTER! :)
This is an amazing class you will learn so much you likely didn't know before, and have a much better understanding of early Egypt.
Course is pretty straight forward. read, read lecture slides, take a quiz. Interesting if you're into Ancient Eqypt.
I have nothing but great things to say about this class! Dr. Speer always made this class enjoyable and fun. Dr. Speer was always happy to answer questions, and showed that he really cared about his students learning. He gave many opportunities for extra credit, and always had enjoyable lectures.
This class overall was really good. The quizzes aren't bad at all as long as you read the chapter. He includes lecture presentations which are really helpful to go over before you take the weekly quiz. There is also extra credit opportunity at the end of the course.
Really great class to take. You will learn so much about early Egypt and have a much better understanding about the development of the region.
Great lectures, and gives many chances for extra credit. He really cares about his students learning, and is easy to get ahold of. I would recommend this class to anyone.
This was a very easy class, all of the quizzes and exams were open book open note and online with more than enough time to get them done. Everything that was on the quizzes and exams were discussed in class and we still had time to watch movies in class.
Dr. Speer is a passionate and dedicated instructor with a true love for the topic. His lectures are both engaging, and immersive! It is easy to look forward to attending his class when you know the material being covered is consistently fascinating and thoroughly explained.
Dr. Charles lectures are fun and engaging, he teaches the subject well and clears everything as much as possible. He doesn't complicate things and he is always prepared to discuss and explain the topics with all kind of props, from videos to artifacts. The class was stress-free and trust me you will learn a lot and get a good grade.
This class is definitely a read the chapter, go over his powerpoint and take a quiz every week type of class. His exams consist of the weekly quizzes, so they are easy to pass.
Charles wants you to pass his class so he will do what he can (with your efforts of course) to make sure that happens. He cares about your grades and is always willing to go over something in more detail if someone is confused.
This was a great class and very informative, but It was very theory heavy and I have a hard time grasping that sometimes. So at times, I didn't know where I stood in the class.
I took this class online, and as far as online classes go this one was great! The class only constituted of quizzes and tests which was nice because there wasn't papers due or any unnecessary discussion boards! Dr. Speer was great to work with and I would highly recommend taking his class!
This was a graduate level seminar, so it was expected that it would be harder than your average class. There was quite a bit of reading that needed to be done each week, but the readings were informative and Dr. Speer was ready to answer any questions we had during class. Class discussion was usually fun and helpful.
Professor Speer is great. He wants his students to love Egypt as much as he does. He is easily accessible via email and always willing to answer questions. The lectures are interesting and informative. Lots of reading but if you put in the work, you can get a good grade.
Make sure you read the articles and the book chapters assigned each week as a good chunk of the grade is based on your participation. If you have concerns about the class, Andy is pretty great at responding to emails, and he is super nice to talk to.
This class is easy as long as you are willing to read the chapters each week and take the quizzes. He also uses to quiz questions on the exam which is super nice! Highly recommend.
Has a reasonable amount of homework. Most quizzes and exams. Easy as long as you do you reading/lectures.
I really enjoyed this class. The professor provided a lot of great information. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. This class was online but run very well. He was very clear in his expectations and how the class would work. I enjoyed the extra sites he had us check out.
Dr. Speer is a fantastic professor and his Intro to Archaeology course and Neanderthal course were absolutely fantastic! He is a great professor and shows a willingness to convey his passion of archaeology in a very fun and engaging manner. The material may be new and difficult at times, but if you put the correct effort in, it will be rewarding!
I very much appreciated his Ancient Egypt class. I found the material to be engaging and interesting. He outlines what he expects on the syllabus. The course follows a consistent schedules. His exams are easy as long as you have read and understand the material. Overall, I would take this course again.
Dr. Speers online classes are set up really well and are easy to stay on top of. His quizzes are right from the lectures and readings so not trick questions. I always sign up for his classes and recommend them.
His online class for ANTH 2237 Ancient Egypt is one everyone should enroll in when considering taking an anthropology course. His lectures do get more heavy towards the end of the trimester, but they are comprehensible. The only grades put into the book are quizzes and tests though. So, if you screw up on those, then you are risking your grade.
Since this is a online course, then the lectures are at your own pace, but the lectures are very important in passing this class. Don't miss on reading the material
There were a lot of lectures to watch in this class that I felt were covering very basic topics.
I thought the amount of work for the class was perfect! I think sometimes professors get a little homework happy and like to assign a lot of assignments and then it can feel like you aren't learning anything, you are just doing assignments. But the amount of work for this class was just perfect. I learned quite a bit about Ancient Egypt!
Class was so fun to take! Learned a lot more than I was expecting to. No deadlines for quizzes, easy exams, fun content!
This was a great class I definitely recommend this Professor
His lectures , slides, and the textbook fit very well together. He posts the slides ahead of time, allowing you to take your notes at your pace and focus on the discussions in class rather than rushing to write everything down.
Professor's PowerPoint slides became very cluttered and difficult to understand towards the middle and latter half of the semester. When he narrated his slides he sounded very disinterested in the material. He did seem to know his material quite well and had many personal stories to explain concepts.
He is amazing
The subject was interesting but the straight powerpoint/bullet point facts format made it not engaging at all. I've had easier and better classes from him before, I think his in person teaching is a lot better. Some of the quiz questions are arbitrary and confusing but most were straight from the PowerPoint. I never even opened one of the 2 books.
Great professor that really knows the material. Well prepared lectures, and straightforward quizzes and tests. Would take again!
It a good course. You get out of it what you put into it.
Hes a pretty good teacher. Sometimes it can be a little boring, but overall an interesting course.
Dr. Speer is a great professor, and one that cares about his students and their learning. There is a not of reading that is needed in this course, but if you do the readings and quizzes you will just fine. He is easy to meet with, and again really does want you to succeed in this class.
Very interesting topic and Dr. Speer knows what hes talking about. Definitely take this class if you are looking to be an Archaeologist.
I appreciated the way information was conveyed in the class. I found it relatively easy to keep up with the class. He was super kind about due dates on quizzes and gave a lot of extra info so we could learn outside of class.
It was an online class. I only learned from one of the two assigned books - the other book and the professor's online lectures did not help at all. But it's pretty easy for a gen ed credit. The quizzes are word for words from the book so you'll be fine.
The quizzes were relatively easy you, could find the answers easily by reading the chapter from the book. You will do fine in this class as long as you do the reading and read the lectures. I think the professor does a decent job of giving you what you need to succeed in the class.
Every clear on the expectations of assignments and exams. If you need any help with anything Prof. Speer is very willing to help whether it is in person or through an email .
The Neanderthal class is really interesting, but the reading can get pretty dense. The lectures help out, but towards the end of the semester it's just more articles to read. He does a great job answering questions and responds to emails pretty quick.
Great professor, you can tell he really cares about what he does. He was a well of information. You don't have to go to his lecture, but it helps with quizzes. Everything is open book so it's a pretty easy class if you pay attention.
The content of lectures were based on chapter readings from the required book, and it was a lot of information in a short time. Professor Speer was very knowledgeable and added to course content by showing videos (i.e., Otzi the iceman) about the sciences -- anthropology, ethnography, archaeology, etc, and by speaking about his work.
This is a good class to take for General Studies.
This is an interesting class. I would take again. Really cool powerpoints.
This teacher gives a mixture of online great courses and lecturers from individuals within the department. He is willing to work with you outside of class with scheduled appointments. Overall a good teacher who cares about the well being of the students.
This class is easy to follow and understand as long as you do the reading, the homework, and participate in discussions.
Good informative lectures, but the knowledgeable side-story examples are the things that really stand out as useful and fun.
Dr. Speer is a great professor and is one that truly cares about his students. The class was mainly discussion based, with the exception of 3 paper we had to write. As long as you go to class and read the required chapters you will do just fine. Dr. Speer is easy to meet with and is always happy to provide feedback on papers.
Dr. Speer was fantastic as an online professor. I have not taken a class from him in person but I have heard great things about him. He was always quick to respond to my emails with answers. This course was quiz and reading heavy but you could find all the answers to his quizzes and exams in the book or on his lecture slides. He will work with you.
Great professor with a passion for the topic. He replied to emails in a timely manner and made the class expectations very clear. The power points can be a bit difficult to understand so reading the book and outside sources are helpful. Overall, great class and professor.
He was a great professor. He is very passionate about the subject.
Class is graded on weekly quizzes, a final, and a midterm, and the final and the midterm have questions from the quizzes. Easy and fun class, I enjoyed it.
I had a very positive experience with this professor. He is easily accessible, presents his material well, very understanding, and willing to help and communicate with students. I would gladly take another class with this professor.
Professor Speer, Antho 2237 Eygpt class does a great job of explaining the interworkings of the anthropological history Eygpt. If you have an interest in History, Anthropology, or just want to know more about Eygpt for creative writing purposes I really recommend this class.
Gives access to all the quizzes and lectures (presentations) early so you can go through and complete them all in one sitting if you please. Super awesome professor and reaches out to his students to let them know he is there if they need anything at all.
I would take a class from him again if I could. He seemed to have a real enthusiasm for the material and was very helpful with any question. His quizzes and exams were straight-forward and had little to no trick questions. I recommend learning from him at any opportunity.
The only required tasks were 1 quiz each week with a few tests sprinkled in, all fairly easy. No discussion forums (hallelujah!). There was no open or close dates on quizzes so you could work ahead or skip a week if needed. The only con is lectures were a little boring at times. Overall, very laid back class with good content. Highly recommend!
The class was online. It was all open so you can take your quizzes ahead of time and go at your own pace.
Good class. Pretty normal as far as online classes go. Read the material to do well on weekly quiz.
Was flexible and clear in expectations.
Dr. Speer is extremely knowledgable in archaeology and provides great discussions that are both informative and interesting. The only work you have to do outside of class is taking quizzes and exams which are easy to pass if you read the power points.
This class was outlined very well. Each week you read the chapters, listen/watch the lecture, and take a quiz. The exams consist of the same questions that were on the quizzes. If you study your quizzes then you'll do really well on the exams.
Professor Speer teaches a great class! I took this class online, and it required a lot of reading, but it was really engaging information. I definitely recommend this class to anyone who wants to take an online class. There are no required meeting times, which is great for those working full-time jobs, like me.
Took an online class. He provided a weekly schedule, but nothing had specific due dates, which was nice!
Dr. Speer was great. His expectations are clear and if you're struggling he'll help you out. My class with him was based around the readings and student-led discussions, which was super helpful for understanding the reading assignments for the week. I would definitely take another class with him.
He expects you to do the reading and let him know if you're struggling so he can help you out. My class with him was online and formatted around the readings and discussion was guided by student-led presentations. This format was definitely helpful for understanding the reading material and topics covered each week.
I learned a lot from this class! It was online and the student-led discussions were based on readings for the week, which was helpful for understanding the material. Dr. Speer is knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. He is also willing to meet outside of class and responds quickly to emails.
I learned so much from this class without being overwhelmed and stressed! The professor responded quickly to every question I had and was super nice! The course I took was online and very self paced. I appreciated this a lot and was able to thrive not being stressed by harsh deadlines.
His lectures are very interesting and provide a lot of information on the subject. You can tell he is very knowledgeable in his field. I enjoyed the optional readings he provided as well.
Class was nicely presented, with what work was expected throughout the semester's weeks. Reading was ok, though two separate books required, reading was rather easy and was fairly digestible. Quizzes are straight from the reading material, while not necessarily word for word, the answers are easy enough to discern. Very enjoyable class!
It was a pretty easy class and I personally found the subject interesting. There was a quiz and a powerpoint lecture every week, but there were no deadlines so the class was essentially self paced. I also found the supplemental material interesting. I would recommend it if you need an easy 3 credit class.
We didn't have actual class meeting times, which I didn't like. however, Dr. Speer emailed us often and made sure that we knew to ask him questions if we were confused. I took him for archaeology, and I'm not sure archaeology is for me, but nonetheless I wasn't afraid to ask for help.
The slides are wonderful!
Dr. Speer has put together a well organized and educational course. It was self-paced which was a blessing and a curse (more of a blessing). It was nice to be able to fit my coursework into my crazy schedule. I enjoyed everything I have learned from this class and I look forward to more classes with Dr. Speer in the future.
I really enjoy Andys lectures and the material in this class. I would have appreciated more interaction/discussion, but I know that can be difficult with an online class. The quizzes and tests being all multiple choice I felt were too easy.
If there were more links to Egypt's religion that would be awesome.
The work at your own pace class type was very nice and non stressful. There were quizzes every week but they were easy, as well as super helpful in learning the material. The powerpoint lectures were very interesting and easy to follow. I would 100% take this class again.
Dr. Speer has done a wonderful job teaching this class and I would absolutely take it again. It is clear that he is passionate about what he teaches. He really cares about whether or not you pass.
Great Professor, cares about students and the content he's teaching. Talks a lot about current Archaeological findings, keeps class interesting. Great guy and great class, would take again.
This was a fun course to take! He was very passionate about what he taught. He was easy to reach and really cared if you passed or not. He would email to make sure we were on track to pass. He was very enthusiastic. He added multiple resources that we could look at to gain more knowledge on the subject. Overall, I definitely recommend.
Sometimes it was difficult to know what the main ideas were in the chapters; however, Professor Speer consolidated the information into an understandable format. The text books were complementary to his lectures.
Dr. Speers Archaeology class was one of the highlights of my semester. Not only were the lectures entertaining, but Dr. Speer kept everyone engaged through examples and stories. The quizzes and tests were tough, and required studying, but for the most part were very fair and should demonstrate the amount of studying students did in their free time.
The class overall was good and the material we covered was interesting and something that is not taught very often. It was a special topic class, Ancient Egypt and the material and readings we covered were a good read and I learned a lot from this class. The professor was clear on the grading and what to be expected each week, good course/professor
Professor Speer was awesome, he clearly lays out the class criteria at the beginning of the semester and it is not graded weekly, only at the end of the semester. He understands this isn't your only class. Study the power points and take the weekly quizzes and you'll do well. Really enjoyed this online class.
Professor Speer is very knowledgeable on Anthropology, and makes lectures fun to follow along with. He is very caring for his students and is just a genuine guy to be around.
Professor Speer was great! I took an intro to Archaeology with him and he really has a love for the subject and you can tell. He is very involved with students and wants everyone to succeed. If you don't do the work you won't pass but he is very good with feedback and everything to help everyone succeed. He also really involves his students!!
I took anthropology from him and it was a great class. I felt like I understood everything super well and overall he was super relaxed about opening weeks ahead of time to be able to work ahead a bit. He always made it a point to let us know he was there if we needed anything as well.
This class was the Anthropology of Magic and Ritual and it was really interesting. The book is really good and I will be keeping it to use again. I always like Dr. Speer's classes because the rubric is clear and as long as you stay on schedule and do the readings you shouldn't have any problems with the quizzes or final paper 10/10 would recommend
Dr. Speer's Ancient Egypt class is a good choice for Objective 9. Decent amount of reading but not overly difficult. Fairly relaxed due dates for quizzes. He also prompt responses to email's with a business day or two. No papers or research projects.
Professor Speer is awesome. I appreciate his ability to take difficult subject matter and make it interesting, concise and accessible for anybody who is interested in the old world. Sets clear expectations and is communicative. The class was not only easy for the most part, but it was fun. 10/10 would take another Speer course.
I took an online course (Anthropology of magic and ritual) with Dr. Speer. I enjoyed the fact that all course material/quiz/exam were available form the start of the semester. Since it was a self paced class, I could jump ahead or miss a week if I needed too. I feel I would have enjoyed the class more if it was in person.
Really knowledgeable in the subject, fast response. He's awesome! Definitely give him a shot!
The Ancient Egypt course was amazing and the formating of the information on Moodle was very helpful in assisting long term learning.
Very clear expectations. With an online class he will ask that you have your camera on and he will specifically ask you questions if your camera is off or you aren't participating. Great class overall.
I took Professor Speer's Ancient Egypt Class to help fulfill my Objective 9 course. I really liked this class! It was fully online and an "at your own pace" class. He strongly encouraged us to follow his weekly schedule but none of the quizzes were actually due until the last day of the semester. Would definitely recommend this class!
He is a great professor.
I personally would recommend that everyone take a class from Professor Speer! He has been so incredible to me and has worked with me and the problems that I have faced this semester! Professor Speer treated me so well and quickly replied to any of the questions/concerns that I had during his class! I would take a class from him again!
I highly recommend that anyone attending Idaho State University take a course through Professor Speer! I found found his class to be quite enjoyable and I have been loving all of the material that has been provided for us during each week! Professor Speer has been a pleasure to have as an instructor and I would take his class again in a heartbeat!
The class was very organized. I liked that it was clear when things were due. Dr. Speer always responds to emails fast, and always answers your questions. I definitely plan on taking more classes from him.
Provides all the necessary resources for you to be successful in his class. He understands that being a student can be chaotic so he allows you to work at your pace.
It was a very informational class. It has got me hooked on wanting to learn more about ancient times.
He is a great professor. He is genuine, and he cares about students. He lets you work at your own pace, so if you have a crazy semester, you are able to get this class done for the week at your own pace. His lectures were interesting, and he was very knowledgeable on subjects he taught.
This course was nice, I took it my last semester before graduating and I could work at my own pace. He genuinely cares for the student success.
Was okay not a lot of interaction from the professor. A lot of power point reading and book study. This is an online course. over all class was very interesting and easy to follow along with and the professor was very flexible with quizzes and assignments, which worked out great for my schedule.
I have taken multiple classes by Charles Speer. They were all phenomenal, he is so passionate about what he does and makes learning the material fun!
The course I took was online and totally asynchronous. With the exception of the final, you could do the course totally at your own pace. I completed everything before midterm with relative ease.
I've taken 4 courses with Dr. Speer and I always walk away with a good experience. Dr. Speer's online courses have always been top notch. The slide lectures contain vital information that contributes to a positive learning experience.
Dr. Speer is in my top 3 for favorite professors so far, highly recommend you take this course from him!
Dr. Speer is one of my favorite professors from the Anthropology department after taking Ancient Egypt. He goes above and beyond by including recent discoveries being integrated into the course, which to me shows that he is passionate about the subject. He gives a lot of freedom for independent learning, so expect to manage your own progress!
Speer's is very informative on the subjects he teaches. I very much enjoyed his ANTH 2237 class and would highly recommend this class to anyone.
Professor Speer is an awesome teacher! He really cares for his students and their success in his class! Definitely recommend!
Follow directions and read, a good class for discussions.
There was a lot of reading in the class but if you manage your time and prioritize certain readings over others, it is a reasonable workload. There is a mix of individual and group work. Material and expectations were clear.
I really enjoyed this class, especially the PowerPoint that professor Speer provided in this class.
I have Dr. Speer's Ancient Egypt class and it was put together super well. There is a quiz (10 multiple choice questions) each week, which aren't very challenging if you read the slides and the book. You can work at your own pace, which is nice. The only bad thing is that if you fall behind a week or two it's a pain to get caught back up.
This class was fully online and broken into each week. Professor Speers had us read out of our textbooks and follow along in a PowerPoint before taking a quiz or an exam each week. It was an easy course if you do your reading.
This class is engaging and easy to follow. The lectures give information that applies to the tests and quizzes. The class is done at your own pace.
This seminar class is student lead but the grading for the class is straightforward and easy to understand. No surprise assignments and the instructor is easy to get a hold of and meet with if you need help with the final paper.
Dr. Speer seeks for students of diverse concentrations to understand and become more interested in archeology and the different branches that comprise it. He always tries to explain terminology, ideas among other topics in a clear way and with a basic vocabulary. He is a person with great knowledge, professional and also has a good sense of humor.
Dr. Speer is incredibly knowledgeable in archaeology. He clearly states expectations and has all assignments outlined and clearly explained in the syllabus and supplemental material. He keeps class discussions on topic and adds in supplemental information/sources when it will enrich the discussion. He is approachable and has good communication.
This professor is professional at all times during his online courses. Be ready to ready a lot of scholarly articles. He says what he means and means what he said, but he is willing to listen to other opinions or insights. He is available through email to talk t or give guidance at all times and he lets the students know that in class or email.
The course is ambitious for the breadth: hist & theory, gender, rank, mind, & religion. It is guided by Dr. Speer as he assists graduate students in leading the class. Dr. Speer is knowledgeable, passionate, and has a good sense of humor. Assignments include weekly questions for the class, discussion leading, summary papers, and a final paper.

This was an online Ancient Egypt class, and I never interacted with Dr. Speer. However, he made sure to keep students updated on their progress and encourage them not to fall behind in group emails. Every week is broken up into lectures and a quiz. It's very easy course if you keep on top of it!
I took a special topics course about Ancient Egypt. I really enjoyed it. His teaching style was great. I could go through the PowerPoint and take notes. There were some cool outside links with articles.
He taught very well and was very nice. Interesting class as well and pretty easy.
I would highly recommend taking Dr. Speers class to anyone interested in Anthropology and Archaeology.
There is no clear schedule of assignments, he lays the course out in a schedule, but nothing is "technically" due until two weeks before the final exam. This can be very helpful at times, but if you fall behind in this class it is very difficult to get caught up again.
straight forward, no surprises, good communication
Fun class, would definitely take again!
Take Mr. Speer!!!
I enjoyed the structure of Professor Speer's class. It isn't stressful in the amount of work you need to complete and the weekly quizzes that are set up to be your pace make it even less stressful which is wonderful when you are getting close to finals week. You develop a much better understanding of anthropology and ancient Civilizations.
The course I took was on-line. When I had questions or needed help he was always quick to respond to my emails and was very helpful.
If you're looking for a more laid-back style of an Anthropology class, I strongly recommend taking it with Professor Speer. He does great presentations, he is a fair grader, and he cares about his students' well-being. 10/10 recommend taking Anthropology with him!
I took this class fully online, and it was an easy and well structured class. The powerpoint lectures have mostly everything you need for the quizzes and overall the structure of this class is well organized. Professor Speer was a great teacher and communicated everything via email and on Moodle.
The online class was excellently structured. Lecture materials cover content needed for quizzes and exams and most questions come directly from the textbook. As a general education requirement credit, we covered the perfect amount of material; the workload was not excessive and the lecture content was genuinely interesting.
I enjoyed the course the material was interesting and kept me focused. I would suggest this class to anyone interested in history.
Amazing professor
Dr. Speer is an amazing lecturer; he brought in artifacts for us to handle and took us for a tour of his lab. He always made sure we were all on the same page in class and understood his lectures. He has a great sense of humor and he is very knowledgable about the subject.
Dr. Speer's is a great professor, very knowledgeable, and well organized. He does a great job of making archaeology interesting and helps to start projects the students are interested in. One critique I have is on some of his tests(all open book) he will have more than one correct answer so it can be hard to decipher what the correct answer is.
Prof. Speers' class was super easy to take. He adds what you need to know and review from the book chapters into his lectures. The book was written well and was actually decent to read for a history book. Be prepared for a few essay questions, so pay attention to what you are reading. Seemed to be very easy to get along with, I had no troubles.
Quizzes and exams can be frustrating. Overall a great instructor
Very easy going and is very understanding
Make sure to do the quizzes. It is easy to get behind
This professor stuck to the syllabus and any quiz they gave were easy as long as you read through the lecture and did the reading that went with the unit. He gave clear instructions and assignments could somewhat be done at your own pace.
I continue to use Dr. Speer throughout my academic career. His knowledge and course structure is greatly appreciated.
Dr. Speer is very personable and communicative. This course was totally online and at your own pace. Dr. Speer let me do my own thing but was available to answer questions or provide feedback quickly.
Dr. Speer's lectures are very interesting and you can tell he is extremely knowledgeable in the subject being taught. He personable and easy to approach and talk to if needed. I have thoroughly enjoyed participating in his classes.
Great professor and straightforward class! Textbook readings and PowerPoints replaced video lectures. We had 12 quizzes and three exams to complete at our own pace. Tests typically consisted of multiple-choice questions and a 150-word (quizzes) or 500-word (exams) discussion. More feedback on points deducted from discussions would be helpful.
Pretty easy straightforward class there was a quiz every week for the material gone over, two exams, and the final. There were lots of opportunity for extra credit.
Dr. Charles Speer is an amazing professor. I would take another one of his classes.
Dr. Speer's first hand experiences in the archeology field added a lot of value to the class. Very approachable and willing to help. This was one of my favorite classes so far.
Awesome Professor, adds enough humor to make it fun. Keeps the class intersting and engaged, multiple opportunities for extra points. Very caring and laid back, truly loves what he does and shows it.
Professor Speer's hands-on experience brought the course material to life. Engaging lectures, fair exams, and helpful office hours. Unstuckstudy AI was a great study tool alongside the textbook.
Dr Speer is a great professor and his classes are very straightforward. I would suggest taking a class from him.
This class was very easy and gave a nice break if you are taking other heavy courses like I am. The only thing I didn't really like about this class is that it's mostly reading the textbook and reading vague slides that were posted into Moodle. He does say you can ask questions about anything though so that it nice.
This class is a must for an objective 9 credit! Professor Speer is awesome and answers any questions you may have in a timely mannor. The class is all quiz based but they are open note so as long as you keep up on your reading and lecutres you will do great. It is such a fun and interesting course.
Charles is great! His class is super simple, one slideshow and one quiz a week. no papers! I reccomend!
Professor lectures. Like to show students artifacts so they get hands on knowledge which is awesome. Asks students questions to make sure they understand the subject and to see if they need any clarification. Tests are fair and manageable. My favorite class and professor this semester.
He has a great schedule clearly lined out with everything that is required and what you need to do. He is always available for questions and concerns and really cares about his students. Although it wasn't my favorite subject I enjoyed the class.
I think that this professor did a very good job of keeping the class engaged and simple. It was overall a good easy class that I would take again!
Professor Speer does a great job at making his lectures engaging and insightful for an online course. He is easy to reach by email and offers thoughtful feedback on class concepts. Quizzes are consistent with weekly textbook readings and the class is overall very straightforward.
Good class to take. Especially if you need to take online courses.
Dr. Speer is incredible at teaching, he genuinely wants students to succeed.
Dr. Speer is incredible at teaching, he is genuinely passionate about the success of his students.
There was plenty of time to complete assignment/readings. Able to fit the class into my schedule easily. No extra (like videos) was added to the course to make the topic more interesting.
Professor Speer's method was clear and concise. His communication is great. He simplifies and conveys the information so it is easy to understand.
This class is a good choice if you do well in online classes. We had a quiz each week on the lectures so you need to be self motivated in order to complete them. The professor sent out a lot of announcements with reminders and always encouraged us to reach out if we had any questions. This class was great!
Dr. Speers seminar class was structured well, allowing students to get comfortable with presentations and talking in class. While the students led the discussions, Dr. Speer was wonderful with explaining when we were confused and giving great examples to help further our understanding of the topics.
Dr. Speers is very enthusiastic about archaeology and has a great passion for anthropology in general. He is very informative and knows what he is talking about. He is very insightful and i had a great time as a masters student.
Great professor as he enjoys the subject of archaeology. He is very insightful and knows what he is talking about. He helps the class really understand concepts and ads a good humor to the course. His passion really drives this class.
Dr. Speers is very knowledgeable of archaeology and his passion really shows with his teaching. His insights help clarify hard concepts and his humor makes the class more fun.
I enjoyed Professor Speer's class. He was easy to get in contact with, and always willing to help with any questions.
Easy going professor. Just do your part and everything will turn out well.
Dr. Speer clearly explains his expectations at the beginning of the semester. The graduate seminar is very reading heavy and assignments consist of leading seminar twice, preparing questions for seminar each week based on the readings, and a final term paper. Dr. Speer is very respectful of his students and cares about them. He wants you to succeed
I don't know why the quizzes are so difficult when they are open note. There is no reason this online class should be stressing me out so much. The book is hard to read and is just pages of stuff. I have taken this teacher for a different course and it was good so I don't know. I'm frustrated, I don't know what I am doing wrong.
