Dr. Tucker is not the best teacher, very unclear, I learned very little in class
Decent teacher-hits basics&relies on you to do the homework. Willing to answer questions.
NOT A GOOD TEACHER, TESTS GO STRAIGHT WITH THE HOMEWORK
Pretty laid back prof. Tests based on notes. He is not a great teacher nor terrible either.
Very unclear lectures. I had to learn from other people. Don't take his class unless you have a really good knowledge of math or have already taken cal.
Dont expect to learn anything from him, you have to learn on your own. But he has a nice curve.
Bad Prof...not challenging..it's very easy..most positive of his class is he always have a exciting and great TA
Very homework-based lectures. Don't do the homework then you won't know whats going on. He goes over the concepts but not in detail. You will have to learn on your own, but he is happy to answer any questions.
he suck at teaching.
he needs to be retired
Very knowledgable teacher. Guranteed A if you do the homework and come to class!!
nice teacher but not a good one, pointless to come to lectures cause there are no tests except the final, you learn in your labs and the lectures don't follow the lab, really nice curve though, don't take him if you're plannin to go to CALC 2
tucker sucks. I had to learn everything myself and ended up failing. If you are trying to take his class its not worth it. I was clueless throughout the semester. Despite the fact I only like his grading style. No test and 1 final
I took his class he is very unclear. I got a A- because i studied on my own it is pointless to come to class but he does webct so that helps. you can get help from others if you don't understand or just study on your own to pass the class like I did.
he's is not a good professor and u have to learn on your own to have a good grade. he use webct which is kinda helpful.
Not too good of a professor at all. He used to be a chemical engineer and is now a teacher. If you are out looking for an A and are dedicated working on your own and understanding the material, he is a good professor. You will end up learnig from TA.
his class is so pointless its not even funny. its a waste of time to go to his class. learn everything on your own and from the math lab. tests are pseudo hard but just know everything from the practice tests on webct. he takes roll so u have to come to class. bring something to keep you occupied.
Very nice professor, but very boring as well. His lectures stay way ahead of what you cover in recitation, but the quizzes are easy. Take him if you are already knowledgeabe about Cal II, otherwise look for another professor.
I basically had to teach myself Cal 1. The Recitation class was ok but the instructor there confused me even more. Going on to Cal II, I'm screwed and I have to go back and refresh my memory over everything. If you took Cal Highschool or you're good at math, and want an ez grade, he's a good bet.
omgosh.. ok first i should say this is a nice guy.. but the WORST TEACHER! DO NOT GET THIS GUY! repeat DO NOT GET THIS GUY!, doesn't know how to teach, no one ever goes to class, my class went from 300 ppl to 140 after the first class, that should tell u something.. don't be stupid n take his class
His lectures are very boring and unclear! The good thing is that he didn't give any exams we only had webct, quizzes, and a final. The quizzes are easy! He's always way ahead of the material on the quizzes so there isn't any point in attending class but sometimes he gives in class quizzes.
Take Dr. Tucker if you have already taken Calculus in high school and want a blow-off class. He drops one or two test grades, out of the five tests (recitation is counted as a test grade), and a few quizes. If you want to learn, take someone else.
Do not take this professor!!! He is an old guy who doesn't know a thing about teaching. He may understand the subject but he doesn't know how to teach. You could ask him a question and he will get lost trying to explain it. Not effective and deffinately not clear. He talks to himself and gets mad at
Great professor, cause he only taught for about 30 minutes over the basics and could do serious calculations in his HEAD! For a cal 1 teacher, he is good.
Very intelligent professor, knows what he's doing, but can't pass that off to the students at all. Made a 4 on AP test, but he confused me when we started basic calculus. Must know Cal extremely well to do decent in his class.
This is the worst cal teacher in the world. He knows the material but don't know how to pass the material on to others'. He makes alot of mistakes while "trying to teach". He has a cool personality, but his class is worthless, I ended up teaching Calculas to myself, good thing there is a math lab!
Funny proffessor (not literally) but who needs a good proffessor for calc anyways. Just go to the mathlab and you'll be fine. Tucker is nice but he can't explain materials very well. Makes a seating chart, but i don't think he ever takes role.
Calculus is up to the TA's anyway. There is nothing you're gonna learn in the class, but at least he is a nice guy and you can ask him if you have any problems.
He has to be the worst professor I have ever taken at UH. If it wasn't for the TA I would not have passed cal 3. Don't take him if you don't have to. What's up with the seating chart?
I can't believe he is not retired!
Take the practice test online and you will do fine. He gives quizzes every Friday and they are not hard. At the beginning of the course he gives random quizzes in class to make sure you come.
He is not for someone that wants to learn. If you can learn math easy, you wont have too much of a problem. He don't know his material
TA's teach materials, quizes in lab every week, random quizes in class for attendence, has seating chart, webct quizes and he's nice but cant teach, its a teach urself class
No Comments
He gives examples, but doesn't really teach. The TA does that part of the class. There were a few random quizzes in class, and quizzes given by the TA every week.
If you like math then it doesn't really matter who you take.I taught 90% of cal 1,2,&3 to myself by reading the text because none of the profs (except etgen that i know of)really explains this stuff for you to understand.when ever i didn't understand something then id go and bug them.reading the chap. before class makes lecture understandable.
He has got to be the worst professor ever.He usually showed up 5-10 mins late, and he would spend ~20 minutes trying to set up his tablet pc to use in class, with no luck.So that leaves ~20 mins for him to attempt to teach, which doesn't happen, because he doesn't know how to teach. He would take questions, and get most of them wrong.Take someone else.
Tucker doesn't know how to teach at all. He'll try and explain something and then just end up getting lost himself. I eventually stopped going to class because it was a waste of time. Avoid this professor at all costs if this isn't your best subject...
Horrible teacher. Avoid at all costs. He doesn't like being there and goes over easy problems that don't help you when doing his homework. He messes up several times while working probllems. Just hope you have a good TA because you're not going to learn Calc. from him.
Avoid taking him at all costs. I loved cal 1, but he ruined cal 2 for me. He doesn't know how to teach very well, and only catches mistakes 10 minutes after he's made them or when a STUDENT points it out to him. You would be better off teaching yourself. Hope you get an excellent TA, because that is the only way you will learn the material.
He is a nice teacher, but his teaching methods aren't that effective. The math lab will help you most, however, if u can't teach yourself, then this may not be the class for u. i got an A.
he doesn't explain the problems. You have to teach yourself.
Tucker is not a good prof at all. His teaching style sucks and hisexplainion of the material leaves more lost than when you started. You would deffinitley need outside help. Going to the math lab is how i passed the class.
this professor is does not teach well....i only passed by getting a tutor...otherwise i would've failed...nice guy...but doesnt teach the material in a way that is understandable MATH 1431
He is a cool guy, but doesn't make much of an effort in making sure we understand the material. Class is almost 100% on you to learn.
WOULD RECOMMEND NO ONE EVER ENROLL SO HE WOULD LEAVE
He is the worst math teacher, I have ever had in my life. He shouldn't be teaching at all. He talks low and towards the board. When answer homework questions, half the time, he doesn't even know it himself. Its a known fact that over half the class drops it over the course of the semester!
Horrid! If you want to pay UH to teach yourself, take him. Absolutely terrible! He will spend 30 mins on one ? just to get to the end and it'll be wrong. The homework is a drag because you have at least 20 ?'s for each section. If you take him, pray you get a good lab TA. He gives a good curve, but you won't learn from him.
Doesn't teach.
Only take him if you already know the stuff, this guy is a joke. Unfortunently the calculas he learned when he was growing up is outdated and not relevant. HE NEEDS TO STOP TEACHING HE MAKES UH LOOK BAD !!
AWFUL! Tucker has no idea what he's talking about. He confused me the entire time. I stopped going to class, read the text on my own, looked at Morgan's online notes and did way better than him messing me up. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
Totally uninspiring and I love love love math. You have to teach yourself because in the lecture it is like he is teaching a class of advanced students who absolutely get math in all of its entirety. Newsflash you get 1 of these type of students per decade! And another thing too many homework problems we only need 10 per section.
Tucker is the best calc prof. at UH. He is very clear, and he covers exactly what u need to know for his homework. He gives a good curve and lets you know when other math teachers are doing reviews. He does not care about his labs and you don't do anything in labs so you don't have to go !!! You can sleep inand just go to turn in the homework.
Dont Take him, unless you already know the material and can teach yourself...I never went to class, bc class was useless. I went to CASA!
DO NOT TAKE. he is a horrible teacher. half the time he's making mistakes as he lectures. he doesnt even really lecture. he just writes examples without telling us the name/section/how to do it. he just does it and expects us to magically understand what's going on. if you value you're grade, do not take tucker.
He does not fully explain what he is doing on the board unless you ask him, so make sure you raise your hand and ask!
His lecture is useless and boring. But the lab is really helpful.Always go to the lab n do the online quizzes n homework ten you will be fine. If you want a better grade go to CASA tutorial, it really helps.>>Take etgen, he really rocks.=]]
He is awful. Unless you have taken Calculus before your chance of passing is slim. The only way to learn the material is to buy Calc help books. If you have not taken calculus prior to his class like me you will most likely fail.
Not recommended --- his handwriting is hard to read, he mumbles, and his examples don't make any sense. He skips steps, doesn't explain what he's doing or why, and doesn't offer any clarification when a student asks him a question. I would not take his class if there was ANY other professor available.
I personally do not like him at all. Like the other comments, his handwriting is illegible. More than half the time, there are tons of feedbacks because of the microphone. Talks extremely slow and switches to tablet pc and overhead alot. He does not explain what the purpose and reasoning behind his examples. I end up teaching everything to myself.
Just to sum up everyone's comments... I can simply just say...Worst-Teacher-EVER. He doesn't talk when writing his notes (and if he does its mumbles of the obvious). Often his notes have errors that we have to catch... All in all...terrible teacher.
Honestly, I do not see what is so bad about this teacher. He answers other student's questions very clearly and does examples on the board that are very relevant to the exams. Maybe it is because math is one of my best area, but I did not have any trouble understanding his lectures. He does waste some class time setting up his computer though...
Class is not mandatory and honestly, is a waste of time. Its probably more useful to go to tutoring during class-time. Basically, a class includes Dr. Tucker walking in the room, setting up his computer for ten minutes, and watching him work out problems without explaining ANYTHING even when his handwriting is unreadable.
Dr. Tucker is the worst math teacher I've ever had the misfortune of having as a teacher. I've had to rely entirely on the textbook to learn the material. If it were possible, I would get a refund for the class. Why should I not get a refund for a defective product?
Horrible Professor, doesn't answer questions in class, if he does happen to TRY he ends up doing it wrong, & says something like just look in your book. Unless you did Cal in high school & this will be a repetition DO NOT take this Prof., take Rebecca George or someone else instead. All he does is copy down the notes he already has & nothing else..
O my gosh, this teacher has got to be the worst thing ever! I taught myself calculus! period! the tests are very easy though. If there is no teacher besides him available, DO NOT TAKE CALCULUS THAT SEMESTER!!!!!!!!!
I relied a lot on the book.Tests are easy if you do homework.Don't expect to know everything from the lectures b/c he pretty much just goes over the concept in lecture. Not very interactive and quiet during class.CASA recommended if you have trouble.Quizzes every Friday in lab, online quizzes, 3 exams and final.Drops lowest test grade.I got an A.
This guy is a magician. I say that because there is no intermediate step between writing down the question and the solution. Class is devastatingly boring, you'll learn nothing unless you live in the Math Lab. Tests are multiple choice. Tucker is older then the dinosaurs and so is his teaching style. Do not take.
Thank goodness for TAs. Tucker would go through entire problems and then at the very end say, oh nevermind this doesn't work. Or someone would asked, how did you get that number? he would respond.. "because i've worked out the problem before." i made a B though
Absolutely not the worst professor, but not the best either! His problems don't flow, and he tends to confuse the class. Daily tests (more like quizzes) are given w/ a max of 5 questions. Drops several grades. Tests = hw grades. Definitely a good class to catch up on other homework in. He does try to make jokes, so give him some credit.
Ok, he is nice and all but he dosen't know what he is going to do from one minute to the next. The 2nd week of class he decided that we would have little tests EVERY DAY! Which means you have to go even though at times it it pointless. He "sometimes" picks up homework "sometimes" gives tests "might" give a midterm. Orginization does not exist!
I think back in the day, Dr. Tucker was a genius. You can tell he is not as sharp as he used to be. He makes frequent errors while teaching. He's always willing to help. But the CASA tutors will become your bestfriend if you take his course. 4 tests, a final, daily quizzes, and 4 HW's. You must seek external help if you want to do well.
Although sometimes he may seem clueless, he is a very nice professor. The first couple of weeks was kind of confusing, but once you get the hang of his style of teaching you should be okay. There is also an online textbook that you can turn to if you need extra help. His class is honestly not bad at all.
He is so nice, but doesn't know how to teach. Just print the outlines and homework out and teach yourself, it's not difficult stuff at all! A quiz is given at the end of each class, so attendance is required. Super easy A though.
Pretty laid back guy. Easy topics-basic math, doesn't require intensive studying. Kinda boring. Daily poppers- so go over last class' lecture. Homework online. No text req. He gives extra credit at the end of semester.
Very easy class! He is a very sweet old man who is willing to help. There are weekly hmwk assignments, & he reviews for tests which are easy. Every class he gives wrkshts that go over the week's material. This is one of my easiest class, & he is so smart, nice & easy to get along with. I will miss him once I complete his class this semester. )':
This class is beyond EASY. I have scored above 100 on every test.. Honestly this class is a waste of time, but required. And he does make you take the final no matter what your grade, which is ANNOYING but he is sweet and the class is fine
So easy! I've made 110 on each test, & 100 on almost all homeworks, which are also a breeze. Tucker is very helpful, & he's sweet. I would retake this if possible! Final is required, but no attendance. He will occasionally give (easy) quizzes unannounced prior to that class time. So show up everyday! If you're failing, it's because of your actions.
Easy class and easy math
Dr. Tucker is a sweet old man but he has NO idea what he is doing in terms of teaching. He constantly called students up to the board to "teach everyone else" and would get numbers confused constantly. I'm not good in math AT ALL, so I would recommend someone else for this class. If math is a strong point for you, than I would say to take him.
He has no ideas what he is doing. He stops stares at the problem for a while then he says, "we'll come back to this next time." Do NOT take him for math 1312!!
He never took attendance which was cool, but other then that he's a horrible teacher. Do not take him unless you want to teach yourself, I used an others professors notes online to help me pass this class, but even then I barley passed. I recommend taking another teacher instead of him.
Do not take this class! He appears to be very sweet, but he picks on the students who don't get the material. He also constantly makes mistakes when writing out problems, and he has the most insane grading scale ever. He takes off 8 points for minor things, then once enough people have yelled at him, he'll re-grade it. Not worth the stress
If you want to pass, show up to class. Not because you need his lectures or because of attendance, just purely for the pop quiz grades. If you want to understand the material, it's easy but teach yourself. Do not pay attention to him. If you try to let him explain anything it makes it 10x more confusing. Just read the instructions on the worksheets
Professor Tucker is simply adorable and an excellent professor. I recommend taking him. He will drop 20% of pop quizzes, 2 homework assignments, and gives extra credit. His class is easy and he goes over everything that is on the exams and assignments. Love him and this course!
Professor Tucker is very nice and this math class just covers the basics. You do not have to show up to class because, odds are, you know most of the material covered, but he does give pop quizzes which add up to your final grade. The final is not optional, but all exams have reviews! Like any other math class at UH there are online assignments.
Lots of busy work such as quizzes, homework, and poppers. He does an exceptional job of being thorough and making sure everyone understands the problem. Has tons of patience with students and goes over every problem. Wonderful teacher who cares about his students
If you already have lots of background knowledge you'll be fine. But if not, don't expect to be taught everything by Tucker. You will most likely have to use the book to stay caught up with quizzes and homework. Also, Tucker is bad at answering questions, make lots of mistakes working out problems, does not explain things clearly, and is SLOW.
If your good at Geometry this class is for you if not good luck. Professor Tucker is not too hard but does make mistakes here and there so if you catch him making a mistake please correct him. If you ever need help you can interrupt him and he will be glad to resolve your problems. There are quizzes and homework every week sometimes more.
This prof. is fine to take considering I hate everything having to do with math, but he is only teaching because he has to. I am not natural at math, and if I didn't have a tutor, I would have failed because he does not teach in depth in class. The exams are easier than the HW and online quizzes, and he adds 10% of your practice exam grade to them.
He goes too fast and leaves the two or three students that do understand the material to explain it to the rest of the class afterwards. There is way too much homework and the quizzes don't reflect the material... aka he teaches it the day after the quiz is due. He goes on and on during his lectures and everyone just tends to zone out because oof.
Reviews are VERY similar to the tests. Hw is based on packets/class material. Never been good at math but in this class majority of my grades were As & a few Bs. I even managed to make 100 on one of the tests. Lots of people talk mess but as long as you pay attention & ask questions youll be fine. Hes very helpful & always goes over questions.
I'd hate to say anything bad about anybody but his lectures were boring. They are not engaging whatsoever. The only reason I am giving him a 2 instead of a 1 is because he helps his students in a quick and a timely manner.
It's very hard to be engaged in his lectures and there is so much busy work that he gives. He knows what he's talking about but doesn't convey it to the class in the best way. Reading the textbook can help you understand some things better!
