He tries his best to clarify the course. The test is not easy, but not hard neither. If the class is doing bad, he would grade it on curve. I would advise you to go to his class every day because his lecture is very important.
His lectures are very clear. He explains everything very well and his lectures are important so attend class. If you read the text and go to class, you'll do fine. He curves the grade and give extra credit. 3 midterms and a final.
this man is amazing! the.end.!
Attend class everyday!!his lectures totally help. You use the book constantly. His tests are pretty hard, but if you keep up the reading shouldn't be that hard. I got C- on all the exams and did none of the homework and got a C in the class.
Van got pwned!
really not that hard. go to class, listen, and ask questions. he is very friendly and willing to help, just show up and ask questions if you have them. he loves class participation and once he gets to know your name he will use it to call on you, so watch out!
I have to tell you that his class is not easy. homework every week. But if you go to class everyday and take notes, you can get a good grade. He tries to cover pretty much everything on the class and his lecture is pretty clear. You will learn a lot. Especially, if you want to major accounting, take this class.
Van is a great accounting teacher. He explains the material well and tries to make sure his students understand it. There is weekly hw that is optional and you get extra credit, 3 midterms, 1 final. Attendance is not mandatory but it is recommended (since acct 100 is not supposed to be an easy course). This teacher is highly recommended.
This teacher is the best accounting teacher you will ever have. He explains everything clearly and makes it fun at the same time. Homework due every tuesday along with take home quiz. The key to pass is attend class everday. After he lectures the chapter i go back to read it in the book. It helped me understand it better! I got an A-!
Although he is a good professor, but he is unfair grader and likes to play favorites. Once you miss class, he will call you out and day 'because you wern't in class, thats why'. hes a jerk. but good professor if you want to learn and READ!
the only reason for someone to fail this class if they weren't putting any effort in. This class is so easy. Attend everyday, do the extra credit homework. Everything he lectures is crystal clear, if you don't get the lectures then you must read the book or ask him questions. Extremely funny guy that makes acct fun! i got an A!
he's a good teacher, but pretty chauvinistic, and fairly **** towards non-asians. however, i would still take him and recommend him.
one of the hardest teacher ever. likes to make fun on students in class. he'll pick on you every chance he get. test are different from the class material that he cover.
He is the best professor. he's tough, but he's willing to help. he knows his material well and is extremely good at teaching. i recommend him all the way, except i think he's leaving this sem
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He is the worse professor ever. You will not understand anything the whole semester and you WILL fail. He is so **** and gives preference to the asian students. He also told the class that voting to allow gay marriage would be the same as allowing people to marry trees! WTF! Just steer clear of this guy at all costs.
This class was hard in my opinion. Went to his office various times and he did not have much compassion to help. He explains the material pretty well but the exams were extremely difficult. Told the class that he usually fails 1/3 of the class too.
He is the best accounting teacher I have had. He makes sure that his students understand the material. If you put effort in attending the class and doing the assigned homework problems, you will do just fine. FYI on the previous comments about him favoring the Asian people...I am Asian and he never knew my name. I EARNED MY GRADE.
I took ACCT 100 one too many times, but Van was the only one to help me understand the material. I'd give an A+ but the gay marriage comment was inappropriate and I told him so. He knew he was in the wrong and learned from it. Here's the deal: go to class, do the HW, and study and you won't have a problem. If you don't try, you won't pass, simple.
Even though I haven't finished this semester yet, but I have to say he is a GREAT teacher!! This class is hard for sure, but he explain things clearly and help us understand. If you really want to learn things, take his class. I wish he could teach 302, but he will only teach 100 next semester.
Lectures are excellent and explains difficult concepts in layman's terms. Exams were very difficult and many of the mc questions were not similar to the HW. 85% of the grade is based on 4 exams. The final was not comprehensive. He did call on people often (nerve-wracking) in the beginning but that stopped for the most part after the first exam.
A great teacher, clear and precise. Attend his lectures, do the homework, read the book and you will get an A,
Hard class, but van makes learning the concepts easier. Explains things very well. Tests were hard, but went excatly with the homework. Curved some of our tests. Attendance is not mandatory but makes the class way easier. Highly recommended.
I would not recommend taking his class! He's not very helpful! I got a better understanding using yahoo! He likes to humiliate students . I asked a question and regretted doing so . The test are fair , once you know what your doing but save time and money by picking a different teacher .
I took his 3-hour lecture class. Every chapter consisted of a power point of about 20-30 slides. In the later chapters he starts to switch from power points to information examples on excel sheets. The power points have the vocabulary and examples for the homework or test, but in a different manner. Exams are alright, you just need to study.
He is really intense the first week of school as if he is trying to scare you off, but after that he is actually pretty nice. He has a great way of teaching where he takes various approaches to talk about the material so no matter what way you learn it can make sense. GO TO CLASS, you won't pass if you don't. He sometimes makes bad jokes too.
Take him if you want to learn. A very good teacher, knowledgeable with the real life experience. Highly recommend.
He is good if you want to learn, got to show up to class or you are going to miss a lot. His grading is straight forward, three exams and weekly online homework.
Charles Van is very good teacher. He wants all his student to pass his class. Always want everyone to be on the same page & understand what he's teaching. it's not easy because accounting itself is a complex subject.
if you're taking accounting because you have to, not b/c it's your major, then he'd be the way to go in my opinion. He breaks the material down if it doesn't seem like ppl get it (pro); His grading is straightforward: just pass the 3 exams and DO the hw, AND Show up to every lecture (includes attendance in final grade)
Took Professor Van in Fall 2014. He is very straightforward and tells students what he expects right away. Financial accounting is a difficult class for most and is fundamental for accounting majors. There are 2 tests and a final. DO THE HW ONLINE, ask questions and show up to class. Test questions are based off of hw questions! not easy but doable
He's scary the first couple weeks but he gets pretty funny after that. Accounting is a hard class but Charles really walks you through it and it's very clear on the steps so it was easy to understand. I was really scared coming into the class bur it ended up not being that bad!
Amazing professor! He will see your effort if u try, go to his office hours if you don't understand the material and don't miss the class.
Acct 100 is not difficult; go to class, take notes review the material from that weeks lecture 10 minutes after class & 10 minutes before the next class and you wont need to study 4 exams. There's a lot of overlap once you hit ch. 6 so tying concepts together helps drastically. Not the most helpful prof, but obviously understands accounting.
50 questions for all exams(including finals), therefore each question is worth two point which is a lot as he uses the standard grading rubric of C(70-80)B(80-90)A(90-100) etc for exams. As long as you go to class, practice mock exams, and read his material's it'll be an easy A or B. majority of exam questions are in mock exams and in-class slides
I've taken prof. Van for ACT100 and currently 101. Intimidating at first, but once he gets going he is pretty hilarious. Go to class and pay attention, go over slides and do the homework and you can pass this class without a problem! Goes through material thoroughly and provides plenty of analogies to help you remember. Better than most professors.
This class isn't something that you can get by without putting in the work. Professor has a great method of teaching concepts and making sure you understand it. He's really straightforward with all the material. Just do the reading, look at the slides, do the hw and he always answers any questions you have and helps you any way he can. Great guy!
Financial Accounting is a hard class in general if you're new to the material, so no matter which instructor you get, it won't matter. Charles Van is super helpful, so definitely ask questions or go to his office hours if you're struggling. Tests are based off of homework problems and slides, and the final is noncumulative.
Charles Van is the man. He lectures really good but the material was just too hard for me. I would take again since he really cares about his student. Try to choose this professor, you won't regret. Probably my most favorite professor.
Professor Van was nice, but can come off as strict. The class itself is hard, but if you spend time to learn and understand all the rules and concepts, you'll be fine. He really wants you to pass. His lectures can be long, but he makes them interesting where he can!
Prof. Van lectures with PPT, he put the textbook materials into a more understandable way for students. He explains materials and exams quick but clear, but sometimes it gets boring when looking at the PPT. He basically answer every questions people ask. If you do hw and the practice exams, you will pass. Btw, he takes attendency EVERY class.
Took Charles for ACCT 100 & 101. There's HW for every chapter. 3 MC exams which are easy if you study. Provides mock exams but don't memorize it. Ask him to curve the exams and he will curve to the highest grade in the class. He is strict but once you get to know him, he is not that scary. He's really helpful during office hours and quick w/ emails
3 MC Exams. I don't even know how I got an A- but I did. He's scary at first but once you get to know him and maybe even kiss up to him a little, he'll remember you and might even curve the exams. I didn't really study his PPTs but if you do, you'll definitely pass his class. He's very chill! Sucks that I'm not taking him for ACCT 101.
A bit draining because the class is 3 hours long, but Prof. Van is excellent! 3 tests & weekly HW due before class make up your grade, & while a lot of it is easy if you show up, the accounting problems are a good challenge. Try to get only the eBook if you can. His PPTs summarize it pretty well, but you need it for HW, & the textbook is pricey.
One of the few professors that I actually anticipate going to class! Right off the bat you realize Prof. Van is truly passionate in the way he teaches, which is a rare encounter in universities IMO. He teaches in a way that helps you remember and provides a lot of helpful analogies to help you remember. Do the homework, pay attention good grade.
Maybe if he wasn't full of himself he'd realize his class and teaching style aren't helping students. I get that understanding the basics will help you with more difficult questions, but the way he teaches makes it more difficult to understand. He acts like it's easy (which could be for him) but for someone just learning, it's difficult. Also rude.
He's actually a pretty engaging lecturer, but the class is SO DIFFICULT. Study your butt off, don't miss a class and you'll get a B. Also really strict on no cell phones/laptops, he makes you print out all of the slides and have them for every class.
He's very passionate about accounting. He gave good examples and sometimes he use his real life examples to strengthen the concept of current chapter. 2 midterm and 1 final. Hw on wileyplus. He curve the midterm grade by the highest grade. Take notes and study and you will pass. Go to office hour, he's fun to talk with.
Great professor !!! Even his exams are difficult but I learn a lot in his class. He gave homework as EC, so you can balance your exams. I wish he teach more ACCT classes !!!
Prof. Van is very kind, would help you with whatever questions you have. Just follow along with his PPT, do the hw and study both of them before the exam, you will definitely get an A. He curves tests and will round my 89% to an A-. Really nice guy. Although he jokes in class, the lecture is still a little boring...
Professor Van is very good at explaining the material, the only critique is that the class is one day a week. Which gets very tedious to get through since its 3 hours long. All hw is online, midterms are in person and offers EC which helps alot. I will be honest you need to study or you wont pass, that just goes with accounting as a whole.
Retook this class because I failed the first time. He changed his grading scale and it is a lot EASIER now. He is a great professor and I would retake him again!
He tells you on the first day of class that there will be no cell phone or laptops allowed. He will explain any material to you as long as you ask him what you don't understand. HW and attendance were 5 extra % each towards your grade so it's basically free 10%. I can see why people think he is hard and mean, but he is actually pretty nice.
This class was so hard! The tests were way harder than the homework and powerpoint examples done in class. The hw isn't helpful towards the test but its a free 5% if you do them all. He will answer your questions but get upset that you didnt understand in the first place. This is one of those classes you have to go home and teach yourself after.
I took Professor Van for Acct 101. He is AMAZING. He is a very fair grader as well. If you are confused or genuinely need help, speak out because waiting until the day before the final will do nothing for you. His grading is clear and he does give extra credit at the end of the semester for attendance. He also makes accounting fun. Highly recommend
Prof. Van is one of my favorite profs at SFSU. Acct is hard, but he breaks it down into plain English & real examples. He'll take time to make sure students understand it. HW & attendance count for EC. Tests reflect questions from the hw/ex's done in class, you just need to take the time to look over them. I would take him again if I had the opp!!
All these comments below of him changing the grading scale must be speaking of someone else. Class is based on 3 test and that is your overall grade. Homework is based on 5% of your grade which will not help if you are not doing well in class. He is straight forward in the beginning and says if you fail the first exam you will not pass the exam.
Charles was hella dope. He is straight forward does not beat around the bush. Just pay attention during his class and it will pay off. He tries to help as much as possible. The exams are based off of the hw, power points and study guides. I recommend repetition. The first exam is important because it plays a major role in the future lectures.
charles is a great "foundation" teacher. He ensures that you know the basics. He does a great job articulating the course material. He takes his time and ensures that everyone gets it before continuing. He does ban electronics so get ready to write, no exceptions. He is tough, but he gives you a taste of the real world, which is not for C players
Great professor, if you actually want to put your head down and learn. Highly recommend if you're willing to put in the work. Highly don't recommend if you're just trying to get by.
Mr. Van is extremely disrespectful and has absolutely no tact with students. His course is based on three tests and he isnt very patient when people don't understand him. His teaching style wasn't for me since he made me feel anxious and clearly did not care about his students feelings. Everytime I didnt understand something he would be rude (drop)
If you are in Accounting major or want to work for accounting field, Charles will be a good choice for you. You could learn lots of useful things not only to pass the class. He gives 2 midterms and a final, even though they are tough; but if you put more effort in this class, you will receive a good score. Little EC at the end of the semester.
Sourdough bread, water bottle, and sssss in almost every sentence. Perfect professor to teach about life but not really about accounting. His lectures are inefficient and he expects students to know literally everything from the textbook. I've heard that each of his exams is difficult, containing at least 4-5 chapters worth of textbook materials.
Classwork problems are different from the textbook and the homework and are much more difficult. The exams are even more difficult than classwork problems. Cost accounting is already pretty difficult but the professor just makes it even more difficult - he overcomplicates everything, making students' lives even more miserable as they are.
He seems intimidating in the beginning but he is SO NICE. As long as you pay attention in his class and actively make an effort to do well, he will help you pass. It's not an easy class for sure but its important, and he's the best professor for the class.
3 tests all year that are purely MC. He is kind of mean and intimidating but he wasn't too bad. Can come off as arrogant at times, but he is experienced and knows accounting really well. His accent can get confusing at times too but he's cool in general. Just study and pay attention.
He is a good teacher and makes the class interesting. For Acct 100 he has three exams totaling your final grade. His three exams are very hard and require a lot of studying. I did feel intimidated by him. The previous review should disregard that. I learned a lot about accounting. However, he is a hard teacher and exams are no expectation.
Just go to every class and don't be on your phone while there. He breaks everything down really easily. The people that don't pass are the ones that don't go. It can get difficult because that's just the subject, but he was an accountant so he gives you tricks to make it easier.
Attendance and Homework are EC. 3 Exams. Have reviews for all 3 exams for us and just study it. More than half of the questions from exams come from review. Go to class every day because he explained things step by step which can make us easy to understand.
Van always had a rude comment about your success in his class. Had obvious favorites in class and often compared students, which caused tension. I did not feel motivated, nor did I feel like he considered that we come from different backgrounds. If youre familiar with accounting go for it. if not, I would DEF. recommend taking with someone else.
He expects excellence and for you to skim the material before you come to class. If you don't, you will be lost. But, he gives good examples & lots of practice exams 10% extra credit if you attend class and do all the homework. He has good structure, but can be rigid. He doesn't connect with students v well > leads to misunderstanding questions
Professor Van knows tax, it's what he does. He is knowledgeable, thorough and clear. The test were a little hard, but you gotta read the book at least once, listen to his lectures, do practice problems and you will be fine. Extra credit every class. In regular class you get a 1 page cheat sheet, front and back, for exam. Open book during pandemic.
If you have the chance to take a different professor, please go for it. I will never take his classes again. Expects you to know so much, egoastic, talks about irrelevant things, give the hardest exam and makes you feel dumb when you ask a question.
Hes sort of rude :/ He acts like hes better than the students and boasts his wealth. He gave like 1 inspiring speech but the rest of the semester sucked. I wanted to minor in business but after taking this class I decided not to just bc of how bad an experience it was. Never again!
Took him in the fall and the class was based on 3 exams and homework which is extra credit. His grading is pretty straight forward you just need to study and pay attention to his lectures.
Grade is based completely on 3 exams. If you don't do well on one exam you are screwed. An A is 96%+, which isn't even reasonable. Take a different professor for this course.
I can feel that he respects every single one of his students. I suggest finishing the homework as early as possible, take notes & review notes. Homework are extra credit so it's a must do, and it's why my grade was 100%+. Do the mock exam and ask him questions if you are confused on the question. Everyone is different and requires different help.
I don't think people realize the subject itself is hard but Van is one of the most helpful professors I've had for this class(yes ive had to take this subject multiple times tbh) His grading criteria is clear, he encourages students to ask for help and will slow down/break down his lectures if needed. 2 MT 1 final. Make the effort and you'll b fine
Be patient and willing to learn. I love the examples.
If you want a professor that actually cares about you learning and passing his class with an A, then professor Charles Van is who you want. His extra credit will bump you a whole 10% if you complete your all of homework. He genuinely cares about students and their success. He does not teach for money, he does it to make a difference. You will see.
1000% would NOT RECOMMEND taking his classes, horrible experience especially when his inperson lectures sux. Too egotistic, there are so much out there than teaching Charles.
AVOID! Has 3 exams and homework every week. If you miss anything he won't budge and don't even think about asking because he will belittle you in every way! Would NOT recommend at all. Of no help to his students
He's a great professor. He records his lectures, so if you're confused or need refreshing, his lectures are there to help you. For those planning on taking his class make sure to STUDY for his exams. I would strongly advise you to study by using the homework assignments. If you study for his exams and do your homework, you will pass his class.
I would not recommend. Your grade is dependent on 3 exams and if you do bad on one of them, you're not going to do well in the class. His class is very lecture heavy and what he teaches is completely different from the homework. He says his passion is teaching but it definitely doesn't seem like it.
