He teaches most literature courses, he's absent a lot, but he's nice and interesting when he's there. He's more into dicussing books than having us memorize them, which is awesome. I think he's hot, but that's not why I recommend him.
Dr. Vogel was a joy to learn from. He was late alot but I'll let it slide.
Very helpful and respectful of students' views. He's absent a lot, or late, but he's worth waiting around for.

Needs serious work on communication skills. Seems to get frustrated when people in the class don't understand his unclear intructions. He doesn't expect much though.
i've had charles three times now and loved each of his classes. he's probably the smartest professor i've ever had. he's much more interested in reader-response than traditional modes of criticism, and that's a nice change from the hard-core theorists invading the campus. a very generous grader too. he understands now everyone's a great writer.
Very little homework and postpones lots of assignments. You do like 3 major papers and he lets you redo them a lot for a higher grade. He is very critical grader.

Great instructor, really cares about his students on an academic level as well as a personal level. He is very personable and extremely intelligent.
Bad instructor, usually unprepared, if he doesn't like your writing style you get screwed on your papers. I wouldn't reccomend him, although he is a pretty nice guy.
He is nice enough. He does not give any feedback to how well you are doing. The tests are vague and ridiculous. There is almost no point to going to the class.
I enjoyed this class. He gives paper instructions of what is expected from each paper. If you follow the guidlines you will do well. You are able to give him your paper beforehand for him to critique. He is a very nice guy. If you come to class and follow the assignement papers, recieving a good grade is no problem.
I still can't decide if he's easy or hard. He grades hard initially but then you can fix your paper and turn it in again for a better grade. I just sit in the back and talk to my friends every time but I still have an A.
He was very unclear on assignments. He didn't give us our grades on papers until the last day of class when it was too late to make up. I would never take him again!
I wouldn't recommend him. He tells you to change one thing on your paper, then when you change it he tells you that you did it wrong again. It is really annoying because it is hard to tell what he wants from you. He also gives you a lot of busy work. Some of my friends in other English 2010 classes didn't do half as much as I had to do.
He is brilliant. I think that I learned more from him than any other teacher. The way he teaches encorages independent thought, you cannot rely on him to tell you everything, which makes him an incredible teacher. Unconventional yes, but if you want busy work and completely controlling teachers go back to high school!
We never got any input on how we did we were left guessing on what we would grades we would get. No feedback whatsoever. Unclear and he even tried to give us an assignment that contradicted itself and basically told the students they were stupid for not understanding. Smart, yes. Good teacher, absolutely no. Never take a class from him.
I would not tell my worse enemy to take his class!
Class is full of busy work, however if you do it (not even well) you will pass. Short paper due every class period, but only two end up being graded. One large research paper due at end of semester. acts like he grades hard, but he really doesn't. If you approach him for help, he will help you out. Not the worst teacher but not the best!
Great teacher. Encouraged independent thought and learning. If you want to know anything, you have but to ask and he will give you whatever answer you need or lead you to find it. Really enjoyed the class.
Great teacher! Obviously if you're in this upper division class you like literature and like to read. So don't be alarmed at the amount of reading that is assigned! The actual writing assignments are somewhat unclear, but he is very nice and will help you out if you ask.
He's GREAT! 1pg due every class about readings, variety in assignments and they're short. Gives tips on your writing each class. Major research paper, but you choose your topic and he spoon feeds it to you. Second half of class was all just working on the paper. He's clear if you GO 2 class & listen, it's not busy work, you have to practice writing
What a great guy! He has a wonderful sense of humor and treats his students like adults (he will hold your hand if need be). If you want to do well and learn how to write an A research paper you must got to class. He helps you every step of the way and tells you exactly how to get a good grade. You can also redo work to improve your grade.
It's hard to rate this guy. He was pretty good...very smart and informative. If you do the reading you'll do ok in class. The trouble is how unclear he can be about assignments and such. Also, there is a TON of work--an essay due every class period. He's a good teacher but expect to put a lot of time into this class (reading and writing).
This is easily one of the greatest proffesors ever. This is college kids you have to make an effort and he will teach you and help you immensely every step of the way! BEST TEACHER EVER
No higher level thinking involved. Never know what he wants us to look for in the reading - it changes on a whim. I would do better just doing the reading on my own. He never gives us our papers back, so we don't know how we are doing. Nice guy though.
Imagine that - reading and writing in an English class... And ambiguity to boot! What a shocker. In reality, Dr. Vogel is brilliant and considerate, but won't spoon-feed you. Yes, he allows you to do most of the higher-level thinking on your own. He's not looking for specific answers, he's looking for a little original thinking.
Way nice guy! Very helpful and willing to let you catch up if talk to him!
This guy is awesome! Yes his classes require a lot of work, but what eng class doesn't? He is very connected with the class and makes you want to come. He makes assignment creative so you have a lot of space for free thinking.
it is an intensive course. a lot of reading, writing, and critical thinking and analyses. He doesn't grade easily on essays making it hard to differentiate what he wants from your writing.
Charles is awesome! He is one of the fairest teachers I've ever had! This class does require alot of reading but thats to be expected with an upper division english class. He is very fair in his grading. If you take the time to talk to him after class about your concerns he will be very helpful and work with you on whatever it is you need.Nice guy!
Awesome teacher! This class requires alot of writing but thats to be expected in a class like this.Charles is very helpful in giving feedback on your papers.Your grade isn't final on your papers until the end of the semester. You can revise your papers as many times as you want until you get the grade you're after. One of the nicest teachers ever!
Vogel is so sick! he is kinda confusing sometimes but is extremely willing to help you with anything. I transfered into the class at midterm and he was awesome to me and helpful. His class is kinda tough but if you're willing to work it will be awesome. He really is so rad. End research paper was tough but he helped me a ton with it to get an an A.
DR. V IS THE MAN. TOOK MY WRITING TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL. WHATEVER YOU PUT INTO THE CLASS IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU GET BACK. MUST TAKE AT UVU! XOXO
Dr. Vogel, while an extremely nice man, is a very poor teacher. His classes are unorganized. He purposefully makes the class seem more difficult than it really is in the beginning to scare students into attending class. I've had two classes with him, both had the same flaws. He grades very easily, but class is a total waste of time. Avoid him!
probably the best teacher i have ever had and i have been to several universities across the country. he is extremely helpful and will chat with you about assignments for hours if you need it. the assignments are easy, but the 12 page paper at the end takes a fair amount of work (required for course). paper is easy b/c he walks you through it
Charles is awesome! This is the 3rd class I've had him for and I would take him again if I could. He gives u helpful feedback on your papers.3890 isn't an easy class and I'm glad I got him for it.He realizes that not every student is going 2 have a knack for New Historicism. It's a hard style of writing.Take Vogel if u have a chance 2!He is the best!
Very hard, a lot of busy work. I felt like I didn't have time to think about what I was writing, I just had to wing it all. One assignment after another, some of it feels like busy work. Still not a bad teacher. Hard grader. Not too much reading, just a lot of writing. He works with you though.
Great teacher! He is tough when he grades but gives you unlimited opportunities to improve that grade. You are able to revise all of your papers, as many times as you want. Fun class!
Dr. Vogel was a great teacher. He really helped me to get through this class. The assignments were really straight forward and fun. The nice thing about the class is he lets you redo al the assignments if you didn't get a good grade. So if youare willing to put forth the effort he will help you. Great teacher! Take him
New Historicism is a very hard style of writing. So teaching it very simply would help, HE DOESN'T. He complicates every step. I asked for examples of this type of critique and I never saw any. I also went to the writing lab on campus and the tutor had never heard of it. I think he needs to rethink his teaching methods.
Despite the fact that Modern American literature is amazing, this class was pathetic and boring. The level of expectation is humiliatingly low, and students are required nothing more than Book Club-esque "analysis" (if even that.) This was the worst lit class I've ever had.
Do not take this class online he is just there for a pay check and he will not help you also is down right rude when ask question Seems to have a great understanding of English but is unwilling to share this knowledge with students Will just tell you look at handout and leave very vague comments so if you can teach yourself English will do great
I took ENGL 2020 online and I should be receiving a high grade. He is not that helpful, but if you do all the work you will do very will. Also, he lets you revise your major papers at the end of the class for a better grade. Easy class, just nopt all that informative.
Like many others have said, he isn't helpful. Yeah you can revise your paper at the end, but I received a lower grade on the final than I did on my first submission. How does that make sense? I wouldn't recommend taking English online form him.
I had no problems with this course. It is time consuming and at times difficult. Dr. Vogel is not going to hand you a free A. It is simple, follow the instructions, work hard, turn your assignments in on time, and you will do well.
Dr. Vogel is obviously knowledgable in his subject, and I was really looking forward to learning from him. However, I felt the class to be very disorganized and class time was rarely used effectively. He is simply hard to read, but I found him to be a much easier grader than I was expecting. As long as you do the work, you should be just fine.
It's hard to rate a professor when you take the class online, however, the class itself is terrible. You have to write a 15+ page research paper (along with other assignments throughout the semester.) Maybe it's just me but a 15 + page paper is just ridiculous for a gen ed. It took up so much time that I got behind on other classes.
Most of these reviews are fairly old so i think times have changed. He is awesome, hilarious, and class is fun. We watched a lot of John Oliver. He isn't hard at all. He assigns a 10 pg paper at the end of the semester, which sounds strenuous, but he gives you a lot of time to do it. As long as you pick a topic you like, you'll be fine.
Had to drop it--didn't have time for this. Each assignment is clearly laid out (which I love), as 50-100-200 pts (final draft) and the last portfolio-500 pts. A bunch of research papers and synthesis. I'm sure it'll be worth it for my Doctorate but for now I don't have the time and it's not balanced for a summer class-Taking English 2010 instead.
Professor Vogel can be long-winded sometimes during lectures. However, if you actually care about what you're studying, you'll appreciate his professionalism+knowledge about the course material. There's a LOT of writing to do; between discussion board posts and essays, you will stay busy. He grades strictly, but allows corrections on big papers.
I went into this class expecting that it would be an enjoyable class. However, I found that he cancelled class all the time. He does not seem to care about any of his classes. I think he is the stereotypical professor who has stayed because he gets paid to be here but doesn't care if you pass or fail. If you give try hard, don't expect him to care.
I took Brit Lit from Charles because it fit with my schedule. Everyday you have a reading assignment, post your thoughts on what you read in a discussion post and then go to class and basically just share your thoughts. This may work for some students, but I honestly hated the way this class was set up. Not my favorite teacher.
Dr. Vogel relies on students to do peer reviews of your research process. It isn't helpful to get feedback from students that don't know any more than you do about the process. He didn't give any feedback on the 15 page research paper until two weeks before it was due. When he did finally give feedback, it was almost too late to complete it all.
15 page paper required - argumentative research. Clear expectations. Not as bad as I thought it would be. Received a B+. Lots of feedback given, both peer and professor. Weekly discussions - helpful to final paper. Final portfolio 30% of grade. About 7 drafts due before final - Not bad. Pretty easy grader on discussions. APA Format. No tests.
I am writing this at the end of the semester; I currently have an A. So this is not a bad review because of my grade. Vogel is very smart, but sucks as a teacher. He is all about busy work, SO much busy work. He also wastes class time talking about things or topics that we should have done as homework. I learned next to nothing in this class.
You write a 15 pg paper. I'll admit, it's excessive to write a paper that long for an English class when it's not your major. However, all of the assignments build to that paper. There aren't unnecessary assignments or quizzes. He grades easy!! HE WILL WORK WITH YOU. I was struggling and he let me turn things in late. Don't bother buying the book.
Charles is a very easy going guy. He is the type of professor that focuses more on making sure his students understand and enjoy the material than on grades. He assigns an immense amount of reading each class period, but even if you don't read it all you will still gain a lot and pass easily. His classes make me feel involved and intelligent.
My experience with this class was horrible. I too the ENGL 2020 online course and honestly didn't understand what was happening half of the time. He wasn't very clear when explaining our tasks and when I asked a question about citing something, he did not give a clear answer and instead directed me to a source I had already looked at.
Required textbook but there's an online version. Lots of online discussions and readings the entire semester. No "tests" but lots of essays. 3 essays total+final portfolio+final presentation at the end of semester. He usually takes attendance and just discusses the readings in class. Super boring, tough essay grader, but nice enough.
not that good
Professor Vogel is inspirational. I took this class online and he still managed to be involved and give great feedback. Expectations are clear and the course is set up to help you succeed. He provides every tool you need to be successful in this course.
Online. Super well structured course. Lots of students: there is good feedback from Dr. Vogel, but it can take a few weeks. Whole course is writing on 20pg paper. You choose the topic. APA. If you work on your assignments consistently, you'll be fine. Requires and honest effort. DON'T fall behind or you will die.
Professor Vogel is a great guy, but he is very spontaneous and he is a very laid back kind of teacher. His classes do not follow a set schedule, and he randomly assigns additional homework and quizzes. Class usually tends to be whatever he feels like talking about that day. It is an easy class if you can keep up with all the reading.
You will have to read A LOT for this class. Prepare to have at least two assignments a week where each assignment makes you read around 40 pages. Then write a discussion post for each assignment. This class is a heavy load, so keep that in mind with what you pair it with. However, Professor Vogel is caring and dedicated, and I enjoyed the class.
Took his 2010 class as an online course. It wasn't very difficult. He just assigns a discussion and you work on part of your big research paper every week. The work load isn't heavy as long as you just stay on top of homework. He gives good feedback, it tends to take him a little while to respond back on them though. I would take him again.
This has been the best English class that I have ever taken! Each week you are assigned Discussion assignment that correlates to the writing assignment, which makes your overall assignment A LOT easier. At the end of the semester, you are expected to write a 15-page paper, but it is pretty easy because every week you write part of it for discussion
Expect 5+ papers each semester with the final paper being a research paper. Start early on your research paper and you will be fine, do you homework, and you will definitely get an A.
Took him online, so he may be completely different in person. His online class was terrible and had no structure. The course in canvas was messy and not well managed by him. When asking for help with assignments, he was slow to grade assignments and wouldn't answer questions. Avoid like the plague!
Honestly, he's awful. I more than went out of my way to ensure my papers followed his guidelines, but it still was not enough. He is hard to get ahold of, terrible and unclear grader, and very unorganized. The homework load was not too much, but he expected way too much out of a 2010 English class for the final paper. My advice, stay away.
Professor Vogel KNOWS his literature!! If you do the readings and keep up with class discussions I don't know how you could fail. He brings so much background to each story we read, it makes me want to read them again! It's a lot of reading, but it's a literature class!! So plan on 2-3 hours a week on readings and you'll be fine.
This class has been one of my favorites I've taken so far. Professor Vogel is great with giving feedback on assignments and getting back to you with your questions quickly. You only really write one paper, but you focus on small parts and do rough drafts of those small parts throughout the semester, so it takes a while, but it's easy!
You basically spend the whole semester on one research paper, which is nice, but difficult if you procrastinate. Not something you can BS.. takes lots of time and effort throughout the semester. Vogel gives great feedback and is willing to help you with your research and writing! A discussion post each week as well.
This class, while difficult, has really pushed me to be both the best student and the best writer I can be. Professor Vogel gives really good, helpful feedback and is more than willing to work with you if you're putting the effort in. Don't get behind though because the paper you work on all semester takes a LOT of work and research!
Dr. Vogel was a pretty good professor. Online, it's hard to actually know, but his discussions were laid out well and each novel was followed with a written quiz -- very easy to pass as long as you read the novels!
I took Pro. Vogel's class online. I still to this day don't know what he looks like. The only communication I had with him was through the feedback he would leave on my papers, which was quite helpful. The class's difficulty has more to do with the ENGL 2010 course itself. If you struggle with English and writing, then you should do face to face.
Professor Vogel is very friendly and accessible, and I thoroughly enjoyed the selected readings for this class, but his lectures are not very engaging (essentially just recapping our reading for that week) and I felt like I could have skipped class the whole semester and done just as well. There is a huge amount of reading required, but very easy A
Read a chapter/wk from textbook and write on discussion board 2/wk. 2 essays (mid/final) both revised for portfolio. He's a decent grader and gives incredible feedback! He's honest and won't sugarcoat things. Lectures were a little boring unless you participate. Genuinely one of my favorite prof., really wants us to learn and grow. Knowledgeable
British literature after the 1800s made the poetry and prose very clear that he was teaching. He explained each reading piece by piece in class. It really felt like a book club! I would only say that he is a hard grader on the three essays and you do have to read a whole book. Otherwise, he was very organized with the class.
While you can succeed in his classes, he normally gives very vague feedback on papers or relies on peer reviews (which don't help) and he can be a very tough grader. He is accessible and will help if you reach out, but the coursework is very draining and will quickly take away any passion you have for the subject or topic.
This professor was really frustrating. He obviously cares about the material and excited by the topics and knows his stuff, but that doesn't make him a good teacher. There is SO much to do, which would be understandable if this was Harvard, but it's not. The amount of reading and homework is absurd and he doesn't teach, he goes on tangents.
You get a lot of reading assignments, he gives unspecific feedback about papers, and dose not give you enough time for the amount the assignments require.
I took this class online, and ended up having to drop early because the class was becoming too overwhelming. His writing for his online pages is poor and hardly ever concisely describes a point without repeating himself. 70% of the material provided was filler or copied and pasted. Expects 15-25 sources and SLP by week 3 so have paper prepared.
