He did not have a firm grasp of the course material. Marks were curved by a lot.
cannot ask question directly
Took this in Fall '05. His notes (photocopied) are quite clear, if a bit unclear in some respects. Some of what he said didn't gel until I took 462 in Spring '06. Nevertheless he teaches quantum mechanics well, and if you attend lectures & tutorials, plus do the homework, you'll get a decent grade as long as you realize what you made mistakes on.
We haven't had our midterm yet so I can't judge him on hardness, but he is the clearest, most animated prof I have had in Chemisty. I actually don't mind going to lecture, which is saying a lot. He also does cool experiments and really connects with his students. Thumbs up!
Fun, interesting, clear professor that made class fun to go to. He has really good notes but watch out for the exams! They're very long and very tricky. I ran out of time for both the midterm and the final.
Amazingly nice guy, friendly and willing to help. worth going to lecture.
if you can survive chatting with him on the skytrain, you can survive his class
Personally I prefer dr. leach, the other professor who teaches this course. He just seems to "get" the material more and is better at communicating it. But dr. walsby is a pretty nice guy, though he sometimes likes to pick on the dumber students. marks are pretty low so it's good thing he curves.
This teacher has the best notes I have seen so far. His pdf files are complete and not only that, they are legible and understandable. The course itself can be at times hard to understand but Dr. Walsby answers any questions you may have.
Prof Walsby is likely the best chem prof for many. Great guy, helpful, nice, punctual and organized. Notes were excellent, assignments hard but midterm + final very much like the assignments so you could prepare, very human teacher hes not expecting computer like brains from the students. Take this guy if available for lecture hes a very good prof.
amazing prof....take chem 122 with him if you have the chance
Extremely clear, punctual, and good notes. Really good lecturer.
Excellent prof! Made lectures enjoyable, fair exams and good at teaching not just lecturing topics. Overall, great prof.
One of the best profs ever in terms of notes. They were clear, helpful and makes the course understand-able in a glance. Exams were fair except for a tougher final. An interesting and sometimes funny prof. Would recommend taking a course with him.
He was an amazing teacher. He was super clear and answered questions immediately. He also did experiments in class sometimes which was cool and I would definetely recommend this guy to everyone, whether your a chem student or not or even if your taking it as you B-sci course.
My favourite prof, extremely helpful and super nice. I loved coming to this class just because of him
Pretty good prof. Literally tries to make sure every single student in the class knows the material. Tricky exams n very strapped for time...even for the final. All-in-all a cool guy and very helpful
Honestly, I'm the type of student that studies for midterms and finals the day before the exam. Charles Walsby made that very possible for me with his extremely concise but clear lecture notes. His examples in class are very helpful, but I find that I don't really pay much attention in class - probably because the course material is review, though.
Honestly, he is a real nice guy, and very helpful too, probably one of the nicest profs I've met! AND he is VERY smart! But if you're not that good in chem, and are looking for an A, do NOT take his class because his exams are super hard and super long!
He's an awesome prof! His lectures are very detailed and he goes through how to do every type of problem step by step. However, all that is useless because the questions on the final were NOTHING like in the lecture, notes, or textbook. I am usually an "A" student in chem and thought I knew everything, but his final whooped my ass. Be warned.
Best prof ever! keeps lectures entertaining, and notes crystal clear. He goes through everything in detail with examples, and lets you know which questions will be on the exams. The midterm was alright...but not so much for the final! Plus he makes sure every single student comes to his office hours to see where they went wrong on the midterm:)
Walsby is the best professor I have had at SFU thus far. First year students - yes he's better than Justin Gray. He's extremely friendly, makes it really easy to understand, and if you understood the material his exams weren't hard. I hope this guy teaches second year chem because 122 was an easy A!!
One of the greatest profs to ever exist. Very funny and very informative lectures
Great prof at explaining concepts and notes. Pretty hard exam in terms of how long it is (which was very long), some tricky questions but overall straight-forward, very kind and willing to help which was great.
Great Prof. Course wasn't that hard anyways but his lectures were very clear nonetheless. The final exam was harder than expected. Need to study. Do loncapa questions, the questions aren't hard at all so it's a 15% to get.
He is a great professor. I loved going to his classes. Just do most of the examples at the end of each chapter and you will do fine on his exams.
Teaching quality is very good. Mid, finals and assignments are very challenging.
Definitely one of the nicest profs I had this semester. He has a pleasant personality and is extremely helpful whenever you need clarification. I would definitely recommend his class!
One of the best profs I've had at SFU so far. Super informative and helpful, except in office hours. He is condescending and MEAN. I went twice and regretted it both times, he left me feeling stupid and angry. Don't go to his office hours unless you want to lose confidence (especially right before the final like I did).
Everything top notch. Clear concise lecture notes. Everything's great except the grading scale. Make sure you get a good mark on LONCAPA and midterm or there's a good chance to fail the course because of final. He did however provided practice questions beforehand that were similar to the final. :D
Such a great professor. His lectures are clear and fair, he is extremely available for help if anyone need it, and he's hot. One of my favourite profs ever.
Super nice and helpful during office hours, and really clears up any difficulties you may have had. Doesn't make you memorize any equations which is nice and he makes the class interesting. Would recommend him!
Charles Walsby is an amazing professor. His lecture notes are very clear and he goes through many useful examples in class. I highly recommend taking Chem122 with him.
Super great guy! Keep up with the readings, loncapa helps a bit too.
Hard exams. Very helpful and nice fellow. Gives every equation there is which is extremely helpful.
Charles is an absolute sweetheart. He answers any of your questions during office hours and makes sure you understand it. He cares about his students' success and focus on his tutorials and in class examples if you want to excel. Tests are tough but doable. He's one of the best chem prof at SFU ever.
One of the best chemistry profs at SFU. Always encourages students to use his office hours(mentions it like every class). Provides every equation you'll need so there is no need for memorizing them. Very clear explanations. Provides many examples of problems you'll see on tests. Exams are pretty tough. Make sure you keep up with the material!
If you need to take CHEM 122 take it with Walsby. He's the kind of guy who's always there to help you out and wants to make sure you do well. He respects all questions, answers emails, and is generally a great guy. I enjoyed my chem class because of him.
Amazing professor!
He is a really great professor. Doesn't go through the material fast no matter how behind we are in schedule. His midterm is easy. Make sure you study hard, and score high on that because his final was hard. For the midterm, go through the examples he did in class and in tutorial.
He is a very organised, very good professor. He is helpful and is there to support you in your learning. He only asks questions worth 1 or 1.5 marks so be prepared for short sharp answers. Hates MCQ's. Difficult class, but at least I actually learnt something in the end.
Although it's his first time to teach the course, he communicates materials quite well, and always there for extra help even during the reading break. Midterm is reasonable and not suprising, and focus on understanding rather than remembering. Definitely will take further courses with him
The reason you won't pass if you skip class is because he explains the lectures so simply and easy for students to understand. As he teaches, he informs which lecture slides to ignore. Also, I really like how he is all about comprehending the material rather than memorizing formulas.
Very passionate About chemistry. I am not a guy who interested in physical chem , but Charles makes it fun to learn
He is a great prof! Always enthusiastic and approachable for help. He also tries to condense the information as much as possible so that you can understand some complex problems.
best prof out there
He's got a pretty high rating on here and he 300% deserves it. He's a GREAT prof in every way tbh. Explains things well, approachable, gives enough practice material and cracks a few jokes here and there lol. If you have the chance to take his class, DO IT.
Great prof! Truly unlike others
Best chemistry prof I've ever had. Go to lecture and take notes, he knows the subject is difficult and does his absolute best to make it understandable.
A true gem of a prof. He genuinely cares and makes his notes clear and course requirements clear. The final was rough but he's a great prof that really wants his students to succeed! He makes tons of practice questions before the midterm and the final which is super helpful.
Amazing prof! Lectures are concise but to the point, does good job explaining how to solve problems and concepts. Provides lots of example questions in lecture and on canvas and practice test which are helpful in preparing for the exam. Even tutorial material provided is helpful and relevant for studying. Just keep practicing to do good.
Amazing professor who can deliver information with concision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth.
Lectures are crucial to this course. He is engaging and a good lecturer. The lecture slides are very useful, and I would recommend looking over them constantly throughout the course. He is quite accommodating, fair, and nice. I found the exam and the coursework very difficult and had to put in a ton of effort for a mediocre grade.
The best lecturer Ive ever had, its seriously insane. Hes kind and understanding I cannot stress to you how amazing of a prof he is, his notes are incredible and I actually enjoyed coming to chem class. He goes above and beyond any other prof, during midterms he made 8 extra office hours. He 100% deserves all the praise he gets this mans a god.
Professor Walsby is absolutely amazing. His lectures are easy to follow, he makes sure his students actually understand, super accommodating, super approachable and overall just a really nice caring guy. Really goes out of his way for his students, to the point of creating personalised question banks. First time I've enjoyed chem in awhile tbh
Best professor
He is one of the best profs. He is an amazing lecturer and his exams were fair with fair grading schemes. He is hilarious. and the homework was very helpful.
Walsby really cares about his students and it shows in the times he puts into having extra office hours and help sessions.
His lectures were clear and straight forward and the exams were on exactly what we learned. Lectures could be a bit boring at times, but that's the materials fault not Dr. Walsbys. Great prof, would love to have him again.
Great teacher but challenging course. Lectures were not recorded and filled notes weren't posted so attendance is necessary. Very easy to fall behind because you are only marked by Lon Capa assignments (every few weeks) and exams. Tutorials are optional as well.
Amazing prof who really wants everyone to do well. Going to lectures is a must because topics go by really fast and notes aren't available online. The grading is difficult because 60-70% of your mark is based on the final. MAKE SURE you study the lon-capa's for the exams!
Definitely a great prof! He was always happy to answer questions and really wanted us to succeed. Tutorials and LON-CAPA helped with midterm/final, and the exams were pretty hard, so do lots of practice questions. Lectures were boring sometimes but that's not rly his fault
Great guy and an amazing lecturer. Almost all of our grade was our final so you definitely have to make it count but it was really reasonable. Love his accent as well.
Great prof. Easy to listen to, good lectures, great person. He really encourages questions which is nice, it shows that he truly is passionate about his career and teaching us students. Totally recommend taking one of his courses, you won't regret it!
If you need to take a Chem class, do yourself a favour and take it with him. I cannot say enough good things about him and his teaching style.
Somewhat easy to understand. Very accommodating and nice. Answers quite simply, similarly to Professor Warren.
we need more teachers like him. He gets it.
By far the best scientific lecturer I have had at SFU. Chemistry is not an easy subject, but he does a great job of explaining scientific concepts in lectures to generate understanding. Come to all lectures, take good notes (dont just copy everything he writes) and do all practice problems for tests and you will pass easily.
He was literally the best prof I've ever had at sfu. Lectures didn't put me to sleep, his voice is always bright and he's interested in what he teaches, making him approachable. Go to tutorials it really helps.
Loved his lectures. He made the course content easy to understand, and each calculation was laid out step by step. He was super clear about what was going to be on the exam and gave us tons of practice questions, too (with written solutions). He's a super nice guy, would recommend taking this course with him.
He's an amazing prof and I'd recommend taking any course with him. His lectures are well structured and his teaching is clear. He encourages students to send him emails and ask questions. The course is tough but he provides tons of practice examples and tips to prepare for exams. It's very exam heavy. Definitely attend tutorials and office hours.
70% final is nasty work but he gives a lot of practice questions for both the final and midterm and he's generous with loncapa tries. Nice guy
Amazing prof, so sweet with clear criteria.
I would honestly recommend dr. walsby because he really goes into detail on what to study and whats on exams. 60-70% final is insane though but to be honest not that bad. all around good prof!
i was genuinely enchanted by walsby every lecture, it was not a waste of time to go. attending tutorials as well was helpful as he provides a worksheet to the tas for you to run through. the course was more than fair and he is a natural teacher with a great sense of humour and quick to answer emails.
Dr. Walsby is a chill prof. He was very helpful for seeking some advice and help after the midterm, and of course, the final was worth a bit too much for my liking...but in the end his lessons were clear, and he does a lot of examples during lectures. An overall helpful prof who is ready to help his students.
The professor is nice and he does a lot of practice questions in class. But the midterm and final were really hard and were really different from the practice questions he did and the practice exams he provided.
Genuinely a super nice guy and cares about his students. The only problem was that he graded everyone based on the midterm, final and homework so everything wasn't very balanced. Other than that, I would highly recommend this prof
Dr. Walsby is an amazing prof, clearly cares a lot for his students. This course is a little dry and very math heavy, but he makes it tolerable. Grade is almost solely based off the final. Averages were quite low, but ended up being scaled about 2 letter grades. Lectures end in early November which was helpful for other courses.
Dr. Walsby is a super caring and friendly person and was a lovely prof. During office hours, he made sure to answer everyone's questions before he left and was very helpful answering questions. only downside was that your grade relies heavily on the midterm and final. Also I loved his accent; it made lectures so much better.
He was a sweet guy but sucked at teaching thermochem, I crashed out a few hours before the final because his thermochem question made no sense and at some point he didn't know what he was talking about in his office hour before the exam. Sweet guy tho.
He was a very sweet guy and had a lot of office hours. But his practice questions and what he told us to study was not accurate, the midterm and final was really difficult. The grading scheme also wasn't the best because we only had a midterm and a final.
Good prof at helping outside class, however very tough marker, and only two pieces of assessment that were very dense and did not have enough time.
Listen, he is super sweet and seems to understand students' struggles, but I feel like he only teaches surface-level content, and the exams cover so much more. I do struggle in chem and felt like he could have let us know a bit more, especially since this class is so exam-based.
Chem 122 is arguably a math heavy course. Dr. Walsby genuinely cares about his students. The key is, to keep up with the material EVERY DAY, do the homework, attend tutorials (they help a lot), and simply understand the meaning behind what you're being taught, because if you do so, you're in good shape..
Such a good prof and genuinely cares about the students. If you understand the lectures, attend tutorials, and do some of the practice problems, you'll do great in the midterm and final! He scales a ton too
Amazing prof. Would highly recommend if chem is not your strong suit (like me). His lectures were really helpful. He gave a lot of practice, however, that practice did not match the difficulty of the midterm or final. I would recommend practicing a lot because the midterm and final are hard, but he remains a great prof nonetheless.
Great professor his lectures were straightforward and helpful. He provides lots of practice for the midterm and final so if you do the practice problems and understand the concepts you should be set. However they don't match the same level of difficulty.
As someone who failed Chem 121, I found Chem 122 way better as a course. The lecture slides are clear and full of practice and example problems. Professor Walsby is easy to approach for questions and keeps lectures engaging. The only downside to this course is how test-heavy the course is, but it is manageable if you go to class and practice.
Great style of teaching. Is very clear of what he expects students to know, and does his very best to help us learn. Is extremely approachable, and very clear lecture slides. Exam was very doable, and all questions were expected. Occasional in-lecture demos as well, which were cool.
By far my favourite class I have taken, the best lecturer I have had in terms of going slow and really breaking down the different problems you can encounter. Tutorials are not mandatory which is nice, I did not go once and ended up with an A+, my tip is to do almost all of if not all of the practice m/c questions he posts, and go to lecture!
lecs were amazing & engaging, he was okay at explaining topics and make sure u get the textbook to fully understand material. study for the midterm and final at LEAST 3 weeks in advance. exams are quite different from practice but a pro is he has a lovely kiwi accent and hes silver fox af
One of the best profs I've ever encountered. He truly cares about his students and his lectures are amazing. Attendance isn't mandatory but I encourage to attend because his lecture are very useful. His exam are very similar to his practices. The course isn't easy but if you put in enough work to follow you will do good!
Good teacher, but the lectures on thermochem went through one ear and out the other. Thankfully, you don't have to *understand* thermochem to get all the questions right.
