wasnt in the class for long becuase of the requirements just to attempt for an A in the class. im unsure of her clarity or helpfulness
Hella hard class! You will have to work your but off to do well in the class. Test are a beast and shes a hard grader on papers. I would take another teacher if I were you, unless you really like Hum. You have to write reading responses veryday that add to the load. Beware of you dare!
I don't know what the other reviewers were thinking because this class was incredibly easy! The syllabus looks very intimidating, but you really don't have to do all the reading and can still get by. The tests were very easy. She is also a very easy grader.
I hated this class! I don't mind humanities, but I did not like the teacher at all. It felt like a high school class. She has a seating chart, takes attendance everyday, counts you if your tardy, gives you a grade for raising your hand and participating. It was ridiculous. Plus I felt like all I did was busy work. I'd take a different professor!
enthusiastic, but corny. i don't really like humanities and she didnt make me like it anymore or dislike it anymore... the class is a little obnoxious becuase it requires a good amount of reading and the tests include nothing but memorization, so if you liek to memorize and you like teachers who treat you like middle schoolers, go for it.
What a jerk. I couldn't stand her. The class wasn't overally hard, but she is Professor Umbridge's twin.
The tests are impossible-pure memorization. It requires a good amount of work. She's also a hard grader on papers. Although there is a lot of reading, you can get by without it. Her lectures aren't too informative and she just basically repeats students comments. Although the class isn't that hard with effort, tests are terrible.
She was really into the subject matter, and I did learn a lot. If you don't like essays, DO NOT take this class. She is VERY picky in her grading, too. Add to that daily reading responses, and the workload really starts to get heavy. Wouldn't take from her again just because of the workload.
When I took this class, students were graded on the comments they made in class to force to force participation. The TA would sit there and put tallies next to students' names after they made a comment. Plenty of reading, but the tests are very straightforward; it's just a matter of memorizing a ton of stuff that no one cares about.
What an awful class. Difficult tests and you feel like you're in 7th grade again. Writing repsonses almost nightly and because students are required to participate you get a lot of useless comments that don't help anybody. Take another class!
I EASILY got an A in this class. There are nightly reading responses, but she grades them easy and SparkNotes is a great reference. About the participation: you only have to participate 10 times the ENTIRE semester (just raise your hand and say something). Tests were VERY easy, you do have to memorize stuff, but that's the nature of the class.
I really enjoyed the class.I like learning about other cultures and their art.She did take roll and was a hard grader. The tests were pretty hard because we had to memorize a lot of images and write essays. We only had to write one research paper and another paper about architecture.I loved her stories and the way she presented the stuff though.
I had her as a Humaniteis teacher. She definitely loves what she teaches. A lot of information is given in class, lots of notes. reading assignments at least 3 times a week that we had to submit responses online which would be graded. we learned by looking at a lot of pictures, but you still had to memorize lots of historical facts and dates.
Nice lady, dumb class. She definitely loves humanities...She assigns a lot of reading, but I never did it after the first test. To get an A, all you need to do is memorize the works and terms flashcards, and know how to BS. She likes cheesy, shmultzy kindof answers and papers. She's helpful and nice though
Raters, chill out! This class was interesting and very helpful, and Professor Stanford really knows what she's talking about. You have to work hard to get an A on this class, but she has a lot of cool pictures and discussions to get you interested in the material, though I did not agree with some of her viewpoints. Professor Umbridge my boot.
The class seems to have a lot of work, but dont let that scare you away. An A is very possible. The reading responses are on Sparknotes. The test are simply memorizing the works and terms. Prof. Stanford is very nice and always willing to help. You do have to attend class for participation points. Just memorize the works and terms and ace the test.
Took the class last summer - although she didn't grade for reading or participation, she still drove me crazy - other students in the class agreed with me. A good grade is possible, but there were a lot of ridiculous assignments, and it really did feel like high school. Just... take it from someone else.
This was a fun class usually. The grading was fair. I didn't particularly like her teaching style, and sometimes it seemed like she was making things up, but overall it was good.
She is a happy teacher and made the subject more interesting than my past teachers. The text book reading is pointless if you can BS on essays. Her lectures are informative though and are well worth attending. The exams are hard but fair; she gives you a good study guide. Know significant features of the art, artist, and time period to do well.
The class isn't too difficult. I took it summer term so it seemed like a lot of work but it was just 3 exams, that included the final and 2 papers that were 3-5 pages each. Im interested in art and stuff but I am a CM major so it was kind of like pulling teeth. She seems kind of feminist near the end of class when you read A Dolls House. Overall B
She knows how to make the history behind the works interesting and accessible. The class is very organized. All the due dates are listed from the first day. Her tests are difficult, but fair and straight forward. Her lists of terms/study guide makes studying for them clear. I was never tested on anything that wasn't on the study guide.
She is so passionate about Humanities. Class is so interesting. Plus, her tests are incredible. She tells you what to study. There are quite a few tests, but they are spread out so there isn't too much material to handle at one time.
This class was interesting. I was nervous about how much work was going to be required, but learned quickly to know everything on the study guide to do okay. Studied for 3-4 hours for exams. A is attainable, especially if you talk to her and get help from her and the TA.
She is such a sweetheart. She is very smart. Her slideshows are so awesome. She has traveled to all the places she talks about in the class. Actually, she took the pics for her slides most of the time. The class requires work but it's interesting. She is passionate about her class too.
I really enjoyed Standford's class. As long as you attend and pay attention in class, an A is attainable if you are willing to work. She is so fun and enthusiastic, I've learned to love Humanities! Very interesting material, I would definitely recommend her!
Dr. Stanford has a lot of excitement for humanities, which is fun for the first few weeks, but then it just gets worse and worse. She asks questions which mock student's intelligence. She makes no effort to get to know students and is not willing to help even if you go to her office hours. Tests are ridiculously hard and tricky. Run away now.
I don't know why people have given bad reviews; possibly they didn't study the thorough, straightforward study guides and now are mad about their grades? Easy class. Study the study guide. Do your reading/essays, you should get a good grade. She's also super sweet and excited about Humanities. No complaints, except it is hard to stay awake at times
There is a big work load and requires a good amount of time. The class is fair and prof. Stanford is very passionate about what she teaches. The tests definitely require studying- but they are manageable.
This class isn't easy, but it isn't hard. If you want an A it'll require lots of effort, but a B doesn't require too too much. Study for tests & know the definitions on the works/terms list & if you paid attention in class you'll do well. Six 2-3 pg papers on long readings. But everything else is pretty easy. Shes a good teacher, kind & reasonable.
I really enjoyed this class! Prof. Stanford does a wonderful job of teaching. It does take some studying and memorization, but an A is definitely attainable. She presents the material in a very clear, interesting way. Also, she has very helpful study guides for the tests. I would definitely recommend taking from her!
Took this Winter of 2012. There is a ton of reading for each class and a lot of one page, single space papers. If you're not on her good side you'll struggle immensely throughout the class. Not a good teacher to work with. It's like high school all over again. Take this from someone else. Your GPA with thank you later.
I cannot imagine a teacher that conflicts with my personality more. If you LOVE humanities, and you LOVE strict, uptight classrooms, take HUM201 from Stanford. If your a normal, fun loving student looking to enjoy al 24 hours of your day, avoid this class.
Wow how can people be so mean? Yes, she is over weight but that has nothing to do with her performance. I very much enjoyed her class, and if you pay attention, participate, and study you will get an A. If you sleep in class, don't whine when you get a crappy grade.
This class was really easy as long as you were in class. Pay close attention to wording on tests. Dr. Stanford's questions are occasionally not overly clear, and she makes no apology for that.
This class was a bore. She is so hard to listen to, loves the sound of her voice. Write down everything she says in lecture if you want to do well. Never bought the textbooks, waste of money. AVOID if possible. Not too hard if you have to take it.
So I came into this class kind of terrified because of all the things people said on here...And I actually loved it a lot. Sure, it's pretty much lecture based, but I found Professor Stanford really helpful and sweet. She loves humanities! I found the textbook useful for review for tests, but that's it; tests overall were fine. Great class!
Stanford is passionate about humanities. But you HAVE to go to class. A lot of the test comes straight from her lectures, which mostly involves pictures and her talking. Her tests are not easy but once you understand her style, it gets easier. There are a LOT of assignments in this class so if you don't like readingwriting a lot, don't take it.
Class is lecture based. You have to listen to her, not just copy down her slides. You will be expected to know THE DETAILS. I'm not joking about that. On the test you have to know the names of insignificant characters in the many works you HAVE to read- and spell their names correctly. A lot of work. 3 page paper due nearly weekly from reading.
I found this class to be pretty hard. Her lectures are interesting, but her test questions are very specific and can be taken out of the lectures or reading (and there is a LOT of material covered in the reading). She's sweet and I like her, but her tests work you over.
I would have never taken this class had I known how much time I would have to spend for a decent grade. Her 5 tests are so hard and the study guides and lectures are only somewhat helpful. Be ready to study hard.
Tbh, she's hard at first. Decently long reading assignment most weeks with a 2 page paper due on Friday. If you do the reading though, the paper shouldn't take more than an hour or so. Then, there's the textbook reading. Her lectures and tests are all based on the textbook. Read it well and the tests will be fine. And go to the TA class too.
Papers: four 2-pagers, two 4-pagers. Exams: 5. A few other assignments based on reading. Lectures are interesting. She loves the Humanities. Tests are difficult and specific, but doable if you read the textbook and extras, as well as the study guide. Extra credit opportunities available. Overall, a unique and enjoyable class, but takes dedication.
I thought I would be interested in this class because I love architecture, but it was not at all what I expected. She focused greatly on art instead. There was a ton of material and tests were very specific, not much history base at all. The textbook had a lot of unnecessary information compared to the test. Lots of writing, 5 tests.
there are 4 paper 4 presentation 5 exams, a quiz before each class
Ready to prepare for your test? "Anything I covered in lecture, or was covered in the labs, or was in your book is free game for test." Oh wait, not only that but you might want to do some more of your own research on the people from the text. I guess that wouldn't be too bad if every test didn't have an average of 50 people you had to know.
Prof Standford is like a WITCH LADY. She sits up at the front of class smiling at you while telling you that "everything I say and everything from the book and everything your TA says has potential to be on the test." And she's not kidding. Her study guides are SO LENGTHY and they don't even cover everything you're tested on. I found her unfair.
I studied my rear end off trying to get a good grade on her INSANE tests and only ever walked out with a 70 one time. She's fair on the group projects and papers though, surprisingly. She's nice but she'll call you out for whispering for a half a second while she's talking like we are back in junior high again.
I got over 100% in this class. Here's how: Take notes on your COMPUTER so you can type faster. Anything she says, write it down regardless of if you think it's important or not. Use the study guide to study and use the CTRL+F function on your notes to write out as much as you can about each term/person/work. Know at least TWO things about each.
Oh boy. Dr. Stanford as a person is very sweet and a good lady... Her class? Not so much. My absolute least and most unfair GENERAL class I have taken. WAY too much work for a small 3 credit general education class. I would not take again.
This class is just hard. Plain and simple. If you aren't a Humanities Major, watch out. You need to STUDY!!! The tests are hard, yes, but if you put in LOTS of hours studying the material, reading every letter of the textbook, memorizing pictures, art styles, and going to every single class, it's do-able. She is super nice, and very passionate.
She is awesome, very bright. She is also a great human being if you need to talk about your grades or anything. And the class is amazing
Dr. Stanford is a fine teacher. She is very passionate about what she teaches and she makes you love it too. Her teaching on the art and architecture side is very clear, but at times her coverage on the literature and authors is vague. Just study hard for the tests and you'll get a good grade!
Professor stanford is very passionate about these subjects and is a good professor, her classes are simply just hard and work is necessary for this class.
Professor Stanford is a really nice person with a passion for what she teaches. The problem for some is that she expects everyone to share that passion. She assigns a lot of reading has us do group projects, which is okay if you can tolerate the material. Tests include us identifying works (both art and literary) and their defining characteristics
She is so passionate about what she teaches! However, her class is so much busy work and there is no easy way to prepare for the tests. I was lucky enough to walk out of the tests with a 75%.
I got an A in this class and I'm not a Humanities major, nor did I study SUPER hard; I reviewed all her slides (she posts online) and the study guide before each test. LISTEN in her lectures, don't just write what's on the slides. When I'd look around in class, a lot of people weren't paying attention and I guarantee they struggled on the tests.
Stanford is very passionate about Humanities, but she expects all her students to feel the same way... This is a GE class, WE AREN'T GOING TO BE EXCITED ABOUT IT! She doesn't seem to understand that. She makes you study tons of different things, with very little of those things actually being on the test. Hard to get a good grade.
Loved this class so much! Professor Stanford knows what she's talking about--I knew nothing about Medieval lit in general at the beginning but because she (and the other instructors) were so knowledgeable, it was both enjoyable and intellectually stimulating to understand the Middle Ages. She is definitely a tough grader, but you learn soooo much.
Professor Stanford does a good job. The class is pretty dry sometimes and the reading rather lengthy, but Stanford is passionate about the Humanities. She does a great job of showing art that portrays the culture of its time, and making it interesting. However, sometimes it can just be a little dry and she is not to blame. If you need help she will
You are given clear study guides at the beginning of the semester, and they are very similar to the tests. This class does require group work for 4 class projects done in your TA lab. Pretty easy class as long as you go to class and know the study guide.
I really enjoy Professor Stanford's teaching style. The participation tends to come from the lab section, but opportunities are provided in lecture too. She takes time to answer questions. We had about 5 papers to write, but they were short. Group presentations aren't graded harshly-cite your sources. The study guides help a lot with the tests.
Lots of readings, an essay, test or a presentation due at the end of each week for the most part. Once you figure out her teaching style and test format and put in the work, you can get an A. Follow along in the lectures with the study guides and share it in a google doc with other kids in the class. I used spark notes for a lot of the readings.
If you do your work in this class you will get an A. She gave us like 6-7 extra credit opportunities. The class is a lot of reading (if you choose to do so - she has in class quizzes based off reading but they are open partner and you can use the internet). Study guides for every test. Tests seemed hard but then were graded easy.
DO NOT TAKE HUM201 FROM HER! All I can say is in week 4 I had more homework from her than I had in all of my other classes combined up to that point in the semester. She knows what she's talking about, but she is so scatter-brained and gives so much reading that it really isn't worth it. Take this class from someone else.
SO strict on grading papers. One of those people who will mark you down points if she would have preferred a different word even if yours isn't wrong. Grades like a writing class. So much reading it hurts, I spent over 15 hours a week on the class and I'm pretty fast. Refuses to be called anything but Dr. Also, grades didn't come for 5 weeks.
Facts: Short paper or presentation due almost every Friday. 5-6 tests (one per unit plus a comprehensive final). Lots of reading. Everything graded by TAs. Opinion: More work than I was expecting but thanks to a great TA this class was totally doable. Advice: Study with a buddy.
The work load for this class is pretty steady and manageable once you figure out what is expected. 5 group projects, 5 essays (2 pages), and 5 exams but nothing that takes a ton of time. Most of these I would spend a few hours working on and get a good grade. I never did the daily reading, she covers all the information in class.
This class way WAY more work than was necessary to get good grades on the test. Memorize the information for the tests and you will be fine, but that won't work for the other assignments.
I love Dr. Stanford! She loves the humanities and knows what she's talking about. There are 5 group presentations and 5 2-page essays, but they're not hard and help prepare you for the exams. Always a study guide for exams, and the exams aren't bad. EVERY CLASS has a quiz, so you need to go, but the quizzes are open note and open neighbor.
I adore Professor Stanford. This was easily my favorite class for the whole semester. It's important to go to class everyday because there are quizzes, but they're open note. I would usually just google the ones I wasn't sure on. There's also not much homework, just a few papers. I low-key didn't do most of the textbook readings, but I was fine.

Professor Stanford is great. Her class is just way too much work for a GE. There are lots of papers and projects and a TON of reading (especially at the beginning of the semester). The tests are easy if you read and do the study guides. She does give lots of extra credit opportunities so it's easy to get a high grade, just get ready to work.
This has been one of my favorite classes so far. I had no idea Humanities was going to be so broad. Dr. Stanford was especially good at making associations between the various fields within Humanities, from philosophy to architecture to art and literature. Because of her lectures and write-ups, learning such a broad topic was fun and interesting!
She is literally the worst professor I have ever had. Like some of the others have said, the amount of reading you do is ridiculous. The test reviews are broad but the tests are extremely specific and spelling counts. Papers or presentations is what you do 24/7. I felt like she was trying to prove how knowledgeable she was and wanted me to fail.
By far, worst class I've had. You have a paper/group project due almost every Friday (if one's not due, then you're taking a test). The amount of reading you have to do in this class is unbelievable, it's SO MUCH. DO NOT take this class unless you absolutely have to. Honestly, I think this class is harder than Chemistry.
Way to hard for a GE class. Way too much work. Almost 100 pages due every week, with either a paper or a group project due in every recitation. All my chemistry classes combined were easier than this. DO NOT TAKE!!!!
I honestly would never take a class form professor Stanford again . I took this class for a general and it ended up being way more work than any of my other classes combined. You have something due every single week and between papers, group presentations, and tests its hard to keep everything straight. this class is pretty much self taught.
This is the absolute bane of my college existence. I cannot stress how much you should NOT go through this class. About 80% of what's discussed in the lectures (which are mandatory) are completely irrelevant on exams or other homework. Also, get ready for about 1 bad joke each day. Yes, it's bad enough that I have to mention it here.
A lot of people aren't interested in this class because the information is barely used on the test and that's because the test is based on memorization. If you memorize the works and what time period they're from you'll be fine. There are a lot of group projects, essays, etc but they don't make you feel stressed. I hate humanities and got an A.
Too much work for a few GE credits. The professor knows what she's talking about, but almost nothing that she goes over in class will ever appear on an exam. You will also be required to read a lot. This week, we need to report on two 50-page readings, and for this class, that's not out of the ordinary. In short, avoid this course at all costs.
There were five tests, five papers, and five group projects in addition to daily readings and other assignments. I did more work in this class than all of my other classes combined. Dr Stanford really cares about the subjects she teaches but she expects you to know EVERYTHING about everything she talks about.
Don't get me wrong, Stanford is knowledgeable in humanities, but what she teaches hardly has any use. The majority of what she teaches is history, but you're tested on art, its origin, and the countless readings you need to remember, which she doesn't teach. It is very unclear about what will on the exam, even with the study guide.
Professor Stanford is nice and you can tell she loves her job, but her class was rough. She gives study guides but most of the time there's information on the tests you didn't know. She also get behind and she wouldn't cover some material on the test. Lots of group projects and papers in the TA sections too.
Professor Stanford is a very kind and extremely knowledgeable professor. She knows so much about her subject matter! However, she gives a lot of tests and papers that are not easy. You need to be a good writer and a hard worker to get an A in her class.
She cares about her students and is very knowledgeable in her field. She is passionate about her subject, but this tends for her to drift on tangents. Beware that she is the type that doesn't believe in perfect scores such as for essays.
I dont love humanities, but this class was easier than most. Yes there is a lot of reading, but she gives a study guide for each test. Tests are very fair and doable. Everything is organized and very doable. You just need to know the study guide, meaning if you fill out the study guide while reading youll be set and get good grades.
Very clear and direct instructions. Tests are not weighted heavily. 3% of extra credit offered at the end because of easy assignments. Quizzes are open book and tests have clear study guides that give clear expectations. This subject is not my best, but if you can memorize lists of terms then you are golden!
Dr. Stanford is very organized and sets such clear expectations that the only reason you could royally mess up in this class is if you tried to not follow directions and not pay attention. She gives a lot of extra credit opportunities as well! All you have to do is use the study guides that are always available and you'll ace every test!
Interesting course, extra credit saved my butt, easy small assignments that give you easy points, need to read, tests are fair
OH MY GOSH!Stay away from this professor! She doesn't care about you. There are SO many assignments and papers and the reading for a GE class is out of this world! She expects you to know literally every single word from her lectures and the textbook. Her lectures are also super disorganized. Do yourself a favor don't take this class!
Good teacher! I learned a lot from her. There are study guides to help prepare for each exam. She does several group projects/presentations, which I didn't like so much.
Professor Stanford went out of her way to nit pick every little assignment of mine, down to single paragraph response assignments. She marks off points for things she did not include in the assignment details, and refuses to admit when shes wrong. Its a miserable class to begin with, dont make the mistake of having a miserable professor as well.
The amount that you are expected to read and write in this class is ridiculous! I took this class to fulfill my Civ 2 credit and I wish that I had gone another route. Be prepared to read 60+ pages and write your hands off each week. Classes like this give general credit a bad reputation.
If this class were family history, Professor Stanford would assign you to read hundreds of pages about the time period, memorize facial expressions and dates of birth. She would miss the mark behind why they are important and would make you dread every moment. Take this class from another professor that understands how to teach effectively.
Professor Stanford is an extremely hard grader. The course has so many random things that you end up not learning anything from it. The mini lectures are kind of useless and her tests are so exhausting. Her readings are absurd and if you take her class, get ready to read hundreds of pages every week.
I LOVE Professor Stanford! Many people think her class is challenging, but all it takes is effort and a desire to learn. Her course has opened my eyes and helped me feel excited to learn about history! The online setup is clear and organized. The TAs are excellent! There's a lot of reading, but the quizzes were open notes & book, which saved me.
Professor Stanford is an awesome professor and knows her stuff very well. The class is very clearly organized and the TA's are super helpful. However, this class is way too hard for a generals class. There is a TON of reading assigned every week, like entire books sometimes. There is soooo much information covered in a short amount of time.
I'd avoid taking this class from her if you can. She's a nit-picky grader and points in essays are received if one's claim is in line with her (and your TA) opinion. You have to memorize all her ppts (plus the specific quotes found in the text) in order to receive a good grade on the test. Lastly, the TA you are assigned makes or breaks the class.
Professor Stanford was a solid professor. Tons of reading, most of which I didn't do. Most people bombed the first test, but the TA's held very helpful review sessions for the next two tests so everyone scored a lot better. Group projects and papers were easy, the tests just had a ton of breadth to them. Not too hard though.
I was pleasantly surprised with Dr. Stanford's class. The lectures were pretty dry, there was a ton of assigned reading, and the tests tended to be pretty difficult. But the group work gets easy and the essays aren't that challenging if you don't try to cram them in. My TA was phenomenal and she gives plenty of easy extra credit opportunities.
This teacher has too high of expectations. She is passionate about everything she teaches but she expects you to know everything she knows. I took this as a general and regretted it. Tests are impossible, there are 4essays, 4 group projects(all work outside of class), and too many readings. Don't take unless you want to spend 12 hours working /week
It was very hard to start the semester out, but you get the hang of it. She posts a study guide for the tests before starting the unit that you can take notes on throughout the unit. You can tell she loves the arts and the students. Attendance not mandatory, but it adds up to like 10 percent of your grade by the end of semester.
Professor Stanford really cares about the subject, but sometimes the lectures were kind of dull. There are three group projects that you have to do outside of class. The exams tested on tiny details, so make sure you study. Participation and attendance matter.
She knows a lot about every aspect of every topic and it feels like she forgets that we are new to it. She is a very harsh grader and expects a lot from each student, you never catch a break. There are many group projects with huge groups, and you are all graded the same. You can never study enough for the test.
I took this during spring so each class was three hours long. Would not recommend taking as a GE, it is not worth it. The tests were super stressful and the lectures pretty boring.
Way too much work for a GE. Would recommend not doing the readings because you can do just as well without doing the 6 hours of reading assignments a week. Test are ridiculously difficult, and I am a 3.9 GPA senior. Boring lecture every class and nothing ever but lecture.
Professor doesn't prepare you for tests. They are passionate about the subject but not good at teaching the material. Really no point in going to lectures, and study guides are misleading. Had to stay in the textbook for everything
CRASH OUT OF THE CENTURY was had bcs of this class. Studying for the 1st exam, one could say I observed similar behavior as someone coming out of anesthesia. It's impossible to know everything on the test. very boring. 3 group projects/3 assignments outside of class. Take it from another professor or DROP. At the end u live and trauma block it all
