Boring lectures, then again I didn't like the subject. She's great though.
learned material interesting...lectures boring..she's tries her best..not bad
Funny and interesting. Knows her material. Nice hair.
She's really nice...tries to make the class interesting...hard to stay awake

She's really nice; kinda funny sometimes;knows her stuff
she's wonderful, cheerful and always tries to make learning fun!
Love her! She is a goof ball which makes class interesting. Very clear speaker.
Funny and nice, detailed lectures. But talks a little fast.
Funny, lectures boring though, really knows her stuff. Hard to stay awake, but I'm there for the candy to make us feel better!
Very supportive, very nice, very knowledgeable.
helpful and easy prof.
Very nice. Wants students to do well.
lectures were organized but most of the information can be taken directly from your textbook. you can tell that teaching greek and roman art is not her specialty.
She's nice and helpful. Midterms are straightforward and are flexible in question choice and response.
I love going to this class. She is a great teacher and extremely helpful outside of class.
She's a great prof. She's friendly and wants her students to do well. Her midterms gives the student some flexibility with regards to question choice for the SAQ and Essay Q.
very nice + helpful prof! she's just great! it's the first time I ever seen students give a prof presents on the last day of class!
When a student asks her an interesting question, she inevitably replies, "Hmmm...I don't really know!" Easy class but she marks stingy-ly. All her lecture material is from the text. I went to get inspired but the class just ended up being xtreme
she thinks very highly of a relatively simple class. what you think is really easy she marks rather severly. The highlight of the class' simplicity was the final exam essay question "if you could be a roman women who would you be and why?"
Seems to mark very hard for simple, easy questions. She always says "Hmm..I don't know" when someone raises a good question. Seems to me she doesn't know too many things to be teaching this class. No interesting insights.
no, i actually think that she doesn't want her students to do well...expect to get B-, B or a B+
I had Lyn Rae for Latin 100 and her style of teaching suits the language. Charmaine Gorrie's does NOT. She has to look things up way too often, says "I don't know" when asked questions, and has been corrected by students.
Very lazy. Teaches at a quick pace without bothering to give examples. Skived off teaching us to attend a lecture SHE was interested in. Makes no sense and always looks in her books for answers. Incompetent! Why is she teaching 200?? Now I HATE La
Not bad. She might get confusing but it is 200 level. She is really easygoing with homework and lets you hand it in whenever. Sometimes it seems she doesn't really challenge the class. But she is a nice prof, just really laid back which might get interpreted as laziness?
She is very easygoing but marks so hard for everything and doesnt seem to know a lot of stuff! Classes are interesting but its not worth it if the tests are all bull
She's friendly and approachable. Very relaxed about homework (let you hand in at a convenient time). Might not be the most organized teacher but I like her laid back style of teaching. She treats students like adults rather than children. You've got to be self-motivated & study by yourself though.
Her exams are super easy but she marks rather hard. She's really laid back and a nice person but as a prof. her expectations are unclear. You'll think you did excellent on an exam and be disappointed when you receive your mark.
I had Charmaine for 3 classes. She was great. Gave me great recommendations for Grad school. She is friendly and fun. Always brings the class candy on holidays. Roman women was a great class. (if you are a guy its a great place to meet girls since its 90% women). A little disorganized especially for classes which require class presentations.
I love this prof for one major reason: she actually makes marking a priority, you'll get your homework back the next class and midterms within a week. She's also very good about homework extensions.
It's archaeology- an interpretive science of incomplete information. Of COURSE there are questions to which one would reasonably reply "I don't know." Good for her for saying it- did you want her to teach you to THINK or want her to do all the thinking for you?
Very lively, fun woman. Efficient with returning assignments.
I love Dr Gorrie.. she wrote my dental school application too WOOT! awesome teacher, made latin hella fun, super super nice.
classical studies and latin. can any prof on the planet be funnier than she is?
Very nice lady. Tries to get discussions going but sometimes the class just does not respond. Does favor past students. Is SLOW in getting back marked assignments! It was an okay, enjoyable class. Nothing spectatcular.
Nice person, but marks are somewhat biased. Doesn't seem to understand when students ask a question and ends up rephrasing it.
Marking expectations are unclear - for someone who comes across as being kind of flake, she marks fairly hard. Her lectures always had an "Is this what this is trying to saying? I don't know, maybe?" kind of feel, and she tries (and fails) to make "cool" pop culture references. My class was full of feminists who just ate her up. Blah.
Great prof overall. Really funny in a teachery-cheesy sort of way, breaks up the monotony of the lecture. Makes the material seem interesting, and is really enthusiastic about what she's teaching. A little unclear about expectations when it comes to exams and assignments though. Otherwise, keeps things interesting, I love the class.
Absolutely outstanding prof!! Extremely clear on how she marks the material. I was lucky enough to be taught two years by her. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this prof! She's awesome!
Goes through a lot of material during class but then fails to distinguish the most important ones... or in the case of pottery style (of which there are MANY), makes them all important. this makes it hard to study for the slide tests as it seems you need to know EVERYTHING. also, hard marker but vague in her class commentary.
Overall she does a good job at explaining the material- at times she can be a bit confusing but fortunately the text book is fairly clear. Class is definatly a lot of work (mostly the nature of the subject) Weekly pop quizzes, along with 6 longer "quizzes". Don't take the class unless you have a lot of time to devote to it- lots of vocab!!
The material that she covers in class is quite a lot and if you want to do well in her class, you really kind of HAVE to know EVERYTHING (pottery, statues, temples, etc...). Although she a nice professor, she marks quite tough especially on dates!
I love Charmaine. There I said it. She might not be an expert in Latin, but that's good because she knows what's difficult, and how to make it easy to learn. Would've loved to take classical studies with her, I think that's her real field of expertise. Super approachable, fun, easy grader, just go to class and you'll do fine.
She made the class so easy to go through. She had helpful powerpoints and gave lots of information when you needed it. You will immediately feel how warm a demeanor she has and how helpful she can be. I just can't explain how nice she was. She genuinely wants her students to succeed.
Great!! Love, love, love her! So funny and approachable and willing to help out in any situation. Very kind and understanding! Take classes from her, you won't be disappointed.
I have taken many courses with her. And I love love LOVE her. She is probably my favorite professor at UBC. She is so helpful and always accommodating. Tests can be hard, and usually time constraining, but I think thats a Latin thing....
She likes her subject, which is nice, but her grading is BEYOND tough. You need to have a photographic memory to remember every little detail about her lectures because even though the exam questions aren't that specific, she marks you down for leaving ANYTHING out. Considering the vagueness of lectures, be forewarned!
I've had Dr. Gorrie for three classes. She's a super tough marker, but the material is interesting and lectures are entertaining and enjoyable enough that it's worth it. Although it's challenging to get a high mark, I'll continue to take courses with her.
Wonderful Latin teacher. Always clear, willing to help and knows her stuff. Accepts mistakes when she makes them and does her best to accommodate every student. And she has a sense of humor!
-No attendance but every single class was important(took it in summer 6 credits). -One of the nicest profs you can find, always smiling and joking, even gives out candies after every exams. -the content is hard because of diff. forms of words but she made this class so interesting that you will do really well if u attend every class!
Enthusiastic, cheerful, friendly, sincere, and always available to give extra help! Material is tough (pure memorization unless you're familiar with Romance languages) but grades are fair - willing to make compromises as long you demonstrate you're going to put in the effort. Would love to have as a prof. again!
Charmaine Gorrie is a nice professor, without a doubt, but what is strange is her marking scheme; I find that she deducts marks rather than gives them out. I have taken numerous classes with her and have never achieved an A- TBH; if you are looking to boost or average out your GPA in the 3.64-4.0 range, then this is not a class for you.
Gorrie is an amazing teacher! She is so passionate about what she teaches and really makes the course super interesting (as if it's not already). If you put in enough effort, you'll get the grade you want. She's super nice!
Very supportive, easy to talk to, extra resources given.
Professor Gorrie is an amazing teacher. She is always clear in what she says and the classroom environment with her is great. Her quizzes are easy and not tough and the midterms are good. This was my first time taking Latin and because of this prof I would definetely take it again.
Exceptional professor, very helpful if not the most helpful teacher. Always there to answer every question. Course is not easy, but listening to her lectures it is definitely beneficial to passing the course.
Charmaine is an angel and is hilarious in her lectures. She is so passionate about her teaching. Latin is NOT an easy language even w/o an oral portion-you have to REVIEW, REVIEW, REVIEW. Slip behind and it will be hell. She's there for her students and supports them all the way. Inspired me to take LATN 102 with her despite its difficulty.
One of the most useless classes Ive ever taken. Gorrie expects you to know very specific, random facts from the lectures and sourcebook. Assignments are extremely detail oriented and completely irrelevant to university education. Lectures are unbearable, since she reads off of a piece of paper. Wish I dropped this class. Would never recommend.
Gorrie was an absolute amazing professor! Her lectures were very well organized - there were vocab and grammar quizes every other week to make sure everyone stayed on top of their learning, which was extremely helpful. Her explanations were easy to understand, she cared very much about her students and also introduced us to the fun parts of Latin.
I loved Dr. Gorrie. She was very caring and understanding. Her lectures caught the gist of the textbook and she often gave advice about tests/quizzes. Show up to the lectures, study for the tests/quizzes, and you will get an easy A/A+.
Dr. Gorrie is AMAZING! Her style of teaching is so helpful, and she is super clear with what you're expected to know and how you'll be tested. She does lots of in-class practice and give regular homework to help make sure you're keeping on top of all the vocab and grammar. If you get the chance, I 100% would recommend taking this course with her!
Very nice professor. Provide enough material and practices for me to train my Latin. Grade is fair and kind. Willing to take another course of her.
I dont know many professors like Dr. Gorrie. She offers one-to-one help during her office hours, these sessions are much akin to a session of tutoring (did I mention they are free and extremely helpful?). Although I did not do well in her class due to external circumstances affecting my grades that semester, I still recommend this professor.
CLST 260 with her was interesting, but her slides were horrible/ they barely had any information at all; there would only be a few key words/sentences on each slide, and she would just talk about each one as she read off of a piece of paper. If you don't take HEAVY notes you won't do well cause there's no information. + the exam structure is whack.
Charmaine was super caring towards her students and allowed extensions on deadlines. There is hmwk for every week but it's not bad. Some of her classes can be a bit boring because it's just reading straight out of the textbook, but this class is an easy A if you work for it. Definitely would take this class again with her.
I had Dr. Gorrie for the first time during COVID, and she was super nice and explained things very thoroughly. Something I appreciated is that you can take the Canvas quizzes as many times as you want and there's no time limit. Overall I really liked this course and would definitely take her as a prof again!
Professor Gorrie is by far one of the most clear instructors I've had. Her lectures as well as the textbook outline clearly what you need to know. I also really appreciated all the extra practice work and how organized her online platform was during Covid. She makes Latin interesting and understandable. I recommend this class for anyone interested.
Simply the best. Highly recommended taking this class.
I really enjoyed her lectures, they were very entertaining and I was never bored. She also only assigned discussion boards and one project which were all super easy. I highly recommend her CLST 260 and hope I get to take another one of her courses in the future!
One of the most understanding professors. If you go to class and do the assignments, you will get an A. It was a pleasure taking her class.
Really great professor. Was not too interested in Latin but she made it bearable. Definitely recommended.
if you plan on skipping lectures, please dont take her classes. she is a great prof and very knowledgable, but lord god her slides are horrendous. there is absolutely no information on there as she reads them out in class. pretty slow on returning assignments but other than that, shes a really nice prof.
While she is a very caring professor, her slides have no words, so attendance is mandatory to do well in this course and you will have to write down every word she says. Takes forever to mark assignments. The midterm was comprised of material barely touched upon in class and expects you to memorize the smallest details mentioned in passing.
You have to attend all the lectures if you want to do well in the class, but it is interesting and possible to do decent if you miss some classes. Assignments are pretty chill - discussion boards and paper are fun. I appreciate that she made the final online when it was so late in the exam period. Midterm could be tricky if you skip class tho.
Super nice and knowledgeable. Lectures are not recorded, and the slides have nothing but pictures. You have to attend lectures to be able to study and do well on the papers which require you memorize a lot and include as much info from lectures as you can. Grading was okay-ish, though I think the TA's did it. NOT a grade booster. Average was 74%
I really enjoyed this course, the prof was really understanding. She's pretty good at making sure you understand the material before you move on - frequent vocab quizzes, etc. and assignments were pretty chill. She doesn't take attendance, but it's hard to make up for missed classes through the slides alone (she tends to change/move things around).
The professor is nice and understanding. Her lectures are easy to understand and test were all course-related materials. You will receive a good grade if you study all the vocab, practice questions and study slides. If having interest in Latin, this is a good course to take for beginners. If no interest, don't take it for credit.
Professor Gorrie is knowledgeable, engaging, and caring. I get the sense that she is passionate about her subject and is genuinely there to help you learn. I loved the content and the teaching in AMNE 225 (Spectacles in Ancient Greece and Rome), and plan on taking more of her classes in the future.
One of my favourite professors so far at UBC. She is very nice and caring with well-prepared lectures and an organized course schedule guiding students through the language of Latin.
My 2nd course with this prof, I love her lol. She has an old-school approach to teaching: lectures aren't recorded, and class participation is just done verbally by raising your hand. Her slides are minimal, so although she posts them, they aren't helpful if you don't have the notes already. Readings are optional. Weird class, chill prof :)
Dr. Gorrie is awesome. She is very caring and clearly loves the subject she teaches. Her lectures were helpful, so go to class when you can because it makes the course much easier overall. If you follow her advice, ask for help and put in the work, then you'll do great in this course.
Very effective lecturer; always gives ample ungraded practices to drill grammatical concepts. You do need to memorize words, but is completely doable. Always gives funny context/history of Rome, which makes the lecture more engaging.
Dr. Gorrie is the kindest professor I've had so far. Once, I could not write a grammar quiz because I was ill and after emailing her, she offered to have me come to her office and write it on the Friday of that week (it was not during her office hours). She's the absolute sweetest.
Professor Gorrie is the best! Had her for LATN 101 and now 102. She's so sweet and understanding, makes sure you understand the content, and is super fair and communicative on all assignments. All necessary content is posted in the slides. I hope she keeps teaching for a few more years. If you have the opportunity to take Latin with her, do it!
content was super interesting and prof was very nice, but does not prepare you well for exams. gives too many questions to complete within alotted time and has very big expectations on knowing dates and specific irrelevant characters in history.
