She often uses examples and current events to discuss topics. The class consisted of a term paper, two midterms, media presentation, attendanceparticipation and a final. She uses powerpoint to teach but doesn't post it online. It is a must to use and read the textbook to get a good grade. She pulls things right out of the book. Read it carefully.
Prepares you for upper level courses, expects a lot from her students, well respected by students, very helpful and kind--but you have to put in effort or she won't. HARD marker. 1 paper-5 pages, worth 20 %, 2 tests-2 hours-worth 20 % each, 5 minute presentation 10 % and 1 final exam-3 hours worth 20%. Participation and attendance10 %.
Not nice and doesnt seem to like teaching or students. Difficult to approach. Is condescending and rude but that could be because she doesn't seem to want to be there.
I would not take this professor again. She is rude and condescending. What should have been a fun class to take was made to be dry and boring instead.
If you have any plans of having your GPA protected for higher education, do not take her class. Her assignment instructions are vapid, mediocre at best. When she grades, shes more concerned about APA than the actual content. Super condescending, and unprofessional. Threatens to fail anyone who speaks up for themselves.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH CHARMAINE PERKINS SHE WILL RUIN YOUR LIFE AND YOUR GPA, MARKS WAY TO HARD ON PAPERS IM NORMALLY A 85%-95% scorer on papers and I barely passed hers. IM SERIOUS WORST PROF EVER,EXAMS ARE SO BAD PEOPLE WERE IN TEARS DURING AND AFTER THE EXAM(me included) AND SOME EVEN LOOKED AT THE PAPER, LEFT AND WITHDREW FROM THE CLASS.
1) She is difficult to understand in her lectures. 2) She gets angry in class if we cannot answer her questions. 3) She has difficulties writing test questions and expressing what she wants in an answer. I will not be taking another class with her.
She is absolutely terrible. Worst professor I ever had in Douglas. Trust me when I say DO NOT TAKE HER. She starts off the first class by saying oh dont listen to ratemprofs BUT LISTEN FOR ONCE AND DO NOT TAKE HER.
Hardest teacher I have ever had. If you dont read the textbook, youre going to fail. Not only she skips many slides which end up being on the exams, she does not post them onto blackboard... either be ready to study hard and a lot, or dont take her. Shes a great person but teaching is not her forte.
I usually really enjoy criminology and sociology, and get A's but this class has me failing. Teaching styles of other professors are much more engaging, exciting and overall makes you want to learn and participate. She is detailed and has a set structure. However, there is lack of enthusiasm, which makes this class miserable. Social setting matters
Do not take a class with this teacher. She treats a 2 year class worse then a 4th year class. She expects you to already know all the materials, so there is not much of teaching that happens in class. Her notes are jumbled and the textbook does not do a good job of explaining what she wants. Her tests are extremely hard. Shes not approachable.
DO NOT TAKE HER EVER. SHE IS RUDE, INCONSIDERATE, AND BY FAR THE WORST PROFESSOR IN DOUGLAS. SHE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH.
Dr. Perkins is a great professor. She knows her stuff and explains course content well. Her tests are fairly difficult, but if you read the textbook and take good class notes you will be fine. She cares about her students and wants them to do good. Will take a class with her again.
I will write this in point form: Hard marker; lectures and content is very dry and boring; rather than having a midterm and a final exam, there was one final at the end of the semester which covered everything from the beginning of the semester (too much for one exam); and lastly, she is very condescending and doesn't seem to like her students.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. She is very unapproachable. I have never had a teacher like her. She puts you down so easily. Good luck if you have to take her class.
I have never had an instructor at Douglas College that was so unapproachable, rude and condescending. She is a very tough marker and has very unclear guidelines for assignments. She will belittle you in front of the class and is no help when you see her after class for help. I will never take another course with her.
Hands down one of the worst profs I have ever had super rude and insulting you ask her for help she wont do anything to help you but insult you and if she doesnt look the tone of your writing she will want you not to be apart of the class I was supposed to get my diploma this semester but now I get it next because I had to drop out to save my gpa
I have been at douglas for some time now and I have never had a professor like her. She is the worst professor I have ever had. If you ask her for feedback she will direct you to the learning center and say she gave you feedback when all she did was insult you. She's a very tough marker. Very unapproachable. I highly recommend not taking her class.
Im surprised by all the negative comments regarding professor Charmaine. My experience has actually been great when taking her courses. The material she teaches is heavy and does require to but in work but I have always gotten good grades from her. I even signed up for a 3rd course with her.
Grades papers insanely hard. Takes off huge marks for any APA mistakes. If you deviate from her guidelines at all she takes off marks. Leaves no room for creativity. Leaves written remarks which are rude!
I would strongly advise against taking this professor. Charmaine could be very rude at times and her exams were extremely difficult. She would often get frustrated with her students. Opinions that do not coincide with her own are not welcome. She is also very strict about academic dishonesty; you even have to cite everything on the exam.
Anyone that grades her really low was expecting this class to be an easy A. Charmaine is very passionate about what she teaches and it shows. I don't think her tests were very hard, but that's because I put in the time to study (this is key!). A tough grader, but not unreasonable. Grading distribution is fair too. Answer emails really fast too!
Charmaine is not an easy teacher to approach, belittles you when you ask questions in lecture and is all around disrespectful to students. The class was not super difficult and assignments were for the most part straight forward but the way she teaches is awful and I would recommend to take classes with literally any other prof aside from her.
After being at Douglas for 3 years, I have never had a professor this horrible before. She belittles her students and once even made out to the class that we were wrong for having a different opinion than her own. I felt like I couldn't ask questions in lectures because she would rudely respond in a condescending manner. Awful professor and person.
Tough class, hard marker but if you make an effort she will respond. Lectures were all online via blackboard and participating was encouraged but sometimes hard and she likes to cut in. Definitely need the textbook as she continuously refers to it for papers and tests. Make sure you have APA down as you will get marks taken away for mistakes.
She is the worst professor in the college by far. She is an outrageous and unreasonable lecturer.
Although her guidelines for papers were clear, it was hard to achieve what she expected even if you think you're doing well. She is very strict with APA and will take marks off if not followed correctly. You need to read the textbook in order to do the papers properly. It's not an easy A class but you need to put in work to get a decent grade.
Unclear about her expectations. Extremely rude over email.
Currently in her class - thought it would be fun and interesting but it just isn't. Could be a cool person in real life, but I percieve as not such a nice person. Take this class with anybody other than her.
Okay to be honest the class and content itself was fine. I did not mind her lectures at all personally and I know other people have their opinions about her lectures. But let me tell you this WOMEN is the ruddest professor I have ever met. She is rude in her emails also. I have never met a professor like this to the point where im writing a review
Don't take her class, you'll fail. She has no respect for her students. She is rude.
Dr. Perkins is one of my favourite professors at douglas college. I have taken 3 courses with her and in all 3 semesters I have done exceptionally well. Her content and assignments are hard but if you put in the effort and show that you care she will give you a good grade. This course is not an easy A but she is not terrible as people here say..
Probably one of the worst classes I have taken. My gpa is going to horrible because of this class. She is very rude and strict. Her exams are so weird because you will do everything that you are supposed to and you still fail. I would not recommend.
I thought I would give her a chance, the biggest mistake I have ever made. Do NOT take a class with her you will regret it. She is so rude in person and over email. She is also a really hard marker.
Worst professor ever. Online exams do not allow you to go back to make any changes. The wording and placement of exam questions most of the time do not make any damn sense at all. Why have 3-4 long written questions in a row? Do you really think students have the mental aptitude and capacity to complete their exams successfully? 0/10. What a joke.
What in the World
She makes you feel stupid for asking questions, do not take her unless you really have to because she is a tough marker and tests are hard. Tests are mostly short essay questions and there is no room for improvement, cannot make up assignments.
Writing skill is the key to pass this course. Recommend an average 60 hours + to work on your book reviews.
It was a hard class, but she is a good prof. Tests were mostly based on lectures and lecture notes, with some focus on videos and other materials she showed in class or asked us to watch.
Dr. Perkins. Is probably one of my favorite professors at Douglas, she gives clear instruction on what she wants how she wants it. Very personable, and show interest in the topic that you are learning. Recipe for success is attend all the classes, take clear notes and START YOUR PAPER EARLY(thus my low grade). Although she may sounds condescending.
She belittles you if asked questions she feels are answered (its a 3 hour lecture, we're bound to miss something). If you have opinions that differ from her own, she will barely give you time to speak. During our presentations, she would speak over the presenters, and any questions directed at the peer presenter was interrupted and answered by her.
She seems tough but if you pay attention to detail, ask questions if you are confused, and follow the assignment criteria closely, you will do well in her courses. She invests in students who invest in the course, so be interested in the material!
She can be a Very rude person! from time to time and shows an attitude to you. If Is shes having a bad day or is not liking your behavior in class e.g. not taking notes or talking to others while she's talking, or on the phone. Would not recommend her unless you like getting belittled, or if you a good grade
Do not take Charmaine. She is the worst teacher I have ever come across. She's rude, unkind and not accessible whatsoever. If you have questions, she will look and speak to you as if you're the dumbest person in the world. She thinks you should be prepared to have all the knowledge in the world and be an expert in everything. Avoid at all costs!
Took some negotiating to get my accomodations (student with disabilities) but she ended up providing a great alternative. Tests are easy if you pay attention in class as there are no surprises. They are all short answer questions so be prepared to write. She provided us with several ways to earn bonus marks as well. Up to 7% free marks
Honestly, people who rate Dr. P poorly are just lazy. Pay attention, do the work, and she will help you thrive. Great, detailed feedback so you always know exactly how to improve. She is one of the few professors out there who will actually prepare you for the real world. Highly recommend!
Would not recommend, very rude
Honestly one of the hardest profs that i have ever met hard lectures that you need to be taking notes for straight 3 hours with a 10 minutes break only midterm and final was really hard asking for specific dates and names from the textbook if you take this class you need to be reading and reading for the whole semester.
I have never felt more obligated to write about a professor. Charmaine is the worst professor I have ever had. When people tell you to not take her... DO NOT! She is extremely rude and does not care about her students. I truly don't know how she still has her job. It's appalling how poorly she treats her students. The worst!
This professor does not show favoritism and grades all fairly, however she is very unfriendly to certain students who are too shy to participate. She is not very understanding when it comes to student's personal life issues.
She is one of the worst professors one can ever have. She will ask you to come to her whenever you have any doubt but will insult you every time. She is known for discrimination. Never ever take this professor.
She clearly favours the sweaty try-hard students or Indigenous students.During Truth & Reconciliation, she asked what people did and she scowled at me when I told her nothing. Says class is a safe space but is extremely rude and passive aggressive herself. The people giving her good ratings are the sweats. I don't even know how she's still teaching
Aside from the countless negative reviews, it is fair to say she needs to improve her interpersonal skills. As a 3rd yr course, she felt constituted increased participation - something she did not shy away from mentioning every class. Students were rather verbal about their experience, and with a score of 1.9/5 clearly students felt impacted.
She is rude and acts like she cares about her students but in reality, she doesn't. When you ask for help she doesn't do anything to help you. She also wants people to talk, but if she doesn't agree she will shut you down.
I learned a lot during the semester. The grading was tough, but if you are polite and put in the work, you can walk away with an A. I'd recommend going into office hours because she does give great feedback.
She does not go into detail and expects everyone to have read/understood the reading. Her lectures are very surface-level, and there is a lot of discussion during her class. if you don't participate you probably won't pass. All exams are essays. Tough grader, won't correct anything and still give you a low grade.
Steer clear of this professor's course! Unclear instructions on assignments. She dismisses others' opinions with a casual 'haters gonna hate' attitude and never self-reflects on her teaching methods. Also, her classes lack engagement; she doesn't share slides, making it harder to grasp the material. Ultimately, I learned nothing but writing skills
Lectures were very long, confusing and boring. She made us do homework and would go around the class and critique it in front of everyone or call you out if it wasn't completed. Very awkward&embarrassing. Her exams were 5 double sided pages of ALL written material that she wanted extremely detailed. Took course 3 years ago and it still haunts me.
During the normal day class she expects us to participate but upon speaking up she cuts you off and starts talking which is very unprofessional of her. She has written exams only. You must listen to the lecture, and read the textbook and take notes. Why she is still a professor at Douglas college altho she is not an efficient teacher? Do not TAKE!!
How is she even a prof? She makes a first year class so difficult, is rude to her students, and doesn't give room for improvement. She doesn't share slides and expects you to buy and read everything out of the textbook before each class. I pray for whoever takes her class and if you plan on taking any crim classes don't take her.
Horrible teaching style. Not approachable and is somewhat rude to students. Would not recommend her to ANYONE. Paper assignment is weird and she could do a better job at making it so people are atleast engaged to do the paper. Lots of reading and lectures are mostly just reviews instead of teaching
I enjoyed reading the contributions of theorists. More specifically, Emile Durkheim, Robert K. Merton, Edwin H. Sutherland and Delbert Elliott.
I don't think words can even describe what you go through in her class. Nobody should have to listen to the degrading words that came out of her mouth towards my class "worst class I've ever had a Douglas"(her words not mine). She is not understanding at all extremely test-heavy, talks a whole lot of nothing in class expects u to know everything
She is a great professor, you just need to attend lectures. What you can take from her courses is up to you and she loves to go with the flow in lectures, I would absolutely take her courses again !
In my humble opinion, some of these opinions are quite harsh. There was clear outline of what is expected in reading and class. Participation in class discussions was an easy way to boost my grade, encouraging me to be keeping up with readings. Everything is written, so if you're a MC/TF exam kind of person, you're out of luck. Fair & unbiased!
I really liked this teacher. The slides are not available so take notes. Any video or website she shows in class you need to view and know it as it can show up on exam. You get to take a cheat sheet into class which makes exams easier. She teaches in an engaging way, we watch videos, discuss in small groups, she is interesting, exams are easy.
This was by far the most difficult class I have taken during my first year. She marks subjectively and has a hard time giving useful feedback. She openly complains about her students and classes, I found that really unprofessional. I found the material engaging but would avoid this prof, take the class with someone else.
You have to put in the work for this class but if you do it is a very fun class. Learned so much and she really got to know us as students. I was unsure at the beginning but ended up loving her as a teacher! I would take another class with her! Just make sure you do the weekly readings prior to class and you will have no issues.
As a first year student, this was tough 3 exams and all long answer or T/F she is knowledgeable and engaging, but she can be quite tough. It's crucial to attend every class since she doesn't post notes online, Her criteria guidelines for assignments and exams. Go see her during office hours it helped me a lot!
Take this from someone who got a good grade, I did NOT enjoy this course. I'm a stem student and this was my hardest course of the semester!!!!! The lectures are pretty much useless if you do the readings and the tests are a brutal 3 hours straight of just writing. But she did answer emails quickly and allow one page of notes for tests. STILL HARD.
Take this from someone who got a good grade, I did NOT enjoy this course. I'm a stem student and this was my hardest course of the semester!!!! By far, the worst teacher I have ever encountered in my life. Extremely rude to students and holds a major sense entitlement. I took her class years ago and I am still traumatized from it. I'm honestly shocked such a professor with such bad reviews, is still teaching at this school. Do better Douglas.
She is a tough grader. UNFAIR DONT TAKE HER! IF YOU WANT TO GET A HIGHER GPA, THEN DON'T TAKE HER!!!!!!!!! SHE WILL DROP YOUR GPA! GOOD LUCK!
She is an easy professor to get along with. She is accommodating and kind. Her class is not difficult, it just requires genuine engagement. Its not about knowing the "right" answer for her. Its about engaging with the ideas and applying to the world around you. She wants to see you think and for that I have deep respect.
I have no idea why Douglas still have profs like that…avoid her even if it's the only prof who teaches the course
Would not take again. I had her last semester and had a awful experience.
A lot of people have said that they dont like Charmaine but personally i have taken 2 classes with her and I didn't find her as bas as people are saying. She is a hard marker but if you follow her instructions and read the textbook you'll be fine. I never had an issue with her personally or as a prof.
I feel many complaints about Charmaine are in bad faith considering she is quite clear about her expectations for the class from the get-go. She won't tolerate disrespect/laziness in her class but as long as you are engaged and thinking she appreciates your contributions. Great learning chance if you're passionate and willing to put in the effort.
Literally the only teacher who took time out of her day to speak to me personally. Sweet woman, even if she seems reserved. Yes, she has higher academic standards but she's coming from a uni environment and they're not unreasonable. She even let us bring cheat sheets, so I don't know how you guys are failing
This professor is the worst professor I've ever had. Her exams are extremely hard, even with a cheat sheet; she expects perfection, and if you can't give that, you fail. Her papers are graded through her own bias against AI; she claims that AI was used, despite there being proof that it was not. She never believes you're sick either. Never take her
For this course, her teaching style was good and engaging; however, her exams never reflected her lectures. Everyone in my class bombed the exam; on top of that, she was extremely rude to students. She never uploads marks either. Don't understand why Douglas has her around. To all the students who said she is fair, she liked you more.
charmaine has a very intimidating presence and can sound condescending at times but she is a professor that genuinely wants you to succeed in the course. personally would not take her again as i'm very sensitive to tone of voice and take everything to heart but she is a good prof if you actually do your work and show up!
Lovely professor that has passion in what she teaches with great lectures, great to talk to about crime in general. Exams are tough but she lets you have a cheat sheet.
Charmaine is not a good professor. Expect her to make assumptions about you, and at times you just feel targeted. Slides aren't posted, but she makes you write them all down. The tests are all long answers which isn't bad but the way she grades is. My experiences are real, and clearly the 50 other 1 stars agree. Ppl rating 4/5 are spreading misinfo
