I did not get him or his teaching., he would speak at times in his own lang, viet., this was not esl, it was math., so to concentrate was difficult, for this would go on thru out the class every 5-10 mins for 5 mins., I had to bring a book to read., very hard to understand., asked for help many times., favored and mainly spoke viet.,
Very kind professor!
good teaher, extremely helpful in teaching to make sure you understand math. he makes math your friend.
Excellent professor! I have never had such a teacher before. Thanks so much.
I had an excellent course in summer!
Extremly helpful! Clear and meaningful lecture.
I do not take his class but he helped me at the Student Success Center with a cristal clarity. He gave me many helpful tips to succeed in calculus.
He is a great professor!
He is great!
Mr. Tran tried to help me by many different methods and tips. I think my math anxiety will disappear one day. Thanks so much.
Very helpful professor!
Mr. Tran explained carefully and clearly all of my questions in the Student Success Center. He is very kind! Thanks.
Professor Tran is an extremely understanding teacher and is caring for every student. I would recommend his class C115 to any students struggling with college algebra. He teaches math the way it should be taught! I always had trouble with math before and thanks to Mr. Tran I finally got it. You will not regret taking him!
He makes math anxiety go away like no other and does anything to help you understand. Great teacher!
Excellent teacher! He is very knowledgeable. He did help me so much at the Student Sucess Center than I expected. Thanks!
Pretty easy teacher for cal 180, take him if you want easy A
Professor Tran is a great teacher! It was just very hard to understand his Viet. English. I think if you struggle with Math it is good to attend his tutoring sessions. You do have to apply yourself because he grades hard on exams. As an American student I like Prof. Tran but I think he needs more ESL to speak better American English.
He should NOT be a teacher! He is EXTREMELY difficult to understand b/c of his accent. He comes to class with NO game plan. I learned NOTHING from him. I had to teach myself the math from the ONLINE book he used. Worst experience ever! Coming from someone who got an A in the past 2 math classes. I've never dropped a class until now :(
Could not understand a word he said!!! Learned nothing, because he talked about the same thing for hours at a time. Class was incredibly pointless to attend.
I want this post to help students!I want to make it clear that this is not a prof leaving this comment BUT an ACTUAL student.Prof Tran helped me to learn Alg very well.I struggled with Alg all my life! But w/ determination and his encouragement passed! You do have to put the effort forward but he will give you every opport. poss. to be successful!
Professor CHAU TRAN has great devotion with profound knowledge to every students, in the class as well in the success center and the work shop. So, his students have got great success, and have shown their profound gratitude to him. Most students would like to continue studying under his leading.
Professor Tran is UNDOUBTLY THE BEST calculus prof I've EVER had in my ENTIRE undergraduate career. I graduated UCSD with a double major, so I'd say I'm definitely credible. I've taken calculus with at least 6 different professors and Prof Tran is HANDS DOWN, the BEST one. He goes ABOVE and BEYOND to help students achieve the A grade.
extremely dedicated prof. beyond passionate about teaching. i want him to teach all my chem and bio classes. that's how great he is. great motivator. wants every single student to earn an A grade. gives extra credit for everything. if you want to learn and get a good grade, prof tran is for you. he's a sweetheart! would take him again and again
If u are taking this class and have not really been introduced to calculus dont bother. He is very hard to understand and the way he explains concepts is very poor. I pretty much had to teach myself and barely passed.
If you havent taken calculus before DO NOT take this class. He is extremely hard to understand and he does not explain things clearly at all. Calculus is already hard but he made it even harder!
his english isn't that great & it's hard to understand him at times but he tries very hard to be clear. he's an extremely passionate & very knowledgeable professor. he goes out of his way to help you, so if you don't get an A, it's your fault. encourages you to learn by giving extra credit for asking questions, etc. review sessions are helpful.
Very good professor. He has a very good hart and do not want any of his students fell the class or get a lower grade. I took him for summer and got an A. He is very easy going and his grading skill is excellent. Just do the homework, midterm, and final reviews and you will be fine. Highly recommended.
The professor tries his best to help his students achieve the best possible grade in the end. However, it may be hard to understand his accent and his explanations aren't always all that clear so if you haven't taken Calculus before, it may be difficult.
Do not take his class. He does not answer questions when you ask him for help. Big waste of time!
Professor Tran is nice, and tries to help. He will go over multiple problems in class, and hands out extra credit for class participation. His first class is a bit annoying because he gives EC for every question, and students take advantage. Worst thing is his English. He tries, but it is difficult to understand him, but again, he tries.
I dropped the first day of class. Professor Tran's accent is reallllyyyy horrible!! He yells out different words. I wish they would replace him.
his accent is poor, but you can tell he honestly want his students to succeed. The class is easy, but his way of teaching might be difficult to put up with. He does try hard to teach his students as much as he can. If you're behind in math and really want to understand the concept I recommend you take it w/ another prof.
Professor Tran seems to want you to do well, but he is not a good teacher. He blazes through lessons without explaining steps fully. Sometimes he answers questions, but mostly he gets irritated and angry if you ask. In class yesterday he literally said, "It's not my job to explain it to you." Sir, you are our TEACHER. You get paid to explain it.
Mr Tran is my best teacher.
Professor Tran always helps me far and beyond his duty as teacher. The students in the class like him so much.
very patient! excellent prof.!
Professor Tran is excellent in Calculus! I do not have his calculus class but I receive help from him at the Student Success Center. He explains clearly and easily what I could not understand from materials. I now can do well my midterm review. Thanks.
Extremely dedicated professor. He is great motivator. wants students to earn an A grade. If you want to learn and get a good grade, prof Tran is for you. He's a sweetheart!
Thanks, Mr. Tran. I didn't believe that I can learn math. Now I decide to take higher level classes, Great professor!
Mr. Tran is an outstanding teacher. I was very anxious about taking math class, he was better help than most teachers I have had. Very understanding of students difficulties.
My fear of math is gone. I had fun in Mr. Tran's class. He is very nice. I am glad I took his class that I learned a lot.
Mr. TRAN is a great professor! He is always willing to help his students succeed! Definitely recommend taking his classes!
Mr. Tran is AWESOME! I have never had a teacher that was more understanding than him. I like to take some more classes with him.
I've got an A with this clasdds. Wonderful professor, best class that I've ever been . Mr Tran is extremely helpful, respond all questions quickly and clearly.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF! I earned A's in previous math courses. Did ALL class homework, got A's on ALL quizzes. "His" midterm had another prof's name on it and "final exam" crossed out. After 10 weeks in class, 90 hours of work, I flunked test. He wouldn't tell us test average and when I asked for help he sugg. I attend a Student Led study group!
As an online instructor he's unclear, doesn't provide feedback or answer direct questions, and is little more than a monitor who writes pitiful exams. He is overwhelmed by direct conversation and doesn't adapt to an online environment. I liked the material I learned, but he is the top worst online instructor I've had.
I spent time in front of computer doing homework and tests all day for the whole semester. His midterm and final were hard and did not relate to homework or reviews. He seems nice guy but having a hard time to understand him when he tried to explain to answer questions. I don't recommend taking his online calculus class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Worst decision of my life. There were millions of hw problems that didn't prepare me one bit. The midterm and final looked nothing like the study guides he gave. No matter how much you study, you won't be prepared for the tests. Don't say we didn't warn you.
I had terrible experience from taking calculus with him. if you take his online class, just focus only on midterm and final exam. homework and quizzes don't count.
Very knowledgeable professor, although he may have a bad English accent and hard to understand what he speaks. The class was overall challenging, lots and lots of homework. Everything is already given for you to learn in your own. Study hard, do the homework and get A. If you fail or get a lower grade, it is basically your fault. Not an easy A.
Standard instructor for math. Straightforward assignments, grading, and expectations. The embedded tutor was helpful. Be prepared for lots of homework assignments due to the course's reliance on Pearson.
Professor Tran actively help students having experiences in online learning environment and really goes out of his duty to help students achieve success. I was struggling with stats, Mr. Tran offers fairness and a genuine passion to help me excellently reach my goal. I recommend Professor Tran for any classes he teaches,
I expected this to be a self-taught class, but I was disappointed with communication from the prof. It was sometimes difficult to get a response from him. 64% of the grade was based on the midterm and final but we never received our grade for the final exam, participation points, or extra credit. I would probably avoid taking a class from him again
I decided to take Trig online during the summer. I did the homework, studied, and really busted my butt to stay ahead. However, there is little to no guidance. You watch youtube videos on repeat that are supposed to help you figure out how to do the problems. I saw the teacher twice. Once for my midterm & again for my final. Just thankful i passed!
This professor is atrocious. The previous review posted on 8/10/17 is accurate; he doesn't provide any guidance, you learn 85% of the class material from youtube videos. Sometimes the appropriate videos for sections are missing, leaving you to scour the internet for hours. The midterm/final don't reflect his study guides. Don't expect answer keys.
I took Chau for trig during intercession and his class his overall pretty clear. He doesn't use a textbook- everything is online & for free. It was pretty much a memorization/learning class for me. I would watch the video and then work on my hw problem (which u get 3 tries). He also gives extra credit and 3 chances for exams.
I'm well into my eleventh week of the fall semester, and I still have not received my final grade for this summer course. He barely speaks English, I've never been able to contact him, even after numerous attempts, his midterms and finals involve things not only that we learn later, but some things he never even teaches us. BEWARE.
This professor will not answer any questions. He is extremely bad at communicating. If he does reply to an answer, it will be an answer to something you didn't even ask. Completely ignores answers from students and only answers the easy questions. DO NOT take his class.
This professor is one of the worst I have, very bad communication skills. Would disregard the question on an important matter. The class is not hard as it is Calc 1 but the problem I have had with it makes it not worth it. Maybe it is because an online class and he isn't the techiest person but isn't able to receive much help.
This professor is really bad at communication. He will only respond to questions he feels like responding to. Even when he responds to questions, they don't even answer the question asked. I tried reaching him through discussion, email, even calling the phone number he provided and nothing. He ignores students and only responds to select students.
This professor is by far the worst professor I have ever had. His communication skills are horrid, he grades tests and doesn't seem to give credit for any work (if you get the answer wrong), and seems to outright ignore questions from students or give irrelevant answers. I fully intend to speak with the dean after this class is over. AVOID HIM.
He ignores students' emails, which is funny because this is an online course. I emailed him 4 times this semester, and mind you this is an 8-week course, he replied ONCE. His reply didn't even answer my questions regarding the final exam. He docks off points without explaining why. Just avoid him at all costs. Nice man though, horrible professor.
Do not I said again DO NOT take him. He is a counselor too. He was unhelpful. He would never reach out back to your email or concerns. He threw a bunch of hw and no directions. There is a lot of quizzes. embrace yourself if you take him
Being an Vietnamese myself, I think the way he grades is so disrespectful to his students. He doesn't care if you get the answer right, if you are not doing things his way, he will deduct the grade from the problem. No lectures taught by him, but he uses some Youtube videos, which are redundant. He would not response to emails at all. Avoid him.
This professor is the worse professor I have ever had the displeasure of having. He doesn't communicate at all. Is generally rude when he does respond to you. (I had to double email him for him to actually respond.) And just takes YouTube videos as lectures, and half of them are hard to understand. Don't take this class, find another professor.
I took pre-algebra and he gave me questions from algebra 2 and precalculus. Always referred to group discussion instead of assisting you directly with specific questions. Reference videos were from youtube from other professors or teachers who actually cared. I don't know what he gets paid for. I was completely lost in this class, never again.
I had this professor for Business Calculus. My course specifically was online, I notice that the assignments weren't up on the canvas dashboard. Midterm & Finals were on zoom, but also had to submit the work on a separate website, he didn't explain very well on how to submit the work while on zoom. Would have rather taken a more difficult class.
I took this course during summer, so the flow is a little fast. He doesn't set any due date for homework and quizzes, I love this point, but remember not to save them until the last week, it would be overload. Only take him if you have good self-study ability because he maybe an intelligent person but not a great teacher!
Lots of homework, no due dates except for exams. you learn everything from reading and watching videos. terrible at communicating and doesn't reply to any emails, practically absent. Entire class was confused on how the midterm would be organized up until the day of the midterm. Even worse at being sympathetic, he does not care about his students.
It is just horrible. He did not answer the emails to any students. I'm not sure I will pass this class. He did not teach you anything. He just sent out a bunch of homework with no direction.
He doesn't communicate at all, taking multiple emails for a misleading response. Lots of homework with no sense of direction. He instructs you to email him about what problem your facing during the office hours. Falsely promises that he will give partial credit on the midterm. Take this class if you want to feel unappreciated.
Emails sent a week ago comes back once in a blue moon. Instructs you to email him about your problems during office hours. Lots of homework, I mean lots.
Just don't !
does not respond to emails. if he does, it usually takes weeks. wouldn't give me full credit for an assignment bc he "couldn't find it" even though i sent him screenshots of my discussion posts. no communication and gives unclear instructions on exam day. you only learn from YT videos that don't cover everything you need to know for the hw/exams.
He does not check emails and has a lot of assignments. Make sure to self pace and complete the work by the end of the class.
Huge lack of communication. Professor always contradicts his instructions so you never really understand what to do. Whole course felt like it was found in a dusty file cabinet from 2006 and no one ever checked to see if all the papers were still there, just threw it at some students and said "Learn something". Only saving grace was an easy final.
Professor Tran exceeds all expectations for being a poor professor. His teaching style cannot even be considered teaching as he just hands you auto-graded assignments on MyOpenMath and takes a long time to grade the exams. Out of the many classes that I've taken, I've never had such an unresponsive and lacking of effort professor.
This class was fully asynchronous, he never set due dates for any of the homeworks(can be good and bad) but there are a lot of them. The exam was proctored on zoom with little to no instruction on how the exam would look like until the exam day itself. He does not answer emails at all and he does not teach, more like a human proctor.
All of the assignments do not have a specific deadline, which in my opinion, is a blessing in disguise. There is a homework assignment per subchapter, ranging from 10 to 20 problems; however, they are manageable to complete within 1-2 hours. Professor is an easy grader on assignments, and the midterm and final consist of problems from assignments.
Theres no due dates for homework assignments so you can go at your own pace. It is mandatory to post in the discussions but he gives an extra week to do so and still able to earn full credit. Theres extra credit opportunities for midterm and final. If unhappy with your grade at the end, he will allow you to improve it.
Did not know i could take a professor worse than Arthur Moore, but I was completely wrong. Not only are his homework insufferable long, but there is SO MUCH homework. This class shouldn't be a last choice class even if you are waitlisted. If you have to drive further then just drive.
If you just need to get through calc then take this class if he's the last option, but he wasn't accessible outside of class or at all, and wasn't clear on instructions to final exam so it made everything hard.
Get ready to slave yourself to your computer I've never had so much homework before. Teacher is also inaccessible
Genuinely does not care for students. Main calc class has 40 assignments, 5 quizzes, 5 discussions. Support class has 78+ assignments, 7 quizzes, 7 discussions and you must do ALL of them, it does not matter if it says some assignments are worth 0% in grades on canvas. he gaslights you and barely speaks english. does not teach AT ALL. lousy af prof
The professor was really sweet. He isn't the best at answering emails but once you have him on zoom chat he really tries to help you. You can do the assignments anytime which is nice because you can get ahead. My midterm grade was 54% but after studying & watching the provided videos I was able to get a good grade on my final. Turn in everything!
Absolutely no communication, zoom links not posted for mandatory synchronous online meetings, syllabus outdated, schedule for exams from last year... This is the most confusing class I have ever taken at Coastline, not because of the content, but because of the complete lack of coherent instruction from the professor.
Worst communication ever! The syllabus and announcements in this class seem to be from other semesters and everything changes last minute. Some announcements say formula sheet allowed on exam, then syllabus makes no mention of them... Instructor doesn't respond to any discussion questions when students ask for clarification
Does anyone know how to get a hold of this professor? He never responds to any emails and the gradebook for the class doesn't even add up to 100%. I have no idea what my grade is or how to project my final grade and professor is not responding anywhere
Don't recommend and many issues with the online course. I just tried to take the final and he posted the wrong password to start the exam! Last day of the semester and now I have an F 🤦‍♀️
Impossible to reach unless it's Thursday. Barely speaks english, and doesn't actually teach. Basically a glorified online proctor. Get ready for 100+ assignments for the main class and support class. Emailed my entire class telling us all that our finals weren't valid. Don't take this course, not even as a last resort.
