Prof is great. Very accommodating and cares a lot about her students.
Prof Freeborn is super sweet and really passionate about this course which makes her lectures engaging and fun. The midterms were super easy, all multiple choice. Her final was open book and also fairly easy, it consisted of multiple choice, short answer, and long answers. Would highly recommend her.
Prof Freeborn was an excellent professor. Made class very interesting and was actually excited to attend class. Never felt surprised by content on tests and expectations were clear. Would recommend this course and professor.
Prof Freeborn was amazing in FMST 312. I was totally surprised about not only the things we learned but also what I learned about myself. She clearly cares about her students as well as the course, and has a ton of knowledge to share.
Dr. Freeborn's class was great - second class I've taken with her. Very clear rubrics and grading criteria. Didn't love the in-class participation activities but was an easy way to get marks. Had weekly quizzes as well. Marks really fair and not too much reading. Highly recommend!
Dr. Freeborn is simply amazing and I had no idea how much I would love her class. I had heard she was great but was worried about the class participation. It ended up being my favourite part of the class. Highly recommend.
Dr. Freeborn is amazing and you can tell she is super passionate about the course. Quizzes were straightforward, gives study guides, the assignments were actually interesting and she was super organized. You do need to attend class though to get participation points. But the classes were generally fun and interesting.
I absolutely loved her. The content she teaches is not only interesting but makes you want to read it further and learn more about it. The quizzes are simple and there were two major/ interesting assignments that made up the bulk of the entire grade. Her caring personality and ability to easily help out whenever you need is why I loved this class!
Lectures are boring, long-winded and not overly insightful. Basically the material is read off of the slides. Missing classes will really affect your grade because participation activities are heavily stressed. Things are marked tough and expectations aren't very clear.
Shares slides if you miss class, participation is expected but includes fun and interesting activities, and clear grading expectations.
Dr. Freeborn is amazing. She cares about students, and her lectures are engaging and informative. It's not difficult to do well if you put in the effort and show up to class. Definitely recommend taking her class!
Didn't really know what to expect, but the course sparked so many conversations and even with my family members. Dr. Freeborn is super open to meeting and discussing assignments, course expectations are clear, and the TA was great as well.
Finished off my UBC undergrad with Chelsea's class, and couldn't have asked for a better course or experience. She made the atmosphere amazing and made me want to join in on the discussion. The assignments were interesting and creative. Highly recommend.
Don't take this class in the summer with Dr. Freeborn unless you want a ruined summer. That's it. That's the review.
This was a super fun class, and the classroom environment was unlike anything I've ever experienced. Thanks to Dr. Freeborn for creating such a great class community
Loved this class. Learned so much about myself too. Dr. Freeborn made even a 9 am class worth getting up for.
Loved everything about FMST 312 - Dr. Freeborn is really passionate and the course is an easy A if you put in the time and effort.
Dr. Freeborn was so kind and engaging during lecture. She really fostered an inclusive and welcoming classroom environment. The course is a lot of work but if you're ready to put in the time, you will exceed. Dr. Freeborn's grading expectations are clear and her rubrics are fair and VERY detailed. Truly, a wonderful soul and an excellent professor.
Reads off slides in a monotone voice. Not engaging. Hard to get an A+. But A is manageable if you work hardddd for it
Took this in summer as one of my last for my degree. And it ended up being one of my favourite courses! Dr. Freeborn is engaging and the class expectations were clear.
I ran into Dr. Freeborn today and it reminded me that I wanted to come on here to share how much I loved her class and her teaching last year. I only hope now I can get into her other class. She is fair, passionate, and clearly loves teaching. And the class is really memorable.
This class was really interesting and Dr. Freeborn was super clear with the lectures, quizzes, and assignments. The class was great and I actually looked forward to going to class (even though it was first thing in the morning).
Honestly one of the most understanding and relatable profs I have ever had. Dr. Freeborn makes the time fly by in the class. And the assignments have been really interesting and engaging. I highly recommend and have been telling all my friends to do the same!
The course itself is very easy and you'll easily get an A- to A if you attend class regularly and study a bit for the quiz. What I really hate about this professor is that she is very inflexible in many ways. The worst professor I've ever had.
Such an amazing prof! So relatable and her lectures are so interesting. Clear expectations and class assignments easy to do well on.
I loved Chelsea, she was incredibly engaging in lectures and gave a clear grading criteria for assignments. Her quizzes were pretty hard, but you use MyVirtualChild and the assignments are pretty easy and a big chunk of your grade. Easy to get a good grade in it as long as you follow the clear grading criteria she has. No final, but a poster proj
I really enjoyed the course and I have benefitted from it in my daily life. Dr. Freeborn gives lots of opportunities for discussions and was so supportive. Easy to do well in the course as she makes it clear how to do so if you put in the work.
As a psychology student, this course contains much less contexts and not helpful for further career development at all. The averages for quizzes. assignments, and final poster were all around 70% which is pretty low,
Dr. Freeborn is a fantastic professor that has a huge passion for teaching. Her lectures are straightforward and include thought provoking questions to help understanding. She connects content in engaging ways through videos, articles, etc. I learned so much from Dr. Freeborn, and this course confirmed my decision to minor in FMST.
Was honestly kinda bored, but she was very nice and sweet. I think she's caught on to people using her class as a GPA booster so she grades a lot tougher now, but nothing crazy.
Pretty useless and boring class for a psychology major student like me
This class was my favourite last semester! The environment was very welcoming and engaging. Dr. Freeborn was very understanding and taught straightforwardly and easily. Additionally, their passion was evident and reflected on our assignments and lectures. I would recommend this class to every UBC student honestly.
I absolutely love this course, mostly due to Dr. Freeborn! I enjoy the material and find it to be interesting and related somewhat to psych, which I also enjoy. I also appreciate the fact that the slides are always posted.
Awesome prof, interesting course. Dr. Freeborn's captivating teaching style and clear passion for the subject matter shines through every lecture.
Chelsea knows that people are taking FMST as GPA boosters, and is cracking down on it. This is essentially a dry and disorganized version of Kathy's 210. Demands for the project and final exam are like "less on the research/movie and more course content", even when it's not fitting so its a lose-lose situation. Also very confusing and inconsiderate
Dr Freeborn made class so fun and she was very kind! Some TAs graded kinda harsh but in the end I ended up with a good grade. She does lots of in class participation activities so go to class!
Dr Freeborn made class so dreadful and she was very rude! Some TAs graded kinda chill but in the end I wanted to end myself. She does in class activities and quizzes so show up on time or she'll act like you cheated
Dr. Freeborn was easily one of my favourite profs so far. The course itself was a little like a therapy session haha and I learned so much more than I have in any psych class about children and families.
My plan is to take as many courses as I can from Dr. Freeborn and I just sent her an email begging to get into another class. I loved the class and how she taught it.
If you have a chance to take FMST 441, do it. Chelsea created the most amazing atmosphere that I've ever experienced in a course and I learned so much not only from her but from the whole class. Best way to end off my time at UBC.
chelsea is a good instructor but the TA will ruin your marks. assignment averages are 70%, do with that what you will
Quizzes were confusing/worded weirdly and professor could be dismissive at times when asking for help. A lot of the content is very surface-level and repetition from other FMST courses. I would not recommend taking her.
Quizzes were very confusing and worded terribly. Heck, if you write like that on assignments, instant F. Email like that, ghosted. She was dismissive all the time when asking for help. Lectures were surface-level but readings were hyper specific (tested on stats). Just take FMST210 (with a different prof obv), you'll cover the same but better
Chelsea is a $#1+ instructor. Expectations were unclear + out of sync, reflecting the disorganization of the course. But it seems like both were looking for more course content rather than application and research. The reason for assignment averages is because she hates how FMST is a known GPA booster. iirc averages were in the mid 70s (fair-ish?)
DO NOT take this course if you want a good/high grades. The rubric for the assignments are very unclear. The quizzes are based on lecture and textbook but worded confusingly. Chelsea was OK but the TA......... tough grader and the feedback for assignments are very unhelpful.
DO NOT take this course for any reason. Everything is very unclear, and the rubric for the assignments are never even followed. The quizzes are heavily content based and nitty gritty with unnecessary details, also words changed so that things are contradictory. Also a terrible writer, she has no right to have expectations for students
I've had positive interactions with Dr Freeborn, but those virtual child assignments are a HUGE pain. You end up writing close to 10 pages worth of responses, and it's still not enough for a solid mark. TA marks ridiculously hard and offers terrible feedback. I give so many personal examples and lecture content, but nope, not good enough smh
I gave the TA the benefit of the doubt. Not sure where I stand. They do have to follow instructions, and it seems like Trapdead was tryna kill us over the GPA booster idea from elsewhere. However, she's too disorganized to sync with the TA. But the course format and lectures were a mess overall, and help/support was blatantly and rudely dismissed
I have a kid, and I can tell you that MVC doesn't reflect reality. A lot of assumptions made, I'm not white nor poor. Needs to set a page length, for clarity's sake. Seemed to prefer excessively long assignments, always asking for more and more length (conciseness is a scam here). To me it's less so difficulty, more so accuracy
Also figure out if you want outside sources + personal xp or not. I know there's too few guidelines, but that was explicitly there. Says we need to read instructions, YES that's true and a mistake I made the first time and learned from. Same goes on your end. Other assignments were marked too slowly, making it harder to do so
This course gave me depression
Don't have kids lol. The one thing I learned. #RestoreRoe
Do not take as a GPA booster. Minimal effort needed to pass but it is difficult to receive high grades. The assignment rubrics are unclear and quiz questions are confusing. Feedbacks from the TA are quite abstract and not very constructive. Worst final essay questions. Nevertheless, lectures are interesting enough and Chelsea is kind & passionate.
Do not take for any reason. The assignment rubrics were unclear, quiz questions were confusing, feedback was unconstructive, prof was dismissive, and the course is abstract by nature but what we heard from them was MISLEADING. Could've just been clear that they want us to reiterate course content in great detail (low mins and no maxes)
She started to use her "new written textbook" this year, the course has become very difficult (as if you comes to this class just wanna take easy&high score course). This quiz has become DIFFICULT you need to spend a LOT of time read the whole textbook to get a high score since she wants to make her textbook very "useful" and force people buy it.
30 MCQS and 3 short answer questions (250 words per question btw) in 45 mins is INSANE. She made her test 10x harder compared to before just because she wants us to buy her textbook (it's 80CAD for half a year acess). Its not an easy credit course from now on, don't take it if u don't care abt fmst.
The next Gateman
Made me hate family studies overall, even though upper year ones without her were okay, I feel like the whole degree is a waste of time. It's more like gender studies at this point, not a real field
i bought the textbook did the readings and came to every class. quizzes were unclear and 30MC were oddly specific about things we never covered. and shes letting a TA teach who didn't help us learn material. I try to be nice about profs, srs. but this is rlly annoying.
waste of my money. so thats awesome
i bought the textbook that she wrote just for this class (Gateman move). Did the readings, came to every class even when sick (to mitigate her wrath). Quiz Qs were misleading + crazy specific about details that no one gaf about. Forced the TA to teach despite being someone from another major who took a better prof and has no knowledge in fmst
Just no, literally a nightmare
She's here for the $. Don't give in. Don't take her (cl)ass, don't buy the book. Obsessed with this social ecology theory (background is stuff no one knows or cares about, much less practices), but believes families are oppressive (why are you in family studies then...). I try to be positive about people, but that's just not possible with her
waste of space
Writing assignments need to be reworked completely: asks too many questions for the word count but also requires depth and connection. Lectures were all high-level theory which I found to be inapplicable and useless. Quiz questions were difficult and unrelated to the lecture. Constantly asks redundant questions that made no one want to participate.
This course needs to be reworked completely: asks dumb and some discomforting questions. Lectures were culturally insensitive opinions and quiz questions were on nitty gritties that no one gives a f(ire tr)uck about about. No one really participated or cared. Take Rafael Wainer instead
Ruined 2024. But a new year with her forever absent dawns. So does the nuclear family
Chelsea's an unengaging prof who cares about her own area of study that isn't even family studies. There was one in-class participation activity per week, which usually was a discussion post that you had to submit within minutes and couldn't edit. If you were ever sick and in the hospital, you got no participation marks all term
My favourite prof at UBC. Her lectures are great and she is super engaging. Also was super easy to talk to about anything and available for feedback. The MVC assignments required a lot of effort but were easy to do well on if you put in the effort. Would recommend Dr. Freeborn's classes to anyone
The class environment that Dr. Freeborn created was the best and most welcoming class I have been a part of at UBC. Her kindness and warmth created such an incredible dynamic. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
It's no game. And no games. She tried to destroy my Nintendo switch. BEFORE class started. But Mario kart ftw. Put Luigi and Diddy Kong into a kart so that they're escaping the clink together
My least favourite prof at UBC. Her lectures are broken and she is super unengaging. Also was super difficult to talk to, often didn't want to talk at all, and refused to answer questions or help. Feedback was non existent, just irrelevant rudeness and bigotry
The MVC assignments were expensive, costing real money to access. Also very eurocentric, if you don't believe in permissive parenting you're done for. Also the simulation made kids rebellious and located us in the hood. She was unwelcoming, uninclusive, would not recommend
Has an attitude and gets annoyed when students ask questions, often answering with something vague and unhelpful. Grades harshly and offers useless feedback. Doesn't use slides or supporting lecture material, class is mainly discussions rather than actual content, but still expects students to have takeaways from lecture.
Unclear rubric and assignment guidelines. Too lazy to double check her own work, so assignment deadlines on canvas vs syllabus don't match up. Grades harshly and is an unengaging lecturer.
Disorganized. Acts like we need to be good writers but that's not the case, she's a terrible writer (and speaker) herself. Can't communicate. Bad and hypocritical for family studies. Disengaged and closed off but expects people to engage. Syllabus misses some key info. Whatever's on is often inaccurate
Marks harshly and doesn't really teach. Assignments are unclear and syllabus is disorganized.
Not a good prof at all. Area of expertise is not FMST, so not sure why she is the prof for FMST courses. Very disorganized and expects students to be great writers, when she is not one herself. Seems to expect too much of students, while providing no useful information or course content.
She's not very welcoming or engaging, and appears quite disorganized. Is not a very engaging lecturer and prefers to have students present for the entire class rather than teaching herself. Course has no real takeaways, avoid this class if not required.
She honestly doesn't do a lot of work herself. The class is mainly discussions or students leading the class while she just sits back and glares at people. Some assignments are self-evaluated, probably because she doesn't want to do more work.
Very rude, grading is extremely biased, assignments and rubric are unclear.
Biased grading, super disappointing when she gives you a low mark for something you worked so hard on, just because it talks about other cultures or doesn't focus on a Western, Eurocentric lens.
Land acknowledgement means nothing when you support erasing culture and family altogether. Why is someone that wants all families to fall in a family class. No, she doesn't want great writers in her class, what she's looking for is not good writing. It's her out of style thing. Disengaged, and is in the wrong field and profession
Extremely tough grader. Exam question expect you to memorize random statistic and facts rather than concepts. Not very accomodating and forces you to buy her v expensive textbook. This course is definitely not a grade booster from any angle. In fact, its the worst grade I have received in the last 3 years
She knows that FMST is a GPA booster and hates that. But who is she to judge that? She doesn't even have a FMST background, and is against family values and hates everyone who doesn't reject it along with their own families. Poor speaker without writing and communicating and comprehension skills, expecting people to know only irrelevant things
Chelsea is an extremely average prof. The course is discussion heavy and mostly student-led. No real content being taught but the discussions are quite thought-provoking and interesting. Assignments are grading decently, not too harsh but not a GPA booster either.
This is exactly what you should expect for a 400-level SOCI/FMST course. It's very focused on discussion. If that's not your thing than maybe pass on this course. However, a lot of learning comes from this. Dr. Freeborn will provide really thought provoking questions, and encourage you to discuss with the class! She provides great feedback!
The course and information in 210 weren't bad at all. However, the prof makes you buy her RIDICULOUSLY expensive textbook, puts the most random statistics on the midterms and final, and her Canvas isn't organized whatsoever. Also, there's one TA in that class who grades like you're a master's student studying family studies. So be aware.
This is not what I would expect from any human being. It's very rude. "If that's not your thing then drop the course!". Provokes people, and encourages people to drop the class! Feedback is nonsense, she's not even a proper writer
Course content is a good challenge. Papers have no min/max so it's up to you how much work you put in. Prof allows AI use which is great. Lots of inclass discussion but you hear interesting stories. Not an easy A but do the work and you will do well.
Course content is not a challenge, but it's bad and often inaccurate. Papers have no min, sure it's up to you how much work you put in, but what she's looking for is improper and unconventional, and she is extremely unprofessional. She hates AI and wants everyone who's ever touched it to die. She harasses people in discussion
Grading slow, instructions unclear, easy yet difficult to do well. Quizzes ask for so much and high-quality responses with limited word count. Feedback slow and general, cannot even improve for future assignments because it's not graded. I understand the low reviews now. Content easy and generic, but course too disorganized. Confusing expectations
Quizzes are extremely easy and carry your grade if you buy the textbook (hella expensive). Essays are arbitrarily marked with a really low average. Workload isn't light either. Don't take if you don't actually care about fam studies since you'll be stuck in lecture halls for the end of class participation activities.
gives me the creeps
Really positive and engaging lectures. Took the class as an arts elective. Yes, some of the non-exam assignments were graded a little harshly, but the exams are straight-forward and she's a extremely kind and approachable.
Really negative and unengaging lectures. Written assignments were actually cool but criteria was always confusing and she couldn't explain them or answer questions, she was rude and got difficult
