I loved how Chelsea made the course accessible by recording lectures. She genuinely cares about students and wants them to succeed. Grading was similar to the first term, which makes sense. I appreciated how she was open to feedback and ways to improve the course. Overall, a kind and caring professor, which is rare to find!
Extremely boring lectures and can be very disrespectful at times. Calls out students who leave the lecture a little early because “it distracts her” called out students who were talking and embarrassed them in front of the class asking “what is so important?” She doesn't expand on lecture slides so you don't have to show up and readings are long
Extremely biased professor, pushes her own agenda about race and gender and does not validate others opinions on the topics. The content she teaches seems made up and uncreditable. This is also a first year INTRO to child and youth studies class yet all of her content is so out of touch, it hardly relates to child and youth studies at all! Avoid!
Extremely politically biased. The second half of CHYS 1F90 she teaches is a complete waste of a semester, she's teaching absolutely nothing meaningful and is extremely out of touch with reality. All she teaches is her political views that she pushes on the class for a semester. You learn nothing meaningful about child and youth whatsoever.
Professor for second half of CHYS 1F90. This professor spends her lectures speaking about her own political beliefs and never connects the material to children. She is also highly hypocritical since she will spend her lecture talking about accessibility but run activities that are not accessible. Also provides long unrelated readings.
Chelsea Jones is the professor for the second half of CHYS 1F90. Her lectures are hard to follow as the lecture slides consist of mostly pictures, quotes, and videos, instead of covering content in depth. Spends a lot of lecture time doing class games, polls, and breaks, making the lecture feel extra long. Readings are unnecessarily long.
Chelsea's one of my favourite profs I've had! Her half of CHYS 1F90 definitely challenged me to think more critically, but I ended up learning so much bc of it. She cares about her students and is available for help if you need it. She also goes above and beyond to make her class accessible
Chelsea is the best chys prof!! She really cares about her students and presents really balanced views about difficult topics, and listens when people speak in lecture. She assigns lots of readings but there's lots of variety with podcasts and movies too so you have to pick and choose what you want. Very approachable.
Very boring lectures, spend most of the time playing random games or activities. Course content pushes a single political narrative without any encouragement of discussion or thought, very condescending prof. Nothing is really related back to child and youth in any meaningful way like the first semester of this course. Not super difficult though.
Very boring lectures with relatively incohesive content and readings.
Comparing Term 1, Chelsea's lectures aren't exactly engaging. The lecture slides aren't comprehensible on their own since it's mostly quotes or images of seemingly random things (Roblox, Kardashians, Barbie, etc.). Also, much of her content is extremely hypocritical as she demotes single stories but doesn't provide more than a singular POV herself.
very grounded and focuses on real life stuff
Extremely caring and kind professor that is willing to discuss questions/viewpoints outside of class time as well. Yes, she has a very different teaching style compared to first term, however, the course is structured as such and she does a good job with how the content is laid out. Lots of readings so it's required to keep up weekly.
Lecture content feels unorganized and hard to follow at times. Overall learning sometimes feels disconnected and pointless. Based on the exam sample MC questions presented in lecture, Chelsea states multiple answers would be considered valid, however only one is correct. This shows that grading is based on subjective understanding of the question.
This was my favourite first year course. Lectures are really great, full of good examples that make sense (Roblox, Barbie, etc.) and the course is interesting. I liked some readings but not others, but most were easy stories and podcasts. Prof does a good job bringing balanced perspective about social issues like sex education.
This was my favourite class. Chelsa gives very good examples so students can relate and apply things we are learning (Roblox, Barbie, etc.) She talks about controversial things but in a really balanced way, like sex education from many perspectives. She is different from John but in a good way that helps me learn. She's really friendly too.
Best first year prof
Unfortunately she ruined the second half of an otherwise great course.
Very understanding prof, very kind to the class. This class made me become a CHYS major.
Best prof, really understanding and will help you during office hours
Chelsea teaches the second half of this course. It's a good compliment to the first half, so we learn about social systems and development. She is training us for second year so it's important to pay attention. She has high expectations of students but they are fair.
I love Chelsea!! She is kind and caring and teaches things that are relevant to our lives. She gives away exam questions during games!! You can tell she is a caring person and she sets us up for success. I wish she could teach the whole year but John is also amazing!!
Lecture content is confusing and unclear. When providing example exam multiple choice questions, Chelsea states that multiple answers could be considered correct depending on the interpretation of the question. This causes lots of confusion and uncertainty. Some content that is taught feels disconnected from child and youth studies.
Overall very poor prof, especially compared to the great first half of the course.
Lectures are very important. She is clearly interested and passionate about the subject, but sometimes lectures can be a drag and boring. Happy to answer questions after lecture and makes an effort to create participation in lectures. Sometimes rubrics are confusing and exam content is vague. Overall pretty decent,
Horrible prof and the exam expectations is to unrealistic
Very bloated and confusing material. Also horrible lectures.
Really disliked this second half of CHYS1F90 and the prof.
Chelsea wants us to fail. Unlike John, her expectations are beyond achievable. She makes no sense and teaches us about common sense world problems. Did not learn anything from her half of the course. I want John back.
This half of this course was very reading heavy. For the exam we were expected to properly APA site all our readings used when answering the statements (not questions) provided. Little to no lecture content will help me in the future, nor did it help with the exam.
The first part of the course (semester 1) was very enjoyable and the prof was funny and engaging. Unfortunately I can't say the same for Chelsea Jones. Her lectures were always as long as possible and sometimes she would waste the first 20-60 minutes on a game. Her presentation style also wasn't engaging and overall ruined the course.
If its your major required, good luck. Elective? RUN. Her lecture, readings, and exam, ALL confusing. We had to APA cite our short answers for a closed book final (tho cheat sheet allowed). Also a question asked for exact title, author, and publish year of specific readings..Feels like that stuff shouldn't matter that much in a closed book exam??
Good prof, available when needed.
Great prof. Her lectures were interesting and she plays games to keep us engaged. The exam was easy, she basically gave us the questions in advance during lecture so there was nothing unexpected. You can bring a cheat sheet.
Chelsea is very thoughtful and engaging, and available during office hours for anything. Some people in the class are immature, and she handles it well. i personally learned the most in the second half of the class. I want to work with children so everything was relevant. The exam was not hard and she offered study sessions to help prepare.
Great lectures I learned so much and felt like I really got my moneys worth. Wish she taught the full course, her examples really helped me understand the course better than in term 1
Her main focus is making sure you understand the sociocultural side of the course. Her lectures are very clear and she provides lecture notes. If you do the readings the exam is easy. She is very caring and will help you write essays and prepare for the exam during office hours. Overall one of the best teachers I ever had!
Very good prof, approachable and cares about the content.
The class was really accessible, and you can tell chelsea really cares about her students. The exam was easy and you can bring a cheat sheet. Good idea to do the readings for the exam though, it would be hard if you didnt.
Very good teacher Some of the best lectures for first yr
As a first year Con-Ed student this course helped me with other courses, including exam prep and citing. I will use these skills in the future. Work load is moderate and straightforward. Prof is accessible outside of class. Depending on your TA, you will probably pass this class with nothing lower than a B.
I was in Professor Chelsea's class and it is a great class! She is very easily approachable and does everything she can to accommodate the needs of students! She is a great teacher (along with Prof John) that made me love CHYS 1F90 more than I honestly thought I would!!
A challenging but incredibly worthwhile class! Chelsea's lectures are engaging, and her teaching model is flexible and accessible. I would highly recommend!
Excellent Prof. Great lectures with a lot of information and engages with the class through games and conversations. Passes on her passion for childhood, bodymind difference, and accessibility. Thanks!
Very good and easy to understand lectures. She is professional and knowledgeable, a few article readings for seminar but that's it. Easy assignments and exam. She lectured off slides a lot, so I wouldn't miss any lectures if you can help it. She is very thorough and you will not get it all from just the slides.
Chelsea wants her students to succeed. She is available outside of class and stays around after lecture to answer questions. She invites people who don't want to stay for the whole lecture to leave early and spends the rest of time answering everyone else's questions. If you want to succeed Chelsea will help you. The exam will be easy for you.
I understand lots of topics be better now because of how Chelsea explained them in lecture. She makes difficult ideas easy to understand, thanks
Great prof, easy to get an A in this class if you read. Readings are long but high school level, comics and magazines. Had a good TA. Show up for seminar or you'll miss stuff.
Biggest waste of my time ever! The amount of breaks was ridiculous and so unnecessary. Could have been done lectures an hour but extended due to breaks. Will never get those 2 hours a week back ever.
Chelsea would sit and stare until students participated, wasting our valuable time. She got angry at people often and called out those talking. She would also sit and wait until everyone was silent. Like seriously we aren't in kindergarten.
Chelsea made this class great. I liked both semesters but I learned more in term 2. This class was way better than I thought. A couple people I know switched majors to chys.
Professor Chelsea is truly inspiring and caring. Her amazing lectures deepened my interest in Child and Youth Studies. She provided exceptional support throughout the semester, inspiring me to pursue a future in education. A remarkable educator who makes a great impact on her students!
I loved her and her class! She cares a great deal about her students and you could tell she knew the material. Always made lecture interesting and asked our opinion on different topics.
Good Prof but you have to read
Her attention to accessibility is incredible. She gave us 5 minutes breaks and ended clas early sometimes. She goes through lecture at a good pace and she will repeat things if you ask. She used captions but sometimes they don't work.
I LOVED her so much. She made you really think outside of the box on social issues. This was very refreshing after term 1 which is more basic. One of the best professors ever.
Queen knows how to handle herself when there are rude people in the room. Respect.
Very nice Prof
Learned way more with Chelsea, her lectures were relevant to working with children and youth in current issues.
Goes above and beyond to help students learn. Amazing prof!!!
Chelsea's term mirrors the first term but is more challenging because the topics are more complicated. She teaches you to have an open mind and thinks of things through many stories. Her lectures are easy to follow and she writes lecture notes and posts them online so you can catch up if you miss any. The exam was easy and with a cheat sheet.
Easy class if you do the readings. Yes, she expects you to work but it's university so........
Chelsea is truly a great professor. She included different forms of content in lecture, and connected with students in office hours. I succeeded on my paper in her term because of her help! Thank you, Chelsea.
Awesome prof. Hope to have her again someday
Great prof
LOVED this professor. If you can't attend one of her lectures, all slides are always posted, and she always has lecture notes that you can print. Readings were all different so not boring. I actually WANTED to show up to her lectures because the material is pretty easy to grasp and she makes it more interesting with stories and culture examples.
People would talk during lecture making it impossible to hear anything so Chelsea would wait until people were quiet to keep going. She called out those talking so the rest of us could learn. Like seriously we aren't in kindergarten.
Amazing professor. She helped me write my essay and I did better in this class second term because of her help. She cares a lot and you can tell.
Found a way to explain ideas that didn't make sense in a way that did.
Chelsea is truly a great professor. You can tell she cares about students. She spent several weeks preparing us for big assignments including by offering extra study sessions. If you show up you will do well because she will spoon feed you the exam questions and answers. Very easy to do well if you pay attention.
Great lecturer, very accommodating to complicating life circumstances, very committed to guiding students when they struggle with assignments/class material.
She makes her lectures very interesting and the assignments and tests we very reasonable! She tries to get to know students in such a big class and she overall made the class enjoyable! She and John are excellent!
Would love to take her again as the way she teaches is super coherent, engaging, and she'll explain something again if someone indicates they don't understand it. Tends to run until the end of class but never over, and sometimes ends early.
She genuinely cares about students and wants them to succeed. Grading was similar to the first term, which makes sense. I appreciated how she was open to feedback and ways to improve the course. She's the only Prof I've ever seen cite every slide so you know the research behind what she teaches. Overall a rare teacher!
the lectures are pointless because she never actually relates things to CHYS. Each lecture felt like the same material over and over. There are a million long readings and her is voice is very monotone. be ready for dumb class games. hardly any lecture notes, mostly pointless pictures|
Compared to first prof, this one falls short. Makes everything more complicated and her exam did not make sense.
She is very good at teaching and takes her time during lectures to make sure everybody understands the material and answers all questions. She is also an easy grader and provides everyone with the exam questions early so they can prepare well in advance. She is also very friendly and intelligent.
Love this class, it really opens your eyes and makes you look at things from a different perspective. Made Child and Youth interesting. TAKE THIS CLASS, ITS WORTH IT
Assignments and exam easier then in the first term, just do the readings l
Her lectures are just pictures and redundant, making it difficult for note-taking. The exam was quite unclear, leaving many students feeling confused. Additionally, she has called out students for leaving during lectures, despite their departures being quiet and respectful. In these instances, no one in the lecture hall even noticed their exit.
Chelsea is an incredible teacher. I learned so much from her. She will go the extra mile to answer questions if she sees students need clarification. She gives opportunities for people to leave early, and shares slides and lecture notes so you won't miss anything if you can't stay for the whole class. She treats us like adults and respects us.
She was one of the best teachers I have had at Brock. She genuinely cared about her students and made the class interesting. Her office hours for the paper was very useful. She is willing to work with students and she wants to help them succeed. If you go to class and participate you will get an A. She shares exam questions during class, too.
Really kind prof. Her lecture style makes it really easy to understand the material and expectations. She wants her students to be successful. Highly recommend.
overall great experience super helpful prof, and very easy to talk to. allows students to follow their interests and use their own experience in a way that can further engagement and leaning
Hi—not a bot. I have had Chelsea for two classes and she's amazing. She really listens to what students have to say. She provides lecture notes, exam questions—everything. She is all about setting us up for success. The negative comments below are the manosphere, can't handle it.
Really good prof. I learned so much. I want to take more classes like this.
Love her. She teaches the better part of the course.
Chelsea Jones was an amazing prof! My friends and I went to office hours together and she helped us prepare for the exam. She is so kind and built a personal relationship with students. Everyone in my seminar loved her lectures because she introduced new ideas every week. She accommodated fo mental health too which was incredible.
Very good teacher
Very good prep for summer courses. Keep her notes because they are helpful in second year.
Had a teaching style that made it hard to digest her material. Even her seminar preps weren't always organized.
This professor is amazing! Her lectures are super interesting and always on point with topics that really make you think. The assignments are so clear, and she's a super fair grader who gives helpful feedback. The class feels motivating and easy to stay engaged in. If you get the chance to take any of her classes - do it, you won't regret it!
She teaches the half of the course about child and youth studies. I learned so much about topics I was afraid to talk about before this class. Seminars were more fun second semester. Chelsea introduces new information and ideas that made my first year worthwhile. Best teacher.
Her lectures use memorable visuals that help me remember the material. The exam was quite easy because she gave us questions in advance to study. Additionally, she respectfully has breaks in class so we can leave if needed. When people are disrespectful talking in class she waits for them to stop talking so the rest of us can hear the lecture.
Great, no complaints. Easy exam if you read. Nice lady.
Easy readings and exam. Seminars is good or not depending on your TA. She cites her slides to teach us APA, definitely prep for second year. Stay for the full lecture to get exam answers.
Chelsea teaches the more interesting part of this class. The first semester is more like high school. The second semester made me see things in a new way.
The course is reading heavy but she gives you the test questions in advance. Her lectures are very thorough and she makes sure you understand what she's explaining. She uses multiple teaching methods in every lecture as well, so it's engaging.
I took her class as one of the first classes I've taken and absolutely loved it! The material is very up to date and she explains complicated and sensitive topics in very unbiased and easy-to-understand ways.
Great teacher
