She is awesome. Very nice and kind, makes the class easy to understand. She will stay late until you get it. New professor but she made such a difference. Good examples and explanations. Plenty of time for lab work, even get out early sometimes. High recommend!
Amazing professor, loved the class. she actually wants you to learn and makes it easy.
Great teacher. Class is hard, but she truly tries to help students understand the subject. I definitely recommend her because she is very helpful.
I highly recommend taking Ms. McKenna for lab. The clarity of her teaching is very helpful. She is enthusiastic, outgoing, caring, and down to earth. Ms. McKenna is in tuned with her students and that speaks volume for a professor. She is willing to take her time and help you understand this class. She truly made lab class fun to attend.
Amazing lab professor, very funny and lively. She's loud and really does care to make sure that everyone understands the material.
The best professor I've ever had!The class itself is challenging.
Very enthusiastic when teaching. She runs through lectures very quick, suggest you record her lectures. Study guides are 4-5 pages long and don't reflect whats on the test. Test are hard and nothing like what she goes over in class. Homework questions are just as hard.
young and vibrant professor, goes through chapters to fast tho ,only covering the general topic without much depth and examples. The exams do not discuss what was talked about in class making them that much more confusing.
Super tough. She is not specific. Tests are very hard. Homework is even harder. She lectures very quick and sorta expects you to memorize everything on every page. not realistic for a good grade.
Get ready to read and read again. Test are hard, If you come to lecture, read your book and study her power points on Canvas you will do well. Biology is not easy. just invest more time. DR Mckenna is great. Her open book quizes and hommework help alot. she is always available to answer questions even after lectures. Responds to email on time.
Dr. McKenna was great! I had her for lecture and while she did go through the material quickly, she would do her absolute best to help students understand all of the concepts. If you need help don't be afraid to ask for it! She is more than willing to help. Only 4 tests and homework assignments the entire semester and some open book quizzes.
D. McKenna is really sweet but she talks too fast. She is always welcoming questions and review oppertunity but all the information hits you like a fast moving train that you do not know where to start. If you sell your life to the devil you will pass this class with a good grade
She is an excellent instructor, and she has a wonderful sense of humor. Biology 189 itself is a very difficult class so don't expect to pass if you don't put a whole lot of work in. She really does go out of her way to help students understand the content. Her homework and quizzes are based on the in class exams, her quizzes are online. TAKE HER!
Amazingly helpful professor. If you're taking McKenna I highly recommend you visit her during office hours if you're having trouble, she is absolutely there to help you out. The class (bio 189) is known as being hard as hell for most students, but McKenna is definitely one of the easier professors for this subject.
Great teacher! Biology 189 is a hard class no matter who you take, but she definitely helps! She is there for you above and beyond what is expected from a teacher. She never makes you feel bad or dumb for asking questions and will walk you through any of the quiz questions (online) or homework. Definitely recommend her for any classes!
Professor Mckenna is the woman! She is extremely knowledgeable and is very pleasant to listen too. I would recommend her for EVERYONE! She wants her students to succeed and be the very best, she is always available to help ANYTIME, and you can honestly feel that she cares. Shes amazing and so funny in her lectures! Its BIO so you HAVE to study! :)
Best. Professor. Ever. She makes a very confusing subject extremely clear and easy. She is willing to help WHENEVER she can. 189 is meant to be challenging so expect to study. Powerpoints are very organized. 6 tests vs 4 tests and an optional final. Short online quizzes after each lecture so you have a chance at a lot of points. Take her!!!
She is nice however can be really confusing at times. The power points sometimes are not correct, also tests are confusing and written weird so you end up getting stuff wrong. She's there for you and will help but even so class is tough. USE A RECORDER because she's a speedy talker. Hw is really hard as are the tests. Quizzes are open book.
1 chapter per class, quizzes online(no time limit), homework is hard, uses powerpoint, speaks fast, but she's very helpful. Tests: Very hard, questions are asked in a way to make spend 5 min trying to understand.... not fair, just ask the question straight forward! Tips: Read book before lecture, print study guide for every chapter, stay ahead!
You have to sell your soul to pass this class. Kidding? Tutoring is free I highly recommend it to everyone. She is enthusiastic and willing to help during her office hours. I'd also suggest you print out the power point & write notes aside while she goes over them. This class is NOT EASY! The tests were always different than what I had studied.
Just like her lectures her labs were less than mediocre. A quiz before every class, which she would grade unnecessarily hard. She waste time trying to fill up the 3 hour lab by treating the class like children having us review every lab manual question. On top of everything most of the equipment was defective, which lead to a lot of lab redo's.
If you're looking for an easy A in 189, good luck! You definitely have to work for it, but this teacher is amazing! Very approachable, sincere, & wants you to succeed! She was always there to answer any question that I had after class & those who sought her help did really well. Easily one of the best BIOL professors at CSN. Thanks again Doc!
Love this lady. She gives you clever ways to remember the information. I would recommend her.
Very sweet lady. The lab class didn't correspond well with lecture class, but that;s not the professors fault.
AWESOME PROFESSOR. Just record her lectures and you will pass. She is really passionate when she teaches and this makes the class easy. YOU DO HAVE TO STUDY . She was also my lab professor and she did great job.
Studying is essential. Material is tough. 5 tests, 5 hw assignments, 5 debate attendances and 1 group debate. No EC. Professor speaks fast. Recommend reading chapter before class
I can't stress enough on how great she is! She's there to help you in any way. She has powerpoints and review days! You're allowed to record her lectures, which I truly recommend. Study study study her powerpoints! She drops One of your lowest exams and 2 online quizzes. Quizzes are open book and not timed!
I had Dr. McKenna for lecture only and he was amazing! Her lectures were clear and she was always willing to answer questions. There are six tests and an optional final. She assigns a 5 pt quiz per chapter, and she assigns homework and vocab to be due each test day. She is always willing to help and wants everyone to succeed.
She's my absolute favorite and I wish every biology class was taught by her! She's very helpful and really tries to get every student to understand the concept of biology. You just need to study and be prepared before class because she does have a lot to get through so she sort of goes fast. Just try your hardest. She gives 6 exams which can help!
I may not be the sharpest nail on the shed, but She definitely has brought a great amount of experience in my education by teaching me how to prepare before and after class. Anybody looking for a professor that cares about your success and will teach you the fundamentales and conditionings to be an excelente College students I suggest Dr. Mckenna!
Amazing teacher! Has a passion for the subject and puts her all into teaching it. The online portion of the textbook comes with a code for connect and gives you practice tests- these helped me so much! Her tests are based off of them and you will pass if you use this!
She is great and explains difficult concepts really well. She is always more than willing to answer questions you may have. She also makes sure you leave the class completely understanding everything we covered that day. I live far but I make the drive just to learn from her. Every class with her is laid back but really effective.
Class was easy, any questions I had were answered !
This teacher doesn't teach, just merely recites a PowerPoint without explaining the concepts. Expect to learn this material on your own, because if you don't read the book you will not pass by just attending lecture.
I loved Dr. McKennas' Class! She makes her expectations clear. She uses powerpoint. 6 Tests and an optional final, online quiz for every chapter, uses quizlet, and has a homework assignment for each test. Its not an easy A or B but she wants her students to succeed. Would defiantly recommend
Biology 189 is a tough class, if you don't dedicate your most of your free time to this class you won't pass. Overall though she was a very enjoyable professor. She has a wonderful sense of humor , and is truly there to help and make sure you succeed. She is a gem! take her she's worth it!
she was an amazing professor! she has fantastic lectures and if you purchase the new book with the code that allows you to use the review for the book online you will pass the tests because it allows you to learn and see what will be on the tests. she does go a little fast but she posts the slides online but going to lecture will help so much.
Professor McKenna was absolutely amazing! 5 tests (100 pts ea), optional final. Print lecture notes prior to class, take notes & attend every class including every review days! She is there to help you, she knows what she is talking about & is very passionate about the subject. I would take her again in a heartbeat! STRONGLY RECOMMEND TAKING HER!
I took Dr. McKenna because she had good reviews on here. Most of them were true. If you study hard you will pass her class. She speaks very fast when she lectures and her power points are very complex, yet the tests were very detailed. Print out the powerpoints and go to tutoring they will explain it in detail much better than she will.
Professor McKenna is truly one of the best professors I have ever had- Especially with Bio 189. This is the second time I took 189 but this time with McKenna. Her lectures and Powerpoints are long, so record them! Her tests are from powerpoints/lectures. Not an easy A- but she cares about our grade. Such a wonderful woman! TAKE HER!! :)
I really liked McKenna as a person. She was very sweet & super helpful with homework assignments or questions about lecture, her office was always open. However, I struggled with her tests because she reviewed ALOT of material. But if you are an efficient studier & you attend her reviews, you will pass. I got a B in her class, it was tough!
Clear expectations from the start! Tests are 45 questions in 45 minutes and one chance so be prepared. Excellent power points with extra credit hidden inside so definitely watch them, they were very helpful. Dr. McKenna provides great feedback, so If you get something wrong, she lets you know why. Great online instructor!
Professor Mckenna is very helpful and delightful. She took the time to respond to my questions very quickly. Her instructions are always clear and precise. The work is overall time consuming but not difficult at all. I took her class online. The assignments were actually interesting. She offers extra credit and good feedback.
Yet to complete the class but Dr. McKenna is amazing. 189 is HARD, you definitely have to earn your grade. Tests are multiple choice and based on lectures. So print her slides, record, and rewrite the notes on your own time. If you miss class, have a friend send you the lectures. 5 tests, and final is optional. Drops the lowest grade. TAKE HER! :)
Take Dr. McKenna. She is amazing. She let's you print her slides and record her lectures. Her lectures are very easy to understand. Biology 189 is not easy but if you are able to put in study time, you will do just fine.
Lectures are a must, especially her review days. Her powerpoint are available to you to be printed before. The tests aren't easy but if you go to the review days you will know exactly what material you need to study or brush up on. She's very knowledgable and makes lectures engaging.
Took Bio 101. Best professor ever. Attendance is not graded but you should be present and take notes. You don't really need the textbook as she provides slides but you do need connect access. Tests are not hard if you do your HW and study a bit. She makes the class fun and is helpful. 1 group project, its easy.
Dr. McKenna is very thorough in teaching biology. The main importance for her was to be able to apply the material. That is the best way to learn and understand the information. She is super sweet and I would definitely take her again if she had high class levels.
Take this class if you want to have fun while learning. She cares about students, makes sure you get it and is funny. This isn't a class you can just breeze through, well this isn't a subject you can just breeze through. You will need to take notes, do homework and study for tests but if you are the average student you will have no trouble.
Dr. McKenna is amazing! She allows students to record her lectures, all of her tests are multiple choice but can be tricky. She does an exam review the class before the exam date, which really helps. That being said, students do still fail this class. If you study, attend class, and definitely dont miss review days you will pass.
Dr. McKenna is great! There are 5 tests throughout the semester plus the final (which is optional & she makes it easy!). She does a class review day before test day, which is really helpful so definitely attend it. Any biology class you take is HARD so you need to study!!!
Lecture heavy but Dr. M is very passionate about biology.5 tests and a final, lowest grade is dropped. Attendance not mandatory however her tests come from her lecture/PPoint. Allows recording. Textbook helps if bio not your thing. I didn't use it once. Get E-copy, it's cheaper. Tests are tough. Take good notes and GO TO review day. Must study.
Dr. McKenna knows her stuff. Power Points available online and printable. You can record her lectures which I found very helpful. Multiple Choice exams, and optional Final. Do ALL online assignments for the points. Mastering Biology test questions/activities were helpful. BIO 189 is hard, you just need to figure out study habits that work for you.
she is one of the best prof ive had at csn!! her lectures are so informational and not boring at all. she knows what she is talking about and truly cares for her students! biology 189 is a really difficult class but she guides you completely through it, it's all up to the student to do the rest of the work!! highly HIGHLY recommend her!!
Very tough class to take and maintain a school life balance. I ultimately ended up having to drop this class as I couldn't balance the amount of required "off campus" studying against working a full time job and raising/caring for two young children. Result will vary for you, as I recognize my inability to meet standards as a personal failing.
Enough said, take another professor or U will regret it!!
I am taking the Biol101 course with her. Her grading criteria is made extremely clear from the start. She really cares about you and if you fail, its pretty much your fault. Only one group project, easy homework, and 5 tests. The final is optional. You obviously have to study but its never over the top. Free online textbook for biol101 too!
This professor is so overrated, I wonder who is making all those comments. I would never take this professor ever again after taking her for lecture.
There are NOT enough AMAZING things I can say about Professor McKenna. Chelseys PowerPoints are SPOT ON. She has a real gift for explaining biology in such a way that such a foreign subject becomes very easy to understand. HER TEST REVIEWS ARE LIFE. Any PowerPoint slide she goes over on the review is EXACTLY to the T what will be on the test.
5 tests. STUDY for those tests because HW is just a quirky way to help you remember. HW due on test days so only 5 HWs and she won't take late HW. Does a review before every test and SLIDE MENTIONED IN THE REVIEW IS THE TEST! Nothing outside. She only takes attendance on the first day and all debates (Debate days are the review days )
Professor McKenna is the best I've had for Biology. All of the tested information is on the slides, but I would suggest reading the free textbook she provides. She only takes attendance on debate days; debates are highly exciting and the whole class engages in them.
This teacher doesn't care about her students succeeding, she has no heart about anything. If you're late 10 minutes to class on a test day she wont take your homework as she will claim that you probably just worked on it the first ten minutes of class and now its a zero, btw this isn't even written in the syllabus. attendance is only on debate days
This professor is the best! Her lecture are clear and easy to read. She has test reviews before each test which you can record. Everything she goes over is on the test. You still have to study hard but if you do it is an easy B or A. I dont know how any one can complain about her. Final is optional and will drop the lowest test score.
Really straight forward .Record record record lectures if she dosent cover it in lecture its not on test. 3 question quiz online for every lecture. Only 5 homework assignments due test day. No late anything accepted. I loved her class. Lots of information but she has an art to help you learn. Highly recommend her, I wished she taught Biol 223.
She is more crazier than a goat!!
Dr. Mckenna is definitely among one of the nicest professors I've had and will never make you feel out of place regardless of what type of questions you ask. I've taken 223 in a 5 week course at UNLV and it was less difficult. She moves extremely fast. Record her review lectures before tests on your phone and study religiously. I would take again
Loved her! The sweetest professer and interacts with her students. I dreaded going to a 3 hour lab class, but her labs are fun and she will help you if you have any questions. Show up to labs! that is pretty much your whole grade. You will need to purchase the book to do your work in.
In lecture,5 big tests and homework. Her lectures feel like an eternity but I recommend you only go on review days study 3 class periods worth of work then do the test then skip another 3 days. You have to study!! Those tests are most of your grade but lab helps it a lot bc its mandatory. Her lab never leaves early like the rest. One group project
The greatest professor ever! She was not only an inspiration for all of us but also a great person outside. I stay in contact with her as a friend!thank you to make me love Biology you are amazing
Lecture are long and draining. A study guide is not provided for the tests which is ridiculous. The test questions are worded difficulty on purpose. The wording is much different than the book or lecture. No late work AT ALL even if you have a DOCTORS NOTE during a PANDEMIC. This should not be a beginner class.
She goes fast during lectures but she records all of them. Review days are on Webex in which you can interact with her and other students. One quiz per chapter (3 questions), you can drop the lowest chapter quiz grade. 5 tests (100 points), 1 final (not mandatory). You get to drop your lowest test score which is why the final isn't mandatory.
Dr. McKenna was one of the best teachers Ive had at CSN. This class was challenging, but she made everything easy to understand and gave us many ways of remembering things easier. I also loved that she recorded the lectures! It was really helpful to be able to rewatch before tests! Highly recommend!!!
Dr. McKenna is an amazing lab professor. There was a total of 11 in-person labs and one online lab. The labs are fun and you get to work on them with your lab partners. The only homework assignments were the pre labs that had to be turned at the beginning of class; you show up five minutes late, she will not accept it. Great professor overall!
this professor is a real gem, I will do biology only with her as a professor, she makes me love biology, definitely I will do a second class of biology with her.
How do i begin to express myself. I am not an online person but due to the pandemic and working a full time job I was forced to. She was probably the worst Lab Coordinator and the quizzes ?? unreasonable. It dropped my grade immensely. I have never felt more stressed in my entire life than how I was in this course. It was TERRIBLE
great professor for a beginners biology class she understands you only need to know the basics of bio. Since it's biology the basics are A LOT. with any biology 189 professors, you will have to study. She's the best professor for 189 but no late work or excuses. she wants to help! it comes down to how much you want it. no study guide but HW to help
Dr McKenna is an amazing professor and you can really tell she loves what she does! There are quizzes and homework for every unit but it helps you learn the content. The class is difficult but she makes it worth your time and energy! Sometimes the lectures would drag on but shes very nice and enthusiastic. She has Webex meetings if you need help!
Love her. Very easy class if you pay attention.
Great lab instructor. Make sure you show up!
Professor Mckenna was such a great experience. I took this class as a non-major and it was so easy. her lectures are very clear and help you learn, she offers help outside of class, and her tests aren't hard at all.
Prof McKenna is the coordinator for all the BIO 101 labs which explains why she was a tough grader. Regardless, she was still nice and cares about the success of her students. Honestly, as long as you show up to all the labs, do the work, and get along w your group; you will do fine.
I wouldn't recommend taking this course online especially if you have a short attention spam or can't work in group project online. Professor McKenna was great and I loved her lectures. The only I struggle I had was taking it online, definitely a class you want to take in person.
Dr. McKenna is very passionate about science and it shows in her lectures. She gives everyone an opportunity to succeed, asking for feedback on previous unit lectures and offering flipped classrooms for chapters that seem harder to comprehend than the others. There are short chapter quizzes, but these helped me with reinforcement of the material.
Dr. McKenna is everything you need in a professor. She is clear, down to earth, extremely flexible for help outside of class, fun, and thorough! All tests were drawn from lecture material, or from information that was readily available on canvas. Her class is foundational for anyone planning to continue through the sciences.
She is way to picky in the work for her labs. Would subtract points over any little thing. You cannot miss class. Is nice but once again has too much time on her hands to look through every little thing on your work. Overall, shes ok, just remember to read her instructions/ questions VERY carefully.
I took Dr. McKenna's class earlier this spring. Dr. McKenna is rather chill; however, she is a VERY strict grader who scrutinizes every detail on your assignments. Be prepared to print and THOROUGHLY review all your pre-labs, labs, and papers beforehand. Apart from that, the class itself is rather okay!
This class was actually insane. If you aren't good with computers DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She was quite literally teaching computer sci in biology.
The book isnt really used; its mostly slide shows. Interesting lectures that are not boring. The professor knows their stuff and is always willing to answer questions.
Amazing professor, she explains the course material amazingly good. The lectures are heavy and the test is also heavy. Her grading system is tough so you have to study A LOT. Final exam is optional, however, if your grade is at 75% then yes, you should take the final exam. If you don't do well on 3 tests, then you are pretty much screwed.
Dr. McKenna was a great professor. She lets you record, which is extremely helpful, you can always visit her during office hours (or if your schedule is wonky, she'll work something out with you.) Everyone in the class mostly participated, and her slides were easy to understand.Tests are tricky however, use SI, Quizlet and whatever else is provided
professor mckenna was amazing. she explains the material really well, and only leaves one homework assignment per unit, which are really good refreshers for the upcoming unit tests. She also let's students record the lecture to study any notes you took during class which you might not have fully grasped.
Do not believe anyone else who is giving this class a good rating. It is NOT easy and she does NOT communicate well. At this point it is not e
And lemme just say I think this woman is writing herself good reviews because not only are they NOT TRUE but they all sound the same. Please for your sake do not take the class. You will be much happier elsewhere
This class is perfect for health majors! Professor McKenna was awesome, very friendly, always willing to help after class, and she makes the material fun, engaging, and useful. If you generally struggle with science I would not recommend to take her class because you'll find it too hard.
I don't understand why we have an exam every 2-3 weeks. It's so much work, don't take her. For a class that's 101, it's very hard. It's not even the material itself that's hard, it's the work that she has us do. It's like she doesn't want us to have any free time.
If you aren't majoring in BIO or anything related to science, DO NOT take her. Overloaded with assignments, quizzes, and lockdown browser exams. If you are taking three classes or just two, sure, it's doable. 4 classes, yeah, if you want NO life.
QUEEN! Dr McKenna is hands down the best professor and I wish I can take her for 223,224,251! I am someone who has never taken school serious. I looked forward always coming to class because she makes lecture so interesting. If you're not willing to put in the work then don't be complaining, it's a difficult class PERIOD. Slides were easy to follow
