Mediocre. Uninspired lectures. Rarely emphasizes material that will appear on exams. Be prepared to work for your "A".
confusingly worded tests, HORRIBLE diagrams
Took her for General Biology II. Overall, she is an average professor and her class is very hard. Expect to do a lot of reading and memorize the figures, as she will test them on each test. She doesn't emphasize test material and she doesn't use the +/- grading scale. It's still possible to get a good grade if you study hard and go to her office.
General biology is supposed to be general but Jones tests on very specific concepts. I didn't learn anything but how to take her tests.
She doesn't flow well in lecture, her exam material is not emphasized in class. A lot of the diagrams on the exams are from her horrible sketches in class, and are NOT in the text book. Be ready to search online for the diagrams she will test on. It is lame that she does not use plus or minus grading. Why would a teacher not use plus or minus g
ugh. Hated her, old nanny. she should retire. can't teach. exams are way to specific and hard. my semester highest test score was whole semester was 80. she skips way too much material we need to learn. she was the only one teaching my semester, but there is another teacher now. DO NOT TAKE JONES!
This is, by far, the worst teacher I have experienced at UCD. Her teaching methods are ridiculous. She doesn't give + or - grading, she tests on things that aren't covered in class, and is very very specific. I have taken my tests to other bio professors, and they would have given me better scores. Her Biology knowledge is subpar.
The negative comments are unfounded I think. The class is extremely hard only because Biology at UCD has a one year requirement in basic biology that weeds out those who aren't serious, the year is meant to be tough. Cherri Jones studies mammals and the basic bio 2 class covers system biology, she did a great job making class relevant. Recommended
She was very knowledgeable on the subject. Biology isn't an easy course in general; however, if you actually listen to her, read the text, and attend SI this class should be no problem.
Boring lectures, impossible tests, and poor teaching. I would have rather paid somebody to just tell me to read the textbook.
Her lab is much much much better than lecture. Her lecture is difficult and boring but she knows her stuff. Be prepared to study a lot and read the book. Her study guides are helpful. The biggest problem is she is monotone so it's harder to pay attention but she can be very passionate.
Not really into her class. Lecture is boring and lab is very unorganized (she is the lab cord. I have lab with a TA). Take lecture with Duncan or Ferguson. You'll learn more and their classes are better put together. Her lecture is hard to follow. She provides an outline but it doesn't flow well. Really disappointing because I love biology.
I have had Dr. Jones for both Bio II and Principles of Ecology, in addition to Vertebrate zoology and mammalogy. She loves the material she teaches, provides lecture outlines to guide you to important material, and is very approachable if you need help.
I have had Dr. Jones for Mammololgy, and it was a great class that I would recommend to anyone. Ive heard her Gen Bio classes are not all that great, but it could be in part because of the large class size.the upper bio classes are well structured and the tests come from notes and lecture, not the book. I learned alot and she was very knowledgeable
I've had Dr. Jones for Gen bio II, Fundamentals of Ecology and Vertebrate biology. I wouldn't call her an easy teacher, but she's always sure to make sure you understand what you need. She offers lecture outlines and reviews before exams. Sure, if you don't want an easy A she's not the teacher to take, but she knows her stuff. I loved her.
I took Dr. Jones for BIOL 2 and also for vertebrate biology and I adore her. She knows her stuff and gives semi- difficult tests but you will know what you need to when the class is done. She is a very sweet woman and does a good job.
Her lectures were a little boring. The only real problem I had with her is that it didn't feel like she explained things very well. Otherwise, she seems like a nice person, her tests were actually not that bad for a biology class, and the homework was typical of what you would expect in a science class: a lot of reading.
Class is a little boring. Quizzes are random and via clicker, so you can't miss a whole lot of class. She's a nice person, and the tests are fairly easy. You don't have to study very hard for them. Pretty decent for a 3000 level bio class. Also, download the book on the internet. Free PDF version. The price is nuts.
I had her for lab. It was easy but her lab lectures were super boring and I don't think I would take her for the classroom lecture. She is a really nice person though and cares about her students. I would definitely recommend her for lab.
Dr. Jones is great. Anyone who says her class is too hard probably shouldn't be in Biology to begin with. Jones MAKES SURE you understand concepts. She is great during office hours, and responds quickly to email. I definitely recommend her. Those who complain that she's monotone have never actually heard a monotone person before... <3 Jones!
She is really nice and is alway willing to help her students understand the subject better. Her exam's are somewhat difficult but since she is very helpful, you have resources. If you just study off of the notes and follow the book- you will do great, no doubt.
Dr Jones is a great teacher. She knows her stuff and is extremely helpful. If you study the book, her study guides, take notes and go to her office hours for more explanation, there's no way you will not pass her class. Her exams are pretty easy if you study. I had an "A" in her class. Overall she's a great teacher.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had! Grading is inconsistent & unfair. Tests are hard, very specific, & half the material she doesn't cover in class & does not put on review guides. Went into her office asking for help, was incredibly unwilling. No curve, no leniency, yet her class average was a low C to D. STAY AWAY if you care about your GPA!
Dr. Jones is one of the best professors at UCD. She gives extra clear instructions and preparation for the exams. She is also very caring understanding. Her exams are easy if you study her notes and listen carefully to what she sympathized during class. Talk to her outside of class, you will adore her. Comfortable class but you will learn a lot.
Jones was an amazing professor. She explained each subject with in depth detail. There were lecture notes online as well as optional homework, crosswords, and study guides to prepare for exams with.
Dr Jones expects her students to come away from her class having actually learned the material. That said, she provides students with every opportunity to do so. Her lectures cover the material in proper depth and while her exams do fully test the students' understanding, anyone who read the book and paid attention in class should easily have an A.
Dr. Jones is an awesome professor. She is very helpful and nice during office hours and her lectures are very clear. I love that she's clear about what she wants you to know for exams and gives in-class review sessions before tests.
Her outlines are unclearunorganized with diagrams that do not match in the exams. I went to her office for help because I was struggling and she told me it was better to drop her class and take another professor next semester. DO NOT take her class if you want to keep your GPA in a good stand!!! Worst professor I've ever had!!
Monotone, straight out of the book, and not very knowledgeable. Basically she just explains the textbook illustrations, which as you know have perfectly good explanations already. A lot of material, with a vague study guide. Has a test bank from the book's publisher and sometimes attempts to reword them, and then adds a few of her own questions.
So boring, like a BIO 2 automaton. The worst class I have taken here. I was lulled to sleep by her lectures... however, I-Clicker is like 10% of the grade, so you have to go.
Boooorrrring! Dr. Jones is a sweet lady, but that doesn't make for exciting ecology. She reads vocab straight out of the book. Lecture is straight out of the book, rarely is it put into her own words. Her wording on tests is ancient and sometimes it is hard to decipher what she is asking.
Loved Dr. Jones! By far one of the most helpful professors I have ever encountered. She does everything in her power to help students, and make sure they understand assignments and lectures. Quick to respond through email. She is a wonderful woman, passionate about what she does, and strives to ensure student success!
Quick to respond to questions, smart, does have a sense of humor. Also reads directly from the powerpoint slides, definitions and exam questions are hard to understand. No enthusiasm in her delivery. Took her course over the summer, she skipped parts of chapters we were tested on to teach the 'tough' parts only, had to teach myself the rest.
Her lectures can feel very long and dry. Overall her class is not too difficult and many have found it more useful to simply study at home. p.s. Take a neck pillow to prevent soreness
Dr. Jones, while knowledgable in Ecology, is an incredibly boring lecturer. The majority of the class is quiz and exam based. Very few homework assignments. Exams and quizzes are very poorly worded and are oftentimes confusing. Do yourself a favor and READ THE TEXTBOOK. She tests on material not covered (or poorly covered) in class.
I really liked Dr. Jones's Ecology class. I found her exams to be fairly easy as someone who attended every class and kept up on the reading. I think ecology is just not everyone's favorite subject, but as someone who really likes it, I enjoyed her class. She didn't try to trick students, which was nice.
Dr. Jones is a really nice person, but her class is uneventful and not exciting, she speaks very monotoned (which makes things very dull) and she makes a lot of mistakes in her lecture outlines, on her tests, and most importantly in her grading. If you take her class make sure you go over everything she graded, there are usually many errors.
Her exams have fill in the blanks with no word bank and multiple choices. If you don't study the lecture outlines & study from the book, it becomes very difficult to pass her exams. Quiz every day covering the material from the class before. She horrible at organizing so stay on top of what she loads into canvas. Makes many errors on tests & exams.
Absolutely adore her. She is understanding and flexible, but she expects you to work for your good grade. Her quizzes are helpful, and her exams are straight-forward. She loves the subjects she teaches and gives out amazing handouts to fill in the blank and follow along in lecture. She even makes sure you have a full class to review before exams.
I love Dr. Jones. She always made me want to come to class. She was understanding and flexible, as I have a child at home and sometimes would have 3 exams on the same day. Spend the time to introduce yourself! The material is straight forward (exams, lectures) and I love her handouts to fill out during class! Plus, crosswords for study review? YAY!
I LOVE HER! I had a family emergency that took me out of school for almost 2 weeks. She was flexible and absolutely supportive. Always eager to assist me if I had questions. The subject is fantastic and she shows a passion for it! The exams and quizzes are fairly easy if you study her lecture handouts (great for active listening in lecture!
I really loved Dr. Jones class! She does a really good job outlining exactly what you need and don't need to know. She also very helpful and sweet. I would definitely recommend her class
I loved Dr. Jones. She is really sweet and her lecture outlines are one of the most effective ways I have learned a college course. She is very very specific with her material and is clear about her expectations. STUDY for your tests. Do it. Also, quizzes. Lots of pop quizzes. Best bio teacher ever.
She wants it here way or the high way. She does not clarify very well what she wants on the pop quizzes. This makes it very hard to be certain of her answers which lowers grades. She does not clarify what she wants which can be very frustrating. Prepare for a tough class with not a lot of room for error. It a very frustrating class.
Dr. Jones really cares about her students, but her lectures can be boring and confusing at times. She does provide a lot of out of class assignments to help you with the material (HW, crosswords) and I highly suggest doing those cause they helped me get A's on the tests. She grades very hard, you basically have to know the material word for word.
Don't really care for the teacher. Is very specific on what she wants. Didn't find her to be understanding with students, specifically me. Either put it on the syllabus or don't go back and say "you can't do that".
Love Dr. Jones. Her lectures may not be exciting, but they are straightforward and she is always on track. She gives lecture outlines for each class and her tests come straight from these and end of chapter questions. There is no confusion in this class. Her grading is reasonable. Her graders can be harsh, but you can submit a regrade for exams.
Dr. Jones really caters to all learning styles, which can be a little slow at times, but she is truly invested in our learning. Her lecture outlines are fantastic tools, but require that you attend class. Grading can be tricky; 3 exams & 1 final comprise most of the points, but the final exam questions are directly from the prior exams...
You are expected to teach yourself the material. Going to class wont help you understand. Average was a D on her exam which clearly indicates students are not understanding the material. Take it online or with another professor
Very old style. Professor Jones has difficulty explaining subjects however can tell you definitions easily. Hard to deal with. The amount of work you have to put in is not worth it specially for all pre-meds. Grading is unfair and she only follows syllabus policies for some students. I would recommend taking this class with another professor.
Dr. Jones is amazing! If you're willing to put in the work, then her class is an easy A. She provides lecture outlines which are almost identical to test/quiz material. Her tests can sometimes be very detail oriented, so you will need to devote time to studying everything!
SHE is very bad teacher. Lot of HW and only a few of them are grading and You do not lnow which so you have to do all of them
Dr. Jones makes me loathe Biology. Not a fan of her tests, quizzes, homework, or lecture style.
Made Ecology insufferable. Lectures were beyond boring, homework was confusing and she offered little help. Book was terrible. Pop quizzes almost every day made attendance mandatory. Material was not hard, but her class was so retched that I hated going and studying for. Do yourself a favor and take it online, or with a diff. prof.
Dr. Jones is a very caring professor even though her class size is massive. She takes the time to address all questions, fully explain and clarify her material, and works with her students to ensure they are successful. She knows how to keep the lecture interesting, and has her class well-designed.
Dr. Jones couldnt tell you what day of the week it was. She showed up for class but wasnt sure what time it started or got over at. The tests are basically 90% short answer and cover 25% of the material. The only reason Dr. Jones can still teach is the class hasnt changed in 25 years shes taught it.
Cheri tries to bring you up saying you can do it but skimps out on lectures. She says her pop quizzes are based on the last lecture but sometimes they go into the book (yeah, read.) Thanks for killing my hope in getting far in this study.
A very respectful, courteous, knowledgeable professor who truly cares about her students and wants them to succeed. She is a proponent of fair play and inclusiveness, and tries to include everyone in the class as much as possible. Her methods are quite traditional, and she is very friendly and easy to approach for help.
Dr. Jones is passionate about biology and it shows. If you study the materials she provides you, you will do well on her exams. She does expect precision in the terminology you choose for answering questions, which can be challenging for students that cannot always find the exact word. She will give partial credit if you can convey the idea.
"She wants it here way or the high way. She does not clarify very well what she wants on the pop quizzes. This makes it very hard to be certain of her answers which lowers grades. She does not clarify what she wants which can be very frustrating. Prepare for a tough class with not a lot of room for error. .." Turns out I was wrong. She is great.
Dr. Jones is a sweetheart, and very passionate about zoological topics. She's evenhanded, accessible, always helpful, and very courteous. She expects students to act professionally, respectfully, and work hard. If you do what is expected of you, and she generally makes those expectations clear and concise, you will learn a lot and do well.
There are 13 quizzes and one is dropped by the end. They are unannounced, but sometimes she will add a quiz to the grade book before you have class. You can't miss class because she doesn't post lectures until she is done and every quiz is based off of the previous lecture. Your overall grade is based on test scores, but one will be dropped.
You can start studying way in advance for her class but your exam scores end up low or just ok. She is such a hard grader! Your answer can be correct but if it's not the way she would have worded it then she counts it completely wrong. Way too hard of a grader. I'm a straight A student & have never experienced a worse professor.
One of my favorite professors thus far. She provides lecture outlines which are easy to follow and fill out.I dont recommend skipping class as there are daily quizzes over the last lecture. Read the book and complete HW and study guides. They are key to passing her tests. Dont just copy the answers and actually take time to review the material.
Great lecturers. Encourages asking questions. quizzes, HW not mandatory. Her exams are pretty tough because the questions look similar but all material is from her lectures. Out of all the bio professors, I got the most from her class!
Don't bother with a book, she doesn't use it as a guideline and you can't use it to back up her lectures. She isn't specific about what she's going to cover so no prepping for lectures. Random pop quizzes that there's no way to prepare for. The only grades are pop quizzes and tests based off her lectures. If your wording isn't like hers its wrong.
An old sweetheart, but is will not budge for you so don't try. Nothing wrong with her lectures-- only that her voice makes you want to doze off. Come to every class because she does pop quizzes based off her last lecture, buy scantrons, and go to her SI sessions! If not, go to an open lab. Hw not graded but sometimes she does random extra credit
Hard grader when compared with lecture and quiz difficulty. Does not prepare you adequately to test concepts.
There are weekly unannounced quizzes that are 6 points each. She drops your lowest three scores at the end of the semester. She is a very nice old lady that is very passionate about all things biology. She's very helpful at her office hours. My only complaint is her method of grading. She is very specific with what answers she accepts.
Great Bioligy Prof. If you come to class and do the homework (not graded) you will get an A and you will learn the material. Her tests require that you learn the information but if you do the in term exams and the final are a breeze. I would take her again!
Jones is an excellent professor, although she makes you work for it. On exams she likes specific answers, but going to her office hours helps a lot for the these.
She is an adorable old lady. She cared about how we were doing and always asked if we understood the material, or if she was going too fast. I got a bad grade because I never studied and didn't really focus in class, but that's not her fault. If you were to actually listen and study, then the quizzes and exams are a BREEZE! Just don't be like me ;)
One of the worst professors I've ever had. She always acted as though you were dumb when you asked questions and got mad when no one had the answer because she could not teach well. Was very hard to speak to in person because she is condescending.
She's not the greatest instructor, she's approachable, but every time I asked questions about homework she told me what to do and how to do it, but still marked me wrong after always getting clarification? She is a very critical grader so I wouldn't recommend her class. Also her Learning Objectives for each chapter are not always on exams.
Dr. Jones is very passionate about what she teaches and it makes the class so much better. She is a very understanding professor and will accommodate to anything you may run into. During my semester with her, I was getting evicted from my apartment and she did everything in her power to help me in her class. I highly recommend this professor.
I really enjoyed her class. You definitely need to know the material for the exams and she has marked off points if your answers are wordy but I plan to take classes with her in the future :)
She treats like high schoolers and is unwilling to adapt to student, it her way or no way at. The only she does right is the lecture online. I never seen so many people walk out or not pay attention because she not teaching anything new she is teaching high school biology and makes the test college level and yells at us when we dont pass the test.
Rude. Uses TA's to do all her grading and then makes you make sure they did it right. I had to advocate for myself and submit re-grade requests frequently to get the grades I deserved. Refers you to the syllabus instead of clarifying things when you ask her in person. Will give you zeros for things like putting wrong test no. on scantron.
One of the best professors Ive had. She makes it easy to understand the material. Because of the pop quizzes, I am caught up on all the material. The slides are not wordy so you have to pay attention to what she says and it makes it easier for me to pay attention during lectures. The homework she gives isnt lengthy.
Shes a really great professor. I found that in her class, she really forced me to learn the material before the exam because you have to pay attention in lecture in order to fill in your notes. She had lecture outlines created and it made it easier to study and take notes. I would definitely take more classes with her if possible.
Horrible professor that loves to trick you but swears she's being fair and has no sympathy no matter how much your arguments make sense. Gives HW on topics she hasn't lectured on. Marks answers wrong that aren't worded they way she would word it on a test. I've never had to work so hard for what should have been an easy A.
Her tests are so specific and she's such a hard grader. She gives you chances to have regrades but it will be rare for her to give you points back, even if you answer with what is said on her lecture outlines she'll still mark you wrong. Not a fan of her, if you want good grades and to actually learn take a different professor
Respects her students & doesn't talk down to them. Her recommendation helped me get into dental school.
She is a very enh professor. If you put in a decent amount of work you'll get the A. prep 30minutes-hour per quiz, and just focus on her "learning objectives" from each chapter. Thats where exam material comes from. Her lectures can get a bit boring and skipping now and then won't cost you. Make sure to do hw on time she has a no budge policy
for exams tells students to explain in their own words but takes points off if their wording is not the exact same as hers. For homework, the explanation needs to be the same as hers or you will lose a majority of points; claims she does not understand. She is nice but a really hard grader
Professor Jones is very kind and means well. The issue here is that she doesn't come off as teaching college students and it seems more like elementary students. Prepare yourself for childish game exam reviews. The questions on homework assignments, quizzes, and exams all come off as very unclear. There have been correct answers marked as incorrect
Dr. Jones definitely cares about her students, that much I can attest to. My complaint with her is that he grading criteria is very vague. She expects you to use verbatim what she says as your answers on tests. Quizzes are easy though if you do the reading, as they are multiple choice.
if you wanna take her parasitology class because it's a requirement, but your goal was to learn more about parasites affecting humans don't take this class. she is an ecologist. she will lean heavily on ecological issues, which are pointless and useless. If you live for the frogs and the plants and pre-vet, take it. if you're Pre-med AVOID. useless
Where do I even begin with her? I took this class twice, which means I had the material to study before starting it the second time around, and it was just as bad. Her lecture notes and quiz/exam questions don't add up. Her lectures are EXTREMELY boring. She is rude to those who don't have an established relationship with her. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!
very nice ecologist. she is kind and will be personable with you. she is very kind. she will get to know you. she will clarify things. however, be ready to learn ecological heavy subjects.
Great, had her for two classes in the same semester. Tests are taken almost entirely from the lecture outlines but make sure to review questions at the end of the chapter in the textbook since they're fair game. Quizzes are more specific and difficult compared to exams.
Avoid, unless you generally don't care if you have a professor that's rude and weird. She makes the material harder than it needs to be. Condescending. Teaching style is very specific to her own way and is unwilling to work with students (but says all the words to make it seem like she is willing). I wish I didn't have to take her classes
