Texts were either strange or EASY. Nice to talk to but papers are difficult.
Challanging. Be prepared to do work and write on some more complicated topics.
LOTS of reading! She grades essays easily... but leads poor discussion topics..
too mcuh reading, too many essays, changed syllabus halfway through
Not a fun teacher, makes you talk in class, but still boring
she teaches more about history rather than english, she is queen of redos
As long as you can BS, you can survive this class. She does change the syllabus, but she's easily influenced if you ask for a break. If you can BS papers, you can handle her real easily.
Bulldog Fish. But she's incredibly nice and personable. Got all A's on my papers so I was happy.
grades hard...lot of reading...take only if you read a lot. and watch for her grading on your papers she's rough!
She expects students to think critically. There is reading that she wants students to analyze and write about. The reading material was interesting and she takes an feminist and ethnic perspective to teaching.
She's a really great teacher. Just pay attention to what she says in class about the readings, (most of what she says can be used to answer the questions on her exam) participate in the class discussions, and do the readings.
She is really fun and not super serious. We had a lot of laughs. Just participate in the discussions a lot and she'll love you. I got an A and I am terrible at deep meanings behind readings. BS helps too!
This can be an interesting class, but the reading selections could be better. She doesn't grade to hard, she give you what you worked for. She is funny a good part of the time. Its worth it.
Dr. Pollard is a genuine, and nice person. However, he abilities to grade confuse me, it seems like she just slaps a random letter on the top of a 7 page paper. I'm not a big fan of her teaching
She's boring and refuses to improve her attempt at a discussion class even though it doesn't work. She is unorganized, takes forever to return papers, and lets class out late every single day! She is very, very unhelpful with group projects also.
She just slaps a grade on papers. She doesn't care.... She is totally unprepared, but she is a nice person. Not so great a professor--but nice. Tends to be easier on the guys. I like her, but hated the class.
She is a very nice lady. Class discussion is awesome and is willing to hear everyone's comments. If you put effort into your papers she will give you a good grade. Readings are very interesting and she is very knowledgeable in her feild. TAKE HER!!!
This class is ridiculous soo much work, and she is very unclear. Never know what is due and when it is due so much to keep up with. You are pretty much on your own. Goodluck!!!
very knowledgeable in Afro-Am lit. be prepared to discuss readings. she doesn't like being taken advantage of, but is willing to help sincere students. she treats her students like competant adults and doesn't baby. TAKE HER FOR AFRO-AM LITERATURE COURSES

I have taken multiple classes with her. I think she is a great prof. She treats you like an adult and understands that you have other classes. She is willing to work with you. She does give readings and expects them to be done, but she is fair and respectful a great prof.
Dr. Pollard is a very easygoing prof. if you need help with your papers GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. if you go to her office hours she will help you so much with your paper. do read the materials because she gives quizzes. the books we read for this class was awesome.
Dr. Pollard was great! She was always late for class, always had a funny story to tell us, and was interested in what we had to say. Very great class-learned a lot in a non-threatening manner. She is open for suggestions and is a brilliant woman. I never went to class and she gave me a B+.
Her classes are mainly discussions so if you don't like displaying your opinions-- don't take her. however, in my opinion the class runs better when it's run by the students with the professor acting as a tour-guide and not a dictator-- this is how doctor pollard teaches her classes.
Ummm yeah she is definately **** against white people. Don't take the class, especially with her. The curriculum for the class is bogus and so is she. STAY AWAY !
She is pretty cool. She has a lot of quizes, but she always lets you know when they will be, i really liked her. I would definitly take her again.
She is an awesome professor. This class is alot of work, but she is a very easy grader if you do the work. Dont buy the books cuz you dont need them. Just keep up with the syllabus and you will do fine, all she looks for is creativity
Yeah.... sure she's a great teacher if you wanna talk about re-runs of Sex in The City. And if you have a simple enough class schedule where you can dedicate 50% of your time to keep up with her crazy, disorganized, and all out confusing class....You want her! Have her! ....cause she's a headache..STAY AWAY! for your own sanity...Its not worth it.

What I'll say is that yes, she can be a bit rude to you if you are an idiot, so if you are an idiot, don't take her class. She is funny. She knows what she is talking about, and I would definitely take the class again.
Great class!
Love Dr. Pollard! Takes a while to warm up to her, but after awhile you'll realize that she's really on your side and she's not out to get you at all...be ready to give your opinions her classes are all about discussion.
Great class. Would highly recommend.
She presents the material in a coherent and interesting manner. Class discussions are never boring and she's always attentive to questions.
Wonderful class, Multi ethnic lit, great teacher, very personable, learned alot. LOT of writing, but guided and helpful.
extremely biased. i had her for african american lit. and being a white person that is not ashamed of being white i was constantly in the doghouse in this class. any impartial opinions contradicting the views of the african authors were quickly dismissed by professor pollard on the basis that i didnt understand because i wasn't 'black'. skip it
Great Teacher and class.
dr pollard is wonderful!!! she doesnt like stupid people...and i guess some COLLEGE STUDENTS have a problem with that???? her assignments are easy if you can do the work -- she gives you input on everything you do -- amazingly intelligent and witty -- TAKE DR POLLARD FOR THIS CLASS!!!
Really good teacher. Three easy projects for the entire semester. She often cancelled class and let you leave early.
yikes, did not like this class. Extremely boring, for example: she gave us a 30 page article on research papers. yawn. She ended up crying on the second day of class while discussing this article which made things really awkward from then on.
I had Dr. Pollard and am was highly disappointed. Luckily I had taken other creative writing classes before hers because I never would have taken any more after her. She does not give proper feedback on people's work but more her opinions if she liked it or not. The other students did not get a chance to speak since she did it all. DO NOT TAKE HER!
Dr. Pollard is great! She definitely has a unique sense of humor. The books she chooses to work with in class are excellent. At times, class can seem a little disorganized, but that's her style, so just go with it. I would definitely recommend taking a class with Dr. P. if you have the chance.
She was a disappointment for me as an English major. She brought in a book of poetry about "Jersey Shore" and thought it was great -- this made it impossible to take her seriously.
Always late for class. Assigns too much reading for nothing. Two papers that she grades harshly and that's your grade for the class. Her in class discussions are very boring. She may be a nice person, but a horrible professor. Avoid if you can.
Papers never clearly explained, and hardly ever went over anything useful in class. Difficult mid-term and final which were based on theories we skimmed over in class briefly. Would not recommend her at all.
There is a high degree of creative freedom in her class. Deadlines and assignments are flexible. I wouldn't say that this class was easy but do the work and you will do fine.
Dr. Pollard's class isn't the easiest, but if you attend regularly and complete assigned readings BEFORE class, her lectures are really great and insightful. 206 was a great way to gain cultural insight while obtaining critical literary knowledge. Would definitely take a class of hers again!
She gets off track a lot in class but all of the assigned readings are really interesting.
Absolutely one of the worst professors I have ever experienced. She is extremely disorganized, states her opinion on everything, does not explain the paper assignments, expects students to do all these homework assignments on readings from the book--but yet we don't discuss it in class. She's usually late or absent. We're all super confused. Ugh.
Agreed with the person below. Hardly shows up to class. Assignments aren't clearly explained, and most of us have no idea what she expects of us. Papers need A LOT of sources, otherwise you fail, regardless of quality. Book is manditory for assignments. Waste of a class.
Pollard is a hot mess. She assigns a lot of reading but you don't actually have to do it. She takes attendance every class. She has no clue how to work her computer & spends half the class trying to search for poems on Google. If you show up, you can't fail.
Dr. Pollard is ridiculous. She is no help to the students and will never respond to your emails! Her exams are very difficult and is a very tough grader. She is rarely prepared for class. Avoid at all costs.
She gave a few take home assignments that were easy with the help of Google. Chances are, you won't need to read the book. I don't think I opened any of the SIX that she made us purchase. Still passed with a high B. Could've gotten an A if I didn't slack off on one of the take-home tests. Make sure you have something else to do in class...
She means well but is an EXTREMELY bad creative writing teacher. She tells you what you can and can't write about and made a kid rewrite his entire story simply because she didn't like the content. I've heard she isn't used to teaching CRW and is generally an English teacher; either way, it's clear she doesn't understand how to teach CRW.
Super easy class, super awful teacher. Doesn't communicate clearly at all & makes changes last minute. She cancelled class for a week after getting injured & on Wednesday night said that plans changed & we had class the next day. Constantly made changes to the terms of assignments & presentations. Never on time. You'll hate it, but you'll get an A.
Dr. Pollard's class is so boring. She rambles on the whole time about nothing. Doesn't respond to emails, and her grading criteria is so confusing. She basically turned a writing class into a reading class. Theres readings due every class that she's just goes over, no quizzes or anything. Don't take her.
I've never felt the need to review a teacher until now.. Avoid this professor. She is a nice woman, but there is simply 0 structure to this course. There also is no communication. And this makes the class more difficult, not easier. Schedule with caution.
Seems like a nice lady, but not organized at all. Cancels class frequently and does not make objectives or assignments clear. It's really a shame because she seems like a likable person, but she needs to buckle down and get organized.
By far the worst experience with a teacher, she is super un organized and gets off track a lot. she grades super hard for someone who doesn't even teach the class. take her if you want but just be aware.
She is sarcastic, hilarious, and is passionate about Afr. American Culture (which I love!) She wants to see you succeed, is available for help, and wants you to learn from her. Make sure you read and participate to keep the lecture going! Also, follow her pace. She sometimes is all over the place but is overall still a wonderful professor.
I had her for 50 minute classes; with a longer class time she would be a lot better. A tad disorganized, syllabus changed constantly and we were behind a lot. She's got a ton of experience and knowledge. The class benefits a lot from people willing to engage in discussion. Tests were hard, but were take-home. You have to be a good writer.
Don't take her class shes the worst she is not organized her grading is not fair!!!!!!!!!!!
Really disorganized professor, she takes absolutely forever to grade and you cant tell how your overall grade is going to stand until the professors have to submit grades the Tuesday after finals week. She isn't clear with due dates for the assignments at all and you can basically disregard the syllabus you receive at the beginning of the semester.
This professor is very disorganized and never tells you what homework is due, you are just expected to look at the syllabus for everything you need to do. She is a very hard grader, and it is hard to get A's on things. For a popular culture writing class, this is NOT the professor to take.
Dr. Pollard was by far the worst professor I have ever had in my entire life. She is so hard to contact out of class, her assignments and grading criteria are so vague. You never know what to expect from her when you turn something in. Could be a B or a 20%. If you want an easy writing class, stay away from her class.
The seven weeks we met in person she was a mess. She cancelled class then uncancelled it the day before. Half of our semester was online and she managed to show up at least 5 mins late to each class. She was a decent grader and seemed like a very nice person, just not a great professor. Also, scheduled zoom meetings during and after finals week.
I would avoid her at all costs. She's insanely disorganized and this will affect you if you "can't keep up" with her lack of organization. She assigns way too much work and readings... It's really bad and I'm appalled that she's a University Professor.
Very nice woman and funny in class but easily one of the worst prof's I have had. she just seems to not care about students. Also, NO grading scale. Didn't respond to half of my emails, even ones reaching out because she input my. grade wrong. I have never rated a professor before but am hoping someone reads this and avoids her classes.
Worst professor I've ever had. Does not explain how to do any assignments at all and never grades papers and homework. The class is just a big mess, and she usually goes over the classes end time. Very disorganized, please just don't take her.
I dont specifically think she is a bad professor, she is just disorganized and does not give clear instructions. If you ask questions, she will do it. She does not mind helping you, but you must reach out to her. There are 2 papers are usually 6 to 8 pages long & 4 hws are 1 page long. She doesnt grade stuff quickly. Shes very accommodating
SHE WAS SO BORING AND DIDN'T TEACH US ANYTHING, JUST EXPECTED US TO KNOW HOW TO WRITE PAPERS. NO FEEDBACK FROM HER. HER CLASS WAS THE WORST THING, ALL MY CLASSMATES WERE CONFUSED ABOUT DUE DATES AND DISLIKED HER.
WARNING DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR SHE WILL RUIN YOUR SEMESTER AND MAKE U WANT TO DROP OUT.
This professor was terrible at engaging the class, gave such little instruction for assignments, and didn't prioritize her students. She would leave class for personal phone calls and even cancel class when we had projects due. Her feedback was never helpful and she drones on for the whole class period.
This class was not necessarily difficult, but if you can avoid, I would. There are no clear due dates nor a clear and set explanation of some assignments. She is very nice, but this class added unnecessary stress for me this semester.
This class was disappointing. Dr. Pollard doesn't respond to emails, changes due dates, and every page of instructions for the papers says different things making it unclear. She does not grade things quickly, so expect to wait til the end of the semester to know your grade. The course itself is easy, I would just recommend any other professor.
She reads straight off the book and it's always a class discussion. She's inconsiderate with the amount of workload she gives and expects you to assume what she wants from her assignments. DO NOT TAKE HER. She claims to have over twenty years of teaching but her experience doesn't guarantee herself to be a good teacher--she's not.
She sets no guidelines for the insane amount of work given. She is inconsiderate towards students and their lives. She is not accessible and all she does is lecture. Every other class is on Zoom or cancelled with extra hours of work. Her 'tests' are insane, taking up to 10 hours to complete. She is the worst professor I've had. You learn nothing
I took CRW 302 AND I LOVED IT. Dr. Pollard is amazing. All of these bad reviews are either liars, racists, or just freshmen with no work ethic. Welcome to college! It's time to grow up, people! Dr. Pollard is so fun and nice, and her feedback on my poetry was really constructive and encouraging. Just do the work and be civil, it's not hard.
Does not grade assignments on time, has a lot of classes on Zoom at the last minute. Does not give clear instructions of assignments either. I do not recommend taking this professor.
I took Dr. Pollard in Fall 2024 as a Gen Ed and I had to drop the class because of how confusing and frustrating she was. All the directions for our assignments were unclear and she rarely responded to emails before the assignments were due. We had an online class and she spent the entire time creating our homework/lesson plan for the next class.
I never rate professors but genuinely she is the worst professor I've ever had. She's a very nice woman but she is insanely disorganized, changes the syllabus often, is unclear when giving assignments, and never answers emails. Every assignment she's given I've been confused about due dates and what I'm supposed to do. Don't take this class
She is the worst professor I have had so far. Dr. Pollard is not a bad person but is an awful professor. Her tendency to hand out projects without explaining them makes the class confusing. She does not explain what she wants and is a very tough grader which makes things difficult. Dr. Pollard's class is just her mumbling! Do not take her!!
This is by far the most frustrating professor and class I have ever had. She never grades on time, no direction on assignments, no enthusiasm, etc... She grades an assignment and gives you the opportunity to fix it for a better grade; but somehow, it's still going to be wrong. She never answers emails. This class was the biggest waste of my time.
Unnecessarily nitpicky grader for a gen-ed course, extremely unclear about any and all assignments and will likely be upset if you ask her about it.
She was always very disorganized, showed up late to class many times and often cancelled class to be on Zoom. Never answered emails. Lectures were boring and she says so much but so little at the same time. Little to no instruction on papers/projects, my classmates and I were often confused about due dates. Easy but slow grader. Frustrating class.
Not the best prof. I've ever hard she is DIFFICULT with grading and does not explain anything what so ever. I would not recommend, although she does let you fix what you messed up prior even then it is. unlikely to get an A.
This class is by no means a hard course, but Dr. Pollard is one of the most disorganized professors I've ever had. She never clarifies what she wants for projects, due dates for assignments, and will cancel in-person class for a Zoom meeting at the very last minute. Lectures are also boring as all hell. Would very much avoid this class if possible.
Probably the worst professor I have ever had. Never ever take her if you can help it. Gave me low grades on assignments for small issues because she graded out of 2 points. I have never struggled so much in a 100 level class.
Had the class last semester. Not happy with this course. There are no clear grading outlines. Emails go unanswered. Rewriting the paper and handing in a paper after reworking it to the suggestions given gets nowhere. Class gets cancelled last second with busy work given. Expectations are not clear. Very frustrating.
Not recommended. No clarity. No consistancy. Professor highly unorganized, class called off last second, never responded to emails, grading never explained. She talked in circles. Worst class ever.
DO NOT ENROLL WITH THIS PROFESSOR. Her assignment instructions are extremely unclear, and she does not respond to emails when asked for clarification. She requires students to submit assignments through both Google Drive and D2L, which creates confusion about where to upload work. If I could give a zero-star rating, I would.
