She really takes the time to make sure that the students understand what she is talking about. The class is very enjoyable and easy to follow.
Chery was fantastic! History can be dull, but she made it interesting. Chery managed to talk about Women in US history without slandering men, or skirting around the issues. I recommend her to any and everyone.
Cherry is fantastic. Not easy by any means, but very clear and informative, and a lot of fun. Really good at handling a class and very approachable, both personally and in terms of class material.
Great history teacher. Her expectations are clear, she is prepared, and is a good lecturer. History of China is a good class, but if it's three hours at night it's real hard. May be on maternity leave soon.
Would take again! Super teacher very informitive. Chery is a plus to my college experience. I cant say enough about her and yeah she is hot!
I took Hist 14 a year ago. It was really informative. A lot of the knowlege is still with me affecting my daily outlook. Cheri really cares about her students.
She was a great teacher and very helpful. I enjoyed the class very much!!
The best teacher I had in all my college career, even after leaving Cabrillo and getting my bachelors. The lessons are so interesting she inspired me to become a history major. She also cared about the students success more than any other teacher I've ev
SHE TOTALLY ROCKS! Take the Chinese or Japanese history classes, they are difficult courses but if you like history you wont mind. Class is very interesting.

I LOVE HER! SHE IS A GREAT PROFESSOR WHO WILL HELP YOU IN ANY WAY SHE CAN. SHE IS LAX ON DUE DATES IF YOU TALK TO HER ABOUT IT, AND SHE IS VERY INTERESTING! SHE GIVES A LOT OF HOMEWORK BUT ALL OF IT IS INTERESTING! TAKE BARKEY...AND IF YOU ARE INTO FILM TAKE HER HUSBAND DAVID SULLIVAN, HE'S COOL TOO!
She's a little hyper and she tries to stuff in way more matieral then time permits, but she's very helpful and understanding.
She is GREAT! The classes are fun and interesting. There is some homework to keep up with: reading assignments with a few short questions. She accepts late work. Her tests involve short answer essays. Who what where when why. I LOVED her class. Women are left out of most history classes, so TAKE this one!!
This professor is fantastic. Sometimes she is all over the place, but that's because she is very passionate about Chinese history. She has personal experience that consists of living in Asia for long periods of time. We read three novels and a short text book. The work load was tedious but I am forever thankful for the knowledge I have gained.
The best teacher I've ever had! Fascinating. It was a demanding class (particularly after a hard day of work) but she kept me on the edge of my seat. Her first-person description of the Tianamen Square events was the highlight of the class.
GREAT TEACHER so nice and fun! She knows what she is doing VERY HELPFUL in anything you need. There is some work if you just do and show up you will do fine. There is lots of reading but trust me you will like this class she is SO GREAT very nice lady!
She has a PHD and thinks everyone needs to work as hard as she did. She talks too fast and is all over the place, so it's super hard to take notes. She has a million things to say but never enough time. If you question her she says WELCOME TO COLLEGE.
Her lectures are pretty disorganized. It's impossible to take clear notes in her class. She kind of rambles. She grades hard on quizzes and homework. She's sweet though and wants to help, and if you try you can get a good grade in her class. She's a nice person, and pretty energetic.
You will actually remember what you learned in this class. She's enthusiastic and the reading is worth your time. Highly recommended.
she is a very hard grader, with too much homework.
One of the best professors I have ever had. Definitely the best history professor I have had.
Cherie is a really nice woman. she requires oral participation in the form of speaking 3 times per class, which was too much for me. the hw is a bit extensive but she tends to be very lenient with due dates. very interesting class and great lecturer.
She gives way to much homework and test plus She's a hard grader.
She is very nice but is very full of herself. She gives out too much homework like her class is the only one students have. Her finals are relevant but take super long. i take test pretty fast but even i stay the entire time and have left the tests and essays unfinished
I didn't find her class or grading to be too difficult, do the readings and homework and you will find the weekly quizzes simple. Maybe a lot of reading, but Chery is trying to prepare you for upper division/transfer and she does of good job of it! Her classes can be a bit challenging, but SO worth it. This is what college it about folks...
Not very dynamic in presentation, much of the homework feels like "busy work," class has a "high school" feel to it. Interesting material in the class has kept me in it.
There is a lot of homework. It doesn't really seem relevant most of the time. she does not teach in a linear fashion and is rather hard to follow in lecture. she is a very nice person and very open to questions. she will gladly explain what she is talking about but gets off topic easily.
She's a hard grader and gives tons of homework and quizzes. Tests are short answer and essay. I enjoyed the class but had to be there every day and take lots of notes. She did incorporate field trips which was a nice change for a college class.
wonderful professor. so intelligent. Has lived a fascinating life, and incorporates her experiences into her teaching. She speaks quickly, and requires you to take a lot of notes, but this is a college course, and HISTORY at that, you should expect to do a lot of reading and writing. Her section of this course is so interesting and well presented.
Chery has a lot of knowledge about what she teaches and that shines through in class. Her midterm was extremely long, but overall her quizzes aren't so bad as long as you do the reading. I really liked having her as a teacher and want to take her again!
Was pretty disappointed with her. She's disorganized and assignments were often unclear. Lots of typos on handouts. Her portion of the class was supposed to cover Asian history but only really covered Israel and the Hmong people. Would have preferred a more general history of Asia, which I think most expected. Nice lady, but wouldn't recommend her.
I never really liked history before i took a class with chery. She is a little bit of a hard teacher however if you take the time to do the homework its a pretty easy class. Chery gives a lot of chances for extra credit too. over all I had a really good time in her calss.
Unsatisfactory: Too much busywork, quizzes on insignificant details, no comments on returned work. Frequent jr-high level videos. Monotone or inaudibile lectures. Handouts poorly organized. Class seemed very pre-college. A chore, not a challenge for the capable student.
Gotta read a bunch of books, some of which are a real chore. Gotta study your A$$ off for the final. Basically have to write nonstop for an hour. Her section of the class was not nearly as interesting as the African history section. I'm glad i got thru it but not sure if i will take her classes again.
I took her women's history class and really enjoyed it! The only thing is the assigned work. It was not hard or difficult, it was simply overwhelming. for the midterms and final you had to memorize so much yet actually used so much little. It was easy though because you knew exactly what was going to be on it. I recommend her! Good class!
Lots of fun. Tough homework and quizzes, graded fairly leniently, and she gives comprehensive study guides for the tests so you're never surprised. Throws candy. Textbooks aren't conventional-style so they're cheaper and easier to read. Lots of fun.
She is a great instructor. Very very helpful with average college level homework assignments. There is no textbook, just a few books to read. Exams are based on reading and lecture, but for the most part, I really enjoyed having her as a professor
Cherie is a wonderful professor, truly cares about learning. The class was always interesting. She includes a lot of fun and unusual classroom experiences, like food parties and field trips. Gotta take her.
She is great! She helps you so much to understand the class! Class is very fun assignments are not hard but very learning and rewarding I'm not a history person and I really loved her class it's really fun she cracks jokes and is a strong teacher
Chery is hard, and She can be really confusing. She often looses her focus and creates confusion among her students. She uses power point, but flips through them so fast you cant write anything down and it just gets more confusing. She is also a VERY hard grader, and expects you to know every part of every term she says in class on the exam!
Don't expect this to be a breeze through and an easy A. Show up to every class, ask questions, and stay on top of the reading and you will be fine. She expects a lot out of you, but has prepared me for transfer more than any other teacher. She cares about her students and is more than willing to help. Absolutely awesome woman
I do not suggest this class. She treats the class as if they are a bunch of middle school kids. Watching movies and reviewing homework does not constitute teaching. If you want to be treated as an adult, and actually have lectures and engaged learning, I do not suggest Barkey.
I love Cherie, and she is responsible for converting me to a history fan! I have taken two of her classes (2B and 14) and they were both entertaining and educational. She is spunky and very intelligent, but sometimes goes off on tangents. You always learn a lot! Lots of reading, but it is a college course so I expect it. Take her class!!
You have to attend class, it's part of your grade. You have to take notes (you'll need to study them for the exams. Tests every week. You learn a lot about Asia. A very interesting class, I enjoyed it. Do the extra credit. Exams are NOT easy. Know your stuff. I enjoyed her class very much.
This class was not an easy A. There is a lot of reading and writing, as with most history courses, but Cherie is very engaging. She is knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Great class!!
I loved her Chinese history class, it was super interesting and help my attention even though it was a 3 hour history night class. This teacher has turned soemthing that I thought was boring into a super interesting subject. She also prepares you for going into university which I can not thank her enough for. She's a great teacher! Thanks Cherie!
Lectures are disorganized, and too fast to take accurate notes.
Yes Chery gives lots of reading and writing assignments. Yes her lectures are fast and can be disorganized at times. But shes friendly; and if you like a challenge, then you'll like her. I got an A, and I found myself completing some of the writing homework an hour before class. If you read everything and participate in class, you'll do just find.
I was never a big fan of history, but I loved her class (which is also taught by Michael Pebworth). It is a lot of work, but I didn't mind. She is so passionate and knowledgeable about her subject matter. She is also very helpful and accommodating if you need assistance or support. I highly recommend her as a teacher.
This class was incredible. I would take it again. I loved every second of it.
Class is a lot of work, but I found the material so interesting that it was completely worth it. You learn a lot of stuff that gets passed over in most US History classes, and about bad-rear-end women that you might otherwise never have heard of. She is engaging during lectures, and expects you to be the same (participation grade!)
I liked her a lot! I didn't like the readings much, but class time itself was enjoyable. She made it fun and interesting. My criticism would be that some lectures were a pain. Often it was disorganized and too fast to truly absorb info. But, you received a detailed study guide for the exam, you knew exactly what to expect! Passable/good class!
This course was way too easy. She showed 8 documentaries in class. If you are one of the few students who is going to college to increase your reading, writing and critical thinking skills stear clear.
Great class! You learn a lot! Homework and quizzes affect your grade. A lot of extra credit opportunity. Final exam was tough but an effective study guide was given. Lectures can be very fast-paced and challenging and there is a lot of required reading. Interesting material! She loves history and is an expert in her field. Highly recommended.
She has passion for the subject which makes a class better. I thought the lectures were great. We watched a few movies in class. She is down to earth, easy going. There was a fair amount of work, subjects weren't dull. I emailed her a few times and she never got back to me. I didn't show up for the presentations but wasn't penalized. Great class!!
Awesome instructor. Knows what she's talking about. She's an expert on the Silk Road and has travelled to different regions of China. She can pronounce the name of every Chinese emperor with ease, and gets you to pronounce it right, too. Definitely take her class if you are at all interested in learning about Asian history, you won't regret it.
She is really awesome and a great teacher - hard classes, but great teacher! Definitely take her classes.
I love history & was very interested in learning about Asia & the Middle East; however, her lectures were confusing. She talks at 100mph as if you should already know everything. We read 3 books for her section &during class it was more of a open discussion reviewing the book, not history. Her study guide didn't reflect the material we learned.
If you like taking organized color coded notes don't take her class. she speaks very fast and skips around on subjects. if you ask for help she will take little jabs at you during class and make you feel bad for not doing well in her class. Take this class if you're planning to major in anxiety.
This class was split between two instructors because of the broadness of the subject. Overall Cherie is very passionate but she can be quite confusing sometimes and does not give you the information she expects you to know. Exams are completely written, so you need to know the information or you will not pass. Overall a fun class, you earn your A.
I took her Women in America history course and it was a great class. She is a great teacher and very passionate about the subject which made the lectures compelling and interesting. She is big on participation, but makes the class an easy environment to speak in. I really enjoyed this class and her as a teacher.
Great teacher! she does have a tendency to get a little off topic at times but she truly cares about her subject and students. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Would take again!
This was a wonderful class, but I was unaware of how much homework and reading there would be, so beware!! Cheryl is a great teacher who is very passionate about women's studies and has very interesting stories to tell. Sadly, I felt the class was a little disorganized and all over the place as far as lectures go. Otherwise it would be a 10/10.
Cheryl gives amazing feedback on all assignments. She teaches this class with amazing passion that you can't help but learn from. You won't do well in this class if you only half read the readings; she gives quizzes every week (but are easy if you read). I can't say enough positive things about her teaching style; its done with a combination.
Cherie is an excellent instructor. She assures students understand the material and is clear about her expectations. She makes history a bit less painful via her encouraging teaching style. Highly recommend any and all of her courses. As for the class, expect lots of reading (so don't procrastinate) and if you want to pass just do the work.
Professor Barkey teaches the Asia half of World History. There is no textbook for the class, because all the readings are online. Everyone should take this class, because it's a portion of history that not very many of us have been exposed to in high school, and I think everyone would find it useful and fascinating. Focuses on Islam and Buddhism.
Cheryl loves and really cares what she teaches. She does a lot of lecturing and has a lot of on topic stories. She assignes homework almost every class and has check in quizzes after each one. She gives you all the tools you need to pass, you just need to take good notes, do all the readings, and show up.
Cheryl has been a great professor! She gives a good amount of work but from it you learn so much. You can tell she enjoys what she does, and wants you do to well. I would take another course offered by her and I definitely recommend!
10/10 recommend! Cheryl is very kind and cares about your success. If youre having a hard time, she will help you. Pretty heavy in reading, but if you care about or are good at history/women in history, this class will open your mind and not feel like a burden. By far my favorite class ever taken, tough grader but you get out of it what you put in.
There is alot of work, her online class had something do just about everyday. She makes you read/watch several different time consuming materials. Also, a hard grader when it comes to papers.
Cherie helped me a lot while in the transfer progress outside of class, more than any counselor could. She cares an incredible amount about the futures of her students. If you are in her class, do not waste the opportunity to talk to her out of class.
Barkey was an amazing teacher at Cabrillo! I learned a great deal of interesting information from her class. She truly cares about her students and is super sweet. Just keep up with assignments (which can be a little hefty) and participate.
Interesting readings, short homework assignments, and so many extra credit opportunities. She's an inspirational professor, and super passionate about what she teaches. Enjoyed her portion of the class more than Michaels. Highly recommend taking one of her classes.
Took the online summer class. Clearly she doesn't understand the concept of a 4 week online course. Her work load is excessive and her essay questions are all very repetitive. She grades papers like an English teacher and will mark off points for the smallest things. There's an essay due every other day and the quiz on the off days. Steer clear.
Cheryl was an awesome teacher! She's really helpful and gets back to your emails ASAP if you have any questions. She gave a lot of reading assignments but also a lot of fun videos to watch with the course. It was tough class since it was a 4 week course so a lot of work was given. I definitely recommend her and would take a course with her again.
she is one of the greatest teachers I have ever took with. she checks what we dont understand and gives lots of points where we need to study for the exam. she also gives us many extra credit opportunities! i was definitely influenced how she teaches and got so much interests in womens history. i loved how she cares each of the students very much!
She gives A LOT of homework with a lot of reading, and she doesn't like to write on her board, so when she lectures its hard to keep up because she talks really fast. She also gets off topic a lot and never has enough time to finish the lecture.
she requires a lot of reading! I had to purchase about 3 books for this class & the books are incredibly dense!! Overall, shes a great prof. Shes understanding.
I loved this class, Cheryl is very kind and truly loves what she teaches. I felt her enthusiasm and this made her class very enjoyable, probably the best teacher I´ve taken at Cabrillo so far.
I really enjoyed taking this course. Yes it was difficult with lots of work and reading. But I definitely would recommend taking this course. You learn so much and all of her lectures are so interesting. She really makes class so much fun and I would love to take more history classes with her !!!
Incredible Human! High energy. She really goes the extra mile. She gives guidelines and sets up a road to success. The assignments are well thought out, using writings and videos. The material she choices is engaging. Not a typical dry history course. She does easily get off topic but it keeps things interesting.
Unclear grader on essays. Id rather take Mangin but that's just me. Normal professor.
If you get the chance to take a course with Prof. Barkey - do it! She has passion for what she teaches, is incredibly flexible and kind and really cares about her students. She requires reading and watching but her zooms are sooo helpful and she is quick to respond to emails. She is an absolute gem of a professor!
She is an amazing story teller. She created a very inclusive and comfortable learning environment.
This class was likely the most difficult history class Ive ever taken (and Im a history major). Professor Barkey is pretty strict when it comes to the almost weekly writing assignments and doesnt provide a rubric to explain why you got the grade you got. The quizzes were really hard! If you take her class, just be prepared to grow as a writer.
So knowledgable and only cares that she shares her rich understanding of history with her students. She is completely understanding of every situation and makes the learning accessible to you. The class is a fair amount of work and she chooses really good topics and gives you flexibility to choose and explore your interests. She's great,u learn
Took it as a summer course, so it was fast paced. Weekly quizzes an 1 page essays, on the book that was relatively cheap. Barkey would just provide the sections you needed to read and you would do the rest. Overall easy class as long as you commit to the time to complete the readings and assignments.
I loved this class and Cheryl was amazing, I fell behind due to getting COVID, but she excused some of my work w/ the supporting doc, I don't really do well in this subject and book was a little hard to understand at times, I still passed the class, but she was well organized over all & fun videos to watch also. Fun Class though it isn't my area.
Prof Barkey stands by assigning up to nine hours of work each week so be prepared to spend your time wisely. Do not take this course if you're looking for an easy A. Prof Barkey is super understanding that life happens and will work with you. Overall she was a pleasure to have as a professor and pushes you to exceed your own expectations.
If you already struggle to learn or are neurodivergent, I don't recommend this class. Extreme about the 7.5 hours of work a week. Get ready to spend closer to 10-15 hours a week. For everything you read/watch, there is roughly 30-60 "key terms", a half hour clip turns into a 1.5 hours, which she does not account for in her workload calculations.
The only thing I feel like this professor did, was assign work and grade it. All of the things we studied each week were from outside sources such as documentaries, textbooks, articles. It was a lot of work to get through so take care with your time when planning this course.
This was a hard class for me, there is lots of reading, you have to watch documentaries, there's a lot of key terms you have to follow along with any documentary or reading that you do. Instructor does well at communicating with you, don't be shy to reach out to her if you are uncertain of something. I do recommend taking this class!
Cherie was an amazing professor, and you can really tell she really cares about her students and goes above and beyond. However, there is a lot of homework and attendance is mandatory if you don't do the homework or skip class, you will not pass. The quizzes are also really hard, but with all that said I still loved the class and material learned.
I took her women in history class, and while I learned a lot, the workload was crazy! It was expected that we completed around 10 hours of homework a week, which is difficult to uphold with a full course load and a job. I do appreciate her passion about the subject, you can tell she loves what she does.
I've never had a professor grade so harshly. The workload is the equivalent to a part-time job. The quizzes are ridiculous. I wish I hadn't been required to take this class. Assigning 17 chapters of a textbook in one week, on top of a discussion board, a writing assignment, and a quiz is insane. This class is not accessible to most students.
Cherie is a great person but is inconsistent. She promised no final but surprised us with a hefty one. Grading lacks clarity, & a strict attendance policy affects even valid excuses. The class is entertaining but burdensome, making it tough for those working full time with such a heavy work load. Don't take this class of you don't have 10hrs extra.
Shes quick at responding to emails. Her quizzes are hard. She accepts late work with a penalty (depends how late). There is a final worth 100 points. Quizzes are only one try, if you miss a quiz you can contact her and she will repost it for you, depends on the reasoning. Do the WORK or you will fall behind. Assignments have a LOT of WORK.
Definitely the hardest history class I have ever taken. Unnecessarily large workload for what is usually a pretty simple class. Wouldn't recommend, when other teachers assign less for the same content.
Unrealistically high standards for an introductory community college humanities class.
Unnecessarily heavy workload and incredibly high standards for a history class. I took this class out of interest in knowing more about women in history and though I have learned some things, every week I am drowning in readings, videos, and movies (3+ hours of just studying) that are mandatory to watch in order to answer the homework.
Extremely heavy workload (specifically with Cheryl), went too quickly in lectures and didn't like students speaking up too much. Additionally she showed disrespect and discrimination against trans students who corrected her misuse of language. Reported to the history department and her colleague who responded to the complaint made the student cry.
This class has a heavy workload, but the professor is knowledgeable and understanding. The textbook and lecture materials are helpful, and tools like unstuck AI can aid in study prep. Overall, an engaging history course.
This professor expects around 3-5 hours of reading/documentaries then around 5-10 hours per homework assignment (which usually take days to complete since they're so confusing). This is ridiculous to ask for a general education class. This professor gave someone else my grades because she continuously got us mixed up. Get ready to get called on!
This teacher does not respond to emails in a timely manner, and sometimes not at all. She is slow to grade and post grades, so you feel unsure about where you stand in the class. The homework is an overwhelming amount. The 5 question quizzes feel unfair and hurt your grade. She says one thing and then changes her mind often. Avoid this teacher.
Took this course in august 2025, had to drop the course "W'. Its online. The amount of homework is insane. I truly believe she gives lots of homework because learning about history is easy for HER. As someone who doesn't know anything about history its difficult when learning. You will literally spend your weekends on this course. So much writing.
