Take her for Stat 201! She is one of the sweetest, most genuinely caring teachers I have had at USC. The material covered in class is not difficult by any means. She is extremely helpful if you are struggling with any topics. A large number of quizzes and homeworks are dropped. An A is very attainable!
She is the sweetest lady, she makes the concepts you learn super clear, she provides students with plenty of opportunities to succeed, she allows you to drop a homework grade, a lab grade, and 3 quizzes. I hate math but she made it fun and easy for me. I would definitely recommend taking her.
It's impossible to not get an A in this class if you have this professor. She drops 3 quiz grades, a homework grade, and a lab grade. The class was easy! She's just really boring but I recommend her.
STAT 509 is tough material, but Black teaches it fairly well. Quizzes about every other class period, she drops the lowest two. Tests are very similar to practice problems she gives out. I'd recommend taking her, if you can put up with her loud southern accent.
all the tests are based off of previous tests and she allows you a cheat sheet on every test. quizzes she goes over before she hands out. no homework collected. actually likes her job so its actually easy to listen to her talk because she actually wants students to succeed.
Material is tough, quizzes are tough, tests are tough. She goes over how to do the quizzes beforehand but the problems are so difficult there are still a ton of students who fail because they dont know what to do. Tests are harder than practice tests she gives out. She really makes the class harder than it needs to be, try to take someone else
Professor black was really good. It's clear she cares about students and wants everyone to do well. She will help out with your understanding and grades. Her exams follow her lecture material and optional homework and are doable if you pay attention. I actually enjoyed coming to this class.
Mrs. Black lets you have cheat sheets on the exam which helps a ton. Her class is a complete bore though. Lectures are straight from the book and she doesn't know how to work out any problems. There is one project which is hard to do because it is fairly vague. Best to take if you've had a friend whose taken her before and can study their stuff.
Awesome professor. Very obvious she cares about her students. Will stay late, schedule study sessions, sit down one-on-one--just have to ask. Focuses on practical uses for statistics and less about theory. If you decide to take it for grad credit, tests and papers are more difficult but expected.
Cheryl seems slow at times. You ask her a question but there is usually confusion with her processing of said question. She reads from slides but attendance is mandatory. Her exams are usually half the same as the practice test so don't rely on it. Average was probably a B for the class but it's rough because of her inability to elaborate on topics
Mrs. Black was a great professor! plenty of help wa offered, puts up practice tests, no suprise quizzes or homework, very easy material in beginning and very difficult material at end but definitely doable. GO TO HER PRE-TEST STUDY SESSIONS. SHES TELLS YOU WHAT WILL BE ON THE EXAMS
This woman is not really that great of a teacher. I'm the person who prefers to teach themselves, you have the slides on Blackboard, they do not have actual problems. Want homework? Buy WileyPlus. Want to pass the project? Buy MiniTab. She doesn't talk about the theory for why it is, she doesn't even use R like the other ones. Just don't take her.
Nope. Absolutely not. Instant regret. She is a very caring and kind person but just can't convey statistics to the class. At one point she will be on one side of the board, then the next, until your head is spinning. The worst thing is that she punishes you for wanting to learn on your own and doesn't take into account those who learn differently.
As a person, I like Cheryl, as a professor, I would highly advise that you take LITERALLY ANYONE ELSE. As a computer science/engineering professor, it's not beneficial since we don't learn R, and because she her project has a bias against computers. If you are a CSE major, please take someone else.
Decent professor who makes it easy to get an A if you show up for the quizzes and study a little for the tests. She drops the lowest 5 quizzes and has an easy project that you can bs your way through.
Nice person terrible professor
Mrs. Black is a good teacher, I would take her again. She is real world experienced. Also very kind and caring. A real gem
Mrs. Black is obviously very intelligent and caring towards her students. However, this doesn't translate too well to teaching the actual material needed to pass the class. During one particular class about 8-12 Students left the lecture early so they could study what we were going over in class because it made no sense. You will teach yourself.
It may be seen that sometimes her lectures are boring. But if you listen to her carefully during the class it is easy to get A. She provides helpful study guides to prepare for the exams.
She is super passionate about what she does, but for those like me who didn't like the material, it is super boring. She is also very very nice and laid back. Study the practice tests very well and the tests are very similar. Go to class and you won't have to study as much, you just have to see how to do stuff once and you should be fine.
Cheryl has no problem with her students failing and just suggest they drop the class instead of trying to help the class learn.
If i could give her a 0 I would. She never answers her emails and throws the tests at us after giving us an exam review that has nothing to do with the test questions. Half the class would always fail the exams and she would not curve them. Not good at teaching. All this class did for me was stress me out.
I would highly recommend not taking this class. I took it virtually my freshman year. Ive taken multiple previous math classes and did very well but in this class I failed all the exams. She never posts the lectures on time and doesnt respond to emails. Save yourself the tears, stress, and time and take this class with another instructor
Do. Not. Take. This. Class. Please, take anyone else. Ive taken higher level stat courses and done very well, this class was absolutely ridiculous. She has no idea how to teach a virtual class. She blamed the students when 72 people FAILED her exam. She takes no accountability. Save your gpa, take someone else.
does not care about her students at all. cannot teach an online class. she posts lectures late, doesnt respond to emails, when 72 students failed her exam she said that wasnt her problem and to drop the class. please do not take this class unless you want to waste your tears and stress!
She is not a good teacher, I have not learned a single thing this whole semester and struggled to teach myself everything. She gives one HW assignment weekly, no quizzes and only 3 exams. Hasnt updated anything other than exams in grade book leaving many students wondering if they'll even pass. I recommend avoiding at all cost
Has not actually taught anything in class. Assigns an insane amount of homework and expects students to teach themselves. My most problematic class by far.
Im usually pretty understanding when it comes to not liking professors, but the fact that this women couldnt care less that 72 people failed her exam and she took no accountability. Insane. Take anyone else.
The notes she provides does not match up to her homework/exams/what she talks about in class. The organization is not existent. 2 weeks left in class and we have yet to experience assignments posted on time.
If you can't teach yourself everything about this class, take literally ANYONE else. She does not care about her students and isn't willing to help. If you have her as a teacher, don't bother emailing her because she will probably never respond.
In our 200+ class, 73 students failed midterm and 98 others got a C or D BUT she yelled at us & blamed us despite her not providing the proper material for us to succeed. She does not make our exams but uses her own power-points-- nothing translates to our weekly homework or tests. Mandatory to get $15 i-clicker but we used it once? DONT TAKE HER.
Cheryl Black is not a good professor. The fact that 72+ people failed an exam in a 110 level class is a loud enough statement. She then took no responsibility for it despite the fact that she will not upload her notes (70+ pages a chapter) until the evening before live lecture. The entire semester she has been scatterbrained and full of excuses.
I'm sure she tries to be as good of a professor as she can, I found her class impossible to take. She gives an insane amount of homework, and expects you to learn the material yourself if you want to do well on the homework. But, her tests are open note, so if you can learn the material and take good notes, you'll be fine. Don't take the class.
Please save yourself and do not take this class. I feel bad because she literally does not know how to teach anyone or anything. She made this class 10x harder than it needed to be. Does not respond back quick and when she does, she is rude and condescending. Also, she doesnt post notes or homework until Thursday when its due Friday.
While I definitely respect her experience and know she tries her best, she is not a good teacher. If you actually want to learn the material, you will be watching 1-2 hour long lectures every week. It may have been harder due to online instruction. Find a study group if you want to do well in this class.
This professor was the worst professor I think that I've ever had. The lack of effort and care that she had for her students during the time of the pandemic was pathetic. Ince it was an online stats class it was built to be difficult but she just wouldn't put grades in, we only have 3 exams but each of those are 25% of out grade.
For the love of god, avoid this woman at all costs. I feel that her goal is to confuse her students and doesnt care if we fail. No accountability. PLEASE FIND A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR.
If you are walking into this class with no experience- DONT. You will stress yourself out trying to teach yourself with no office hours (except at the end of the semester...). She expects a prior knowledge of course material despite it being intro. She seems to know a lot about stats but can't convey the knowledge. She's nice but I don't recommend.
She is a very nice lady however this class was quite hard. She is inarguably smart and definitely knows the content BUT she's not the best at teaching it, especially to lower level classes. She expects you to understand the content on your own, even if she hasn't taught it to us. I ended up having to teach pretty much everything to myself.
This was the worst professor I have ever had. She does not respond to emails, her notes are nothing like her exams, and when you come to her with questions she explains it in a way that you cannot even understand. Her exams are hard for no reason with only 10-20 questions, so if you miss one that could ruin your grade. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
This was your standard statistics class, nothing too special. Material was covered in recorded lecture decently, but reading the textbook doesn't hurt. There was textbook and iclicker homework every week. 3 exams and a final project were 20% each. Professor Black is an interesting person with lots of stories, but in-class lectures felt like a waste
DON'T TAKE HER!!!! If you want a good, caring, and reasonable teacher she is not it. She expects you to do everything on your own. She reads off a pre-made powerpoint and doesn't even know how to do the real material. She is clueless when it comes to answerin any questions and not to mention is awful at explaining any assignment. Good luck lol.
Black seems like a great person but she isn't the best at teaching. Her lectures don't match the homework. She teaches the basic levels of the material and then the homework is ten times harder. The homework is long too. I think the most time I spent was three hours on one assignment. She's not terrible, I would just take someone else.
This is by far the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. This class is almost impossible to make an a in. I made 100s on all of the homework and tests, but the exams are worth 25% of your grade (there are 3 of them) and I have not made an A on one. Even friends in higher stats classes couldn't figure out how to help me.
She seems really nice and like she has a lot of experience in the field, but she isnt the best at translating it into teaching. All of her lessons were just her reading off a powerpoint and she didnt allow us to ask questions during the class since it was online. I dont think she understood that just because it was online, she should teach.
Would never take her again. She sent an email saying that she was disappointed in us failing even though over 80% of the class failed. She was very rude about it and couldnt figure out how to teach online or use her mic so we could hear her
I could tell online teaching was not her thing. Maybe she would be better in person, but truthfully this class was harder than my business statist 206. Bragged about how 70 people failed an exam, but isn't that a reflection of the teacher? Nice to me but reviews, lectures, homework and exams did not match up. Stay away.
Do not take anything with this professor especially if its online. She will not prepare you for any of the material in her ridiculously difficult tests. A PowerPoint is released at the beginning of every week to go over the material, and her lectures consist of reading the PowerPoint youve already read. I struggled all semester, do not take it.
She is very test heavy, and most of your grade relies on 3 exams. The optional final was at a really weird limited amount of time, and she makes online very difficult. She does give a lot of material to really understand the questions that will be asked on the test. Dont take her class!
Even though the class was hard, she was at least nice to us; that is, until the end of the semester, when she sent an email expressing how she was disappointed in us for most of the class failing an exam when that seems more of a reflection on her part, as well as accusing us of cheating and saying that we didn't deserve to be alumni of our school.
She did not care about her students at all, and did not try to help anyone. I did not learn a thing in the class, and was never once actually lectured.
She's okay. Her tests are worded strangely and she's kind of passive-aggressive so if you have trouble with that don't take her. Her class is boring honestly.
Worst professor I have ever had. If I could give her a 0 I would. Long, boring lectures. Study guides that are not at all similar to the exam. Things on the exam that we covered for 2 seconds in class. Never responds to emails and when she does theyre passive aggressive. No excused absences, not even for Covid.
Her lectures are so unbelievably boring. She also is hard of hearing, so if you ask a question, it is very hard to communicate. The content is pretty hard, but I did think that the study guides she gave for each exam were pretty useful and I was able to do well for that reason. LOTS of time consuming homework due every Saturday night :(
Reads directly off of slide presentations... probably not made by herself. Reads all the material and problems but does not explain/teach it. Does not teach how to do it on the calculator either... but tests are online and open note... which doesn't help if she doesn't teach you how to do it. Feels pointless to even go to class anymore.
Cheryl claimed that we needed the textbook, however we never used it. iClicker questions and participation every class. Yes, she does have the location services turned on. She is extremely unresponsive to emails and does not communicate her points well and contradicts herself. However, even if youre bad at math this class is fairly easy.
This woman is an awful professor. She is unable to follow a line of thought and her exams are like nothing seen in class. She also refuses to curve her exams even when the whole class scores poorly. She is the worst teacher I have ever had for anything, ever. If you ever have to take a stats class, stay as far away as possible from Cheryl Black.
She's tough to learn from. Bases her lectures off the powerpoint and really doesn't teach that much that makes sense. Weekly homeworks were like shots in the dark to pass. Basically taught myself everything I needed to barely pass tests with low B's.
She wasnt mean and seemed to have a good personality, but when it came to actually lecturing, it sucked. she wasnt engaging with the students and kind of just read off the slides. she says the textbook is required but i never used it. also requires iClicker( which we used). homework isnt bad, its automatically graded and the test are the same.
This professor though eager to please, goes off on long tangents which makes it impossible to get through all the material. She grades off homework which you get two attempts at, 3 tests and one final exam that was optional or could take the place of a low test. Homework and tests contained questions at a higher level of difficulty than in class.
sometimes she doesnt wear shoes
There are a lot of negatives reviews, but if you attend lecture and take notes, you will do great in this class. Worst part is sitting through a long lecture, which can sometimes be boring. Prof. Black provides students with study guides (with her handwritten answers) and goes over the information in class. Choose her for your statistics class!
I was scared to take her, because of the bad reviews. Yet, she has been one of the best math teachers. This class was fairly simple, with us being able to use the study guide on the test and notes. I am not good at math and I have passed this class with a high grade. Don't listen to the students that sit in the back row and nap.
I knew she wasnt going to be a great professor from the beginning because of the reviews but she was the only option so I had to take her. In the beginning it was honestly fine and simple but when it got to the heavy math part it felt like she was confused so I was confused. The tests are difficult and the lecture is boring. I dont recommend.
She is not the best teacher by far. Lots of boring lectures that are very long and sometimes hard to follow. All exams were online this year for covid reasons which made things easier but often times her exam prep did not match the questions asked on the exam. If you are an independent learner I recommend, but if not, don't take her.
Mrs. Black is not a very good teacher. She knows the information but executes it terribly. Homework every week. 3 tests and an optional final. You can take the final to replace your lowest test grade. She does not answer emails and when you ask her a question you become more confused. This class should be easy, so take a different professor.
She's not as terrible as most of the reviews say but she's not great either. She has a very dull voice that makes it hard to listen to in lectures (she has *long* lectures). She isn't the best at explaining things in an easy-to-understand way, either. But she isn't awful!
Knows here stuff. Hard but fair. Learned a lot.
Nice lady, but terrible lectures. Ask a question and she probably won't understand what you are asking. Tests were all remote and open-note, but very short so one question wrong would tank your grade. Very mediocre professor, not the worst but not the best. Take at your own risk.
Lectures were very boring and she tended to take a lot of breaks. Iclicker questions every class so be sure to show up, they only count for participation. Easy homework every week and she drops the 3 lowest. Plus an exam after each unit and an optional final that will replace your lowest exam. She is nice and will answer your emails and questions.
This class is very hard if you havent taken Stats before. The exams/review dont match with notes. EXTREMELY boring lectures. final exam replaces your lowest of 3 exam grades which helps. Homework doesnt match exams/class and is useless and takes FOREVER. The exams were open note online but if you missed 1-3 question youre at a B. DO NOT take her!
Let me just start off by saying the third exam our class had the class average was 64 and she did not even think once about curving it. The whole class almost failed the exam and she did NOT care at all. This should be an easy class. I took stat in high school and got a 99 then took this intro to stat class and got a 86. Getting an A is hopeless.
This class would have been really hard if I hadn't taken AP Stats in high school. Prof takes a long time to explain things and is confusing. The homework doesn't match the lectures. A good thing is that the test reviews were really helpful, and even though the tests were hard, they matched what was taught. Don't take if you're new to statistics.
Very nice lady, but easily the worst classroom experience Ive ever had in my life. Exams have very little to do with the instruction or homework, yet they determine your grade almost completely.
Very nice and very smart but lacks the ability to answer questions and clarify confusions. She doesn't seem to understand students' questions even when they are extremely simple.
She is a nice lady but not a great professor. Your grade will depend on exams which is frustrating. The homework is worth so little but has 20+ questions while exams are worth so so much more but can have 10-15 questions. She doesn't clarify and does not know how to respond to questions. Her exams are way harder than the homework.
Cheryl is a super nice lady but not the best professor but all of the HW and test answers are in the notes or on a quizlet so the class was so easy. There's one hw every week that takes probably 10 mins and 3 exams w an optional final. she's letting us redo our hw to improve grades, there's no reason anyone should fail unless they don't do the work
Just want to say, come to class. Simple as that. She is very annoying though. Teaches slow, does not explain that well. But, is very opened to questions. BE READY TO BE GRADED 25% WORTH FROM ICLICKER QUESTIONS AND ATTENDANCE. Exams not that hard but not like the homeworks. All exams are open note and there is an optional final. CLASS WAS BORING
She is a fairly nice lady, but her class is painfully boring and her class gets very complicated as it goes on. She requires attendance and gives quiz questions during class. I would recommend staying away from taking this class with Cheryl.
Didn't think a basic stat class would be hard but i was wrong. EXCEPTIONALLY BORING lectures. The only thing class consists of is her lecturing for an hour and fifteen and iClickers. Exams are open notes but decently confusing and she doesn't explain material well. Very nice woman but as far as understandable material that is a no.
Exams are usually around 15 questions, if you get a few wrong you are already in the B-C range, exams are worth 80% of your grade and what she goes over in class isn't very helpful. She basically just reads off the slides and expects you to do well on the exams. People were getting 10s-20s on our exams and she still didn't curve.
Exams weigh A LOT. She does not curve. Homework every week that takes about 10 min. and is able to be re taken. Very passionate about what she teaches, just very monotone.
Professor Black isn't that awful of a professor, but she isn't a great professor either. 3 exams optional final with homework grades and clicker questions. Her lectures are boring and the information could be much more easily taught. Will never curve and you cannot backtrack on tests. Take another professor if you can.
All over the place. Difficult to understand.
Nah this aint it
Great lady. Lectures every class but try's to make it interesting. Attendance is mandatory, you have iclicker questions in class that count as your participation grade and attendance. There is a homework assignment every week and 3 exams. Everything is online for homework and exams.
the explanation is bad for the problems you will have to solve for the exams and hw's. The charts and examples she shows are sometimes confusing or aren't explained well. Wouldn't retake this class. make sure to read the textbook more was learned reading it then when present in class.
Nice lady, but this is the worst class I've had at USC. Exams were completely open book and somehow a sizeable portion of the class still failed (including myself on the final)
Don't take the class. Doesn't explain anything and is super confusing. just goes through slides and makes random comments that don't make sense. find another class!
If you actually listen to the lecture, you'll pass the class. One homework a week with 2 attempts, optional final. All homework and tests are taken on Blackboard. One test grade is dropped if you take the final, and several homework grades are dropped.
Don't ever take this class. the tests are hard and don't make sense at all and the book makes more sense than the professor. don't take this course with this professor.
She is a little bit crazy and doesn't know how to answer questions on class, but all of the exams are open notes and online. You have two attempts at the homework you get once a week. If you pay attention and take notes in class you should be able to pass.
Although she is a nice lady her lectures were incredibly boring. It felt as if she would ramble on and on about unnecessary material the entire class. When you got to the test there were so many problems that felt like you'd never seen before. All online exams which helped a lot. One HW assignment a week that you can find all answers on quizlets.
Dr. Black is a very nice professor. At one point she moved an exam for me because I was busy and didn't make a huge fuss over it. There's some hw every week, three exams, and the final is option. She does require iClicker mobile for the class. Class material isn't too hard and I think she did a good job of teaching it.
I loved taking Professor Black. She had very good lectures and did a good job teaching the material. There was a small assignment every week for homework, and there is three exams and an optional final. She does mobile iclicker for attendance, but I missed a lot of classes and I still made a 100 for attendance and participation.
Mrs. Black is a lovely lady and she seems to have been dealing with some difficulties herself this past semester, but showed up to class and genuinely cares about her lectures and students. If you do not like long lectures or can't concentrate well this isn't the class for you. However, having the exams/homework online was pretty helpful.
13 hw assignments with the lowest three dropped worth 10% of final grade, 3 exams and cumulative final all worth 20%, and iClicker participation worth 10%. Boring lectures, she just reads over the slides and doesn't fully explain. On exams, after going to the next question you can't go back to it, very annoying. Final can replace lowest exam grade.
Professor Black is one of the nicest people ever and is very understanding but her lectures can be all over the place at times. Her lectures usually did not help much with the harder homework sets but if you do office hours with her it is MUCH more helpful then the lecture. That is the only reason I was able to do well on my final.
She seems to be very knowledgeable about the subject but isn't the best teacher. She explains the work as if she is speaking to people who already know what she's talking about. Not great if this is your first stats class ever. If you want to do well you will have to do some learning out of class.
She makes the material seem way more complex than it is and is very boring to listen to in general. Take the class online, even if you don't learn online you'll be in the exact same position as someone in her class, learning nothing. the only difference is you don't actually have to sit in a room with 100 people for an hour every other day.
She seems knowledgeable about the subject but just is a poor teacher. She made the class way more difficult than it needed to be.
Seriously do not recommend taking her course. You will be teaching yourself every chapter without guidance and (at least for my class) there are no SI Sessions and she is barely available after hours even if you're willing to go that extra mile.
Do not take Cheryl. Each exam is 20% of your grade and she doesn't offer extra credit. Her office hours are not easily accessible as they are online and you have to sign up for them ahead of time. Her lectures are not easy to follow if you don't know stats lingo. Even if you get a 100 on most of the home work it doesn't help your grade.
Do not take this class. She is very incompetent and cannot teach the material. Her lectures are way too long and she will not let you out of class until the last minute. Do not buy the textbook we did not really use it so don't waste money. Her tests are incredibly challenging and do not match what she teaches in class.
EASY class IF you took Ap stats in hs, not if you are new to stats. Study for tests by looking up Stat Ch # study guide/ Formula Sheet and you'll be fine. She's super nice and genuinely cares about her students. The only thing I would say is that your grades are pretty much what you receive on exams so make sure you take them seriously.
Strongly advise against taking Black. Very nice lady, but to pass, you will have to teach yourself all the material. Exams are online, but extremely difficult, and you can't find the answers by searching them up. Exams have no option to show work, and most questions aren't multiple choice, so one typo or slight miscalculation and it's over for you
Exams are hard and nothing like lectures/ homework.
Professor Black is very nice but when it comes to teaching material about stats she's not the best. The whole class she just lectures off a presentation and barely offers any in-class practice problems. I even went to an SI and a tutor, and both were having some difficulty trying to understand what was being taught. Overall, a frustrating class.
Professor Black is nice but does not do the best job relaying material to the class. She uses practice problems unrelated to any of the homework or tests to help the class pRaCtIcE. When the class as a majority fails something, she extends the due date and gives another try instead of teaching the material that all the students did not understand.
She is a really nice woman but she is bad at teaching. She uses complicated formulas for easy concepts. I took this in high school and she confused me more than helped me. Notes, homework, and tests all don't really correlate which is frustrating. She writes all the questions herself so you cant look them up. Grade is all about the tests.
you have to pay so much to take this course and attendance is very mandatory for a 100+ person math class. she is a very nice person! i did find it a lot easier to teach myself the more difficult topics because she is not the best at explaining
Professor Black is a very nice lady, but does not do a great job explaining the material. Easier if you took AP Stat in high school. Do not buy the textbook you will not use it. She uses iclicker for attendance and all tests are online. Homework was easy but the test is a lot harder then the homework
She is really a sweet person and cares genuinely about all her students. But... this class is horrible. The more I go to class, the more confused I am even though I have prior stat knowledge. Exams will make you cry and there's no partial credit. You teach everything to yourself and the lectures are unhelpful. If you are new to stats, DO NOT TAKE!!
She seems to be very knowledgable on the material, but her lecture notes made the content so much more confusing, and I didn't really understand when she was lecturing.
Only reads what's on the PowerPoint and gives formulas. Never shows how to use a calculator or excel. So many questions on the test you'll run out of time.
When paying attention to her lectures, you will be more confused than if you look at the PowerPoint presentations she has posted. She gives you textbook formulas and not actual formulas that are understandable. I took AP Statistics and am still confused. You can miss four classes over the semester she will drop it along with your lowest exam grade.
As someone who loves stats and passed the AP Stat exam in high school, the exams in this class were unbelievably difficult and had me panicking up until the last second before I ran out of time. Kind professor but does not teach well at all. My friends in other Stat classes had a completely different experience. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Open note tests and online!! Lecture heavy and hard to understand what she's teaching. Homework not like tests
Very sweet lady but this class was awful. I really don't recommend taking unless you have taken stats in high school, I didn't and was completely lost even though I studied and paid attention in class. Tests are online open everything but are very difficult, homework doesn't align with exams. Chegg is essential for teaching yourself course content.
Super nice lady but really hard class. Tests and homework are online and open note/book but were nothing like the lectures. You'll struggle if you've never taken a stats class even if you study and pay attention in lectures.
The exams had nothing to do with any notes or any material from class. if you take Cheryl black it's practically a necessity to buy Chegg. You'll struggle heavily without it. I'm an A student but her class was nearly impossible to get an exceptional grade in. I still have nightmares about Cheryl Black's Stat 110 class over a year later.
She isn't as bad as people say. I didn't take AP Stats and still found the course pretty easy just by paying attention in class and taking good notes. She's very nice, and tests are online and open notes. Just make sure you take good notes in class to use for the test.
Attendance was done through iclicker so you don't have to go to class. all exams online not with respondes. not horrible class
Her notes are hard to learn from and her lectures are impossible to pay attention to. Your grade is mainly determined by your exams and homework. Would not recommend, so hard to learn the material.
Cheryl Black is a very sweet lady and she cares about all of her students. Going to class is crucial, and expect a homework assignment every week (the lowest 4 get dropped). The negative reviews stem from people who simply did not put in enough effort. Just take good notes and review for a couple hours before each exam and you'll do fine.
She is a really nice person, but I could not learn from her lectures at all. They were all over the place and very hard to understand. This class will be hard to pass if you do not have some prior knowledge of statistics.
She really is a great professor, but this class can be pretty confusing. I don't agree with some of the ratings on here but if you pay attention to what she is explaining and interact with her, you will be just fine.
While she is a sweet lady, she cannot teach statistics. She has canceled class multiple times, does not teach the material in an understanding way, and relies on her SI sessions, which also get canceled often. If you struggle in math, cannot self-teach well, or have never taken statistics, then DO NOT take her.
Probably the worst stats professor you could take. Lectures are extremely boring and really hard to follow. She was often asked questions in class and couldn't provide a sensible answer. In other words, just a clueless professor who will not teach you a thing about statistics. Don't take her, thank me later.
Attendance is mandatory. The exams are not hard but there is a fair amount of homework. She doesn't really reach out to students but overall the class is fine.
Professor Black changed my life. She has been a ray of sunshine all semester, even though she faced problems concerning the health of her family. Easy A if you use your resources;) Everyone who left a bad review hates hating and doesn't know how to pay attention in class and ace tests:))))))))))))))))))
Her lectures were all over the place and hard to follow/learn from. I only did well because of taking ap stats. She will be a hard professor if you don't have any previous stats knowledge.
Cheryl may be a nice person, but she absolutely sucks at teaching. She only reads off a powerpoint and expects you to now the information effortlessly. The lectures get more difficult towards the end of the course except for the very last chapter. Uses iClicker for attendance. All assignments were online, even tests.
Cheryl is super sweet and caring, but her class is very difficult. Her lectures are very confusing and hard to follow, and with the class being lecture-heavy, it is hard to truly understand and learn stats. The only reason I got a decent grade is because I took AP stats in high school. I would unfortunately not recommend.
RUNNNNN!!! No joke I read all these comments and thought it wouldn't be too bad BUT IT WAS. You can't teach yourself the material unless you have taken stats in the past and even then SHE MOVES SO FAST. You will have no idea what she is talking about half the time and her lectures are not easy to follow. Literally ruined my GPA.
Pretty bad overall. Several times she missed class because she has several pain problems. Shes really in no shape to be teaching, and almost nobody knew what was going on half the time. It was annoying I even needed to take this class in the first place as I took AP Stats with a 4 on the exam, but the university's policy screwed me. Don't take her.
Puts you to sleep. Requires attendance and uses iClicker. All questions she asks are rhetorical. Homeworks have to be done online (defeats the point of a math class.) Homework is due SATURDAY night for some reason. Pulls the questions straight out of the book, a few times I had to explain to her why the "correct" answers were actually incorrect.
She is a very sweet lady and is very good with grading. To be honest you don't have to pay attention to her lectures to do well in the class. Overall very nice professor and an easy A.
All tests were open note and online, really nice lady. class was boring but overall easy to show up to and get a good grade
Nice person, terrible teacher, boring class, mandatory iClicker. Reads slides then asks rhetorical questions. Messes up her words, forgets her thoughts, gets distracted easily. She makes it a pain to learn, making you try harder that you should for a basic stats class. You can get a good grade cause tests are online, but still take someone else.
Take her!! She does sometimes lose her train of thought but shes human. Can't really complain about her teaching at all and she lets you use whatever notes you take on every exam. She does use iclicker but as long as you have less than 5 absences she gives you a 100 for attendance. Sometimes she does ask questions then just sits there waiting.
Easy A. She only requires you to attend 20 out of 25 classes for full participation credit. There is only one homework assignment every week and out of all 14 of them 4 of the lowest grades are dropped. Exams are each weighted 20% (theres 4 of them) and they're fairly easy and you can take them on your own online anywhere.
Honestly don't understand her low rating. All exams were online which makes the class easy. However, her class is extremely boring and it can be hard to pay attention most days. She uses iClicker for participation and attendance. Very sweet lady and I would for sure take her again.
