I dropped this class. Sister Davis is nice and funny but she doesn't explain things very well. She tends to get mixed up with the numbers which makes physics even harder than it already is. Try to make friends with the 105 TAs, but I could neverfindem.
I quickly learned what a waste of times lectures were--I never attended a single one after the first week of the semester. Everything I learned I learned from the book or TA's, because her lectures only made me stupider.
Not hard to get a good grade if you go to lectures, but I'm afraid when I go on to 106 I'll be behind as I didn't learned much in this class. She spends a lot of time trying to get students to explain the class, but often they don't know what they're talking about and only confused me more.
Personal and always has a smile. This is the only class she teaches so passion is her motivation. You have to keep up with the principles but overall a good teacher. She really cares a lot for the students and gives lot of extra credit daily.
She was always cheerful and did really cool demonstrations in class, but when it came to actually applying the concepts to the problems, she didn't do very well. She also seems to be unsure of what she is teaching--in other words, she does not clearly answer a lot of your questions.
I've learned a lot in the class and it has an interesting format. Lots of participation points that keep you involved. Most of the material is learned in the TA lab and from the book, but it's worth it to go and see the demonstrations, because they make you think, and you get about 10 extracredit points every day.
She spends way too much time asking US questions, so a lot of the time we are just learning from a roomful of morons. She doesn't answer questions very well, but she is always available to help and makes time outside of class for appointments. After a few questions, you find out who best knows the stuff and which students to listen to.
Bleh. I used to love Physics before I took this class. She really does try I guess, but it's just not the best. Her tests aren't too hard, the lectures just are dumb.
This the only class I ever had where I was more confused after going to class than I was before class. She is not a good teacher. Her experiments never work and she wastes her time and ours trying to get them to work.
She's pretty confusing in lectures, but her test aren't bad at all. Go to the TA lab for homework. You get tons of extra credit every day you come to class, which is really nice.
She wasn't super good at explaining things in class, but she was always very enthusiastic. The extra credit on the quizzes in class definitely boosted the grades. There's probably a better professor to take 123 from.
You'll go away from lecture more confused then anything. She's nice, but when she screws up on a test or doesn't know the answer she'll just laugh.unwilling to admit when she doesn't know the answer, 90% of the time. she will help you if you set up time to see her. nice lady, probably best option for this class, as all physics proffs. are bad
Bad experience. Over half the class will agree.
If you prefer a confusing independent study course this class is for you! Dr. Davis is a great person, but I left class more confused each time...but getting an A is definitely possible, so if you want to pat that science gpa.....
I would have to say that the worst department at BYU is Physics. This is my second bad experience with bad physics teachers. She doesn't explain anything in class, just rambles on about the EC Quizzes. Also, the tests are just ridiculous. I study a long time and when I go to take the test, the things I studied for are not on the exam.
Electricity and magnetism is an incredibly complicated branch of Physics as it is . . . having Davis teach it makes it all the more difficult to understand. She wastes a lot of time in class talking about simple problems and trying experiments that rarely work. She rarely discusses the more complex problems seen on the homework and on tests.
Dr. Davis is as good as any other physics professor at BYU. Her lectures are pretty confusing and disorganized, but she is very approachable and more than willing to help you even outside of scheduled office hours. She cares about her students and tries to learn names even in a large class.
Dr. Davis has a way of simplifying very difficult topics. There were 5 midterms and a final. You get a packet for the tests with all the equations you need. Exams are not timed. There are a lot of homework assignments but they are all very short. She does lots of i-clicker quizzes every day so attendance is basically required.
Physics 220 is a really hard class dealing with a tough subject. I think that she does as good as anybody could at simplifying and explaining the difficult concepts. Its a hard class but I would recommend her.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had at BYU. She went out of town 2 weeks before the fist test and left us with a sub. We took the test going into it blind. She is really hard on grading written portion on test. And finds enjoyment in tricking students on daily quizzes. If at all cost take physics 106 from another teacher.
Teacher has fairly easy tests as they are mostly conceptual. Her classes can be a pain though because sometimes she takes way too much time to go over a small question, in the process confusing us. Does not teach you the math you need to know for homework. Choose Magleby if you can.
She really is a nice lady, but sadly, she is one of the worst teachers I've had at BYU. I would not recommend you taking her. The main problem is that she confuses the class a lot of the time and then refuses to explain it better so we can understand. Again, she is a really nice lady, but just not a good professor.
Sister Davis is a very nice lady and she is always willing to work with you and help out in any way possible. When I've gone in to talk to her, she has been able to clear up some conceptual things well. In class, she's kind of confusing. The homework doesn't help with understanding the material for the test. Overall, it was an OK class.
She was so helpful in understanding this difficult subject. Her enthusiasm for class and willingness to help outside really made this hard class possible.
By far the best professor I've had. She makes the material simple to understand and there are no surprises on her tests. They are very straight-forward and pertain to exactly what she went over in class. HW is the hardest part, but TA's are great help. She was very interested in my success even though I never talked to her personally.
I would avoid taking a class from her. I was in Physics 121 which is calc based physics but we hardly even ever used calc at all. In fact she avoided it at all costs. She performs frequent errors in class while teaching and working the problems, and to make matters worse her lectures seem highly disorganized. :/
She is a very nice person, but she would have difficult on a regular basis explaining the material. Tests were fair. But she doesn't explain things well. TAs are a big help in her class.
Professor Davis is willing help you just about anytime. although the clarity is sometimes lacking, physics is hard. you can go into her office for further clarity. also very lenient on giving points back on test if you have a legitimate point.
I think she might get physics but she is totally useless at explaining. None of her practice tests prepare well enough for her exams. When asked questions in class over the material she would struggle to find an answer and would eventually give up telling us to turn to the reviews or homework. Too bad she's the only teacher unless you go honors.
While she knew what she was talking about, she did not know how to say it. She gives lots of sample questions about the fundamentals of physics but she tests you on more in depth topics.
Professor Davis is horrible at explaining anything in physics. Once, her explanation on a Q a student asked was so bad the class started laughing. Her tests are way more math-oriented than her in-class examples and the homework often has nothing to do with what we talked about in class. Avoid if possible. I liked physics before her.
Tries very hard to answer student questions thoroughly and to their understanding during lecture. Homework takes about an hour per assignment 3 nights a week. Tests are notably difficult than any homework problem given. Very enthusiastic about subject.
If you have a good grasp of physics and learn it easily, then i would recommend her, the class is easy and you get what you need to know (My grade didn't drop below a 97% all semester) However, if physics doesn't come easy avoid her, she's disorganized and has a hard time explaining concepts to people who are completely lost.
I think she is the worst professor I have had in the three years I have been at BYU. She is horrible at explaining things and class, homework, and the tests don't line up to well with material taught. The homework saved me, but didn't prepare me for tests. Use the book if you have questions, because you aren't going to get help from her.
Prof Davis had me confused from day one. She spends too much time on little things and ends up not covering the stuff on her tests. Labs and homework were not bad. You have to have a pretty good understanding of Physics to do well. I would avoid her if I could.
I know there are a lot of people who don't like her. But I don't agree with them. Her teaching style is a little different than most people are used to but she knows what she's doing and she is very competent in the subject. Just be open minded. You will probably spend a considerable amount of time in the physics lab though...
Probably the most annoying teacher voice you can find. That said, she was great! I had so many dumb issues with tests, but she was always overly willing to help us out and would do anything she could to help. For test prep, she's come chill in the physics lab and help us work through some of the harder homework and test prep questions. Great woman.
super annoying professor. seems almost distracted in all of her lectures. doesnt remember to do enough of those little things to make you lose confidence in her. if there is space in the section, i would much rather take allred or sommeone else.
Sis. Davis is NOT a bad professor. She knows what she is talking about, she explains several test questions in class, and she is frequently available for office hours. You have to do a lot of work to do well in the class, but Sis. Davis even gives a few opportunities for extra credit (take them).
Professor Davis is very nice, and she knows her stuff. But she is not that great at explaining Physics. Expect to teach yourself from the textbook, take every extra credit opportunity, and study your life out for those tests. The tests pretty much determine your final grade.
First, Dr. Davis is my hero. I want to be like her later in life. She's a great, intelligent woman whose priorities are 1) her children and 2) her students. Then, she knows her stuff and you can do well, if you take advantage of the boatloads of opportunities that she offers. Reviews after class, office hours, and more. Just take advantage of it.
Difficult class. Lots of conceptual learning, rather than applications of equations. Prof Davis is there to help! Use her! Pay attention to in-class quizzes, the questions reappear. You can do it.
Professor Davis is super helpful and knows the material really well! Take it from her! She knows how to help her students learn, as well as retain what they learn. The concepts are difficult, but it's very doable if you read the textbook and attend lectures. Make sure to ask questions!
She is AMAZING. I have never taken Physics in my life and she was able to take the difficult concepts and explain them in a way that was understandable. She is so willing to help and she has a genuine interest in your success. She is one of the greatest teachers I have ever had.
Sister Davis is a great professor who has a passion for physics and is a clone of Carol Burnett (hilarious). Her tests are SO difficult, on a completely different level of comprehension than the homework. She is an easy grader though and is very merciful. The class offers lots of extra credit.
Really great professor! Do not take physics from anyone else. She is super helpful and offers a ton of extra credit. Her tests are killer but she curves them a lot so an A is possible.
Awesome class. It's not super easy, but Sister Davis is really good at explaining concepts and maintaining enthusiasm. The class is based on student participation and figuring out things for yourself. Class attendance isn't a huge part of the grade, but I think it would be really hard to learn the concepts without coming to class.
She really cares about the subject and tries to help you understand the concept, but it seems that she is so obsessed with helping you get over misconceptions that she makes it too complicated and doesn't really teach you the math. It's a shame, but she actually managed to take a subject that I liked and make me dislike it.
Don't bother studying math problems because the entire tests are conceptual and she won't tell you that. That really screwed me over for my grade because I had this weird thought that physics involved math but you wouldn't know it by taking the tests. They are completely unfair - 40% of the tests are things you never learned in reading or lecture.
Very unclear in lectures. Asks for several different viewpoints and doesn't clarify which is actually correct. The tests are frustrating and the homework problems and assigned reading don't prepare you for the test.
Professor Davis is a very unclear and confusing. She tries to encourage group learning, but really she just has you discuss concepts that you've never learned with each other so you teach each other false physics. Then she tells what the answer is really quick and moves on without explaining. Expect to do all your learning in the TA lab.
Best decision ever was taking this class from Sister Davis. Its true that the lectures are kind of drawn out (it takes the whole class period to only do a few problems), but its actually pretty interesting. Tons of extra credit saves everyone. I got 100 on the first 3 tests. They are hard, but the homework helps so much. Self teaching is vital.
For the first half of the semester I did not like Sister Davis' Physics 105 class. Her teaching style is different -very group oriented. Her tests are almost purely conceptually based, so if you don't understand the concepts, you will struggle (like I did). Towards the end she helped me a lot and was very patient in explaining things to help me.
There is plenty of doable homework, practice problems, and opportunities to get help. The biggest complaint I had was that she would open questions up for class discussion. This often resulted in several proposed solutions, with many students more confused than when the question was first posed.
Tests are 90% conceptional & very little math. Understand conceptually Easy A. Lectures are a little non-traditional but provides research that proves is better. Homework challenges. Physics comes pretty easy to me, but I thought she was a really good teacher. I didn't find her confusing. Physics itself is a little hard for some and blame teacher
The class is hard for freshman but easier for upper class-men simply because its very straightforward with what is expected, though the material may be slightly hard. fair and to the point.
A lot of people have a really hard time with PHSCS105 and then blame their difficulty on Sister Davis. She explains things well in class, lots of demos, and the material is really straightforward if you just pay attention. I opened the textbook a couple of times for help with the homework, but I never did reading before the class and had no issues.
It was a very difficult class, but I've never learned a science so thoroughly in my life. I felt like we covered every topic in extreme conceptual depth. Afterward, I could really apply everything to my own personal life. I would highly recommend to do the pre-class assignments and the readings, and to do the homework before lecture, not after.
Great teacher, just very tough material. She makes you do the learning rather than you just getting the information, which can suck at times. She's very good at explaining things.
Professor Davis is a great teacher and she really knows how to help students understand physics. She gets a bad rap because she is often overshadowed by one of the other physics professors who teaches the same class, but I had a great experience in her class. It was very hard, but she is very fair and helpful and wants you to succeed.
For a science class, this has been the easiest class I have taken at BYU. I didn't study for a single test, just payed attention in class, did the HW, and went to the extra credit reviews. Between the three I knew the material solid enough to get an A. Sister Davis tries really hared to make sure everyone understands the material, is very patient.
Lecture does not prepare you for the homework and the homework does not prepare you for the test. In class the extremely basic concepts are covered, then the homework is extremely complicated. The tests are worded trickily and they are extremely short, meaning one question could mean the difference between an A and a B, etc.
physics is a tough class. she is really nice and good at explaining things though. I felt like her homeworks didn't help much preparing for the tests, but she provides ample opportunities to buffer grade. good choice for this class
Sister Davis is really fun! She is always willing to work one on one with her students which I really appreciate. The lectures are entertaining, but I felt like most of the stuff to prepare for tests was online. There are LOTS of tests in this class and some of them are group tests. She offers lots of extra credit to help you out. Fantastic teacher
This class sucked. It's already hard material, and she doesn't fully explain things, and almost never fully finishes problems that you do in class. You'll also spend like 40 minutes on a single problem. She'll ask the class what they think the answer is, and someone will say what they got, and she'll go on acting like that's the right answer.
Between her and her husband, the consensus is that you should take it from her. She lectures assuming you've done the 1ish hour of pre-class homework. If you don't do it, you'll be lost. If you do, the lecture alternates between useful to solidify conceptual understanding and boring because you already understand (but want the iclicker points).
Between preclass assignments (extra credit) and lectures, you get what you need. Lectures however are very involving, working through problems and demonstrations. You pick a group and they become life. Very difficult, but I rec. going to TA sessions and paying attention in class. Solve systematically using variables only first- it really does help!
Sister Davis really likes to teach and has some different methods to teach. Lots of really good in-class demonstrations that keep it fun, but also be prepared for her to give you math problems you haven't been taught yet. I have never seen college professor give as much extra credit. Study and do the extra credit.
Her lectures just barely go over the bare basics, nothing else. Lectures are not helpful for homework, you should get the textbook bcause there is almost no benefit to lecture. Tests and homework are confusing because she asks for a paper copy of a proble. I've never gotten full points because she wants us to do things that wasn't even said.
Cheryl is a tough grader with lots of (low value) extra credit. We work in teams of three, but it seems are though this is only good for those that understand the material because I can easily fool myself thinking that I know the material. I suggest studying a little bit beforehand and then reviewing after lecture.
Sister Davis tries her best to teach well but hardly covers everything that is necessary to pass the class, including simple formulas and methods of solving certain problems..
Cares so much about her students. Learned most from the TA lab doing homework though. She likes to try to make you teach yourselfs and each other rather than just teach you first. It's hard. Didn't read the book though so that might have helped.
Professor Davis is an excellent professor who truly cares about her students. Her teaching style encourages student participation which helps you to truly learn the material. She is very willing to provide help outside of class and offers lots of extra credit opportunities.
I thought Prof Davis rocked. She teaches very confidently, and I thought that she could answer questions really well. So if you ask her something, she will help you. I thought she really cared about us and wanted us to do well. There was a lot of homework, but it was necessary. There are some really hard concepts. I really enjoyed her class.
One of my worst professors ever tbh. The class started out easy, but then we got into rotation and oscillation, and it became SUPER hard. The lectures are kind of helpful, but I don't feel like she's very good at answering questions. Luckily she offers a ton of extra credit, and I was still able to pull an A.
You take a ton of tests with like 15 questions but I found it helped to split up concepts. She is really nice and caring but I didn't feel class time nor the homework prepared you for tests very well, it was kind of hit and miss. She does offer EC though and has an easier grading scale. Overall a good choice for this class
Sister Davis is a nice lady, but she makes physics concepts way harder than they need to be. We would go over concepts in class, and then the homework or tests were completely confusing. I wouldn't take another class of her's
Tough class but sister Davis is a fun professor. The homework is terrible difficult but teaches and helps you learn the concepts. Often you will go to the TA lab to get help. The test are half concept and half work problems with a written section. Davis is a good professor teaching a tough class. Would take her again.
This class really depends on your group who you take group tests with and do homework and labs with. The tutorial lab is very helpful. Tests are difficult and impossible to study for.
This is most people's first college level physics class. Of course it's going to be difficult, of course you have to do things outside of class. BYU has an extensive TA lab just for students to learn physics. MOST LEARNING IS DONE OUTSIDE CLASS, NO MATTER THE CLASS, NO MATTER THE SUBJECT. Sister Davis has an open door policy to help students.
If you need to take physics 105 TAKE IT FROM HER!!!! She is THE BEST introductory physics teacher available. Really approachable. Her door is ALWAYS open and she is always helping students. Also the TAs are super helpful with the homework. Most of the lectures involve group problem solving the second hour
Sister Davis is a great lady! However, homework/tests, contain a lot of things she doesnt explain in class. She doesn't follow the textbook very well. Get a good group to sit by so that you can do well on the group tests. Do ALL extra credit modules and you'll do well in the class.
I really enjoyed this class. She expects you to do your part, but if you need extra help shes always willing to explain things. The subject is difficult if you havent had physics before, but Sister Davis is a great teacher.
This is physics and it's tough. You're not going to be able to memorize facts and pass tests. You need to learn to problem solve and Professor Davis has the best method for teaching it. She wont give you the answers in class because that gives you a false sense of understanding and will murder you in tests. She cares about her students.
I had a hard time with Sister Davis' teaching style. I never felt like I was on the same page as her. She teaches us conceptually, but then expects us to know how to do the problems mathematically. I really like how she does a ton of group work. That's the one thing that I really liked about her class.
She does a really good job of explaining hard concepts to such a large class. She does a great job of engaging the class and giving visual examples of what we are learning. Other comments have said the material on homework isn't covered in class always, however that is why we have TA labs to really explain those things in detail. Highly recommend.
Sister Davis really cares about her students and is always willing to help and talk to you outside class. She makes lectures interesting and fun and her tests are reasonable. The only complaint I had about this class was that there is a ton of group work and if you don't have a good group you don't learn and therefore don't do well.
I have never had a worse teacher. I would email her for help outside of class, and skip classes because she said that was the only time that would work for her, and she would never show up. I almost failed the class, and other classes because she wasn't there when I needed her.
Amazing teacher who teaches a class which is sometimes impossible to teach. It is not an easy class but it is a different kind of learning where Sister Davis really focuses on long term retention and student taught learning. Amazing person and I would recommend her highly to you
Dr. Davis' lectures are based entirely around participation. Be ready to do physics problems in class. She will give challenging problems and then helped you work it out after trying it on your own or in groups. This method really helped me become confident in solving tough problems.
I LOVED Sister Davis' class! Lectures are full of humor and awesome demonstrations It is a challenging class, but if you're willing to put in the work and trust the process, you will learn so much. I feel like taking this class has prepared me for harder classes in the future. The TA's will become your best friends since it's such a large class.
Physics is just hard. Her teaching method is to use whiteboards and NOT to use notebooks, so you really don't have any notes to study. Everything you learn is through a demonstration or a problem on her slides, so you don't really get a solid foundation of physics concepts. Rely heavily on the TAs because they will basically teach you everything.
Great professor, but I hated that the final was 30% of the grade and it was cumulative. I was doing pretty well and then the final killed me. I do like the format of the class though, because I actually learned a ton.
Great class! People learn best when thinking critically and teaching others; thats exactly how the class is organized. Theres no lecture but interesting demos and group work. Concepts are learned in class, and math through written homework. With 2 classes/3 recitations weekly, there are many chances to ask Q and get help. Get to know your TA.
Great education philosophy--focused more on the conceptual than memorizing formulas. The lecture format is interactive and smaller groups work together to discuss concepts.
This class was unfortunately really bad. Physics is a hard subject, and Sister Davis tries to make it clear, but I'm not a fan of her teaching style at all. Learning is done all on your own, and lecture is just going over the same stuff. So if you fall behind or don't understand you just kind of get left in the dust. Lecture not required but lab is
Sister Davis has an unorthodox structure for her class. I usually found the lecture hours to be unhelpful as they didn't pertain to the course material very well. You'll do most of your learning outside of class and in the TA labs. The TA's were awesome and super helpful, at least in my case. This class is hard to get an A, but difficult to fail.
At first I didnt like her. At time it feels like you have to learn it all yourself and your only teachers are the TAs. However her method of leading into concepts was very useful. She doesnt just let you memorize equations, Rather wants you to discover them. She isnt better 1 on 1 than in lecture.
She is a nice person, but she's an awful teacher. Content of the class was not that bad, but you have to learn everything on your own. Lecture is only practice problems and demonstrations. TA sections are optional and helpful if you have good TA. She never showed up multiple times when I had an appt to meet with her, when she did there were others
Everything I learned in this class, I learned from the internet, not Prof Davis. She has done all of this research about "effective learning" and assumes her abstract teaching methods work well for everyone. Her TA's are the worst and most arrogant TA's I've met. If I had not taken AP physics before, I would have majorly struggled.
I honestly didn't get that much out of lectures and found myself getting distracted mostly but sometimes they were fun. She tries to have a fun class. Your TA section of the class will have a large impact on how you do since you spend 2 of the 4 class days with them.
Only good thing about this class is that we don't need to memorize formulas and they are provided on all exams. Other than that, her style is horrible. She gives us complex homework of stuff we've never gone over and then explains the formulas in lecture but doesn't go over the complexities of problems. So many hours are spent trying to understand.
Sister Davis tries really hard to be the best professor she can be. Admittedly, her lectures aren't always as useful as one would hope. She teaches concepts, not problem-solving skills. Sometimes you walk out of class feeling like you didn't learn anything. If you utilize the TAs Sister Davis hires, you'll do just fine. 95+% is an A.
She doesnt teach. She doesnt do anything. She simply does demos. And she replies to the comment section of your box at creepy times like 1 am. Sends emails late. Like 2 am late. And expects you to figure it out on your own. When it comes to abstract concepts you need some guidance. Its not the math, its the set up-worst professor ever.
Sister Davis is a better teacher than her husband, but I still wouldn't take her again if I had the choice. Occasionally she'll do a demo but not explain it, or do it once and then put it on the test. Lectures just aren't very helpful. Explanations are vague; she just expects you to learn it all on your own without their help.
Her style of teaching is very difficult to adapt to. We are to "think about it" hard enough to where we understand the concept. VERY VERY seldomly, will she explain something plainly. I truly learned more from Khan Academy in 5-8 minutes about a concept than from her in 75 minutes. 95% is an A. Lots of extra credit. Lecture time is severely wasted.
Cheryl Davis uses a teaching style that just doesn't work. You're supposed to figure a lot of things out on our own through logic, but instead, you'll be left confused and untaught. She'll test you on things she hasn't taught you yet because she wants you to think outside of the box. The TAs taught me more than the professor ever did.
The TA's in recitation teach much better than her. She doesn't really care about the success of the students. She changed group exam dates the night before. Not willing to let you fix mistakes. Overall an interesting subject ruined by a sucky teacher. Take anyone but her for 105.
Sister Davis does an awesome job at explaining the concepts of the physics. For certain units she did not explain the equations as well, but the class TA lab days definitely help with clarifying questions. If you have previous experience with physics, it is a breeze.
Sister Davis has great intentions, but I felt that the only reason her students get on-average higher grades is because they spend a basically mandatory 5.5 hours in class per week. I have never had issues with physics before, and the material was easy, but it was so disorganized that I couldn't get an easy grasp on it. Very frustrating class.
I felt I was being taught by an elementary school teacher the whole time (seating chart, required group work using mini white boards...). She has good intentions and really wants you to learn, but her methods make the material difficult to grasp. TAs and Khan Academy are KEY to get a good grade!
Dr. Davis has this idea that you should struggle to find the answer and that's how you learn... trouble is she doesn't really teach you how to find the answer in the first place. You do the reading (textbook is written in Greek), then you go to the lecture where she explains the basic concepts, then the homework is super technical... :(
Professor Davis has a pretty good balance of homework and quizzes, but seems to expect that you already know everything she's talking about. If you already know the material, you'll do great. If you have to rely on her lectures and explanations, then you're better off reading the textbook.
Sister Davis's research is on Physics teaching, and so she is very focused on actually delivering the content so that the students can understand the material. She did a good job of getting people involved in class and using demos. The only reason that I didn't say 5 was because when things went online for COVID, it was ight. Solid in person though
Do not miss the TA sections. That is where you will actually learn something. Lectures are fine, but often boring and confusing. She knows what she is talking about, but really you learn the most from the homework, your groups and TA's. Oh, and there is a lot of group work in this class. Be ready for tough tests.
Dr. Davis' teaching style did not match my learning style at all. I've taken AP Physics in high school, but still had to heavily rely on the TA's and learn the material on my own because I didn't get anything out of lecture. The worst part was her grading scale... a 95% was the cutoff for an A!
Sister Davis is amazing! She teaches so clearly and really has the students think about what they're learning rather than just drilling and repeating herself. If you've taken physics before in high school, this will be the easiest class you ever take. If not, she's always very willing to help and always chooses excellent TAs. Absolutely recommend!
Lectures are a total waste of time. Homework is a decent difficulty but also self-graded. The tests were so hard and somethings that were heavily tested on were barely talked about in class. Physics is a difficult course and prof. Davis made it way harder than it needed to be.
Sister Davis knows her subject and how to teach it. This class took up a lot of time for a 3 credit class, but Sister Davis's teaching methods are very effective and the homework is very manageable. It is a very hands-on class and it is very obvious that Sister Davis cares about her students.
This class was awful and I am glad it is over. Davis confusing and off-topic half the time and even the online class lectures felt like a waste of time. I was .2% away from an A in this class and I don't think she rounded anyone up bc her class avg was too high, FYI a 95% is an A. The TAs were very helpful, go to them as much as possible.
Sister Davis knows her stuff. She is an awesome professor that knows how to explain difficult physics concepts as simply as possible. Tests can be tough, but if you study the concepts covered in class and make sure you understand them well you'll be fine! She has great TA's too.
I wish I could give a 3.5. Something that is very positive is that she really likes answering questions. That being said, sometimes it really interfered with her ability to complete the lecture for that day which got really frustrating when we were answering the same question 20 times a lecture and don't actually learn the material efficiently.
I complained about this class throughout the entire thing. In my mind it was flawed. But in the end I wouldn't have taken this class from anyone else. It is really hard but you end up learning extremely well. I can look back and see the incredible progress I made. Take this class if you care about physics and are going to use it. Plan on working.
Great class! I took it winter 2019 and it payed off! Her class is group oriented so you work in groups for the labs. There is a group test before the normal test and its pretty easy and a great way to review for the actual test. If you know how to do the problems, the tests are pretty easy. She doesn't want to confuse you and is willing to help out
For a teacher who spends her free time researching teaching methods, she's terrible at it. Lectures were so unorganized and hard to follow. She is not clear about anything, I felt like every lecture with her I took 3 steps backward. She thinks struggling is the best way to learn. Her teaching style did not mesh with me at all. DON'T TAKE FROM HER.
Prof Davis is nice and is obviously passionate about physics. It's physics, so it's hard and you have to work for your grade. HOWEVER, the readings didn't prepare you for lectures, nor did lectures for homework, homework for quizzes, or quizzes for exams. Be prepared to use Khan Academy and teach yourself. 105 should be worth more than 3 credits.
She prides herself on her "flipped classroom", so you're on your own to learn everything. Also, don't expect to come to class to receive any clarification, as her lectures are very chaotic and based on group work where everyone is just as lost as you. It isn't a terrible teaching philosophy, but her implementation of it is absolutely terrible.
I don't really understand the bad rep that Davis gets. She's super kind and super helpful. People just need to understand that this is a physics class and it's going to require work and some time dedicated to it. She is so willing to help and is overall just super kind. Do your homework and get help when you need it and it'll be a great class! :)
Whoever said that Davis is the best at teaching you how to problem solve is not the average student. She is horrible at teaching, and loses most of the class during every lecture. She will not teach you how to do hw, she will teach you one concept and then expects you to figure out how to do all of the problems on your own. highly do not recommend.
She is easily the worst professor I've ever had in college. I didn't learn a single thing from her lectures; they are super chaotic. Nothing in her lectures prepare you for the homework or tests. Be prepared to teach yourself literally everything in this class cause she for sure won't do it.
As others have said, she's easily the worst professor I've had in what is approaching three years of college at two different universities. She's too prideful to address the inadequacies in her teaching methods, so each semester her students suffer as a result. I am sure she's a good person, but she's a terrible professor avoid her if you can.
Don't take this class. I have a knowledge of physics and am really good at math, professor Davis didn't teach me the whole semester and wouldn't help students who asked for help. Content wasn't hard the teacher was just bad.
Absolutely Horrible. I took Calc based Physics in High school which is the only reason I did well. You are better off skipping lecture completely and watching khan academy, because lectures are overly simplified and HW is much more difficult. Worst Prof I ever had
She is a strong believer in that it is your responsibility to learn, to the point where it is all about you discovering on your own... aka she doesn't teach you nearly enough and you have to figure it out. I TA in the physics department now and this attitude seems to be growing. Read, study the material, and don't expect class to be much help.
Sister Davis is a very nice woman, but I struggled more in her class than any other class I've ever taken. I attended every class, TA session, did every assignment, and met with my TA for a few hours each week and I'm still barely scraping by. Everything I have learned has been from my TA or the internet and it is never enough for the test.
If you like surprise weekend tests only open Friday evenings and Saturdays then take this class. If you like teaching yourself everything, take this class. If you like a disorganized and confusing environment, take this class.
I felt lost the entire class. I understood the lecture material but then I would go and do the homework it would be something totally different. TAs were useless, I asked them questions in the zoom chat and they never responded. Learn things online to be successful because she explains things in the most confusing way. No help given for test prep
Professor Davis is a great professor. She really loves physics and teaches this class for fun, which is great. The downside is that her class doesn't transition too well to Zoom. She gets frustrated when people don't participate, but then doesn't allow people to unmute themselves. Too much time wasted in breakout rooms. Stuff like that.
Terrible teacher, she taught some of the concepts, but that had nothing to do with any of the homework and didnt help at all with the tests. Dont take this teacher, but if you have to, get ready to watch a lot of khan academy.
Do NOT take this class from Prof Davis. She is NOT accessible outside of class. She is NOT clear in lectures (wastes your time). Class does NOT prepare you for homework. Homework does NOT prepare you for quizzes. Quizzes do NOT prepare you for exams. Get ready to study outside of class A LOT. There are occasional group exams which are a life saver.
I'm sure she's wonderful, but I reached out to Prof Davis via email on several occasions about problems with homework software (not letting me submit, etc). She NEVER responded. Because of this I have several 0s in the gradebook. She is NOT accessible outside of class. If you have to take physics from her, GOOD LUCK... you'll need it.
She is easily the worst professor I have ever had. Her lectures are so horrible that halfway through the semester, I stopped attending them. I had to teach myself everything that she was supposed to cover. Additionally, she ignores or avoids questions that you ask during class, and is inaccessible outside of class. No exam prep is offered either.
Mrs. Davis was the worst teacher that I have ever had. She is hard to contact outside of class, she never answers questions, her grading criteria is all over the place and the questions she writes are very poorly written and she will not hold herself accountable to her own mistakes. She will surprise you with midterms, with 4 hours to take them.
While she is super nice, thats about the only good thing I can say. Physics is tough no matter who you take it from, but she doesnt make it any easier. Lots of surprise tests that are only open on Friday and Saturday. My issue is that her grading scale has an A at 95 and above which is crazy for how much the final is weighted. Do not recommend.
I can see her teaching style working in an in person setting but it did not work for online. I was so lost the entire time and tried to talk to her but she didn't listen to my concerns. This was a super hard class and I spent so much time on it. Physics apparently isn't my strong suit but Sister Davis didn't help much. The tests are crazy hard too.
She genuinely cares about her students. I just felt like her lectures were long and not helpful. There's a lot of demos and not a lot of explaining. I didn't feel like the lectures prepared me for the exams, they were tough!
I am a premed student with a 3.9 GPA at BYU. Never have I been in such a poorly organized course at this school. It's up to chance if you'll be put in a smart group for the group tests, which are small percentages of your grade. I would recommend taking it in SLC at all costs. Studied for this class 2x as much as Biochem, wouldn't recommend.
Let's be honest. This class was kinda a wash. Covid hasn't made things any easier. The lectures did little to help me learn. Sister Davis is nice, she made extra time to have office hours, and she cares about her students. There were 4 individual exams (counting final), and 3 group exams. She comes up with questions. Hard!
Dr. Davis might be your only option for Physics 105, but just to warn you, her class sucks. Her lectures are terribly boring and long. She forces participation in recitation groups that are very annoying. Her tests are mostly conceptual so if you just do the homework you won't do well.
Cheryl Davis is a good person but a horrible teacher. She does not teach subject matter at all. If you take her class, prepare to teach yourself the content through your textbook. She does not make it easy to pass her class.
I'm not even two weeks into the class and it's already the worst organized class I've ever had. She makes it seem like she's available to help but she's not. Homework is due 3 hours after class ends, and it already takes 3 hours to do, and she doesn't even teach everything that's on the homework. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!
Terrible, I guess u could call her a teacher. It makes it seems like her goal is just to confuse everyone and then end class. She gives no direction. She is suppose to be an expert in teaching but this is the worst class I have ever taken she explains nothing just does problems with you . I think its honestly because she just doesnt know physics
Teaches as if we already know how to solve the problems, which is really hard since we don't. Tries to help us figure it out but does it without giving us any background info, so you are in the dark 97% of the time with nothing to go off. Surprised us with a test 2 days before it opened that wasn't on learning suite. I had to learn through YouTube.
Yeah, she sucks.
Her lectures are so bad. She just starts with problems with no background. Im sure she thinks its some innovative way of teaching but whatever it is shes doing it wrong. You cant expect students to know physic concepts w/o teaching them it first. She wants to to figure out how to get there urself but not possible in a factual based class lol.
Teachers like this is whats wrong with BYU. Teaches nothing writes hard test. Claims that she taught all the material. Then has an A be a 95%. Also most the time she the only choice for physics which is also a huge joke. BYU needs to fix stuff like this its sad I pay money to teach myself. Sister Davis please just lecture like a normal prof.
Un- prepared teacher. She doesnt teach just gives practice problems would be great if you already knew the concepts. Expect to do everything yourself. She is horrible at explaining correct way of doing things. She spends 90% of time going into detail of the incorrect way to do it and 10% of the time the correct very confusing. Bad teacher!
Worst professor at BYU hands down! DO whatever u can to not take this class from her. She is horrible at explaining concepts. She doesnt keep the schedule updated. She is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. Not sure why BYU still lets her teach. Lectures pointless to watch better learning on Kahn academy. She is horrible.
Bad teacher. Poor class design. Im sure shes a nice person. But a horrible teacher some people are just not ment to teach. Hope BYU fires her soon and doesnt make poor student suffer through her horrible class.
DO NOT take this class from her. I have been at BYU for 5 years and this is by far the worst class I have had. She does not prepare you for her extremely hard tests and provides no study guide or reviews. Her lectures are so unorganized and everyone is always lost. Very unimpressed how BYU has not changed anything after all these negative reviews
Yeah this class sucks. So take physics somewhere else and get it transferred over from the college you take it from. Her class level is like this: Class--> This is how you ride a bike. Weekly quiz --> figure out how a car works. Final exam--> send a rocket into space, discover a new planet and come back to earth in 1 day.#Teach yourself everything
She is very very hard to follow both in class and online. Group-work is everything in this class and she really wants people to figure things out on their own. It could work, but online it doesn't and you just end up getting really frustrated. She doesn't explain practice problems thoroughly and it's hard to tell what the exact answer is.
She is the worst ever. She makes her tests crazy difficult and an A is a 95% so it is almost impossible to get an A. Also going to her office hours are not helpful. She knows her stuff, but she cannot teach to save her life. Most people left the lectures more confused than before.
Lectures were super confusing and concepts were not always super clear... Exams were very hard and because there were very few questions it was hard to get a good grade after missing a couple questions. Get a good group for this class because you will learn more with your group than in lectures!
Pros: Productive group work. Cons: Her office hours are pointless. She just talks mad heat on you. Not enough TAs. They dont have any lab hours. Legit only one TA had lab hours on Saturdays. An A is a 95% and the class average on exams is between a D- and C+. Her homework doesnt reflect whats on the exams. Wonderful lady but her class is rough.
This class is unnecessarily difficult, but if you need to take 105 I think she may be the only one that offers it, so I thought I'd weigh in on how to do well! use your TA's and your group! Sister Davis really wants to be a good teacher but she's not. In fact, it's one of the worst experiences I've had in lectures so far at BYU.
Dont go to lecture except for the group exams. She makes students explain things during lectures and when the students are wrong she doesnt clarify. No one knows how to solve the questions and she doesnt help. Just watch Khan Academy, take it at SLC, or pray for a miracle. This class took more time than O-Chem 2 and Neuro 480 combined.
Dr. Davis knew physics really well. Biggest plus was that she gives a TON of extra credit. Over 2% extra credit is offered. That being said the A is a 95% so it's still difficult. Honestly I was super scared after reading these reviews to take it, but it was one of the classes that I learned the most in. tests are hard, but it's possible to do well!
Super easy class. Easy A. Not a great professor at teaching aspects of the material but good at getting the general point across. If you struggle with learning Physics concepts on your own then I would personally avoid this class. If you are good with physics and want an easy A, take this class.
The class set up with the TAs was a hot mess. Her lectures didn't jive with me. Easy to pass, almost impossible to get an A. She is really nice to talk to, but again her lectures weren't good at all.
This class is honestly so hard! Maybe not because of the content, but because of the confusing way sister davis presents the material. Kahn academy taught me more than she ever could. She never explains how to do the math in class so you are left to your own devices for the homework. The one saving grace is that she gave out a bunch of extra credit
I liked Sister Davis because she taught clearly and helped us work through things and actually learn. There is regular homework but only a couple problems for each class, I feel like it was enough to help me understand the material. She doesn't spend a lot of time defining things in class, she spends most of class doing demonstrations/practice.
The reviews for Sister Davis are a hot mess. Her teaching style certainly isn't for everyone. She likes to make students explore new topics first, then only explains those topics (tho very clearly) only AFTER the students have struggled through it. Many students get lost by this style, but if you can keep up in lecture and do the homework, its fine
She co-teaches with her husband. Their way of teaching was to have you do problems before you know how to solve them, which in theory is a great method, but rather than teaching it in class, they want you to read all of the chapters beforehand, which is not easy to do if you have a heavy course load. Not very good at explaining concepts either.
Sister Davis is actually a great professor, you just need to put yourself out there to go to her office hours and establish a relationship with her. She taught Physics 121 with her husband, and they are both hilarious. She lectures based on the textbook, so make sure you read the chapters before class.
Professor Davis is probably the best teacher I have ever had. The class was tough, to be sure, with LOTS of homework, quizzes, and tests, but everything was specifically designed to teach the material. I left this class knowing the material better than almost any other class I have ever taken. If you have the time, take physics from Davis.
She seems determined to reinvent the wheel. She always assigns readings and videos that are about the theory of education, rather than physics. She refuses to provide answers for homework. The entire class is based on group work. Everything I learned was from Google. Lectures are at best useless, and at worst they're confusing.
The class is taught as if you have taken physics before, and this is probably one of the worst classes to get introduced to physics. The lectures are confusing, and most of the class is group work. On the positive side, the TAs are very helpful. Overall would not recommend.
Here is what you need! Bro & Sis David are great, but the concepts learned in class are usually what you read in the pre-class, homework is difficult because not all concepts are covered in class, not enough example problems in class correlate with the homework, tests are fairly concept-related, and quizzes can contain concepts not yet learned. GL.
If you have any other professors in mind go for it. Professor Davis was not good. The homework loud is so much to be a 3 credit class, hw is also unorganized and the lectures are boring and I learn more from other sources than the actual lecture.
I want to be fair here, but I haven't had a great experience. I went to every lecture, skimmed the textbook, worked on every assignment, and still failed these tests. Lectures involve level 1 problems/thinking, homework level 5, test level 4, and this format made me feel confused. She is a good teacher, and she cares, but teaches irrelevant content
This class is hard but doable if you do it right. My recommendation is to get help from your classmates who understand the material. Do not worry too much about your grades on tests. They don't have that much of an effect on your final grade. I failed almost every single one of her tests and still got a B. Don't be afraid to ask questions!
I really didn't feel like I got anything out of the lectures. I learned most outside of class. Which is what I think they want you to do anyways. The tests were pretty difficult and usually included curveball questions that past homework or quizzes didn't do much to prepare you for.
The lectures can be fun, but I learned nothing in the lectures. I did better studying the textbook or using google than going to lecture. The homework was incredibly hard, as I rarely learned how to do any of the homework questions in class. Only reason I got an A and not a B was because I got lucky with my TA section. My TA's were flipping awesome
I think this professor gets quite a few bad ratings on here just because the course is hard. Having taken a physics class before will make it much easier. There was quite a bit of work, but it was all helpful in preparing for exams. Homework was graded on completion if you go to the TA section. The TA sections were particularly useful.
She was the worst professor I had at BYU my first semester. She gives an excessive amount of homework and doesn't teach you how to do any of it beforehand. If you have not taken a physics class before it will be very hard. I had to get a tutor to help and I recommend that. There is a lot of groupwork so choose your groupmates wisely.
Sister Davis is a really nice lady but she is horrible at teaching. The homeworks are hard but are probably what you would imagine physics homework to be like. But the tests were ridiculous. They were crazy hard and not like the homework at all. I had no idea how to study for them. There were sooo many assignments for this class. Don't take!!
The Davis' do not teach anything difficult. It is very basic in lecture, but then the homeworks and quizzes are extremely difficult and contain new material. I learned 1000x more from my TA and from my classmates than I did from the Davis'. Physics is hard but not impossible when your professor actually teaches you the material . Lecture is a joke.
Physics is hard, flat out. But I feel like lectures never helped me on the homework. Most learning was through figuring it out on my own with other's help, which is what they want, but it took so much time that it never felt worth it to me sadly. Tests are exhausting, and be ready to figure out how to study for them. Not the worst, but not the best
If you haven't taken any physics courses prior to this class, don't take from the Davis's. I only got the grade I got because of my amazing TA's. Here are some of the Davis's philosophies on teaching: 1) The textbook is the teacher 2) Lectures are for conceptual learning 3) Peers and TA's are teachers 4) Tests are "learning opportunities"
The class is seriously disorganized. TAs were barely ever given instruction, but tried their best. There is an over abundance of exams (group and individual), all of them vary in their weight on your grade which you won't find out until it is in the gradebook and has already tanked your grade because half the topics on the exam weren't taught.
I never took physics in high school or college algebra. So I struggled a lot. However, I did not cheat, I studied, and I got a B in the class. If you are ahead of me, then you should do much better than I did in the class. We had lots of tests, lots of group tests, and lots of hw graded on completion. I didn't like the way the course was organized.
Very disorganized class. Even the ta's were often confused. Didn't explain the topics, expected the students to magically understand it after reading it and teach each other. Homework was graded on completion and we were rarely told if right or wrong. I normally enjoy hard classes and how previous physics classes (123 and 121) were but they suck!!!
Okay, I was so worried about taking this class from her after reading all the reviews, now that I am in the class I have realized there is a negative bias to people who don't do well in physics. Prof. Davis uses identical problems in class to those she puts on the test, if you learn to use symbolic equations early you will kill it!
It seems to me that Cheryl Davis understands the material well, she knows what she's talking about. That being said, she refuses to share what she knows. She expects you to magically learn the material on your own. When I ask for help with a question or concept, she refuses to answer. I love physics but I hate her teaching method.
honestly - she is so funny, but lectures are terrible - your TA will be your best friend, they taught me everything beayse I literally learned nothing in lecture- sister davis tries but the way she teaches just is not helpful, she never finishes the material and happens to "forget" to talk about important equations making the tests are SO HARD
This class was very disorganized. Sister Davis is genuinely a good person but her lectures were a mess. I was always confused and she would always forget to tell us very important things. There were so many tests, my TA and Khan Academy literally saved me. If you want a social life this semester, don't take this class from her.
Lectures are an incredible waste of time. She spends hours going over simple concepts and skips things that would actually be useful to know. Going to lectures doesn't seem to make a difference in how well you do in the class. To succeed, go to TA sections and work with your group on HW problems and do all the extra credit assignments on time.
I had to withdraw from the class. I retook it from a better professor, Dr. Ireland, and got an A-. Davis is the worst. She is a horrible teacher. As others have said, she teaches easy things in class and makes it all seem so simple. Then the test comes out of nowhere! Please heed this warning. She is seriously as bad as people are saying.
She takes the time to answer your questions. If physics comes easy to you pick another professor or spend time with the TA's. If your nervous about physics or struggle to understand she takes the time to help those who need it understand in class and she let's people ask the night before what they want her to focus on in the lecture.
She is a caring teacher for sure but the physics department and curriculum is garbage. This was her first time teaching the class this semester and the lectures were not great and I would often walk away confused. It is very important in this class to have friends to study with because you have to work out lots of concepts with them and the TA's.
Sister Davis is great. She is really good at explaining concepts and is willing to help at any time. You will do well if you actually do the textbook readings before class. Her tests focus on concepts rather than math (though there is some math), and if you could understand lectures and homework, the tests were pretty straightforward.
Sister Davis is not the best lecturer but she really cares about student success. There are lots of chances to correct mistakes on quizzes and often even on exams. That being said, an A was 95%
She makes concepts seem easy, then gives you homework and quizzes whose content that was never discussed in class. She has office hours, but she is never there for them, even when you make an appointment with her. There is never a TA in the lab either, even though they say that they're always there. Basically, you're on your own in this class.
She cares about her students very much. If you need help on tests or homework, set up a time to meet with her and she well be very accommodating. She let me take the final in a different classroom and was very understanding with any extenuating circumstance.
Honestly, definitely not my favorite professor. The main complaint I have with her is that she is simply just a poor lecturer. I spent half of most lectures being frustrated because the concepts were not portrayed well and the other half being angry at myself that I did not choose a different professor to teach me physics.
Just not good in lectures. Honestly, the only reason this class works is because the TAs are able to help in recitation labs. I stopped attending lectures because I realized how useless they were in actually helping me learn the concepts as I walked away more confused than if I didn't go at all. And the class is poorly structured.
Sister Davis, put simply, is a terrible lecturer. The stuff done in class is extremely easy and gone over wayyyy too much. Then everyone gets blindsided by tests and even the homework sometimes. In my opinion, if you give everyone 10% extra credit on every exam and the average is still 70%, maybe it's time to rethink your teaching strategy.
Sister Davis did her research in Physics education and it shows; she really knows how to make physics accessible and understandable! She allows for test corrections to get points back and before each exam there is a group test that. Her priority is that you really learn and understand the material.
Sister Davis is amazing. I'm an absolute IDIOT at physics and my grade shows it. But she never gave up on me! We went over everything in office hours and went over my tests and she tried so hard to help me get the concepts. Unfortunately I'm just bad at physics and didn't get the best grade. But that's not her fault! She's so caring and kind.
This class is just hard and I am not sure how much of that is the professors fault. But her lectures never made any sense and the TAs carried me though.
Professor Davis is very concept based. Because of this, the more prepared you come to class from the reading, the more connections you will be able to make. She structures the course to be very involved, you will have daily recitation hours with TAs and the lectures are more discussion/practice based than actual lecture, but YOU WILL LEARN!
Lectures are a hit-or-miss, but the TAs are great for helping with homework and concepts. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for practice and test prep. Overall, the class is manageable with some extra effort.
Material covered in lecture often doesn't translate to the homework, and tests are heavily based off information from personal study of the textbook rather than material covered during the lecture. The class is huge and that contributes to the difficulty of receiving any help. The lectures are entertaining though!
Her lectures are fun but they are way to easy, feels like she is more concerned with entertaining you than actually going over material that you'll be tested on. The TAs are really good though and if you go to them they will help you out. Exams are really tough compared to the quizzes and the group exams.
