I found her intimidating, and yet when I look back on those instances I had direct contact with her, she was friendly and informative each time. She has a forceful personality, but was never nasty (to me, at least).

Has some difficulty predicting what subjects students will find challenging. Burns valuable time reteaching simple concepts, then rushes through material that is heavily tested later. Difficult to predict the final. Very friendly/helpful out of class.

I had Dr. Duxbury for 140 and 241. She is a very ignorant person who thinks she is better than everyone else. Unfortunately for us, the students, her attitude makes it very difficult to learn because she makes you feel stupid when you ask her questions.

A hell of a prof. The final exam was difficult, but I'd rather have a bullet in the head than a life without challenges, learning takes work. She was very helpful outside of class. The tutorials were useless.

Cheryl is Dr Jekyl-Mr Hyde. One day she loves you and the next she pretends she doesn't know your name. Apparently she doesn't realize that out tuition pays her salary. She will not respond to ANY emails...don't even bother!

She seems nice when she's teaching, but when dealing with her one on one she's very rude and intimidating. She knows her stuff, but is also arrogant. Sci 255 tests are challenging but not impossible. Lab exams are horribly specific and pointless. Overall Duxbury is a necessary evil in Science at UW.

Useless lab structure, why do we have to copy flow charts out of the manual? Why do we only get to look at our pointless quizzes for 2 seconds before they go into the vault? Lab dragged my mark down by 15%.

Shes not as bad as everyone has made her out to be. She obviously gets a million emails a day and is only gonna reply to those that she feels necessary. I've dealt with her many times and she DOES care about the students. Indeed her lab exams are tricky not to mention confusing as hell.

I have a theory, she hates men. If you're a female she'll be civil and answer your questions. If you're a male then any question becomes a stupid question to her and she spits fire. Beware, if you plan on TA'ing, then she's your boss and she'll hate you no matter what (unless u dont have a ****)

She is by far one of the most caring individuals I have ever corresponded with at UW. Flexible, knowledgeable, friendly, kind and helpful. I plan to nominate her for a staff recognition award. Probably the best experience at UW I've had and one of the greatest profs ever. So what if she's all about details at least U learn something in the end.

Explains things really in detail. Expect to hear and write down everything she says in class, because it will be on the exam, eventhough you are provided with lecture notes. She is a hard marker. Expects out of you too much. Dont take this class to get a high average. Finally, she is very intimidating. It is very scary approaching her.

A very strict prof, don't try to get away with anything easy! She seems very busy so she can't really ans ur questions with depth! A fair marker leaning to the hard side. If u want a good mark, u have to put A LOT of work in it. Directions are not always clear, communication therefore could be a problem. She might make you feel stupid at times

Cheryl Duxbury is not only a lecturer but also a lab instructor. I do not think you seem to understand that not only does she teach a few classes here and there but she has a alot of work with the labs she coordinates. Cheryl Dusbury is a nice person, she also very helpful. She helped me get into Biol 345 when there was no space left. Thanks Cheryl

likes to keep the lab average really low, so even if you have a stellar report you may not get a great grade. she's not very helpful and doesn't seem to like dealing with students. but since she's a lab instructor for a lot of courses, you don't really have a choice, you have to deal with her. good luck!

Excellent Prof, very willing to help students. The course is interesting - highly recommended. The midterms are tough, but there are no surprises. Go to classes b/c she gives hints. Also recommend reading the textbook and doing the end of chapter questions. The final exam was fair, but make sure you review everything from day one.

THis many people can't be wrong. She has the second lowest rating in the entire department and plenty of reviews...the law of large numbers has not been kind to her and there is a reason why. Once you get to know her, she can be very kind. As lab coordinator, she has a tough job and has to put up with a lot. Anyone would get fed up! Try talking to her, being nice, and she'll be nicer to you.

Fair teacher, however the exams were relatively hard, should of used multiple choice as asking students to memorize all the lecture notes is not a good way of learning, however the lecture notes presented are fairly clear.

She has the hardest exams ever and I am in third year and have therefore written many exams. For this lab exam, read the references in the textbook. It's a VERY difficult exam! Her assignments were ok but the final was unreasonable. It was all short and long answer questions so basically you had to memorize everything (even diagrams!!)in order to do well. Not very impressed with the format of the exam.

Prof. Duxbury is excellent & helpful. The course was very interesting, & the assignments were reasonable, but required a fair bit of work. I agree with the previous comment – the final was difficult! I would not recommend this course for anyone without a solid foundation in first year biology, unless you are prepared to study loads. Good luck.

Terrible, terrible teacher. She is an absolute bore in lectures. She is very slow and will only cover a handful of slides. Very repetitive too. Her tests are very hard and you only get one hour to finish them. I highly recommend you STAY AWAY from her classes.

Ridiculously repetitive in her teachings. Would take an entire lesson to get a message through that would be sufficiently done with a singe sentence. Unorganized in markings, planning classes, and overhead notes. Made an extremely interesting course feel like a ridiculous, fake course taught by an airhead, sham of a professor.

I really liked her. Yes she is repetitive but that way you pretty much know what's gonna be on the tests cause it's gonna be said 10 times. Shes very helpful if you have any questions about material as well. Piece of advice, study for tests with a partner and ask each other questions. It'll help you get all the "in between info" that she looks for.

Prof Duxbury is very friendly and approachable. Classes can be dull at times but it is worth receiving such thorough explanation that she provides. She is very busy but nonetheless finds time to help if you visit her in the office!! An excellent prof, and I hope to have her again... tip: tests are a bit tricky!

She is interested in the material and knows it well. Blunt, honest, and sincere (she may come of as a b*** sometimes, but she is actually a very nice and understanding person). She wants people to do well, but she wont tolerate ignorance (if you are going to ask her questions be specific). Also, she doesn't tolerate people talking in class :)

Worst course to take in UW. Workload is greater and more difficult than any 3rd or 4th year Science course. Amount of detail required for full marks is ludicrous. Assignment takes longer than any Science lab ever done. Replies email in 3 weeks. Highly NOT recommended for science students planning on pursuing professional degrees as will drop you

Labs are meant to help you understand concepts introduced in lecture material. It is highly unfortunate that the write-ups require so much inane number analysis that the actual concepts are lost in a sea of incomprehensible garbage. This lab course will only serve to push you to sanity's limit as you attmpt to understand her ill-written "help."

The lab component is ridiculous. There is little educational value to the labs. Additionally, the labs take the longest time out of all science labs I have ever taken (coming from a third year science student). Unfortunately, the lab component is mandatory and part of lecture, so unless you're willing to spend countless days, DO NOT TAKE BIOL 354!!

Honestly, DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE unless you enjoy making university difficult for yourself. The Midterms are short and long answer with very few if at all any one word answer questions and require excessive amounts of detail. Plan on spending the most amount of time studying for this course. This course ruined my average, the choice is yours.

No textbook for background information. Midterms were difficult, final is impossible. There is a trend with her midterms, they're too long and require you to remember every and alot of detail. Notes are not organized. Honestly, avoid this course at all costs it will only lower your average. Assignment took a week. Hard course for a "SCI" course.

DON'T TAKE THIS COURSE especially if you are first year. She doesn't seem to understand how stressful first year can be, and midterms have to have EXACT definitions in your own words-not at all like it was written in the lecture notes, otherwise there are no part marks given. No slack is cut, assignment takes a week to do without any help from her.

The final and midterms were more difficult than all the exams I've written in my three years here. There is no textbook. Asks for discrete details on everything for full marks. This course is HIGHLY NOT recommended. Although it is a 2nd year SCI course the workload is more like a 4th year BIOL course. GPA KILLER!!!

Duxbury pretty much ruined my university average as this year was important for professional school. One low mark drastically affects your average and makes all the difference in the world. This course is extremely difficult for 2ndyear SCI course and requires SPECIFIC details that are not even seen in third year biology courses. YOU WILL REGRET!!

This lab is required as it is part of the course mark. The quizzes and lab reports are moderate in difficulty but mostly depend on your TA marking style. Dr. Duxbury is a good prof if you get on her good side (she gave me a reference letter). I did well in this course. Her exam was very long but not difficult. If you can't formulate your answers quickly, you will have a hard time with this course. Overall, if you have a strong biology background and do your work you will do fine.

IGNORE OTHER COMMENTS! This professor teaches clearly and her grades are fair. You get what you put into a course, so if you study enough you will receive a great mark. Best way to contact her is to call, as she does not respond to emails. Other students with negative comments did poorly because of a poor effort. I recommend taking this course!!

Had Cheryl for 140L and 241. She is a GREAT instructor! She is clear and precise about what she expects from students. Everyone who complains just doesn't know how to study well/properly. Exams were straight-forward, labs were my favourite of university. Also a great resource if you're interested in microbio.

I sincerely hope no one has any reason to contact this woman. She's disgustingly rude and condescending. I sent her an email, already walking on eggshells because I knew she could be difficult, and the response was absolutely horrid. I'd recommend avoiding any class where you'd have to see her on a weekly basis.

Great course! Extremely interesting if you are interested in health and medicine. She is a very thorough prof but you must go to class. This class is quite a bit of work, especially the assignment, but if you put in the time and are good at fully explaining your thoughts you will do well.

I don't know what everyone else is saying about the final exam, everyone I've talked to found the exam pretty straight forward, just know your stuff (methods, results, and concepts) and you should get a pretty good mark. She tries tricking you with multiple choice answers like (a and b, none of the above, all of the above) but even then still easy.

I dont understand the point of tricking students with a, b, a and b or all the above choices. You may know all your information but she will throw you off with her tricky choices.

Interesting course. Lab book was very helpful and easy to use. I thought i did well on the exam but didn't. There is alot to study for the exam but definitely take this with the course, its very helpful.

Slides are totally overloaded, and her daughter could have done the colour coding. Repeats a lot, course content is easy but a lot. Midterms and finals were fair. Tutorial is helpful to some extent. Dr. Duxbury is a very direct person and sometimes very unfriendly and everything but hearty.

Duxbury's notes are very helpful. It's like getting your work done for you. The assignments are work but she marks really fairly so you shall be rewarded well for your efforts. Overall, a great course and I am satisfied with my mark.

She is probably the worst teacher I have had in my entire undergraduate career. Where did she get her qualifications from? She is very condescending, takes months to grade ANYTHING and she needs to stop using random fillers like "essentially" etc. which make her sentences make no sense.

This prof is the worst prof I think I have ever had. I can't believe she has ANY degree. It is baffling how she is able to teach when she knows absolutely nothing. Her sentences make absolutely no sense as she just throws in random words. Terrible just terrible.

Very unorganized prof. She took an extremely long time to mark the midterms and her marking scheme is extremely specific and detailed. She only accepts the answer she wants (which is hard to tell since she gives so much extra unnecessary information in lecture). Very rude in person, laughs in your face a lot when you ask questions.

Marks fairly or as expected for a science course. She wants detail so those who give vague answers will not do well. The exam was tough but she marked that fairly easily. Overall, a good course and a good prof. She does take a lot of time to mark though.

Terrible teaching of this course, her lecture slides are overwhelming and hard to organize into actual study notes. Literally uses the word "essentially" in every sentence of every lecture. She takes an extremely long time to mark midterms, even recorded my mark wrong and has very inconsistent office hours.

Her powerpoints are not organized well but have all of the content you need. Midterms and exams are very straightforward and questions can easily be predicted based on how she lectures the material. She also highlights key things to know for the midterm and final. Overall the course is easy to do well in however shes not the best lecturer.

She takes her time on each slide, but this helps solidify the concepts she is trying to convey. Tests are written and extremely long; she gave 30 min extra. The questions may be vague, but the answers require more effort/specificity. She was also very nice during office hours when I needed help.

I had no chance to actually visit her office hours, but I met her for the first time on the final exam day and she actually yelled directly at us during our final. She actually said something discouraging. Pop quizzes have no rhyme or reason - very random. The final had bacteria we didn't work with.

Duxbury is the lab coordinator for Biol 345. Absolutely no compassion for students. She likes to humiliate people. She can't teach. Has anger management issues. Steers away from responsibilities. These days anyone with PhD can be a prof. She ruins the experience of a student. No matter what course she is involved in.

The midterm and final were honestly the most writing I have ever had to do. As a lecturer, she can be a little all over the place, but still gets the job done. Seems to have a genuine interest in the topic of aging.

Cheryl is an intimidating woman. She comes off as loud and rude. Her class wasn't too difficult but her lecture slides are packed with information. She tends to go in circles while talking in lecture which makes it hard to follow and a bit confusing. Not a terrible prof, but be warned.

She was the lab coordinator for many labs. Cheryl is a smart woman, but she is very cold when dealing with people and even as a 4th year I was intimidated by her to the point were I would not approach her to get questions answered. She has very strict marking standards, and once you understand what is expected of you it is easy to get good marks.

From the little interaction that I had with her, she seemed like a heartless women. The tests also test on quite irrelevant material in my opinion; they mostly focus on small details that could easily be looked, rather than probing understanding of overarching concepts (finished with 90 in the class, so not complaining b/c I did bad).

I've had duxbury for multiple courses and she's been nothing but amazing to me. I go to her office hours and ask questions she's always willing to help. This class is fairly straight forward with the assignments and the exam. As long as you keep on top of everything you'll get a great mark! She marks fairly!

It was her first time teaching this course, and she did the best she could. The course was a little difficult to follow, with a long final but it was doable. The labs are chill, but study for the quizzes as they are difficult and did bring people's marks down. She'll probably change the course next year.

Very rude, not helpful. Her course I had to teach myself which itself was informative, but she was not encouraging. Went to her office once to ask for a lab section change and she kept telling me how much of a favour she was doing me, felt like I was being talked down to constantly. Also her quizzies/exam are have irrelevant questions, no thought.

Duxbury is a fair marker even though the exams are way too long. She is enthusiastic in class though her slides are disorganized. She is very caring BUT very unapproachable. Always responds very defensively if you ask her anything. Still easy to get a good mark as long as you write what's on her slides word for word on the exams.

LONG exams and you have to write exactly what she's looking for or you're not going to get the marks you believe you want and when you talk to her about it she'll be rude about everything. Rude during exams too. If you're going to ask a question get ready to hear "you should know this"

Her lab manuals contain a lot of mistakes, so watch out for those! If you were thinking of asking her questions in office hours, you're better off not doing so, as she will only put you down and be rude. Biggest advice: Try taking the lab component with another instructor.

One of the RUDEST professors I've ever encountered at the University of Waterloo. She is condescending and disrespectful. Will easily get angry at students when they reach out for help, questions, or even to pick up lab reports. Even her TAs dread talking to her. Her lab manual is riddled with mistakes and has obviously not been edited. Avoid!

If you do not have to take a class with her please don't. She is very arrogant,made gerontology harder than it had to be, has anger management issues and will quickly yell at students in class, a 4th grader has better grammatical structure when it comes to her lectures and posts. After taking three labs run by her, Cheryl Duxbury is one of the worst individuals I've experienced so far in university. I've barely met her in person, but the couple times I have have been nightmares and her self-importance, passive-aggressiveness, and lack of caring toward her students come across clearly in every possible aspect of her courses.

So rude. Sent her a kind email about missing a lab and got an email back with no hello or sign off and sent from her iphone. Incoherent and misspelled just like the lab manual. She didn't understand why I thought section A students couldn't make up a lab in section B. It's written in the lab manual! Such disrespect, its crazy. Avoid her!

bio 355 was one of the most information dense courses I've taken. Duxbury is a very blunt and straightforward. She can come across very cold but she is 100% fair. the class was 30% midterm and 55% final. she make the final online to make life easier, so nice. She is a hard marker and does look for the details but If you try, you'll be fine

Extremely rude and treats students terribly. The way she sets up the course is like she wants people to fail. I personally have never disliked a professor in any way in my 3+ years of university until this prof. She comes into our lab sessions and harshly criticizes our work. Its one thing to tell you when you did something wrong, its another when she makes you feel stupid and embarrasses you in front of your peers. The learning environment is unpleasant.

- 4yr student --> at least 5 Duxbury labs - confusing lab manuals (1 TA said the manual needed revision. Another admitted she struggled understanding it too) - sometimes hella confusing lab report guidelines (eg Biol 354L, spring '23) - does nothing in lab sessions. TAs are informally the ones in charge (prelab work, lab briefings, grading reports)

Tough as a teacher but fair, really helped me out when I messed up on one of the participation and has worked with me to get my grades in even though I forgot to change the iClicker email. The content is pretty fair and straight forward and everything you would need is in the lecture slides and you would need to explain it more than how she would.

Worst prof I have ever had, the lack of empathy, respect and kindness shown towards ALL of her students is unfathomable. I was sick, got a VIF, accidentally forgot to message her about it and when I did she was so rude. She messaged me with text-to-speech and said "OK" after every sentence. Ie. you should've messaged me OK? this is unacceptable OK
