Amazing Teacher so helpful, cares about students, boring material in text is converted to real world usefullness, she doesnt want you to just know how malware works, she wants you to protect yourself and computer! Always has relevant information! Take this class lots of fun extra credit too! Shes funny and approachable!
If you have to take this required course, GET THIS PROF! She makes otherwise boring stuff really interesting, relevant and easy to understand. She keeps you engaged and does great exam reviews ( trivia games). You get to try out Google Glass, make things fly with your thoughts---cool stuff! Provides detailed, useful feedback on your assignments.
Made learning about computers fun. The content can be quite boring but she tries really hard to make it more interesting than just looking at powerpoint slides and listening to her talk for the hour. She brings in all kinds of stuff to look at and use. Loved having her as my teacher.
By far the best professor I've ever had. Very clear, gives you the information you need on BB, in class, and also by email so if you miss something it's your own fault. Entire semester with each assignment viewable on BB, so very easy to work ahead. Always gets back to you quickly. 350 characters just isn't enough for all the good things to say.
PROFESSOR KAUTZ is phenomenal. She is one of the nicest people I've ever met and she's an incredible teacher. CIS 150 is a lot of online work. Kautz keeps you organized and helps you SO much. She is so knowledgable and will teach you valuable, real-life information. She is available pretty much 247 and responds SO quickly. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!
Helpful, but lectures are boring.
This prof has alot of real world experience that was shared with the class. It was also helpful to learn the actual code. We would often write it along with her which made lectures enjoyable. Provided helpful tips with assignments and a TON of extra resources in BB to help you. She does way more than the average prof. Highly recommend!
Very helpful! Provides assignment FAQs/tips in bb. When I need help outside of class she answers emails/ims almost immediately. Lectures sometimes consist of group activities which I liked the best. Also brought props to class such as computer parts to work with. Doesn't accept work late, but all the dates are in bb and she sends out reminders.
Professor Kautz is a great professor! I would highly recommend taking her. She is very understanding and helpful with assignments, will also being friendly and passionate about what she is teaching. She understands that some of the topics can be boring for students and tries to make them more interesting. She also gives extra credit which is nice.
Super easy class as long as you do your homework which is a lot. If you do your homework you will get an A! The exams you take are super easy. She did not really teach me much from her lectures. If you have knowledge on Microsoft word and excel before this class then it will be a breeze. She also gives out a boat load of extra credit.
Very helpful on assignments, provides good explanations, and help in bb too. If you want to learn more, she provides all kinds of great information on her website too. Lectures are relevant and useful. I can sometimes take what I learn in class and use it right away, like advice on how to make my laptop run faster and better. Would take again.
The class is alot of hard work but I learned a ton. Prof. Kautz goes out of her way to help students! Will meet almost anytime to work with you. Help in BB too with tips and lots of resources. Extremely organized, easy to find what you need in BB. She obviously loves the subject and that really makes the class even more enjoyable. Highly recommend!
This class was super easy! Lots of work but if you keep up with it you should have no problem.
Projects can be challenging, but she is very available and willing to help you. Stays longer after class, just have to ask. Responds to email almost 247. Lectures and the hugh amount of resources she provides in blackboard will help you to create a professional looking website completely from scratch. She knows her stuff and is a great professor!
Awesome teacher! There is a ton of work in this course, but she provides weekly to do lists in bb and has everything super organized to keep everyone on track. Sends out weekly reminders too and grades super fast! Love too that each week we do group activities and apply the knowledge in meaningful ways.
She was a really nice professor, extremely passionate about computers. There is a lot of work for the course and she recognizes that. It is an easy class if you do the work, which is time consuming but easy. Does random attendance.
She was an awesome professor. There is alot of homework but if you put the time into her homework then you'll get an easy A. The things she teaches are very useful to real life and other classes. She is very clear on grading so you know what she expects on every assignment. I would highly recommend her for any CIS class
She in really one of the best you can take for HTML/CSS. Really knows her stuff and teaches from experience. She makes herself virtually available so there is no reason not to do well. Some of her assignments were long, and some were several pages, but do the work and get an A. Final website really makes/breaks your grade.
Before taking this class, I never created a webpage before and had no idea how. Now I'm looking for internships in website development. Build sites from scratch with latest technologies. Almost an overwhelming amount of optional resources in bb for those that are more advanced, but keeps it basic enough for the rest of us. Highly recommend.
Prof Kautz is great. She is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to web-development and is great at answering your questions. The assignments were clear, but can be pretty time-consuming. Weekly quizzes and assignments; 1 midterm and 1 final exam. Would certainly take again.
CIS 150 can be a drag, but Professor Kautz makes this class run as smoothly as it possibly can. All materials you could need all semester are available on blackboard, she's very clear with instructions, and keeps everything very organized. She has immense knowledge in her field and is very pleasant to work with. Would definitely recommend.
We code two websites from scratch all semester and a team project too. My understanding and skills increased exponentially with each assignment. The rubrics and the videos that help with the assignments are great so you know how to do it. If you need help, Prof. Kautz responds almost immediately with bb chat or email. Great course!
I LOVE how consistent this course is. I applaud how much effort was put into lectures, assignments, and extra learning material. I knew what was due ahead of time and expectations were clearly disclosed. Also very prompt and to-the-point feedback. The rubric feedback made it easy to see where mistakes were made, and therefore easy to correct.
FAST at responding - emails back almost immediately. On Skype several hours a week for online help. VERY HELPFUL! Sends reminders so you don't forget something. Lots of video tutorials, homework help tips, and resources if you need extra help or want to learn more. Best course organization I've EVER seen in bb. 1st online class - LOVE it!
This is such a easy class, she is a very good teacher and I would take her again. The homework is straight forward and isn't a lot at all. This class is also very useful as you learn how to use excel, word, etc.
She makes what can otherwise be boring material fun. Many class activities that keep us engaged and covers material that's relevant and something you'll use like how to purchase and install additional RAM to upgrade your computer. We actually had the computer parts to try ourselves. Great class and highly recommend this prof.
Best prof I've had at GV. Learned more in this class than any I have had so far. Enjoyed going to class. Take this prof if you can.
She is great. Gives examples and demonstrates everything you need to know. Provides tips in bb for homework too. Tests are tough though. Youre given an Excel file to start with then have to show you know how to complete various tasks. But a study guide is provided in advance and if you use it you can do well. Also answers email almost immediately!
Never took an online class or created a website before, so was a little worried about taking this course. The practice assignment each week along with the video lectures explains everything perfectly. It was challenging to create the second weekly website from scratch, but I learned so much! The prof responds almost immediately if you need help.
Excel and VBA are not my strengths, but you can follow along in class with provided examples and demonstrations, which are useful for the weekly projects as you can refer back to the examples. Includes video tutorials and tips and FAQs in blackboard as well if you need more help. Stopped by her office often and she was always willing to help.
Great prof. Always so helpful and really cares. Highly recommend!
This was the most organized class I've ever seen in Blackboard. Grades were always kept up to date. Also like how it was taught. Each class we went over an example and then to lab which was a great way to help understand what we were learning.
She is always available outside class. Will even meet with you at the library on Sunday nights to help you. Her lecture videos are extremely organized and useful. Practice files are provided and you complete the chapters together with the videos, invaluable to help you be able to complete the projects. So glad I took the class with this prof.
Second online class Ive taken with this prof and both were incredibly organized and well done. Lectures arent bad at all. You follow along with the prof using an Excel file so you get hands-on practice. Ive learned so much in Excel and how to develop programs with VBA. Responds quick on email. Take this prof. You wont regret it.
One of the nicest and most helpful profs. Answers email almost immediately, even late at night. Very knowledgeable about computers. Especially helpful in the lab and working with the projects.
How does she have such amazing reviews? Her due dates are confusing, change frequently, and she is a very hard grader. Why are things randomly due throughout the week without notice? HINT: DO NOT TAKE AN ONLINE CLASS WITH THIS PROF.
This course is well organized. Homework is always due on Sundays. Due dates are clear, provided at the start of the semester (for the entire semester) in a pdf. The dates do not change. Due dates are posted in multiple locations so that they are easy to find. Notifications are sent from Blackboard too as reminders. There is 1 midterm, 1 final test.
Straight forward and easy to follow. Follow along with the lectures to complete the practice assignments and then do it on your own to show that you know how to write the code on your own. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. The course is incredibly well put together. Responds quick to email. Best online class I have taken.
Each week Prof Kautz video lectures would go through material step by step - at your own pace, repeat as much as you need and practice quizzes during the lectures (that you can repeat as much as you want) until you get it. If just used PowerPoints I would have struggled. More professors should teach classes with interactive learning such as this.
This class was so challenging for me as I'm not so good on computers. But it was in such a good way. I learned so much! She is always so quick at answering emails and so helpful.
This was the most challenging and rewarding class that I have been a part of. Prof Kautz made it a lot of fun and was very helpful when I had questions. Best class I've taken at GV.
Very nice and really knows her stuff. So fast at answering email and helpful. Blackboard is unbelievably organized and you know exactly what you need to do when. Great teacher.
The course is so perfectly set up, structured and planned out. The practice assignments and demos especially super beneficial. The lecture were amazing - realistic examples, straight to the point, and so organized. I learned things I never knew you could do in Excel and VBA. It was my first online class and grateful for the great experience!
Very helpful and quick at answering emails! Also friendly and makes learning about computers relevant and useful. For a computing class, I enjoyed it more then I thought I would.
After taking this class, creating websites is something I am now truly passionate about. Goes above and beyond to help you do well. Even helped me with a family business website outside of class which she did not have to do. So attentive and quick at answering emails. Would take this instructor again in a heartbeat.
I love prof kautz. Goes through each skill with you for practice while you follow along. Hands on is how I learn best. If you need a review, you can look at the recorded lectures. Lots of real, practical examples and about a month of writing VBA code. Only downside is I took a 3 hour Monday night class which gets long.
I loved professor Kautz. The blackboard site for this class was the most organized and user friendly blackboard site I have ever seen. If you forget how to do a certain skill, you can rewatch the video lectures that she records on blackboard! She is very kind and approachable. The only downside was that the project was kind of annoying. TAKE HER
Straight forward and well organized course. Best online course I've taken at GV. Instructions are clear and quick at getting back to you if have questions, sometimes within minutes! Learned a lot and highly recommend!
Awesome prof! Thorough, engaging, helpful. Really enjoys what she teaches which makes learning the material more fun. Her office hours don't work with my schedule, so she has offered to stay and work with me after class. So much appreciated. Haven't had a better experience with anyone anywhere else.
one of the best professors i've had. has very clear instructions & layout for the whole class and clearly knows her stuff. she has a ton of extra resources for you including videos of the lectures and cares a lot about the class. learned a lot and would absolutely take her again.
Loved this class and prof kautz. She was so amazing and so helpful. Always so kind and willing to help. Covered everything in incredible detail and provides her videos you can use to review too. Only downside is she is a Packer fan.
The way this course was taught really helped me. 2 assignments a week. The first you practice with her by following along with the videos. The second you have to do on your own. A few online discussions that make you think and explain what you learned, weekly quizzes, etc. Already using what I learned at my internship. FAST at answering email!
Sets clear objectives each week so that you know what you're expected to learn. Straight forward with weekly assignments, quizzes, discussions. Also weekly practice assignment that you complete by following with the instructor's videos. Quick at responding to email, grading work, and sends reminders often. Caring and helpful and highly recommend!
She is an awesome professor! Easy to follow the course schedule and know exactly what is expected. I learned and did things I never thought I would, like coding! I recommend this class as it's much better than taking a math course.
I went from HARDLY being able to use Excel to now feeling extremely comfortable with even its more complex functions. I learned to do lots of things I can use at work in the future such as writing VBA code to develop applications and user forms. The professor-made videos were fantastic for learning. How available, willing she was to help was hugh!
Professor Kautz is amazing! She is always so willing to help you in any way that she can. There is usually an in class assignment due but as long as you come to class and try, you will pass. She makes Computer Science exciting and relatable with the times. Definitely would recommend!!
Always available to help! Has virtual office hours so that you can see and talk to each other or you can call too. If you want to take a course all online, I recommend this one highly. Most organized and professionally put together course I have ever seen. Grades fast too and has excellent and helpful feedback.
WAYYYYY TOOO MUCH WORK!!! By the amount of work and time you have to put into this class, it feels like she thinks her class is the only one your taking. She has very strict deadlines of midnight with absolutely no exceptions or any chances to earn back points later. I'm a pretty chill person but I literally created this account to let y'all know.
Very helpful when you come to her office hours, which are several times a week virtually. Sends out multiple reminders each week inviting you to stop in. There are 2 assignments a week, 1 on Wed and 1 on the weekend. If it wasn't spreadout I would probably otherwise just try to do everything at the last minute, so works well for me. Learned alot.
It is AMAZING to develop websites for mobile phones using only Notepad. I learned so much and plan to continue web development with CIS 371. This is also the most organized and easy to follow online course I have ever seen. Glad I took this class!
I went into this course knowing nothing about coding or the process that was involved as a whole. And the instructor did a fantastic job of introducing the subject and all that was involved in the course. Highly recommend.
In the beginning of the semester, the class was pretty hard and had a sharp learning curve, but I think that was because I'm a writing major, so i don't know much about computers or technology. However, what I learned in the class was very helpful and useful. I plan on creating my own website to possibly sell art.
This class is very well done, it always sticks to the same schedule which is helpful and we can work ahead. Practice assignments to accompany the prof's video lectures really enforced the skills and ideas. I was able to recollect techniques during the Grader Projects without having to refer back to videos/notes which was proof of retainment.
Terrible at showing mac users alternate ways to complete tasks. Does not grade her students work (lets a program do it). This program will mark you wrong for even one incorrect letter. When she teaches code you have to copy it perfectly. Which is fine except the video she gives you to copy is the worst quality ive ever seen. You cannot read it.
The class is designed to watch lecture videos and complete a practice assignment. Then you complete assignments on your own. There is no interaction with the prof unless you reach out, and she was fast to email. Quizzes and tests were all open note. The class can be a little challenging if you don't know VBA, but easy to do well and good prof
The clarity, predictability, and structure of the online course was awesome. Most professors were a disaster at administering online classes. This was perfect. Everything was so clear and detailed. I knew exactly what was expected of me and when. Made me feel a lot less anxious.
I learned a lot about web design, writing HTML and CSS. I really enjoyed having two assignments each week with one being a step by step follow of the assignment and then the next assignment you take what you learned from the first one and apply it on your own from scratch. Would recommend the class!
I learned a lot in this course about web programming and I would say it was one of the most simulating courses Ive taking in college. I liked the video lectures, especially when theyre linked in the assignment right where Id need it. Good course and would recommend.
Best and most organized online class I have ever taken at GV. Practice assignments following along with the prof's lectures and then apply the skills with a second assignment each week worked perfectly for me. FAST at answering emails, almost immediately sometimes. Would definitely recommend!
Easily the best online course I have taken at GV. The weeks expectations are very clear, and typically consists of 1 practice assignment (work thru it when watching videos), 1 grader project, and 1 BB quiz. Super easy course if you watch the videos, and do the work. Super responsive, and helpful if you ever need assistance. No complaints whatsoever
Wish I had Prof Kautz for all my classes. One of the best teachers I've ever had in college-hands down! I'm not that good with computers and have no experience in webdesign but was still able to learn how to create an entire website from scratch using only NotePad++. She is so helpful and encouraging. Take her!
Prof. Kautz was very clear with her grading and was very helpful via email. Would take her again.
Kautz assigns an excessive amount of work per week. Expect to devote your semester to this course. Available outside class but does not show much respect in communication (blunt, doesn't want to help you understand, etc.). Expectations for each week are all listed on blackboard but become more extensive and less clear as the semester progresses.
One of the best classes I've take so far in my 3 years at GV! Course is well organized and easy to follow. Always willing to help and available virtually and in person for help outside of class. Would recommend class!
The fact that we started from scratch with everything using a plain text editor was crucial to my success. The practice assignments were amazing when it came to learning how to do things, and Professor Kautz's enthusiasm and willingness to help students goes unparalleled. This is a good course that I would definitely recommend to others.
Professor Kautz was the biggest reasons I enjoyed this course. She was always very helpful and her enthusiasm helped so much. The projects were fun and engaging, especially learning programming and concepts. Some things I thought would be confusing weren't at all. I told all my friends to take this course. It's alot better than a Stats class.
Overall Cheryl is a nice professor! The workload is pretty high but it's not difficult, just time-consuming. The Saturday due dates drove me up the wall but I understood why she did them. The group project was kind of difficult and could have had some more clear guidelines but overall an ok class.
Tons of instruction and different resources make it so easy to follow and learn. The videos would help me through the work at first and then the homework would give me a chance to try it myself. Also always willing to help when needed and FAST at replying to emails.
I had to allow myself to take a couple 0s on assignments because the directions made no sense and the professor was horrible at helping (I NEVER do that) not to mention she doesnt even grade anything herself. I made it through the class but very thankful it was only a 6 week course.
Lots of homework, but it was a summer class and completed the same amount of work as a full semester but in only 6 weeks. Very organized course with lots of resources available to help with projects (tip sheets). Fast and helpful at responding to my questions with email (sometimes 5 or 6 times a day). Also was available almost any time with Zoom.
Explains, demonstrates, then we practice while following along. Do it again on our own with a second assignment due later in the week. Has a multitude of her videos available to review skills, if needed. There was so much quality content and how well it was organized and the way the professor taught it was better than any GV prof I've had so far.
She's a good professor and has a ton of office hours. Class is super useful and has helped me a lot
Extremely well put together and organized. Incredibly useful content that I was able to use in other courses and even for my own interests. Videos are especially well done and helpful. Only complaint are quizzes. All sections and all teachers only allow 10 minutes. I feel too rushed. Otherwise, the course was executed perfectly by prof Kautz.
Loved this class and how it made the code behind the websites understandable and how it works. Really made me think as had to use what I learned to create my own website from scratch every week. Many useful topics that I will definitely use in my future. Listen and participate in the lectures and you will do well.
Super helpful weekly practice assignments to learn the skills and then apply the skills from scratch with a weekly project and a team project. It was alot of fun to code a website from scratch. I learned so much. Highly recommend!
Hard course but mainly because I took it during the summer. BUT her course was incredibly well organized and easy to follow. Weekly expectations and learning goals were crystal clear. Always available to help and meet in Zoom. Constant email reminders and offers to help. Grades were updated daily. I wish I could have this prof for all my classes.
Prepare to dedicate your semester to this class; insane amounts of work that will kill your grade if you miss anything. Attendance is mandatory but EVERYTHING is on Blackboard. Frequently struggled to find any motivation to attend with the online structure. Lots of time in-class to finish work. Prof comes off as cold and condescending to students.
Instruction was clear and with information on computers and programming I found the class to be pretty interesting. I enjoyed the group programming and building an application from scratch and applying our knowledge. Professor Kautz was always very helpful. If you attend class, you will do well.
The blackboard course site was very organized, due dates were clear, instruction was performed very well, and Professor Kautz was always very quick to reply to every email with help, advice, or to set up a Zoom meeting. Glad I took this instructor for the class.
1 practice assignment, 1 grader project and 1 quiz each week, as the semester went on sometimes there were more. Quizzes were either a hit or miss, you have 10 mins to complete them. 3 exams total, lectures are great, easy to follow along. She responds to emails quick.
She doesn't give any chance to earn the points back you lost, says "you should've compared your work to the rubric before submitting", it doesn't help that Blackboard has a terrible UI, but she does write exactly what to do. 2 assignments and 1 quiz a week and these build on top of each other. Other than her strict grading it was an okay class
Have to agree with the last post, being able to resubmit for even half credit could help people that are really struggling with coding. But overall, this prof has been one of the best in the computer science department I've had a class with. The rubric can be extensive though, so it pays to really pay attention and triple check that.
My main frustration is there's a weeks long group project near the middle of the semester, for an online class... There really should not be a group project to make a website in an online class like this, it's worth like 15% of your grade.
I gotta agree, theres a group website project in the middle of the semester and communication is really poor with online group work. Be sure to follow the rubric to the tee so you can get as high of a grade as possible because she marks down anything missing on the rubric. Class isnt hard, it's just easy to overlook the rubric compared to your work
1) Her video tutorials were extremely helpful and good examples for how she used in real life. Practice with the professor then complete the same skills on my own to reinforce what I was learning. 2) She does an amazing job with organization in Blackboard and clear class layout. 3) Answers emails almost immediately with helpful explanations.
Cheryl is a knowledgeable teacher with a very well prepared course, but she has a lot of issues. She is very condescending when she tries to explain things and she acts like she does not want to help you. She has no rubric on most of her assignments so she will often grade them a 0 if you missed one part to it.
Professor Kautz did an amazing job! Very patient and understands we have no experience in what we were learning. She consistently reminds you that you must attend class to succeed. Almost everything is done during class time. As long as you show up for class, it is easy to do well.
Only a month into the course and already learned so much! I've never written code before and learning java script is a completely new, creative, and challenging experience! Super nice and helpful! I thought programming would be a lot more intimidating but its not. Almost everything is done during class, so must attend to do well. So far, so good!
Professor Kautz is amazing! You can tell she is passionate about web design, loves what she teaches, and super smart! She explains the code while you practice along. Then, write the code on your own. By the end of the class we created a professional looking mobile web app with html, css and java script that scales for larger screens.
The professor went above and beyond to provide instructional videos, help, and PDF files that showed what the excel files should look like when finished. Her effort and thorough explanation of the practice assignments helped a lot. The exams were extremely challenging, but if you review the lecture videos to prepare, you'll do well.
Clear expectations. There are many assignments to reinforce lessons. Material on exams are clearly stated in study guide.
Professor Kautz's CIS231 class was extremely well-organized, with clear expectations and helpful video tutorials. The weekly assignments and quizzes challenged me, but unstuck study made study prep a breeze. Overall, a great learning experience.
Absolutely the best professor I've had at GVSU. She's incredibly detailed and organized. You'll learn everything needed to build a website from scratch using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Her clear teaching style makes complex topics easy to understand. I wish she taught more classes in my major!
Be prepared to attend every class for very little actual benefit. There's a ton of in class busywork (could be done at home w/o the lecture) and attendance is 100% mandatory (no real policy just mandatory). Do not take her if you don't like being talked down to about basic computer or microsoft concepts as that was my main problem.
I enjoyed learning how to code, problem solve and use Excel to analyze data. Everything was new to me. The class isn't difficult if you stay engaged. Most work was done in class, so homework was minimal. Just show up, do the work, and use the help available if you need it.
I loved how organized the Blackboard was!! It was easy to track where we were and where our assignments were. I also liked how homework was consistent with turn-in dates. The lectures where super helpful as well, along with helpful office hours, and the homework was actually useful.
The accessibility skills we learned to ensure all users including those with disabilities can access ADA compliant web content were impressive. I am already using these skills at work. The clear lessons and hands on coding made the class excellent. I highly recommend Professor Kautz.
This class was super easy. She gives you the material to do well in the class. Would recommend this class.
Professor Kautz was amazing! Blackboard was so organized, easy to find things, and so many helpful resources. Her video lectures were also well organized (by skill so you could easily only watch or review what you needed extra help on). She included many relevant real life applications for the functions we used. Wish I could have for all classes!
