She is the head of the English Dept. She is very confusing and she bounces from topic to topic. I had her for 3 hours and she never let us out early - she once made us listen to NPR for 40 mins! Do NOT take her!
shes a little crazy and very energetic, and REFUSES to let you out even 30 seconds before class is over. you have to read all of these boring articles too, so be prepared to do 3 hours of useless busy work, it was rough sometimes. but she was a nice lady
She is a classic, liberal, hummanities professor. Teaches business writing, but has no idea how business works. Talks to you like your in high school. Way too much busy work for college course, something is due every tuesday. Learn next to nothing, If I could do it over I would avoid this class.
In four years, she's the best teacher I had. Interesting, energetic, fast paced, engaging. She can teach you alot about the real world of business if you really want to learn. I'd take any course taught by her. I looked forward to class.
She is wacky and liberal and opinionated but her class was okay. I am pretty sure I would not take another class by her again...but, I sure would choose her over other crazy English professors. She never lets you out early and assigns a lot of annoying busy work. She is a tough grader but if you go to her she is helpful. The final report is B.S.
really bad attitude.i can't figure how she got to be head of the english dept., i guess nobody else wanted it.lets rules get in the way of teaching.everything she does is by the book, that to me indicates a lack of maturity and experience.you'll pass if you get over being trated like a little kid.
never take her for eng 368 there are many other professors that teach the class that are much better
real bad attitude, some guy must have done her wrong and she brings it to class every day.tough marker with no sense of humor.from the 2nd week on,you'll be an unhappy camper.it's not worth it,take someone else.
She makes you work really hard, but I respect her because she has high expectations for her students. Anyone who says she isn't funny just doesn't have a sense of humor. She knows her stuff and puts a lot of time into giving students feedback on their writing.
She had never taught this class before and you could tell. Very nice , but workload was insane. Pop quizzes sucked because it wasnt that you were lazy and didnt read, you could not keep up andyou were punished for that. Gave a ton of feedbackon papers. Overall i would pick a different class and different teacher!
Her class is no cakewalk, but she knows all there is to know on the subject and is happily willing to share that knowledge. You'll leave her class knowing 100x more on the topic than you ever thought you could.
I'm going to be honest, she really isn't THAT bad...and TRUST ME...i live on campus and party 4 times out of the week, but thats besides the point. She does take attendance but if you let her know you have something to tend to she takes it into consideration, I definately wouldn't say shes cocky...more like spunky...shes got a little spark to her..
She's a tough teacher, and expects a lot from her students. She's really interestig and very intelligent. If you are a slacker, don't take this class, but if you want to learn, go for it. She also gives you a lot of feedback o papers
While her passion for literature is evident, her passion for her students is lacking. Her methods of teaching are top notch, and you will learn a lot, but this class is not an easy A. She loves reading and expects you too as well (quizzes and she calls on you). Don't take her unless you like a challenge.
She does know what she is talking about. The texts? Pretty boring. She had us keep a seperate notebook where we wrote prompts in and she would collect and grade them. Her workload can be insane and her mid term and final were harder than anything even though they were open note and book. I wouldn't take her again, but she's not the worst I have had
Forget these other reviews, Wanko is great. She loves what she does and this makes attending class a joy, and people complaining about amount and subject of reading: she teaches LITERATURE and you're in COLLEGE. Think maybe you'll be reading a lot? Should be obvious, but apparently it isn't. Grow up. Highly, highly recommended.
I thought she was great! very entergetic, and loves discussion! Lots of writing and reading, but it is an English class! She will never cancel class, or let you out early! But just keep up with the work, read, and PARTICIPATE in class!
Hardest teacher I've had at WCU. She gives a ton of reading and writing. Her midterm and final are impossible.... Don't take her. She never cancels class or lets you out early (she practically keeps you five minutes after). If you don't know 100% what shes talking about she will make you feel stupid.
The worst teacher in the history of worst teachers! She makes you feel incredibly stupid, won't help you if you need it and is basically a heartless women. She def knows what she is talking about and what she is doing but she, as a human being, is terrible. Good Luck with her.
Dr. Wanko is an excellent professor who truly cares about what she teaches. She does grade pretty harshly, but my writing has improved thanks to her feedback. The workload is intense, but it IS a college-level English class. Keep up with the reading, raise your hand once in a while, put effort into your assignments, and you'll be fine with Dr. W.
She's nuts. I think she believes it to be 1700- she's obsessed with all things 18th century (not passionate, crazy obsessed). The work never ends and I agree with whoever said she was heartless. She has no regard for the fact that we have other classes and expects us to love this crap as much as she does... otherwise you pay!
Tough and demanding, and sets a high bench mark. If you want average give her miss, if you want to excel then she points you in the right direction
Dr. Wanko is a wonderful person. Her personality really shines when she speak about material she loves. Her feedback on papers is very helpful. Make sure to attend and read so you can talk talk talk, she loves discussion. My writing definately improved because of her class.
If you're looking for an easy professor, look elsewhere. If you're actually interested in learning the material - and this goes doubly for English majors - Dr. Wanko is fascinating and instructive. She has a great sense of humor, zero tolerance for childishness, and she *will* improve your writing.
A day did not go by that Dr. Wanko made me bust out laughing in class. She is so funny! But she is also an amazing teacher. She really wants her students to become amazing writers. Her grading is a bit harsh but overall, class discussions are also enjoyable and fulfilling.
She is unclear about every assignment and you never know what she is looking for. She is a tough grader and the assignments all overlap. Avoid her if possible
She's a funny teacher, but she gives way too many assignments. At one point in the class, we were working on 3 different assignments. It was a little overwhelming. She does try her best to make the class interesting. Not impossible to pull off a high grade.
I actually took 3 courses taught by her. I thought her to be incredibly interesting, very well versed in her speciality, and with boundless energy. One of my favorite professors ever. I took electives that she taught just because I enjoued her classes. As for her grading, I did quite well on some exams but always, she was always fair.
Cheryl Wanko is wacky, but incredibly funny and enlightening. She tried to make the class relate to the world we live in and chose interesting materials for us to talk about in class (radio shows, documentaries, etc). I would definitely recommend her and hope I get the chance to take her again.
She was alright...definitely knows the material and background info to all of the authors and texts. my best advice is go to class (she will deduct if you go over the limit no matter what the excuse) and you 100% need the textbook. she will call on you at least 1 time each class so take advantage of when u know the answer and raise your hand.
Every student saying Dr. Wanko is evil must not really be invested in learning and took her looking for a bull GPA booster. Dr. Wanko is AMAZING and cares very much about the material she teaches and the students who take her classes seriously. I learned so much from the classes I've taken with her. She's a riot to talk to outside of class too.
Cheryl Wanko is just a delight to be around. She is so upbeat and friendly, and she is one of those people who has the ability to make your day better just by talking to her for two minutes. She is hilarious in class and really cares about her students. She makes it so easy to be an engaged and passionate.
Couldn't really get a read on her. I always did well on her papers, but most of the class could expect C's and B's. She is pretty laid back, kind of a hippie, but makes class interesting for the most part. Would take again if presented the opportunity
Do not let Wanko's eccentric personality put you off. Wanko is an experienced prof who loves English. As an English major I learned so much. Wanko is a tough grader, especially on papers but she provides detailed feedback so that you understand how to improve. Don't hesitate to visit Wanko in her office hours, she is willing to clarify assignments.
She's a nice person I guess, but she gives about 3 assignments at once which is confusing. The whole class is confusing honestly. She isn't clear on what she expects from you. She doesn't make the class interesting at all. Definitely avoid her.
I took this class for a Gen Ed requirement expecting it to be a breeze since writing comes pretty easy to me. Wanko is the hardest grader i've ever had. As a computer science major with A's and B's in every math and science course, I never would have thought i'd have to retake a WRT course. The assignments are never clear, don't recommend.
She is a very tough grader, she will give a lot of assignments at once and is not very specific in class. Lectures don't have that much to do with what we cover which made me not want to go but attendance counts. I wouldn't recommend this class.
This class was a gen ed requirement and i got a B- in this class she is a very hard grader. During class she talks about something different then what we are writing about. Tries to be funny. Go to class attendance counts don't show up late that counts. Would not take any of her classes again.
I took this class as a gen ed and I thought it would be an easy A but no. She is such a tough grader and I would neverrr take one of her classes again. She gets very off topic. Gives multiple assignments at once. Go to class she dropped my grade a whole letter grade for missing a couple classes.
Sure Wanko makes you work, but she knows her stuff and cares about helping students improve. I learned alot and really appreciated how much passion she put into the course.
If you're not willing to work, you won't do well--which is generally how the world works. Wanko expects you to do your best, and she knows if you don't.
I ended with an ok grade but I would not suggest this class to anyone. Wanko means well, but her class is a mess. She is a tough grader, not in a practical way. Even if you received full credit for an assignment, you get a 95. 100's do not exist in this class. I do not suggest this class for those want A's.
Wanko is not a terrible lady but she is the most confusing professor Ive ever had by far. Her directions are never clear and the work she gives is stupid and if you email her asking her a question, she will not give you an answer but rather make you feel stupid for it. She has acted unprofessional in certain ways and i would not take her classes.
Wanko gives so many projects and none of them ever make any sense. She is very unclear with her directions and not helpful when you ask questions. I leave each lecture more confused than i was before, and she forced an entire project into the last week of classes. Wanted a simple writing class, instead Im making dumb websites. Wouldnt recommend.
I would have rated Wanko a 0 if I could. I believe that all of the good rates on here of her are her fake accounts. There's no way a student thought she was a good professor. Her assignment makes 0 sense, she's terrible at explaining them, her feedback is not helpful, she also nitpicks at your grade in an attempt to drop your grade. Stay away
WANKO IS AWFUL DO NOT TAKE HER FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER!! Trust me on this one, the positive reviews must be from her because theres no way anyone thinks she is a good professor. Her rating should be a 0/5. So confusing and rude and will never help you if you have a question. Stay away!!!!
Basically the schoolwork is excessive and too much. The amount of work that was completely unnecessary. Fortunately I had her for first year experience and not for more important class. Out of all my classes I had the most homework in her's, which made no sense. I had other more crucial classes like philosophy, etc. She completely monopolized time.
Adding to the point below, out of all my classes I took I only received one C on my grade-book, the rest were high B's or A's. Basically taking her class, you need to prepare for a lot of unnecessary work. I didn't do bad in the class because I didn't turn in assignments, it was because she graded the assignments like english instead of first year.
I enjoyed taking Dr. Wanko's class. She is certainly not an "easy A", but no graduate course should be. She provides great feedback, literally a page worth + notes. You will learn a lot from her. She has a corky personality and makes me laugh out loud. Like I said, she's tough but certainly worth it.
Wanko's lectures are boring and she gets mad if she can tell you aren't interested she assigns so many homework assignments as well as other things and nothing she assigns is clear nor does it make sense if you can avoid her, makes easy classes difficult
Wanko is probably one of the worst writing professors I have had in my life. She once spent 15 minutes talking about the difference between there, their and they're. Which is something that a writing 220 class should already know. She's rude when you ask questions and her projects and assignments are confusing. Her class isn't worth going to.
Professor Wanko means well, she is a very nice lady. She tried her best to be funny and make the class welcoming. But, she never helps if you have group problems, she also makes you do A TON of research and busy work before writing projects. She doesnt give that much homework, its normal essay work. But I would not recommend taking her
VERY TOUGH GRADER
She does not teach and expects you to know everything. Its impossible to get an a on any essays. Do not take her.
Dr. Wanko really enjoys what she teaches and if you genuinely enjoy writing classes this is the class for you. However, the class itself is full of meaningless busy work and the grading curriculum could be better. Overall, do not take it as a gen ed it's not worth it but if you love writing and rhetorical situations take it at your own risk
Easily the worst teacher I have ever had. Nothing is ever good enough for Wanko. You can meet with her multiple times in office hours discussing your essays and leave the meeting feeling confident that you're on the right track then only to receive a grade saying you failed to add multiple key components to the essay. when they weren't in the promt
Wow I hate Wanko. Never thought I'd hate a professor like this. She's awful, doesn't care about her students at all and grades terribly. I'm good at writing and somehow got a D in this class simply because of my attendance. All of the ratings saying she's amazing is probably her trying to get her rating up because NO ONE likes her. don't take.
Shes a very energetic person, if you match her energy level youll love her, if you dont youll think shes the worst. Overall, she is ok; she gives good feedback on your papers and is lenient if you talk to her but she can be very rude at times.
Dr. Wanko's teaching style can be best described as incoherent and out of touch. She treats her adult students with the jaded attitude and distrust of someone who's taught 6th graders for the past 20 years. If you have any kind of learning disability, this is your sign to stay FAR away from this professor and her kelp obsession.
I did not dislike professor wanko she was very nice however can be hard to hear her voice for so long. You will get used to it. she never gave out tests we just did projects and group projects. she loves sustainability and nature so prepare to hear a lot about it. it was an easy class but a lot of writing so be ready for that
Wanko is the worst professor I have ever had during my time at West Chester. She is so unclear with instructions and dances around questions instead of directly answering them. She over-explains projects to the point of confusion. If you miss more than 3 classes, even with a Doctor's note (she doesn't take them), you lose a THIRD of your grade.
Please don't take her sustainable writing class. It is absolutely absurd how bad of an experience this has been for me. Cant miss more than 3 classes or a 3rd of your grade is deducted. All she talks about is her politics about sustainability, not paying to hear about that. She is difficult to speak with, im confused about 99.9% of the time.
Rude. Incapable of understanding that college students sometimes are absent. Longest hour and 15 minutes of your life. Don't take. Obsessed with kelp. Talks down to her students like they are 5 but cant explain a project for sh*t. Good luck if you take this class!
Basically, if you attend class and do the work, you'll be fine, and you'll learn a lot about writing. I was able to improve some of the ways I go about writing papers and practice real-world writing. The work is spaced out so that there's not a lot going on at once. She's got a good sense of humor and will respect you if you respect the class.
Wanko will never answer your question. What she thinks goes. She does not view her students as human beings. She cares about nothing you say. Not clear when giving directions and if you ask someone around you she butts in because she is so nosey. Extremely hostile and talks down to students. SAVE YOURSELF THE STRESS AND ANXIETY.
Dear Cheryl, writing your own reviews on here to better your rating won't change the fact many students have already contacted the dean about you. Quite literally the most outrageous teacher I have ever had to deal with. And thats an understatement. Lets you miss class for covid but not a family emergency. Get the picture yet?
Pushes her political views. Dances around important questions. You'd think after paying thousands West Chester wouldn't employ a professor that basically preys on her students' downfalls. You can do your best work the entire semester but if you miss more than 2-3 classes you are fighting for your life to pass. Nosy, disrespectful, insensitive.
FIRST AND FOREMOST SHE IS HORRIBLE OKAY LIKE THE CLASS IS A WASTE OF SPACE. IF YOU LOVE YOURSELF AND YOUR MENTAL BY ALL MEANS DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. if you do all the work and get an overall grade of A you will still fail if you have 5-6 absences, your granted a C or D fassure.
and to be continued .. Wtf is even the point of this class? to teach you how to come to class and listen to a lady talk for not an hour but an hour and 15minutes. Like save yourself, your time, and your sanity. NEVRR TF AGAIN
Although Dr. Wanko is an attentive and caring professor, she will harp on minute assignment details that leave you baffled. She seems to have an unwavering fixation on rigid rules and specific things. For example, you will get docked for GOING OVER paper limits, for example. Just weird things that would keep me from taking another class.
I have mixed feelings about Dr. Wanko. Some of the projects weren't explained well and feel kind of pointless but I liked her over approach to writing and liked hearing about sustainability issues - she's crazy knowledgable on both. I feel like the only way to really succeed in this class is participate and talk a lot during class time.
Came back to read about what other students thought of Wanko a year after taking her. Glad everyone is seeing her for who is really is. One time in class last year (WRT220) she said we couldn't go to the bathroom/leave the room-- Are we 5 years old? Last time I checked we are adults. This lady needs to be fired immediately.
I have confusing feelings about her, shes energetic, and a decent teacher, but she is horrible at explaining, and class time is pointless. She grades very hard so watch out for that. Make sure you show up to class or you will fail, participation matters.
Great professor who truly cares about students. She gave the opportunity to the entire class to redo an assignment for a better grade due to poor performance. Some of her ideas were obscure, however she tied it into what we were learning. She made sure to allow students to have their own opinions and was considerate of everyone. Overall great prof.
0 lenience when it comes to grading and attendance. The class teaches you nothing, you only receive busy work and class time is wasted going over slides that will never be used. If you have the option to take another class, do it.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES!!! She has triggered students with harmful content whether verbally or visually of videos that were "funny" but were actually banned in some cases. She has a trigger warning in the syllabus but does not apply it to each case and why except for the Dave Chapelle show. She's never clear about group projects & any assignments.
This was the most pointless class. In all the projects you have to find a video or article and instead of writing about the topic of the media you write essays about why is is reliable or how it was persuasive. Everything we learned in this class was things I learned in middle school. And Dr. Wanko is unbearably annoying and such a picky grader
Worst professor. She forces her beliefs on everyone in the class. Every class she rambles on for an hour and you have to listen to her talk about nothing because attendance is mandatory. The worst part is you learn nothing in the class but she is a brutal grader on especially everything she is supposed to be teaching. I had to force myself to go
DO NOT TAKE HER. She has bad reviews for a reason and they are all true. She is NEVER clear about directions, TALKS DOWN TO THE STUDENTS, and I also learned nothing cause all she does is ramble. This class could have been good if another professor taught it. Also, don't buy any books they are all online. Good Luck :)
Absolutely Awful Teacher. She does not work with students who miss class due to illness. Talks disrespectfully to her students, is rude in email replies, rambles on about nothing all class, and expects us to fully pay attention because she views herself as better. Attendance is mandatory and no electronics Never had a worse teacher in my life.
Wanko is probably the toughest grader ever. No matter what answer you give, she always finds a way to contradict it and make you sound like you are wrong and have no idea what you are talking about. I've never felt so discouraged by a professor before. Attendance and participation matter and will hurt your grade if you don't go/do the work
she was not compassionate for sickness or tough times. will send rude emails if ur on ur phone during class. whatever she goes on and on about during lecture doesnt make sense. directions unclear
Do not take her! She doesn't explain assignments/essays and you are so lost the whole course. She won't answer any questions and will be offended that you asked even though she never fully explained it. She doesn't give rubrics until due dates are days away, so you scramble to fit the requirements. She'll take points off and not explain why.
arent allowed to use our computers unless she says we can which is extremely frustrating bc lots of students use computers to take notes.d2l page is confusing and being able to follow along on my mac would make things easier instead of trying to figure out the maze where her assignements are posted. she just rambles on and on would not reccomend
She is the worst professor I have ever had. Should be fired, she can not teach. Gives so many assignments that aren't necessary.
She was a fun and interesting teacher. She prompts for paper was confusing and hard to understand. She does have office hours and she is helpful during that time. She is a little whacky at times and she does run around the room like a mad women at times. She is such a tough grader and never has clear instructions.
Dropped after the first class. Unbeknownst to us, she changed the title, updated the syllabus, and themed the class from "Topics in Literature" to "Environmentalism & Literature". Talked more about her own political opinions than any actual literature; got the vibe that she won't grade fairly if you aren't as extremist and woke as her.
Do not take this class her grading does not make sense and you have not a lot of time for big projects
Genuinely the worst professor I've ever had. She rudely responds to emails or will not respond if they are not properly formatted, is an extremely tough grader, and fails to properly convey what is expected from the student.
In Lit 165 she is not the bad teacher some make her out to be, she wants to help if needed and wants people to do well. Makes it worth going so when you get assigned groups for a film project she picks groups based on attendance
I ended up with an A, but I would not recommend this professor to anyone. She was incredibly rude and uninformative in emails and an extremely tough grader. She will also randomly call on you in class and then get mad if you don't know the answer. She hates when people are on their phones and will publicly call you out. Do. Not. Take.
You will get called on to read and answer questions during class. Gives a lot of reading to do before class.
No good, very very bad. Get ready to read a lot and if you dont answer questions you get shamed. Dr. Gupta would never treat someone like this.
Very Very bad. She is crazy. Tries to push political agenda on you. She expects you to read a 400 page book in 5 days. She also gives you tons of readings she expects you to know the ins and outs of. She is a nice lady just the class is horrible. Also everything you write is on paper and pencil no online essays.
Very hard grader, takes points off for not participating in class. If you don't know the answer to something she assumes you didn't read the texts. Made us read a decent sized book like 400 ish pages in a couple days just to not talk about it. Overall worse than any high school teacher i've had. If you have her drop the class its not worth it
Dr. Wanko only talks about the environment the whole semester. Most of the readings were short and not difficult, but there are two lengthy books that you have to read in about one-two weeks each. All assignments are on paper which can be rough for essays, but she usually grades quickly. Her grading system is weird and her rubrics are never clear.
Extremely boring class. The rubric for assignments makes no sense. Way too political. Will talk your ear off about the environment. Inconsistent participation grades. Group projects are long and tedious. DO NOT TAKE.
assigns and expects way too much and is a very tough grader. rubrics are terrible, make no sense, and are like none i've ever seen. very rude in emails. hard to cooperate with and feels like she cares more about being right then about helping out her students who are struggling. terrible professor.
