Excellent Teacher. Very positive attitude and wants students to succeed. He is old but still sharp as a tack.
Incredibly boring and completely unhelpful. In lecture he talks to the chalkboard and when he visited my discussion section, he started talking about chickens instead of answering my question!
I liked professor Miracle. He really was somewhat dry, but he definately taught the math. The class isn't that hard, but there are huge amounts of homework. However, if you do it all, you end up learning the material well and succeeding on the exams.
Very good professor. While he is old and a bit out of touch with students, he definitley teaches very well and if you go to lecture, they homework questions are similar if not the same to the example problems he does.
Good Class. The tests never had any big surprises and his review sheets were awesome.
i would take a bullet for chester. by FAR the best math professor i've ever had.
This guy is awesome. If you have a chance to take a class with him, do it. He reminds me of the KFC Colonal. He has the white hair and southern drawl, plus he has a cool dry sense of humor. Take his class, peace.
Miracle is awesome! I would take another class with him as the professor in a heartbeat! He explains all the material on the homework and exams, is very willing to help and throws some good humor in while he does it. Also he isn't on a power/pride trip so you don't have to worry about trick questio
He's red hot like a fire cracker.
Best math teacher I've ever had. Definatly take his class if given an option.
Prof Miracle is a great teacher. His lectures are clear and his examples are relevant. He was one of the reasons I decided to become a HS math teacher. I strongly recommend Prof Miracle.
He is old and stutters a bit, but does he know how to teach math. If you go to lecture, you will get an A. He explains everything step by step, in detail. Lecture can get boring at times, but you learn a lot. I would definately take a class with him again.
Man this guy is 100% man meat
This professor is the bomb. He really knows how to structure his lectures and discussions such that what he teaches will be thoroughly reinforced. He is also not on a power trip. Hence the test questions closely reflect the homework and discussion questions.
Chester is seriously the most awesome prof out there! He knows what he is talking about and he knows how to teach. He gives you the feeling that he genuinely wants to help you. If you are ever given the chance to take a class with him, do it. You won't find a better prof out there!
Chester Miracle likes the word "y'know" a bit much, but he's by far the best math teacher/professor I've had. He has a sense of humor, so that's always a plus (especially after having a calc prof who'd try to humiliate in-lecture sleepers and hardly teach).
Good teacher with a dry, old person sense of humor. Some of the lectures are quite dry, but he teaches the material well. Definately one of the best math lecturers i have had thus far.
solid professor. a little old school and a little bit southern, but he's cool.
Excellent lecturer.
a sexy **** with a smile that could tke thre breath away from some people
freakin' awesome
Very good teacher, writes his own books and the homework is a lot harder than the tests, which makes for easier tests. He uses same exams/homework from previous semesters (ie if you know someone who took this class before you, you should look at their work).
I love Chester!!! okay, so he loses negatives and sometimes rights down the wrong thing... but he's such a sweet old man, and his books do a really good job of explainig things. Heck, I go to his lecture even though technically I have Cocos. Plus, I can sleep through his class, and he stil likes me!
Miracle did an awesome job! By writing his own book and homework assignments, tests were a piece of cake! Would recommend!
The Best math teacher the U of M has by far! Southern drawl is the best.
Miracle is the man. His class is incredibly easy and so are his tests. He can be a little creepy sometimes... but mostly all old men are creepy. Hands down... he is the easiest Math teacher ever.
chester is one of the most interesting prof. he has been teaching this stuff for so long he knows what he is going. his book follows the class notes exactly. overall good guy.
If you're going to be taking linear algebra or any math for that matter, you definitely want to take it with Chester Miracle. He sometimes makes mistakes in his lectures, but he knows what he's talking about and teaches the core material very well.
Miracle was awesome and a great professor, although I felt the class was a bit rushed in covering many disparate topics rather than an in depth understanding of the concepts behind it all.
One of the best professors I have ever had. He teaches by giving examples and all the exams are exactly like the worksheets you get in class. There are no surprises. Also he is extremely helpful whenever you have problems. I would recommend you take him over other professors. I got a B+ but that is only because I slacked for the final exam.
A motivated lecturer..
Chester is the best! If you can take IT calc with him, do it. I had another prov, but skipped his lectures and whent to Miracles instead! Everyone complained about his book not having page numbers... until we got to calc 4 and had to go back to a regular textbook, then everyone wanted a Miracle Workbook again!
has nothing to do with grades, all TA dependant
Make sure you get a good TA (I had Bill Beck and he was very good) because Prof. Miracle has nothing to do with how your grade turns out. It's all about your TA. Beck was a great TA, because he practically repeated the lecture during discussion. Miracle is the author of the book used for many of the math classes at the U.
great
pretty easy class. the book is good, as i learned pretty much exclusively from it. for the tests, learn to work fast, as they are long, although not difficult.
BEST Calc 3 teacher there is. He makes the textbook "cookbook" that's pretty much the test material and his lectures are him going through the cookbook so you don't really have to go to lecture as long as you understand the homework and read the short chapters.
Great Professor, He wrote the book for the course for all of the professors to use, both his book and teaching are very understandable, My grade is low because I have a harsh TA, but Miracle is AWESOME! plus he's old with a southern accent, and he likes to make jokes
Miracle is a great professor. Very nice guy. Lectures follow the book and so does the homework. Your TA will have a HUGE impact on your grade, they give you your homework and lab grades. Mine was pretty harsh.
Chester is awesome. He teaches the material well. He is also funny and unpredictable. Doing well in this class depends on who your TA is. Bad TA = Bad grade.
Just need to follow his examples in the textbook. Really nothing learning in lecture that isn't found in the book so unless you like it read to you and like seeing examples done in person it's not necessary to go to lecture.
Awesome prof. But, its almost required that the TA be a good teacher. Without a good TA, completely understanding the topic is tough to do.
Good guy. The course textbook (which he wrote)is great, better than any other math text iv seen. Still, the class itself isn't easy. Tests are a flat out race, and a bad TA will make it much, much worse.
The best professor I have ever had and the sharpest dresser at the University.
such an easy class, awesome prof too. his lectures are exactly what is in the textbook, so there's no need to go to class. he is just an adorable old man
no need to go for lecture, exams are 100% EXACTLY as in is homework. easy class, good professor and clear teaching.
His lectures can be a little hard to follow sometimes, but he knows what he's talking about. Read the book a lot, (because he wrote it) he follows the book quite well. He is a good guy to visit in office hours, and his laugh is fricken AWESOME
Wrote the textbook, and definitely knows what he is doing. Tests are challenging in that the only problem with them is the speed you must do the problems. As long as you study you will receive a fair and good grade.
Class based entirely on memorizing algorithms and performing them quickly. His textbook was essentially a list of steps for solving problems. Provided no real understanding of the subject.
Professor Miracle is a great professor! What he teaches in class and what's in the textbook is what's on the test. As long as you pay attention, the class is very easy.
Super easy class, lots of homework, horrible textbook, useless lecture. There's no need for having a professor for this class. Just study yourself and you'll do fine.
The material isn't difficult. The textbook (written by Miracle himself) spells everything out for you. Homework assignments are long, but helpful in getting the stuff embedded in your brain. Only true complaints: tests are a race to the finish and are graded pretty harshly. I wish he gave us a little more time to think!
He wrote the text book you work out of. He is an older man so when he teaches he will screw up some of the numbers, but he teaches the core concepts alright. I relied heavily on the T.A. for help, but Mr. Miracle is not that bad.
A stunningly bad class in almost every regard. The homework levels are oppressive, the lecture is 100% from overhead slides (and is fairly incomprehensible), and the book is randomly arranged by subject. If you can take this class from a different professor, do so.
Extremely easy and useful class if you put in the effort to learn it from HW and discussion worksheets. Everything you need is in the book he wrote.
Chester Miracle is amazing. He is one of the best professors I have ever had. He writes the text book, so the lecture examples are just like the homework and the tests. He is southern and has a funny sense of humor.
This professor was great. He wrote the book himself and he hand writes the examples on a chalk board so it was easy to follow along. The homework was more difficult than the tests, so if you understand the homework then you'll do fine on his tests.
CHESTER IS AMAZING! GO CHESTER! GO! GO!
Terrible instructor. He has written his own book, which is devoid of mathematical rigor or proofs of theorems. For a math major, this is very frustrating. The linear algebra part of the class is embarrassingly sparse. The differential equations are fine, but focus only on problem solving strategies and not underlying concepts or theories. Avoid.
Miracle is a safe bet for calculus. He wrote the textbook and writes the midterms for CSE Calc, so he teaches to the tests. The textbook examples, HW, and discussions are exactly like the midterms, but harder. He is very old (PhD 1956), and it's not uncommon for him to lose track of lecture problems, but reading the book works if all else fails.
Age is starting to get the better of Miracle. He's written the textbook, but frequently messes up problems on the board. The midterms are exactly like problems from the homeworks. Take him if you want to, but lectures might not be hugely useful.
Chester is the professor to take for 1371 if you are interested in getting a solid A. He teaches toward his hour exams and his discussions are virtually the same as the tests. Lectures can get bland sometimes but ultimately worthwhile to attend. Professor Miracle wrote the textbook. He teaches through it verbatim. (It's a great resource)
Chester is hilarious. Messes up literally every problem. "What did I do wrong? Where did the 2 go? Hue hue, oh well." Never asks for questions or faces the students, but no one notices because everyone is asleep because of his molasses-like southern accent. Pay attention in discussion, do the worksheets, and read the book. You'll be fine.
Good professor if math comes easily to you. Math is hard for me, and I found that he did a poor job at explaining concepts and applications of the math. He expects you to learn by example, but often made mistakes in examples and went too fast for me to follow. The class is a lot of work, and requires a lot of practice. He is, however, approachable.
I took calc I in high school, so I knew most of the material already. Which was good, because Chester wasn't the best lecturer. Would make mistakes on every other example, one he couldn't find his mistake and just said "oh well, lets move on huh huh". But follow the book and you'll do fine. You'll fall asleep in lecture at least once. Safe bet
Lectures were dull and he always made mistakes. The only good part about his class is that the tests are exactly like the book/homework problems.
he knows his stuff i mean he wrote the textbook but a lot of times he makes small mistakes or forgets his train of thought during lecture. chesters gettin old.
Miracle's lectures were usually boring and un-captivating. He's getting pretty old and makes lots of minor mistakes on the board. With that said, i'd recommend the class simply cuz the book (which he wrote for the class), homework, and tests were all extremely complementary. Rarely, if ever, saw a problem on the test that i hadn't seen before.
Very good teacher. He knows the material very well. You definitely need to go to the lectures as he will go over the processes need to complete the problems. He wrote the textbook, worksheets, and tests himself, so if you pay attention to him you will pass.
His tests were exactly like the homework and it was very clear what to study. He wrote the book so it is very helpful. His lectures were very long and boring as he is getting old, but he is a great guy.
If you've taken calculus before you're fine. Lectures aren't very helpful besides getting problems similar to the homework. He doesn't explain anything and tends to miss numbers during lecture, but his tests are easy. Be careful taking his class if you don't have a calculus background.
He isn't that good of a teacher, but he writes his own book and tests.. So the tests are like the homework. I'm taking him again for calc 2 just cause he writes his own book and tests. He's a sweet guy! Not a very good lecturer but if you get the homework you should do fine on the tests!
Not the best lecturer as he makes many mistakes. Writes his own textbook so the homework is just like the exams-- do the homework!
I had Miracle for Calc 1 and 2, and once I understood his class format and teaching style, the class became very easy. Although his lectures may be confusing, my TA's for both Calc 1 and 2 saved my life. Make sure to attend discussion and do the worksheets; the review sheets are just like the test. Also, homework is graded (one assignment a week).
Chester knows exactly what he's doing (he wrote the text book), but he often makes mistakes in lecture and just goes over what he wrote in the text. I didn't find the lectures very helpful. I found that the best way to do well in the class make sure to understand the homework probs because those are the exact probs that will appear on test.
if you know how to do the homework problems and the worksheets, A is guaranteed. His lectures were not very helpful, just go to discussion and do the worksheets.
Chester Miracle was a great Calc professor. He has been teaching calculus for who knows how many years and has perfected his teaching methods. He uses his own textbooks meaning all of the homework, tests, worksheets and lectures are written in the same format. Pay attention to how Chester works through problems and you can ace every test.
He wrote his own textbook, so as long as you read the textbook you are fine. You're even better off because he makes a good amount of mistakes in lecture anyway. Also, his tests are exactly like the homework and textbook, so if you know the homework you will ace the tests.
I don't have a Calculus background, and Professor Miracle doesn't really explain the things he's doing. Even though I go to lecture, I get basically nothing from it. I read the textbook instead. It's written by him, which goes to show he's a brilliant man, just not necessarily good at teaching verbally.
Do the homework and youll be fine, tests are basically reworked questions outta the book
good prof
Chester was one of the worst teachers I had this semester. He would drone on in lecture doing the same problems over and over, while making tons of mistakes that he wouldn't fix. If you haven't taken calc before don't take Chester you won't learn anything. If you have, you'll be fine but you'll be insanely annoyed.
Miracle is the worst professor I have ever had. I can't believe he is still even allowed to teach at a major university like the U. Honestly I took AP Calc AB and he made me MORE confused on material I already knew. Easy material, though. Tests are straightforward and easy as expected. You learn EVERYTHING in discussion, so go to those.
Chester is very good at explaining processes, especially in the textbook. Lectures are easy to follow if you can understand his southern gentlemanly accent, homework is straightforward, easy to find reference for, and worth doing. Great class!
Good professor, tests basically right out of textbook problems so do the review and you'll do great on the exams. Exam graders seem to be quite lenient with points. Homework can take a very long time to complete!
50 years ago Miracle may have been a great professor. Now, not so much. Lectures are incredibly dull and sometimes hard to follow. He frequently makes mistakes in his work. Good news is that the tests are exactly like the worksheets and homework, if you've do those, you're golden. It would take a miracle for me to sign up for his class again.
Seems like a nice guy, but good lord, he can't explain things to save his life, and when TA's would try and explain concepts to students that he hadn't conveyed well, he would actually get them in trouble because he was the course chair. Terribly run class, do not recommend him to anybody.
Miracle was a terrible lecturer. He would basically write up examples straight from the textbook and would switch the type of problem he was showing without warning or purpose. He also didn't take a single question in lecture all semester. Discussion and great TAs are what got me through this class. Tests are very reflective of hw and worksheets.
Prof. Miracle is a great guy but a poor lecturer, and his textbook is worse. You'll have to memorize many useless theorems you'll never use again, and prepare for tests which are far more interested in how you're doing the problem than whether you understand the material. Not a heavy homework load, but watch out for the tests.
There were worksheets in discussion to go with the concepts in class. The problems on there were basically what the test was so if you knew them, you would do well. It wasn't a very hard class and the grading was very straightforward. The discussions are important though because it's where you learn the most stuff.
I had AP credit for Calc 1 but decided to retake it. If you have not taken calculus before, I would not recommend doing it with Chester. Lectures are boring, and he makes a lot of mistakes on the board. Expect to learn everything in discussion. Luckily, the examples in the book and discussion worksheets are nearly identical to the tests.
His lectures are generally very boring. I think the discussion sections by his TAs were more helpful for me. However, the textbook which was written by him is well-written and it is very helpful.
Chester Miracle is a great guy and is very entertaining, but has a difficult time explaining things in lecture; he often makes mistakes and confuses himself. Despite his mistakes, Dr. Miracle teaches concepts by example, something that helped me understand the material much better. Don't forget about the homework- counts for a lot and hurt my grade
People underestimate how college level calculus is harder than high school calculus. Tests are very fast, and it's crucial to read the book and do practice problems. However, PLEASE go to Chester's office hours; he's very caring. Also, he realizes who's skipping or on their computer. Stop being arrogant and pay attention; you might learn something.
His lectures hardly made sense and were very difficult to follow.
Not a great professor, but definitely not terrible. Lecture is a bit hard to pay attention to (boring and slow) but he covers all the content fairly well.
