Dr. Chiu-Groff was helpful, especially out of class. The topic (genetics) is dense, but Dr. Chiu-Groff will go out of her way to help (although she isn't a push-over). I was a little concerned going into the course, but she speaks clearly and seems to make it her goal to get students to actually understand the material.
hard topic - good prof. take it if you are interested in genetics, don't if you're lazy/stupid. not an easy A but she makes it interesting so its not bad.
She is really outgoing. Shes very easy to understand (doesn't even have an accent so don't let her name throw you off). Its clear that she has a deep understanding of her field. easy easy class
Dr. Chiu is an easy grader, which makes her students like her. But don't be fooled- You aren't learning a thing. She likes to throw around lots of jargon, but if you really pay attention it's just a word salad. Take her class if you want an A, but take one over in bio if you want to learn genetics.
She talks a whole lot, but nothing of substance passes her lips. Great class for an easy A, but ig you'd like to actually delve into the subject, look elsewhere
She talks a lot and rambles on especially about her son. There are clicker quizzes but you get full points for just doing them. She also offers an extra credit assignment. She's teaching genetics next semester so I would definitely take it with her.
I took her evolution course. Coming in, I had an interest in the subject. Her class was horrible. Exams didn't match up with lecture, her grading was inconsistent, and she was rude. I am a medical student, and her class almost turned me off from learning science. Astonishing that this course will be my only B after 4 years of college at kent.
Chiu is a challenging professor, but I wouldn't say that she is difficult. She provides lecture transcripts of every ppt which are the way to go for studying for exams. In evolution she assigns projects, which are sometimes time consuming but not that difficult. Going to class is a must since she has a lot of clicker questions.
Dr. Chiu-Groff makes this subject fascinating. You have to work hard to get an A. She is a fair grader and really tries to help students succeed. She uses good examples and introduces you to the latest science articles. I never thought evol as a modern science but she makes you see this.
Nice lady, great teacher. Does NOT have an accent despite her name. Attendance is not mandatory but she does give clicker quizzes (sometimes unannounced) often for participation points. Need online textbook code for homework. Offers extra credit. Posts lecture power points and transcripts (her explanation of each slide) online.
I had Dr. Chiu for elements of genetics. She's someone who really cares about her students. She expects you to read the book, but you can still do well on exams without it. GO TO CLASS for the clicker quizzes. At the end of the semester, if you're on a borderline grade, she'll look at your attendance and use that to decide if she's going to bump u
she doesn't have an accent. If you do not go to class you wont pass because of clickers. Test are hard and application based; there are no definition questions. She gave 30 points of extra credit, 100pts of hw Final is not cumulative and it is really easy to pass her class. I failed all three tests got a D on the final and got a C+ so take her.
Before taking genetics I heard it's a hard boring class. Dr. Groff changed my mind I guess others hadn't taken the course w her. She is a smart lady, fun, and makes the class fly by. Also I learned more in this class than any other in Biology. You should attend lecture and keep up with the material. She wants students to succeed. Take evol w her.
TAKE THIS CLASS IN FLORENCE. if you are a bio major and need this for graduation i highly recommend taking this class during the 4 week florence summer semester. yes the classes are long. yes theres a test every week. BUT you are in florence italy! she was so helpful and understood that you wanted weekends to travel and have fun.
In all honesty, she's not a good teacher at all. She's a very nice person, but the only reason i went to class is because of the clicker quizzes each day. If you just read from the book, read her powerpoints, transcripts, and study guides, you'll be fine. Just go to class, but do some other class' hw since her lectures are not helpful.
Great teacher not sure who could state otherwise. She's not a pushover and u need to work to get an A. But she's fair and wants u to succeed. If u want to learn genetics and not focus in stats u need to take her. I tell all my friends to take her.
Dr Groff gave out many powerpoints lecture materials exam reviews 4online genetics which was really helpful but her exams are the hardest ever two answers may be right but one is more correct and better than the other It takes weeks of studying to get and know and get an A on her type of exams I even met her for her office hours she made available
This was my first online class and genetics is hard for me. This professor provides really good study materials. The pedigree project is fun and the prof sent good feedback. Tests are challenging be prepared to work.
human genetics online exams are really hard there is NO proctoring so textbook use is available and powerpoints can be used etc we had a pedigree project for us to formulate any inherited traits we may have in family 5 exams which are sooo hard her multiple choice questions are very difficult and tricky you must pay attention to them closely
I took Elements of Genetics with her last fall. She is a great lecturer and made me want to learn more. Now I watch for articles about genetics and I even can mostly understand them. I had a hard time on the first test but I went to her office hours and she gave me good study strategies. Her exams are tough but if you study you can do well.
Took Evolution with her. Her course is tough but she supplies you with a lot of study materials. Her questions were application questions so you really have to know the material. She's definitely a good professor and does her very best to help her students succeed with a lot of extra credit.
Organization is a big problem with this professor. Her directions were typically unclear and her exams were nothing like any of the information she supplied you with. I was a not a fan of genetics to begin with; now I simply despise the subject.
One of the best professors at Kent, she loves what she teaches and that carries across in her lectures. You need to read the book and attend her lectures. If you don't this hinders your clicker grade, and will reduce your performance on the exam. Shes super nice and friendly and does not want any of her students to fail!
Do not take online.
Class was organized and the prof gave great study materials. Met with her in office hours and she was so helpful. You have to study and pace yourself. I learned a lot about genetics.
I just finished the online section of this class and earned an A. I couldn't attend office hours in person but phoned the professor several times in the semester and she was very nice and helped me study. If you do the assigned reading and study the materials she puts on blackboard the exams are straightforward. She gave extra credit that was fun.
Had this professor for Elements of Genetics last semester and Evolution this semester. Got a B in Genetics and will get an A in Evolution. Best prof in Kent Biology! She cares and wants you to learn. She inspires you to learn. She is one of the smartest people I've met. The most important thing is she expects you to work and won't coddle you.
For an online class this was very difficult. She constantly wanted us to read the book and said how their would be test questions from the book. At least 10 questions on each exam was on material I had never even heard of. Studying her lecture notes and the book will not prepare you for the exam.
This is an organized class by a good teacher. If you do all the readings listed as required in the study guide and study the powerpoints and do sample problems the tests are completely manageable. I learned a lot. It's online so you gotta be disciplined.
I took Evol w her this summer in Florence ITALY. It's an interesting course and she is an amazing prof. She encourages you to enjoy the study abroad experience & at the same time challenges you to learn and do well. It's nice being able to share ideas w her and she is super accessible and friendly. Take this prof!
Terrible at lectures, has a bad attitude, and thinks everyone is trying to be a doctor someday and do research. Would go out and drink with her but worst professor ever.
Had her for genetics and liked her so I chose to take evolution with her too. Gave a TON of extra credit and even changed the syllabus for us to make test grades weigh less. 4 class discussions so participate as much as you can. 4 tests and occasional clicker pop quizzes so go to lecture. Didn't really need the textbook.
She makes genetics interesting. 4 exams, clicker quizzes, and a few extra credits. Very funny and smart but you gotta be serious and work. She really took the time to help me in office hours so Go talk to her. I will take evolution with her and maybe her lab. Very good professor.
If you could rate Condescending on a scale of 1-10, Chiu cranks that up to an 11. If you ask any questions, she's going to assume you're an idiot, and tell you to read the book. She has no respect for students, and is easily the most annoying professor I've ever had. But she gives loads of extra credit, and it's very easy to get an A in her course.
Class difficulty aside, she is easily one of the most rude, patronizing people I've ever met. If you don't mind taking from a professor who has no business interacting with other humans in a learning environment, then you'll be totally fine. While she is intelligent, she has zero respect for students and I expect way more out of a prof than that.
I got a B with Dr. Chiu and worked hard for it. I struggled with the first two exams but it was on me since I was mostly memorizing and her exams are applications. There is extra credit but the four exams make up most of hte grade. She was very helpful in class and in office hoursand I feel she taught me effective ways to study. Great prof.
Incredibly condescending. Clicker questions are done on things you learn that day and count as a grade. If the class doesn't do as well as she wants, she puts down everyone. Very rude. Claims she's doing it because she wants you to succeed but once told us that 5th graders could do the math better than we were doing it. Nice outside of class though
Incredibly rude and condescending. I will admit that she's very knowledgeable of biology and genetics but she won't hesitate to make you feel stupid if you ask a question or say a wrong answer. I already didn't care for genetics and now I completely despise the subject. I might be changing my major because of her class.
A fair and smart teacher who treats you as an adult. Im an older student so maybe what others call condescending I would call being clear on expectations. I learned a lot about genetics from her and she makes it interesting. Very good professor!
Professor Groff is the best at Kent! I had her for genetics and evolution and cant say enough about how much I learned and how much I enjoyed the topics. She provides so much stuff in blackboard and gives many different kinds of assignments to earn your grade. Shes intelligent and commmnicates with the students regularly. Love her!
I do not recommend her, her teaching methods aren't for everyone. I took genetics with her but will avoid taking her again for evolution.
I took elements with Prof. Groff last year and thought she was fair but tough. I have come to appreciate and use all I learned in her class and also how to solve application problems. I did very well on the mcat due to what I learned. She is an effective teacher. I will take her for evolution and hear lots of good comments about her class.
She's hilarious and smart! Take her for genetics and evolution. Don't be put off by her frank personality. She is really fair and focused on your learning.
Dr Chiu is a pretty good teacher, she gets side tracked but is extremely passionate about the subject. If you go to class and get the clicker question points, that will help your grade a lot - although you do have to get the questions correct. Print out the transcripts and study guides that she provides!
I struggled my way through genetics the first half of the semester, her exams are heavily application based, memorizing only is simply not enough. She provided great feedback, useful advice when I would come to her office hours, and she is extremely caring. Dedicated to helping her students succeed. Looking forward to evolution with her!
She knows what she's teaching, and is very passionate about the subject. If you have a question about genetics, she definitely has an interesting answer, and discussion to go along with it! However, her lecture style is rather odd, and not for everyone. She can also get rather condescending with students when they aren't understanding the material.
She is not the person you are looking around to mess up with she will make you hate your own life so beware before stepping into her class she has a different kind of attitude that you wont like
I had heard Prof. Groff is tough but I was pleasantly surprised when I took Evokution with her. She is knowledgeable and professional and I really learned a lot in the class. She has high expectations but she is very clear about them and helps you achieve them.
She is a very good professor who clearly loves all that is DNA. Genetics is the hardest class Ive taken. You have to work in this class and dont be entitled because she wont have none of that. Just work hard and attend class. Pay attention to her study tips and use everything she puts on blackboard. She is nice to talk to but intense in class.
She's condescending when people don't understand. She spent most of our classes just lecturing us about how we need to know the information, but she doesn't take the time to actually teach it. She ALWAYS talks about the MCAT and cell bio so good luck. Her clicker questions are almost impossible and is the only reason I'll get a B instead of an A.
I had Professor Chiu for Genetics and am in Evolution this semester. I will get a high B or maybe an A. She is a very smart professor who handles large lecture classes so well. It is impressive how much she knows about all sorts of biology topics. I've learned so much from her. She is professional and nice.
One of the most condescending professors I've ever had. Her class would be so much better if she had respect for her students.
This professor has a LOT of respect for students. Students can be super entitled. She gives great lectures and her exams challenge you to think and learn. You have to want to learn and I guess some students would rather have stuff handed to them. She won't do that but you WILL learn biology from her. Excellent prof!!
I absolutely loved her although a lot of people that would say shes very condescending are the ones that were lazy and didnt put any effort in her class it is an upper division class so shes not going to hand feed you stuff so you really have to work for your grade I highly recommend going to SI it will really help your grade
Dr. Groff is an amazing professor. Her lecture that included some of her hox research got me so interested in the genes that I want to do research on them. I had her for genetics a year ago and thought she was fair but gave tough exams but now after taking evolution with her this semester Ive come to appreciate all that she has taught me.
Dr. Chiu loves genetics and it shows in her class and in office hours. Ive seen and heard students be so rude and entitled to her. She takes it in stride and just continues teaching. Students who expect an A without working leave these bad comments. She is a great instructor and will teach you genetics and how to study. A plus professor!
Extremely condescending in class
A very smart and fair professor. She has a strong personality tho- she may look gentle but she is tough. You have to work for your grade but she makes the class so interesting. The last module on cancer is the best. Pedigrees were also fun. Her exam questions make you apply concepts and interpret lots of figures. I have her for evol in the fall.
I worked harder for this class than ochem, and I did get an A. I still think she is condescending and rude, don't know what these guys are talking about.
I loved taking Elements of Genetics with her and tell all of my friends to take her. I've heard several kids say that her class is full and no way to get it so that seems to say alot about how she's very good. Why are you surprised it's as hard as Organic chem? It's an upper division class. Hope y'all get into her class though she's popular.
I've taken her for genetics in the past and am taking evolution with her. She really helps you engage with the material! She's really passionate about the material and can answer any question. You'll have to really work to pass but her expectations are reasonable and clear. But she's very critical of her class, and so can often come across as rude.
Worst professor at Kent State by far. Gives stupid clicker quizzes that will ruin your grade. Doesn't understand how to write questions on her exams. Extremely condescending to most students. Her exams aren't too hard, as long as her questions actually make sense, but that's about a 50/50 chance.
To the people that complain this class is hard, it's an upper division biology course, of course it's going to be hard. Talk to Chiu in her office hours, show her you care, and work hard; she respects that and takes that into account for your final grade. I can see her as being condescending, but she isn't malicious. An excellent prof that cares.
her tests are very hard because they are super long and there is not enough time in one class. i was always rushed to get it done and a lot of the questions dont make sense. her lecture slides are very vague and she doesnt give a lot of other info in class. do not recommend
One of my favorite professors ever. She was very nice at office hours, and really wants you to understand the material. The lecture transcripts are a good way to prepare for the tests. There is definitley test questions straight from the textbook, but you won't fail an exam or even drop a letter grade if you don't buy it.
Monotone lectures, very disconnected material. I needed to read the book to actually get any definitions and even then, someone was ridiculed for reading the definition straight from the book. She said she had a photographic memory but said the book definition was wrong. That sums up how the class went and taking notes straight from the book helps
She is not a bad professor, she explains most of the material well but her teaching style isn't the best for this class in my opinion. Her lectures consist of power points that usually contain only images and greatly requires you to do textbook reading to understand the concepts. She is a really tough grader, and can be pretty mean at times.
She is kind, but also fairly in her own head. A fair number of students went from having mid/high A's to getting C's/B's because her online exams during COVID were confusing and poorly made. In an e-mail, she even admitted she skewed the grades of students if they did certain things, showing clear bias and discrimination for lack of good reason.
I had Dr. Chiu during a remote semester. The class was already difficult on top of the fact that it was remote. Dr. Chiu acknowledges that her classes are typically very difficult and will do everything to help her students pass. She changed the format of her class dramatically to ensure everyone's success. She's tough, but she genuinely cares.
Took Dr. Groff online and I would rather take Ochem twice than take this professor ever again. Very rude and hostile, often was condescending when students asked questions making them feel dumb, and held students responsible for technical issues. If you had excused absences the make up work was 10x harder and proctorio caused severe anxiety for all
She is a very nice person and acts like she is caring. The content is extremely difficult and she has no understanding of the challenge of a remote course. She may be a good professor in person, but don't take her classes remotely. This is my second class with her and everything about her class is more difficult than is needed.
Shes really good. She can be a bit intimidating in class, but shes super sweet in office hours. I havent had a problem with her. Watch the lectures and take lots of notes. Rewrite those notes and draw things out if need be. I havent read the textbook once, and Im most likely going to get an A in the class. Exams are very application based.
Not understanding. Her syllabus is horrible. She will embarrass students in front of the class. Good at teaching the material and is passionate about what she does. Liked her at first. :/ my advice for her: maybe consider being more compassionate.
She acts like she is caring but she isn't <3 obsessed with finding out that people are cheating. She is genuinely just a horrible professor. Yikes.
She didn't teach me much but she did give me low self-esteem and anger issues <3
You either love her or hate her, and personally I don't see what everyone thinks is wrong with her. She really is there for you, she wants you to learn, her lectures (imho) are easy to follow and she is always willing to indulge your curiosity. One of the best professors I've had this semester, but you do have to work for it.
Im not gone say even say too much. Just dont let take her class if you enjoy peace and sanity.
No matter what you think of her I have to admit - she personally saved hundreds of lives. Because thanks to her class I realized I am too dumb to become a doctor. She expects you to know everything and poorly explains things. Exams are hard, there is a reason so many people fail this class.
Pretty funny hes a good teacher that covers a lot of material. She throws in a few funny stories and tidbits of life advice too
I never had her as a professor specifically, but I sat in on my friends class at 9am, and let me just tell you.... Shes so sweet and if you honestly ask for help and tell her straight up that you need real help, she will give you ever chance to bring your grade up.
She is an absolute sweetheart. We struggled on the first exam, so she completely revamped how things were graded and gave us so much extra credit. I got an A in the class even though I scored Cs on the last two exams. Besides, if you talk with her and show that you care, she will be more than accommodating. The content is also very interesting.
She's definitely a caring teacher. Very focused and lectures deeply. It's really how much you study and care. Exams were all multiple choice. Go to office hours and show her you really do care and she'll give studying advice. The only issue I found with her was her telling us to study over holidays in order to do well on the final. It was draining.
This lady is literally evil. Run the other direction and take this class with anyone else. She is the spawn of satan and is super fake. Will be nice to your face but a menace behind your back. She was super demeaning to us in class and talked to us like we were toddlers. I only got an A in this class miraculously, not due to her in any way.
Ive had a lot of garbage professors. Shes no different. Her tests were fine but her notes were awful!! Literally just a picture of a tree on a slide and u had to write down everything she said bc 95% of her slides were like that. Hated this class. Also said I did a paper all wrong WI all bc I didnt use a scientific source. Wasnt specified
Dr Groff is a wonderful teacher. I feel like a lot of people are quick to act like she's awful because she is strict and, let's face it genetics is difficult. I went to her office hours I spoke with her Regularly, and she is very approachable and kind. Work hard study and follow directions you'll be fine.
She can be pretty strict, but I wouldn't say it was a hard class. I'd pay close attention to her attendance policy; she only lets you turn in assignments if you were physically in the room when she assigned them. She's picky with wording on essays and extended response questions, but as long as you show up and pay attention you should be okay.
Very moody/fake and easily set off. Her logic makes no sense and is beyond paranoid that people are cheating even when she assigns you group work. If you work hard and study up for the exams you should be able to pass the class but I would recommend keeping your head down and going to office hours when you can.
Dr. Groff can be a bit blunt/severe but you shouldn't take it personally. I think she just comes off passive-agressive. I did not find this class as hard as some of my peers, but it does require that you show up to lecture, do the online hw, and study before exams. Her exams are reminiscent of standardized tests (think AP), but manageable. All MC.
I liked her at first but she comes off as passive-aggressive and is a super tough grader. I feel like the content itself was easy enough to understand, but I ended up getting low scores on the exams despite being confident that I knew the answer to almost every question. I'm normally a straight-A student and I still don't understand what happened.
Gets a bad rap since Dr. Groff is prone to spending the beginning of class complaining about the dumb emails some students write. However, I don't think she's a bad professor. Very tough extended response grader but offers some good extra credit at the end in her "Evolution Blitz." That being said, she's the only evolution professor, good luck.
If you show up you can get an A, but it's a very frustrating A. Nothing in her lectures besides pictures making it a guessing game for her exams. Not straightforward at all. Very passive-aggressive and makes you feel stupid for asking questions. Not a friendly person in the slightest, not sure what happened to her this spring. Avoid if you can.
Throughout the semester, she constantly obsessed with attendance. A student was a minute late to class and she spent the next 15 minutes lecturing the class on attendance. She also would prohibit students from completing assignments if they were late, even a minute! She also has terrible handwriting and the exams are based off what she writes.
Dr. Groff was probably the worst professor I've ever had at Kent State. She loves spending lecture time discussing cheating and threatening to send students to student conduct. I studied so much for her exams and she constantly told me that I should change my major, and neglected me as a student. Pretty much told me I was not gonna pass her class.
Dr Chiu is my girl!! she definitely plays favorite and can be mean but just stay on her good side..... her slides are terrible but the lectures are dense. and her test are insane but if you go to SI and really study its not hard. I know it sounds awful but she's a pretty good prof.
Dr. Chi Hua Groff routinely degrades her students. She is not able to properly communicate her expectations and then shames those who answer her questions incorrectly. Her honors paper is given with little instruction besides due dates and paper length. She gives an amazing academic lecture, but is overall horrible at communication with students.
Dr. Chiu's slides have little to no information only pictures and graphs so take extremely good notes. Her exams are all multiple choice but you need to study the material enough to be very sure on your understanding to answer the questions. She gives 15 extra credit points at the end of the semester for a one slide ppt, had to take her for major :/
Terrible. For so many reasons.
I have taken 2 classes with Dr. Groff and they both were undeniably difficult. It is very lecture heavy with a good amount of assigned reading. Her lectures basically have no words on each slide, just random graphs and tables. I constantly studied for this class, but I still did not do well. This class added a lot of stress to my semester.
The beginning was rough, problem-solving grading was not clear, she was condescending, paranoid of cheating. However, by the end of the semester, things turned around. If you show up, take notes, and mind your own business, you'll be fine. Best of luck reading her handwriting, and for your own sake, don't join the groupme, she has eyes everywhere.
Dr. Groff is a very tough professor. However, she taught her lectures very well. Everyday, she gave a summary before class of what is due and what is coming up. In order to do well on her tests and problem solving sets, it was crucial to not fall behind. She gave a ton of extra credit towards the end of the class and rewarded improvement.
She is a lecture-heavy professor that only speaks about exam topics for approx 2 minutes and never again. Her practice questions/exams are the simplest questions possible, while the actual exam consists of 5+ sentence questions and answers that are all the same except one word. I'm usually an A student, but not in this class. AVOID!
The material is hard, but she somehow makes it harder. She's very demeaning and if you ask questions she'll often make you feel like an idiot. Her problem solvings are ridiculous and she doesn't give partial credit so you're basically screwed unless you answer the question to her ridiculous standards. Avoid if you can.
Professor Groff was a lot better for evolution than genetics. After the class scored bad on an exam she took lecture time to talk how she could be better or change the slides and discussions to help the class better prepare for the exam which was helpful. Exams were tough application based, but she really wants the best for students.
People give her a bad rap but she gives you what you need to succeed. All of the material on the exam is covered in class and in the homework. There is also A LOT of opportunity for extra credit.
Professor Groff was one of the most rude and disrespectful professors I've ever had the displeasure of interacting with. She would constantly belittle & shame students for asking questions or answering hers incorrectly. You HAVE to take notes to pass. I took this with an 18 hr semester and a job. It was impossible. Good luck if you have to take her
If I could give her a 0 I would. She's very rude, demeaning, and will make you feel stupid. If you put in a lot of effort and try hard on the discussion responses, you'll do fine. She does give extra credit, and it's very hard to get good grades without that.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HER. Very passive-aggressive and quite rude. Thinks everyone is cheating and make you stressed for no reason. Exams are horrible and slides have nothing on them. No idea how this is called teaching.
Dr. Groff is a difficult professor. She is often very rude and makes you feel like an idiot for asking questions. She is a very hard grader and her class will make you work but it is doable. If you can get over not liking her and study a lot you can get a good grade in the class.
People just think she's rude because she's serious about people cheating, why is that a horrible thing? She is a fine teacher, people just like to place blame on teachers for them doing poorly in a class.
The best way to pass the class is to show up to every. single. lecture. Especially right after exams. Do all the reading & take notes during class. Visit her during office hours & she's very willing to help with questions. She very much tells you it's your own responsibility to put in work to do well in the class & that's why she's so blunt
She is not a very good teacher.
She is an insane professor. Lectures leave students more tangled than enlightened. It is like trying to squeeze blood out of a stone. Grading seems random as a roll of the dice. Her assignments are imprecise and pointless. The only constant thing is cruelty. Students get a significant drop in their academic journey. You all have my deep condolences
Evolution is known to be a hard course, but it is doable. Dr. Chiu can be strict and have high expectations, but this is college, so what do you expect? Show up to every lecture, participate in discussions, and read the textbook and you will succeed in the course. Dr. Chiu is very accessible outside of class and extremely kind during office hours.
Most awful Professor I have ever met. Very random grader. So hard to understand w
As another student had stated, this is college. Of course students complain when they cannot get their A easily. If you attend lectures each class, go to office hours with your notes, read the book, study a few days each exam, and do the discussion assignments, you will be okay. She truly cares for you, just show her you aren't a snoody cheater.
These reviews are bugging. She is a fine professor if you are there to learn material and demonstrate your understanding through brief written assignments and exams. She even bumps grades and gives extra credit. She is not a sweetheart, but if you don't need coddled then you will be fine. My biggest complaint is a handful of unclear exam questions.
Genuinely one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. She explained material clearly in class but the tests were sometimes god awful. I loved her as a person and I did attend office hours regularly. After the final and extra credit, I ended up with a B in the class but since I went to office hours and improved, she bumped me up. Study hard.
Attendance is not graded but you really cannot miss a lecture for this class. If you take good notes, pay attention to lecture material, and study a couple of hours for exams you should do fine. SI sessions were super helpful as well as attending office hours. She's not a mean person and answers any questions, and I found the lectures entertaining.
Professor Groff is the worst professor I've had so far. She tests you on material not covered in lecture and blames the class for "not reading questions correctly" when the average exam scores are in the 70's. Groff called her class unintelligent in every way imaginable without actually saying it and belittled us every chance she got. Entitled.
Genetics class is obviously gonna be hard if you have never been exposed to the material. She repeatedly stated that the class was challenging and that she expected mastery over the material. She could be more understanding and grade lighter but she is not a bad teacher. If you don't spend time outside of class your not gonna pass.
Dr.Groff is a cool person but she makes her exams needlessly hard. If you study you will do well but most questions she asks them in a confusing way. She can also be condescending in her office hours and she comes off as extremely rude. tbh I was discouraged to attend her office hours after the way she talked to me in prior office hours.
Groff is very selective with the people she likes. If you get on her bad side it will reflect in your grades as I started with As and gradually dropped to 70% on problem sets. Asks the most confusing, unclear questions. She gets angry and belittles students when they do not understand her wording. She disregards any concerns students bring to her.
Scraping the bottom 5 worst professors I've ever had here. Assignments have virtually no direction and are worded poorly. Tests are needlessly hard and cover topics not discussed in class. She is deeply insecure and paranoid about cheating in the class to a comical degree, I'll be praying for anyone who is required to take this.
Does not convey material clearly, lectures convey concepts well, only for exams to require in depth knowledge of scientific papers and things barely (if at all) discussed in class. Does not do a good job of preparing students for graded assignments, then chastises and patronizes students for “not having read the book”
I totally understand that rate my professor can be bias from students with poor grades. Not me, I got an A with little to no studying. That being said, AVOID AT ALL COSTS. She is degrading, condescending, arrogant, and spiteful. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the good reviews left on here were from her. No way this many people like her teaching.
If you have to take Dr Chiu and are scared going through this page: don't. If you're a student who cares, likes to learn, and is trying their best you're gonna be okay! Yes, her classes are difficult and require you to work hard, but Dr. Chiu knows that and really cares to help you. Work hard, good luck, and keep an open mind :-) PS - go to SI.
Professor Groff's class is challenging but rewarding if you put in the work. Attend lectures, take thorough notes, and utilize resources like unstuck study for study prep. She can be stern, but engaging with her teaching style pays off. Overall, a tough but worthwhile course.
I thought Dr. Chiu was a great lecturer (and still do). However, her grading can make no sense and her questions can be VERY vague. Beware of raising your hand in class because she often talks to students like they are dumb when they have the wrong answer and accuse everyone of not reading the book even when we do. Will be glad to never have again.
She was always rude to students. Never saw herself as the problem when students were struggling. She writes on her slides with her finger so her handwriting is really sloppy and it's hard to tell what she's writing. Go to her office hours to succeed. She plays favorites and if you make time to go see her she'll like you and grade you less harshly.
Dr. Groff is an amazing professor and person. She is always caring for her students. I had her for both evolution and genetics and she always answered my questions, even if I thought they were dumb. It isn't smart to miss the lectures because she says more than what is on the slides and you will be tested on it. I strongly recommend.
Definitely plays favorites. Go to her office hours, especially to review exams. Participate in class too. Her exams are HARD, the wording is confusing and the answers are often hard to rule out. Take it slow, think through each choice and don't panic. She is caring in an odd way, like a mother-in-law.
Dr. Chiu knows a lot about Evolution and Genetics, and so she tends to expect her students to understand the material very well. However, these expectations are very clear, and her study guides + other posted materials are detailed. If you go to class and study the material, you will do well. She is very nice and wants her students to do well.
I love Dr. Groff as a person. My only complaint is that she lectures as if the students should already have a good understanding of what she is talking about during lecture. You can read the textbook but you can get by without reading it. She's sweet, amazing teacher and really tries to know her students as long as you also put in effort!
The class was overall not that bad as long as you have previously taken cell biology. Yes, the text book is required through flash books and I would recommend to follow the schedule and read through the book and do the homework along with it. Go to office hours and if you aren't comfortable with asking questions in class save them for office hours.
just take to some other professor.
Possibly the most condescending professor you could have, however she did know the material well. She teaches an easy class but wants to feel like she's teaching a difficult subject. She's deathly allergic to bees...
She's alright, pretty polarizing for how you will feel about her. None of the material is particularly difficult to understand but her exams require a deeper understanding of the course than she really provides. If you took her for Genetics and didn't like her, I'd suggest looking into the summer session of evolution taught by someone else.
Overall, a difficult class. Not the clearest communicator and definitely chooses favorites.
Her exams are difficult, she will say its self-explanatory and not meant to be hard, but then there will be a question with two correct answers, but in her mind one makes more sense and so even if you select the other correct answer, it will be marked wrong. She does try to help students, but when you don't get it, she makes you feel stupid.
