Great teacher, it’s obvious he is obsessed with teaching strategy. It shows in his passion for talking about it. You’re guaranteed a “B” unless you totally slack off and don’t show up to class. Mid-term and final are both short answer and are intellectually challenging. As always, try to get a good group. It makes life so much easier.
Dr. Lee is a dynamic, energetic teacher. He expects you to have the same energy and drive to discuss the material that he has.
Dr. Lee delivers interesting lectures and he is very enthusiastic about the material. His enthusiasm spreads and it makes for interesting class discussions. Grading- wise he's hit-or-miss; you have to determine EXACTLY what he wants in order to do well. Overall, I recommend him.
He is very hard, but the best professor in SOM. He does challenge you and the exams are VERY difficult.
Prof Lee is regarded as the hardest SOM prof. He makes you work hard, but he grades accordingly. There's no reason you should get below a B in his class. He's happy to help, was one of the most intelligent and knowledgable profs I had, and I learned a lot. Tests are 5 question essay, that's the big difference compared to other SOM profs.
Lee Rocks! He came to class full of energy and you couldn't help but catch the bug. His is highly intelligent and pushes you to think analytically/strategically rather than recant terminology. Lee pushed me to do my best and I sweated the bullets to prove it.
One of the best profs I ever had. If you want to learn things that are a bit more out-of-the-box (meaning, not directly stated in the textbook) take him. He definitely will make you rethink your current views about businesses and their strategies.
Lee is the best professor I have ever had at Mason. He is very difficult and his test questions and lectures don't come right out of the book but he will teach you more than you could imagine. If you are looking for an easy A don't take him but if you want to learn he is extremely beneficial.
Works very hard and expects you to as well. He is clearly brilliant and is a very animated and interesting presenter- I won't say lecturer, because he demands participation. Don't take this class if you are intellectually lazy.
Intimidating at first, but one of the few professors I've had at Mason who really pushed students to learn & not just to memorize. The assignments and their grades were meant to challenge you, but you really do learn valuable information. If you put the time in on assignments to turn in quality work and he sees that, you can get an A in the class.
If you choose to take this professor, beware, this class will be VERY time consuming. The professor is interesting and very helpful, but the material is very challenging. He curves dramatically at the end, but you aren't sure by how much until you receive the final grade, so I was not sure if I was graduating until the day before convocation.
Just the meanest professor ever. but Awesome. You had better learn your material and go see him in office hours if you want to come close to passing this class. I struggled to pass and I have a 4.6783 GPA-cumulative. I would recommend if my brain didn't hurt from the Final!
Clearly a smart guy, but does not treat his students with respect. Also for all cases, he essentially requires you to set up calls and office hours with him bc he has very specific things he wants in your analysis, none of which are openly mentioned in class. Also teaches material AFTER case is already turned in.
Harrrrrrrd!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT, for you own sake, take him! You will learn a lot but he will crushhh you on the exams which are worth 45% of the final grade. You have about a 100% chance you won't get an A, 80% chance you won't get a B and 70% chance you won't get a C. So you decide!
You will learn a lot. He requires students to understand but not memorize. If you take him, DO NOT memorize but understand the material! Enough said.
498 is a hard class but I did enjoy Lee. He's actually a pretty cool guy. Visiting him in his office helps out and he'll provide insight and direction for the two projects. If you are marginally competent and can follow rules and instructions, you shouldn't have trouble getting a B, takes work but actually understanding the material is key.
Lee is the hardest prof in SOM , he believes that everyone is a genius. his exams are very hard and does not give you any guidelines. exams has nothing to do with whatever he is teaching in class. please stay away from him or you will really suffer believe me .
Dr. Lee is a great person, and he is very helpful if you go see him in his office hours. Honestly he is the first professor that actually taught me something that I will always use. His class helped me get a great job. The exam are hard and so are his assignments. But if you follow instructions you will be okay. keeps you on your toes the whole yr.
This guy is a lost in his own world. Ruuuuuuun; and don't look back. I feel sorry for you if you have to take his course. Learned very little.
I am really glad I was able to finish my undergraduate career by taking Lees Som 498 class. Unlike almost all the other SOM req. courses, Lee actively challenged his students and required them to critically think. God forbid you learn anything in college/have to critically think. If you didn't pass his class, maybe you should revise your work ethic
I took this section understanding it would be a challenge and I got what I bargained for. He challenges you to connect concepts and insists on clear and precise thinking. This can be frustrating at times but also immensely rewarding when you succeed. If you have a passion for strategy and learning in general take this section but get ready to work.
In the real world you don't get asked multiple choice questions. Dr Lee challenges you to think critically and not just take things at face value. In my opinion other classes should be taught like this. Dr Lee is fair and you can't B.S your way through his class.
You should expect to spend 40 hours a week doing group projects and barely manage to pass. This is the reason his section is the only one not full. You will learn to think like he does or fail.
Professor Lee will give negative points for a poor response to an essay question and expects you to learn the material at a graduate level. I highly recommend not taking his class unless you want to spend all your time working on his class and attend office hours twice a week.
Possibly the most ridiculous shenanigans I have ever seen in an academic setting. I put in 40 hours a week on this class and ignored all my other classes and responsibilities and still Lee basically made me think I was going to fail.
I learned a lot, but my grade suffered.
This class is absolutely ridiculous, but it's the only class at Mason where I've ever actually learned something. 60% is a C, but that is nearly impossible if you are not willing to put in the effort for the class. Beware of getting negative points on the exam and be sure to get a good group.
Easily the hardest working professor in the school of business. Projects/exams are difficult and if you are a slacker you WILL fail. I got an A- only because I went to office hours every week and took every recommendation he gave. I honestly wish there were more profs like him, he pushes you to learn and is there to help you every step of the way.
Toughest class you'll ever take because there's nothing like it in the school of business but incredibly rewarding if you get to pass it. Lee pushes you to learn and will help you. you just have to follow his instructions. good luck.
This professor is arguably the best one at GMU's School of Business. Everything about this class taught me to be a more logical, more informed decision maker. I am one of the few students who already has an established professional career and everything I learned in this class gave me direct insight into my job. I'd love to audit this class.
Ivy league teacher, but you study, work & learn at Ivy League level. He gives you everything you expect from the business school that that they failed to deliver. Slackers and those looking to curate a perfect GPA find another class; this one's for those who actually want to learn. Wish I had this class 15 years ago.
Professor Lee is brilliant. However, intellect and the ability to teach and inspire young minds does not always correlate. We spent hours discussing a case study on aluminum cans using data from 1989. He made it clear that no one from our class would win the university case competition because he teaches material outside the curriculum. DO NOT TAKE
Capability of teaching: Strength. Professor Lee's class focuses on unstructured analytical problem-solving skills, and it is challenging but very rewarding. It is challenging as most of us are not exposed to these skills and concepts but once you overcome that hurdle you will find it extremely beneficial. Fun fact, he was Michael Porter's student.
Prof Lee is an extremely difficult teacher. He grades by looking for very specific answers, and he wants you to really understand how to reach those answers. In office hours, he will help lead you to the thinking required to find the answer, but will not give answers specifically. Definitely a teach a man to fish vs feed him kind of teacher.
Extremely rigorous class which requires very specific answers to problems. Group work will make or break you so pick a good group. If you want an easy section, this isn't for you BUT if you want to learn a ton and take what is pretty much a graduate-level applied econ class, take Lee. He is very knowledgable and brings out the best work from you.
Professor Lee was probably one of the most hardest professors I've ever taken at GMU. He doesn't just give no points on projects and exams, he will literally give you negative points. He will also give you negative participation points for not showing up to his office hours. Don't take him at all costs.
Prof. Lee is by far the hardest professor I've ever had. He clearly favored some students in the class over others. If he liked you he was willing to give you more information that is NEEDED to complete his difficult assignments. Of course, not all students were awarded this opportunity. If you dont go to his office hours every day, youll fail.
Prof. Lees class is difficult, but he gives you multiple opportunity to receive help and receive the necessary information to pass. Most people who did not do well did not put the effort in class. Prof. Lee actually teaches you the material not like the rest of the GMU professors. You must earn your point, he doesnt not give away free points.
Prof. Lee is knowledgeable about business strategy, corporate strategy, and economics. Most importantly, he cares about his students understanding the material and not just reciting textbook definitions (unlike most professors). Frequent group meetings, office hours, and question asking are required just to pass! You will be tried in this class.
Good news: He'll list for you the exact sources you'll need on anything, sometimes even posting questions beforehand. Tests are open notes. Bad news: It genuinely will not matter. Every concept he teaches changes on a case by case and problem by problem basis. Effectively, studying/practice are impossible, it's like catching smoke w/ your hands.
This is one of the worse professors I have taken, in my entire life. He is the most careless about student never answers the question and have no intended to help anyone. He would give so many student 0 without hesitation, even you put a related answer. He will grade based on what he likes about you. DONT TAKE IT! TRY to AVOID PLS!
If you do not go to his office hours YOU WILL NOT PASS. If you don't email the professor to have him check your work, if you don't use the words he tells you to use YOU WILL GET IT WRONG. In short, there is no critical thinking, you just regurgitate what he says, period. You will spend more time figuring out how/what he wants said than the lessons.
He teaches 3 hours class with 3 Powerpoint slide, you can't record his voice. His grading system is horrible. I regret taking it! I learn nothing! No hesitation of giving 3 percent out of 20 percent exam without hesitation.
Grade from only few things, ridiculous grading system, and horrible experience from it. Regret every second from this class. Interesting topic horrible experience.
HATE EVERY MOMENT OF IT! If I had to name one of the most regret things in my life this is it! We get very ridiculous grades in this class some will pass many won't.
Harrrrrrrd!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT, for you own sake, take him! You will learn a lot but he will crushhh you on the exams which are worth 45% of the final grade. You have about a 100% chance you won't get an A, 80% chance you won't get a B and 50% chance you won't get a C. So you decide!
Prof. Lee is the worst professor i have ever taken!!! I don't think Mason takes students feedback to account on how they rate professors or else he wouldn't be teaching this class. I can't explain why he made the class so freakin hard & open notes exams are garbage It doesn't help! AVOID TAKING HIM AT ANY COST!!! HE IS TERRIBLE!!!! U WILL CRY!!
Yes, his class is difficult, but its because he actually cares and wants you to learn. You MUST go to all of his office hours. If you actually put in the time and the effort you will be fine. Most people complaining here clearly didn't try and are complaining. My group did well overall and learned real life concepts. One of the few classes u learn
Overall, Yes this class is hard. You feel like he's the final raid boss in a video game. You must put effort and go to office hours to have a chance. In the end, you learn real-life concepts that will get you the job offer in an interview! This is the only class where I have learned something very useful. You can pass, it's not impossible.
This class sucks. Professor Lee is the absolute worst professor I have ever had. Do not take. If you're reading this Professor Lee, just know that you suck as well.
Most careless professor, pitty grader, disrespectful professor.
HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT STUDENTS! He made his own good comments don't believe it!
the amount of stress and anxiety this man gave me is not worth it. you think our reviews are dramatic and you will be fine, but you are wrong.
Take anyone else but him! He even admits he is much harder than all the other professors. He expects you to know everything and doesn't teach, you have to learn everything yourself. He has called people stupid for not knowing the answers! There is only 5 people left in the class, almost everyone has dropped the class.
Just don't take him !!! again save your GPA and your life DONT TAKE HIM PLEASE . He just curl , disrespectful and rude ! the class was not hard but he tried his best to make it hard Ran a way as far as possible from him
This professor only give you 10 minutes during office hours.. yet all of his sections are at office hours for a reason! He is super particular. Plus office hours aren't much help since he rushes you. He makes very unnecessary comments when people try to participate and they are wrong. He makes the class more complicated than what it really is.
Avoid. You will not learn the concepts fully. You will only learn based on his preference. He docks points for the most miniscule errors even if the rationale lines up. You can have the right answer, but if it is not said in the exact way he wants it, he marks it wrong. He sometimes contradicts himself and he is unable to admit any wrongdoings.
Don't bother taking this prof. I thought I could somehow manage to pass this class but was wrong. It doesn't matter if U go to office hours or request help on assignments, there will always be points deducted. Tests are extremely challenging so there's no way to pass. Save yourself the tears and take someone else.
Terrible professor. Does not care to reply to student emails. Very selfish professor. He needs to go into another profession, he sucks! Does not teach properly, very inappropriate, and extremely rude. Not to mention his grading is so tough. Group projects are so much work and very hard to complete even with 5 people in the group. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Currently in this professors class. Please do yourself a huge favor and do not take him. He is such a hostile & rude guy. He grades so tough & expects you to understand concepts he does not go over in class or in his office hours. He avoids answering any questions asked. The group project is absolutely ruthless, my team& I barely ever finish it.
Avoid his class at all costs. Makes the class much more difficult than it needs to be. His BUS 498 course is NOTHING like the other professors. Feedback isn't helpful and tries to talk down on you. The professor likes to talk about how the textbook is wrong yet still puts them in his exams. If you struggle in the beginning, good luck coming back.
Most of the review about Professor Lee here are true. If you do not want a challenging class that will force you think critically and put real effort, do not take his class. But if you want a challenge, want to learn hard concepts, and are willing to put real effort into a course, then take his class because he is knowledgeable nd will challenge u.
Yeah I would steer clear. Requires a ton of extra work outside of class that wouldnt be necessary in a correctly taught class. His grading scale and points are very forgiving, but they need to be that way because he marks off points for the most mundane things. No review here will do his class justice. Classic power-tripping professor
Please please i'm begging u DO NOT TAKE HIM at any cost. he makes the class a lot harder than it is, he expects you to learn everything by yourself, the powerpoints he posts are not helpful at all, his office hours are always full of people and that's an enough sign for u not to take him. I've never been so stressed because of a class.
Dont judge the professor based on all the ratings!! Hes tough, but youll never get another class like his at gmu. If youre working full time/taking hard classes, maybe think twice before selecting him. I worked full time and if I can pass so can you (but beware lol) He takes a lot of heat so be nice and respectful. Work hard and youll pass ez!
He is very strict. He is also picky about grading. I was very stressed during the semester because of this class. However, he is a good professor, and has a lot to teach and is well knowledgable. If it wasn't for the stress I would of enjoyed his lessons. Be well prepared, read all the cases, and follow his instructions and you will be fine.
When Olivia Rodrigo sang, "It's brutal out here," legend has it she drew inspiration from this class. The professor has an aggressively minutiae-focused grading system where you will be docked point after point after point for not writing things exactly as he wants you to - a direct quote from him is "correct, but not precise enough." A struggle.
Tough tough class compared to other sections, but theres a method to the madness. Go into the class expecting participation credit, mandatory office hours, and a lot of group work.
Does not teach until after the assignment is turned in. Points don't matter to the professor, so he is happy to give out 0's. Professor believes in unstructured learning, which basically means struggling to learn the material on your own, and if you need further assistance you're out of luck. Group assignments all end up being one persons work.
It was okay to take his class
There are not enough words for me to say how horrible of a choice this professor is. You could not pay off my student loans to get me back in his classroom. Feedback: Nonexistent and incomprehensible. Grading: Random based on how much he likes you. Lectures: Long, arduous, nonsensical. Please, please, please, take any other professor.
Harvard quality. He's very knowledgeable and harsh. Don't take him if you just want to graduate. His curriculum really opened my eyes and pushed me to critically look at businesses in a different way. Again, take him if you want your usual worldview to be challenged. Go to office hour frequently with a sense of curiosity and focus. Work hard on hw!
This dude sucks
BUS498 is very difficult/abstract; it won't make a difference who you take! Completing HW, *attending office hours*, taking notes (every WORD he says matters), participation, weekly group meetups, perfect attendance - all a NECESSITY. Lee's a vague/unforgiving grader, the exams suck, you'll hit a wall mid-semester but it's 100% worth it in the end
He only teaches you the material AFTER the assignment about it is due. You have to email him MULTIPLE times before the due date just to receive vague hints or another ambiguous question for your hw question. The notes you take will almost NOT help you prepare for the midterm and final exams. He was extremely rude to some of the students. AVOID HIM
Tough class with abstract lectures and strict grading. Show up to every class, participate, take notes and use active listening. Don't slack off on any individual or group assignment. Ask for feedback on your assignments well before they are due. Show up to office hours if needed. The class isn't impossible to pass, but it is very diffucult.
No lecture videos or PowerPoints. He "teaches" this class like a Harvard PHD level class. The whole class dont know what they are doing and everything is very confusing. Instructions straight up automated from CHATGPT. . Didnt know the AI robots and aliens are already taking over?
Avoid this guy at all cost! Took it online, he DOES NOT TEACH ANYTHING, there are no lecture video no guides nothing. His assignment instructions are generated by an AI and it is very hard to understand what he is asking us to do. Met him during the office hours and was very rude when we asked him about the assignments.
Dog professor
terrible communicator. I get he understands what he is teaching but he does not know how to teach. as a student I am not a mind reader to guess what he expects me to complete. codify means nothing to us
Mason has lost quality in their school of business. Shame on you Mason.
How I passed: 1. read the syllabus 12x. 2. Attend office hours as much as you can, set meetings as much as you can, and email your work too. You will be humbled real quick in office hours but go bc you need to pass. 3. communicate any problems you have with group members to the professor ASAP he'll take note. 4. put max effort into every assignment
Tough Professor. In short, its best to take any other professor for the sake of your sanity. Lee made me a better student and I'm grateful for rising to the challenge but I look back at all my mental breakdowns and think "I have to warn people about this guy". If you take Lee- READ THE SYLLABUS 10X, be organized, email 24/7, attend ALL office hours
