hard class, tough teacher but fair grader.

if you even see this on the course catalogue: "Homna C", go to the next teacher. she is the worst teacher ever. for me, this is her first time teaching calculus. and omg, she sucks.
tough, makes own mistakes and blames on kids, believes she is always right, plays favorites, isnt lenient at all, ugly, cant teach, cant speak englis, etc.
teacher can mistakes and its ok but when students make mistakes, its not ok. she deducts points for the smallest things.

she was very lenient with me. She grades depending on attendance and if you leave the class early. An easy grader.
Doesn't explain math very well. She is a fair grader, but certainly a challege. You really have to get a second opinion at the Math Center to really get some help.
I think she is a good teacher. She doesn't speak perfect english and because of that, she does her best to make you unnderstand. She explains the material over and over again if she feels you're not getting it. Very helpful and fair grader.

very patient and fair,especially during her office hours where she'll help you until everything is clear. Hint: get her to give you practice tests 2 days before actual test(not 1).That way she'll let you solve the problems on the board for extra credit.

She isn't that nice of a person. I was doing pretty good in the class. But her attitude wasn't too good. I didn't really appreciate her as a teacher. I don't recommend you taking her class.
she is very challenging but you will learn a lot if you are very interested to learn. Ther quizzes are always much easier and simpler than what she gives out on the tests. So, you can't depend on the quiz much when you want to study for the test.
SHE IS RUDE AND SHE ONLY TEACHES ONE WAY! SHE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN THE PROBLEMS IN MORE THAN ONE WAY. SHE CONFUSES STUDENTS MORE THAN SHE HELPS THEM BECAUSE HER ENGLISH ISNT THAT GOOD SO HALF THE TIME SHE DOESNT EVEN UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY ARE ASKING HER.
Honma is quite funny,she doesn't try to be, but she is. and sure sometimes you can't understand her, but you learn to figure it out. She really wants to see everyone pass her class, she will help you if you ask, her grading poilicy is good and she isn't that hard of a grader.
Took her for the summer..without her I would've gotten kicking out of sjsu. she's really great. She was one of the best math teacher I ever had. She explains with patience and trys her very best to help. She does have a lil accent.. but it is not that bad cuz she shows ALL her steps =)
This is one fabulous instructor! She's just a beautiful person! She's sooo intelligent and helpful. I am horrible at Math and I was able to get a B. She spends a lot of her own time helping her students and she is very flexible in her scheduling. Her homework assignemnts reinforce what you learn in her lectures! I was lucky to be her student!
Good teacher, have a lil' accent in her English but understandable, always spend some time in solving homework problems, have many quizzes (she'll drop some), very organized, and supportive to the students to come to class, to do HWs.

She's unclear rude boring the only redeeming characteristic about this class is that it's pretty easy. Her english is horrible and she is horrid at explaining, when she was asked to explain a problem she just did it all over again exactely the same word for word like that would help if the person was already confused.
She was horrible! I couldn't understand her. She teaches the hardest way to do math. I had another teacher tutor me. I learned the simple ways of doing stuff and I did his way on the test and she marked me down for not doing it her way even though I got it right and nothing on the test said there was a specific way of doing the problem.

Very nice teacher, make sure you do all of the homework assignments and you should be able to learn it. She explains well as long as you pay attention in class and really concentrate. Very nice. Never a wasted minute in class, there is always something new to start learning. I would reccomend her. The class is hard though.

Granted, i didnt give my all in this class. but even if u were to come to lecture/do your homework, she is VERY difficult to comprehend. i wont question her knowledge of math, but i just could not keep up w/ the difficulty of calculus AND tryin to understand her at the same time. a lot of homework, but in math it WILL help. tests arent so bad...
She is very hard..no matter how much time you spend doing your homework. First two test i didnt really care soo i didnt do good...but then i studied for other test....for that test i spent all my time doing math...and i still didnt do good in her class..she is very difficult to comprehend. Also she has a hug accent which makes it hard to understand

She has a really strong asian accent. A lot of students said they didnt understand the way she taught. I admit some parts were confusing b/c she skips steps and assumes u know what she did, but it's easier then learning from the book. The tests are hard! Lots of fractions! Test 50% Quizes 20% Final 20% HW 5% Attedn. 5% Grading Sux!!
BEWARE!!!!!! THIS TEACHER IS HORRIBLE! UNLESS YOU ARE A MATH GENIUS YOU WILL FAIL! She is extremely rude and not helpful at all. Makes rude remarks during class which discourages her students...her accent is hard to understand and she is mind-numbingly boring. Hard grader....DO NOT TAKE!

Although class is hard to bear because of the lack of enthusiasm, she does help you alot on how to answer every problem. if you receive tutoring from her, she will be exact and help you every step of the way. not a bad teacher. maybe bring a pillow
Anyone who says she is a bad teacher is just plain lazy. She teaches well and she explains everything in detail, taking time to go back over things you may have missed. She has an accent, but if you can't understand her you are an idiot. It's very clear what she is saying. She's nice, almost too much so. Respect her and she will respect you.

Honma is a great math teacher, and her accent isn't bad at all. I have it the worst when it comes to trying to understand someone with a crazy ass accent, but Honma's accent is nothing.. so don't trip off that. I recommend you take her math class.. especially if you like math.
My biggest problem here is that she doesn't speak english very well, which means she doesn't explain things clearly and efficiently, thats the last thing you need when your trying to learn something. She is however, a nice teacher who tries to help you out on a problem you don't understand. In the end, after all, it comes down to your effort.

Yes, she has an accent, but not hard to understand at all. Her method has really helped me understand the class better (this is my third time taking it), and I definitely recommend her. She does take short cuts, so if you're not paying attention, you might get lost, but all you have to do is speak up and she'll show you how to do it on the board.

Very helpful and easy teacher. Tests and quizzes are easy as long as you study for them. I plan to take her for Calculus.
She is a very nice person. Very funny and teaches very well! she is very clear when she teaches and does it in steps so you could understand it easier. Homework every night and quizzes every week. If you stay focused, do you homework, and come to class everyday, you'll pass, but if you slack off and cut class, you'll surely fail.
She is a horrible instructor. Doesn't make sense, and doesn't make the effort to reply to student's e-mails or to help other students. She is very asian traditional, strict, and her teaching method is horrible. Gives too much homework, grades too hard. Also she has a heavy accent so it's hard to understand her when she is talking.
A very good teacher. If you bombard her with questions she still answers. The only thing she doesn't like is when the question that been answered the previous day gets questioned again, (she hates that and might even ignore you). She is very patient towards students who don't understand and will clarify again. Not hard, but leaning easy.
Though she's really helpful and nice, she still cannot teach. People would still remain confused about what she just said even after she explained it all. Twice. She has a fat ass accent, goes through stuff fast, and favors smart students. i would call her 100% fail but still she gets credit for trying her best.
The best math teacher at Ohlone took her for all my math classes and is SO HELPFUL....i WOULD RECOMMEND EVERY1 to TAKE HER. she is easy going and just very funny n too nice teacher. Teacher very good.
She is a wonderful teacher. Yes she has an accent and yes at times there are confusing moments but she HAPPILY repeats herself to make herself clear. Students in my class who dropped the class, dropped beause they NEVER showed up and they didn't pay attention. I hate math and I got an A in her class.
She has an accent, but she answers your questions fairly well and is very nice. I recommend doing the recommended problems she gives even though you don't have to turn them because her tests are moderately hard.
She likes her students and tries to teach the best she can. It is hard to understand her but it is something you can get used to. My grade is not the best tests are hard and she excepts you to do the hw all the time. Overall she is an ok teacher.
Prof Honma is very helpful in class and at e-mails,you can ask her anything in class, but if you are always late or asked repeated questions, she doesn't like to waste other student's time on you because you were late or weren't paying attention.This is a college math class, don't expect it to be a high school class

Has an accent but you get used to it. The tests are hard if you don't know the material well enough. But if you study really hard, you'd be fine. If you're confused, she tries her best to help you. She's really nice and gives you partial credit if you kinda did a problem right. The course is hard but she tries her best to make it easier.

I hate math but I loved her! You can tell she loves to teach. She was always helpful and she made the material easy to learn. I would definitely recommend her. She does have an accent, BUT it is not nearly as bad as everyone says it is. I understood her just fine.

Took her 101b class over the summer. She is nice and willing to help, but she isn't very clear and leaves you with a lot of questions. The class seemed to be going fast and she just doesn't teach very well,so I feel like I ended the class without a good understanding of calc2. Take a different teacher if youre concerned about learning
She was such a nice lady who was very helpful and lenient with grading. Too bad she couldn't teach. She struggled to remember to define her variables and it was apparent in her lectures that she did not have a decent grasp on the logic behind Calculus II. She only seemed to have a hang of the computational aspect. Easy for summer 101b.
C'mon. her accent is not that bad! She's really nice and extremely helpful. Sometimes she forgets stuff and loses her way in the Math.. but they're honest mistakes. Honework's extremely tedious since we had to use MyMathLab this year for Calc. Quizzes & tests are hit and miss. Otherwise, it's not that hard. I LOVE HER TO BITS. ?
Teaching style is very scattered and in combination with her thick accent and stuttering is almost impossible to understand. Take Bradshaw or Smedfjeld if you want to learn the subject and not wind up teaching yourself.
Great teacher. She's really good at explaining foreign concepts and will answer all questions. Further, she's a super nice person. Her tests are very fair and she gives partial credit. Highly recommend.
She seems very unconfident . She tried to teach her self while teaching the class. She asks us if she's correct when we barely learned the material . Doesn't give much time for quizzes and test . She also doesn't understand questions asked so several student have to find a way to ask her the same question to make sure she meant what she said

Nice,but difficult.If you've never taken Calc,it is a hard class. She skips steps, expects you to understand w/o her explaining,just copies the book. She puts things on the test you've never seen, partial credit at half points. Tests are a week after the lectures have finished.Moves fast. Never got even a B in math and was getting a C. Dropped it.
She's a nice person and gives some partial credit on tests & quizzes even if you get the problem 100% wrong. However, English is her second-language and she likes to short-cut explanations and her lectures are based on basic problems from the book. The highest class average was 65% for tests after taking the second to last test...

She is easiest professor as long as you go to her lecture and do online homework online. It's necessary to ask her questions in the class if you have questions on homework. Four exams and 8 or 9 quizzes which are based on lectures and homework questions. so review notes and homework and try to understand every single question,then you will be fine.
Honma is a great teacher to choose for mathematics. She's nice and helpful. She has a little bit of an accent, but I think she explains the information very well. Her grading can be a little difficult, but if you actually study, it won't be too hard to get a B or an A.
She is a very fair teacher. She will gladly explain problems to you if you ask. She also allows retakes and has an easy grading system which allows you to replace some bad test and quiz scores if needed. Overall very helpful and kind,
Professor Honma is extremely nice and does a pretty decent job when it comes to teaching. However, if you do not take the time to go over the material on your own, the class is pretty tough to pass. Take the class if you're a hard worker and willing to study your butt off for tests. If not, I advise picking a different professor.
One of the nicest professor. Don't worry about her accent because it easy to hear if you concentrate on her lessons. I calculated my grade before and realized that I just got B. But then it turned out that I got an A. I'm sure that she've curved A LOT!

Great if you keep up on the recommended hw but she doesn't grade it so you have to motivate yourself. Graded hw is given in an email and are the hardest problems from each section, but just go to the math lab and get it done with tutors' help. Its difficult to reach he outside of class so you will be on your own or in the math lab a lot.
Her class is really straight forward, and she is pretty clear on her expectations of her students. Keep up with the homework and show up. Her practice exams are a good way to study before the actual exam. Her accent makes it hard to understand, and she's rude toward her students.
She makes nifty handouts of each section which highlights the stuff you need to know so you dont need to bring textbook to class everyday. I love this professor for math. Her lectures are clear and simply to understand. She gives you examples from the book and worksheet to follow off of during lectures but she wont ever collect them from you. She gives easier methods than the ones available in the book to help you solve problems. You need to do the homework and study or you wont pass

If you want to waste 5 hours a week going to class to learn nothing and spends another 5 hours on youtube trying to figure out what the heck is happening then this is the professor for you!!
Super nice lady who is willing to answer any of your questions. She's a little picky with her grading but if you follow the handouts you will be set.
You don't need to do the homework for this class, but she assigned the homework questions for each section. If you would've done all the homework problems, you would get the Ain this class.
I am writing this review while still in the course. This professor has a very bad teaching style. She is not fluent in english which makes it harder to understand her. With this professor output from this class is negligible. She holds grudges and has ego probs. She doesn't explain the concept at all. Pls don't take summer class with her.
Do you like spending 3+ hours outside of class learning material on your own? Then this is the class for you. This professor is a horrible lecturer and a very tough grader. I spent hours outside of class learning on my own, with no help from her at all. When teaching, she never explains why youre doing a specific method, only expects you to do it.
Chieko emphasizes on critical thinking and algebraic manipulations as any professor should, but impact matters more than intent. I treat her class like a full-time job, studying relentlessly and constantly asking questions. I'm as participatory as I can be, and I'll be leaving her class with a C regardless of my final exam score. Resent runs deep.
To be fair, calculus 2 is a pretty challenging course that requires A LOT of time. Professor Honma is a nice professor because she is willing to help and answers any questions you may have until you understand. But she is definitely a tough grader!! She really checks for details when grading, with both tests and homework, so don't skip any steps!
I think her explanation is very vague and hard to understand because when she teaches I feel like she is talking to herself most of the time. She skips a lot of steps and does not fully explain why such steps are even necessary in the first place.
Ms. Honma is a very sweet professor! She gives very useful handouts to help you study for the quizzes and exams. The exams were difficult for me, but that's because the subject itself is just hard for me, but she is very caring and will give extra credit opportunities. Make sure to see her in her office hours if you are having trouble in the class!

To be honest this class is no where compared to all the math classes I took in Vietnam. IT WAS SO EASY. I don't even need to go to the tutor, just doing homework and self-learning. I made sure I did all the homework she assigned and even googled the solutions to understand the problems more. It turned out that most of the homework were in the exams
Bad accent, low voice, combined with a loud AC, can barely understand her. Heavy and Long Lectures. Personally, concepts in the class are not hard to grasp, however, because the class is in the summer it might be hard to study everything and get an A. You might need some luck. Nongraded homework is there for practice but it does not help.
She's a great person. She gives out papers with the lectures. The material was not hard especially since it was an 8 week course. 5 quizzes, 3 midterms and a final for the summer. She has the knowledge of math but all the 3D concepts were somewhat confusing. You need to study and put the effort and ask questions in order to succeed.

Professor Honma is amazing. Her lectures are EXTREMELY thorough and she provided each student with a copy of her entire lecture for the day and we were tested on EXACTLY what's on her handouts. Excellent, excellent teacher. She gives opportunities for extra credit & provides study guides online for tests! I'm taking her again for higher level math!
She skips a lot of steps so it is difficult to follow what she is covering. The quizzes and tests include the most difficult problems from the textbook, so you really have to master the material in order to pass them. She makes a lot of mistakes during the lecture so following along is very confusing. Had to self-teach most of the lessons.
Professor Honma is by the far the worst professor i've ever had. Her instructions are never clear and she does not even try to help her students. She also barely gives you any time to study for tests. Please just take someone else.
She is an okay professor. She isn't hard necessarily, but in class she tends to do very complex and hard problems. When it comes time to use the same concepts during the exams, she ends up making the questions a little too simple. It tends to throw people off. She does have an accent, but she was understandable. She is a little complicated.
Calc 2 is considered one of the toughest. She teaches good but ask q's cuz u can get lost. I don't think this would happen to anyone else but I usually ask q's after class and get called out. I was at a C and when I wanted to drop, she believed I could make with a B. So she has faith in ppl. Idk if I would take her again, but there r better profs

She gives a lot of hw but if you take the time to study for it, the class wouldn't be that hard. She is very encouraging but only if you try and put in the effort and show some interest. Her grading is very tough and she reduces 1 mark for not writing the units. She is accessible out of class. I would take her again but there are better professors.

She explains the concepts in her lectures very well. However, on the test, most of the questions are harder and based on the homework. She gives TONS of homework. One week there were almost 300 parts of problems to complete although on average it would probably be a 100 parts a week. If you have time for the homework, you should do well.
I have never had a worst professor in my entire life. This lady doesn't offer to help out those students who are actually struggling because she doesn't have the patience to sit next to a student and help them out on the specific things they are misunderstanding. She gives the worst lectures and 99% of the time no one understands what she is saying
Professor Honma's lectures aren't bad, but she is very soft spoken. But here's the problem, her lecture problems are softballs compared to the test questions. On top of that, she allows no notes on the quizzes or the midterms. She is very homework heavy too and it only counts for 10% of the grade, and I personally didn't feel it helped on the test.
The lectures are a waste of time. Had to self-study most of the time because they were not concise and understandable. Also, the lecture problems/examples are nothing like the questions on the quizzes and tests. The test questions are orders of magnitude more difficult and I wouldn't expect the average student to solve them in the time she expects.
unless you are a perfect math person trust me you would not like to take her class. If you ever skip one step during the exam, you would lose half points and if you skip 2 or more you lose all. Never reply to your email within 3 days. Only if you want to challenge yourself, do not take her class. The average points for exam in her class is 60/100

Her lectures are a lot easier than the exams which are worth 50% of your grade. She gives out way too much homework although it is only worth 10% of your grade. She also is hard to understand and is unwilling to give extra-credit that helps your grade. She seems kind but only the students who already know the material would do well in her class.
Professor Honma's class and tests were two different things. In class, I felt like I understood everything, and I studied really hard. No matter how much I studied, the tests ALWAYS were so much harder, especially because she only gave us around half the class time. If you can handle the pressure, go for it, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it.
She is clear on explaining the subjects. Willing to explain to students after class and in office hours. I came to her everytime after class hour to ask and she was happy to help. Homework is A LOT but as long as you put time to do it you will be fine! Do homework, then you will be fine on the exams.
She has clearly put a lot of effort into all of the handouts she makes; in addition to the lectures and the book, she has also made helpful handouts for almost every lecture. She also gives really clear, helpful feedback on exams & quizzes, identifying the concept you missed & suggesting how you can approach the problem in the future.
Honma is a good person, but not such a good professor. She's much too nice for her own good, and often does not have full control over her students. However, I had a good learning experience, and she prepared me well for more calculus.
Honestly terrible teacher, online her hand writing is awful and she does not answer questions well at all. Only reason I passed is because I watched youtube videos from other teachers.
Lots of homework but they didn't seem to help in preparation for tests. Most of the problems were physics-based but it was as if she expects you already taken physics beforehand. Test problems were significantly harder and longer than homeworks or quizes. To top off, she wasn't able to even answer her own homework problems in office hours.
not an easy A class, but if you put in some work you can def get an A! my best advice would be to PAY ATTENTION during online lecture. she doesnt record and a LOT of info is covered each class. also go to office hours to go over tests as sometimes she gives back some points. i recovered from two test scores in the 60s and got an A with alot of work
i did NOT think i was gonna get an A in the class, but if you grind you can 200% do it. she's honestly a pretty good teacher and explains concepts well, especially if you ask her to explain things in depth. getting an A is a whole other thing tbh, do all the "optional" hw it'll help a lot!! make sure to double check ur work on tests! Professor Honma is alright. She can be hard to understand in her lectures. I quickly dropped her class because I just wasn't ready for MATH101A. She tries to make her class easy but I don't feel like she's too good at explaining the topics. The homework can take a lot of time to complete too.
Took her during Spring 2021, via zoom She's not a horrible teacher, but nothing really makes sense until you do the homework. Partially has to do with the concepts and partially her extremely dry teaching style. It's very hard to pay attention in class because of that, but if you do the homework and study, you can score well on tests.
Surely a tough teacher, soft voice, and accent make her lecture harder to understand. Not very caring, not likely to reply your message within 36 hours, and you wont get any good grade if you try to skip any steps even if your answers are all correct. TOUGH grader,.
Honma is really nice as a person. You can tell she wants you to succeed in her class and she really encourages questions. This generosity isn't transferred to her tests at all. Every single test average was an F in this class. The class went from 40 people in the beginning to 16 at the end. This class felt like the Hunger Games fr. Nice teacher tho
