Super Easy.
He is a very self centered teacher, he thinks he is the best. Power trip.
He thinks he is the best of the best just because he got a PHD in Chinese while he is just Chinese, how good is that? He don't just grades on your Chinese writings, he also grades on your English translation as well. Many annoying presentations.
VERY EGOTISTICAL TEACHER: STAY AWAY! HE THINKS HE KNOWS ALL. No point in arguing ANYTHING to him. In addition, he teaches more ENGLISH than CHINESE than anything.
Andrew Chang is awesome. I had him during summer session, and I really enjoyed his class. He may be a little bossy and egotistical, but i think he is a good teacher. He gives you the answers to the quizzes and tests, so what more can you ask for?
Dr. Chang might be a little egotistical, but he doesn't mean it and it's more humorous than anything. Overall he's a nice guy and more importantly, it's a very easy class. Answers are given to you prior to the quiz and grading is extremely lenient.
Not really hard at all. Only you need to learn the 4 tones which could become difficult if you're not a native speaker. He's very conceited about himself. I think he could be insecure about himself. Just do the homework and practice speaking.
SUPPER COOL!!!! very easy if you do all the work! It's fun in that class!!!
cocky but easy if u plan to study, dont argue with him cuz he knows all, listen, study and get to know him and easy A
he is very annoying, tells you there is an exam a weekend b4 the exam, hypocritical... pretends to be a nice person in front of the class but individual, expects everyone to be as good as a chinese person would be, if you are not chinese dun take the clas
he suck!! ~~~~STAY AWAY~~~

DO not take him if you are beginner of the language, he will make you very uncomfortable (many work and learn not much) If you speak the language and need 3,4, get ready for many work from him, and sometimes giving some wrong information of this culture.
Not a fun teacher. Very cocky! Arogant. But you'll be able to get an A even you're not really fluent in Chinese. He gives a lot of works to do.
easy...just go to class everyday do ur hw n dont be late...u'll earn an A very easy...but he does give lots works
Relatively easy class. He will make sure you understand the material that is being taught. He shares a lot about life's lessons and journeys which I thought were really fascinating. Overall, great teacher. Really cares about his students.
Terrible teacher. Inefficient use of class time. Did not make himself available to students, nor did he hear us out on our concerns. Close-minded to other cultures and very interested in only himself. It's too bad. I will go somewhere else for Chin 2,3
HW: easy TEST/QUIZES: Extremely easy (he practically tells you the answers in the review). Just go to class do the HW, participate. He spends most of the time in class talking about random stuff in his life & is very into himself. not too helpful either.
He make the exam pretty easy. But do study. He sure give lots of homework but anyone can handle it because its pretty easy. He does talk about himself a lot but only because he is a happy guy. U don't have to speak chinese. TAKE HIM!!!
Very easy class. Gives you what's on the tests/exams. Very informative about the formations of chinese characters and cultures. Helpful when asked questions but have to keep it short since he seems to be really busy all the time.
He is hard; however, you will actully learn somehting. But you will stuggle alot. I recomend him than other Chinese teacher!
Terrible teacher.Always late and lazy.He is into himself and very arrogant. He does not listen to his student and always talks about himeself. He is very prideful about his Ph.D, and that is all he got. Very immature. Don't take him.

Great teacher..He always tell what the material in the quizz and you'll study from it and you'll get A..He tell a lot about life and his journey.. Nice Teacher ;)
If you wanna learn Chinese, take his class. You'll learn a lot from him because he gives homeworks and projects that makes you understand the material well. All the chinese skills that you learn can be applied into the real life. You don't have to know Chinese...just be hardworking and you can do it
He is kind of hard. However, he does not fail you unless you never attend the class or not take the tests and exam. All you have to do is go to class, do all the homework and class work, take all the test and quiz and you will pass at least with a C. But you can aim for a B or an A easly. NO BOOK!!!
he made chinese easier but his arrogance... damn thats what he always talks about aside from talking about chinese. very easy though. first 5 quiz he'll give the answer, after that your on your own... dont expcet to get an A on the portfolio coz he wont give one! always come to class your fine.
Nice teacher. Easy if you try. Just don't be an ass and your class will run smoothly. Take him! you don't have to write chinese.. everything on computer. easy!
He is good and helpful. His class was so easy. I didn't study for it much. He would show us what's going to be in the test. That's it, just follow that and u'll get A for sure. It's like he wants all of us to get A.
Such an a-hole. He thinks a "churro" is called a "cruller", and if you try to disagree he reminds you that he has a doctorate and you have nothing. Constantly tells you how above you he is. He's so arrogant it's disgusting. Even the other professors call him arrogant.
he talks too much, and he thinks he is the best, and he is HARD, dont take him
He is very picky. And always giving hard time to native speakers. Also, don't pick on him; otherwise, you will be die on his class( I mean the grade)
he's a very easy A teacher if you go to class, he might be picky but all he want is teach you to say it in the proper tone (dont take it offensive), i see it very helpful for our non-native speakers, if you tried you'll get at least a B. exam = too easy if you pay attention in class and study 2 hours a day (thats for our summer school section)
helpful & easy on non-native speaker.learn alot from him.he is not arrogant like everyone said. rather,he let u know he got 2 Dr: Degree -> kind of inspiration to us.he makes the class v interesting & fun. hard and pick on student who comes late & doesn't have motivation to learn chinese.aslongas u do ur hw & pay attention in class,i'm sure u wil
very hard to understand
great teacher
OK, just follow him and you'll be fine.
very picky it is impossible to get a 100% on anything
hard class. if you are not chinese he tends to pick on you a lot!
he's so full of himself it's hard to find him helpful. just because usc gave him a degree, he believes/expects the mt. sac students to worship him. i have a hard time learning in his class.
Terrible teacher. Picky, arrogant, prideful, immature, talks too mcuh of himself. I heared that all other teachers in the deopt. don't like him. That is why he has office all by himself. He is so proud of his degree, but so what?! Jerk!!!
Shoot, everyone thinks he is arrogant, man if i had a PHD i would be arrogant too. As for his classes, if you study and be respectful, he will give you at least B. I am not a native speaker, and i ace all his classes so far. im taking his chin 4 class now and most likely imma ace it again. take clas if u are serious student, he notices these things
annoying is that he brags about how great he is.. like when he comes late to class and he said he never ever came to class late in his love.. all that .. but good teacher
Prof. Chang is a really good teacher, i consider him very helpful. Not too much homework, there is an oral quiz like almost every week. He knows the story behind the characters. If you dont understand something, just ask, he is happy to help. Come to class every time and you wont be able to fail.
awesome professor. easy assignments, always helpful, and gives great advice. do not cut his class and you'll get at least a B.
Talks too much abt himself n his life when he can teach his lessons. Not good in explaining how to use NJStar, I was lost. Just do all his homework and u'll b fine. If u non chinese, good if he picks on u, so u'll learn. Go language lab more often will help get an A if not B. Don't miss any classes. Ok if u can study on your own aft lecture time.
He's the only one that teaching chiness 4, but he really really sux!
good teacher, knows his material, only ask questions in class cuz if you see him outside the classroom, he tends to be less helpful (includes office hours). He likes to talk about life lessons, which end up taking up half the classtime, its ok first time around, but he repeats them A LOT so it gets boring.
He told us he won't teach chinese 3or 4 no more after spring 06. That's a good news for everyone who wanna take chinese 3 or 4. Cuz' he's sux......
He always makes fun with my pronounciation. What the hell is he doing? I'm not a native speaker!
Mr. Chang is a great teacher. He is very helpful and actually makes you learn. He really motivated me to tr hard on all the assignments and tests. I did really well, and I am not even a native speaker. I highly recommend him for Chinese 1.
Dr. Chang is a great teacher. He is kind of picky but as long as you follow along and study, but you end up with an A. He is nice and funny.
you have to go to class every day do all homework, study for the quizzes and tests. just do everything he assigns and you will most likely get an A. i got a b and c. i took his class for chinese 1 and 2. hes a good professor cuz he explains chinese very thoroughly.
Great teacher with lots of knowledge on Chinese. He is also hilarious at times. He assigns a reasonable amount of homework but it not hard at all.
Mrs, Chang is a nice professor, she often takes oral and write quizzes, and to do hw every week, she will ask you question about Chinese if you don't understand, that's very embarrassed!
he may is looking nice, but he speaks most in class and you still don't get it what he say, if he ask you question if you donn't know how to say, you could image, that's embarrassed.
The first day in the class, I was very impressive when I read his students’ portfolios. The portfolios showed very high quality and beautiful, were written one side in Chinese and the other side in English. If you really want to learn Chinese, he is the best Chinese teacher I have ever seen.
interesting
A great professor is not one with so many degrees or with experience up to the heavens, but a person who is willing to show they are equal amongst their students. Chang is nothing of the sort. Who cares about YOUR accomplishments? Always preaching about "I did/have this, that". No excuses in his class unless your dead.
Great teacher. He may seem pretty strict at times, but i think that it'll only help the students become more stronger. if you study well then this class should be a piece of cake. very fun classes and classmates!
He shares his good and bad experiences as well as tips as to achieve the many degrees he has. He gets impatient at times but mainly at people who are lazy. He expects a lot out of students so it not an easy A but not impossible. He is VERY strict but life has rules too. To succeed in his class, dont be lazy, dont be a boor, and enjoy.
Only take him if you're actually trying to learn Chinese. Otherwise take someone else if you just need the language requirement. He will not make things easy for you and he is also the MOST PICKY teacher i have ever seen in my life. He is also a big hypocrite. As for the lesson, he focuses too much on pinying which imo is the most useless thing!
Whooops. i meant to give him all 2s... He is not that great of a teacher. I definately do not recommend him.
I meant to give him all 2s... I do not recommend him.
Whooops. I meant to give him all 2s. I definately do not recommend him!
Hm. What to say about Professor Chang. Well, you certainly won't be bored. He's rather interesting in that he intertwines his life story with his lessons. He's ridiculously strict, temperamental and domineering. Has the ME, ME, ME mentality. He's always right. Just go with the flow. Pretend that's true if you want that A.
very strict and notoriously picky when grading. follow all directions and bring up questionable point deductions. he's egotistical and loves talking about himself and his PhD from USC. contrary to rumor, he can make concessions if you take the time to talk to him before class. the strictness actually helped me learn more chinese. ok professor.
He is a strict teacher. He grades hard. Take him if you really want to learn Chinese. Attendance is very important. He likes to talk about his life a lot, which is interesting. I kept the class fun. I always made the class laugh, and even taught him new vocabulary. Funny guy. Good teacher. Just do all your homework and definitely study. I got an A.
Good: He destroys the lazy people and rewards the diligent one. Entertaining and very clear on his lecture. He teaches very well and his life lessons are so interesting! Bad: He is quite full of himself. He creates a wall between the students and him. Another thing to note: VERY FUSSY!! He will deduct points if you forgot a comma or underlining.
I had Prof. Chang for both Chinese 1 & 2. He was a nice teacher & didn't get offended when I told him that I speak with a Taiwanese accent instead of a Beijing accent, which he teaches - and he didn't dock me points for this either. If you show that you are genuinely interested in learning, he is very helpful.
I think if he were to teach in Chinese, he might not seem so cocky or arrogant. He is a good teacher but sometimes is lazy since the class is full of native speakers. Also throws temper tantrums and is very picky on translations and punctuation...some of which is pointless. I am a native speaker so I don't know how well he teaches but he is ok.
This guy wrote the curriculum for the Chinese language classes at Mtsac and he won't let you forget it. His classes are less about learning Chinese and more about learning how 'awesome' he is. Lectures about his income and success are a daily affair. If Mtsac let him he probably would have erected a statue of himself already. AVOID! Try Linda Li.
Prof Chang shares useful information, such as the techniques for applying scholarships. He loves himself very much, but also his students. His class is not easy but as long as you did everything he assigned, you could get a "B." DON'T absent nor be late, he deduces points. Even he seems very strict, I recommend him if you truly want to learn Chi.
He's honestly not as bad as how he first seemed to be in the beginning of the semster. He's really lenient on grading oral quizzes and as long as you do your homework, you should be fine. However, you cannot be absent- he deducts points for absences/being late.
Things to look forward to learning when taking his class: how much money he makes, how he beat another professor to get his job, and just how amazing he is. He is seriously one of the most conceited and egotistical professors I have come across. He rarely teaches Chinese. He spends most of his time just talking about himself and how great he is.
pretty straightforward professor.. i understand everything and he told us what's going to be on the tests or quizzes.. take advantage of your homework because he does grade it for accuracy ( but its not difficult) if you pay attention to his class you will get at least a B for sure.
A lot of people seem to dislike this professor, but Dr. Chang is one of the best teachers and people I've ever met. Teaching is his whole world, so he takes it very seriously, and he's more careful about grading where other teachers aren't. Will help you more than anyone if you're serious about his class. One of the best at Mt Sac!
Pro Chang is my best teacher ever. He is kind of strick teacher because he grades so hard. Attendance is also really important in his class. However, he is willing to help his students and really cares them. Highly recommend this great professor !!!
if you really want to learn chinese take this professor. he is the best teacher... I really enjoy his method of teaching and he always want u to be worry about your improve.i get a A in this class and now i can say that I can speak 4 language(eng, spa,jap and chin)now. u have to do your homework and study with ur heart study hard
+/wrote the book so everything you're on test is in there. free tutoring covers everything that'll be on the test. good/useful/easily understood material. -/is a d-bag. TA teaches whole class, only time he talks is about how great he or his kids are. hw can't be turned in EARLY, ONLY ON TIME. very lazy in intersession, no office hours even by appt.
Getting 100% in writing and participation are impossible. Because if you get 100% that means you are so great he will remember you forever. No ones writing is perfect, even if you do everything right, you still can't get 100. Even his doctorate essay was not perfect, how can your writing be perfect? Im not making this up, he says this in class
I am partly a native speaker so I took Chinese for easy A's. But man did i have to work hard for those A's. I literally had to do every thing that was assigned. On a side note, I literally rolled my eyes back every class when he began talking about himself and his boasting. He lectures us like he is our parents. He only talks about himself.
He does talk about himself a lot. I learned more about him than Chinese in the first day. But after that, I was immersed in Chinese and the occasional life changing story. The background information he gives helps memorize the characters. Excellent teacher, hilarious and highly recommend. Took him for winter intercession.
This course should be renamed to Professor Chih-Ping Chang 101.
Avoid this class at all cost. Emperor Chang likes to boast about his success. His life is more important than anyone else's. Impossible to get 100% on tests because his highness couldn't get 100 on his doctorates essay. Brags about writing his textbook in less than a week. Learned absolutely nothing in this class except about his life.
Try his class, and you will realize how nice other professors are! try him, you wont regret you will like him!!!
Where is Mt SAC president. This guy must be fired immediately!! He boasts every single minutes !! never trust what he said, believe me, 90% of his words are bs.
As a teacher he's whatevers and is clear about what's going to be on tests. But personality wise, he digresses from lecture A LOT and talks about himself way too much. And when that does happens he tends to cram everything in at the end and it's really annoying. He's also very nitpicky, I would not take again. (Took him for winter session)
Talks about himself. Instead of helping us understand it's frustrating. Also has a bad attitude about people talking or even looking at their phone. I felt as if I was a child in his class. I won't let any of my friends take his class
I'm pretty sure this guy is more like my boss than my teacher. He let us understand how much power he has, and mess around with him bcuz he's gonna treat u as his labor.
I'm taking his class this semester. Honestly, I think he is a funny dude since nobody wants to laugh or not even smile during his class.
Does not use a rubric for grading, which means your scores are largely subjective and dependent on his mood. Inflated ego means he won't listen to dissenting opinions and will constantly plug his own stories completely irrelevant to class material.
I took Chinese 1 and it was pretty easy for me, I don't know why so many students dropped the class. Just do the homeworks (super easy i.e. characters sheet), and just study what he tells you to study (he's always specific about the material of the tests). A good attendance record will also help your grade. Overall it wasn't bad at all :)
Tends to talk a lot about himself. Can be a difficult course if you're not a native speaker. Picky grader when it comes to assignments and quizzes. He does tell you what will be on the Quizzes/Exams so if you study what he tells you to study you should pass. Definitely the hardest Chinese 1 Professor at Sac.
Does not care about helping his students. He expect students to already know everything. Doesn't answer questions more than once per student. He is extremely picky with his grading. He talks about his ego more than he teaches. Do not take his class!!!
He does not teach period.
He gets distracted too often and his class lacks a real rubric, which makes grading stressful. On the plus side, the class can be fun and he does offer some extra credit.
He is a great professor who really wants you to come to office hours to really learn the material. Grades by a high standard in both English and Chinese. He really loves truly happy and friendly students who are self-motivated to learn Chinese.
He is probably the hardest professor I've ever had. I do not recommend this professor. I did not know Chinese at all and it was very hard for me to keep up with everything. He expects so much. When you make a mistake (pronunciation, grammar, and etc) he says extremely rude comments. Instead of encouraging his students,he puts them down.
very nice instructor.
If you can avoid him, I would recommend it. No budging with this professor. He won't do revisions during his office hours, and wants you to figure things out on your own. Must be very hard for non native Chinese speakers.
His instruction is clear, informative and fun. I really enjoy his class and take all his classes.
What a great professor! His life lessons truly motivated me to be better.
I will continue to take his classes. I had a lot fun in his class. He is fair and nice.
He really makes the class interesting. I think he is the best professor I ever have so far.
Since its elementary Chinese, there are a lot of non native Chinese speakers and there are a lot of different accents which give them a hard time pronouncing some certain Chinese words. He doesnt care about it. Instead of patiently correcting them, he graded harshly. Would mark students tardy when 1 or 2 mins late while he comes late occasionally
He is very clear in teaching. I really enjoyed his class and will for sure take his Chinese 2.
He is very knowledge and interesting in teaching the Chinese culture, which is the focus of Chinese 2.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!! WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER CAME IN CONTACT WITH. ALL HE DOES IS TALK ABOUT HIMSELF, HOW RICH HE IS AND HOW HE CAN DO WHATEVER HE WANTS AND WILL CRAM TEACHING IN THE LAST 30 MINS! HE BARLEY USES THE BOOK AND HE WROTE IT HIMSELF(HE SAYS IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN) I HAD TO LEARN OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM ON MY OWN !!
Honestly he is the best professor I have ever had in all my years of schooling. He really makes it a point to connect with his students even if you are aren't a native speaker(me). He's so much more then just a great language professor, he is also a great life coach. You will always leave his class happier/smarter than when you first walked in.
He is the Worst professor Ive ever seen in my first 27 years of life. He is arrogant and self-centered. He keeps talking about his own life and it takes 50% of time in lectures. He doesnt allow students to talk but he keeps talking unrelated staff such as his daughters iPad during students quizzes, midterm and even the final exam.
I'm never going back. He has a really bad case of Narcissistic Personality Disorder and dismisses everybody who doesn't agree with him. Learned nothing besides the fact that he's the best person in the entire campus and he makes A LOT of money. Like A LOT OF MONEY you guys! Worst person I've ever encountered. Chinese can wait; your patience won't.
You will learn a lot from him.
He is the greatest professor I have even had so far. He is very clear in teaching and efficient in delivering the learning materials. You should really try him and see for yourself.
He really enjoys helping students, especially those who are struggling.
It is pretty easy to get a good grade in this class. The professor is very nice and he gives good grades to encourage his students wanting to learn more.
He is very good at teaching and helping students. I learned a lot about Chinese culture from him. I will take his class in the spring again.
I took his Chinese 2 in fall of 2018 and really learned a lot about the Chinese culture. I will take his Chinese 3 again this spring. I really cannot wait to attend his class again. It is fun and inspirational.
He likes to encourage students to be better than before. After finishing his Chinese 1, I do feel more confident about school and will do a lot better for my study because Professor taught me how to. Thank you Dr. Chang.
Now he gave less homework and gives better grades. I got an easy A from his class.
I really love his class. I learned a lot about life and Chinese culture. I will take his Chinese 2 again. Some comments said something negative about him, but I disagree. You should try one class of his and know these comments are not really true.
Dr. Chang's class is really fun and he gives extra credit to help students to get better grades. Learning Chinese becomes fun and easy with his teaching.
I had a lot of fun in taking the Chinese class. I also learned much about the Chinese language and culture.
He is a great professor. He is very knowable about the Chinese language and culture. He is fun. Time really flies by quickly when I attend his classes. I will take with him again.
As long as you follow the syllabus, you get a good grade.
He often dismisses the class early and leaves the classroom early even it's not the time for lesson break yet and then comes back late. During the last 10min of the lesson, you can feel that he just wanted to end the lesson asap. Plus, he loves talking about how much money he made and how good he is. Tired of listening. Lazy students may like him.
Took his class like a year and a half ago. He's a good professor, but sometimes says unnecessary things that offend people. Very knowledgeable and has a huge background in Chinese. Make sure to do all his homework and CHECK YOUR WORK, He marks off every little single detail if the writing is off or not written nicely.
He is a great professor, very efficient and professional. You always learn a lot about Chinese culture in his class. He is so good at presentation and I will take his Chinese 2 to continue his wonderful teaching.
I really loves his class, especially when he tells stories about characters. They are really fun to learn.
He is very good at teaching. I always learned a lot from his class. Definitely I will take his class again. You will learn a lot about Chinese culture and Chinese characters.
I learned a lot about life through his wonderful presentation about Chinese culture and wisdom. I become more efficient and use my time a lot more wisely under Dr. Chang's influence. I think he is the greatest teacher I have so far had.
He is fun, smart and wise. You will learn a lot from him and have a lot of fun in his class. Time really flies in his class. Before you know it, the class is over. I will definitely take his class again.
His class is interesting and I learned a lot about Chinese and the Chinese wisdom from his class. He is always willing to help and clarify any questions I have. I do not have such a good professor like him for quite a while.
He is a great professor. I learned a lot about the Chinese culture from him. I really look forward to taking his class again.
His class is always fun and you can learn a lot from him. I have never got an A before, and in his Chinese 1 I got my first A. I will definitely take his class again and encourage my friends to get a good grade from this wonderful professor like me.
He is very clear and organized. He really follows his schedule well and I learned a lot from him about how to get a good grade without studying hard. He is always willing to show us how to enjoy studying. I will take his class again and continue to enjoy learning the Chinese culture from this wonderful professor.
Just absolutely horrible. For those reading, instead of giving mostly opinion based, Ill give actual facts from his class. By his own words, even if you get 100 percent on everything with no absences, you can only get 95 percent. He offers an additional five percent extra credit, to get to 100 percent, so really its not extra credit.
He needs to be modest, he doesn't have to tell his students EVERY WEEK about how much money he earns and how early he got his doctor's degree to make his students respect him. He is indeed knowledgeable; however, as a person, he still has a lot to learn.
really fun class, not much homework. as long as you come to class you're pretty much good.
He said he is well-knowledgeable wealthy, but not knowing how to use canvas until he has to start working on the remote class. During class time would teach lecture in extremely stereotypical ways saying to a complete family MUST have a dad and a mom OR would judge ladies that convey wrong ideas to sutdents. HATE IT. PERIOD
Taught lectures in his "FUNNY" way with racist and stereotypical speech. Taught how wealthy he was and how hard to fire a professor, every day. Keeps pointing fingers at students. Does not allow tablet and pencil to take notes but did not state in his syllabus. Awful experience for who wants to learn real knowledge. Needs to respect his students.
Dr. Chang is a really great Professor. He is always there when you need something explained. He puts life lessons in some of his lectures. If you follow his criteria you'll get an easy A. Funny jokes mixed in with his lectures. He cares about his students. 5% extra credit for Language lab, but for online its journals. I would take this class again.
Dr. Chang is a wonderful Chinese teacher. It is not difficult to get A even though the attendance is mandatory.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS it is totally wasting time. He always spending a lot time to talk about HOW MUCH MONEY he can make in Mtsac and how great he is. He only spending a little time to teach. He love to talk about student without respect. What a BAD professors!
Mr. Chang Is a horrible teacher. He talks bad about his students from other classes. He even spoke badly about me in my online class when he thought I was absent. He said he will fail me even though I turned in all of my work. The class is filled with native speakers and will move fast. You will not learn what is expected of you in this class.
I've read a lot of bad comments about professor Chang. But I'll say: YOU need to be productive! Keep track of what he's doing and expecting. Does he love to speak about him? Yes. Is he respectful of everyone? No. Your last project is significant. When he gives hw, you need to do it, and in-class, he will go over it and provide you with time to fix.
I took Chinese 1, 2 and 4 with Chang. In Chinese 1 he was really nice and a great professor. I learned a lot but a lot of my non-native Chinese speaking classmates struggled. He doesn't speak Chinese to the class and uses his own textbook. He is not helpful and constantly talks about himself. I was one of his top students and I learned something.
Chinese 2 was not very difficult and it was not as good at Chinese 1. Chang talked about himself most of the time not really teaching us anything. He is bad with technology and if you want to visit him in office hours he won't respond. I wish he spoke Chinese in class and actually taught. I am struggling with Chinese in my UNI b/c of him.
I was able to skip Chinese 3 b/c he says 3 and 4 are not built off of each other. What? I am finding that out now in UCLA he barely taught us anything grammar wise and never had us write. He used to have you do handwritten HW and people complained so he took them away. Bad move. How can you learn anything in his class? He needs to restructure.
Professor Chang ended up becoming one of my most favorite professors I've taken a class from at Mt. Sac, he started off pretty intimidating, he's a little hard on his students but that's because he wants you to pass. He actually clarifies things pretty well if you ask him questions. He does talk about himself but I felt moreso inspired listening
Yes. He is always talks about himself but also sharing his experience in life instead of "traditional teaching" who doesn't care about their student career. I am really grateful he is my professor and he inspired me. He does not give much homework but just to make sure follow his instruction. That's all you need!
The first couple days of class were absolutely terrible, didn't know how to deal with his never ending stories that always seems like he's "humble bragging". He disguises such stories by saying he's trying to motivate his students but it just doesn't seem that way. RARELY checks his emails outside of class. You will have time to finish hw in class.
Youll learn the basic things. It really only takes one hour to teach the material especially during summer term. He spent all 3 instructional hours, 1 hour - actual teaching & 2 hours - going off topics and humble bragging. I personally dont agree with his stories so I am always zoned out. Just be prepared to listen & self study. Participate!!!!!
WORST professor ever. grade not based on requirements. never give a full grade. poor organize. teach nothing. I have learned Chinese, but it is still impossible to get A. seldom reply to emails. Handwriting needs to be extremely perfect to get full credit. a lot of homework tough grader. he wants you frustrating. waste money and time. avoid him.
He requires you to purchase a textbook that he wrote himself, The textbook is awful. It makes little to no sense. He expects us to understand concepts that are never explained. All character writing assignments are ripped out of the book. This means that even if you can get your hands on a used book for less its useless. All his instructions are ba
Never give full credit. Teach nothing. If you don't know Chinese, you won't pass. A lot of handwriting assignments. Radios need to contain subtitles with Chinese, English+ Pinyin. Diaries can't use words other than the book. Random take 20-50 points off. large file -20, Shaded files -20. Imperfect writing -10. Self-introduction -5. Impossible A.
doesn't really explain his grading technologically illiterate- will dock you off for not submitting a pdf in the "correct" orientation because he apparently cannot do so himself mean on all assignments across the board seems to be in the 40s letter grading only requires his own textbook, can't buy used ones all but 5 dropped the class garbage
picky. outdated teacher! take your points off because of his poor computer skills. Feedbacks is not improve your skills but put you down, and take points off. Random requirements to read instructions carefully! You pay 100% effort, you won't get an A. Teach nothing but require you have perfect pronunation! Take 20-50 points off randomly. Worst!!
prof. chang is probably the most coolest prof. i have ever met. his class is pretty easy , he provides extra credit also for attending his class. he likes to tell stories about himself and make jokes with the class. i recommend taking him!!
He makes class very fun. He's a really funny guy as well. He cares about teaching us and enjoys his job. A little tough grader but it's to help you not make mistakes in your writing. Can't wait to take his next class to be honest. Great class. Great teacher!
Talking about his own stuff all the time.(U know those are fake) I'm a Chinese native speaker but his class still hard to pass. Don't choose his class even you cannot find a good class. Trust me!
I grew up speaking Chinese with my family and even so this class was barely passable It is elementary Chinese but u wont pass if u dont already speak it. In his online class you are required to buy his textbook and he assigns all work through it while never actually teaches you. Extremely picky grader, Never missed an assignment and still got C
DO NOT take his class. He's the toughest, pickiest, pettiest grader. He does not teach in this online class at all. He only assigns homework, in which you have to teach yourself 100%. It takes him days to reply His feedback doesn't make sense. He docks off points wherever he can. He doesn't give great assignment instructions, yet takes off points.
Save yourself. Does not respond to emails or messages. Sometimes sends out assignments last min. and expects you to do them in less than 24 hours. Will mark points if you don't follow what he wrote word for word in his own book that he makes you buy, but then that's called plagiarism. Will mark points for words that you used but he hasn't taught.
Horrible. Finds any way to mark off points for the pettiest details (e.g *english* capitalization). Doesn't describe assignments thoroughly and feedback on assignments tells you absolutely nothing. Had to resort to youtube to learn pronunciations. Unorganized. Final was announced the night before it was due. Waste of money.
Professor is picky on grading. Sometimes forget to reply to the email. Good thing is you can really learn Chinese through this class and you can improve your Chinese very quickly during his class. I do learn a lot of Chinese knowledge in this class. He is a nice guy. But you need to prepare for this class, understanding may hard for you. Good luck.
The worst professor ever
Where do I start? Worst professor I think I've EVER had. I'm fluent and have taken Chinese 3/4 before, got an A. This class was a whole ordeal, with unclear instructions, picky grading, and will find ways to take off points. Wish I was a comedian, would have passed this joke of a class easily. Save the headache and stress and just pass on this.
Took him in summer'21, asynchronous. As a native speaker, I did great in here but don't expect to get an easy A just bc u can speak/write/read the language. He DEF grades hard, but if u can adjust quick to his high expectations, u will be fine. Otherwise, I think u will struggle if u arent a native speaker.
His grading criteria is unclear
He nearly lectures; does a lot of chit chat about his personal achievements in his career and love life. Students have to take more time to filter out the useless parts of the class from the things they truly wanted to learn. If you are not a native speaker, this class would be too difficult for you to take.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! He doesn't teach, just shows off his achievements. Even native-speakers will have a hard time with him because his grading is not clear, very strict and vindictive. Non-native speakers have no chance. He is the worst teacher in this country I have ever taken, I felt like I was in prison in his class. Save yourself, avoid him!
The worst professor ever.He is always showing off his achievements and belittling us in class, and hardly teaches any Chinese. And His grading criteria is unclear.
THE WORST PROFESSOR I have ever had. His grading criteria are so confusing and unclear. Crossing out and circle your writing but never comment on the reason he takes your points. Never reply to emails and give feedback late, so you won't have enough time to modify your writing. Even a native speaker can't understand the grading policy.
His scoring criteria are always inaccurate. He only corrected 60% of the assignments in the final chat, which means that we can't modify assignments to improve our grades because the page has been closed. Even a native speaker will think you don't need to take this class, so as to improve your grading standard. I can tell more if no word limit
Professor Chang is strict but fair. His instructions are clear if you pay attention. He can be strict at grading, but only in hopes of us not making the same mistakes again. His class is a mix of lecturers and chitchatting, which makes it fairly relaxing and entertaining. If your a non-native speaker struggling in class, please be sure to speak up.
Don't take this professor class. His class is very bad.
The worst professor I ever had in my life. Very unorganized, forgot about the assignments, no clear instructions, will suddenly give you assignments on the same day and will do anything to take off your credit/points.
Weird grading, no lecture, only study following the book. He created this book which is hard to read and understand. While I know Mandarin well and write characters that follow exactly his character form, he still grades them wrong anyway while my Chinese boss told me I did right, it is so weird.
Took this as a summer online course. I don't think I would have done well if it were in person. There are no lectures, you follow along in the textbook. It is possible to get an A as a non-native speaker, but definitely takes a lot of work. Unless you genuinely want to learn Chinese, I would pick a different language.
I am Chinese and current have a D in this class. Fr he doesn't know what he is talking about. He always talks about how he got his job and how smart he is. Trust me he knows nothing. He also teaches traditional chinese which is barely used in china. Don't waste your time on taking this class.
Professor manages to make the subject very interesting, even on Monday mornings.
Very memorable lectures.
Avoid this class if possible - the professor's grading is confusing and inconsistent. While the textbook is required, the lectures aren't very helpful. I found unstuck AI and ChatGPT more useful for study prep than the professor's materials.
Likes to yap about neoliberalist propaganda. Not recommended because i came here to learn chinese, not be indoctrinated.
If you like listening to narcissistic people. Ive got good news for you!
Don't think you will pass this class if you do not already know Chinese. His online class has no instructions other than reading the very confusing textbook authored by him... and it is MANDATORY you buy the textbook. Joke.
The professor is very picky about grading assignments, and I have to buy books, which cost me $60. If you can avoid it, don't take this course to save some money.
If you don't understand Chinese already, don't take this class. The textbook doesn't help you and he's not exactly helpful either. You learn entirely off of the textbook and everything is weighed equally except exams. I really don't suggest foreigners or people who don't understand the language already to take this class.
Professor don't know English. Textbook that is confusing and does not teach foreigners. One of the first writing assignment was about using a Chinese typing website and failed to realize that I can't double click paper. When I email the professor about this he emailed back “ you have to find a textbook at the book store” failure of teaching.
If you do not know Chinese fluently, do not take this class. Your head will explode.
Don't even CONSIDER taking his course. Had my family who literally lives and breathes in China help me with some assignments and I couldn't get above an 80% on any of his assignments.
He uses a book written by himself. He didn't request students to buy it. But without the book, you can't do any of the assignments. He is not native mandarin speaker. Grade standards only from his own dictionary. Very poor or communication, There was a video for himself, and that's all. Other teachers would patiently follow up but not him.
So there are many issues here so i will give you them in bullet points. * Teacher wrote his own text book, you have to to buy his text book for his class. * talks to much about random things other then teach the lesson * he does not post his lectures on canvas so you cant go back and double check your work tldr. find a better teacher.
