Loved him. Make sure you don't miss too many classes as you'll fall behind quickly. He has a great sense of humor & communicates well with the students.
I learned a lot from him. Very helpful. He really has passion for geography and many other subjects. Knows a lot, and makes the class interesting. He is also hilarious. Wish he wasn't so moody, you can sometimes tell when he is in a bad mood and grumpy.

I agree w/what other student said about "grumpy" but otherwise DrDodd is a good prof.Good knowlege, and funny when he is in good mood.Works hard for class.I also like the way he doesnt put up with stupid questions from dumb girls in class.
Dodd and Tibbits, there are TWO good geograpy professors in that dept.
Completely unhelpful, unclear as to what he's going to test over. Spends a lot of time on easy stuff and doesn't go over lab expectations and stuff people need to know. Not "hilarious" -- he laughs hardest at his own jokes.
I find this teacher to be unhelpful, very rude and condescending during his lectures. He rags on us for not understanding concepts and isn't willing to answer questions during class time. He's really moody and takes things out on his students.
Don't take a class with this teacher unless you want to have a horrible quarter. He expects students to know everything and gets mad if we don't. Twice already he failed to come to class because he forgot. He says the same annoying phrases every day.
Nice guy, has his grumpy/moody days..but other than that he's a great teacher
Chip can be funny and irritating at the same time; thinks he's Mike Myers. But, he does love geography which I'll give him credit for. Don't let it phase you if he gets mad at you or the class for not understanding the material. It's his own fault.
Interesting guy. Goofy at times. Loves his field. If you dont put in the work he can be hard on you. This course covers ALOT of material
Get angry if you don't understand, his tests are way off topic of what he focuses on in class. Tends to be moody, I learned more from reading the text than actually coming to class.
Not sure I understand the negatives about this guy (except for his repetitive humor & grumpiness) coz he is a good teacher. If you put in the effort, you will do well.If you expect this 2 be a free ride 4 your science credit, you deserve your bad grade.
Chip Dodd, aka the "Isaac Newton" of Geography
prof. Dodd teaches QUITE the Geography class. Okay, the class title includes the word "Cartography",I with we learned more cartography. But the landforms were interesting, and Dodd showed how this wasn't just Geology. I wish he was as patient in lab as he is in lecture.
It was one of the most difficult classes I've taken @ Shoreline. It seems as he makes it hard. However, I enjoyed him as a person a lot and he's kinda cute too!:)
Three great Geog. professors on this sound they call Puget. #1 Rawhide. #2 Dodd. #3 Tibbits.

A very gruff intimidating man. When he looks you in the eye with that scowl, goatee, and thick waft of back-hair sticking out of his shirt you tremble in your shoes. But he is a great instructor. I learned a lot about a subject I didn't think I'd like. He explains well, and has tough but fair tests.
I nominate this man to be "King of Shoreline". What an outstanding Geography prof! This guy really knows his weather, his landforms, his food webs ect., ect. His labs are fun, too.
For the love of Masso! Take all this guy's classes.
I have been studying geography around the world with some of the finest faculty, inc. @ Oxford, Cambridge, the Sorbonne & Princeton. This man, Dodd, is one of the best. In fact, I would only rate Dr. Tainu Krasnoyarsk-Ferenghi of the U. of the Baltics in Riga as a superior physical geographer. And Dodd knows more about Inselbergs than he does.

Best teacher I have had at Shoreline. Only one I would chat with outside of school.

This was a good informative class.I think that Chip really shows enthusasm for the subject matter. He's really into this stuff! Knowing about seismic activity is important living in the PNW, and this class is a good way to learn about it.See him during office hrs,or otherwise he'll A)be in a hurry or B)talk your ear off. Nice guy otherwise, though.
I took all of Chip's geography classes. I had a pretty huge crush on him too. He's super interesting and has a great sense of humor. If only I could have gone on his African geography class last summer... Now I'm at Western and his geography classes went towards my major, so everything worked out!

Dear GOD, do not take class from him. Most obnoxious prof at SCC. Only class I've dropped.
He is a gruff, intimidating man. With that devilish goatee, scowl, thick waft of back-hair sticking out of his shirt, and impenetrable stare he makes you shake in your shoes when you talk to him. But cut through the brusque demeanor and you get a very kind, helpful man who is very passionate about Geography.
Dodd is the man. Take this to fill your science requirement, you won't be sorry. He's a hilarious dude, and knows his s--t. Study hard, however, as he will test on everything.
I had two shoreline professors. Dutch henry and chip dodd. guess who i liked better? i mean, what arrogant smuck calls himself "Dutch." He thinks hes some kind of philosopher or something. Chip Dodd on the other hand was the man. He rocked! Made a boring subject fun, knew a lot, and is damn funny. So take Dodd, and give "Dutch" the old heave-ho.
Oh how I am to enjoying htis class and the teacher at the moment, I recommend it to everyone.
It was a 100 level class, but he was the driest teacher that I hav ever taken. His constant lectures and inability to make things clear made you dread class.

I love Chip. He is my all-time favorite professor! I loved his class, and found it very interesting (even if I did fall asleep sometimes, Chip, it wasn't you- I was really really tired!). If you think he's "dry" you obviously have no sense of humor. He's one of the funniest people I know, and smartest.
While not quite possessing the greatness of Masso, this man still be one fine professor. He can in one minute recite the names of the generalissimos of the Army of the Potomac, and in the next decipher the physics of the Roche Moutonee (a very cute geological formation if you ask me, as it looks like a sheep!). This man one geographical wizard!
He sucks man ! My comment is ...NEVER TAKE HIS CLASS !
Probably the most interesing class I've taken at Shoreline. Chip is a very entertaiining and knowledgable teacher who makes physical geography enjoyable to study. I can't imagine people not liking him or the class unless they absolutely hate the material.
A class act in and out of the lesson room. I'm glad this quarter is almost over, but I will kind of miss this prof, his sense of humor, and his love for his materiel.
An awesome teacher and friend! He is almost always joking and if you just go with it, it can be a lot of fun. Pretty easy class if you pay attention and really try to absorb the information. Dodd is a great teacher, take his classes if you get the chance!
He is the nicect guy you would ever want to meet, but this was his first time teaching astronomy and it showed. He is knowledgeable about the subject, but he was too disorganized and we did not cover a reasonable amount of material over the quarter.
Hes very passionate and onhis nonmoody days be very nice. But hes a geography teacher not a scientist & it shows.Disorganized & tended to go slowly over narrow range instead of giving broad overview as 101 class ought to. Also often brings moodiness to class. Oh & at first the must be center of attention humor is cute. By the end it got annoying.
I had him for astronomy, which is his hobby not his profession so it was a strange class. He was very sloppy and got distracted easily, but he's a really nice guy and he's excited about teaching which makes things interesting.
This Guy has to be one the most enthusiastic professors that I have had the pleasure of having. he made the class fun and exiciting, when, quite frankly, the material was as dry and as uninteresting as ever. He doesn't grade hard at all and his grading is always consistant. if you have the opportunity to take one his classes, don't hesitate.
He is a geography teacher, and that's painfully obvious. He hardly spends any time at all on math or physics-based material, which is very unfortunate. He focusing nearly entirely on geological and historical material. Astronomy should have at least *some* math and physics...

I had this prof him a few quarters ago. As a teacher he is good. He teaches a diverse of materials and concepts of and makes it an iinteresting topic to learn. But I don't like him. He's either grouchy or goofy and not as funny as he thinks. Mostly he is the only one laughing at his jokes. Very rude sometimes. So good prof, bad person.
At first, monotone and seemly boring, he has kinda of a hidden dry humor. And has a distinctive laugh when laughing at his own jokes, and then immediately returns to his monotone state. He teaches the material well but sometimes doesn't exactly seem a thrilled. Overall the class was good.
Had him awhile ago. He's a good teacher and a good guy. I don't see complaining about him. If you do the work, go to class and read the material like a college student is supposed to you'll do fine. Simple as that.
AAAHHH. Every day, I just waited for it to be over. I'm glad I brought my laptop, because 99% of the class just put their head down. He just droned on pointlessly, more interested in letting us know he knew something than teaching us. If I ever hear "Cool!" again I'll cry.
At the beginning of the quarter I hated the guy he was rude at times, and you could sum up his responses as "you're wrong". However now I see that his dry humor and his love and interest for the subject have won me over. He is a great guy and will help if you need. Talks in monotone at times but you can do it. Bring a lap top and do whatever...
Chip's lectures were long and the distracted Startrek referances and a cool piece of information that we could her about later made it hard to follow the lecture. The class I was in was an IDS class and the Prof. Dodd worked very poorly with Prof. Idiart. Overall nice guy but a very poor teacher for somebody who doesn't love the class.
This guy wasn't a bad teacher, but really seemed to pick on certain students all the time just to push their buttons. His class isn't hard, just don't forget about the frequent quizzes, and expect to come to class frequently b/c he loves to hand out pop quizzes.
In a college full of New York intellectual elitists, I appreciated the down to earthiness of Mr. Dodd. He manages to be liberal without being an arrogant misguided politically correct intellectual thug like some of these cats here at SCC.
worst teacher ive ever had in my life. he picks on certain students just to do so even if their not a prob. he always gets off topic or talks about other things that "relate" but doesnt make sense so sometimes its confusing on what you need to remember/take notes on. i learn more from the book than him. he also needs to improve on public speeking.
Chip is one of my favorite professors ever! He is so hilarious, but in a strange way that often includes star trek and battlestar galactica references! The class is not that easy, but if you work hard it's not so bad. He's extremely knowledgable on many subjects and is frankly much more evolved and enlightened than many american men. Love him!
I highly enjoyed to take this class. He show me that goegraphy is not only about map and big cities but about everything that is importent in the world, for example weather, migration, the enviroment, racism
His lectures are extremely entertaining, not only because of the interesting and intuitively presented content, but also because of his many genuinely humorous asides. I wasn't very interested in the natural sciences before taking his Geo 204 class, but I am glad that I did because it opened my eyes to a lot of fascinating stuff. My favorite prof.
He was a really entertaining and interesting professor. He took some getting used to. Many people hate him at first, but he grows on you after a while. I took 4 classes with him and never got less than an A-. I rarely read the book even though it was my major. Easy and cool class for any college kid. Everyone should take him atleast once!
"The Lion of the Urals" was my favorite Shoreline instructor. He is genuinely passionate about Geography. I actually felt as though I walked away with important information from this class.
great teacher
I took his online class and did really well, much better than I thought for sure. It was a little frustrating to know that I didn't learn much of anything. He seems like a nice porfessor and all, but this wasn't a very productive course for me...but I passed with a 3.8 so I can't complain too much, maybe it's because he was testing online teaching?
Not a bad professor but he missed a lot of opportunites to be a better teacher. He tends to say "Cool" too much and recycle his jokes. However, he is passionate about geography and seems to enjoy teaching it.
My boyfriend got a really good grade from him. There was barely any assignments and if there was one, it was ridiculously easy. He even turned in all the tests late. But when I take the classs, there were many hard assignments and I never could turn in anything late. Dodd is a flake and doesn't put forth any effort and it shows.
Chip is a great teacher. His explanations are clear and interesting and he knows how to keep the classes attention. He does have a lot of tests, but they are always on material covered in class or in the reading and are easy to excel in if you pay reasonable attention. Overall, he is a great teacher, and is the best teacher I've had at Shoreline
I took this class online. Chip is disorganized and has a very short time length for when things are due. we had weekly quizes which were fine, also we had weekly exercises which were usually confusing and he was rarely any help at all. The mid-terms and final were ridiculously hard and we weren't given enough time for them at all.
I enjoyed taking landform classes with Chip Dodd. Some of us called him "The Viceroy of the Slot Canyon." Others called him "The Grand Mughal of Graben."
I really wanted to like this class. Sadly, Chip's teaching methods were very much not to my liking and instead I grew to dread going to class. While I don't question his passion for the subject, I do question his passion for teaching. He seemed genuinely burned out on many occasions. I wouldn't take this class again. Too many better choices avail.
I took this class online. If you want confusing homework with grammar errors and endless pages of books to read - take this class. He isn't that helpful when you email him confused about something, and he expects you to know every drop of information. The final tests are hard also. Good luck to you if you take this class!
DO NOT LIKE HIM AT ALL. Take it if you want to read endless pages from textbook at home, which he hardly uses in lecture. Not that helpful at all. My friend and I wish we havent taken his calss.
this teachers extremely helpful! if you read the book, you should do great on the tests. hes understandable and nice to all students. great class!
Chip Dodd is a very condescending old man. He will label you as soon as you walk into class. Not only is he useless when it comes to learning the material, don't even bother asking him questions in class. After his sarcastic answer or even possibly saying, "your question is not worth our time" he will begin a dry lecture. Get uses to creepy laughs.
He's not that bad. He has a quirky sense of humor and is very enthusiastic about geography. He can be disorganized and moody. He makes it pretty interesting however. The person complaining about his "wasting our time" remark fails to mention that the person asked that same question 3 times and did it when we were having a lecture.
I've had both in-class and online courses with Chip and I recommend taking an in-class with him. Online he's disorganized, takes forever to grade stuff, and doesn't respond to emails very well. In-class isn't much better (like his moodiness) but when he's not moody, he can be entertaining and being in class, it's easier to understand him.
Horrible teacher. Doesn't talk about the lecture goes off track way too much. Don't ever take this class.
I really enjoyed taking this class from Chip. He does an excellent job keeping the class engaged, and if you pay attention and do the reading, you will do just fine. He is dedicated, passionate, and a pretty cool dude. Get ready for some Star Trek jargon, an occasional meow, an evil laugh here and there, and some down right good teaching.
Not recommand to take his online class.
While this course could be interesting at times I don't really suggest it unless you have a high tolerance for a very moody grumpy teacher. He can be very funny but his rudeness when he is in a bad mood is very condescending and demeaning.
My favorite class this fall. He is really interesting in a variety of things, assigns a reasonable amount of work (not too much, not too little), and he is very entertaining. I want to take more of his classes this winter. Defintiely one of the top profs at Shoreline.
I had no idea what to expect from a "Geography" course & maybe thought it would be boring memorization. But this class opened my eyes! Geography is really the study of how processes work in the world & very useful! Prof. Dodd is an excellent instructor and uses a lot of different media to teach this class. Very fun! Very useful! Strongly suggest.
Good class, good teacher. It goes over things that actually help you win arguments about things in day to day discussion. It helps make a lot more sense of daily newspaper articles. Very useful materal. And he is funny!
Took online. Overall a pretty well rounded class. Quiz every week and assignments almost every week, two tests, and a paper. A lot of unnecessary online reading, plus book and slide shows.
Online was straight forward...however he didn't seem very helpful. He would never reply to any student's e-mails and rarely assist where we needed it. His tests don't always follow the readings and his study guides are too vague. "Midterm will test you on weather"...what about weather? class was easy-ish, but really frustrating.
Took his online "Introduction to Geography" class. Torture is an apt word for it. Enough reading to make taking this class hell if you have any other academic classes. Tests have a more punishing time limit than any I have ever seen. Using his style I could teach anyone advanced Calculus. I am a theater major.
Imagine if you will a cross between Crocodile Dundee and your witty Uncle, and that's what you get ith Chip Dodd. This isn't a class you can do well at if you don't attend, take notes, and study for. If you do what you're supposed to however you will get a decent grade and actually enjoy a funny good professor. Do the right thing.
Helpfulness- 0. Never replied to any of the e-mails. For completed Lab assignments gave no explanations why the grade would be lower than 100%. Would not suggest taking his class ever, especially online.
Took his geography 100. Amazing teacher with a passion for what he is teaching. I wish all my professors were as funny and thorough as he is. To everyone who didnt do well in his class, try showing up daily. I showed up daily, never did any of the reading.. Essentially just listed to his lectures and got a 4.0. Would highly recommend him!!!!!!
I'm not a bad student. But there is so much material covered in such a short amount of time it is extremely hard to keep up. Take notes, come to class everyday, do the readings, and don't take this class with any other classes that will be hard for you. It's too much to handle at once. Make sure you have at least 2 hours a day to work on this class
Do you like Star Trek? Do you like ridiculous references to history and goofiness in general? Chip Dodd is for you! He teaches this class w/ T. Payne but Dodd was my favorite of the two. Both very knowledgable and fun. They know their stuff. Not an easy class but very fun and interesting. They will challenge you but you will come away smarter.
Honestly, pretty bad. I like my teachers to be responsible and he was definitely not. He didn't grade any of the assignments until the very end of the quarter. So, if you're wanting an organized teacher then don't take this class.
Amazing instructor, makes a normally dry subject very interesting and has a great sense of humor. I laughed almost every class. This person has actually made me want to become a teacher.
Chip makes his classes vibrant and relevant. Chip challenges you as a student and expects you to do lots of independent thinking. Reading load is heavy and labs are intense. Have to push him to get help. Doesn’t like it when people come to class unprepared. If you’re working hard he will respect you. Extra credit available.
He is most likely one of the greatest professors on campus. He strives to be accurate, hilarious and knowledgeable; and it shows. I took this class for a science requirement, but it ended up being a favorite. It's not easy, it's not always fun, but it is great. Confused on a lab? Go to office hours. He turned my nightmare into a piece of cake. A+
I really like Chip. He's a hilarious guy and the class is pretty well-structured and predictable with weekly quizzes, 2 midterms, a final exam and a final paper. Show up to class, study for the tests, write the paper and you'll 4.0. His negatives are that his study guides aren't the most clear and he doesn't seem to understand how Canvas works.
like this professor, but he isn't always approachable. Students are hesitant to ask him questions or shout out answers during class. Graded feedback isn't clearly explained. He gets off topic frequently, but he is obviously passionate about what he teaches. The class was fun and not hard if you show up and read the assignments.
I took his class as a hybrid. I was astonished to see he had good ratings. There are pop quizzes every week which can be stressful, but they aren't that difficult. At times he was very rude to other students who did not understand the material, and he would blame the students for any problems that came up on canvas etc. Overall fair professor.
Great guy but you have to do the work and read the materials.
Chill guy but really grinds you on the specifics.
I adored Chip! I took this class just to satisfy a lab credit, I'm TERRIBLE at science courses otherwise, and he pretty much knew that. Chip can be intimidating and seem like a tough teacher, but if you give an effort and communicate with him you will pass the class. I also knew a lot of people who failed. like a lot. GET TO KNOW THE PROF
He is disorganized, not approachable or empathetic. If you tell him you'll miss a quiz day weeks in advance he will just give you a 0 which is ridiculous. He acts like he's at a university and loves to mention how he went to Cal. He is not an appropriate instructor on any level, especially the community college level. Funny, but NOT NICE.
He is a good teacher but he gives random pop quizzes during the week. Even you're 5 minutes late for the class, he'd give you zero. Canvas is so disorganized and assigned a ridiculous amount of readings.
1. Chip is a nice guy with a bite - building a rapport helps. 2. Talk to him during office hours if you're stuck. He's not that scary, just do it. 3. Read and stay ahead of the lectures and you'll be fine. Chip is very interesting and intimidatingly smart. His classes are worth the challenge and I'm going to miss him. He has become a favorite.
Worst and meanest professor I have ever had If you go and ask him a question he'll answer you like your stupid and wished you never asked him. I don't suggest taking his class at all. Very unorganized even tho you try to be on his good side.
He picks on students for asking questions, he uses convoluted less-known movie references to describe the most basic of climate change principles. Constantly contradicts himself. Having trouble with a packet? He'll say "you should already get it, its simple", and then ask you to figure it out alone. He is demeaning, degrading. Why is he teaching?
Horribly mean teacher. Will not help you if you are stuck or don't understand. The meanest teacher I have ever had. Picks on certain students and treats them in a degrading manner.
The hardest class
I'm someone who likes to look at their weeks ahead of time, Prof Dodd doesn't post exam, test, discussion or due dates until two weeks before. He isn't good at explanations. I had a problem understanding some wording in criteria he provided; lots of contradictory things. I messaged him on Canvas, he said to refer to the attchmt--same 1 I had Q's on
This professor is very demeaning and hard to approach. The simplest questions to ask he makes you feel stupid for the feedback. He chose to pick on certain students and rarely helped out. His grading was crazy and there was so many readings that it was extremely hard to keep up. He was very disorganized and didn't teach the material in order.
Chip is one of the best professors in SCC. I understand some students dont love him or his class because he/his class is not easy. And sometimes the lecture is unclear and weekly discussion is stressful. But let me tell you Chip is really helpful and amazing guy. He helped me A LOT during the quarter and class itself is interestingly enough.
Best prof you can find at SCC. He is really passionate what ge does and talks a lot. He can be not easy but if you ask for help, he is the one will be there whenever you want. Trust me, HE IS REALLY THE BEST.
I'll not take his class again because I am not in SCC anymore. But if I could I definitely take his calss again for sure. Don't trust someone who is saying "Chip is not good" or something negative. Because those people probably never asked for help. Do not be scared, he actuary is sweet guy.
Doesn't grade anything until last minute, and can be pretty rude with commentary. Expects way too much out of students and is not flexible.
Difficult and tough class. Never take his class again. Excessive amount of essay and insane exams.
The best class and professor. He was really nice and the lecture was interesting and also clear. This class was not easy but worth it. If you are the person who wants to focus on the subject, social problems, and the world, you will absolutely love this class and him. Thanks, professor Dodd!
Chip is pretty much a total jackass with no organizational skills. When he makes a mistake the class pays for it. He's a terrible lecturer and says "uh" every other word. Lot's of assigned readings from outdated textbooks that he literally scanned oh a photocopier so they're all crooked and some words are too faded to read. Avoid if you can.
Chip is a nice guy, and his class was great. After meeting him on zoom, I found him to be quite kind, having a great interest in geography and his students' success. His class is a bit more difficult than average, but as a sixteen-year-old who got a 4.0, I can say it's not that hard to pass the class.
I wish I was pursuing Geo so I could take more of Chip's classes. His lectures are helpful and I appreciate that he takes the time to record himself and post power points that are supplemental to the assigned readings. If you actually paid attention, he would throw in some humor in his lectures too to keep it interesting. Extra credit helps a lot!
Great prof!
Professor Dodd seems like a nice person. He is clearly passionate about what he teaches! Unfortunately this results in tangents in lectures and a lot of assigned material. The enormous influx of information makes it difficult to retain, even if you study hard. Labs/material can be unclear. Don't take unless necessary, especially during COVID.
lots of profs in this matter teach fluvial land forms, but not all teach PLUVIAL landforms, very important to know in Pac northwest. however, DODD knows pluvial landforms and displays a willingness to teach about this. my point is that you get some extra with dodd that you might not get in your garden variety uw or wasu geog course. GOOD GUY!
