Very good instructor
get good marks on first mid-term and miss the rest, he gives u average
He's a good teacher, just the scale is very steep and the final is very hard.
make a difficult language easy to learn
if u work hard, u can get good marks for sure.
best jap teacher in langara only
he makes love japanese, and him!! :)
Not only does he teach well, he sings like sweet hummingbird! Keep it up =)
very judgmental even if you tried your best
does he work out or something? he's charming though jugemental.
he teaches well and sings well
difficult difficult subject, fun teacher, fun class.
good teacher, hard subject, study hard, youll do good.
Very good teacher, but a seriously difficult course... you really have to study for this one!
hes good but his course is tooooooo hard...
great teacher, fun in class, although exam is not easy, he is a good marker. Really learn a lot from hi
He is excellent teacher. very easy to get mark.

study hard, nice guy
Hate the exam in general, exam format itself and exam marking system. Hard. Picky.
Hayashi!!! i like you~~~~~please open another class for me>"<!!!! 優しい先生です!!!
Really good teacher! Exams are so hard!!! Make sure you study exams. Lots of homework too, need to keep up or your stuck.

very fun and nice guy. lots of homework and study but you will learn a lot.
This guy is great. Very helpful, funny and knowledgable. Makes learning Japanese fun and has interesting teaching techniques. If you want to learn Japn, either take Hayashi or Takei. She's great as well. Leduc is a dumb bicth however.DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
the greatest teacher i have ever met.interesting class, exams are not hard if u really study what he taught~~~~he is also a good singer, but too pity he did not sing this semester~~i love him sooooooo much~he is soooooooooooooo great!!
bad class, bad material, funny teacher, hes not aprroachable doesnt want to answer questions, very anal
Nobody said learning Japn was gonna be easy. Strict marker but fair at the same time. This guy rocks the house, always makes class fun, even when you can tell he's tired or swamped with marking to do. Very approachable. Don't go near Leduc, she's a ****!
He's a really really great teacher I've ever had. Really care and always give his best for his students. Many homeworks for the first time, after that, weekly quizes. If you work hard, promise u can get an A. I always get 9/10 and 10/10 for his quizes :)
excellent teacher!!two thumbs up~

he is Great!!!.. is always fun to be in his class and listen to his stories ~^^ however, he is quite a hard marker and with high expectation.. he will take off points in your test even if you don't write japanese nicely
Very fun guy. Gives lots of homework but it's homework that's straightfoward, easy, and learnable. Very approachable too for help. One of the best teachers I've had
Hayashi sen sei's exams are challenging. However,he is a very dedicated instructor. I believe once you take a Japanese course with him, you'll love it. Trust me! Study hard, an A is no problem.
he is a good teacher, but to get high marks, it is very difficult, he takes japanese grammar as difficult as english, but to learn japanese, choose him is a good choice
hard hard and hard....jap department is the worse department in langara. markers are all picky and terrible and sooooooo biased.

very hard exams!!!

He is cute. But his Mid terms and finals are damn hard. Dun take his Japanese class if u wanna take this class for credits.
everybody is right is saying he is a hard marker and gives alot of homework, but it is helpful in the end. As someone who is 4th year japanese major I look back and appreciate all the work he gave me and realize now that it's not that hard, wait for ubc.
He is very very cute and funny guy. its definelly enjoyable to take his class. u can really learn japanese from him! i really like him.

great teacher!!he explains very clearly, his exams are ok as long as you study.funny, patient and helpful!!i like him!!!!!!
a little hard exams but he is very funny and more importantly he knows how to teach. If u really wanna learn Japanese, take his course. highly recommanded!!
he's a funny guy but his tests are pretty hard if u dun study enough =S he's a pretty good teacher tho and gives u a lot of helpful info
No Comments
i dun understand why ppl say that his tests are hard...his tests are so straight forward unless you skip or just don't study at all...trust me, go see him in his office more often, you will find him as a really really cool guy...he shares lots things with you...and seriously he made me love japanese
He's AWESOME! Hayashi sensei is very helpful, funny, & nice. Just try to do as much exercises as you can in the yellow book. Fair exams. He's great for anyone who really wants to learn Japanese. :)
whatever, this teacher is not awesome!!!He is too narrow minded!! He doesn't explain things very good. He seems like a nice teacher but, he really isn't!! Doesn't actually teach a class rather, makes students do work form a yellow book. My god, don't take his crap of a class.!!!!
All about vocabularies and basic grammars. ALthought it is not an easy course, follow his instruction. Memorize them, u can get good grade!
i wont say it's an easy course, cuz i have 4 more courses to study. i got A- in midterms but B+ finally. .btw, do homeworks,go to class, write notes, memorize. you can get good grade for sure! now it seems easy right? ^^ good for ppl really want to learn japanese.
very good teacher. the tests? well, u really need to study to get good grades. If u really want to learn Japanese, take his class~!!! I learned a lot.

relly good teacher, his teaching is clear, though hard marker. Howver,if we want to learn,we have to study and do hw....I found his class fun to take.
So you have to study a bit, big deal. Hayashi is an awesome teacher, I wanted to keep going to Langara just to take the rest of his classes. I thought his workbook was useful, i'm still referring to it at UBC
Well, not really a good teacher in my opinion. However I still didn't figure if it was me or he really doesn't know how to explain things. The worst part is that he would never say that something is bad so if you ask your grade during the term he'll say that it can be better but you'll never know untill the end. The yellow book is not very clear.
Hayashi is the best language teacher i've ever had. While his class is very demanding and quite difficult his teaching style is great. His explanations are very precise and he goes out of his way to help you ... if you ask! He is passionate about teaching and that definetly shows in his classes. Great teacher, cool guy be willing to work hard.
the best prof i've had out of all the profs i've had. If you study and go to class his tests isn't hard because whatever's in the test,he's gone through with us in class already.Quizzes are very easy & he gives out bonus marks too! Although i didn't like the Aural/Oral tests..he makes class fun, always says something funny in class, he's nice!
i failed the first mid-term and i got about 52% on the second.i asked him if it was possible for me to make it and he told me that i just had to study a little more 'coz according to my quizzes & oral it wasn't bad at all.so i did...and i got a D,i can't go on just 'coz he didn't tell me that i was better dropping it.i'd say that i'm pretty mad...
wonderful language teacher..strict but reasonable..midterms are ok..final is a little bit hard since there're so many things to test..very clear lectures..very organized..notes are useful..oral test is not easy..need to be really prepared..very good teacher to go with..highly recommanded..
Ok.for the ppl that think this teacher is so good you better think again.!! He is unclear when he teaches and he goes on about other things in his personal life.Don't take this slack of a class better off in a diff language like chin.. he is such a push over.Oral tests are hard and his lessons plans are boring!!!!!! get a life ppl
he teaches alright, some things are unclear just because the courses itself cannot cover everything in detail, but he expects you to know everything in detail. he's a picky marker, and the grading is very strict. 2% and you're on the next up and down grade... weird. i study hard and i end up with a C+, and the class average is relatively low...
just memorized the dialouges from each lesson. you will do really well. i got a easily. this teacher is really nice and he's funny too.
After over 7 years of styding the language, he is still the best Japanese teacher I've ever had. Japanese is not an easy language to master, even in the beginning courses, but if you work hard, study a lot, and ask for help if you need it, you'll do fine.
i love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love this fun teacher~nice person & neat notes! everything is really easy but final is hard!before the final, try to memorizing each words he told you! that's the real answer for your final sheets!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE HAYASHI SENSEI! he is a great, awesome teacher! he is very professional, very passionated about teaching. i took all of his classes and love them all!! his exam is hard but it pushes you more to study this language. LOVE LOVE HIM!!!!! he will for sure like you if you work hard!!!
Hayashi's yellow books that he gives all the students for free are awesome and really helpful, great study tools. He is friendly and helpful. His class is really hard... but I've known people to do really well in it. I think language is really hard so it's not Hayashi's fault. He makes students want to study hard.
Hayashi-sensei is incredible. In the two classes before him, I had the teacher where I learned so little and was confused by so much. After taking Hayashi-sensei's course, Japanese is so much clearer to me and I feel like I can actually practice the language now. If you're going to learn Japanese at Langara college, Hayashi-sensei is the man!!
enjoyed his class very much. I especially found the kanji lessons the most interesting. Hayashi sensei is very helpful whether in class or outside of class. He is always friendly and funny. i could only wish there were more awesome teachers like Hayashi at langara. tests are not easy at this level but if you study you will do well.
Hayashi is great and makes learning Japanese fairly easy. However he is extremely adamant about attendence which is a pain. He's nice and encouraging. His marking is tough but fair and he tries to help you out for future tests/assignments. Also, he's definitely eye candy!
great teacher =) In his lesson, you have a chance to know a bit history, culture of Japan. Fun class. Quizzes are very straight forward (study your vocab!) midterms and final are fair. Classes are often behind schedule though, so at the end of the semester he might go over the materials a bit rush.
The Best. What else can I say...oh, his age is a secret. It is said that if you find out his age, he will kick you~
i love him!!!the most interesting class i had!
Strict as hell in 1117 but still nice. don't get the book, just take pics of the dialogue and vocab parts at store. don't take 1117 unless you really like jpn and want to learn. GRADING SCALE HARDER 75=C+
His midterms are straight forward. His marks are fair, gives marks for trying to answer. Awesome teacher! Highly Recommanded.
He's super helpful. Lecture is very nice and clear. Even tho i failed in his class n dropped out. but i still luv him !!! TAKE HIS CLASS if ur planning to take japanese !!!
Hayashi Sensei is the best teacher I have ever had. He's very interesting and intelligent. Attend every class and review a little every night & you can get a good grade easily. Just put the effort in and this class is easy. He is a great teacher who explains everything so well. The most helpful teacher I have ever had, always willing to answer and
cool teacher~
he is the hardest teacher, attending his class, only feels stress! its true it's not boring if you like to answer his questions. little bit picky marker
Hayashi sensei is the best of the best teacher in Langara...He's so nice and well organized. He's willing to answer any questions you may have and very patient. Though he's a picky marker on the Japanese characters and Jan-Eng translation, you may still get an easy "A" as long as you attend classes.
Wonderful teacher!
If you really want to learn something, take Mr. Hayashi's class. He's a very methodical and responsible teacher, with strong Japanese characteristics. Be strict with yourself and try your best, you'll find the semester paying!
Hayashi makes learning fun. Very approachable and caring. he has one of the most nerve racking aural/oral tests ever but overall this teacher is a two BIG thumbs up!! highly recommended
this class is useless. no fun to attend and you will hate this course.
Awesome !! Teaches well, gives clear examples, and very talented !! He states a few things in the first class about what to do and NOT to do in class. If you keep the basic promises (like being on time) and show your participation in class, he is soooo rewarding !! LOVE HIM =) HOT HOTHOT !!
super great teacher!Fun class and good attitude!
oh my god the best language teacher ever! really helpful.. clear instruction..yet cute jokes :D
He really knows how to introduce a new language to adult students and gives us tips on how to study a language at our age. He's also strict and expects you to work ahead class. It takes a lot of self-studying to do well in his class but he's also very willing to help when help is needed.
there is only 3 JAPN profs in langara, I have attended all of theirs classes. Feel like Hayashi sensei is the only Japanese in langara..i mean to me. heard takei is good as well...(I joined her class but I left to drop it ) anyway, Hayashi sensei knows how to teach Japanese! his classes if full of fun! all of JAPAN pros are very strcit by the way.
Best Japanese teacher ever!! Adorable!
I think Hayashi Sensei is awesome ! He knows how to keep the class focused on the material but also entertaining as well. I hope that I can have him as a teacher again ! =)
This was an absolutely fantastic prof. Best one I've had so far in Western Canada.
He's a great teacher! He really knows how to teach the material well and is always willing to help. He expect you to practice and know your material. The best teacher in Langara
Actually it's not hard to get an A in his class if u really work hard and focus on what he said.
There is a lot of work in this class. Hayashi-sensei is a very strict marker. oral test is really hard! 1 hour long, he will ask a question, then after asking, choose a student to answer, so you never know when its your turn. Also took 1215 with Takei who was much easier.
His lecture was very interesting an helpful! There were quizes that kept you studying and practicing more~
Awesome prof, he makes sure you understand everything and is willing to help you out =D
This was the one class I loved during my first semester. His classes are quite engaging and interesting. I don't at all recall a time in class of which I was bored. It's a language course (therefore a lot of material/vocab), so you're sort of expected to work if you want to do well.
Mr.Hayashi is awesome!I like him so much because his course is interesting and helpful! You can totally enjoy Japanese language and culture through his course.Work hard you will get A for sure.He will always help you if you have problems.
I am taking Jap1217 now and I'm doing good in this class. Very helpful and fun prof! He gets everyone in class to engage in answering questions. His tests are not hard if you study the grammar note book. He is extremely willing to help and he's very nice in person.
Took 1217 last semester and it was amazing. He's THE BEST Japanese teacher at Langara. He's REALLY helpful and approachable! Super open to ANY curiosities with the language; even if it's not in the curriculum. He is quite the hard marker though! Make sure you know your Kanji!!!
A great prof who is willing to help all the time. However, the standard for japanese course is too high. Also, we are the first class of using new textbooks. He has too much stuff to cover and you won't have time to memorize all. In truth, you can learn so much from him, but you won't get high grade.
A lot of homework to do by yourself, but it really helps if you try it before the class. Very detailed presentation with a extra organized grammar book. Although my English is not very proficient, I achieved sufficient marks in translating the two languages.
really good professor, always be nice and helpful. Interesting lectures and a lot of homework
Easily the best Japanese teacher at Langara. He involves you deeply in the subject matter. Also just a great guy.
Strongly recommendedVery helpful teacher. Explain every grammar clearly. You can really learn a lot in his class
Best. Just the best JAPN instructor in Langara. Moreover, I haven't seen any teachers whose teaching skill is better than Choji. Mid terms and Final seem little bit tough, but his teaching is so clear and you will do well if you spend much time.
Nice prof, but picky marker (may not be him but his student marker). Very picky about penmanship. Class was pretty hard. Will pick on you to speak in class. Quizzes are on vocab and are easy, tests are not. Will deduct marks for absences.
Overall, very nice and helpful teacher. But can be a very difficult marker. Make sure you pay attention in class and ASK if you are unsure about something. DON'T skip classes or else you're going to fall behind.
An extremely helpful teacher. Will patiently answer all your questions regarding Japan or Japanese. Materials and instructions are pretty straight forward. I took both his 1115 and 1215 and planning to go for the next level. Quizzes are easy, exams are not tough either if you study. So far the best instructor at Langara I've ever had!
The best Japanese professor I ever had. Super helpful, dedicated and enthusiastic. Many people complained about him being a tough marker. But hey doesn't it help you to be more detailed oriented and meticulous? Just work hard work hard and work hard in his class, and you will nail it. Btw, his guitar, painting, calligraphy, and singing are amazing!
he's funny and engaging, but it's tough to take two languages in one semester so I had to drop the course because I didn't know what was going on. He's was really kind because he allowed me to attend the classes even if I dropped it, only because I paid for it. He picks on you through the attendance sheet every class, so you really have to prepared
The real concept of Sensei: he does not only care about technicalities and grammar, he also care about culture, values and respect. Probably the best explaining why use this marker or do not use it and everything makes sense but ! Expect a tough grader and never skip classes (5% of the final grade on just attendance and participation) . Cheers !
If your serious about learning Japanese then Choji Hayashi is easily the best choice. He knows everything about the language and can answer your questions effectively. Often Japanese teachers find it difficult to explain to English speakers how the grammar works. This isn't the case for Hayashi. He is simply amazing and it shows.
A really good teacher
Great teacher, yes. However, his exams are very difficult - BE WARNED. Verging on unnecessarily difficult. Which is shame because it is very demoralizing/discouraging (honours student here so laziness is not my problem). Im assuming that this is a "weed-out" class so if you are not dedicated don't bother continuing on to this level.
He's a good person and a very animated teacher, he tends to focus on the lecture and neglect the other aspect of actually speaking Japanese. My previous Japanese class was filled with talking, the prof would teach us the grammar and then have us talk to the person next to us, With hayashi I have gone weeks without saying a word to my neighbor.
He is rlly nice and explains rlly well if u dont get something just go to his office! He will explain again but u must check the office hours before u go. Theres a quiz almost once a week but its not a pop quiz. He uploads all the exam preparation it will help u a lot.
Hes defitniley a good instructor , but theres just way too much interacting with other classmates, and he calls you out a lot. Also the chairs are so uncomfortable .but as long as you follow along what hes saying youll ace the course , its very straightforward and theres no suprises. There are quizzes every week but its almost always vocab
By far the best prof I have ever had the privelage of taking a course with. He really cares about helping his students succeed and is very understanding towards students who show they are making some effort. Wish I could have took more classes with him!
Explains things really well and makes things easy to understand. His tests are kind of difficult though but if you actually want to learn Japanese then his class will help you a lot.
Best prof I've ever had in Langara period. Very accessible through emails, office hours and really wants to help you understand and learn. Wish he taught the other japanese classes more frequently because after having his class I dont wanna take it with another professor!
When you attend his class, you can see clear differences between his teaching style and other teachers. I think this is based on his major. He can let you feel that 'learning a language can be a very easy thing'. Don't skip the class and try to review everything he said in the class will give you a good grade.
Hayashi is a really funny and caring teacher - I honestly enjoyed my class with him, but had to withdraw. If you're going to take his course, be prepared for weekly 50+ vocab, on top of grammar plus learning characters/numbers/ these things. It's very heavy, but if u take 3 classes u can probably manage. He's a funny guy, but class is hard.
Hayashi is a very nice teacher. Accessible during office hours. Grading criteria is very clear. Participation matters. Takes attendance twice per class, forbids cellphones or food/drink. Extremely test heavy and grading is super tough - there are no half marks! Not a GPA booster. Not recommended if you're slow to learning languages.
Literally the best Japanese prof at Langara. He is very inspirational and knowlegable, and accessible outside of class. His first Mid-term is easy however the 2nd Mid-term and the final exam is quite difficult if you have trouble understanding the grammar section of each lesson.
Good at explaining things and hilarious. 5% for attendance; assignments (kanji writing) doesn't need to be correct, only for participation, vocab quiz everyweek 10% mid, final are not hard if cover everything in green book but he's tough grader (must be perfect ea ans) listening and oral test at this level. Overall, have to be hardworking at this lv
assign(20%) (need to check for accuracy) and quizzes (20%) every 2 weeks, aural/oral test (30%) final (30%). Tests are 100% multiple choices but can't go back previous page. Zoom hours everyweek and highly recommended, will have practices and review of last quiz.
Hayashi sensei is a pretty good teacher if you really want to learn something. He checks every assignment carefully and gives meaningful feedback. Also, you need to be prepared for his class or you may not feel satisfied with all the pop-up questions in class. He also gives thorough instructions before every quiz to make sure you don't feel lost.
I took Hayashi-sensei's Japanese 1215 class this past summer; he had a good sense of humour and shared some interesting anecdotes about life in Kyoto. He seemed to be a bit particular about kanji accuracy, but he did post how-to videos on writing the kanji characters and their origins. Fun and enlightening class, overall.
He is definitely one of Langara's best Japanese teachers. Homework and quizzes are given every two weeks. All you need to do is copy kanji and write small compositions, and the exams are multiple-choice questions. He will also attach interesting comments and suggestions to your composition.
I love his lecture
Hayashi is a fantastic professor who really cares about his students and making sure that people understand the material. The class is well structured and despite the pace being fast he makes learning Japanese easy. Be warned, if you miss many classes and don't watch most of the lectures posted online, you will struggle in the course.
Hayashi is nice and is a hardworking prof. There's a lot to do each week, but if you keep up with the lectures, vocab and drill book if you want to aim for an A!
He is a super friendly and understanding professor and makes learning Japanese very fun, I'm very excited to take his class again in summer semester!
Best prof Ive had at Langara. Hes amazing, and genuinely cares about the well-being and education of his students. The class can be very difficult if you arent passionate about learning Japanese as there is a lot of new content, but if you are prepared for that, he is definitely the best. Also sung us a beautiful song at the end of the semester!
The goat. Simply put. Amazing teacher that provides clear and concise details to what he is expecting from his students while making an enjoyable classroom experience. If you are wanting to learn Japanese, learn it with this teacher. He does mark hard when it comes to homework, but he always tries to make sure his students are learning!
I found this professor very co-operative, is best. Instead of just giving lectures he also provide beneficial information. His way was too good. may god gives him long life and he could teach many more students as he can. Thank Professor Choji for wonderful class.
Hayashi-sensei is a great and engaging prof who cares about his students and wants to make sure that they learn, but he's very strict. Attendance is a must. Even when you have a reason for not being there, he might still deduct marks. Neat handwriting and proper penmanship is a must. He will deduct marks if it isn't up to his standard.
He is definitely one of the best Japanese professors in Vancouver. He even organizes a party after the final exam.
One of the most dedicated and hardworking professors at Langara. Puts so much effort into helping students learn (created his own workbook) and makes the grading criteria very clear. Gives students a lot of prep time for exams. A lot is self taught at home and apply knowledge in class. Lectures are fun and interactive!
Amazing instructor!!! He really cares about the students and their success. He grades fairly and his classes are great. I would recommend him to anyone interested in taking japanese at Langara!
If you do not have previous idea on what Japanese is, you would not get an A. However, Mr Hayashi is a good teacher who can teach you lots of Japanese stuff especially about his home town Kyoto. Enjoy!
Hayashi is the best teacher I have ever met. His teacher is clear and interesting. He prepares for the classes and replies emails within 24 hours. He is nice and friendly. You don't want to miss any of his class. He gives vivid examples so I remember what he taught with little effort. I wish he was my professor when I took JAPN1115.
His content is really heavy. His expectation is sky high. Our speaking tests took place on Saturday. It was not just us who got overwhelmed by the amount of content, always asked us to rely on the video lectures. I learned a new content a day before the final exam at his "workshop". If you are majoring Japanese, he'll get the best, 200% out of you!
One of the best teachers on campus. Super fun lectures and caring attitude. Unlike many other teacher, he actually cares about you learning something from his classes and puts in a lot of effort in teaching. He is a little specific about handwriting but If you have the motivation to learn Japanese: take his class without hesitation!!
Amazing professor. even though I took this class in the morning, he can make the classroom very lively and fun. 10/10 would recommend, I would definitely take his classes again even if theyre at 8:30 am. Pretty tough grader so you should watch his video series/lectures to get good grades. He takes attendance mark too so dont skip
Excellent instructor. Very approachable, great at teaching the material, very organized, and excellent feedeback.
Super engaging, passionate and hardworking. Fast with emails. Tells personal stories that teach you more than just the language. Kinda high standards for handwriting (assignment marking can be harsh). Quizzes nearly every week, but there are lenient oral tests that balance the mark. If you're passionate about Japanese, you'll have an amazing time.
I enjoyed my journey to learn Japanese with him. He even shares all the materials for the next level of lectures (1215), allowing students to study in advance.
He comes to class late frequently and has high standards for others except for himself. The assignment grading is really weird, I've seen them mark the same work differently when submitted twice. I still don't really understand why a Japanese course is strict with midterm viewing and assignment grading standards like it's not a chemistry course lol
Hayashi is a great prof who really cares about students learning. The class is challenging but manageable if you stay on top of the material. unstuck study was a huge help for study prep - highly recommend checking it out!
Hayashi is very tough grader . Don't take his class !
Hayashi is a difficult teacher. His teaching methods are off and not great. It makes the class 10x harder than it needs to be. Not only that, he makes the exams so hard, even though he barely teaches us the lesson. If you're going to take this class with him. Hayashi is unfair, and not a great teacher if you are trying to learn Japanese
He is very accessible outside of class, and understanding. As a professor he is very unorganized, tough grader and lecture heavy which is unreasonable for a beginners Japanese class, his tests were also unreasonably difficult. if you don't have previous knowledge of Japanese please save yourself and don't take his class, you will deeply regret it.
Love this guy, super passionate in what he's teaching. Definitely recommend taking him as my lecturer, just be aware that his joke are pretty funny and you might laugh about that all night:)
PROS: - Very thorough with lectures and also includes lecture videos. - Kind teacher, is willing to work to support your learning. - As long as you practice a lot and understand the concept, you're fine. CONS: - Difficult grading for hiragana/katakana/kanji writing assignments. - Sped through the last section (te-form) before the final.
