Really great guy with a real heart for chemistry. Knows the subject incredibly well, and does a good job with the rather hard material. The tests are very basic. His wonderful stale humor is a marvel to behold.
Stay awake in lecture, he cuts the lights off a lot and does slide shows... it's DEADLY! Also- keep up w/ the reading in the book... you'll be glad you did ;) And don't slack off on the Problem Sets... that's bad too :)
Everything you dread about orgo is true, but if you ahve to go through it, prof abelt is an excellent teacher.
Prof Abelt is an amazingly patient and accessable teacher. He is very easy to learn from as well.
ohhh man, it is a HARD class. but if you keep up with the work, and read the slides, and do the problem sets, it's manageable. find people who understand it and get help from them, or maybe approach abelt himself . . . i was always too scared to do that
Not a great lecturer but a nice guy and helpful during ofice hours. Do the homework and read the text thoroughly and you'll be ok.
orgo is hard, but chris does a pretti good job teaching it. sometimes he gets a lil confoosing and goes through the material too fast, but go to the review sessions and he'll clear everithing up.
Just wait for the Gummie Bear's song....
Great guy! Really funny and very personable! Class is challenging, but it's not his fault.
Great guy
Albelt is a very confusing teacher and does not lecture well. He does not seem to care about the students at all and has his TAs do all the grading. He is very unapproachable.
Abelt is a great guy. Don't be scared by his boring facade. Go to the problem sessions and do the work... it's a big time commitment, but Abelt makes orgo really straightforward.
He's just so cute!
He's absolutly horrible. There is really nothing else to say and it's a pity that all students are forced to take his incredibly mundane, retarding class.
He makes a lot of nerdy chem jokes and offhand comments that keep me awake. He lets us out early and he's been teaching the stuff so fast that we're getting a class period off. He's a really easy grader, but the problem sets are super hard. The tests are hard too, but he gives really easy extra credit.
Prof Abelt is absolutely wonderful. He is extremely fair and tells you exactly what to expect on tests. While sometimes he goes pretty fast in class, he's always happy to talk to you about something you didn't understand or show you his notes on something you missed after lecture. He's easy to meet with, as he is often doing lab work in Rogers.
I hated his Orgo 2 class, after I loved taking Orgo 1. This is the first time I have taken a chemistry class anywhere that I did not genuinely enjoy on some level. Dr. Abelt's style of teaching is a black hole for enthusiasm on the subject of organic chemistry. All you do is sit there and listen to him talk about reactions.
take advantage of office hours! advanced organic chemistry is hard but he will help you if you put in the effort.
Dr. Abelt is a fantastic professor who is very clear and organized. There's no ambiguity in what he wants, but he still makes it challenging. Advanced Orgo was a godsend after Orgo I and II - we didn't just learn mechanisms, we learned how they actually worked. Highly recommend to anybody interested in organic chem (bio majors included).
I hated this class!! He did not do a good job of explaining anything, just sort of rambled through his notes without engaging the class. Do not take orgo with him if you can avoid it.
Really hard to understand because he's super quiet but kind of funny sometimes. Does a really good job of showing through examples on the board however even if at first he is really confusing.
Abelt is hard to understand in class because the material is hard to understand. He LOVES to help you if you show interest during office hours, in emails, or after class. Kind of dry, but if you read the book directly before/after class you will be prepared.
Really hard class...he tries but is not too helpful during lectures. Problem sessions are a huge help...if you don't do well on the first test go to the chem dept office and find a tutor, the first test is a pretty fair indicator. Good luck!
A very kind man, talks very quietly so sit up front. It's a really, really boring class, but the material is boring, so go figure. Go to help sessions--some questions on tests are gone over during them. Go to him for help, he's really nice about it.
This man is boring. Had him for Orgo 1 - absolutely hated the class and got a C, even though I loved Orgo 2 and got an A. He has a really soft voice and used powerpoint for everything...after a while, I stopped going to class because I just fell asleep every day. Went to ask him for help and he was like, "There, there" but didn't help me any.
Lectures like a textbook reads: tends to string together every big word in a chapter into a single sentence, and unless you read before it before class, you won't know what he said- ALWAYS READ BEFORE CLASS! Tests seemed to get progressively harder- go to review sessions, study old tests! Final was as hard as midterms. Nice guy though...
Abelt does a good job of teaching the material. The tests are similar to the problem sets, you will RARELY get a curve ball. Unfortunately I didn't discover this until late in the semester but make sure to use his office hours, especially before tests. He basically tells you what you need to know and explains things very clearly and succinctly.
One of the smartest and best teachers I've ever encountered. Problem sets and old tests are key, as are problem sessions.
Hard class. Hard material. Love the professor, though I didn't learn anything from him (reading the book is where it's at).
OrgoChem is a hard subject, but Abelt makes it easy if you put the time into it. First, read chapters before lecture. Second, do the Problem set and suggested end of chapter questions, if you're having difficulty with these, attend his review sessions. Third, before the test make sure you have done his 2008/9 practice test, and you should be good.
I had him for Orgo I, which was a less than enthralling class, but for Adv. Orgo he's just amazing. Fantastic class, hard problem sets but he's willing to help you, and barely takes off points. Tests are EXTREMELY easy, much easier than Orgo I. Haters will hate, but I love the guy.
Abelt is AWESOME. He is really funny if you hear the jokes under his monotonic voice. The tests are easy if you study the material from previous exams. TAKE THE CLASS.
Awesome! If you need to take orgo, take it with Abelt. It's hard material, but he gives you every opportunity to do well, and doesn't try to trick you (which is a welcomed change). Not to mention he's super cool, and incredibly intelligent.
He knows what he is talking about. But at times it doesn't seem like you will be learning much. The tests are extremely predictable because he posts the last two years tests and finals. If you are looking for the easier of the two Chem 206 classes, take Abelt.
Lecture was ok for clarification, but this class is really all about scouring the textbook and doing all of the practice problems. Tests aren't bad because previous years' tests are available and are nearly identical to the tests you'll get. Homework is also helpful for learning, and an easy 10% of your grade.
Prof. Abelt knows his material, but is not very clear sometimes in his teaching of the material. Book use is strongly suggested in his class. Tests from past two years up, but sometimes not helpful.
Abelt is pretty awesome in so many ways.
Abelt a really intelligent professor with the best, most sarcastic sense of humor ever. His tests are almost identical to the practice tests. Probably not as good at explaining things as Harbron, but the tests are easier, so you decide. Read the assigned reading only to help with the multiple choice questions on tests.
Abelt makes orgo easier than it needs to be. Take him over any one else! He's a bit unclear when teaching but his tests are the same as the years before so it's not too hard to study for. Getting an A is definitely possible if you put in enough time.
not very good. his lectures are pointless. if you can teach yourself, take him. if you can't, then don't take him. orgo is hard and his lectures don't help, so use youtube and read the book. definitely go to harbrons lectures and take abelts exams for the best of both worlds.
Abelt makes Orgo Chem as easy as it can get. The material is hard and the class takes a lot of work but Abelt makes it clear what you need to know and is very available to help and explain things you don't understand. The tests are almost identical than past exams. I'd recommend taking Abelt for Orgo. Chem.
i came into orgo I with tons of fear. i actually enjoyed abelts class so much that i considered majoring in chem. his tests are easy and very doable. posts practice exams and pretty easy problem sets that he usually ends up doing for you. extremely knowledgeable of the topic, you gotta work hard for your grade and you can do well!
How great is it that W&M has 2 fabulous Orgo teachers? I took Abelt's summer Orgo class, and I have to say, he was on top of his stuff and made it as easy as possible. I came in afraid of orgo (don't we all?) and walked out feeling pretty okay, and with a better grade than I expected. PAY ATTENTION to the practice tests, the real things are similar
Advanced Organic Chemistry; he's such a great professor and the nicest person ever. the subject itself is hard, but he makes it easier and actually allows you to not freak out. Just learn his teaching method. The first few days in class are overwhelming, but it gets better after a month or 2. Material is hard, you will have to study, but he's great
One of the best professors I've ever had. Brilliant man with a passion for Organic chemistry and for his students. Very helpful if you need him. Powerpoints can be difficult to follow but his examples he does by hand are extremely helpful. Barely used the book. But STUDY THE PRACTICE TESTS HE POSTS- very similar to the real deal. Left with an A.
Excellent professor. Came in scared out of my mind of Orgo and left with an A and an eagerness to take Orgo II. Pay attention to his hand-written examples and study the practice tests- you'll be surprised at how similar they are to the real deal. Book can be helpful to reinforce topics but not necessary. Awesome class.
Dr. Abelt is a great teacher and gives easy tests. He also lets you use old editions of textbooks so I spent less than $15 including shipping on the two textbooks for the class.
Pretty decent overall, not too hard, not too easy
Dr. Abelt is pretty clear and gives great lectures. He's very funny and he even posts his lectures online! He goes very fast in lecture, but because the lectures are on blackboard, I was able to go back and take better notes. His tests can be tricky, but they are short and representative of what we learned in class.
Abelt was a great professor- very clear cut, and gives us many resources to study with. Was always kind and in a good mood during class.
Professor Ablet is by far one of the most thoughtful teachers I know. He was very understanding when I would go to his office hours and ask him several questions. Exams are kinda tough, but if you review the homework and go to his office hours you'll be fine. Make sure to take advantage of the review sessions. They're more helpful than you'd think.
Don't let the 8 AM scare you, Abelt's tests are much easier than Walk's. Abel talks fast but since he posts podcasts of his lectures, you can always go back and make more thorough notes. Orgo takes a lot of work o begin with but Abelt is very helpful. He makes a lot of dad jokes.
Professor Abelt is a pretty cool guy. He gives partial credit on tests and homework assignments. He has a dry sense of humor. He records his lectures, so it won't kill you to miss class!!
Good Professor, Organic Chemistry is just hard. Partial credit will be your best friend in this class, and make sure you understand the stuff for concepts and not just memorization.
Do not let the 8am scare you!! He has a very soft voice so you need to sit at the front of the class, but a plus side of that is that you get to hear all the jokes he makes under his breath. He is passionate about Chemistry and if you go to his office hours he will stay as long as you need, talking about chemistry or just life in general! 11/10
Professor Abelt is an amazing professor that made going to 8 am lecture enjoyable, and orgo understandable. He's really accessible outside of class for any help you might need. Overall, I highly recommend him.
Abelt was an amazing professor, especially since I was concerned about taking orgo for the first time. You don't have to go to class, b/c his lectures are online, but I would recommend going anyway. Def sit near the front of the class because he does not speak super loud. He also does a review every Sunday. 4 tests, final, homework.
Abelt is a blessing in disguise. Be aware, organic chemistry itself is a very hard class. He is not the greatest lecturer (kind of dull and hard to follow), but he gives you 2 practice exams that look just like the one you will take, so they are easy compared to others. ALSO, he has 4 exams, but drops the lowest grade!
Abelt is essentially Bob Ross if Bob Ross was a Chemistry Professor. I had him for Orgo I two years ago which was terrible because it was an 8am class and his style put me right to sleep. But now i have him for advanced orgo in the afternoon and honestly, i love it. He's funny and class almost feels meditative. It's weird but it works.
Abelt is a very good professor. Tests are fair but hard and he provides multiple old exams to help prepare. Likeable guy. READ AND STUDY ALL TEXTBOOKS LISTED - necessary for test preparation.
Abelt is extremely intelligent. However, that doesn't necessarily equate to a good professor. His lectures were hard to follow and I felt like I never learned the material from the actual lectures. His tests were not THAT difficult, but I didn't know any of the material on the exams. Tests didn't really match content that we learned.
One of if not the best professor I've had at W&M. The ease with which he flows through the material while explaining it in a concise, easily understandable manner (and his dry humor) made each lecture a pleasure. The way in which he structured the class (10 problem sets & 2 tests) make it so you can focus on the concepts instead of the workload.
He is nice enough, obviously very smart. But a bad lecturer. He's monotone and quiet. He's not very approachable. He breezes through his lectures without clearly explaining the big ideas. I leave class not even knowing what the topic is because he only talks about the details. Maybe he thinks we already know the topics, but ochem is new to us.
Organic Chemistry 1 is the hardest class I've ever taken, but Professor Abelt made it bearable. His lectures were informative and clear and he held weekly review sessions. He is very quiet so I would recommend sitting near the front. His tests were very fair and he curved them all and dropped one.
Orgo is an extremely difficult class, but Prof Abelt is a solid choice. There are four exams, but one exam is dropped. Your grade is based almost entirely on exams. Weekly review sessions are helpful.
Professor Abelt is a great choice for Organic Chemistry. He is a clear lecturer, and I loved his dry humor, definitely made 8am Orgo much more bearable. I liked that we had 4 exams and the lowest is dropped, compared to my friends in other sections that only had 3. The old exams he posts are super helpful to practice.
Honestly, he is one of the best teachers I've had yet. During the COVID online class, he offered multiple opportunities to get online and ask questions. He has 4 tests and drops the lowest. He is hilarious, though he only does 8am orgo 1. Nice dude.
His lectures were very hard to follow and the exams were super difficult.
Orgo 1 is hard, especially at 8 am, so be wary of bad reviews. That's really not Abelt's fault. He's a funny guy, so lectures can be fun if you pay attention, and he gives tons of practice exams, so there is never a question as to what will be tested.
prof Abelt was the best professor I've ever had. I took him spring 2020 where we transitioned to online learning and he was the most understanding and caring professor during that time. He was accessible outside of class and very kind. His tests are extremely fair, nothing unexpected unless you didn't study
Professor Abelt explains everything clearly, but he makes everything complicated. Do not try to go for this one. His exams are deeper than other professors' and cover more content. Our first exam average was 20 pts lower than prof scheerer's session.
He covers a lot of concepts and his lectures are very close to what the textbook has. His lectures are boring but he has recordings, which is good. He has 4 midterms compared to other professors' 3 (can drop 1). His exams are hard; MCQ's are random and difficult. The final is not cumulative. If you are not planning to major Chem, take someone else.
If you study before exams you should be fine. Exams were mostly fair but MC sections had very random and specific questions you couldn't study for where I always felt like I was guessing. Recorded all lectures so I didn't have to go to his class at 8 am which was nice. Very quiet prof though-could barely hear him speak half the time but good prof.
Professor Abelt was a very good teacher to have for Orgo 1. Orgo 1 is a naturally difficult class but he did not over complicate it. Lectures were recorded. I struggled to hear him especially in the beginning with masks. He always held a review session day b4 test and gave old tests. If you studied all the old test and reviews you should be fine.
He is not approachable outside class. He curves everyone down because we did better than in previous years. It takes a lot of out-of-class efforts to follow the lectures and exam content. The worst orgo prof.
Professor Abelt is a bit of a boring lecturer. By far he is the toughest orgo 1 professor. He has a scale where 25% of students get an A, then B, and so on. If the average is too high he may curve it down so be prepared to compete with your classmates for that top 25%. I find the grading scale extremely unfair. Plus is that final is not cumulative
Highly recommend Prof Abelt for Orgo 1. He's so accessible outside of class and even holds review sessions on Sundays throughout the semester for the chapter problem sets on Achieve. Office hours are very helpful because it's like another lecture if a lot of people go or you can just ask your questions individually if not a lot of people go.
Solid choice for Orgo if you can keep up with 8AMs. Exams are very straightforward & questions are predictable bc he gives out old exams. He holds review/problem sessions every sunday afternoon. Lectures however can be kinda boring, he's not the best lecturer but will make sure you know everything you need to know for exams.
The easiest orgo 2 prof, just remember the review slides that he gave you and recognize what each reagent does. Lots of test compared to other section but he drop one test and grade based on the average. Final NMR question was kinda hard but overall easy class
Professor Abelt is very straightforward which I appreciate. 4 Orgo 2 exams plus a final can be a lot to handle but I think it was better overall because there was not as much content on each besides the final. The only thing I didn't like was that the homework was -5% for each attempt which is frustrating because of Achieve.
This class is very straightforward until the final. Dropped my grade from an A to A-!! Hard final but nothing else is bad at all.
LOVE professor Abelt. He's given us a practice exam for all 5 exams. He drops the lowest exam grade. He gives a throwaway (essentially) question on every exam. He gives us homework that is essentially a free 14%. He gives a test review for every exam. And in my opinion he's really funny. I think he's good at teaching orgo, and I
He gives you past exams that look similar to his present exams. Make sure to go to the Sunday sessions for homework answers- the hw grade is calculated into the final. Make sure to go to lectures, he talks about topics for the multiple choice in lecture- I only got a B+ because I didnt study for the mcq. The final is not nearly hard as people say.
