Very intelligent teacher with fast-paced lectures. Not the best at answering student questions. Tries to incorporate a lot of group work into class periods. Reading and writing assignments are fairly heavy in this class, so make sure you have the time.
Alot of work, bases grades on two big papers in which he grades extremly hard. DO NOT TAKE!!
I had Micro online with him and thought it was much better than the lecture-type class. It's a lot of work, but if you stay on top of things, it's not too bad. He was really helpful when I went in for questions.
He doesn't really teach at all, but the fact that he lets us get into groups helps alot. We kinda learn from eachother!
He sounds like he knows alot but is very hard to understand. Would not take again.
Hard class that I don't think he did well in relaying. Tests were hard and lots of homework.
Rambles on, talks to himself... Doesn't ever directly answer questions. Hard class, bad teacher.
FRUSTRATING, both the class and the teacher.
He is a very good teacher and he is also funny. He is always approachable and one of the fairest teachers I have ever had. He has a lot of group work that helps you learn.
Look likes George Costanza from Sienfeld. HAHA! Very funny teacher in a goofy way. His test are extremely difficult, be prepared to study a lot. He will sometime talk to himself during lectures but is very knowledgable. Has a hard time delivering the content to students.
This teacher does not teach. He puts you into groups and lets you figure out the book for yourself. When you try to get him to answer q's he will answer them but your not going to understand. His tests are impossible but the group work is fine if there wasnt group work everyone would fail.
Very helpful, lets you know what will be on the test. If you complete the study guide that comes with the book you will do very well on his tests. Overall really nice guy.
Very Unhelpful, Blares instead of teaches, did not learn a thing from his class, nothing new that is, Very hard to understand, NEVER GOES OVER Tests or Rats, at least he could go over the whole test or quiz so i could understand why i got the ones wrong, wrong, and could learn something but no. DO NOT TAKE HIM
This guy knows his stuff. I took him online and he was very responsive to e-mails. The flip side is the amount of homework, it'll keep you busy. Lastly, if you miss anything you better make ti up, because it will be on the test.
Take the class if you like working in groups...doesn't do much lecturing, group work is pretty easy, and that makes up the highest percentage of your grade.
By far the worst teacher I have ever had. He makes you take test on the units BEFORE you even learn about them. Doesn't go over the test with you at all, and doesn't teach the class at all. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!

very interesting. he doesn't make it boring. lots of group activities. have good examples to relate to reality.
Dont make the same mistake I made, doesnt teach at all or cover course material, puts you into groups for majority of class period where nothing is accomplished, never comes to class so schedules two exams within a week or week and a half period, way too much busy work, honestly, dont bother with this guy
don't make the mistake I did, that is being lazy. This guy makes it too easy to get an A or B and if you can't achieve that, you either were very lazy and didn't care enough, or you shouldn't be going to college (no offense). He did a great job and actually made learning econ pretty fun and interesting!
Fair grading technique. Extremely knowledgable, mildly humorous, and enthusiastic teacher. The books were worthwhile and interesting, mostly. I'm glad I took this class with professor Austin.
Great teacher! He loves Econ and wants everyone to love it too! The work & class is formatted to treat all types of students and there learning styles. He assigns a lot of work but it worth it, if you really want to learn and understand the course material. Serious student should take his class & become an Econ converter like me!
Great guy. Very knowledgeable. has been teaching for a long time!! knows his stuff and knows how to explain it. just put in some effort and you will learn a lot and get a decent grade
who ever makes a negative comment about professor austin is full of it! this guy has to be one of the best teachers ever, he loves what he does and teaches in a way that makes you enjoy economics. (the guy is hilarious) ill be honest it takes a level of effort, but his class is designed for you to do well! he rocks without a doubt!
He is very knowledgable about the subject. I didn't like the amount of homework in the course, but in the end he was very fair in grading. I would recommend this teacher.
good teacher all around
A nice and very helpful teacher. Mr Auston tought me a lot about the busness. This class will help me advance into the busness life. Thank you for teaching me.
Mr. Austin is great teacher, even with a dreadful subject such as economics. He really energizes the whole class and makes you want to be there. You will find yourself looking forward to his lectures. Even though he does not require your attendance, you won't want to miss any classes.
Mr. Austin was very enthusiastic about the subject. I would definately take another one of his courses again.
Mr Austin made a very boring subject more interesting - his tests are tricky however he usually drops at least one. He uses multiple teaching techniques to reach all learning styles. Don't ever forget a paper - he doesn't allow late papers. Overall good prep for 4 year schools.
i thought that mr austin was great. He is about as excited as economics as anyone can be. His stupid jokes helped me to pay attention. economics is a pretty hard subject, and i thought that mr austin did a good job simplifying and explaining the concepts.
I loved hearing him say "mmmm kay" all the time.
WORST PROF EVER! Boring, hard lectures to follow and tests are nothing like lectures. Book is no help either, but have assignments EVERY night about chapters. No attendance, but his tests are all MC, still super hard and he does TRICK YOU on purpose. Not very clear on situations and his spit forms on the side of his mouth every day--gross!
It was funny how often he said MMmmmKay,probably not something that he can help, but besides that he is a very good teacher.
Though I was completely uninterested in the subject, Mr. Austin was a good teacher and his jokes and stories made the class more tolerable.
Mr. Austin is a really good professor! I am not an economist at all, but he made it interesting and is pretty funny. The tests were sometimes tricky, (read the book!) but he evens out the grade with the other homework.
pretty good teacher. he loves economics.
I took this as a summer course so it was a lot to learn in a very short time. Prof. Austin is very interested in his subject, is very clear with explanations, makes himself available for extra help, and is entertaining in class. Read the book and do the practice questions and tests.
Bad teacher. Grades all on group work.
pretty good teacher but you do too much group work and reponse papers are pointless but not that hard
I took the summer class so we moved extremely fast which was kind of difficult. decently easy class if your willing to put the time into reading each chapter and doing all of the practicec exams. great teaher though... funny guy and always keeps class interesting. very knowledgable in econ too! i would definately take him again.
As long as you attened class and do the chapter paper it is fine. He is a fairly easy grader and very helpfull.
He is relaxed and seems to know the subject but I could not figure anything out. It was so hard.
I'm a science major so anything that has to do with business/finance/econ turns me off, I just needed this for generals. But the guy made it interesting, took him over summer. He makes it easy on the students. I had no clue what he and the book were talking about and still managed to pull off an A (which is a 85% btw) Good guy, great professor.
good teacher, keeps ur attention. relates studies to his life with examples. don't buy the book thinking like an economist, you wont use it. attend every class so as to not miss anything. tests somewhat difficult
This class was much more enjoyable than macroeconomics. The tests weren't as difficult as I thought they would be. No grade for attendance made it more enjoyable too. Prof Austin is a cool dude and makes economics enjoyable, interesting, and somewhat easy.
Talks about his life on his farm a lot gets really boring but is nice to have a break from lecture. Work sheets are very helpful to understand material but are nothing like the tests
Mr. Austin was very pleasant to listen to. The class was 4 hours a night two nights a week, and that much time with a professor can be hit or miss. He did a great job.
Nice guy, loves econ, has a nice curve that is pre-set.
Pretty easy class, very nice guy.
Very good teacher, interesting and entertaining anecdotes that relate to real world application of course material. Lots of reading, but keep up and the lectures will be much more interesting.
Very good teacher. Fair, upfront and helpful.
I really enjoyed his class, It really makes me want to pursue business and other economics classes. While the early morning class was a stretch once and a while, I really enjoyed it. I would recommend this professor to anyone!
good overall teacher
I enjoyed this class !!! the professor really knows his stuff, and explains it well. Plus he gives great exercise worksheets that make concepts easier to understand. Exams are easy - provided you read the assigned chapters and go through whatever was discussed in class. i am DEFINITELY taking ECON 2202 with this professor!
He was always prepared and had great worksheets for class & to study for the test. He will answer questions, just be prepared to know what you want to ask. He was great, would take another of his classes, topic is not easy.
This guy is AWESOME! I ended up getting a 36/40 on the final...it was all due to his examples in class!!! he uses a lot of real life scenarios that relate to the information at hand!!! I use the economics material everyday when i am making decisions...
As previous reviews have said, he is great in relating real life examples to economics. This was not my favorite subject prior to this course but he made it absolutely interesting and enjoyable. Grading was fair. I will definitely take any economics courses he teaches as and when I need them.
I would take more courses from Austin even though I don't need them for my degree. Without a doubt, one of the best teachers I've E.V.E.R. had. Dare I say, he made Microecon fun and interesting.
I really enjoyed his Microeconomics class and am taking his Macro class next semester. He is a very good teacher, very helpful. I appreaciated how organized he was and never missed a class. I would and have recommended him to others!
Mr.Austin is really nice teacher. the only thing, his class has only 2 test; midterm and final. Personally I need extra test and he doesnt have that in his class.
It was an interesting but very difficult class. I struggled to get through it. But I liked the professor's humor, and that helped me to grin and bear it all.
One of my favorites! He puts in as much work to this class as he expects his students to. On time, organized and very knowledgable on the subject of Economics! Would recommend!
I took both his Micro and Macroeconomics classes, and would definitely recommend him! He's really organized, never cancels class, relates all concepts to real life situations (so it's easier to understand!), and is very flexible with office hours. oh, and he's got a sense of humor too! :)
Great enthusiasm, extremely knowledgeable, and available for help.
He uses examples well to supplement the reading, though his tests are hard and in both Micro and Macro only a few people got an A, with lots of C's and D's
It is apparent that Dr. Austin is both passionate about the field of economics and teaching. He does a great job of making challenging material less intimidating. He goes above and beyond to ensure material is presented in multiple ways to help engage everyone in the class. He seems to be looking for that light bulb moment in his students.
I would recommend Mr. Austin! He is funny and kept me engaged. The material in this class is not "easy" to understand but his real life examples makes it better. Your grade is based 20% on response papers and 80% on two exams. (exams are not easy but he grades fairly.) The text books you use are cheap compared to the typical books!
Great Prof, loved his methodology and ability to keep the discussions relevent and lively. Learned quite a bit about Macro. Should be useful as I pursue my MBA.
I took Microeconomics from Prof. Austin and it was a great experience. He uses great examples and explains thing thoroughly.Do the daily writing assignments if you take his summer class, it will really help your final grade!
normal guy
he was a good teacher, but for me that subject was too hard, i was almost dead the last day of class
he is good teacher but it's a very hard subject
Instructor is extremely knowledgeable about the subject. He uses real life examples to explain the concepts which is very helpful. Attendance is not mandatory but I highly recommend going to every class. The people who struggled are probably the ones that left during break. Not easy but do the recommended work and you will be fine.
GREAT TEACHER!!! Microeconomics is a very tough subject. Mr. Austin is great at breaking it down with real world examples so you could understand it and learn the material. DEFINATELY TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR.
He is nice teacher. I will advice take him from what ever class he is teachiing.
I admit, he was a great teacher to have. Unfortunately, the summer course I took with him was too hard and his tests were really hard. The tests made no sense and felt like it was worthless to take. If you want to take him for summer course, good luck.
Great professor. I took the accelerated macroeconomics summer course. You need to spend the time on the homework as his tests are what you would expect for a college level course. He is enthusiastic about the subject and seemed to enjoy teaching it as well. He always responded by phone, email and was available at his office as well. A true asset
HE IS AMAZING. Besides being really funny, he is a great teacher. I took macroeconomics with him, and he explains well. We had to read chapters and do tiny vocab quizzes, and even the overall assignments weren't too hard! i say...TAKE HIM. Compared to other teachers, he just made my day sometimes.
Very well versed in economics, though I found his method of teaching to be practically incomprehensible. He made us read chapters in the book that were very difficult to understand with no prior knowledge of the subject, and then in class he never lectured to reinforce the information. He wastes the class period doing activities that don't relate.
Really hard to listen to. He's very nasally and pauses at the end of every...sentence. Drove me nuts. He knows economics but doesn't know how to teach it. Terrible teacher. If you you ask for help or for an answer to a question, he'll just mumble his way around it and won't ever answer in a concise....way. the text book is hard to read as...well.
Stay away from this teacher. He cant communicate in a way that makes sense. The textbook he uses explains the problems using words, hardly any examples so it's very hard to read. He has the most annoying voice you will every hear. It'll make you want to punch a baby. His notes on the board are very messy hard to follow. He assumes everyone gets it.
This teacher is one of the worst i've had. He knows his stuff but really can't teach...which pretty much defeats the purpose. stay away.
all i can say is that there are better teachers out there.
I took his Microeconomics class and I would say he is an okay teacher. He definitely won't sit there and hold your hand through the course so you have to a lot of work on your own. the tests are very challenging. If you are not majoring in this type of field or have no interest, I would probably not want him. He curves his overall grades for C's.
Economics can tough if you don't like it or if it does not interest you. I love it and thought he was a great teacher. If something doesn't make sense he will take time to go over it if you only ask. He knows his stuff, and expects you do your part in class. It was a little rough taking micro and macro as summer courses but i still enjoyed it.
This guy is terrible. Do not take this class. His tests are nothing like what you learn in class. Especially if this is your first econ class, don't take it.
Whatever you do, don't take this class. A lot of the time it seems like this guy is preaching to himself and assumes that you know what he's talking about and where he's whipping out numbers from. Seems like as hard as you try nothing is ever good enough. annoying class
If you like your GPA don't take this class. The tests are ridiculously hard and the teacher is awful.
It was very difficult to keep up with him. It's a very hard course, pointless to take. His learning journals kill. He makes you write a full page 'journal' about what you learned in the past week. Always needed to write this over the weekend. But he drops 3 activities and 1 test.
If it is your first econ class I would not take this teacher. It was my third econ class, his test are moderately difficult, and you MUST go to class and do the learning activities. He is not the most personable person outside of class. If you have had an econ class before you'll do fine.
I didn't know anything about ECON walking into his class, now I plan on transfering to the UofM to get my B.A. in Economics. He gives real life applications to everything you learn, he has a sense of humor and truly wants you to learn. You do have to work for your grade, but you will never regret the knowledge you gain from it. Fantastic class.
I took this class as an online summer course. Instructor is very organized, extremely helpful and very timely. Grades are posted very rapidly. The content isn’t the easiest, so the class takes some effort. Overall, awesome!
Honestly this was the worst class I've ever taken. I am an A student, and I have had all A's in my previous Economics classes. I recieved a D in this course, and I have a 4.0. I studied, and did all the work. His tests are impossible. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE.
I left confused, as did most everyone. Basically has the attitude we'll never get it and won't do anything about it. Frustrating. Class average on tests was a low D. Getting an A is near impossible. Got a B and was in top 5% or so of class. Easy enough to pass but not more than that. Took macro with Herrboldt. So much better!
Cons: The book was super concise and didn't explain things well. Pros: Chris held a Q&A session prior to the tests. He was fabulous at explaining things. Also, the online content contained helpful videos and a self-test for each chapter. Similar questions appeared on the tests. Very helpful. Overall I liked the prof but found micro tough.
I am taking the summer online version of this class and the class pretty much consists of you and the book. You are on your own to learn the material and there is little direction given on what to study for teh tests.
Honestly, the class is challenging for those with limited exposure to economics. That being said, Chris does a nice job of explaining concepts in class, especially since the section I was in was an 8 week course. If you have questions, visit during office hours or after class and make sure you read the book and attend class.
Great professor- I stayed after class a lot to talk to him because he knows something about everything, not just econ. I knew nothing about this topic going in and got Cs on both tests, but a B in the class. He takes time to answer questions, admits when he is wrong, and listens to exactly what you need help with if you ask. Highly Recommend
The textbook we used was essential to the class but I hated it. The only way I learned the material was through his lectures and his study guidesself tests that he provided for each chapter. However, even reading and studying his material didn't prepare me for his exams. I felt like I was taking an exam for a completely different class.
He was kind of unclear because he used many metaphors he was a decent teacher. He was also kind of loud but he was nice.
I'm not very good at Economics so I wasn't really sure what was going on ever, but I feel like Mr. Austin definitely could've been more clear about the material and expectations. I usually get A's and I struggled to understand everything. If you want to pass this class, find the reading guides he has on D2L.
If you're taking his course online, good luck. The entire class is on the book and the book is confusing. His instructions never seemed to be very clear and his teaching solely from the book made the class feel like a drag. I did not feel like the course prepared me for the exams at all. I don't recommend this class.
Crystal clear in expectations and scheduling. Provides a variety of resources for your success... I actually recommended his online-accessable to a peer taking ECON from a different professor. There is no question that he really cares about what he does and he is very professional. Also, he is very hilarious and likes to see his students do well.
You must read the book and attend classes in order to pass this class. Lectures are used for examples, not learning the material and there is a daily assignment collected for participation points. Mr. Austin makes it difficult to fail by offering an optional final to make up missed test points. I will be taking Macro with Austin in the summer.
I would give him 5/5 although he is stuck in the stone age when it comes to taking notes.. I couldn't use Evernote.. Outside of that, I highly recommend him! He describes things in a way that anybody can remember and is good at communicating his expectations and assignments for future classes.
Chris Austin is a great guy, he really seems to enjoy the classes he teaches. He knows the subject really well and makes Economics interesting. He made sure classmates new eachother, it was the most animated class Ive ever taken. Only 4 exams and quizzes every week. Make sure to study and show up. If you focus and work hard you'll pass.
Well, Chris Austin is a great person. He really seems as though he cares a lot about what hes teaching. He makes sure that the students connect to what hes teaching which helps with understanding the material a lot. However, the tests are only 20 points each and they are incredibly difficult. If you don't study and dont read the book, you wont pass
Every Tuesday we had a 6 point quiz on the chapter he assigned. Wasn't super hard, but just study the chapter and you'll do fine. His lectures were amazing, pay attention so you understand or else you'll be lost and confused. This man wastes a lot of paper for in-class assignments (not graded). Doesn't believe in using technology for class
Mr. Austin knows Economics. He is approachable during office hours, however, he doesn't get through all the material during lecture. In addition, the textbook he uses is terribly written, and I learned more through watching Youtube videos. The exams are tough and are worth a significant portion of your grade. I would take Econ with someone else.
There is assigned reading every day, and if you don't do it, you won't pass. The material was extremely difficult to understand. He lectured and gave examples on the board but all of which were impossible to comprehend. Would not take again
This is the WORST class I have ever had. I am an A student but struggled a lot in this class so was my classmates. He assumes that you should know basic economic and he is not thorough in his explanations at all. He thinks he is funny but got the worst jokes that will make you sleep. PLEASE DO NOT take this class if you love your GPA.
One word for this class HORRIBLE! Please no not take this class if you want to PASS. He is very so old school. He doesn't allow you to use the bathroom during quizzes nor a 3 hour exam. The text book was kind of fair understanding but he will throw you off during lectures. The class is also not interactive and you likely be struggling on your own
Keeps me interested during the lecture. He also teaches economics in a clear way so it's easier to understand.
Hard tests, then again I didn't try very hard. He hates cell phones with a passion, if he sees you on your phone during class he gets angry.
