nice prof~

Yeah sure he's easy, but I'm afraid that I won't know anything for my next classes because he teaches at the slowest pace ever.
Very sweet, helpful and funny. But you'll have to study the text on your own if you ever want to get anywhere... Otherwise a pretty good prof.
he covers so little material that im petrified for my next biol course... also not helpful that he hasnt touched zoology since 1974 was it? but a VERY nice and generous guy and tests are ridiculously simple
I have never heard someone speak so slowly in my life. His lectures are a waste of time (to put it nicely). this guy has no idea what he is talking about w/ respect to biology so read the text book or better yet, the study guide, and you will do fine.
Nice prof, slow lectures, easy midterms, not-so-straight-forward final.
Great prof, nice guy, slow talker.
A very nice guy but definitely not a good teacher. VERY slow lecture + a the textbook explains things a lot clearer.
Awesome prof!! He is a slow talker...but what the heck..at least I'm able to absorb these material in early morning 8am classes.
He talks very very slowly which makes it extremely difficult to stay awake (especially during an 8 am class). Seems like a nice guy but i wouldn't want to sit through his lectures again.
This guy, although he does know what he is talking about, gives AWFUL notes. The reasoning he puts behind his notes is: "They've read the textbook, I'll just give them notes in point form to review". Unlike other profs, he DOES NOT supply enough information for the exam so please read the book!
Doesn't give good notes, but that would have been ok if he could talk a little bit faster. He's not very unclear so you wouldn't know what's important and his exams requre quite a lot of memorization (even though we were told that there would be no memory-based questions on the exam).
Monotonous lecturing and slow pace is offset by his hilarious self-deprecating sense of humour.
he is probably the worst prof. I have ever had at UBC. He is very monotanous and gives terrible notes. Avoid this professor.
Absolutely useless, worst professor I have ever had.
Kind of boring and uninteresting lecture, most of the time he read from a ppt someone else made, always with a monotonous tone of voice. the first classes he gave clear notes on mycorrhizae but it went downhill from there and once we reached the nitrogen cycle nothing made sense. he's hot in a scruffy kind of way
best prof ever.
Good class for people with no background in science, a bit tedious if you do! Easy class to get a good mark if you do the work, content is interesting but the pace of the lectures is pretty slow at times
He is such a nice guy; requests to have exams moved due to conflicts - no problem. He does have a monotonous voice, and the pace of lectures was often too slow, but the class was not difficult. If you have a science background, the first half of the course is review... If you attend class, he'll tell you which of his slides are important for exams!
I wish I could rate him a 0. Avoid at all costs, the worst prof I've ever had. Powerpoint material is disorganized and extremely confusing (plus no textbook), very slow and monotonous lectures, no office hours, not helpful at all, 35% midterm and 65% final. An absolute nightmare of a class.
Couldn't keep to his own schedule for the class and so barely covered half the material. He didn't offer office hours or answer questions clearly. I walked away from the course feeling more confused about Forestry than when I walked into it.
Although Dr. Chanway may have a monotone voice and slow paced lectures, his class was very fair and cared more about learning than tricking you on an exam or swamping you with assignments. Extremely easy exams, one midterm and one exam. A great science course for a grade booster in an extremely low-stress environment.
The nicest professor I've ever had! Wish I could take more courses with him.
One of the EASIEST classes at ubc. Hidden GPA booster no one knows about. I showed up to a total of 3 classes in the term and got close to 100%. Impossible to get 100 though, but do-able with a grade close to 100. The downside of this class is he's very monotone, so if you show up, you will fall asleep.
Great professor that is very accessible out of class. The course is easy and the professor prepares students well for exams.
Great prof, great course. Would highly recommend for students who want to learn more about forestry and have a good time.
Awesome course where everything is clearly communicated to students regarding what they should be taking out of each lecture and what is to be examined. Lecture slides are specific and the prof is very responsive through email. He is always willing to help!
Yeah, this class is easy. Only graded by a midterm and a final (very easy if you do the work). But I've learned more about forestry and the way that plants work in this class than in any other class! It's such a low stress environment that the material really sticks with your brain. It's great to take if you need a GPA AND mood boost. Coolest prof.
One of the best profs I've had at UBC. He truly cares about his students and genuinely wants everyone to do well. FRST 303 was not a super hard course and if you put the time in, you will be rewarded. Only graded on a midterm and the final!
As an Arts student, I was so intimidated by the science requirement! This class almost made me want to switch to Forestry!! You can tell that Chris cares a lot about his students and our success!
One of the nicest and caring profs I've had! I took this for my science req and it's pure memorization, but an easy A with one midterm and final. Attendance isn't mandatory as all info is on powerpoints. Highly recommend this class as an elective or science req - I have NO background in science, but much of it reminded me of bio 11/12
Dr. Chanway is one of the most caring and hilarious profs I have ever had in my 5 years at UBC. Very accommodating professor and cares for his students. Also has funny jokes in class. Content of course is interesting if you like the outdoors and I always wondered about the trees in the backcountry of BC.
LOVED taking Professor Chanway's class last semester. I don't even have a background in Science, but I thoroughly enjoyed this class. Chris was the most understanding and accommodating professors I've ever had. If you want to take a stress-free, wholesome course, take FRST 303.
FRST303 is engaging, interesting, and a suuuuper easy class!
Chris is a gem. Super kind and understanding! Loved this class :)
super nice guy, chill teacher
Easiest A+ of my life. The professor gives out the exam questions weeks before the exam. All you have to do is do the questions in advanced and check with Chanway to see if they are correct. Once you know they are correct, on the day of the exam, just copy and paste your answers you got confirmed by Chanway! Easiest course ever! ZERO effort :)
He is so kind towards students. If you have any questions just ask him and he will give you a very clear answer. He is passionate about the course. He is very clear on what information you are required to know. The class is stress free. The exams are closed book but he will give you a selection of questions weeks prior to exams. Took as elective
One of THE best profs I've had at UBC. He is very enthusiastic about his subject, incredibly helpful, and very understanding of pushing back deadlines and whatnot. His marking scheme is more than reasonable and focuses on learning rather than stressing about grades, which NO other class I've taken has. Would 100% take anything by this professor.
Dr. Chanway is by far one of the best prof I ever had at UBC. He is so funny yet such a caring prof. It's a great course !!
Dr. Chanway was an exceptional professor and this is a great course that isn't difficult and good to take for interest and to learn about nature.
The absolute best professor and class hands down. He is so kind and always available to answer any questions you have. I found the class to be super eye opening and it taught me so much interesting information about forestry. If you need a science credit take this class!! Will be the best decision of your life.
Easiest class ever! Content can be boring BUT the professor provides the questions to the exams weeks prior to the actual exam. On the day of the exam because the exam is online and non-proctored it is an OPEN BOOK exam. Highly recommend doing the questions, so you know what to expect.
Took this class to fulfill a science requirement, he easily got me in very last minute. Very chill, not very tech savvy so be patient. Hes super nice but since the course was online this year it was super test heavy. Final worth 65% and the rest is a midterm but he gives you the questions beforehand so you know what can be on it. Really recommend!
He is so kind and a great prof! He is also super understanding and marks the exams fair. It is a great way to get your science credit.
Professor Chanway is a great professor who sets out clear expectations for the course from the get-go. As long as you make an effort in the course and keep up with the material, you're going to do well. Professor Chanway is also a very flexible and understanding professor, and the course material is interesting, would definitely recommend!!!
Class is not a walk in the park like people say! The whole course is based on 2 things, midterm, and final exam. Problem sets were very tough and gave an idea of what the exam would be based on. Be prepared to take very thorough notes on topics such as tree roots and fungi hahaha.
Chanway is probably my favourite prof at UBC. He genuinely cares so much about the course and what he's teaching which translates well to the way he teaches. I would recommend this class to everyone at UBC - not only is the prof great, but the topic matters too.
CHRIS CHANWAY IS A FORESTRY GOD. Not to mention he is the kindest soul ever and replies to emails basically instantly. Got me into the class when it was full. And what prof ever gives you exam questions before??! Memorizing is heavy but can easily get an A. You must take FRST 303 with Chris, hes truly a legend and content is actually interesting!!
I really enjoyed taking FRST 303 with Chris. It is an easy course for anyone if you go to lecture and read the class slides! And of course if you do the homework well, you will ace the exams!
Very caring and accommodating professor. He truly cares about all his students and addresses their concerns. I do think monitoring should occur during online exams to prohibit cheating and ensure academic integrity.
Professor Chanway is a very fair professor. Dont expect any curveballs from his grading. He tells you EXACTLY what you need to know. Unlike some profs who make you guess as to what might be on the test. Would definitely take again.
I would highly recommend Professor Chanway and any courses he teaches. Hes an amazing professor and has clear expectations and doesnt trick you like other profs.
Awesome professor, super enthusiastic about what he's teaching. Just be sure to follow along and don't fall behind on lectures and you'll do great. Super kind and cheerful. Would recommend this course to anyone!!
Professor Chanway knows his subject well and is very nice. You can watch the recordings and he is more than happy to answer any questions about the material, the possible question's are given in advance before the tests to help you study.
LOVED TAKING THIS COURSE. Absolutely a Gem this prof is. 11/10 forever. 2 exams and he gives you the questions before hand. Clear lecture slides. Kinda makes me wanna study trees now! Totally recommend!! I got an A+ in the class and it wasnt too much work!
Professor Chanway is awesome! you'll learn a lot about forestry and you can tell he is a professor that cares a lot about the wellbeing of his students
Easiest class at UBC! He gives you the exam questions beforehand and on exam day emails you the exam. All I did was a copy and paste job from the test bank he sent. Got an A+ in the course.
Chillest teacher ever!
THE BEST PROF IVE EVER HEARD!! Easy A and I mean it. You will get the exam questions weeks before the midterm and final exam. Must take this class :)
I took FRST 303 this semester and got 100%. Prof Chanway gives you a list of possible exam q's and tests you from them. 99% of the info you need is in the lecture slides and you can command f it. I have a science background, so the course was a bit easier for me, but he explains things for the non-science folk. He is unironically hilarious.
One of the best and most caring professors at UBC. He responded to emails promptly and held office hours upon request. His office hours were helpful and his lecture slides were easy to understand. It was great that we had question banks for the midterm and the final exam. I would 100% recommend this course.
Great Professor! He gives clear and guided information on what will be on assessments. Course workload is very doable, especially for a 300-level course and while there is only a midterm and final for the whole course he leaves you confident you can achieve a good grade. I highly recommend this course
Great prof and an easy A+
I LOVE CHANWAY. GOD BLESS CHANWAY
Dr. Chanway is one of the best profs that I have had at UBC so far. The best thing about him is that he is friendly and cheerful and no matter what time of the day, he usually answers your questions within 5 mins. His exams are also easy without referencing course material during the exams.
Professor Chanway teaches one of the least stressful classes at UBC. The grading criteria and course material are delivered so clearly because he wants you to do well. always so cheerful, caring and answers questions promptly.
Easy course if you put in the work. All the possible exam questions are given out ahead of time.
Best course and best prof ever!
One of the best and most caring profs at UBC! The exams are pretty easy thanks to the question banks he gives out, his lectures are easy to understand and he's also hilarious! If you study well, it's an easy course.
If this course is still offered online TAKE IT! A true GPA booster and honestly we students deserve a course like this. We love Chris! Exam questions given in advance so answer those and your good! dont even watch lectures since answers are in the slides! But go to lecture to support chris
God. Bless. Chanway.
Very easy class with a prof who wants the best for his students. There was a midterm and a final where he provides a list of questions that will be on the exam ~3 weeks before the exam. Has said some offensive things during lecture but apologized for it the next day, so clearly knows how to take criticism and is open to change.
Very nice and approachable prof. His lectures and slides are straight forward. Exam questions were given weeks prior to the midterm/final so there's really no excuse to do bad in this course. Very glad I took this course!
Awesome prof! Would highly recommend to anyone!
Great Prof!
Professor Chanway was an amazing prof! We knew exactly what was going to be asked of us on the midterm and final and that made it so easy to do well. He genuinely cares about our success and wants us to excel. His method of teaching/testing helped me retain info from him class far better than I have in other classes.
Chris is a legend. do not miss this course if you're looking for a guaranteed GPA booster. Only one midterm and one final and everything from the question bank provided to you already. Easy 100%
The easiest course ever!! Amazing prof
Great and kind prof! Would recommend this course to anybody.
such a nice man! hes so responsive to emails and very supportive of students' learning
This course is a must take. Professor Chanway genuinely cares about his students, he's an amazing prof all around!
A very sweet prof! He does a good job communicating with his students about updates. The course itself isn't difficult if you keep up with the lecture material. The slides are fairly clear, so even if you miss the lectures, you understand the concepts through the slides. I'm glad I took the course!
Chris Chanway or Chris Goatway. Legendary prof who deserves a pay rise. Taking both frst 303 and apbi 342 with him. Not all heroes wear capes
Top professor in UBC without a doubt a must take he grades very reasonable and is a super great guy
Grades are based on 2 exams, and he gives the exam question bank beforehand.
Chanway was one of the best profs I have had at UBC to date. He is very caring and passionate about his teaching. He is quick to answer questions, and provides clear examples, definitions and explanations to everything that you need to succeed. By far one of the best people and professors. Take a course with him if you get the chance.
prolly the best class ive ever taken at UBC
Super carrying Prof that has a genuine interest in his students. Will definitely recommend
Really easy interesting course.
I love this course! It was soo fun and interesting!
God tier prof. Really wants us to learn and understand
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. 20000% take this course again.
BEST COURSE I'VE TAKEN AT UBC. HANDS DOWN BEST PROFESSOR EVER!
Amazing class and Great prof
Prof good
Amazing prof
Professor Chanway is absolutely amazing! His lectures are so entertaining and you can really tell he loves what he teaches. The course content is actually so interesting and you learn so much!! I really really enjoyed taking FRST 303 this semester and would highly recommend it!
An icon - focuses more on your learning than creating tests to trick you. Accommodating and one of the rare profs who cares more about what you do know from the course than testing what you don't know.
good course yeee
I would be really appreciated
Great structure, offers test bank to help you prepare for midterm and final. Passionate prof
perfect
Really awesome professor
he's wonderful - no more words needed!
Chris Chanway is the Lorax - he speaks for the trees and he's so wholesome and cute! Such a great prof and really cares about each, individual student. I wish he was my grandpa :')
Chanway makes the topics on forestry engaging, and the course load is light on difficulty and time. Overall, a great professor!
There are no tricks on his tests. FRST 303 is amazing
AN ANGEL OF A PROF
Dr. Chanway is incredible - he delivers the content in a way that is motivating and really allows you to succeed if you do the work. He cares so much about us and wants to see us do well. He is a more than generous prof and we need more like him at UBC!!!!
Dr. Chris Chanway is a great professor who is very passionate and caring. He genuinely wants each student to succeed. This was a great and fun class to take. The class content was very interesting and easy to learn as he provided clear examples. Keep this course!
Gem of a prof, super nice, doesn't believe in evolution but believes in god. Gives all possible exam questions beforehand, easy to study for his exams. Online class, only graded on a midterm and final (also online). Be wary, the forestry department is trying to lower his average, this year they made him add MC questions, brought average down by 3%
Professor Chris Chanway may just be the single greatest professor to ever grace the University Endowment Lands. In my many years as a student at UBC, I have never had an instructor who taught course materials as effectively and enjoyable while also being a remarkably humorous and relatable teacher who cares about his students. Bro is the goat
One of the best professors with the best lectures and exams. So kind.
10/10 bozo this happened to my buddy eric once
One of the best courses here at UBC
Average was 93%- all that needs to be said
Best instructor at UBC
Must take elective! Professor Chanway is super chill. Listening to his lectures is like listening to a friend talk about something with enthusiasm and it pumps you up. He is knowledgeable and gives a clear grading criterion. There are no "traps" with his test questions, the course is fully graded on tests with no assignments.
I LOVE CHIRS CHANWAY FAV PROF EVER
Chanway is a legend. By far one of my favorite profs. He is very patient and will always answer your questions (even those repeated multiple times). Chanway is a blessing on Earth. It was very clear what he expected you to know/learn from his lectures. I wish more of my professors were like him. He even acknowledged the existence of Rate My Prof.
This got to be the most chill professor I've ever had.
Though we had 1400+ students in our lecture he was very attentive to his emails and gave replies back almost immediately. Best prof at UBC hands down! Take your class with him A+ guaranteed!
Dr. Chaneway is very attentive ptof, he quickly responds to email and questions. Explain everything with so much detail so people from different backgrounds understand.
The professor was great at teaching. He was very informative and really wanted his students to learn. He has great passion about plants and forestry in general and it was pleasure to learn with him.
Teaching style is very lax, gives all the required information for a student to succeed. Very chill course overall, would recommend for everyone.
Professor Chanway is just an amazing lecturer. He was very informative and helpful throughout the term. Don't miss a chance to take a class with him. You will definitely learn while enjoying the lectures.
Professor Chanway is one of the best profs I've ever had at UBC. You HAVE to take this class with him sometime in your undergrad. If you don't understand something, he will explain it as many times as needed. No textbook, only one midterm and one final, and he gives you a question bank from which he will test you for both exams!
Chris Chanway is easily one of the greatest profs to ever teach at UBC. Not only is he a great professor who teaches content very well, but an incredible person. He saved my elderly mother from a burning car fire and sent our entire class on a vacation to Mexico after we had an A+ class average using funds from the faculty of Forestry at UBC. GOAT
Best class ever!!! The way that he structured the class makes it so it's impossible to fail. The class average was very high. But it is very lecture-heavy. We were graded by 2 midterms and 1 final.
PROF Chanway is a king! You don't need to attend lectures if you're busy. All you need to do for FRST 303 is to seat down the day before the exam, and download all the slides at once. Exams questions are given in advance. Use command F and find all the answers in the slide. Then just memorize it! WHat a legend! Definitely recommend BEST COURSE UBC!
FRST 303 might be the best elective at UBC lmao. The content was dry for sure but it's an amazing GPA booster.
I recommend taking this class with Chris :)) really good professor
Prof Chanway is passionate about forestry and botany, cares about his students, has a teaching style that is flexible and allows you to actually enjoy learning the material! He provides clear expectations for exams and plenty of time to prepare. Lectures are also recorded, which is really helpful if you're not able to make it. Highly recommend!
Amazing professor. Easiest class I've taken so far at UBC (and also highest mark on my transcript). Lectures are not condensed, and makes it very enjoyable. Releases question bank and so the midterm and final are basically collaborative (do questions before the exam, and then just copy it over). Great experience.
THE GOAT THE MESSIAH THE ONE AND ONLY CHRISTOPHER CHANWAY Midterm 1 + Midterm 2 + Final Exam = 100% of grade Questions of the mt and final given out weeks before the tests take place. Just memorize some stuff and you are chilling I LOVE U CHANWAY
Easiest class ever. Even a high school grade 8 student should be able to get at least 95% in this class. He provides you with the questions beforehand, and all you have to do is look up the answer from his lecture slides and prepare them before the exam day. On exam day, all you have to do is copy and paste the answers you prepared and u are good.
got me into my major AND got my first 100 at UBC with him :D
Everyone rated 5/5 because of how easy this course is, but I find Chris very disorganized & condescending. Aside from the lecture that was canceled due to Makeup Mon, 2 additional classes were canceled without any makeup recordings even though he promised to upload them during the weekend. Midterm is next week, yet we're still 3 lectures behind!
Very disorganized prof. He often cancels class at the last minute without explanation. Not exactly an engaging prof either, thank goodness this class is easy to self study otherwise would be a pain.
Great class with a great prof and an actually interesting course content!
Considering how he answered "is the midterm open book" and "is there an answer key to the question sheet" at least 20 times per class and somehow stayed sane, this guy deserves a raise.
FRST 303 is not the same calibre it used to be. Questions are no longer from only the question bank, and marking seems to be harsher. Average for this class for 2023W is 84-89 and not the ~94 it used to be. Classes are the same - on zoom with posted lecture videos and powerpoints + pdfs of the lecture.
This course is a copy paste simulator but that may change in the future.
Took this 2023W Term 1. Didn't watch any lectures. Answered questions on the question bank given before exams and did well. Said exams were going to be in-person but changed to online two weeks before exams. Not sure if it's still online now but if it is, I highly recommend for an easy A+.
One of the best professors I've had in my university degree - really caring about the students and the lectures were straightforward and directly applicable with exam knowledge needed. Fun times - we had a snowstorm one of the days during our lecture, and we were able to take a pause before resuming our lecture
The lectures are straightforward and applicable to exams. Attendance is mandatory, but the class is relatively easy to self-study. Unstuckstudy was a helpful study tool alongside the provided question bank.
