He is a good guy. Teaches pretty well. He's very helpful, and willing to help. But his tests are an abomination to mankind. Class averages for the two midterms were 43 and a 64, the second one was with the curve, first one was weird.
This guy is out of his mind. His tests were extremely hard...even the TA's said they were to hard. He is very bad at explaining things and always takes the long way to answer a problem just so he can confuse all the students. Do NOT take him if you can help it.
He was better than the prof for 201...
Hardest class ever.
This guy makes the class out to be easy, but his tests are horrible. Very boring too, bring a gameboy or magazine. Distracts by playing with his hair and moving jaw a lot. Nice guy but needs more experience teaching and writing tests. Never finished my tests, too long. MC Questions Fair though.
Great teacher just can't write a test
lectures are great, but tests are ridiculously hard (even TA's have difficulty with them)
Well I must be crazy because I loved this guy. I thought he was an awesome professor who really cared about us. He needs more practice writing tests, but I felt that they were definitely do-able. Physics is difficult work and the class didn't take the responsibility to study appropriately. I wish this guy was teaching 203 right now.
Class average D's on tests were D's and F's. He was a bad professor who expected more than he actually put in himself. Don't take any classes from him.
During lecture...not bad, but his tests were absolutely horrible, probably the most poorly written tests I've ever encountered...don't take physics from this guy.
Really, really hard classes. I've had to retake both. Coffin never explained anything clearly, and what he did explain was never on the exam.
very hard class. yeah, i thought this was ph 201 not 401.... practice problems in book are not even similar to those on test. teacher does not explain very well. also, there are so many people in the class that you can't really get one-on-one help
This class was soooo hard. The questions on the tests are nothing like practice problems, and he uses a lot of trick questions in lecture and on the tests.
Coffin is horrible when it comes to preparing his students for his exams. The lectures are not bad at all but the exams are extremely hard. His multiple choice sucks and his write out problems often entail more work than you are ever expected to do in class or on homework. If you can, hold out for a better instructor.

He does not prepare students for the difficulty of his exams. Worst class I have ever taken at OSU. Would definately not recommend him to anyone. Even the TA's said some of the problems on the test were not fair. Just try to avoid this guy.
I am usually a straight A student, but Coffin's exams are extremely hard (no exaggeration). The class average on both midterms was an F, and those who scored higher only got a B or C at best. Only plus side: if the whole class does badly on exams, he does give extra points, but that hardly makes up for it. AVOID THIS ONE AT ALL COSTS!!
He doesn't lecture, just does example problems and the test questions come out of nowhere and are way harder than anything in the book or class. Don't take him if you can help it.
a miserable person everything in the other reviews is true, except for the positive ones. I went into the class hating physics, I left hating Coffin
I usually get As and in honors college, but this class is extremely frustrating and the lectures, work, labs and recitation do not prepare you for the most horrendous exams. You may do well if its your ONLY class, but even then the time and effort put into the class do not properly parallel the grade received. Get used to failing the exams.
I've attended grad level science courses in a foreign language and found them far easier than this course!! The exam questions are pulled from the profs ass and are far harder than what he claims they are. The format was terrible, he just did super easy example problems and didn't prepare us for his tests ever.
WOW!!! I've taken classes from immigrants who had no idea how to speak english and they were better teacher than her? My High School teacher in physics was gigantuously better. He might be a good research prof but horrible at communication the information to students. Very bad teaching style and has quizzes everyday!
Well, it just continued into this term. As usual he has jammed everything into the last few lectures and of course the TA's tell me these are the most difficult subjects to grasp. Chris is a nice guy but if you are looking for clarity avoid his class like it's the plague!
One of the best professors I have had. Explains things clearly and very willing to help. Has a lot of office hours and is very happy to explain things, and holds long review sessions before tests. And the oh so terrible "daily quizzes" mentioned in another rating, you get full credit just for participating.
I have to agree with the other reviews. His lectures do not at all prepare you for his exams. Also, I feel that the book organization is pretty poor and that doens't help either. He is a nice guy in person but I would not recommend him to other students.
If you pay attention during lecture and read the textbook, you'll do fine on exams. He's very fair when it comes to how exam scores are figured into your final grade.
Teacher himself is nice and a friendly guy to talk to. He's also very helpful. HOWEVER, the material is not and the way the class is organized is messy and unclear. The material itself also is very hard--just take a look at the homework material and exams presented. The fate of a good physics program/teacher/department at OSu remains uncertain.
Uh.... I thought I was taking GEN Physics, not Confusing Physics level 500+. This guy is really a terrible physics teacher. I think this guy has seriously messed up a lot of students. The pre-labs and labs are extremely horribly written as well as the exams and homework. AVOID at all costs, but then again--I don't think there's another PH201 teach.
Worst Physics teacher ever. His test writing skills are nonexistent. He can't teach whatsoever. He always does distracting movements during lectures like constantly moving his hair and jaw. He is a good guy in his office hours, but he can't teach at all. Avoid at all costs. I recommend taking the Gen Physics at a community college.
Probably the worst professor I have ever had. His lectures have nothing to do with the homework, and prepare you in no way to be able to solve any kind of physics problems. He expects that you've retained every single math concept you've ever encountered in your life. Very unhelpful, very unclear, very bad professor. Avoid him like the plague.

Great guy. Yes, there's a lot to learn. Yes, you have to study for his tests. He cares a lot about how the class is doing. He gives opportunities for easy points: PRS questions and extra credit HW points. He'll go over something as many times as you need. It's A LOT of work. The HW is really hard too. He'll help you a lot if you ask though.
It's a very time consuming class, but it's not impossible to do well in the course. He's enthusiastic about teaching, which makes it easier to learn the material.
Here's the deal about this class. The people who rate this class good have either taken the class before or they are geniuses. The lectures are useless, labs useless, homework is to difficult or the teacher screws up the numbers. Chris doesn't have a phd or a master in physics. The TAs are extremely better. Take this class at LLBC
My take is that this is not really a good class. The teacher has an extremely poor and limited teaching style which does not contribute to the necessary material. Physics is hard, YES, however it is the teacher and the department that counts. As people said, HW is pointless as you just learn to scribe, and not the mechanics. Take at somewhere else.
Chris is a nice teacher and seems like a nice person, however his class is nothing like him. He doesn't know how to teach, and he doesn't prepare you for either the Tests, or the Homework. The nail in the coffin for me, was after the first midterm, the avg was 62% and he said that exceeded his expectations, does he expect us to fail? Don't take it.
Like people mentioned, Chris is a good person just not good for a tough physics class. The average on our last midterm was 51% which I think says something about how the class is taught. I felt very unprepared for the homework and the tests. I would highly recomend taking this class from someone else if you can.
People aren't being fair to Coffin. He's hard, but not unreasonable and tells you upfront what to expect. you can get a good grade if you do the work. The HW is hard but it does a very good job of preparing you for the tests and he has lots of office hours to help. You end up actually learning physics of all things! This isn't highschool anymore.
Chris is the best professor i have ever had. Very willing to help. Whatever the average is in the class whether 75% or 42% you will ge a C with "average scores". I got a B,B+ & B on my exams and VERY easily got an A inthe class. Nobody said it would be as easy as sociology or whatever it is a 5 credit class spend a little time doing HW and ur fine
This class isn't hard for a university-level science class if you actually apply yourself. He can teach you the basics but not how to reason through every single problem you might encounter. It's up to you to put the time in.. he's not going to hand you the A for memorization. The way college courses should be.
Coming from two university schools that taught in the same course and field, I can tell you that Chris teaches WAY too fast and too much for a general Physics 201 class. The positive reviews mentioned are most likely in huge bias and probably affiliated with Chris himself. The class is just bad because Chris cannot teach at all. Try another teach.
Chris, is one of the greatest professors I've encountered at the university.. He definatley knows his physics and through-out the course proves it... This is not an easy course- nor is the information presented slowly.. moreover, it isn't impossible to recieve the desired grade_with some work and a little office hr help it's do-able...hard; great!
I never had physics in high school (so this was my first taste) and I did all my homework, went to class, and received an A (it wasn't easy, but very doable). He makes it pretty straight foward, and IF he does screw up, he gives very generous adjustments. Just put in the time, and it'll be ok. DONT GET BEHIND AND READ THE BOOK, then you're set.
One of the worst Physics professors I've ever encountered. This guy can't teach, period. He goes way too fast and cannot distinguish between doable material and insanely hard material. His tests and homework have some of the most bizzare "non-standard" one has ever seen. Highly unrecommended and avoid if possible. Consider taking Physics elsewhere.
Worst teacher ever...go to LBCC
I took him for 201-203. The grade can be earned if you put in the requested '15-20 hours per week outside of class.' However, the material covered is extremely difficult and too fast-paced for a General Physics course. If you are willing to feel like an idiot after you take his tests, and see your gpa fall, he is the teacher for you.
Very difficult class in that he has very simple lectures and and impossible tests. He's a nice guy, but expects us to commit way too much time for a 200-level class (he says 15-20 hours/week). I simply didn't have enough time to do well in his class. He has high school level lectures and graduate-level tests.
Chris is a great physics teacher, its just a hard subject and fast-paced...put the time into the class - and recieve your desired grade... all you noobs need to stop crying..not blame the prof... and go study!
Takes his class way too seriously and puts in far too much detail for a General Physics course. Nice guy, and there to help, but homework is overboard and tests are gut-wrenching. Wish the courses were offered through someone else.
Coffin is a great person. His class, nor studying from the book can help you conquer his tests. Tests are much harder than questions presented in homework or lecture. Makes for lots of frustration.
This class is extremely hard whether or not you read the whole book and do all the homework assignments. I got an A the first term and put in lots of effort the last two terms but only received a B. Be prepared for frustrating exam questions that make you ask, what in the hell is this?! Even after studying your heart out the whole term! Good luck!
His tests were incredibly hard compared to the difficulty of problems that were covered in lecture. It is necessary to go to recitation, lab and office hours to even have a chance of obtaining a passing grade on the tests. Even then, the averages were less than 50%.
Be prepared to study 40 hours a week for this class! It was like a full time job! Chris is happy to offer help in office hours, but there is a line outside the door to his office because there are so many confused kids
This course was terrible. Way too in depth for a general level physics class. Coffin must think that his students have time to do physics all day. Horrible tests. GPA ruiner. Go to LBCC.
I think Chris is a great guy; I think the problem is that Oregon has a horrible educational budget and has therefore shortened its semesters down to terms and trying to cram a bunch of information into 10 weeks is difficult for anyone--let alone one professor. I think Coffin is much better than Bannon by actually having a personality
This class should be the only course on your schedule as well as your full time job. He tests at a level that is much higher than a introduction to Physics class ever should be, and criticizes the students when the average on every test is 44%, never thinking that the problem may be himself instead of the thousands of students he has "taught"
I think every commment on here is very true, especially the one about having a line outside his door and how his class is a full time job. Its not easy. IF you want a guy with personality and dont' care about your grade, then you should take him. BUT if you do care about your grade, you should take the summer course. Its an easier physics class
Nice!
Coffin really cares about his students but his physics class is extremely difficult. I killed the physics portion of the MCATs thanks to his class. Just be ready to put in the hours. Do dons of practice problems or you are screwed. It helps to actually do the homework instead of copying a friend.
Whatever you do, try your hardest to take this from another teacher or at another school (OSU isn't known for their physics dept.). This class will ruin your life for the term. The teacher is nice in person but useless. He doesn't even have a Ph.D. . . get ready for a below 50% average on every test
Took this class a couple years ago, but this guy is still one of my favorite professors ever. Very easy class and he takes a lot of extra time to hold review sessions and help people. Tests were a little long, but never anything surprising.
Great Guy, Extremely helpful in OH, Hard Tests but curves well.. I strongly suggest you go to him with questions and homework help!
Obviously, the people label Chris below as a "good teacher" are friends of his, even associates. The deal with Chris is that his tests need to be really improved. The book does an excellent job of homework and conceptual thinking, but he writes his own tests that are very difficult. His OH are NOT helpful because there are at least 50 people there!
Alas, student concerns will not be validated until they start voting 'with their feet',...taking Physics classes elsewhere. Clearly, students naturally inclined to grasp the concepts have their needs met by the course; Coffin KNOWS Physics, and is a nice person, but unfortunately he isn't an effective educator for average students.
Heres the deal, as a pre med student I take hard classes but this class is difficult cause of coffin. I am the type of student who works hard but still fails miserably on the tests....all hundred of them. the class is built on negative feedback, study study study only to fail the tests but still manage a C??? I dont understand...just avoid
I love how he makes you feel warm and fuzzy then hands you a rediculous test to fail. the only reason I am still in this class is to watch him do his signiture hair flip. oh by the way dont take this class
He's a nice guy but i'm not a big fan of him as a teacher. It just didn't seem like all the effort I put forth paid off. The test questions were a little ridiculous.
Nice guy. Terrible instructor. Even the grading rubric is ridiculous.
very hard class but good curve. Just stick it out when times get tough
Chris is a great instructor. His lectures are clear and straight forward; however, sometimes a little too straight forward - the tests are way harder than anything covered in lecture. But, he does curve well. This is the kind of teacher who cares about students, so if you have questions or concerns, Chris will go out of his way to answer them.
I wasn't going to add to this but the previous horrendously untrue posts force me to consider the welfare of students without a STRONG Physics background. I beseech you, DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. Your sanity and GPA depend on it. Chris is either a POOR instructor or ill-trained, personality aside. He tests on ADVANCED physics in an INTRO class!!!
Good teacher, but VERY hard!
Ok, y'all. Oregon State is a SCIENCE and ENGINEERING school. This is its weed out class. Yes it is very hard, but you should feel blessed to have an instructor who explains concepts as well as Chris and is willing to help. The rubrics work as long as you use the algebra like he tells you to. Rise to the challenge people.
Coffin is an amazing person. His tests are insanely hard, but he curves. You def. learn the material in this class, and that is what we are paying for. It may be harder than a beginning class normally is, but it is meant to weed out people. If you need a high GPA to get into professional school, wait till your senior year to take this class!!
The way the course is taught makes you really have to see the concepts and learn when to use and manipulate the equations to fit the situation. The series does a good job of weeding out as it was intended. But Chris is a great guy who will make sure you understand the material as long as you DO the work and seek the help AS SOON as you get stuck.
Chris looks like someone you would associate as smart, clever, but a rather arrogant Jim-Carreyish type of personality. I don't know why his teaching is so hard. This class is designed way harder than it has to be. Whether it be his fault or the crappy departments' fault is who knows. He can't really teach either. He just gives insane tests.
I am simply horrified by the fact that I paid money to have this man "teach" me. The class was horrible, although Chris is a nice person. I am no longer taking the class at OSU, but at LBCC and highly recommend it. I am learning MUCH more and enjoy the class very much now! DO NOT TAKE IT AT OSU
Chris is a very challenging teacher, and his course is the most challenging in my major. However, challenging is what I paid for, since physics is a great part of MCAT. Expect to spend 8 hours+ a week outside of class, but HELP is ALWAYS available when you need it. You just have to find a TA sometime other than THE DAY OF the EXAM:) Plan ahead
I have taken the entire series, hang in there after the first term it gets easier. Chris is a really nice guy and always willing to help students with questions or homework. The tests are murder but if you stay above the average and do the homework you will get a good grade. He offers lots of extra points...take advantage of ALL of them!!
Chris seems like really nice guy. His lectures were a little hard to follow. He is very excited about his subject. He often gets sidetracked making doodles on the blackboard. Class in general was very easy, as it was only concepts and no math. The tests were jokes. Like 20 EASY questions. Also note: zero homework all term :)
Horrible Teacher! I do not recommend this teacher at all. His tests and homework do not coincide with in class problems at all. BAD
OSU physics does not prepare for MCAT physics...if you take Coffin you will BOMB the physics section(received 3-7 score of 15) I personally know of 9 people (smugly had an 'A' in Coffins' class)who took and bombed. MCAT tests Newtonian and Copernican concepts equally used 4 BASIC equations. Coffins' 201-203 series is useless to pre-med students.
THIS CLASS IS HARD! There are no 2 ways about it. If you must take it, try and take it with a bunch of easy classes. LOTS of very difficult homework and exams are EXTREMELY difficult. Prepare to spend MANY hours (20-30) just doing homework & lab. Chris is an extremely difficult instructor but willing to help and answer questions. Good Luck!!
The amount of work this class requires is ridiculous (Im not a slacker student) The depth of knowledge and understanding of physics required to complete the hw and the exams seems extreme for a 200 class. I took ph at another college and got a 4.0 but here I am struggling with a C+, I do the hw but still get D's on exams. This class hurts my gpa!
Chris is a nice guy, but he is without a doubt the WORST teacher I have ever had. The homework he assigns has nothing to do with what he covers in class or what he puts on exams (not to mention, it takes approximately 1 hour per problem and he only grades 1-2 problems per assignment). He has to massively curve every test or everyone in the class wo
Chris is very nice and very helpful when you ask for his help, but his class is ridiculously hard. I consider myself a very good student but could not for the life of me pick up on this subject. The homework is long and takes an hour per problem, the labs have little to nothing to do with the lectures and, the tests are extremely difficult.
The class is ridiculously hard. I have no interest in physics at all but I can not understand anything about it. I got confused about physics all the way back in PH 201 after the first midterm. The HW are long and take hours to complete even if it is only a couple of problems long and only a few are graded.
Coffin expects his students to focus on one thing in their lives and one thing only; PHYSICS. His lectures are relatively easy to follow but once he throws the HW at you, you are befuddled beyond belief. He expects you to take these small equations and use your "understanding" of them to solve immensely complex problems that require tons of hours
Coffin was a great professor. His course was VERY difficult but he outlines his expectations very clearly and is available for help every day. Go to office hours for the HW and read the book. I can not say enough about the helpfulness of Coffin.
Not as hard as people make him seem, just requires a lot of time and energy to do the HW and study for the 4 midterms. But, fundamentals of physics is such a huge, essential subject that it demands that! Most people motivated to write reviews are motivated by anger/frustration, so that explains the abundance of negative reviews for Chris and others
Chris is really nice but his tests are insane! He expects you to get all of your understanding outside of class and doesn't cover anything but basics in class. If you take this class expect to spend 90% of your life studying and actually reading the book if you would like to do well. I would recommend taking it during summer if you can.
Great teacher. He knows his stuff and spends a lot of his personal time helping students succeed.
Chris is a good man. His class is tough, but that's the nature of the material. I wish he'd put out a whole bunch of WORKED EXAMPLES to help us along, but other than that, I think he's very fair in his grading and very dedicated to his class. Just needs more info!!
Coffin understands physics but cannot convey it. He assumes you have nothing else to do but study physics. I sacrificed all my time for a C. I was so stressed out all term that I nearly had a nervous breakdown. If there is one piece of advice I could give, its don't take this class. Don't believe the people who say its easy if you value your sanity
Never does example problems in class, believes showing powerpoints with the same formulas that are in the book are adequate for teaching, you will learn everything yourself
This class was super easy! The professor was interesting, even though the subject was a bore. If you fail both tests you can still get a B+, because lab (which is always less than an hour) and an extra-credit assignment. Overall, definitely easiest science classes at OSU.
Chris teaches a tough subject and he knows it. When you take this class, budget a LOT of time to go to his office hours. They are UNBELIEVABLY helpful, and he just doesn't have enough time to convey everything clearly in the normal lectures. Overall, Chris is a great guy and a fantastic professor.
Chris Coffin teaches a tough subject and knows it. If you want to do well in the class, budget a LOT of extra time to attend his office hours. They are extremely helpful and he simply doesnt havve time to go over everything in sufficient detail during lectures. Overall, Chris is a great guy and a great professor.
Take physics at LBCC if u can. he goes way fast, so if you've never had physics before, good luck!!
Coffin has a tough class, but its very rewarding. His tests and homework can be hard, but by budgeting time and ATTENDING OFFICE HOURS you'll do fine--he loves talking to students and helping them out. He has a passion for the subject and it shows when you talk to him. Take the time to do well and enjoy it. He's the best teacher I've had at OSU.
He is a good guy but his class is not well explained. I will recommend everyone to take physics over the summer. It is already a tough class and more the way this class is tought. I respect professor Coffin but I think he should slow down and explain things more basic.
HW will take up a good chunk of your time, but will go much faster if you ATTEND OFFICE HOURS. Chris goes through problems with students, and that really helps you understand how to go about test problems. Probably the best/nicest teacher I've had at OSU. This class is about thinking and problem solving; don't whine or expect it to be an easy A!!!
This was an extremely demanding, time-consuming course, but that's what college is. Chris is by far the most helpful instructor I've had at OSU. As abysmal as the test scores may seem, Chris always adds on points and (it even states in the syllabus) at least half the class receives a B- or above, which is a very good curve. Don't procrastinate.
Not sure what everybody is talking about... I was a pre-business student and I took this as an elective. I went to class and listened but didn't study much. I set the curve on all exams and got over 110% in the class. Sure, Chris got distracted frequently but he explained things really well, especially in office hours. I studied more for BA101.
This class was one of the the hardest classes I've taken at OSU. Chris is a great guy, but not the best teacher. The averages on all my midterms were below a 50%. The homework is impossible to do and I had to hire a tutor because he teaches so fast
If you have to take PH for a bc class then avoid Coffin PH 2xx class at all cost. Try his 1xx classes then, I heard those 1xx class are pretty ok. Talking about PH201, his homework, lab works and exams are insane. Be ready to spend ALL of your time with Coffin requirements.
Over all I think he knows physics really well... However knowing a subject and teaching it are two different things and he is not a very good teacher. The TAs are more helpful and are able to explain things a lot more clearly then he can... His test are ridiculous and so is his hw... This is the first class that I have turned in not completed hw
The HW assignments take about 20-30 hours a week and even then you still hardly get any points for them. There are four exams and a finals, all are 10 questions, which is about half of a hw assignment. Since the hw takes about 20-30 hours and the test is half as many questions but you only have 80mins to complete it. Class averages are about 45%.
Awful. Help outside of class is always vague/useless. He is nice but a terrible teacher. Teaches one thing, tests on COMPLETELY different things. All 3 terms he drowns you in so much overly complicated math that you don't even get a chance to work on the physics aspect. This is that class that will forever have a bitter taste in my mouth. Pointless
There was a lot of hw in this course but if you do it and understand it you will do well. He was very helpful in office hrs & made you think about what you were asking instead of just answering the question. Tests were challenging because concepts from the hw were used but not always similar questions as hw. Spent 15hrs a wk outside of class on hw.
Because the class is so large and there are no other teachers for this course series, getting help in this class is a nightmare. If you do the homework and teach this course to yourself you will be okay, but you do have to teach yourself since lectures are about theoretical physics and examples done in class offer no real solution
Awesome instructor ever!! I like him a lot, he has incredible ability to clarify stuff in his office hour. Miss him already after finishing PH series
Office hours Office hours Office hours.. you will get an A if you live in his office.
Doesn't lecture much or go into enough depth. The book we are using is way easier than any of his homework or exams. The exams are so difficult, that the instructor couldn't finish them in the time given. There isn't a way to prepare for his exams. Worst teacher I have ever taken. Couldn't teach a dog to sit. Avoid at all costs.
Great teacher. Not an easy class. You've really got to go to office hours and be proactive about your own learning. Just going to class isn't going to help you at all. Lecture is more of a venue for introduction and clarification. You have to do much of the learning on your own. Can't just sit in lecture and expect to pass.
Grades extremely leniently, tough problems but if you pay attention in class and get all the non test related points you will pass easily. Highly recommended, he cares about his students and is easy to communicate with and responds promptly.
I have a passion for physics but this is the least interesting class I have taken. Lecture is a useless snooze fest where he repeats himself explaining 1 simple concept for the entire hour. He would be more clear and interesting if he was more concise rather than repeating himself constantly. The homework assignments are also unnecessarily wordy.
Very helpful! Secret is his office hours, spend time in there and you'll do fine:)
Chris Coffin is one of the best professors, if you actually are invested in your education. Physics is a hard subject and Chris makes it as doable as he can w/in OSU's requirements. If you don't take advantage of office hours the class will be difficult, but Chris is always willing to help! He is the most awesome and caring professor at OSU!
Very nice and helpful teacher. Some find him a bad teacher but they are confusing him with the difficulty of the course, which is hard. The class is quite hard. But Coffin himself is a great teacher and if you attend his office hours and try to learn the concepts you will do completely fine. He has very hard tests, but the generous curves help.
At first I was not a fan of his teaching style, but i must admit he has won me over. Hardest exams I have ever taken, but he provides a fair curve. Great instructor of an exhausting subject.
Absolutely the WORST professor. Cannot write on the board in any sort of organized fashion and tests are from upper-division physics classes. He had to curve all the exams around 35% just so SOME people were passing. I passed his classes, but I do not understand Physics. If anything, he made a hard subject even harder. DO NOT TAKE.
I took a lower level class with him, but I don't see what everyone is complaining about. His teaching is great, and I feel like he is really invested in helping his students. Sure the material can be tedious, but if you put in some work, you will see the rewards on the other side. Great guy!
Coffin is a good professor if you are self managed. His system for homework makes it seem like homework is optional, but if you really take the time to cover his material you will do well.
Chris is a passionate instructor. His lectures are boring and mostly explanations of derivations of formulas rather than problem solving strategies. Homework is very time consuming but helpful for preparing for tests, which are worth 70% of the class grade. His tests are comically difficult with class averages around 35% - 45% but he adds points.
IF AT ALL POSSIBLE AVOID THIS PROFESSOR!!!! Worst tests I have ever taken, class average is around 30%. He does not know how to explain the material in a way that would help for the homework and tests he gives out. He even confuses himself on the material. Homework at best will take you around 15 hours a week to complete and is very confusing.
One of the hardest professors out there. Chris expects you to work 30 hours outside of class and lab in order to prepare for tests and work on homework. The tests are very difficult to pass and are worth a HUGE portion of the grade. I would not recomend Chris to anyone taking the physics with calculus series.
Worst prof I've ever had. His tests and homework are time-consuming and very difficult. He covers no material in class, mostly just talks a bunch of philosophical nonsense.
Chris Coffin is a nice guy and is helpful if you attend many of his office hours or see him personally. However, the homework takes hours to do and labs are miserable. The material is not difficult, the workload is just too much to handle. The exams are too long for the time period when considering the amount of detail he requests. Highly failed.
Coffin is notorious for harshly grading homework assignments and writing tests that are not meant to be completed. Fortunately, he curves all his midterms by at least 30%. Coffin demands 100% attendance at labs and asks clicker questions in lecture. If you need help, he's always open during office hours and is a pretty cool guy.
Physics is a hard subject and his test reflect this. However there is a fair curve (sometimes 30% or more) that will save your grade. For a boring subject he tries his best to make it interesting. Labs are mandatory if you want a decent grade. Optional recitation is helpful for working out homework problems. Office hours are a grade saver.
Absolutely terrible for introductory physics (yes, physics with calculus is still an introduction to physics for most). A solid understanding of physics concepts is almost necessary going into his classes due to the difficulty of HW & exams. Tends to be very ambiguous about what is expected of students regarding different types of problems. Avoid.
If you have to consistently curve tests for 35% or more then you're not doing your job well; listening to anyone coming out of the tests, they were amazed at how little the homework and tests prepared them. Way too much homework,, I don't have all day to do Physics. Taking him again this term; would have avoided but he was the only one available
Nice guy. Cant teach at all though. Dont learn a thing in class. Too much homework and it doesn't prepare you at all for exams. I passed with a only a C because the labs are super easy(but unclear) and i took 2 years of IB physics in high school always got a 'B'or higher. His TA graders are harsh. Never got more than 45% on a hw assignment.
Sure he may be a nice guy, but by far one of the worst teachers that I have ever had to take a class from. 1st off, you can expect about a 35% to a 50% curve on every test. His homework takes forever and is graded harshly, and getting less than a 50% every time on it makes it feel useless. Avoid taking a class with him at all costs, you wont regret.
Avoid his class like the plague. Learned nothing in class, tests were nothing like homework or labs. I ended up spending the lecture period reading a textbook (not the one he assigned) because it was more useful
He is an absolute jerk. His tests are ridiculous and absolutely impossible to complete in the time given. His homework is hours and hours of work and then you get 30% on it so it doesnt ever end up even being worth it because your crappy exam average will override it anyways. He is a terrible professor and in no way is this introductory physics.
He's really nice, and a good teacher. It takes getting used to his teaching style, but he's a great lecturer. His tests are hard, and the first one is a shock , but his curves and grading scale are very fair. After the first couple tests, you get used to the format and can figure out what how to get points. He's not easy, but you learn your stuff.
Chris is a really nice guy, and really knows the subject well. My only issues with this class are that he doesn't use blackboard, so you cannot see your grades throughout the term. His Exams are very difficult so you depend on the curve. His homework is very lengthy and is often difficult to understand if you aren't reading in addition to lecture.
Exams do NOT reflect what is learned/are too comprehensive for time alotted.
He sincerely cares about student learning and is very helpful in office hours. Do the homework thoroughly and you'll be fine.
Physics 211 should not be as hard of a class as he makes it. His test are extremely lengthy and the directions are vague at best. His tests do not reflect the homework AT ALL and the average score usually falls between 30-50 percent. The textbook is not required for this class, but if you don't buy it and read it religiously, then you WILL fail.
Ph 211 is a bacc core and an introduction to general physics. Coffin made it impossoble to pass. His test are too hard and are not clear. He doesn't explain during class. I regret taking this course.
Chris Coffin is the worst professor I have ever had. He makes no sense during lecture and nothing he talks about helps you on the tests. He makes his tests so that you fail on purpose. Do not take his class omg you will fail trust me.
The 'homework' is all previous test questions. All you have to do to do great in this class is do the hw and go to lab. Going to lecture will make completing the homework easier, but isn't necessary. If you take the time to understand his solutions on all the hw sets, tests are cake. Textbook is very clear and concise, recommend looking at it
Tests contain questions about topics not covered in class, are too long for the time available, and are graded harshly. Homework is not graded - no way to gauge how your're doing.
Physics is hard, and he does not sugar coat it. He does an excellent job teaching the material and helps a ton in office hours. Very nice guy. The tests are killer, be prepared.
Not a good professor. he doesn't keep grade tallies (if you want to know, keep it yourself) and his homework sets are ridiculous in difficulty when compared to other people's interpretation of the same course. He struggles to answer questions clearly in class and does an overall poor job of understanding students.
Chris is fantastic. He is a very tough professor, in the sense that his tests are difficult, but he will move heaven and earth to prepare you for the test if you just show up to office hours. He gives great examples and can usually guide anyone through even some of the toughest topics if you give him the time.
He's a great professor. The people who did poorly just didn't do the optional homework. Do the optional homework.
worst teacher ever, and an overall mean man that takes joy in failing his students. even the other physics teacher talk about how awful he is.
If you have a heavy load, do not take this with Chris. You will need LOTS of time to do the reading and figure what the hell to study. The class overall is EXTREMELY UNORGANIZED. Its so unclear to as to what you need to do be successful. He doesn't use Canvas, so that makes things difficult. He uses his own terribly designed website. DONT DO IT!!!
Turn in homework is "grading" fake midterms and is open to a lot of interpretation. Syllabus is over-complicated and the class as a whole is unorganized.
Coffin is one of the worst teachers I have ever experienced. There is no guidance or "teaching" done in classes. He simply provides a topic for discussion and then you get lost in his rambling. He is a nice guy, but his teaching is not good. You do not want to take this class unless you want to teach yourself EVERYTHING. His tests are also HARD!
All the content that the professor supplies is unnecessarily complicated. Lectures are ok, just confusing. Tests don't reflect prep problems or HW . Tests have been written 1-2 days before exam dates. The average class exam scores so far: MT1:52/200,MT2:69/250. The final will most likely follow this trend and is 250pts. exams are majority of grade.
Tests are extremely difficult, average on the first two midterms were both below 30 percent. Doesn't give high curves (14 percent, then 10 percent) compared to the other reviews I read (they said he gave 30+ percent curves).
I respect Coffin for his teaching style of creating 'new, never before seen problems' because that's exactly what you're going to be solving in the real world. However I think it's not the right place to be using it in a 200-level class where students should be learning the basics and fundamentals of physics. This class is tough, expect to get a C.
I don't know why people are so critical of Chris. Physics is a challenging subject, but Chris does an excellent job of teaching the material. He gives many valuable resources you should study to better understand what the exams will reflect. Yes the exams are hard, but he gives a fair adjustent to compensate for the class average.
At office hours Chris Coffin more than willing to assist you with just about anything you need. If you don't go to office hours, at least go to lecture or you'll be retaking the class next term. Impossibly high standards on exams; tests routinely curved by 20% or more. I would not retake a class with him. Didn't open the book once-didn't help.
The homework is really weird, which is to grade a hypothetical student's exams. Found it to be quite useless. Overall, I think what really screwed this course was the exams. They were way too difficult, and I don't see how anyone can finish them in the time allowed. Average on exams was about 25 percent. At least he tries his best to help.
A lot of people don't like coffin because of his tough tests. After having him for 3 terms (ph 211, 212, and 213) I have noticed he is getting better at giving more fair tests. He grades the class very fairly as a C- is 50%. for every test if the average is less than 50%, he will give everyone a point adjustment so that the average will be at 50%
This class is challenging. Coffin is the hardest 211-213 physics teacher at OSU, case closed. However, I think he is the best teacher of the bunch. If you aren't good at physics, don't take this class. If you want a challenge, then go for it. I got As in 212 and 213, it's possible despite what people say. A word of advice, do ALL of the prep sets.
Coffin is a very nice person but the absolute worst professor I have ever come across . He really isn't qualified to teach the courses he does, he grades primarily on format. You can answer everything right but if you don't write it out the way he wants to see it (which he does not teach) you will get failing grades.
Absolutely diabolical. This class is clinically insane. Don't expect to do much learning in lecture if you sign up for this class. The learning MUST be done on your own via reading the textbook, doing prep sets, and memorizing the syllabus and grading structure.
Be prepared to learn the course material outside of class. Chris Coffin does no lecturing, and class time is spent doing clicker questions. If you come to class prepared, you will finish the question in 5 minutes and sit in silence for 45 minutes. The test questions are often meant to trick you and you are rewarded for mindlessly writing equations.
Lectures were OK, but the few homeworks he assigns are utterly insane (just like the tests). Raw averages are very low - a 55% overall passes you with a C. He is helpful in office hours though. I took the other physics classes with other OSU profs, and honestly, much preferred that.
I love this professor! He cares deeply about the course and is eager to do whatever it takes to help his students succeed. I got 50% (the average) on all of the exams and passed the class with a B. Physics is a hard subject and requires lots of outside of class practice! I enjoy lectures because its mainly group collaboration and critical thought.
I took the PH 21x series with Coffin and I loved him as a lecturer. He engages with his students BUT Chris has a bad habit of preparing HW AND test problems that are difficult. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Doing HW during office hours is honestly what saved me. Go to lecture. If you can, take ENGR 201 before PH 213.
While he is a nice guy, his exams are incredibly difficult. I passed with a C only because of the lab assignments. I did poorly on all the midterms and often had no idea what was going on with the questions. If you want to make your life easier take physics with someone else. Otherwise, be prepared to work hard to earn a C.
Professor Chris Coffin really carried during my course I feel that without your help and world of encouragement I would never have passed. Thank you professor many cookies 4 u.
Hardest series of classes I took in college. Lectures make the material seem easy but the hw and tests are anything but. Be prepared to do 20+ hours on hw weekly and still be lost during the test. If you want to get a good grade on his tests, do the hw twice, never use your calc on the test, write down all the relative equations and write faaaaast.
Chris is an amazing teacher. He is an authentic dude and is really good at explaining concepts that sometimes aren't exactly intuitive. I enjoy his lectures and his grading criteria is very fair. Test's are challenging but fair. If you show up to class/lab, do your HW, and do the practice problems you should be good.
Teaching style doesn't work at all for me. I get nothing out of lecture, need help on all of the homework because I can't do any of it myself, and score far below average on every midterm. There's way too much homework each week, 10-20 page packets with problems that take an hour each, has 3 hour labs, midterms test you on optional prep problems.
Awesome guy, lot of people seem to have a ton of difficulty with his stuff. He is pretty heavy on the homework but not too bad if you ask me. A little light on the basics of using each skill, instead he goes for all encompassing questions. Labs are a pain and the only thing I have any real complaints about, too much time sitting on my rear.
Chris is a very good lecturer. Probably the best option in Oregon state's physics department for the 211 series. However he assumes you're spending between 6 and 10 hours a week outside of class working on assignments, problems sets, and reading the textbook. If you don't have the time or will to do this, the class is like drinking from a fire hose
Be prepared for the worst. His tests are incredibly difficult, albeit he's a very qualified teacher. He's one of the best teachers I've ever had, in terms of pedagogy. Go to his office hours.
The class is extremely hard
Chris is one of the best teachers I have ever encountered in OSU. He's engaging, fun, and extremely caring during his office hours. His tests and homework, however, prepare for the worst. Do not attempt them by yourself; go to the Wormhole. Lesson learned the hard way...
If you are looking for a professor who is going to babysit you through the course, Coffin is not the guy. However, if you are looking for a professor who will make you a better independent learner and problem solver, Coffin delivers. He offers loads of resources to help prepare for exams, and even with 500 students, he'll learn your name.
One of the worst classes I've taken. His examples in class are quite simple to follow, but then problems on homework and exams are beyond difficult. Inverted classroom teaching style- where basically you spend 6 hours learning the material yourself outside of class. Recitation was very useful in practicing what he didn't explain.
To be honest, I know Chris is a good guy. But if the inverted classroom is not your style, its gonna be really tough. Youre graded on basically 4 things, clicker (class participation), labs, HW, and tests. Its up to you to grasp the material, Coffin clarifies. Beware, the HW is very very challenging. It all comes down to personal responsibility.
Chris cares about his students and their success, but his labs/homeworks/tests are unreasonably hard. Even if you master all of the above, you may still be blindsided on the exam. My best advice is to use your note sheet to your advantage and after you write all of the equations, write examples. That was the only way I passed 211 and 212.
Chris is a great guy. He really cares about his students and tries his best to help in any way possible, but you also need to be putting in a fair share of work. His lectures and clicker questions are simple and easy to follow, but his exams and homework sets are really HARD compared to anything in his lecture. Def need to put in the hours to pass.
Imagine being given basic building tools and told the rough concept of how to build a shed. Not really an example but just the broad strokes. Now, imagine the HW set asks you to build the Sistine Chapel, and the exams are akin to then being asked to build a mausoleum. You will get a bad grade, this is a weed out class, take it as late as possible.
He's the type of professor that if you put in the hours, you can probably get a B. As an engineering student I cannot afford taking over 18 credits and putting enough hours in this class, be sure to read a lot and prepare for the unexpected on exams and HW.
very tough class, will only do well if you study HARD or are somehow naturally good at physics
Coffin is an extremely nice person and is pleasant to be around. At first you'll think the class isn't too bad. That will COMPLETELY change after the first HW/Exam. His exams and HW's are on the same content covered in lecture but taken to a completely different level. It's like learning addition in math and then being asked to solve a system of eq
Coffin is a really good professorif you want to understand physics, take his class. He does a good job of providing lots of resources and spends a lot of time in the Wormhole, I didn't go often but it was always really helpful. Do the prep on the calendar, and you'll be fine. His HW is insanely hard, though, and tests are only a couple steps down.
Had him for 211 and was worst class in college for me. His homework and midterms were impossible... test averages were in the 30s for the final and a passing grade is 53 percent. There was no way to prep for his exams except write equations and process down. Take any other prof for physics if you can... makes a challenging class too difficult
Chris's class is probably twice as hard as any other professor teaching the physics 21x sequence at OSU. If you plan to take a physics major that is a good thing because it prepares you for upper division physics really well. If you are just taking 21x to satisfy graduation requirements I would go elsewhere.
