If you want to learn about global issues like capitalism, global warming, world hunger, etc from an extremely liberal biased stand point than this is the class for you. This class is interesting but you dont learn a fair view of the issues. A lot of work for a gen-ed but easy A if you keep on top of things.
Chris is a great teacher in my opinion. His assignments are mostly reading but his quizzes are basically common sense global issues. He knows what hes talking about considering sociology and his class isn't extremely stressful if you actually do a little reading here and there. His class is basically just open discussion and ideas about issues. A+
He has a lecture based class, that is much to do with discussion based learning. He is genuinely a nice guy and likes what he teaches, but for a science type major it is hard to get the point. If you have an interest in the material you are fine, if you don't it'll be challenging. Necessary to do the reading due to pop quizzes.
Prepare to read a lot. You get assigned maybe two or three readings every class period. Besides that, the class is structured into three essays, midterm, and final. He doesn't grade the essays too harshly as long as you prove your point. The midterm was difficult. Regardless, he is a very intelligent man and this class is very enlightening.Take it
Great guy, great class. He will help anyone who needs help and will stop at nothing to include you in the class. Attendance is only mandatory for the pop quizzes, which you can use notes on! His final isn't cumulative so its not bad at all. He makes this class fun and easy. Only take it with him! He will make you laugh everyday. Such a nice guy
LOVED THIS CLASS! My favorite class this semester. A good amount of reading after every class but almost all of it was interesting. Class is focused around capitalism which was cool to see how it ties into everything. Professor is funny and cares about the students. PARTICIPATE in class and it pays off in your grade. 2 of the quizzes were freebies.
Pretty good professor. The topics in class were interesting and there are readings due for each class. You really only need to do the readings in case there's a pop quiz, which you can use your notes on. He seems genuinely interested in what he teaches and loves class discussion. Tests were easy and the final isn't cumulative.
His class isn't a normal copy notes from a powerpoint like machines kind of class. It's about doing the reading and having an actual discussion about it. Easy if you read and show up every class.
Great teacher. Classes are mostly comprised of discussion. He talks about the readings (all articles, no textbook required) and then asks for student opinions. If you listen in class, ask questions, and go over the study guide, you'll do well on tests. He is very enthusiastic about the subject matter, and likes to hear student opinions. Fun class.
No textbook required, though he gives online readings, you don't need to do all of them, but they help. Attendance isn't required, but the lectures are virtually all of the material, and as long as you take decent notes the tests are easy. There are 3 exams (not cumulative) and 3 readings responses. I found the material pretty interesting too.
He is speaks very eloquently and is very well educated, which makes understanding his concepts difficult at times. I enjoyed the material, but this class was very hard. No textbook is required, but the readings he assigns are very dense and long, and in my opinion not well suited for freshmen and sophomores.
Pretty interesting class and he is very enthusiastic about the subject. There are 3 short essays to do, but if you go to class you dont really need to do the reading. He posts a study guide that is extremely helpful. He also uses blackboard to answer questions. I would recommend this teacher!!
This class was him talking and showing powerpoints full of graphs and charts. Doing the reading before hand would deffff make the lecture a lot easier to understand. The test were difficult but he posts a study guide. In order for me to get a 87 on the final I studied for it a week in advanced. This class is not an easy A.
Chris is an awesome professor. He keeps the class engaged in the topic and is fun to talk to. Grades are online quizzes that can be a little difficult if you don't pay attention in class but overall easy, and weekly reflection journals. Journals are 250 and you almost always get a 95 on it. Overall a great class. Definitely recommend.
Prepare to read a lot and attend some lectures where you have absolutely no idea what is going on. That being said, the quizzes are hard and there are no exams. The journals are easy grade-boosters and he is fair in grading. A 3 credit class with no exams is absolute gold, so take this course if you can.
HIGHLY recommend his class. i took this class just to fulfill the gened requirement but i learned SO MUCH from this class and actually enjoyed attending. you learn a lot from this class that you wouldn't typically think about or learn in another class. he also cared about his students. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend.
Definitely a cool guy, but all he does is lecture for an hour and a half. Literally have to use every last ounce of strength to stay awake in class. His power points don't help, and you can only rely on the notes you take for his online tests.
There's a lot of "reading" that goes into this class, but you really don't have to do it if you go to every class. I wish I had known from the beginning how to take this class, because all you have to do is go to EVERY CLASS and write down literally EVERY WORD he says. Taking notes on a computer makes it so easy, and then you can do super well.
He's a really smart guy. There's a lot of reading that goes along with it, but if you go to class, you will be fine because he explains it. Lectures are sometimes hard to stay awake for (especially TT classes because they are longer) There is no final. Mini exam which is open note every other week, and a discussion post every other week as well.
This class, in my opinion, was kind of tough. I had never taken sociology before so having a teacher who just straight lectured for an hour and fifteen minutes wasn't the greatest. You have about 7 quizzes online that are open note and the lowest is dropped. There's also 7 discussion posts. No midterm. No final. No book. But a LOT of reading PDFs.
Prof Colocousis is incredibly passionate about what he does, but he expects his students to be able to understand the higher-level readings and concepts that aren't that easy. I went to his office hours once because I wasn't understanding what was going on in class & he basically just repeated his lecture, so I walked out just as clueless as before
This class isn't terrible at all: no tests, no final, no papers. There is only 7 online quizzes which aren't bad at all if you read the pdfs and take notes in class. Lectures are super boring but can be interesting at times. He uses unnecessary vocab but can be very funny. Extra credit is available. overall i recommend this class, not hard
Within the first week, I considered dropping this class, but i am so glad I didn't. Don't let the readings scare you-as long as you skim them and pay attention in class, you can get As on the tests. Chris is super passionate about what he teaches which helps a lot. seriously go to class though or you're screwed
Take this class as a GenED!!! Its so easy, there's 7 online tests, open note, and the lowest one gets dropped. I've gotten a 100 on every one so far. The reading can be dense and long, but if you do it class is easy to follow and very interesting.
Great class! Good lectures, funny, and speaks well. The lectures are a bit boring sometimes because of the course material (the course covers some pretty complicated issues) but he does as good a job as anyone of keeping you interested. The quizzes are extremely easy, all online + open book and he drops the lowest grade. Easy if you do the reading.
TAKE THIS CLASS! 7 online tests (open book, etc) every 2 weeks, nothing is cumulative. Probably one of, if not my favorite, class at JMU so far. As long as you go to every class and pay attention, doing the reading (all online-so no buying a textbook) isn't totally necessary, just skimming before the tests would be fine.
Chris comes across as intimidating at first- he talks really fast, so be prepared to take notes in whatever way you can record information quickest. He assigns a LOT of reading, but some of it is unnecessary, and he does a good job of explaining everything thoroughly in class. He is so passionate about what he does, and has a lot of character.
The course content and amount of reading is a bit daunting, but the way he operates class makes it pretty simple. Just do the readings, come to class, and take a short test every 2 weeks. The issue is attendance is essential to passing, and missing even one lecture could be costly. The lectures are pretty long and boring sometimes too.
Chris does a lot of talking, but keeps it interesting and is very animated in his lectures. Discussions are very open and actually fun sometimes. You don't really have to do the readings, just open-ended weekly journal and two essays. Learned a lot in this class and am definitely more confident in my intellectual knowledge of the environment now.
CC is honestly the best lecturer I've ever had. But being that class is ALL lecture made it difficult. Quizzes were tough for me, but I ended up with a B in the class. Can easily earn up to three extra credit points to your final course grade (life saver). No tests, just 7 online quizzes (25 questions, 1 hour). GO TO CLASS! Get someone's # too!
Class consisted of 7 online quizzes. Must have knowledge of lectures to do well on them. He assigns a lot of readings, but they're not really necessary, as his quizzes are focused mainly on his lectures. He talks fast and throws out big words, so don't let his main point get muddled through his flourishes. Interesting lectures. Take good notes.
CC is such an awesome professor! His class is all lecture with only 7 online quizzes (25 questions, 50 minutes). He is my favorite lecturer!! He explains everything in detail and answers all questions! There is reading for every class but he goes over all of it in his lectures. Office hours are great with him and he will go over tests with you!
I LOVED Prof. C!! Although attendance isn't mandatory, I still showed up to his class every time because his lectures were so interesting. His class consists of 7 tests, no midterm or final, and the lowest test grade is dropped. The tests are completely lecture based so I highly recommend not skipping too much. TAKE THIS CLASS.
The lectures were REALLY interesting, and even if you don't care about the topics it's still easy to get a good grade by showing up and taking good notes. Readings, but I didn't do them and got an A. 7 online tests, and your final grade is the average of the 6 highest scores you get. Opportunity for 3 extra credit points by writing discussion posts.
Professor Colocousis is a homie. He is a chill dude and is really passionate about what he teaches. There are only 7 online quizzes and potential 3 points of extra credit. Make sure you attend lectures because the quizzes are straight from them.
Dr. C is one of the best professors I've had at JMU! There are 7 online exams, but they're really easy if you take good notes in class. There's no textbook, and you can earn up to 3 points of extra credit to your final grade (which saved me). If you can have him as a professor, take him!
I love this class! Professor Colocousis made the lectures so interesting and easy to follow. There are 7 exams and no cumulative final and as long as you take good notes they are super easy and straightforward. There is a good bit of reading to do, but it is manageable and always organized. He offers extra credit too! Overall great class
My favorite professor I've ever had. There is a lot of reading involved, but he explains it all the next class which makes it really easy. He's incredibly entertaining and tries to learn everyone's names even in a large lecture. There's 7 open note quizzes and up to 3 extra credit points. Make a friend in his class because you can't miss class
He is a nice guy and really funny too. He is very smart, which makes listening to his lectures tricky. He talks really fast and expects you to read a LOT. I never read any of the required readings he assigned, I just tried to type everything he said WORD FOR WORD and then used my notes on the quizzes. Only 7 online quizzes, none are cumulative.
Amazing class. Very nice/approachable, as long as you show up to class and invest time in your homework and papers it's easy to get an A. Weekly journals and two essays are your only grades so you never need to worry about studying as long as you pay attention
Lecture HEAVY. 7 online quizzes, 1 every two weeks. If you do three online discussion posts, he will add 3 points to your grade. The quizzes are based on EVERYTHING he says, so WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING! Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you don't come, you will be screwed. No HW or tests. Assigned reading, but I never did them and got and A!
Overall a pretty easy class with a pretty easy professor. Lectures were interesting but to do well you really have to take good notes. Grade is 100% based on 7 Canvas Quizzes and he gives opportunity for extra credit. Not really much work outside of going to class.
Very good professor. All tests were open note and online. He posted readings but I never read them because he went over them in class. Take a lot of fast notes in class because it talks really fast. But also very available if you don't understand something. Allows for extra credit.
Colocousis is a great lecturer, but you have to go to class to get all the material! A lot of what he says in lecture is on the tests. Every test is online and easy as long as you review the lecture material / slides that he posts on canvas. Office hours are always available. Each class discusses and explains the reading. great choice for a genEd!
Professor Colocousis is the absolute best. He's very passionate about his class and super helpful outside of class too. Every test is online and open note but with that being said you gotta go to class. He assigns pre-lecture readings but they aren't too bad. If you need to take this class or just looking to fill the cluster, TAKE HIM!
The class is kind of easy. 100% of grade is 7 online quizzes, lowest dropped. BUT, he repeats himself, you don't know whats important write down, and he really doesn't care about his students, more obviously when we went online. Going online lectures doubled in length, he didn't care if come students could hear them said "try another machine" WHAT?
Hes overall an okay guy, definitely a little arrogant. The class itself is pretty easy, you have to go to do well. However, he doesnt really care about his students and can blow you off, not very helpful.
He's a nice guy and everything, but the subject he teaches is pretty boring. He talks way too slow for my taste which can make the class even more boring. 7 tests and 7 discussions and if you show up for class/watch the lectures you will be fine.
He taught asynchronously. I thought the lectures were very boring and long. One to two readings per lecture. If you read EVERY text and watch EVERY lecture you'll be fine. 7 discussions and 7 tests. Discussions were pretty easy because you can discuss whatever you want from the unit. Tests were iffy. Open note, but not easy.
His class was taught asynchronously, and it was literally my favorite class this semester, so easy!! I had his class twice a week and there was a video lecture and reading posted on those days. They take time but if you watch them it's really all the material you need for the tests and discussion posts. The topics were also really interesting.
He is an amazing professor, really well-spoken and you can tell that he loves the material that he teaches. There are exams around every two weeks, based on 5 lecture videos. If you take good notes and pay attention, you will be fine. There is an online discussion post every two weeks, which is easy and graded very kindly. LOVE HIM!
Super great professor. As long as you listen to the recorded lectures and pay attention, you'll be fine. 7 exams and discussions, but a few drop. No final exam.
Chris is the best, take him, just take him. He rocked in a very difficult semester to be a great prof. One of the best I have ever had, super fun and caring, wants you to succeed, a fair grader, and he's a really nice person. If you have to take this course, take Chris.
The lectures were asynchronous. There were readings associated with each lecture, but there weren't test questions on those readings (I never read them & got A's); the test was mostly based on the lectures, so take good notes! There are 7 units with a discussion post & test for each unit. Chris is sort of a goofball in the lectures and cares a lot!
This was by far my favorite class I took this semester. The material was interesting and he made lectures easy to follow along to by having the option to turn on subtitles which was super helpful. He gave you a week to take exams and turn in discussion boards including a 24 hour grace period. Definitely take him!!!! He deserves all the hype!
I absolutely loved him for sociology. There was a total of 7 exams all semester and 7 discussion posts, but none are cumulative If you take good notes, the exams are easy. They come straight from lectures. Although he gives a lot of readings, I didn't read any all semester because he goes over them in class. Loved him and overall easy
7 discussion posts that are very easy and 7 exams. make sure to take good notes. he is very friendly and willing to help and go over what you got wrong on the tests
Prof C is an amazing teacher. He gives you side readings but honestly if you watch his lectures (asynchronous) and take notes, the tests are super easy. Test q's are straight from the lectures. The only other grades from this class are from discussion boards (which are easy 100%) Basically if you aren't super lazy, easy A. Very interesting material
Mr. Colocoucis is the reason I'm now minoring in Sociology. Great content and a great guy, was super understanding about COVID craziness and made the class an easy A while still interesting. Thanks you Mr. Colocoucis!
Chris is an amazing professor, the only homework is readings, which are never that bad. Take lots of notes on readings and lectures, the tests are solely based off of them and the questions are specific. if you take notes and show up to class you will do well.
If you have the opportunity to take a class with Prof. C, do it. He is an amazing lecturer and really cares about his students. 357 is a super interesting class and I actually really looked forward to listening to him. Learned a lot!
Chris's class is so easy! There are readings, but you do not need to do them because he goes over it in class. There are 7 tests but he drops the lowest score and you have the opportunity for 3 extra credit points on your final grade. He posts the power point slides but if you go to the lecture you will pass!
7 exams also offers extra credit, exams are fairly easy to do well on,
I hated this class so that may be part of why I did not do well, but this course only had 7 exams in total with the lowest being dropped, which made it almost impossible for me to pull my grade up once I figured out what he expected in the class. Overall, he was a nice guy but not my kind of professor.
The teacher is nice, but your whole grade consists of only 7 tests. The tests are taken on your own and you usually have 4 days to take them. The tests are soooo confusing and the questions are all from super long readings he assigns. If you do not have to take this class I would not.
The class wasn't the easiest as the only way you learn content is in class by what he says. The PowerPoints don't have enough info for you to pass. There is no final and 7 exams that are open note. Your grade is only based on tests so if you do poorly on a test you're screwed. Hes a fine prof, the class is boring if you don't like sociology.
Professor Colocousis made sociology an interesting class. Now I know the reviews say that he only grades off test but he does add points back and even includes 7 extra credit opportunities. By far one of the best professors Ive had. If you get a chance take the class.
Professor Colocousis made a not super interesting class a lot more interesting. Attendance was not mandatory, but the exam questions come straight from his lectures (what he says is more important than what's necessarily on the slides!) It was an easy A and I highly recommend taking him!
Chris is a great prof, you can tell he is passionate. 7 tests all open note & lowest score dropped. Opportunity to earn up to 3 points back to your final grade. Was a really easy& interesting class. There are readings for every class but if you go to class you don't need to read them because he goes over what you need to know. Take him!! easy A
This guy is really passionate about what he teaches. His lectures are long but they help a lot. He only has 7 tests the whole year, and that is all you are graded on. Plus the lowest tests score gets dropped. Really nice class to have with the great professor and the easy grading.
This was a great class! It was all discussion based, plus 2 weekly discussion posts, 1 weekly discussion question, and 3 papersnothing you have to study for which is so nice!! I love Chris, such a great guy, gives awesome essay feedback. He also is super understanding and flexible. Content got slightly repetitive at times, but great class overall!
Professor Colocousis is truly an amazing professor. This class is lecture based, but the content is incredibly interesting and I enjoyed coming to class. Quizzes are open note, which creates an environment that fosters learning in an enjoyable way without stress. He also makes an effort to learn names! High recommend this class.
Sociology of disasters is an interesting course, and Chris seems to be an awesome guy who definitely knows his material. Class is only graded on 3 tests and 2 papers, attendance isn't mandatory. The tests are hard, he assigns 30+pg readings before each class, don't have time to read those, especially taking this class as an elective for my minor
sociology of disasters is a really interesting course and professor colcousis does a great job teaching it. only a few tests and papers but the tests are straight-forward. attendance is not mandatory but it helps a ton if you go to class to do well on both the tests and papers
I did not like this professor. I took him for study abroad and he did not understand the purpose of 1) Gen Eds and 2) study abroad. He was WAY too extra and treated a gen ed course like it actually matters. He just did too much. If you want a chill teacher that understands the nature of gen eds don't take Chris. Nice guy but is just way too much.
Chris is a great and passionate professor. Due to the size of his classes, attendance is not mandatory, and the only things you are graded by are 7 quizzes throughout the semester, which are open-note. He also gives plenty of extra-credit opportunities. Although his classes are just him lecturing, he keeps it interesting enough to stay focused.
This class was not the most interesting to me but fulfilled the gen ed requirement. There are seven tests to make up your grade and extra credit opportunities to add 3 points to your overall grade. The class was lecture-heavy, but sometimes he told us questions that would be on the open-note, take-home tests.
This is probably the best sociology course you can chose to take. While the information in the class may be boring, Professor Colocousis made the lectures bearable. The class is only graded on exams, but they are easy as long as you read the notes. He gives extra credit with every unit and while it helps to go to lecture, notes are online.
Prof. Colocousisis a really nice guy, but if you don't go to class you won't do well on his tests. There are 7 exams and they are all based on what he says, not the presentations posted to Canvas. You have to be willing to go to class/listen if you want to get an A. Otherwise, class can be interesting and you don't actually need to do the readings.
Great professor and very passionate about the subject. Exams are easy if you show up to class, but if you don't, they are open note, so nothing really to worry about. Discussions on canvas are extra-credit; if you do 3, that's 3 points added to your overall grade, so easy way to bring your grade up.
Great class. 7 exams (less than 30 questions, and drops the lowest), and he offers up to three extra credit points. Exams are open book/open notes, majority of material comes from lectures. Maybe drink some caffeine before class because they are kinda long and not so entertaining.
Absolutely amazing! Best professor and class I've taken so far! The class itself is interesting but his lectures are too. Attendance isn't mandatory but I want to show up every day. There's 3 exams and 2 papers, but that's all the work for the class. The essays are kinda intensive but the exams are easy and open note. Just show up to class though.
great class if you are willing to show up. there are 7 exams (lowest dropped) and a chance to get 3 points added to your final grade with discussion posts. exams are mainly based on what he says in lecture so you have to go and take notes to do good on the exams. they are take home and open note! lecture can be boring sometimes but worth it
Easiest Gen Ed ever. Dr Colocousis is SO nice and awesome. You are only graded by 7, multiple choice, online, open note exams. Attendance isn't mandatory however class was always interesting and it's better to take notes there rather than at home. 10/10 reccommend.
He is very passionate about sociology, but his lectures can get pretty boring and makes it hard to focus. But there is really no reason you shouldn't get an A because all the tests are open notes and each unit has an extra credit discussion post to fill out - which is very considerate.
All I did for this class was attend lectures and take notes on what he says and was able to get a 98. This class was extremely easy and I didn't need to do the readings, extra credit(but it's there if you need), or any work out of class. The tests were open note and as long as you take good notes it's almost word for word what he says in class.
I have never taken a Soci course before, but he made it such a positive experience! He is super intelligent, his lectures are good, and all of the exams/essays are fair. I recommend!!
TAKE HIM! all tests are open notes and all answers can be found in powerpoint. there is a lot of reading but you don't need to read them for the tests. easiest gen ed i've taken, may be on the boring side but so so easy and all tests are online and at home.
Super easy gen ed. All exams are take home and open note and the lowest grade is dropped. Every question is straight from the lecture, so as long as you go to class and take notes the exams are very easy.
I went to class maybe five times total and got an A. The lowest exam was dropped, but the class was interesting when I did go. I just had too busy a schedule and did not need to attend to get a good grade.
A good professor who makes sociology more interesting and shows a lot of passion for the subject. Class is straightforward lectures, and the only grades are 7 online take home open note exams, which are easy if you attend lectures and take good notes. Also provides extra credit which are discussion board posts about a topic within the unit.
Very passionate about what he teaches. 7 online take home tests, however he said he will most likely switch that since he thinks everyone used AI to pass this semester. Only grades are the tests plus optional extra credit discussions. Boring/long lectures, don't have to go, but it helps you understand the test material a lot better.
if you go to the lectures this class will be very easy. you are only graded on 7 exams that are online, open note, and taken at home. you can answer a discussion question for extra credit. he's a super funny guy and very passionate but lectures can be kinda boring sometimes. take him for an easy a
My king. Posts all the content for class, for free. Super clear and super interesting lectures. Only grades are 7 tests, so one every two weeks(ish). Tests are super easy if you go to class. If you don't answers can be found in the readings or the slides. No penalty for attendance. Chris is a great character.
Chris is a very cool guy. He is passionate about what he teaches. Lectures were never boring and discussions were always interesting. He does not grade on a whole lot, 3 exams, 2 papers and participation so consider showing up and speaking up!
Lectures can be boring at times, however it's clear that he cares about what he teaches. Posts summary of lecture and gives the slides. Gives topics which will be on the exams. 4 exams in the semester worth 80% of your grade, and then 20% is attendance through PollEverywhere. Really kind and has accessible office hours if you're into that.
prof. colocousis is great, kind, & clearly passionate. lectures are important and mandatory, 20% of grade is participation through polleverywhere. honestly, just go to lectures and pay attention and you'll do fine. tests are through the testing center, but are open for a week and he provides a study guide. his class made me change my major to soci
Professor Colocousis was a very nice and knowledge full professor although his tests are very confusing and hard. A lot of studying for his exams. And you need to be present in the lectures to understand what's going on. Don't take if you're looking for an easy gen ed
Sweetest man ever. You can tell he's very passionate about what he teaches, which makes lectures super interesting to pay attention to...can be a tad boring though. The only grades are exams and attendance so show up to class. The exams are lowkey are wack but not too challenging. Tanking one isnt the end of the world just lock in for the rest.
This is a lecture-heavy class, and if you zone out for even a second, you'll miss what's going on, so pay attention! There are 4 exams, and they're a bit tough. Participation matters, but you get 3 passes. There are readings, though they aren't mandatory. As a professor, he's okay and I never had any issues, the exams were just hard imo.
I took a class with this Professor and the class itself was a joke. Easy and boring. I would definitely recommend that this professor improve his professionalism when responding to student emails and being respectful to all his students.
This class was so stupid because of the pointless material, the long and boring lectures, and the tests that didn't reflect the content. Do not take this class unless you are a good test-taker. The only nice thing about this class is that the final was online with no lockdown, cameras, or anything.
Good class and content, but only graded on 4 exams. He is knowledgeable and fair with grading, and curved every exam. Lectures are fine, and exams are easy if you do the study guide. I never did the readings, only the study guide, and got an A on every exam.
