Not a bad guy, but horrible at teaching and trying to relate economics to students. He doesn't help prepare for what's on the tests or help understand the concepts..not to mention he confuses himself, which doesn't help when you're trying to take notes.
Great Class, great teacher.
Alrighty, so this man is just awful at lectures. His homework is a guaranteed 100%, but I never see related questions on the exams. I skip his class all the time due to the bad lectures, but i watched Youtube Videos on the chapter topics and passed. So that goes to show how easy the class is, but the teaching sucks.
His lectures are worth going to more than usual for an econ class because he makes jokes the entire time. Attendance is not mandatory though because there are no in-class assignments. I did not attend this class very often and still got a B. The homework is an easy 100%.
Switched into his class last minute. He told me he wouldn't have a lot of homework, he didn't. He doesn't update grades and doesn't inform you of when there is a homework assignment. Super funny and sarcastic. Lectures aren't great. Just read. Do the homework and read. You will do fine. Ask him lots of questions (it helps).
To start off, I had this class at 7:30am and attendance is not mandatory, yet, I still went mainly because Mr. Coombs is hilarious and keeps the class entertained while teaching a not so interesting class. Do the homework, GO TO SI and read the mcgraw hill connect textbook online. The final was the first test in the class I didn't do well on.
My class was at 7:30, not many people showed up. The exams were easy, he also drops the lowest one. You have to read the text and lectures help supplement your learning. Attending your SI sessions also help, definitely attend the exam reviews. Most exams receive curves, the final had 10 points curved. If you put the time in you will get a an A.
His lectures are boring because it is macroeconomics, but he does try to make it more enjoyable. He is a funny guy, and real easy to approach if you have questions or need help with anything. There are bonus assignments and a few homework assignments, but you will need the text book and continuously read if you want to do well.
I didn't go to class once besides syllabus day. He emails us when the test are. I read all the chapters the test is on the day before the test along with his study guides and usually do well. Some of the homework is for bonus points on the test and some of it is a homework grade. Homework grade ones answers are on online quizlets. He's really nice!
I didn't attend class after the second day. If you read the textbook you can't do bad. I finished with an A.
Couldnt ask for a nicer, more approachable ECON teacher. BUT, you never have to go to class. Youre better off reading the book. His lectures are boring and confusing. Dont get me started on his tests; he gives you a practice test, then none of the concepts from it actually show up on the test. The HW is a pain. He does curve and give extra credit.
JUST READ THE BOOK. Literally, every piece of information you need is in the book people. You don't need to go to class, but he is a cool guy. Seriously though, thoroughly read the chapters in the book and take notes, and you can easily get an A+.
Definitely get the textbook! That helps reinforce the stuff he goes over in class. He does a great job at making a not so interesting topic bearable. You really have to pay attention if you're going to gain anything from his lectures. He does give extra credit on each chapter.
Class attendance is not mandatory. If you need additional help and do not understand the textbook, go to class. All you need to do is read textbook before tests and you will be good. Got a B on first test from only going to lecture. Got an A on the next 2 from only reading textbook and not attending class. If you need help, go to office hours.
He was a fun professor, and makes his lectures interesting as much as possible. DO NOT SKIP THIS COURSE. YOU WILL BE VERY CONFUSED ON EXAMS. Overall, this course was extremely challenging. The final is 500 times harder than any other test in the course.
Funny guy who cracks jokes all through lecture. 3 tests (drops 1) and are a little challenging if you do not understand the concepts. Offers extra credit for every test. HAS A 12 POINT GRADING SCALE and does not abide by the +/- system so if you get an 88 that is a regular A. Great guy and cares about his students.
Dr. Coombs is a great ECON professor. The class itself is not easy, but he makes it as simple as possible. Upto 5 easy bonus points are given for each exam. He also curves the tests if needed. He cracks a lot of jokes, and makes it worth going to lecture. If you put in the effort, and go to exam reviews you will do fine.
IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GPA, DONT TAKE HIM! Honestly one of the worst professors. Econ is already tough and he didn't make it any easier for his students. He doesn't give students a chance to answer questions, whether its regarding grades or material. He told us the final would be cumulative, but it was not! Do yourself a favor, & don't take him!
Go to the SI sessions, read, and study. I personally didnt get much out of the lectures. He usually gives a pretty generous curve on exams.
He's not too bad. He ended up curving our final 18 points. His lectures are really hard to pay attention to he gets off topic
PRO'S: 3 tests & the lowest is dropped. Read the book & go to SI sessions you can pull off a B. CON'S: He is HORRIBLE at lectures. By the end of the semester no one goes. You will litereally learn nothing from him. Also, you don't know your grade until the end. Extremely inconsistent, doesn't post grades & is overall bad. Only gives frustration.
Coombs is a funny guy who cracks multiple jokes throughout class. The class is 3 tests(drops 1) at 50%, Homework at 10%, and the Final at 40%. The tests were pretty straight forward and not that bad, but BEWARE of the Final. The only reason I got an A on it was because there was a 23-point curve. So, just hope for the same.
Dr. Coombs is funny but thats about it. Hes one of the better ECON teachers, at least for micro, but the bar is pretty low. His lectures are all over the place and confusing. Sends angry emails when students stop showing up for lecture. Generous extra credit and curves, though. Material is pretty tough but do-able
Im a pretty good student and go to class regulary, but Ive been to every one of Chris Coombs classes and it hasnt helped me WHATSOEVER. Reading the book is crucial for success in this class because his lectures are not over test material which makes showing up for class pointless. 90% of your grade is based on 3 tests and a final. Look elsewhere
he needs to learn ways to bring out lectures, need to understand that he is teaching alot and not alot of them did econ before
His lectures are really boring but he is a funny guy. The tests are basically the only grades with a few homework grades. He often gets off topic and ends up confusing you. The test are multiple choice and based on reading the book(he has the book in his hands while lecturing). If you don't have to take him, find someone else.
Taking ECON2000 is like running in front of an 18 wheeler on the highway. Will you out run the truck or will you get run-over? If you are willing to put in the work you may be able to get by. If not, you are gonna struggle HARD. Whatever you do, just don't stop running because your life / grade depends on it.
The average grades in my class were 65, 47,65 and the final was a 55. I had no idea what my grade was until he put it on final grades. I thought I had a high B then he put c on my final grades. Only plus is there is no plus minus scale
He gets super off topic and is not good at explaining things. Also, class notes and the SI worksheets are generally pretty easy but the tests are SO HARD. I went to every class, every SI, did every homework, and read the book. I got B´s on all of the tests which turned into A´s after the curves. My tip: GO TO THE SI SESSIONS bc this class is HARD!
The class itself was fine. The lectures are super boring and we spent 1.5 hours going over like two things. Somehow there was a huge disconnect between the lectures and the tests. Those tests were the hardest tests I have ever taken. The final felt like the end of the world. Thank God that he curves each test very heavily.
Horrible!! Went for help so many times and still am doing horrible. Cool guy but doesn't care about your grade one bit
Grade A chiller ! Pretty much impossible to fail, like you seriously have to be slow, I mean you go to LSU, so odds are in favor of that. Super caring professor, read the book/ PowerPoints and you can easily get an A without going to class. Gives off a little bit of a sad boy vibe, so maybe offer the man a hug sometime.
went to class for the first 2 weeks and never came back unless i had to take the tests. very soft voice and hard to hear. book is a necessity and attending the SI sessions were EXTREMELY helpful. he had to do heavy curves because the class just did THAT bad. powerpoints are posted on moodle but you basicaly have to teach yourself everything.
Dr. Coombs is the worst professor I have ever had at LSU. For our tests, he does not give nearly enough time to finish and doesn't allow you to navigate between questions. His lectures are just him going through the textbook. He doesn't like answering any questions. He makes this class so much harder than it needs to be. Take anyone else but him.
Dr. Coombs rambles on during his lectures and most of the time it doesn't even make sense. You can try to read the textbook in order to understand the materials, but the tests are EXTREMELY different compared to the materials he posts on Moodle. The average for the final exam was below 65% and there is a likely chance he will NOT curve.
lol the average for the final was 60%. doesn't teach, tests are impossible
Absolutely AWFUL teacher. He gives us no time for his tests and doesnt let us navigate between questions. He was very rude in almost all of his emails and he HATES when you ask questions. This semester was tough because of the pandemic and he couldnt care less. I received my first C in college because of his incompetence and its so unfair.
This professor is the worst teacher i have ever had in my life which is pretty hard considering i've been going to school for 20 years now.
Coombs' lectures are pointless and off topic. His tests were impossible. The test. had countless errors in word problems, and a ridiculous time constraint. We had barley over a minute for each question, and the questions would be long enough so I would have to scroll to finish them. I highly recommend avoiding Coombs.
Worst professor I have ever taken. His lectures are barely related to the course material and it is impossible to pay attention. Never works out any problems in class and does not prepare you for tests. Homework does not correspond to tests. 3 tests and the class average for all them was a 65 or below. He does not curve near enough. Do not take him
Professor Coombs is absolutely the worst professor I have ever taken. His lectures and homework's are completely unrelated to what he puts on his tests. Hates when students ask question's and belittles them he is RUDE. 3 tests make up the majority of your grade, and typically the class average on them is under a 60. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Theres no study guides or any study aids for tests. The questions for practice in the textbook are different than his tests so studying is extremely hard. Messes up test questions and gets his own questions wrong multiple times on his own tests and only notices when its pointed out to him. Absolutely would not recommend
STUDENTS BEWARE! If at all possible avoid this professor. You can read the book and actually learn the material, like not memorize it, truly grasp the overall concepts and your grade wont reflect it. Im an LSU alumna who graduated summa cum laude earning a 2nd degree, and this is by far my worst academic performanceIm praying for a C... AVOID
I don't think this course material is hard, if you read the chapters and study a little, you should get it . HOWEVER, the grading in this course is absolutely absurd. Only 4 tests that are not going to be like anything you learned. I'm an A's and a few B's student but got my first failing grade in this class. Don't waste your time.
Take another economics professor. The course material itself isnt hard, but the tests and exams are formatted in a way that make it unreasonably difficult to do well. Im an A/A+ student, and I got a 76 on the midterm. The class average was a 65. He was very unprofessional when I needed a small accommodation. Do not take his course.
Chris Coombs is the epitome of an awful professor. Lectures are slow, boring, and do little to help you understand the content. Coombs supplements this by not answering emails, offering no study guides, and doing the bare minimum at every turn. It is painfully obvious he does not care at all about his students or teaching. Avoid at all costs.
Coombs does macro a disservice. His flagrant disregard for students is the epitome of my hatred of higher education. He is not willing to help, and, moreover, his help would not be worth your while. Lectures are long and irrelevant. Communist China is thoroughly discussed. If you want your spirits dejected by an angry, belligerent man, take Coombs.
DO NOT TAKE CHRIS COOMBS. Worst professor Ive ever taken at LSU. Does not answer emails and set up class for failure on the final. Gave no study material and tests are impossible. Avoid at all costs
Lectures were not very useful. Lots of students struggled severely due to the final being in person after all the previous assignments were online. To be fair, only 15-20% of students would go to class so what do you expect. 100% go to his office hours!!! He explained the final exam content very well when I went. Just put in some effort.
His lectures were 90% rants on China and never covered the curriculum throughout his class or tests. Then came the final exam which was DEPARTMENTAL, so only 50% of what we covered was actually on the exam. No study guides, practice exams, or help in the class was provided.
He shows how he presents the material that he doesn't care about what's going on. Will give the class a test knowing that they will fail and still do it anyway with no curve. He only cares about teaching the material he has to teach and not his students or their grades.
The worst professor at LSU. He doesnt talk about anything but beer and his divorce. He switches topic about every 30 minutes and he maybe gives about a 10 minutes lecture about what we actually are supposed to be going over. Youre better just studying the textbook.
Semester almost over and he hasnt stayed on topic for a lecture yet.
Chris Coombs might be the worst teacher I've ever had. For one entire hour and a half class, all he talked about was a crawfish app that tells you where to get the best crawfish for the best price. I believe that the economics department is looking into firing the dude, so good for them. The tests look nothing like what the practice is. 0/5
DO NOT TAKE !! AWFUL professor. Had to drop because my grade was unsalvageable and I need this course credit. Tells everyone if you do not go to his lectures, you will not pass, but then talks about China and other irrelevant things the entire hour and a half. Literally had meetings with the Dean of Economics to see if we could get this man fired.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! Makes course harder than it should be. He is very lazy, does not put effort into class, but expects max effort from students. He does curve his tests but he does not give good material to go off of. Lectures are not worth attending, he gets off topic too much. You are better off taking any other econ Professor.
Coombs is a bad professor, but if you are in this class you have to read the textbook (posted on moodle). I didn't go to class and just read the chapters for each exam and watched youtube. He also gives 20 point curves so you only need like a 50 on the exams to make a C. Take another professor if possible, and if not just read the textbook.
The material on the test is not similar to the information presented in class and on the textbook.
This was by far the worst experience I have had with any professor. His class is extremely test and lecture heavy and be prepared for there to be no extra credit. With me still reading all chapters, attending lectures and doing all the work, I still did poorly in the class.Would not recommend taking his class if you have to take ECON 2000.
This professor did not teach in class so you were left on your own to study, and learn everything. Just take a different professor or wait another semester if you can until you can take a. different one.
Avoid at all costs. I got a decent grade but had to study at least a week in advance for every exam. His lectures are so useless, I honestly only went to 5 classes the entire semester. I read the textbook like it was the bible itself to pass this class.
DONT DO IT. YES, IM TALKING TO YOU. JUST DONT.
AWFUL
Only talks about his personal problems in class and his divorce. Worst professor at this university.
Please save yourself from this teacher! He only talks about his life problems during his lectures and expects you to learn everything yourself. He also has an "IDK that's your problem" attitude when you come to him about any problems with his course.
Professor was unorganized and was unable to help out students whenever we asked for help.
He was so bad, that I want to give him a 0. But that's not possible, so I give him a 1.
This man practices tyranny. Please rusticate him. The amount of stress his class gave me is ridiculous. He simply teaches so that we fail. So sadistic that he told us we weren't going to pass his class the first day itself. He just dumps his frustration of being unable to be with his ex-wife on us. Students' grades are his punching bag. :(
DO NOT TAKE!!!! This is quite possibly one of the worst professors you could take for this course. He talked about personal problems with the course during lectures and taught absolutely nothing. AVOID!!!!
Horrible.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!! UNPROFESSIONAL
NEVER take this professor!!! He was a horrible teacher and gave no help. He was off topic for most of the class and wouldnt respond to emails. He tells you on the first day that most of you will fail the class.
Absolutely terrible professor, doesn't care at all about his students. An embarrassment to L.S.U. as a higher education institution.
This professor is not only ridiculously unprofessional but a complete ass as well. How this man has a job at this university I do not know. Avoid this class at all costs.
I took one of his ECON courses and he was so rude to other students and unprofessional. I never learned anything and he never was available to help.
Horrible. Can tell he aint one for teaching. Took this class for an easy A, got it. He seems misogynistic n only gave it to me cuz im a dude. Aint complaining but he made snarky comments to the females n graded them for real. he tried to talk to me abt sports but this dude dont pull n he dont know what he talking abt. he just tryna fit in
Is very mean
Horrible
Worst professor to ever exist.
Avoid Coombs with a 10-foot pole. By far the worst "professor" I've ever taken. His alcoholism and divorce are more important than teaching economics. I had to drop this class in the first month and I have a 3.9 GPA. I was astonished by how incompetent this "professor" was. Save yourself, your time, and your money. Choose another professor.
Bad man a bozo
Worst professor I have ever taken. He was reported by an entire class and his exam average was 50%
There was a tiktok i saw about this guy. He sent an email to a student saying not to take a class with him as professor ever again. This guy is truly the worst of the worst. Never talks about Econ, only his divorce and alcohol. 0/10 would never take again.
This was from the mass email he sent to the class. "If you cannot follow instructions for an online course, it might be best to drop the online course and take ECON 2000 face-to-face. I will not answer questions or reply to emails that relate to the course." He doesn't want his students to ask him questions. What kind of teacher is that?
Doesnt teach. Gives a ton of reading and is super hard for anyone who has a hard time following while reading... hard grader. No option for extra credit.
He does not give great lectures, but his tests are really easy. He gives out practice questions for the test, all of which are on the test. Going to class does not help, but if you read the textbook you will do fine. He gave everyone in the class 100% on homework grades
He gives notes for every chapter which was helpful for his exams. It's really hard to make up your grade if you fail one of his exams though. His practice exams are really useful and it gives you an idea of what you need to be studying. If you prioritize his class and take your time to study you'll do fine in the class.
He was awesome and really funny. All around was a great experience and easy class!
I never went to his class and still got a B. Questions on practice exams are word for word on tests, but half of the test is new questions. Homework was easy and if you understand the homework you will pass the test. Do not need to go to class, does not affect your grade and you can teach yourself through the homework which took barely any time.
I had Coombs for semesters. My first semester having him, we had no reviews for test, lectures were extremely boring and off topic. I had to drop the class. I had to take him again my next semester and he made a 180 turn. I had a B average after all the exams were taken and he increased my B to an A. Easiest class I took my whole time at LSU
He has to be one of the worst professors on campus. you would never be able to tell that this was an economics course based on his lectures. It was mainly about how to make sure your wife will divorce you, how to be an alcoholic, and why China is bad. when I took his class, there was a question about the supply and demand of crack. not professional
He lost his tenure and quit at LSU and Southeastern, and is no longer in higher education. We won. The witch is dead.
I took his course my Sophmore year. I went to his office hours one day. At this time in my life I was quite lost and did not know what I wanted to do. Professor Coombs gave me great advice that ultimately lead me down a path for success. I am extremely greatful. His course was fun, and made Econ click for me.
