If you're looking to transfer to a university Prof. Evans is a great place to learn how to become a better student. He's not only a great teacher but a helpful glimpse at what will be expected of you at the university level. Loved his class.
Evans is an INSPIRATION. If you want a challenge, I strongly recommend that you take his class. He gives great feedback. But be warned, he does talk a lot - and I mean a lot!!!
HARD! very hard teacher, gives a LOT of essays, but he doesnt grade THAT hard on them, its fairly easy to get a B. However, he's very interesting and u do learn a lot
This class was awesome. Was difficult but I absolutely loved it. I wouldn't mind taking the course again. I have never actually enjoyed going to class, least of all an english class, this was the exception.
Very inspiring and passionate, enthusiastic, nice, but hard. His essays are hard, and there are a lot of them. He specializes in Shakespeare so if u dont like Shakespeare don't take him. Hard hard hard! But stimulating class discussions and he's funny!
I have hated english all my life, but Mr. Evans was so inspiring that I actually began to like english. His class was hard and stressful, but the end result was well worth the challenge. Truly great instructor.
His class is challenging, and requires a ton of reading. Getting a B is doable, but an A is a tough. His class is fun and you'll learn a lot. You wont fall asleep but you will have a headache from all the reading.
Mr. Evans is a wonderful teacher and when he is into something that he's teaching, you can actually feel all of his emotions and excitement =) Now, that's when you can tell when a teacher loves to teach. =)
Chris is the best English teacher. I'm not a writer and don't even like writing, but he got me interested. I got an A in 100 and 101. Very hard grader!!! Participation is important too. Helpful professor.
very competent and funny. great teacher, loved his class!
Prof Evans is very enthusiastic when it comes to discussing the literature. He seems to enjoy teaching and this allows students to become more involved in the literature. He is tough on grading and assigns quite a bit of reading.
Also Hum 101H, Eng 102H & 280. Needless to say, I like the guy- I'm not even an Eng major. Chris cares about his students, really knows and cares about the material, and challenges you to think about it in new ways. He's really funny and a good guy.
Although I didn't get good grade in his class...but he is really nice teacher..only 4 essays plus midterm and final in class essay...I like his teaching style
Professor Evans was great. He's fair but tough!! If you're not inclined toward British Literatrue i wouldn't take his course. I wasn't super interested in the subject but still enjoyed him, and even though I got a 'C', I'd give him two thumbs up anyway.
not very interesting assignments, boring class but fairly easy
Really hard class, but very helpful.
Impossible to get an A. He talks about superman and Batman and doesn't tell you what he wants. Expects people with a master's degree to get an A
Mr.Evans is such a sweetheart! He grades really hard but if you impress him with your first one or two essays he will help you more on your last two.Participate in class! you won't get an A but it will help keep your B because this class is hard to get a good grade in! he trys so cut him some slack!
interesting class. if you participate a lot, have funny anecdotal intros in your essays, and do the rewrite you'll do well
Quintessential, intelligent, liberal-commie, of an English teacher. Has a penchant for Shakespeare . . .duh. I think that the only person who ever got an A in this class was Al Franken. ELF POWER!!!
One of the most insightful and thought provoking classes I've ever had the pleasure of taking. Chris will encourage you to look deeper into literature to find hidden jewels of meaning and application. He grades fairly and objectively - and expresses a sincere desire to help every student become a better writer and thinker.
very good instructor.he is very interested in what his students wish to say about the readings he assigns,so be prepared.he often lectures if the students don't speak up, so be prepared for that as well.would recommend him for the 100 level courses, once you get into brit lit with the man, hang on.definately one of the best english lit instructors.
Very entertaining and fun teacher. He is very knowlegdable in British history and you can tell he loves it. Very fun class. Expect group work if no one speak up though, he likes to hear peoples opinions. Be also prepared for a bunch of interesting stories about his trips to England. Great teacher! Very nice and helpful!
Impossible to get an A unless you are a professional writer. No matter how much work you put into an essay a B- is the highest you can get.Very good teacher but refuses to give A's.
Chris Evans is awesome. He really knows how to "stir the pot" by asking our opinions as students and he never, ever makes you feel like an idiot, no matter how left field you may be in your political leaning. He is so radical. I loved his Edward Abbey section of the class and he is teaching an even more radical environmental terrorism class now!!
Incredibly fun class (easy too if you take time to respond thoughfully to essays) I'm going on my 3rd semester with this English teacher (Got an A last 2 semesters, "Impossible"? I THINK NOT!). Those who have a colorful vocabulary and are able to describe in detail will find the class easy as well (He loves reading things that are new or different)
Evans is a great guy. The class was fun, not hard at all really. A lot of interaction...he gets discussions going. We even watched "The Birds" in 100. He's really into writing and teaching. He wants you to do well.
Great teacher! Very helpful and understanding and very good at reaching the whole class!
he is a living example of what an excellent teacher is. he has inspired me to teach and have i hope to have his passion for literature like he does. i took 2 english courses with him as well, and he is the best.
I'm a math major and I took his class after Karen Felts (another fantastic teacher) recommended him to me. Every assignment is interesting and he changes his themes every semester. I had him during the Bush/Kerry election, so we did a lot of stuff about politics. Extremely intelligent, fair, awesome southern accent. He grades tough, but I got an A in the class, despite how difficult others may have thought it was. I enjoyed myself, so maybe thats why I did well. Never liked English much, he changed that.
evans is easy... the only thing you have to do is go beyond the text and just sort of sit with the majesty of some of these great pieces of literary work. evans is very perceptive; if he can tell that this work opened up something for you then you will do well. derrr.
Evans is the best! British Literature was not my favorite type of literature but he made everything so interesting. I have his class this semester and would love to take another class taught by him!
Chris stands out as one of the most thought provoking, enthusiastic, and helpful professors I've encountered at OCC. I've taken two of his classes, and the discussions were awesome. He is very fair, which opens up the discussion forum to a free marketplace of ideas, where everyone is allowed to be heard. In addition, he's always willing to offer advice to anyone seeking it. Chris embodies the characteristics of the ideal professor.
Chris is an amazing teacher, definitely one the best I've ever had. He's so enthusiastic about the subjects he's teaching and sharing knowledge. I've recommended him to many people and am taking another of his classes next semester. The class IS fast paced and not easy, but is so worthwhile and interesting.
he sucks!
Outstanding university level professor! Constantly engages the class in meaningful and contreversial topics. Will actually make you think! Not an easy class and a very hard grader. Expect to do alot of writing and reading. Highly recommended for those of you that want to be challenged.
Chris is the best teacher I have ever had. He's funny, helpful, and makes any topic interesting. I've recommended him to a ton of people. I don't know what he's doing at OCC since he could definitely do well at a Cal State school or a University.
Very fair teacher, do the amount of work to get the grade you want. Fun and engaging, always willing to help and give advice. He's Great!
Prof. Evans is one of the few gems I have encountered at OCC. He genuinely cares about his students and his passion is infectious. In a sea of uninspired, tired fossils, P. Evans stands out. His energy, humanity, and intellectual curiosity kept me thoroughly engaged. Expect to work. Definitely University material, not to mention sweet as pie.
He was horrible! i hated his class.. it was boring and hes a very hard grader so if you arent shakespear then you should probably take someone else. Ew!
he is the best teacher ever. he is not only a superb proffessor but he is also a great person. he is the most understanding and caring teacher i have ever encountered. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Listen to me! He is a REALLLy good teacher who helps you with everything! He even lets you rewrite essays for a better grade. He's really fun and interesting. Bad part is he is very harsh at grading. Very. Rarely does he give A's.
One of the best professors bar none. Extremely articulate and passionate about what is covered in his class. Can be a tough grader, but is well worth the experience. I recommend him to many other students and will be taking another class of his this semester.
for an honors class, not as hard as i thought it would be. i'm a slacker and received a high B in the class...altho my grades should've given me an A...but he lets u rewrite essays, he collects easy assignments, not much hw, big project at the end, along with an essay. they're both group...we received A's on both..and GREAT person! high recommende
I loved this class. The class is children's literature, so I don't think it's like other english classes. There is a lot of reading, but it's all children's books and so much fun. The hardest part of this class is the essays, but he is always there to help, and he doesn't grade super hard. And he is the nicest guy.
Great teacher
Mr. Evans is hands down the best teacher I've ever had. He is so passionate about his teaching and it really shows. Barely any hmwk, 2 in-class essays, and you get to re-do 4 of the 5 essays. He is very helpful, a truly intelligent person who knows what he's doing. Gets the entire class involved in discussions. Hard class, very rewarding though.
Tied with my English teacher from 9th grade for best teacher of all time. You will not regret this class. Very, very helpful and entertaining. You will learn a lot because he makes potentially boring subject matter tolerable if not funny. It is possible to get an A since he allows rewrites on essays (thank jesus). Leans to the left politically.
Best teacher ever! He encourages discussion and debate on issues. I am very conservative and wrote my papers accordingly and I felt that his grading was extremely fair. He allows you to rewrite your papers and he will even read your paper and give recomendations before they are due. This was also the most fun class and the most fulfilling.
Great instructions and great examples
GREAT TEACHER.... a little difficult on the grading...but you get to redo 4 of the 5 essays....so no worries there....he REALLY cares and gets people involed...FUN class..HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Mr. Evans is easily one of the best teachers at OCC. He is articulate, well-read, thought provoking, energetic, and helpful. You want to go to his class and you feel as though you take something away with you when you leave. Does an excellent job preparing you for assignments, and he wants you to succeed. Very high recommendation.
Evans is a great lecturer but don't let that fool you. He is a tyrant when it comes to your writing. This was the most miserable English class I have ever taken. English was my major, but he made it so unpleasant that I changed my major. I left his class never wanting to write again. Most stressful semester imaginable because of him.
Super nice guy! He explains things in great detail so you are never confused on what to write. He likes you to be very creative and descriptive in your writing. I got As on all of my essays, and I don't feel as if I tried that hard. He loves it if you site your sources, but isn't a stickler about it until the end. I'd take him again. Only 4 essays!
Enjoys teaching. Wants to help students reach potential. He's a good teacher because he's HARD, but grading's fair. By doing the work, you learn. Essays abit challenging, he always wants ideas to be expanded. Use his office hrs. If your knowledge of english isn't great, take diff teacher. Got B in his BritLit and A in Eng100.
Excellent teacher. He makes you work hard, but he teaches you a lot. He oviously loves teaching and is always there to help you when you need it. He definately wants his students to suceed. If you make an effort you can do well in his class and learn a lot. Take this teacher if you want to push your limits in writing and improve. His class was fun.
evans is a good teacher. He is a hard, but fair grader. He expects you to work. missed points can be made up buy re-writes . He corrects essays thoroughly and writes comments, etc for improvement. I really liked him, even though I had to work hard, Not a lot of busy work, only 4 essays and thats it.
Chris was a great teacher for the child lit class. The only text you need was childrens books. You read the assigned chapters and discuss it in class the next day and answer a few questions about the book and your done. The midterm and final were easy if you read the books. And the final project is really easy too, analize a childrens picture book!
I am not a english fan by any means... Evans made this class so fun for me. I recommend this class to anyone taking english. He is a hard grade but what you get out of this class is more than just a grade :)
Best english teacher i have ever had. i took him for 100, and came back to him for 101. Funny, sweet, and lets you re-write EVERY PAPER. Papers are interseting topics (no stupid research crap) and he is somewhat leaneant on quizzes and late work. TAKE THIS MAN! you will not regret it.
Chris is a great person and teacher and I highly recommend him. This class was extremely interesting and made me really appreciate Shakespeare. If the class is still mixed non-honors/honors, DO NOT take the honors section, as all that is different is an impossibly demanding workload(not his choice)-- however, he is very helpful.
chris was an ok eng teacher, and i think he expects too much from everyone. lots of group work and discussions. practically all of ur grade is based on 4 essays you write which he grades strictly but lets you rewrite them for a better grade. overall, i've heard of better 102 classes out there to take instead of this one
I learned so much from this class. I walked away from this class a better writer. He pushes his students to succeed. He makes you think, and makes you work hard. He gives you every opportunity to learn and improve. Take the opportunities he gives you, like rewriting your essays, I worked hard, but ended up with an A. I enjoyed this class.
He's very intelligent amongst professors at occ, and I was pleased to be in his class. Lectures were engaging and intense; assignments were thought provoking. Made great improvements to my writing skills. At times, I was intimidated by his highly demanding workload. Yet, he's very approachable and suits the profession. Sweet n generous human being.
Super-friendly and down to earth guy. Typically 2 short story reading assignments per class, and thankfully the stories are FASCINATING! Quizzes (10 points) that are easy to get 100% if you read the stories. 4 essays plus in-class essay midterm & final. He pushed my writing abilities farther than I was expecting. Definitely my favorite professor!
Extremely nice, very helpful. Will stay after class to help students. Easy A if you do all your work and take advantage of rewrites. Highly recommended.
I took Mr. Evans over summer and I got a D in the class, so this is coming from someone who slacked off for personal reasons. But everytime I did show up I absolutely loved his class because he just lights up a room and he's extremely patient and FAIR! So you do the work and you put the effort in, you do great! But if you try to skate by you don't
I took Mr. Evans over summer and I got a D in the class, so this is coming from someone who slacked off for personal reasons. But everytime I did show up I absolutely loved his class he's fun and patient and FAIR! if you try to skate by you don't do so well. It sucks that I have to take the class again but if it's with Mr Evans, totally worth it!
Chris is one of the best professors I've ever taken. His class is hard and the work is demanding, but he made it so much fun and interesting. I also became a better writer/critical thinker thanks to him and pushed myself until I got my A. Even though the class was difficult, I wouldn't trade him for any other easy professors.
I took the class during the summer and it consisted of: 3 essays (2 can be rewritten for a new grade; 200pts each), 3 in-class essays (2 midterms and 1 final; 100pts each), and a quiz in every class (short answers). The class is difficult, but well worth all the hard work I put into it. Chris is the best professor I've had thus far. He's inspiring!
Evans is a great teacher..Night class stink after a long day at work but he keeps you interested the whole time. He really cares about your success in his class however he is a HARD grader. Best english teacher:) Nicest guy, very understanding..love him
Always keeps class interesting. Great professor - knows his stuff. If you show him you're trying hard and ask questions in class - you'll do well, but you have to put in the work also. I highly recommend any class with him. Loved his Shakespeare class as well.
Such an awesome guy. He really puts in the effort to help everyone understand and is always open for questions. He isn't teaching 101 next semester, but if he was, I would definitely take his class again.
He is such a helpful teacher. His topics for writing are really cool. he has a cute and dorky way of engaging you into the class. he has really good funny stories and examples. i recommend you take him.
I enjoy coming to his class and listening to his lectures. He's not boring at all and makes discussions fun and interesting. He's a hard grader, but it pays off cause you get 3 re-writes! He's smart, dorky, passionate and enthusiastic.
hes adorable! i loved him, he actually made me want to come to class. essays are relatively easy, no crazy research needed. hes seriously amazing, i wish i still needed english so i could take him. love love loved him.
One of the most passionate English teachers you'll ever meet. If you love literature I highly recommend DO NOT take if you slack off or are a texter-talker-sleeper you will not pass and ruin the experience for everyone else and they will hate you for it GO ADD HIM NOW!
One of the best English teachers I've ever had. He is a very strict grader, but if you write the papers and do the assigned reading you will do well in class. If you are struggling, don't be afraid to ask questions! He's very helpful and so passionate about your success like someone else said. I'm taking him next semester as well.
Chris is a bit of an English nerd and has no fear in showing it. His passion for his subject matter carries the class through boring periods. He gives a lot of history so textual discussion is limited to about half of the class time. You MUST do the reading to pass the quizzes but the creative assignments and exams are fair if not easy.
Great teacher. He explains everything very clearly about what he wants. Extremely nice and understanding. You have to read the books he tells you to. The tests aren't hard unless you didn't read. He lets you do over essays if you did not do well on them. Take him! He will make you a better writer!
Not bad, lots of reading, but the stories are alittle odd. You discuss them alot which can be fun but then you have to read!!so dont take if u wont read other wise you will fail. Quiz's ok if u read and hes not to hard with grading but he is critical, so dont wait until the last minute to do the papers.
quiz every single class. Tests are long and hard. Essay due EVERY CLASS. discussions are dull because evans talks the entire time and doesnt listen to anyones opinion. If you want an A....dont take this class.
He's really into English and does have a lot of lively discussions with us about stories we read that we do in groups. Participation is required, does give 3 essay exams that u can't prepare for. Readings were overall ok, not that great. Ended up dropping it cuz is pretty demanding. Reading quizzes are easy as long as you read the required stories.
i took the summer 101 course & couldnt wait to attend class each week! there are 3 papers & 3 in class essays that he grades pretty hard but gives you the option to re-write & correct your take home essays for a better grade! overall a wonderful professor and an amazing guy! he was always available to help & wants to see every student succeed!
Also had for English 101, and now have him for 161. Christopher Evans is the most amazing teacher I have ever had my entire school career. He is passionate beyond belief, funny, smart, a major word nerd, and is willing to help anyone who needs it, even after they finish his class. Chris rocks!
Best teacher I ever had
Great teacher! Always available to help and allows re-writes on papers. I was highly impressed with his selection of literature, not the a-typical choices. The Road by Cormac McCarthy was assigned for the final paper. That?s not a booked I would normally read on my own but am glad it was assigned because McCarthy is an amazing author.
he's a really nice guy and really enjoys his job. he grades his essays kind of hard, but offers help and the option of re-writing one paper. If you're looking for an easy A, do not take this class.
If your looking for an Easy A this is not the class for you. However if your looking to improve your writing then your should consider taking his class. He is very fair with grades and allows to to rewrite two papers. He is a tough grader however. He genuinely cares about all his students and loves what he does and it shows. :)
He's pretty funny, but if you want an easy A this is not your class. This is because he grades hard on your papers, but the reading quizzes are easy if you read. He's nice and very understanding. He's not mean just expects a lot from your papers. If you want to learn then take this class. Class is easy too you just analyze one of the stories read.
Also had for 4 lit classes. Take someone else for English A100. If you are not a good writer you will not get better in his class, he spends all the time on expanding your writing but never using the time/textbook to show you how. Anything else with him is amazing though, and I recommend them because you will learn a LOT about analyzing literature.
Great teacher for English 100. Really helps with writing and has workshops with groups of students which helps a ton! Also took him for a Lit. class and he was awesome! If you can handle a lot of reading take him for a Lit. class, he gives really great reading material. My favorite teacher at OCC by far!
a lot of group works which can be helpful for people who enjoy writing, but not for someone who are not comfortable showing your paper to your classmates. you'll be left alone if you're not socially easygoing
Cool guy, fun class. I did the hot thing for fun cuz he has a beard. His childrens lit class is fun and he really brings it to life. I'd reccomend him to anyone who values their education.
Terrible. He embarrasses his students in front of everyone.
He expects a lot out of his students. He is a tough grader on essays. but he gives you rewrites. class discussions can be long and boring. Read all the assigned work because he gives quizzes on them every class.
Chris Evans was by far the best english teacher I've ever had. He is enthusiastic and really cares about his students. His discussions are very interesting, and the material you're required to read is great, I never complained once about having to read for this class. Definitely take him!
His lecture is very informative and interesting. You can tell he enjoys his work, his students and life in general. He does expect good writing for a good grade. He seemed pretty available if any help was needed.
An excellent teacher that any Lit major should take. Takes great joy from teaching literature, especially Shakespeare, and appreciates what his students have to say. As many of the prior comments indicate, this is not the class to take for an easy A. Expect a rather difficult but satisfying course in which you will learn a lot.
class discussions were enjoyable. i never had to stay the full class time before. he is a hard grader but you do get to rewrite every essay for a better grade.
Great teacher. He has a great sense of humor and keeps class interesting. He grades hard on papers though but always offers the opportunity for rewrites. The books he chooses to feature in class are a bit on the dull side but essay prompts are lively and thought provoking. Plan to take future classes with him.
I hated English before taking this class. Professor Evans is so awesome and helpful. He will help you to succeed in his class. I loved this class and looked forward to it. I love how he uses personal experiences to relate to the class, it definitely connected the material.. I recommend Chris Evans to anybody, if you hate English you will begin to love it in this class. He grades fair.. You get the grade you deserve .I'm looking forward to take him for 101. Chris Evans is my favorite prof at occ.
Hard grader, bad teacher. Offers rewrites, but only gets ONE paper back to you. How are you supposed to know what you got wrong? At the end of the year, gives you one day to rewrite the paper and return it to him.
Took Prof Evans for Engl 101. Great teacher and uses a good sense of humor to keep the class interesting. Doesn't just lecture the whole time but keeps the class in discussion. If you just keep up with the work and do the assignments on time, the class is a breeze.
Chris is very enthusiastic about his subject and takes a genuine interest in every student. All he asks of students in class thoughtful participation.
His insights can be intimidating. All I know is he knows a B effort when he sees it. He wants to see progress, but that's what your there for right?
Amazing!
Very passionate about his class. He spends 30 minutes grading each paper by each student. I genuinely enjoyed my time with this person and am glad I took his class.
He as great insights and nurtures discussion well; assigns not too much writing, but quality is important; and is incredibly helpful for essay help during office hours. Great mentor for English majors!
I've taken Chris a couple times and let's just say he is the greatest professor I have ever had! He is extremely helpful, approachable, and caring. He doesn't hand out A's like candy, but if you really want to learn to write and get a B, take him!!
This is the second class I've taken with this professor and I have to say, it probably won't be the last. He is passionate about the subject matter and it shows with each class. Enlightening and thought-provoking class discussions as well as essay prompts are something to look forward to. I highly recommend this guy!
Love him! Great personality, makes class fun. You read 4 textbooks- write 4 essays. You have a midterm & final. Gives a 10 question reading quiz every class on the reading he assigns. He is a tough grader on essays but writes all over your paper on what he liked, didn't like, and what to improve. He is VERY helpful and offers rewrites!
I'm not a big English fan. In fact, I've been putting off this class for a couple of years, but Mr. Evans is an AMAZING English Teacher. He is very engaging, witty and overall interesting to listen to. I am VERY happy that I am taking his class. I got a good grade on my first paper that I rushed.
The work load is rediculous. Even though he is passionate about english, he is an Extremely hard grader. Doesnt manage time very well. I spend more time reading/writing in this class than I spend in any other subject, and still barely have a B. This is NOT an easy class, you work extremely hard- getting an A from him is nearly impossible
Super fun teacher. Gets really involved. Does grade on mostly essays.
Some say he's a hard grader, but his goal is to push you to your full potential. He's a super friendly & helpful guy, one of the best English teachers on campus! There's 5 essays, & you get to rewrite 3. Essay prompts can be difficult, but they push you to think about the argument you want to make. This class definitely made me a stronger writer.
Best teacher I have ever had. He is so passionate about his job and really invests time into all of his students. Every class is engaging and interesting, and this is coming from a bio major. I HIGHLY recommend him as a teacher. You won't regret it!
I started slow but after realizing that I had to work my butt off in order to get a good grade in this class, I put in the time. I love English so it was a really enjoyable class for me. I loved the class discussions, and the books weren't so bad either as long as you did the assigned readings when they are assigned. My writing definitely improved!
Passionate teacher but EXTREMELY hard grader. Very heavy work load, expect to put most of your time into this class. I would definitely not recommend him if you're looking for an easy english class.
I was really afraid of this class for a long time as I did struggled with freshmen composition. Mr. Evans is one of my favorite teachers. He makes you think and really fosters a positive learning experience. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!
Wishing there was a cute button instead of hot. took him for Shakespeare and worked my butt off for my grade. Really liked him, thought he was kinda "quirky". No one, no one got 100% on anything. Don't slack off cus' the guy's a harsh grader. Other than that, really cool and loved him. TY CHRIS!
WONDERFUL teacher. He takes time helping students and giving feedback on essays. Allows you to rewrite majority of the essays you turn in. Keeps class interesting and highly interactive. Would recommend this class to anyone in search for a pleasant learning and growing experience in writing.
I love this guy. he's the reason I'm passing all my class and getting accepted into all the colleges I applied to. TAKE EVANS.. BEST TEACHER AT OCC BY FAR.
He is an extremely insightful teacher who is very passionate about educating! His lectures are very engaging and intellectually stimulating. However, he is very critical on course writing assignments; he expects college-level writing. So, if you don't slack, your writing ability will surely benefit from taking his class.
Chris is my all time fav professor. I had a hard time understanding Shakespeare's work initially. Chris took his time and really broke it down in a way that I could relate to the material. This was my second class of his that I took and I became a better writer because of his guidance and instructing abilities. Thanks Chris you are the man!
This professor is a great English teacher. He displays a lot of passion and enthusiasm in the classroom. He expects a certain amount of participation and insightful thinking. He grades at a college level criteria so don't take his class if you can't write well. He is extremely helpful in all aspects of writing.
AMAZING TEACHER! I came into the class with not so good writing skills and I have seen a tremendous amount of difference now to when I first started. He gives you time to write your essays and even gives you tips on how to fix your paper before you turn it in. He had some very interesting topics for this semester! TAKE HIM YOU WONT REGRET IT!
I have taken a total of 3 classes with Prof. Evans and even though I am an econ/math major his classes has been the most interesting. This children's lit class was a fascinating and he really makes you think outside the box. He is the best professor I have had at OCC. Take his classes, you will not be disappointed.
Sure, he is really bubbly &class discussions are interesting but I was extremely disappointed in this class. I put every effort I had into it,even had tutors proofread my essays help me improve my writing, went to almost every class, turned in every assign &still got a C. He only really talked to 5 students. In my opinion, he 100% favors students
I took the Shakespeare course and the Eng100 and I got A's in both of them. It's not the easiest thing to get an A but it is a no-brainer to get a B in his class. He's gives you lots of details and corrections on your essay but as long as you get all the points needed from the prompt, its a B. Zombie essay was interesting to write :).
Chris is the best English teacher I've ever had. If you love discussion based classes, interesting material, and a caring professor, he's your guy. It's not an EASY A, but I have taken 2 of his classes and gotten A's each time. His class is a rewarding experience and you WILL become a better writer. I highly recommend his classes.
Take Chris. No question. Take him! Class is so entertaining, he's hilarious, extremely intelligent and assigns interesting texts. Tough class but UTILIZE his office hours. It amazes me how many students do not take advantage of english teacher's office hours. Turn in ALL revisions too! Honestly I'm so bummed I can't take another one of his classes.
Great teacher who arrives to class with a smile and is excited to start class discussions. In this class it's very important to do your homework and actually read the novels- all class discussions, quizzes and essays are based on the readings. I participated every single day and I believe that's how I received and A. Fun class, but difficult!
10/10 would take again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. He is just GOOD. Arrives on time, always happy, smiling, AND IS ACTUALLY EXITED TO TEACH AND DISCUSS THE BOOKS. He also made me an atheist, meaning, my critical skills skyrocket .-.
Chris was a great teacher. He is passionate about the subject and genuinely cares about his students. My one complaint is that he fails to upload any grades to blackboard and he is sometimes wishy-washy when it comes to giving assignments. All in all, he is a thoughtful teacher and likes to get the whole class involved in discussion. Take him.
I LOVED this man. Favorite teacher at OCC hands down. Hes so down to earth, approachable, and the discussions in class are fun to follow. His partial southern accent adds to his sweetness. I definitely loved his personality, made him very fun to take and learn from. Take him!!!
This is the first class I have ever taken at Orange Coast College, where I was able to work my ass for a grade and take it with me in life. Chris Evans is a phenomenal teacher, you indeed have to WORK FOR YOUR GRADE, but he is very understanding and patient for those who make it known that they care. Absolutely brilliant at his job! RECOMMENDED!!!!
Such a fun class! I recommended it to all my friends because he is a great teacher! He gives lots of feedback, lets you revise essays, inspires writing with good ideas, and doesn't spend a lot time on grammar (he assigns a book to read). Great class if you like to work for your grade and make an effort! I will definitely take a class of his again!
I know everyone say's this, but Chris truly is the best English teacher I've ever had. If you're afraid to take him because you think he'll be too hard, try and reconsider. He is such a great guy and gives numerous opportunities to pass his class. As long as you do your work and actually plan out your essays, you'll be fine.
LOVED his class. Professor Evans is a wonderful instructor with a passion for literature. I became a better writer and actually learned to enjoy the subject of English thanks to him. Lots and lots of reading and by far the hardest class I've ever taken, but it was totally worth it. Utilize his office hours, he is very helpful!
I really enjoyed his class. One of my favorite professors at OCC. He cares about his students and actually tries to make the class enjoyable. He prepares you well for the papers and gives good, detailed feedback. I was dreading English, but he made me actually want to go to class.
He is an amazing professor who expects good work. Participation is encouraged. He really brings cohesion to the students and helps facilitate group work.
Not what I would expect from an upper division English course. Gave midterm before we received any other grades, really ridiculous projects that don't help understand the texts, "group discussion" which involves him lecturing the entire class. Horrible at writing essay prompts.
Classes fly by, he is very engaging, funny, thought provoking, and above all legitimately loves and cares about his subject and students. 10/10 would take again
Wow! Great teacher! He really cares about you thinking and going beyond the ordinary. Many may judge expecting boring but everything he does has a purpose in teaching. Very tough grader but is ALWAYS there for exact help if you ask. quizzes all the time. A lot of reading and the essay topics put your brain to work. Simply one of the best at OCC.
A great instructor; entertaining, engaging, and most importantly, he cares about his students. That being said, put forth the effort and he'll reciprocate. There's a lot of reading to keep up with, quizzes at the beginning of each class period, and several papers. However he is flexible and very approachable. Wish I had a reason to take again
He's the best English teacher I've ever had. It's hard but he's so helpful I learned a lot. Would take again!!
Great teacher although his class is a lot of work. He's funny and never makes the class boring, but he gives tons of writing assignments and quizzes after almost every reading. He gives really good feedback on papers and is very lenient on them as well. Not hard to pass the class, just requires a lot of handwork and dedication.
Chris Evans is one of my favorite teachers of all time. He's the best english teacher at occ and seriously visit him at office hours!! he is so helpful and so encouraging and really wants to help you succeed. He is the sweetest, genuinely cares about his job and his teaching style is amazing. He is the best take him you will have no regrets promise
He is a tough grader, not an easy A. If you get a bad grade on the first paper, don't be discouraged. Do the revision and you should be fine. Also, you need to work hard for it.
I am not good at writing essay, but I learnt a lot from the class. He is a VERY TOUGH ESSAY GRADER. However, if you do everything he asks you to, you will have an easy time. You can revise 2 papers (provided you do the peer review) so definitely do that. And he really emphasizes on Plagiarism. If you ever thought about it, don't. Just don't.
Professor Evans made me remember why i used to love writing! He is such an inspiration, super kind, and incredibly funny! Goes off on tangents every now and then, which are super funny stories. Hard grader on essays but gives back AMAZING notes on your essays! Quizzes you on the (fun) readings and his essay topics are super interesting! LOVE him!
Im going to make this simple, Mr. Evans is a delightful human being and you should take his class.
He really helped me with my writing and finding my view when writing, HOWEVER he assigns an astronomical amount of reading and homework and squeezes many essays in. If you miss class, you fail. He also makes the class too personal making all the assignments about his favorite movies and directors which makes it feel biased and like you can't write.
I really enjoyed his class and the literature he had us read and write about. Yes, he is kind of a tough grader, but he wants you to do your best and does give you the chance to revise at least one essay. He would also give quizzes, but if you keep up with the readings you should be fine. I really liked his class and the discussions we'd all have!
The best English teacher I ever had. He helps you become a better writer and motivates you to do well. There was nothing too extreme about his class, as long as you do the work and try your best, youll pass
Worst professor I have ever seen in my entire life. He often use bad words in the class. We all are adult but professor sould not use those words in class. He always says that he has been teaching english for long time, but I didn't learn anything in his class. I am so surprised see all good ratings he has. It is absolutely wrong.
Very unorganized teacher ever. He place all paper together (more then hundred) and tell us to find our paper. He is not fair, he doesn't post grade on blackboard, and he doesn't give feedback frequently. Don't take his class unless you want to just waste of time.
I love Mr. Evans! He's super nice and definitely helps you with your writing. Genuinely seems like he cares about what you have to say. Participate during class! His assignments are really unique, and he makes you work for your grade (he's a tough grader, but it's reasonable)
Awesome, straight out. Take his class, he will grab ahold of your attention throughout lecture and make anyone who hates writing actually not dread coming to class.
This class was a lot of work but I left feeling better about my writing and more interested in writing than I was when I first came to the class. Professor Evans is a tough grader but be prepared for amazing feedback and chances to rewrite all your essays
Wonderful professor! Class discussions are always interesting and full of personal anecdotes that help students better understand the assignments at hand. Evans is great and his English 100 class was a fantastic way to start off at OCC. However, as the semester goes on, instructions for his assignments get vaguer and vaguer.
Professor Evans sets the bar high for other college professors. His lectures include a good balance of humor and thought-provoking discussion. The man genuinely cares for his students and his enthusiasm is contagious. If you do your part and put in some effort, show up to class, and love learning, you'll love Professor Evans.
If you're only looking at the good reviews, it is not 100% true of what they say about Evans. Evans is a hard grader, and he's careless when grading papers. Every time he grades essays, He will usually say that he was in a bad mood in grading them and he is very messy when giving them back. He has a strange side to him when grading papers. AVOID!
I hate English and Prof Evans made it interesting. He's a GREAT professor and I LOVED attending. For those with a stick up their bum WARNING he may curse 2x a week. Grow up we're adults! We whine about professors expecting too much and we forget they're not robots. Evans makes you work for your grade and as an instructor he works hard for us too!
Evans is the best. Hes old school. He makes his classes fun and filled with lots of critical thinking. The books he chooses are awesome. Take his class. It is somewhat challenging but he truly makes you a better writer.
Chris Evans is the hardest English professor I have ever taken. English 101 wasnt even that hard. Evans was very great at explaining what was wrong with your paper but expects too much for an English 100 class. At least thats how I saw it.
Please take him! He made me such a great writer, and this guy seriously cares about his students. Being a student athlete, he really helped me out with deadlines. I went to his office hours all the time, and he gave me great feedback so I could nail his essays. Had to work for my grade, but he bumped me to an A at the end. Gives some hw, I LOVE HIM
Do the reading hw, there's a pop quiz the next class. Run your paper ideas by him and he'll help you get the grade you want. Lots of in class participation but he makes it fun (small groups, etc). He's good at re-explaining concepts if you don't understand them. Allows you to do essay revisions for a better grade.
Great all-around professor. Took him for English 102. Was a great guy and recommend anyonewho wants to take English 102 do it with him. If you read the required texts, you'll easily get an A in this class. The questions on the quizzes arent hard, and he just wants to make sure you read them. Amazing teacher and highly recommend. - Hayden F.
CHRIS EVENS!!!! I've been at OCC now for a year and this has been one of my favorite teachers I have ever had in my years of going to school. He's super fun in class, talks a lot and tells stories of interesting things that connect with what we are doing. Highly recommend him for English. Does activities, shows videos and is an amazing guy! 20/10.
Evans is such an amazing professor! His knowledge on literature is unmatched. He is the best English professor Ive had in the last 2 years at OCC. Hes honest, fair, understanding, and reasonable. Dont expect him to be an easy professor though! Hell make you work for your grade, but youll enjoy the process and the pay off in the end.
Simply the best English teacher. Chris Evans is the reason why I decided to change my major to English. He gives good feedbacks, points out errors that you can't see so that you can improve your writing skill, super funny in class and come to his office for any question, advice, or just even a chat. Hard grader for sure, but the reward is worth it
This professor is incredible! His knowledge of literature is astounding. His attitude and his discussion style class makes you truly enjoy being there even if it does get challenging at times. You will read a lot and learn a lot. He goes above and beyond for his students. Definitely take him if you know you're willing to work for your grade.
Professor Evans has become one of my favorite English teachers! He is very charismatic and loves to talk in depth about the context of the book you're reading but also is very animated in the way he teaches. Just participate in class and don't be afraid to speak about your opinions on the readings no matter what you think!
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He's not a 1 star however. He's an okay teacher.(it gets boring) He grades essays with the most insane god complex teacher mindset. He nitpicks and grades extremely unreasonably. Average grades are C's. I'm a A/B average student. If you want to become a C student, take him. You won't feel accomplished writing essays for him though
Chris Evans is by far the best English teacher/Professor I've ever had so far. However, he is a tough grader. If you do not write the way he likes it or the way he wants you to, you will not receive a poor grade on your essays. And everything is cliche to him so DO NOT use cliches in you essays. He definitely does care for his students though.
Professor Evans is a fantastic instructor. He isnt the easiest grader, but thats the point of college. He gives you the tools to succeed and is available to help in any way he can. I love to write and that could be why I had success with this class. Even if writing isnt your strong suit, Professor Evans will what he can to help you.
Evans is approachable, and he teaches a real class. I definitely felt like I had to work for my A, and that made it more satisfying. I think the only bad reviews of him are from people who just aren't very good at English.
One of the best English teachers at OCC. He really cares about every student and wants them to succeed. Little bit of a tough grader, but he gives you opportunities to revision your essays. He calls on people at times, but it's not because he wants to pick on you to make you feel bad. If you have the chance to take him, do it
I took Children's Literature with Professor Evans last semester and I enjoyed it so much! There is a lot of reading, but it isn't anything I couldn't handle (and I hate reading). His lectures were super engaging and his humor is the absolute best! He is super thoughtful, caring, and I would definitely take his class again!
I didn't do well in his class but I can recognize that that's completely my fault for time mismanagement. Professor Evans was such a nice cool guy and the lectures were always so lively and fun. He always engages well with the class even online with lots of banter. It's not hard to do well as long as you do your work and show up to class.
Was my first semester at OCC and one of my first online classes. He was super caring and understanding. He didn't give us a lot of homework and the readings were separated and short. When doing essays, he gives us time to get feedback and his feedback is incredibly helpful. Honestly, not a fan of English, but he made it fun and easy!
This was my first semester in college, and I was so thankful to have Chris Evans as my only professor in person. He is an awesome guy and a wonderful professor. I highly recommend to take him for any English class he has available. Very understanding, gives amazing feedback, always available to answer questions and just a great person!
Professor Evans is one of my favorite instructors of all time. Going to class is never a chore with his lively banter and engaging lectures. This class was truly the highlight of my semester. Essay directions/rubrics are very clear and easy to follow and he's a forgiving grader. Participate!! Will DEFINITELY be taking other classes with him again!
Prof Evans is so amazing. He told me my thesis on the Pythagorean theorem was a masterpiece. Better than Prof Edward Cullen (Ph.D.)
Evans is a good teacher, an entertaining guy and a character. Required to read four books with a quiz every class on each chapter. After the book is finished you write a paper analyzing an english device used in the book. Papers count for most of your grade, books are a must read and attendance required. Be a good paper writer or you won't pass!
Mr. Evans is the best English teacher I've had in my academic career. He is engaging and has a big personality, which is important for myself. As you can expect from a college level class, there is a fair amount of reading and several essays throughout the semester, however with a little time management, this is more than feasible.
I took 101 with Prof. Evans and loved him so much that I took Children's Lit with him last semester! Truly one of the most caring and passionate professors I have ever had. Take any of his classes, you won't regret it!
Super accessible outside of class and understanding when the class struggled with some of the readings. My biggest concern was the grade was 2 essays a final and midterm, but that's just nitpicking. As a person and a prof he seems great.
He's cool but he doesn't reply to emails. The class was fun and I'm glad I took it but he always referenced things from his other courses which confused me. Also didn't understand his feedback from the essays.
Great professor, but not an easy A class if u aren't as passionate ab the material as he is. Grades are only from quizzes from weekly readings, book exams, & essays, so don't fall behind. Be prepared to consult with him for feedback if u want to try to get an A. The majority of class is just discussions, so if that's not ur thing, you'll be bored.
I HATE ENGLISH. However, Chris is amazing. His lectures are amazing and thought-provoking. There are 4 essays you have to write throughout the semester and 2 in-class papers. My advice for the essays is to go to the office hours and ask him to read your papers. He gives incredible feedback. Do this multiple times and you will get better I promise.
Grade your essay from God's perspective, if you take his class then good luck.
all around great professor, relatively easy to pass material.
One of the Best Teachers for English at OCC. I would definitely take his class again!
Evans is a dynamic professor who keeps lectures engaging. The coursework is demanding but manageable with diligence. I found unstuck study and the free textbook very helpful for study prep. Overall, a rewarding English class experience.
Prof is seriously amazing. Engagement is important, but the class environment isn't stressful if you're uncomfortable w speaking. Seems like lots of reading up front, but actually not bad to manage week to week at all. Even as someone who isn't an Engl major nor well-versed in Old Lit, I love this class - you'll get so much out of it.
He was a very sweet and understanding person, he made the class enjoyable. It was fun most of the classes. Just make sure you are paying attention in class and aren't on your phone or computer getting distracted, he'll tell you to put it away. If it happens too often he might get understandably upset. He gave a lot of time for each essay.
Honestly Professor Evans is one of those teachers that are tough as a nail, He's really passionate about what he teaches and puts in the effort for his students to stay entertained. His way of grading is pretty tough but if you put in the effort and time he will work with you. You may want to consider to go to his office hours.
Incredible Professor. Reading is an absolute must. Lectures are incredibly engaging and never drag, and Evans himself is fun and easy to talk to. He's a tough grader but will work with you and tell you exactly what you need to do to improve. Evans made this a very fun class, but don't take it lightly as falling behind is a death sentence.
Professor Evans is enthusiastic about literature! I took his night class, which was entertaining. He often made the class laugh but wasn't afraid to discuss controversial literature. He constantly reminded his students why reading mattered and welcomed many interpretations of the texts. He was sweet, and I loved talking to him about books.
Professor Evans is funny, engaging and kind:) Lectures are never boring and come with his juicy personal anecdotes. Class is discussion heavy but the prof acknowledges and values every contribution. Can be a slow grader but gives good feedback and occasional essay revisions. Overall, a super caring and passionate prof that made Eng 101 enjoyable!!
