Very monotone, but knows his material.

Great Person
great notes, great tests, great prof!
Good prof, has good notes, and does lots of examples. Somewhat monotone....
Great Prof and so nice. Excellent notes! Fun classes. Does experiments in class.

Better than most Chem profs. However, he is a bit monotone.
Poor notes, I thought
Great Prof, makes everything clear, recommend veryhighly taking again next term!
Excellent prof and very helpful.
Had him for 1050/51, best prof EVER! Recommend him to all. Tough tests though
Best chem prof ever! Very helpful and easy to approach! Strongly recommended!!

This prof rocks! Kinda looks like Austin Powers in a dry sort of way...Interesting lectures and very helpful with any difficulties. Tests were a challenge, but fair.
Best Chem Prof!! Excellent notes and the problem sets he gives help you along in the course so much!!!! Tests are hard but it just makes you work more!! Great Prof highly recommended!!!
He was supposed to be the best 1st year chem teacher. He bored me out of my mind in class. I love chemistry but couldn't take his lectures.
A great prof. Always helpful. Positive about your future grade prospects in his course evn when you do poorly on a test. Truly interested in helping you do your best. A fantastic prof!
neutral
Man, this guy knows what he's at. Not only does he provide wicked notes and great tuturials to help you learn, but he makes things interesting by doing in-class experiments. He's EXCELLENT! tests are somewhat tough, but c'mon it's chemistry.
If you're willing to put in an effort you cant go wrong with Flinn. Sometimes you might have trouble understanding WTF hes talking about or writing, but his notes are good and he covers all the bases. He's always around to explain things after class.
good man
Did not like him
Can you say monotone??? this guy will bore the tears off you if you manage to stay awake that is....but i will give him credit for the tutorials because they were out of this world.. also he is a lefty so the notes are hard to decipher...
way to boring! way to dry! stay away... (Sorry flinn)
Not very clear. I didn't like him.
Dr. Flinn is an excellent first year prof. He makes you feel right at ease, and genuinely cares about all of his students.
Dr. Flinn has changed my opinion about Chemistry. I always had a negative attitude towards the subject. He makes chemistry a joy to learn. A caring person and a great teacher!!
Dr. Flynn is a horrible teacher. His classes are very boring.. making you want to fall asleep. IT feels liek he is talking to the board. ALthough his tutorials are very useful and when he does answer your questions he gives useful answers.
confuses simple concepts
Awesome teacher, very clear and really knows what he's talking about. I would definitley recommend him
great prof, except for a little monotone... knows his stuff
Had him last winter for Chem 1051. A good prof, genuinely cares about his students, and is really helpful. Can be boring sometimes, but his notes are good, and it's not a very difficult course anyway.
Let's just say I've always had A's in Chem and loved the subject. After taking this course I'm completely turned off. Don't waste your time with tutorials or sample exams, they are nothing like the tests. Just know EVERYTHING. Do ALL the worksheets & go to the Chem Help room if you are struggling.
The students who like him did advanced chemistry in high school and know it all, the students who hate him are the ones trying to actually LEARN something. Stay away!
Good prof....gives good examples and answers ur ?'s
Monotone.... one word to describe him... puts you to sleep... doesn't teach much of anything... or anything that would be on the test anyway... gives out samples... some difference considering how his tests are completely different. Unless this is your only course... expect a rough mark
Excellent
VERY boring man. obviously loves his chemistry however does not translate this love into a decent set of notes. an A isi very unlikely. look to your lab mark to bring you up. if you do all the worksheets and actually read all the chapters you should pass. I'd advise to stay away.
Very good examples, teaches everything necessary for tests. You should read through the text because there is some stuff he doesn't have time to teach, but overall really good prof. A bit boring but he teaches everything.
Gives good notes bur read the text. Loves his chem and cares if u understand. Do all ?'s on worksheet and some text and u'll be fine. Someimes sample tests r nothing like the real tests..He loves Theory/Understanding ?'s to..not just calculation ones..But overall a good prof..way better then others
Flinn is very clear during lectures. His problem sheets are all you need to be able to do to succeed in this course.
A good prof, gives good notes, teaches what you need to know, and doesn't waste your time.
had him for 2 terms and he was **** aswome if you don't agree, your an idot who doesn't understand anything about chemistry!!!
He gives great notes, and his work sheets are great, he also is always willing to help and is really nice about it. THe only problem is he is quite boring to listen to, so if you're strictly an auditory learner, he may not be the best for you, but other than that he's good. but he doesnt put his notes online...
he's notes are good..but he's very judgemental, espicially when you go to him for help. He's try to help you, but if it's the day befor ethe exam and you ask him a simple question to clarify he can be an ass about it with comments like.."are you serious? you don't know this?"
He was extremly helpful, and even though i didn't do that well in this course he was an excellent instructor and was always willing to help.
An excellent prof, gives fair tests but you MUST study hard for them. He is always willing to answer questions; however, always make sure you have at least a 2 hour break if you decide to speak to him after class. Somehow everything relates back to organic chemistry, hmm. If you are a first year chem student, do anything to get in his class!!!
awesome, great notes. tests come from the problem sets! study them!
This course is hard for the average person. You need to study A LOT. Flinn gives out problem sets which are helpful, but time-consuming. I don't like his teaching methods. He is robotic, incoherent, and he picks favourites. Better than most profs you could get stuck with it a chem course, but for a first year course, I'd stay away, he's boring too.
Dr. Flinn is a good prof, and really cares about how students fare in his class. Unfortunately, this course just plain blows. Problem sets are time consuming and difficult, every class is 3 pages (front and back) of notes leaving no time to listen or absorb information, and the text book is very unclear. The only good part of this class is the lab.
Overall, an excellent prof. Clear and easy to understand and notes are great! Textbook is useless: don't bother to buy it. Just teach yourself from the notes and the problem sets. Tests are challenging but if you put in the work and go see him for help you can do well. The final was really good as well. Truly cares about his students.
Overall a really good prof. Classes consist purely of notes, so it's not a good idea to miss any. He's a little boring to listen to, but not too bad. If you need extra help he is super nice and more than willing to give you an hour or two. Also a VERY fair marker, very generous with part marks.
He was an amazing prof! Really cared about his students and wanted them to do well. He is very smart and if you go to see him he will help you out a lot. He gives awesome notes and is by far the best chem 1050 prof out of the bunch! I would highly recommend him. His tests are fair, and he writes the final so his classes do much better
Fantastic professor. Ready and willing to give extra help outside of class. Also had him for Chem 2300. Hard courses but he teaches it well (despite being a little dull but he knows his material).
Very boring class. Really hard to learn in class because you're always trying to write down something on top of the page while he's teaching something on the bottom of page. This is because he's left handed and covers up all the notes! Test are ridiculously hard, most people bomb them. Pretty nice fella to talk to. Always willing to help.
put it dis way, if u're in dr.Flinn's class, u'd definitely pass ur final exam. he's tests are d most difficult and will make u study hard for d finals which made me excel in d course. never misses a beat, goes thru all d chapters comprehensively. his students definitely have an advantage over other students doin d same course.
He is a pretty good prof, he gives really good notes and seems very willing to help anyone. He grades really harsh and his tests are much harder then other profs' but in the end that prepares you more for the final so it's good thing.I found this course really hard (which is why my rating is so bad)but I wouldn't do it with any other prof.
One thing needs to be said: You will ace the final exam. He makes his tests throughout the semester very, very challenging. When you go into the final, you'll find the same questions were given on the tests and you'll whiz through it. His classes aren't too bad, but they're fairly dry. An approachable man who enjoys what he teaches.
Dr. Flinn has very challenging exams but they are also fair!! Everything is covered in class so be sure to go (he is rather dull though and admits it). He is very willing to help, just go to his office. Sometimes his explanations are hard to grasps, but I think this is because he's so smart and struggles t 'dumb it down.' Great prof overall!
Dr. Flinn has to be one of the best profs I've ever had at MUN! The man is kind, cares for student progress and will do anything for you! His tests are fair and they do prepare you for the final! He's almost always available for questions and he's fun to talk to in his office!
Chris Flinn was by far the best prof I have ever had. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to understand and do well. Although it's a hard course, he makes it easy to understand and enjoyable. His gap notes helped me to stay focused during class and contained all the information and examples to do well on the exams.
He is really helpful if you have any questions. he is always in his office if you need help
Lectures are pretty dry, notes are great. He can be a little narcissistic, but ultimately knows his stuff and will answer your questions. He will take of marks for the slightest errors, so work diligently.
Very nice and helpful guy one on one, but in class he is very hard to follow, stay away if you aren't good at learning things on your own. His left hand covering the notes is EXTREMELY bothersome at times. Nice guy, not very good in the classroom though.
Dr. Flinn is a very nice man, but his personality skills versus his teaching skills are incomparable. Not only was he mind numbingly boring, his left hand covering his illegible crappy notes was unbearable. I read other comments like this on the site and didn't think he would be too bad, I was wrong. STAY AWAY.
I thought Dr. Flinn gave fantastic notes. Very clear explanations of course material. I found class to be a complete waste of time. He copied out the notes, which were all posted online anyways and he covered them with his hand most of the time, so you couldn't copy them down, even if you wanted to. He read off the notes monotonously. Very boring
Great fella out of class, but his classes are painful . Very boring, and has poor notes that are hard to follow in class. I would be grateful to never see another "gap note" again. The way he is in class and out of class are polar opposites. Pretty lenient on due dates though, very understanding, and his tests are fair but really long.
Great prof! Really wants his students to do well and is willing to help when things aren't clear. The assignments are tough and long however they really prepare you for the tests and final exam. Lecture slides are always posted online so class can be a bit tedious and note taking isn't really necessary. The course is very math heavy!
Dr. Flinn is an incredibly nice man and a very good teacher, but his lectures are boring. He uses very easy-to-study notes and the tests have no big surprises, plus bonus questions. Very understanding and helpful one-on-one! If you learn better the old fashioned way, take his class!
flinn is very dry and his lectures and notes leave much to be desired however if you go talk to him he genuinely care about all his students and is always willing to go out of his way. that being said, you will basically live in the help center for his class. very tough tests, very tough grader, very easy to fall asleep in class.
I failed the course my first time doing it, so I made sure to spend a lot of time in Dr. Flinn's office this past semester. His lectures are fairly dry, but the gap notes give all of the material that you need to know. Gave very fair exams. He is a super sweet man that loves chemistry, don't be afraid to go see him if you need help!
Dr. Flinn is a very nice man who genuinely wants his students to succeed. Has very good notes, and very fair tests with a lot of bonus marks everywhere. Assignments are a lot of work, but more than prepare you for tests. The only bad thing is he can be a little boring in class. Textbook is very unnecessary.
Lectures can be dry but he does his best to keep people engaged. A kind man who wants to help you. Good assessments.
The class is dry and certainly not the easiest thing I've taken. Dr. Flinn is very nice and cares about his students but I didn't find his lectures interesting. The notes weren't the easiest to study. The Lab reports were tricky, but I found his tests easy, and the assignments weren't bad, especially because he has a bonus one.
lectures are extremely dry and monotonous. his left hand covers everything he writes which gets extremely irritating. nicest guy in the faculty. available to help any time outside of class and wants to get to know you. exams are very predictable - the same as previous years. assignments are hard but good for final exam prep.
Dry lectures but if you follow along you'll be okay. Seems very approachable, and is a nice man. But if you struggle in boring lectures/getting distracted it might be better to go with someone else.
Although he seems to care about his students his lecture are not great and he is heavy on the homework end. Instead of participation marks like every other Chem class, his class is required to do a very lengthy excel assignment.
He's an older man and not tech-savvy at all. Lectures are extremely boring and his notes are only ok. Talks too much if you approach him outside class. You have to do this massive assignment that's worth a lot in the very beginning and it's brutal. Tests are hard. Wouldn't recommend him if you can avoid it.
Lots of good information if you can stay awake for his lectures. Although, because his beefy sausage knuckles, his writing that's worse than a Parkinson's victim, and the fact he writes with his left hand means you might as well forget trying to copy anything useful down. Just wait for him to post his notes online.
Extremely boring. Doesnt explain things well and his gap notes are no help at all. Hes a nice guy but basically useless as a prof. Also writes with his left hand which makes it difficult to copy notes. Avoid this prof if you can.
Chris Flinn is a terrible prof. Absolutely awful. He stands in front of the class and writes, he barely speaks and gives questions that are nothing like the examples given in class. Would never suggest taking his class
Flinn is an excellent prof and very kind. He explains the material well in class. If you do not understand, you are welcome to pop by his office outside of class. His tests are challenging/long but he gives many hints as to what will be on it. He also has notes, previous tests and worksheets posted that are very similar to test questions. Cheers!
terrible ! never take his class!
