Very clear, and tried to explain everything thouroughly. If you study well for the two tests, you will be fine. If you can demonstrate that you have some knowledge of the material, you'll get a decent grade.
Had a lot of fun in this class. Great prof, really helpful and great sense of humor.

If you read the essays assigned you'll do well on the tests. Found him to be somewhat judgemental, mean little comments would just pop out randomly, but overall he was a really great prof. Always willing to help. Classes were a little dull and tutorials were useless. Didn't go to a single tutorial and I aced the class.
The first I took with Framarin is what got me into philosophy in the first place. I owe a big big thank you.
He was a great guy and a great prof. He encouraged class discussion and as long as you took notes and paid attention his tests were very easy. Very approchable and helpful and I would definitely recommend taking a course with him.
This professor was so cute that it was hard to pay attention!
Nice guy. Clear teaching. Interesting enough. Carefully waded through the hot topics in Philosophy and Religion without being condescending. If you're interested in the material, he's one of the best at U of C to teach it to you.
Chris is amazing! Take this prof, he won't let you down. Very intelligent and well spoken. Enthusiastic about the material and really encourages class discussions. Superb.
Very good prof! You don't need to do the readings, just listen to what he says in lecture and you will do fine on the midterm/final. It's important to take good notes so I would recommend using a laptop
Made topics bit more interesting and even gave a list of questions for exams which he would pick out of. As long as you go to class and write good notes you are guaranteed a good grade. Awesome prof!
Chris is very intelligent and he is very passionate about philosophy. His lectures can be a bit tough to follow but the assignments are much easier than they seem. Take advantage of his office hours HE WILL TELL YOU EXACTLY HOW TO REVISE YOUR DRAFT SO THAT YOU GET AN A+! His class was pretty good and he is the most reasonable marker I've ever had!
Chris is an excellant prof and probably the most helpful prof I've had at U of C. Utilize the office hours, they are an excellant investment of your time. He's approachable and he has a great sense of humour.
Very helpful and considerate. Made the class a very enjoyable place to be!
Chris is one of the best profs I have ever had! He is so helpful and easy to get along with and talk to and will take the time to go over things with you if you don't understand. I have only taken Sanskrit with him which is a difficult language, but he made it quite enjoyable and fun! I am looking forward to taking another class with him soon!
amazing prof, although the class was hard to follow , he made it so amazing. Easy to talk to and relate with. Would def take another class with him. very patient, approachable and has a great sense of humor !
Chris was very nice and approachable, one of my favorite profs yet. I'm switching to a Religious Studies major and I hope I can get some more classes with him. Tends to be a little all over the place and sort of hard to read handwriting sometimes but thats not important. Lots of preparation for exams.
Heard class was easy so I took it to maintain my 3.9. Managed an A- by the skin of my teeth by the end. Helpful, approachable, friendly teacher. But crams a lot into each class. Gives out 20 short answer Q from which 4-5 are taken for exam. Marking becomes a curve based on what's handed in. Much harder than expected.
What a great guy. The class is definately not easy, so don't underestimate it. Work hard and keep up with the readings and you'll be fine. Chris really knows his stuff. Smart, VERY approachable, great sense of humor. Exams are fair, just put in the effort. Loved his Star Wars references. Definately recommend this prof!!
Amazing Prof. Very approachable and very accommodating to answering student's questions. This course is not easy, a lot of information is thrown at you in a short period of time. He really knows his stuff and his sense of humour makes class much easier to get through. His references to everyday things were awesome. Definitely recommend this course.
Dr. Framarin truly has a gift for teaching. In my 5 years on this campus thus far he is one of the best. All notes are in-class only. I went to class, did the readings, and studied a moderate amount and walked away with a 99%. He gives a list of 15+ questions before the midterm and final, and will ask 4-5 from this list and some MC in addition.
What else can be said? I'm sure he's converted a lot of students to philosophy or religious studies majors. HIGHLY recommend this class.
Asian Philosophy. He went through Buddhist philosophy, really interesting stuff. Provides thought provoking arguments, starts off really strong, slows down a bit at the end. Very good teacher if you are 1st or 2nd or even 3rd year phil. Even if you're not, he teaches excellent essay writing skills. You WILL become a better essay writer.
Amazing prof; highly recommended. Really goes out of his way to ensure you understand the material, and makes himself available for extra help. Take your rough essays to him-- he will read through them and give you feedback that, if followed, will allow you to get 100% =).
Amazing prof! interesting class, easy paper assignment(no in class exams for this class)
Chris is one of the best prof's out there. A very humble man who wants you to succeed. Three papers no final exam. He marks very fair, if you don't understand something go to his office hours. His TA was really good, go to the tutorials before each paper and you will get an A. Easy GPA booster.
great prof! great guy actually. Have to go to class, he tells you exactly how to write each paper. 3 easy papers, no final. ended with an A! defs recommend this guy
Mr. Framarin is the best prof ever. Literally. Take a course with him- you won't regret it! He's so passionate about what he does and his love of the subjects he teaches really shows. He's friendly, clear and very easy to understand. If you show up for class, take great notes and read the mterial, you'll do just fine.
Really nice man, very interesting ideas and easy to relate to. Pretty much tells you how to write the papers word for word, however if you don't follow the outline exactly you're likely to get docked marks. Overall an easy class, textbook was interesting but not necessary to read at all.
Best class that I have taken at U of C so far. Chris is very clear with his expectations and is very helpful. I enjoyed the way he provided context to what most profs would just outline. I don't think I went to one of his classes and didn't laugh. GREAT PROF!!!
Interesting, with a dry humor. He doesn't like it when you are late. He makes the information clear and gives sample exam questions that he will pick from for the exam. Study and you will get an A. His exams are easy. No Blackboard notes so you have to show up for class and type like mad.He is great at explaining and clarifying information.
This is the best prof I have EVER had. His expectations are clear, his lectures are clear, he is helpful both in and out of class, and he makes everything amusing. Your education is not complete unless you take at least one of his classes.
Super nice guy, keeps classes interesting with jokes. Doesn't post his lecture notes so you MUST go to class, or have a friend in class. He gives out 10-15 essay questions before the exams, and 2 of them are actually on the exam. As long as you memorize the answers to those, you'll do fine.
Fantastic prof, if I would have taken it earlier in my degree I probably would have minored in RELS! Very helpful, knowledgeable, and wants his students to succeed :) Do the readings & take comprehensive notes and you'll be fine! Don't be intimidated by 2 tests worth 50%...he gives possible test Qs from lectures & picks 2 (+ MC from the readings).
Professor Framin was very difficult to listen to. Though he is enthusiastic about RELS 203 he is a bit monotone. He only has the midterm and the final both 50% though he is open to changing the weighting if you go to him after the final and ask what he thinks you should do. I WARN YOU NOW! You need to be VERY persistant to get your grade changed.
chris changed me. GREAT prof. made everything interesting. Made me switch my major from Poli Sci to Phil. Would take any class of his no matter what it was. Go to classes and you will have fun and get a great mark. Super hot too. ilu chris
Expectations on coursework are very clear and essay outlines are practically written for you, which, in my opinion, isn't great for philosophy but probably depends on the student. Chris was extremely helpful; during his office hours he thoroughly explained several concepts that I had missed due to illness.
Chris is one of the best professors I have had since attending the U of C. He is very knowledgeable and helpful, and makes students feel comfortable asking questions etc. I would highly recommend taking a class with him if you get the chance. Expectations are very clear and grading is fair. Overall, awesome prof, very interesting class.
this class was great. Not my first class taken with him, and I hope it won't be my last.Chris' lectures are interesting and and well organized every single day. also understanding about absence and helps you .Always clear on expectations in papers. He elaborates so well and is the best professor at U of C. Deserves an award or two for sure.
Chris is an amazing prof, hes very funny. You do need have an interest in what hes talking about to enjoy this class. One midterm and a final exam both worth 50% Attendance is necessary to understand, if you go to all classes then an decent A class
Midterm and final worth 50/50 but a must take class! He is an amazing prof and you don't have to take interest in the class to enjoy his lectures. He's super fUN and engaging along with his TA's. Go to class, take good notes and do your readings and you're guaranteed an A+! LOVED THIS CLASS
This class (or business ethics) is a requirement for Computer Science majors and I would highly recommend Prof. Framarin to ease the workload. Completely stress-free class as long as you attend lectures and don't doze off. Almost too easy, but how many times do you get to say that as a CS major.
Dr. Framarin, is an amazing and brilliant professor. He's extremely knowledgeable yet his demeanour is very humble. You can see the kindness in his eyes and how he teaches the class. This professor deserves an award. He keeps the subject interesting, he is very respectful to students, and his intellect is admirable. Wonderful professor.
Chris is the most helpful professor I've had so far. His lessons are clear, and he is easy to reach via office hours or through e-mail. Three papers, no final. Papers are fairly easy if you attend class, since he teaches you how to write them.
Chris was a very helpful. He makes class fun and interesting. He does write his notes on the blackboard so attendance is mandatory. He gives out at least 10 questions that will be on the exam and chooses 2 for short answers. Pretty simple and easy if you go to the review class and attend lectures. He only has 2 exams, a midterm and a final.
This guy just likes talking about the material.Only had to write three papers, and he says explicitly that it doesn't have to be fancy. He even tells you directly what you did wrong in the previous one and how to do better next time. Just make sure you attend class since he doesnt follow the text exactly
He knows his content, and expresses it to us in a way for everyone to understand. He takes passion in his teachings. Sometimes he can get off track with the "extra" stories about the content we learn, but I like that. It gives a more better understanding of the content and shows his interest. Extremely enthusiastic, loves questions. Best prof.
Lectures were very interesting. Only had a midterm and a final, which only consisted of 10-15 questions. The exams were pretty easy as long as you came to class and had a general knowledge of the course. Very thought-provoking.
Amazing prof., very nice and good sense of humor. Interesting lectures and good-pace for those pencil-paper note takers. Very generous on marking exams, removed questions even though the exam was already super easy and average was probably an A- range. Can be taken online but honestly better if you just go to this guy's lectures.
Dr. Framarin is an amazing prof, the kind who changes your life. Got me interested in Eastern philosophy; I'd never considered it before. Very clear speaker, great lectures & good pace. Passionate about his work and it shows. Easy to do well as long as you attend class. Goes out of his way to meet with students & truly cares about your success.
He is super engaging and he knows his material. He is always eager to answer student's questions and clear up any confusion. One of the best professors I have ever had.
YOU THE MAN CHRIS FRAMARIN
Amazing professor. Lectures are thoroughly engaging and course content is very interesting. Gives relevant and sometimes hilarious examples that really connect the big ideas of the course. Would recommend this course as an option for anyone, especially with Framarin.
If you have the slightest bit of interest in philosophy of religion, take a course with Chris Framarin. Amazing professor who knows his material and really makes you think and engage with the material. He is also just a really awesome person who cares about your academic progress and wants you to succeed. Easily the best prof so far at UofC
One of the best profs I've ever had. He's funny, fair, and upfront about everything you need to know for this course. Watch the lectures, write out your answers before the exam (he gives you the questions!), and you'll do fine. Thanks Mr. Framarin!
Not as easy of an A as you would expect. The reading material is lengthy and boring but if you watch the lectures (online) or attend class, he pretty much covers everything that will be on tests. It was nice to have no assignments but at the same time would've helped sink the material in.
He is approachable and edits answers for you if you ask him.
Framarin is one of my favourite profs of my undergrad. He is engaging in lectures, invokes discussion with students and he's extremely clear in his grading criteria. He went over exactly what was expected on each paper very clearly and gave every single student individual office time to help them out.
Chris made the course very interesting and explained the material very clearly. He did not force us to buy a book, but uploaded readings online. I never needed to read them because his explanations are so good. Also, he is extremely clear on his grading criteria. He walks you through step by step on how to write a proper philosophy paper.
Probably better in a classroom environment. Online was bad. Grading was very specific, if you worded something differently than him you lost points. filmed lectures were hard to follow and figure out what was important. shaky camera work and lack of introductions. a lot of readings were given but not a lot made sense or was interesting.
Great professor. Lectures are done online. Very easy to follow. Let's you know how you are graded. As long as you pay attention to the lectures your good to go.
203 was my first online course and it was great. The lectures are easy to follow and pretty interesting. The readings aren't necessary (I only read the stories for Hinduism and was fine). He gives you some of the exam questions beforehand which was nice. As long as you take good notes you'll be fine!
Good class, lots of feedback and discussions were enjoyable. Would definitely take a class with him again.
Wish I had taken Phil 397 and a bunch of other phil classes with him and that I only took rels classes with him. Hope you guys get to take lots of courses with him, would take more with him if i could. Also, he's really sweet.
What an amazing guy. Engaging lectures and discussions. Nice and understanding with his students. Has very clear outlines on his expectations, and gives helpful feedback. Very accessible outside of class. There were just two midterms (each worth 40%) and a final paper (20%). If you just stay on top of the material you'll do fine.
He gives a "listen and repeat" type of course, and not the philosophical thinking type of course. He has a very specific answer on mind for exams, so show up to every class and write down his words exactly and copy and paste that onto your exams and you'll get decent marks.
He's great. Passionate about what he teaches and genuinely cares about his students. The course moves a little too fast but I don't think that's his fault. Strongly recommend.
Chris is a really approachable and likeable guy. This class is an easy A if you go to lecture and write down everything he says. As long as you memorize answers for the test (questions are given in advance) you will easily ace it.
Chris is a great lecturer, easy to follow along and super happy to answer questions. An overall delight even just for an online class. Readings are helpful and fair, although they mirror his lectures so skimming them would suffice. Tells you what he wants you to know for the exam. Stay on top of lecture videos, take notes, you'll be fine.
Honestly one of my favourite profs thus far! His online lectures are very interesting and clear. He prepares you for the midterm and final well. He provides the short-answer questions that will be on the exams beforehand and picks a few to use. No need to be reluctant to take an online class if it's with Chris!
Horrible.
He is the most caring prof I have ever had. He is really funny and his lecture materials are quite interesting. If you take good notes you can easily get an A .
Rels 203 online was my favourite and most straightforward class this semester. You have to put in the time to get a good mark but it is not hard as long as you do. Only get marked on one midterm and the final. He gives test questions before hand and theres never anything on the test that aren't in his lectures. Overall a very interesting course!
I took religion online with him and it was extremely easy. For the exams, he gives you 20 questions that you have to memorize and then he chooses three for the test. His lectures were actually sort of interesting.
He was the most caring and approachable prof I have ever had in my 3 years of academic life. I recommend taking RELS 203 with Framarin if you are looking for an easy A course. All you need to do is take good notes from his posted lectures! The midterm and final was fair.
Chris is a great prof with engaging lectures. However, this class is NOT a gpa booster. This is one of the most difficult classes Ive ever taken. He gives you the midterm questions ahead of time but they are difficult to memorize the answers to, and he is very particular about wording. Great prof, bad class. Feels more like a PHIL class.
Strongly rec against taking class in S/S. Had 18 (15 + one vid being 3 lecs, in his words) + 17 35 lecs vs 23 lecs in the classes shown in the vids. Qs for mt and final given a week in advance (18 qs, 3 chosen) but insane amt of work to prep. I'm in ME on internship, and bw this class and work, I have 0 time. Interesting, but not worth.
The best prof at U of C. I highly recommend taking his RELS 203 class-- make sure you take heavy notes and pay attention to key points. He will give you questions for the midterm and final in advance but will only choose three out of the list for you to be tested on. My notes were thorough and I did very well. There are literally no surprises!
Really great prof, very accomodating, and genuinely wants his students to succeed. If you take good notes and pay attention during lectures, you will do well in this course.
Chris is an engaging, funny, and great professor who doesn't just read off a textbook and relates a lot of lecture material to real life. For RELS201 he provided more than just a class. He gave engaging and memorable insight into old traditions and values that can dramatically improve your life. Not knowledge you'll memorize for a test and forget.
Second time taking Framarin. Love his classes since as long as you write down what he says down verbatim, you are sure to succeed. His exams just require you to write down what he said word for word. So it might be harder in-person, but it's a breeze online. The way he structures lectures is pretty straightforward and fairly interesting too.
To get an A, watch lectures and write down what he says word-for-word. Most of the exams were just recreating arguments from lecture videos. Other than that, interesting lecturer. Wish I had the chance to take in-person.
Be prepared to study well for the final. I found his first two exams very straight-forward, but struggled immensely on the final. Chris is a caring prof, he really wants his students to do their best. He awarded us 3 extra points for struggling with the final exam.
I took Rels 203 online in the Spring with Chris. It was a fantastic course. Engaging and interesting lectures, clearly he is passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. To do well on the exams, make sure to pay attention and take decent notes. The only complaint I had was that the recorded lectures sometimes had poor quality and camera work.
Never pass up an opportunity to take this class with him. Hilarious and very informative lectures and every lecture is available at the start so you can go at your own pace. Take decent enough notes and you will do very well
Nice guy, lectures are well done however get ready to work for that A is insaneligy picky about grading and will dock for even little missing points, NOT A GPA BOOSTER, might bring it down a bit though.
To get an A+ in this class, all you have to do is watch the lecture and create detailed notes as these notes will help with the essay. Also, all three papers were easy and straightforward. He also provided a sample essay which helped to know what structure to follow. The papers were marked within a week and the TAs provided useful feedback.
I would say this class was one of the best ones I've taken and the textbook was only $15 so win. The lectures were always very informative, interesting, and funny with lots of examples to help you understand. Had 3 papers on the 3 religions covered but example papers were given and the grading criteria were very straightforward. 100% recommend
Chris is a genuinely good guy who cares about his students. Just make sure you understand exactly what he wants in his papers; I found the essay instructions a bit confusing. But do that and you'll absolutely be fine. I also found him to be a lenient grader. Also, I was at a B+ for my final grade and he bumped me up 1% to an A-. Take his class!
RELS 203 with Mr. Framarin was one of the best classes I've ever taken. He explained the content of the course extremely well, and I had no trouble understanding anything covered. He knows his stuff, and it shows during his lectures. If you have the opportunity to take a class with him, I would say you definitely, definitely should.
seriously one of the best profs out there. shows care and support to his students. knows the material and answers emails. essay assignments are based on the lectures. just take detailed notes and you will do good in this class.
Amazing professor. I am not a philosophy student but I thoroughly enjoyed this class and learned a lot from Chris. His classes are very dependent on class participation and they're run in a seminar style. Take very detailed notes (literally write down word for word what he says) because these concepts are important for the papers.
Dr. Framarin is a solid prof - very caring for his students, clearly passionate in his role. Moves at a nice pace through lectures and lets students contribute a lot to discussions. Be prepared for A LOT of discussions though, and I thought he graded tough. However, he is totally open to feedback and approachable. Recommend him for sure!
Amazing professor! Chris is engaging, organized, and explains the content very well.
Grade consisted of 3 papers covering each of the religious traditions we covered. These essays weren't the easiest per say as he did look for specifics, but they weren't hard if you put time and thought into it. His lectures were very easy to understand, and I found it to be very interesting! Would take him again
Seems a little disorganized at times but is a great prof & really cares for his students. His assignments are very specific but he tells you exactly what he's looking for and they aren't difficult if you show up for class and watch lectures. He wants us to do well and is super understanding of the fact that we have other stressful classes. DO IT!
Amazing professor! I learned a lot from his class. I'd say this class is a GPA booster if you go to lectures and take careful notes.
Chris is the best prof I've had. I've taken 3 classes with him so far and every time is better than the last. The papers are simple and straight forward. I added textbook because he does use readings from books but really they are like 20 pages at most, never the whole textbook. You have to come to class tho, it helps your understanding so much.
One of the best philosophy courses I have ever taken. He was always thorough and precise with presenting arguments, which made instructions for the papers very clear on what exactly he wanted us to write about. Was flexible with grading and extremely caring. There's also no exams for the course. Overall to get A+, read+attend+write precise papers.
Engaging lectures with clear explanations. The course content is interesting and relevant. Using unstuckstudy along with the provided materials helped me stay on top of the work and do well.
Very accommodating and accessible, and clearly wants students to do well in his classes.
He is an amazing professor. All of his lectures were very fun to listen to. I have learned a lot from them. His quizzes were fairly easy if you went through his lectures and took note of everything he says. I would definitely take his classes again.
Took RELS 203 async w/ him. VERY funny prof & extremely knowledgeable - his lectures were very easy to get through. Available outside of class via email and was very happy to help and see students succeed. Couldn't recommend him more strongly.
Best professor I've ever had. Wish he could teach all of my classes
He is a nice guy, but I don't think this course format is his strong suit. Maybe it would be better if it were a Mon/Wed/Fri type. It was a hybrid with one in-person per week and the rest asynchronous. I would've appreciated using the one in-person class we did have to get more details from him, rather than turning it into a discussion class.
Best prof ive had in my entire degree. Took him in the summer and we had weekly discussion questions and 3 MC tests. I've never actually enjoyed watching lectures before and Dr. Framarin's lectures are funny and interesting. He has a clear passion for his work and research and he wants to see students succeed. wish he taught my required courses :(
Chris is a phenomenal professor that you can tell is quite passionate in what he teaches. Class consisted of three papers, and class discussions that counted as participation. He was accommodating, caring, and truly did want you to succeed. Second class I've taken with him, and I hope to take more.
His classes were very fun and engaging and he genuinely cares about his students. I would definitely recommend this class to everyone.
