he is an unbelievably amazing percussionist, period. always has an encouraging and excited attitude. chris is awesome!
TAKE him if he teaches this class again, he was great! He was enthusiastic and interesting and I actually enjoyed going to lecture sometimes. Not to mention it's extremely easy. Just do the listening early, listen to the music while doing your homework or whenever you have the chance and you'll get an A for sure.
Professor Froh was one of the best professors I've had at UCD. He made MUS10 interesting (and I was not expecting to find this class interesting at all). There were 3 writing assignments, 4 listening quizzes, 1 midterm, and 1 final, all of which were pretty easy. If you're planning to take MUS10, take it with Prof. Froh!
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!!!!!! He will make you want to practice, only a good music teacher who loves what they play can do that for you.. Take the Samba class, you won't regret it!
I LOVE MR.FROH! he's so fun to just talk to, and he's SO helpful with your papers and stuff. I just loved going to his office hours and hanging out with him. His lectures are funny and I did not miss a class. I would seriously take this class again just because he is teaching it.
He is a really funny teacher and I would definitely take his class again if he is teaching. He makes his lectures fun and easy to remember the material. So go on and take this class !! =]
Prof Froh was a great lecturer, passionate about the subject and extremely helpful. This was an easy class, but attendence and listening to the selections is a must. But listening to music as hw, how bad can that really be?! Listening quizzes, papers and midterm were easy, final was a little harder. Definately take this class if he's teaching!!
Great class for those that enjoy a wide range of music. Exams mainly from lecture material, some from the reading. Very helpful in office hours and with advice on papers. Quizzes isn't hard. Enjoyed this class alot. Froh is very lively and energetic, keeps everyone awake and laughing. Highly recommend this class with Froh!
Froh is an awesome teacher! Extremely quirky and funny, which is helpful for a 9am class. The exams are all in his lectures, and in his book. If you're too tired to wake up, just go to discussion and read the book. If you have some basic music background, the class is very easy. Mus 10 is highly recommended if Froh is teaching (usually in Spring)
unkie chris is the best. i look forward to samba every week. i'm not a "music person"( i cant read music and it can take me a while to pick a beat up), but i feel very comfortable in the class. he teaches by skatting you your part! i've been in samba for 3 yrs- i never want to stop! TAKE SAMBA, DO THE FUNK! CHIRS IS AMAZING!
Being in Unkie Chris' Samba School is amazing! He's definitely one of the greatest guys here at Davis, and if you want to be a part of any music ensemble, this is the one to do!
Chris Froh is awesome! His lectures are so much fun and very entertaining. MUS 106 IS THE BEST CLASS EVER. I learned so much about rock and roll and just music in general. I would definitely recommend this class even to people who don't like rock music (but you will after taking this class!) Class is super easy too!
History of Rock is the coolest class ever. Froh is an amazing musician and professor. Hilarious, knowledgeable and inspiring. I came out of class everyday inspired to listen to the music on the spotify-this is literally your homework, to listen to great music. I loved going to lecture, I learned so much. The projects are funcreative.
Mr. Froh is so hyper. He makes the material very colorful and fun. I think about it like he's advertising the material every single time he lectures. Sometimes it's kind of draining. Overall, he's a great professor and really straightforward. May seem intimidating at first but he made the life of Mozart super enjoyable to learn. Wud take him again
Froh is the best professor ever. He's funny, intelligent and super enthusiastic about the subject. He always encourages students to participate in lecture. Only 1 midterm, 4 listening quizzes (which are only naming the artist and song title), and 1 final. Take his class, no matter what he's teaching!
Prof Froh is so entertaining, I actually felt bad when I would miss lecture! Easy pass, you do have to study to get a solid A though. Interesting assignments, awesome guy, great music taste
Don't take this class if you are not truly into rock music.
The rock curriculum isn't what you expect. You need to do quite a bit of studying and reading for a good grade. It's not necessarily easy for everyone.
I cannot recommend Froh/Mus106 enough. You don't need a musical background for this class, the exams and projects are a breeze, and the homework is listening to Led Zeppelin. Froh is so enthusiastic and adorkable, I actually sought out another class of his because I had such a good time. Probably my favorite Davis professor.
I wasn't a huge fan of rock music and didn't know much about it before taking this class, but I learned a lot and left with a greater appreciation. The best thing about this class is Froh's enthusiastic character. His lectures are amusing yet super informative. I regret not going to at least one of his OH. I'd definitely take another class of his!
Chris Froh is the best. You can tell he really cares about the subject, as his lectures are fun, entertaining, and informative. I honestly regret having to miss a few lectures. Listening quizzes are super easy if you pay attention in class and listen to the playlists a few times. Overall, the best class I've ever taken.
One of my absolute favorite professors here at Davis. Chris is the best. His lectures are amazing, and they make you WANT to show up to class! Each class is honestly a blast, and I cannot say enough about how passionate he is at teaching it. Take this prof!
Best professor Ive ever had.
I'm only in my second year at Davis but I can already tell you that Chris Froh is the best professor I will ever have had here. It's so rare to find a professor who's both brilliant and teaches a well-structured course while also being modest, enthusiastic, adorable and genuinely one of the most hilarious people I've ever met
Other than my own interest in learning about the history of rock music, Froh fed the flame and gave us so much interesting material, great music and fun projects. The weeks of closure from the smoke made me genuinely miss lecture. Professor Froh has THE BEST personality and is easy to speak to. I miss this class already! Totally recommend!!
He is definitely a nice person and a good professor. The only thing I do not this class is his listening quiz. (I really do not good at identify the song based on a 30s clips). What I want to say is that this class is not for everyone. This is not a chill class at all (at least for me, especially when I already have two class that stress me a lot.
He's a great lecturer but the class criterion are pretty terrible. It's basically a massive exercise in memorization, which detracts from your ability to focus on enjoy the richness on the material. The best comparison to what studying for his exams feels like is Bis 2C, where you basically have to memorize the entire tree of life.
Get ready to memorize three separate facts for each 60 different artists, record labels, and bands. This comes out to about over 17 full pages of memorization for the midterm. FOR A MUSIC CLASS BTW. This class and professor is a joke. He takes it way too seriously, as this is just ridiculous for a music history class.
According to class description, this class is for non-major students. If your not music major, AVOID him. This is not a chill and easy class. I really regret take this class.
I really dislike the way he design his lectures. This class is for non music major students and he shouldnt expect us to get familiar with 60 terms and artists in a short period. The class is really time consuming and frustrating. Just avoid if you dont have time or have a busy schedule.
I'm a biology major with zero background in music theory & zero musical skill. I took this class as a fun break from my major classes, and it is the highlight of my week. Chris is hilarious, caring, passionate, and engaging . If you GO TO LECTURES and really PAY ATTENTION, doing well on the exams and quizzes isn't hard. But yes, effort is required.
The professor is super nice and friendly, but if you are not a music person the class could be pretty challenging. Go to his office hour (His super friendly and always willing to help).
Was honestly was one of the best professors I've had. His lectures were the highlight of my week where I'd usually just watch them all in one day. He's very funny and makes things very easy to understand. Quizzes are very easy and the projects weren't bad.
I love Prof Froh!! Was so helpful and accessible outside of class. Lectures were asynchronous. He was literally so inspirational in his lectures and the material taught was so interesting to learn. The only thing hard with me was learning all the songs. Other than that, I highly recommend this class!!! So EYE-OPENING!
One of my favorite classes and professors! He's clearly knowledgable and his lectures are engaging. You genuinely learn a lot about music and start to appreciate the older artists, older bands, different styles of music, etc. Very understanding during COVID, some deadlines were pushed back. You had 3 attempts for the quizzes (30%). Solid professor.
Very free and rock Professor! Kind and helpful also has humor and charming personality. Easy to get an A if you are a fan of rock n roll.
Probably the best professor I've ever had at Davis. This class was incredibly interesting, and Froh made every lecture super funny and engaging. He deeply cares about both the subject and the students, and you can clearly see it every time he lectures. Assignments aren't hard if you put in the effort. Take this class. Easy A + Chris is the GOAT.
Professor Froh is AWESOME! This was my favorite class I've taken here. Do not need to have any musical background. Froh is so enthusiastic and makes the lectures entertaining. 2 cumulative midterms that were easy to study for. Overall cannot recommend this class enough. I was sad leaving the last lecture. Take a class with Froh!!!
Lectures are engaging and interesting, and the course wasn't too difficult (granted it was an introductory course). Mr. Froh obviously cares about what he teaches and takes time to create good lectures. Most of the information is taught by TA's throughout the week, although there is one section that is taught by him in addition to the lecture.
Extremely likable and funny. Teaches very clearly and even for those who know music theory, it was always a fun class. TA's usually teach the sections but if you can get the section Froh teaches himself, it's a blast. Attendance is not necessary though it's "mandatory." But he may give extra credit to those who show up throughout the quarter.
Is an amazing lecturer. In this course, the TA's mainly teach most of the material but there is also a section that Froh teaches. I didn't get his section but if you can please get it. I missed a quiz due to personal problems and was able to take it at his personal office, in which he showed a lot love and care about my well being.
The course is split between one lecture by the professor and three discussion sections a week by TAs (and him if you get his discussion section) a week. However, it was really easy, as the TAs + the professor were very approachable and helpful, making sure every student knew the material. It also really helped me with understanding music better.
Didn't really "teach" this class, however, his class had a great structure. There is 1 "lecture" which is basically quiz time and there are 3 discussions which are the real lectures. Pretty easy class if you have a background in any kind of music.
He is a really good professor, full of passion. But MUS 003a is more depend on the TA. Contents are easy.
Absolute BEST prof I've ever had. He's super passionate and knowledgeable about music and the lectures are very engaging. Definitely take this class!
I love him so much he's actually the best professor I've ever had at davis. I almost wish I was a music major so I could take more classes with him! The tests and assignments weren't too bad, but I would recommend going to OH to have a more clear idea with the projects (very vague prompts). You don't have to know anything about music to take this!
Super cool guy. Very passionate about music and teaching. You don't need a music background to take the class either. Easy A if you some effort in. Take this class if youre interested in rock music!!
Prof. Froh's class is always fun and engaging, especially for those who are passionate about rock music. He loves teaching and it shows! Lots of projects, quizzes, and small assignments to balance out with test material, and all but the final were open note. His class does require that you put a bit of effort in, but with it it's an easy, fun A!
Professor Froh is sooooo gooooooood! His energy and passion for the subject matter, rock music, is demonstrated to its full in his lectures in which he enthusiastically explains all the music in a clear matter. He also demonstrates class topics on stage by occasionally playing drums and other instruments on stage. He's also chill with the grading.
Dr Froh is a super engaging professor, and I loved his class. I experienced personal challenges which hindered my performance in this class, but I still feel like I got a lot from it. For the written elective assignment choose your book/library source early, and try to stick to it.
Best professor in the world. Inspiring, Dedicated, Passionate, Innovative, Encouraging, Knowledgeable, Approachable, Caring, Talent...
Really nice and funny professor. I enjoy his lecture very much!!!!!
Great course made better by Froh's lectures and dad jokes. Despite it being at 9am, he brought energy to every class and made theory approachable and very enjoyable. If he's teaching MUS3A next quarter, wait to take it with him.
C. Froh is the best instructor I have met in UCD. He is humoromus and passionate in courses. HWs and discussions weight 60%. It is easy if you learned piano before. If not, you may spend more time on reciting the staffs but it is NOT time spending.
Dynamic lecturer, very engaging. TAs were all extremely helpful, and so was Prof Froh. Made lectures and other material engaging and interesting. Highly recommend.
Very fun and engaging lectures. I also really liked my TA and recommend him, I forget his name but he's from Taiwan. I would definitely take this class at some point if you haven't yet. The final was in-person though which can be stressful.
I had him for both 3A and 16A. This man is entertaining and funny. He's passionate about music and it's very evident in the way he lectures in both courses. For 3A, attend the lectures because he doesn't post the slides and be prepared to take notes if it's your first time delving into music theory. "sussy baka" (don't remember context)
His exams and quizzes are tough. First, he has one mid and final, and he tests on very detailed things. And he had 4 quizzes each quiz, he needed to listen to 30-50 songs and memorize their titles and authors. don't take his class, it's the most painful class I've ever taken at Davis. There's a word limit, or I could spit out a dissertation
Nice class great professor!
Professor Froh is amazing! I had him for both 3A and 16A and he's really encouraging to new music majors who are ready to learn. He's very easy to understand and is super hilarious. Really wish he could teach all of my music classes.
He's 100% my favorite professor I've had. Super interesting class, funny guy, manageable workload, and fair quizzes and tests. I genuinely looked forward to going to lecture and if I could recommend any class to people, it would be this one. Such a fun class and I learned so much
Undisputed goat. He makes going to lecture fun and interesting and the material is easy to understand.
Honestly if you complain about this class it might be a skill issue. Froh makes class fun to attend and bases grades on 4 discussion assignments + 4 listening quizzes + midterm/final + one creative assignment which are all super easy if you attend lecture and review a little. All you gotta do is love some rock music and you are set.
Absolutely fantastic lectures, he's so funny and engaging it just makes the class feel like rock tea story hour. It's easy to succeed if you just go to lecture and take light notes. Your TA heavily determines the difficulty of discussions but the assignments themselves are not hard. Overall very fun and very interesting,100000/10 would take again.
Super engaging lectures. Expect to be entertained! Tests are pretty easy if you pay attention in class. No recorded lectures. Course project is not hard, but requires time and creativity. Office hours are great for project help or just to chat. Froh is awesome!
Very passionate, energetic, and humorous professor. His ability to teach this course made attending lecture the highlight of my week. I learned a lot about rock and modern culture. His listening quizzes and exams were very straightforward. Homework was minimal and the final project was easy! I even got a free shirt from him. Highly recommend!!!
Probably the best class ever at UC Davis. Don't need any music knowledge to get a good grade in this class. Lecture's are fun and you actually learn things that are interesting.
Froh is so adorable...may I even say attractive? He's a great professor, he's really funny, and his lectures are entertaining and easy to digest. He's so smart too! I think he went to Stanford, which is super cool. This is a rare occurrence where a prof not only knows his stuff, but can also teach it. He's so good at his job I have a crush on him.
He's a great professor, he made lectures very engaging. You have to make sure to attend lectures because they aren't recorded. Exams are taken in person and on paper. Weekly labs in the discussion section aren't that difficult if you pay attention. Choose your ta wisely. Don't choose Dean. he wasn't helpful and made things confusing.
He asked us during lecture what looked "sussy baka" about a minor melodic scale and I watched the people around me curl up and cringe it was really funny. I never thought I would look forward to 9am music theory lectures until I took him, amazing guy.
Worst lecturer
He's very energetic and the lectures are chill. There are some weird policies in the structure of the course but its not that big of a deal. The lectures did make me cringe a lot but its an easy class and music is fun!
Absolutely wonderful. A joy to be around and listen to. Even though lecture was at 10 am, I was eager to wake up every morning to get to class. Lectures were so interesting. He threw candy at us and did the worm. Listening quizzes every two/three weeks. Work was easy and manageable if you went to lecture+ studied. End quarter project. So kind. gorg
Amazing professor!! I had him for 3a and 13a both this quarter and I learned SO MUCH. Lectures were literally never boring and information was super digestible. Froh is hilarious, engaging, and super talented. Take his classes!!!!!
Class is really easy if you just go to the lectures and make sure to do the labs. He makes the lectures fun and entertaining even though they're at 9 am. Definitely recommend!
I took this class as an "Easy GE" (based of what others have said), and oh boy. If you don't know a single thing about music theory or have never played musical instruments before, this class is lowkey hard sometimes. Find a buddy to work on labs with, and hope you get a good TA (Ali is great) that can reinforce the topics taught during lecture.
Amazing professor, super engaging lectures.
He just funny he does all these like dad jokes that are "cringe" but i got a nice chuckle out of them. Just an all around good dude. I didnt like that he liked the cowboy carter album so much. That album was terrible. Regardless this guy is cool
His lectures were always interesting and he has a fun way of teaching, pretty unique to my other profs. Chill, however be prepared to do lots of work outside of class. Not too heavy workload but requires a significant knowledge of music theory. I recommend for those who play an instrument or have studied theory in the past (-pianist).
Literally the goat. Literally my uncle. He's so awesome. Can solve a rubic's cube. What else do you need
Makes class fun and tries to build community while also effectively helping students.
lecture is not mandatory but Froh makes it worth going. the discussion is mandatory and the TA often goes over the material. I had no prior music knowledge so it was a bit confusing for me but Froh and the TA's do a good job in teaching it. I even learned to play the piano now, would recommend this to anybody looking for a Ge courses.
Literally the goat. Very funny during lectures (cheesy dad jokes) and occasionally plays instruments. This class would be easy GE if you have any prior knowledge of music theory or played any instruments. Lectures not mandatory and it was very early (9am) when I took it but he makes it worth going. 1000/10 would take again.
Awesome professor, awesome class. He seems to enjoy teaching a lot
Hands down the undisputed goat. The lectures are so enjoyable, especially if you like the music. Easy class and very very fun.
Professor Froh is hands down the most passionate and energetic professor I've ever had. Probably partially because the class is History of Rock Music but I was never bored, Chris Froh is an amazing lecturer. As long as you show up to class and do the weekly listening lists, you'll get an A no problem.
the goat! my fav prof at davis! please if you have the chance to take this class, do. so much fun, lectures were engaging and very interesting, and he's so funny. and taking this class with him made me interested in minoring in music! super easy writing assigns, weekly quizzes, two exams, and term project -- all super easy if you show up to class.
Great and engaging lectures, definitely recommend taking this class if you have the chance!
Out of all the professors I've had in Davis he was the best! He's hella funny and his lectures are very engaging and funny. Definitely his lectures are worth attending, you won't get bored. I mean attendance wasn't mandatory only for discussions. Overall his quizzes and exams weren't hard especially if you paid attention in lecture.
Took this course for AH credits and ended up with >100%. It was very easy if you play the piano or have any foundation of music theory. Prof. Froh drops the two lowest lab scores and posts problem instructions every time before exams (know what is tested!). My TA Joe is super helpful during discussion. Recommend to everyone who wants an AH course!
