Ok, if you are looking for a bad grade in Religion 101, take Chris Heard. This guy is ridiculous. He is boring and doesnt really care that his students cant memorize the entire old testement in one semester. HIS TEST ARE RIDICULOUS!
Chris Heard should NOT be teaching Religion 101. Never, ever, under ANY circumstances would I recommend subjecting yourself to his class. It is a huge waste of time and a great way to fail.
Do you like spending 10 hours a night studying for a test only to find out you've failed? Do you like ****graphic Garth Brooks music videos? Do you like wasting your time and precious tuition money? Then take Dr. Heard's Religion 101 class!
Example of a test given by Chris Heard: QUESTION #1: Please write word for word the book of Genesis (worth 2500 points, no credit will be given if you miss ANY word) BONUS QUESTION: Please give a detailed description of genealogy from Abraham to Jesus.

GOT INSOMNIA? This class is your cure! Sleep Guaranteed- you're gonna fail anyway.
i guess i dont need to write anything because everyone beat me too it. oh well. just read what they wrote and multiply that by 10x.

Ok so his first semester here he struggled but the guy realized it and is chaging things around. His class is alright but how interesting can make the history of Isreal? He is a very nice guy and cares about you alot. YOu have to work but it is ok.
Spring semester much better than Fall '03. I got a perfect score on the first exam and I've never taken any religion class before. He has totally redone the tests and curriculum and I think Fall 2004 will be even better b/c he is continuing improvements.
I think he is a great Professor! He has really done a good job at trying to make this class fun. Don't be afraid to take his class! It is not that hard if just put some time into it!

Always willing to help...goes out out of his way for his students more than any professor I have ever had. He basically gives the test away every time, and I think that when over half of the class has As, there has to be a reason for it.
anyone who speaks bad about heard just can't cut it in general. it is a tough class, but this is college - he is a goofy guy, but he helps out a ton, and offers so many bonus points that i finished the class over a perfect score. its not that hard at all.
I tooke his class Spring 04 and it is still harder than any religion 101 class should be. I've been taking religion all my life and this guy makes this class needlessly difficult. The class is do-able but if you want an A take another professor.
descent
hard!
He has too much time--he puts a TON of effort into his preparation guides that are due every day, and into his powerpoint presentations. His class is pretty boring ususally, but it's nice that he's organized. Overall, he's ok but the class itself isnt fun
Me and three other students had to go to the department chair about Chris Heard. His class made my life a living hell. He can't teach and treats us like we're in middle school, then grades the test like we're seeking PH.d's in Religion. Don't take this class, you'll regret it, I promise.
this guy puts soooo much effort into his work,it's obvious that he genuinely cares for his students. he has such a passion for what he does and it's really inspriring. as for the tests - well they keep us up to scratch for the exams hello!
he is so sweet and enthusiastic plus he is pretty darn good looking
This class is toooo hard! Alot of preperation is needed. Although he is extremly helpful and organized, you still need to study a looot to get a decent/good grade. Unless you've been to sunday school, dont take his class.too diffiicult!
He is rediculous, his study guides for tests are on the wrong material he grades obscenely hard, and hes just simply not a good teacher. He is also not very responsive to students when asking for help, overall the worst teacher I have ever had.
The classes itself are interesting, and he obviously loves his subjects matter. But the tests are impossible (esp. #3). On average, I put 10+ hours into studying for each exam and I still didn't get the grades I want. My 500 level classes are way easier than this one. I
the hardest professor i have ever had and he gives so much work it is rdiculous don't take him, please!!
he puts soooooo much effort into his work, its amazing and inspiring. He genuinaly cares about his studetns. HOWEVER ...the class is very difficult and requries a lot of work and time. ALOT. WARNING: IF NOT A RELGION MAJOR, SEEK ANOTHER PROFESSOR.
Dr. Heard does his job well. It is by no means an easy class, but if you genuinely try and learn the material, you'll be rewarded. I didn't do super well in the class, but I got what I deserved. He'll teach you religion well, plus he has a great passion for his work.
Yeah, that's great that he likes his work and all, but the man is impossible! He goes by that stupid rule that you should have I three hours of homework for every hour, and trust me, he does fill that up! I am in his class now and I have officially decided to finish religion in summer school!
True, he is a hard teacher, but he has clear expectations. All you have to do is a bit more studying than most other classes to get an A. He is VERY helpful and always available, and likes his students. He is goofy and funny and so very very cute...
Put the time and dedication to learn the material and you'll be fine. STUDY GROUPS HELP A LOT! At times the class is boring but c'mon, it's the Old Testament, that's not his fault! Very nice, always available and very helpful.
he is the thoughest professor in religion i have ever seen. Avoid taking this class if you are not christian or have not studied the old testament previously to this class. The shear volume of stuff he tries to fit into this course is mindblowing. Avoid, avoid, avoid!
His tests are really tough, but he makes class interesting and tries to keep lectures short... The amount of reading can sometimes get a lil rediculous, but you can usually get by with skimming for hw assignments, but you'll have to really study for the tests
Awesome class! Just study the night before and you'll be fine on the test.
Dr. Heard is great. Trust me, his tests are not that hard. I know a lot of people that consistently got over a hundred on them. Class is very interesting and Dr. Heard is very enthusiastic about the subject. I definitely reccommend this prof!
You're not going to slide by, but with a little effort you really can get an A in this class. Heard is so helpful and so enthusiastic, a little too much, but he really likes teaching. If you are unclear about the subject matter going in, take Heard, cause he is so clear.
Dr. Heard is the MAN! He's very enthusiastic and will often come dressed as biblical characters for fun. All his tests give a free 10% so there is no reason, unless you dont give a F*($ about the class to get less than a B on the exams. *This doesn't mean you dont have to study!* Have fun!
If you know the OT before the class you should be fine. If not FORGET ABOUT IT. Makes himself available for his students. Seems to really care. Need to study hard for test. For Test three you can not wait till the night before. I recommend him, but just be prepared to go to work.
great study guides, easy tests as long as you study. posts powerpoint presentations online. does everything he can to make sure you do well if you try
I've taken religion courses my entire life. The first tests were super easy for me, but the final was impossible. Oh, and I didn't realize that the final was HALF of my grade. Keep that in mind. And also, I should've done the extra credit, even though I had almost 100% before the final. I've never had a religion teacher quite like him.
People who don't like him are just extremely lazy. He is SO helpful and clear and has an adorable personality. He is a bit demanding but really not that hard if you study. Yeah I said study. In college. Imagine that.
dont take this guy!!! he is a joke. he thinks hes funny but hes not. his lectures are so boring. try to avoid him if you can and take willis
He is a great teacher. No text books. Homework every night with readings and short quizzes on blackboard but if you do well on them you won't even have to take the final. He is fun and upbeat. Lectures aren't any less boring than any other class. I'd say they're actually interesting.
Heard is very precise and methodical in his teaching. He is not too hard, but you will learn the information. I am going to take him again soon for an upper division class.
Dr. Heard is a true Biblical scholar. He is one of the most intelligent teachers I have ever met. I like that he teaches his class like a history class. He rarely interjects his own point of view, or even a Christian point of view. The hours of work he dedicates to preparing for class is astounding. He wants everyone to do well in his class.
Must've done something to improve since the previous comments. Class isn't too hard. Homework before every class are preps on BB that take 1 to 2 hrs. Very enthusiastic in class, but actually shy and awkward outside of it. Class is a little boring, Tests are reasonable and if you ace all the quizzes on the preps, you don't have to take the final.
not really a hard class, the daily quizzes are actually harder than the tests. he tells you exactly what to study for, adn you may not have to take the final. i recommend him.
This is a pretty fair class, not to hard, but you still have to try. There is no text book and everything is online. He makes really good powerpoint presentations and is a nice guy.
He is never in class and he is way to smart. He teached me in Faith and Reason and Religion 101. He sucked in both by degrading his students thoughts and concepts.
Heard is the man! He takes class participation, so make sure you're in class on time...and have your "clicker" with you as well. Do well on his online quizzes (which are hw) and do the test outlines and you'll do fine.
Bright as a sunlamp; cool as an LED.
chris to teach rel 101 differently this year, with projects instead of tests. class pretty easy. homework is important to do to be able to follow along the next day. he does a lot of activities during class. sometimes, i felt like i hadn't learned much, but then helped my friends study for their r101 class, and i feel like i learned what they did.
You have 40 points for the entire semester. 10 for the final, 10 for attendance/participation and 20 for two activities of your choice. No homework other than watching a few videos, no major papers, watched videos, and had major interaction with the class and teacher through activities. Easiest college class I've taken yet and incredibly fun.
I dreaded taking REL101 because ive never touched a bible in my life let alone actually read it. Heard makes awesome powerpoints and is super helpful in and out of class. I dont think attendance is mandatory but his tests are based on lecture, so go! hes a really cool guy (though sometimes kind of awkward..)
Very nice family orientated man. I don't thnnk he necessarily belongs in teaching though. His priortiies are else where. His teachings style is like none other teacher ever! His class is all online. Which can be good/distracting and bad. He grades super hard and his grading system is insanely dumb. Don't take him if you want to learn!
This guy is a kook, he plays theme songs before his classes, and he thinks he's the man. He trys to be funny but in reality it's quite the opposite. His grading style is extremely intense, and the way he teaches in class doesn't prepare you for the way he grades at all. He's extremely annoying and uninteresting, so I would avoid him if you can.
Robert "Chris" Heard is a pathetic excuse for a religion teacher. It's classes like his that make people who don't want to take religion hate it even more. His class is joke, he doesn't prepare you at all for his tests, and his humor is embarassing. He needs to re-think his career.
I had no clue about religion before i came into this class but i learned a lot in this class. His explanations and lectures are accurate and specific, but when you take online tests after lectures, his lectures are useless to answering those questions and many people receive a zero on those tests.
I have not taken religion before this and I feel its a disadvantage to take this class without much knowledge. He assigns a quiz after every class and I have got 0 out of 250 in four of quizzes although I have paid attention in class. Although I've lost interest in his class, he seems to be inconsistent with what he expects from students.
heard is out of control, a horrific teacher, tests don't reflect lectures, he should be working at SNL or teaching kindergarteners to play dress-up or something, not teaching Religion, because all he wants to see is his students doing skits and other bogus stuff. AVOID.
I started class thinking the video game grading system was awesome. There is a reason it is unique to Heard: it doesn't work. I never knew what grade I had in the class. I failed the online assessments often because I've never gone to Bible School. Tests not related to lectures. If you just want to pass Rel 101 with a C and facebook, take him.
Has a really good sense of humor and is a really nice guy. His lectures can be somewhat hard to follow and I wish he had clearer powerpoints that he posted on Courses. However I found out that you can use his youtube channel and get quality lectures from there. It sort of makes me wonder why he doesn't use those lectures in class.
Grading system made it impossible to track your progress. Lectures are impossible to follow & boring. Not a strong professor. I switched to Carr and I got an A. Carr is amazing.
Really nice guy with a great sense of humor. Is there for help if you need him. If you aren't doing well at first (like I was), make sure you go and ask him how you can improve, otherwise you'll be screwed, as some of the assignments can be confusing. Otherwise, just pay attention to the lectures and take notes; you'll love him!
Great prof! Really easy to get an A if you show up to class! Weekend exercises were a little hard, but most of your grade is attendance and preparation guides which are free points. Heard is really funny and actually cares about his students plus I learned a lot without putting in that much effort.
his class is mean to be for theology or religion majors. It is not like usual introductory religion courses, his questions are mean to see different perspectives, reasoning behind the texts, and the literature of the biblical texts. It is not like regular other introduction to old testament classes. He is the wrong teacher for the class.
Dr. Heard is a really nice man and is passionate about his subject. If you do your work outside of class, it is easy to get an "A." There are no in class tests or quizzes. Do not listen to the negative comments; He is a good teacher.
Dr. Chris is a great guy. He is personable and friendly. He is passionate about what he is teaching, but can lose some students during lectures. He offers interesting insight, but is spacey and disorganized. SO. MUCH. HOMEWORK. be prepared to work
Dr. Heard structures his class uniquely, like a video game, and it is that uniqueness that will make or break the class for most people. For me, it was an intuitive and stress-free approach, but it's gimmicky so it could annoy people too. The class is really easy though so there isn't much to complain about even if you object to its structure.
The tests and assignments are all done online on Courses. The questions are super specific. I suggest that you do the assignments and assessments as soon as they are assigned so that you don't forget to do them.
Everything is online, assignments every class -- very annoying. His "battles" or tests get harder throughout the semester, plus his grading is messed up so you need at least a 97 to get an A.
Dr. Heard really knows his stuff, but he tends to get too theological and that can bore students (since it's a GE and not everyone is there by choice). He isn't a hard A thats for sure, but you got to work!! He never gives in class tests (BEST PART), but you're expected to give tests every couple days via courses Pepperdine. Take him!
Love this professor! Such a fun guy! He always has loud music playing at the start of class and has an anagram for the class to solve every time. Classwork + all tests/exams are online! Cons are that he's not always too clear on his instructions and homework can be a bit lengthy + require lots of reading... but its usually pretty interesting!
Heard is a good teacher and his lectures are actually usually pretty interesting, but I hate the way his class is set up. He assigns way more reading than is necessary to answer the homework questions and it is exhausting to complete. I also wish he would give a later deadline for the homework, like midnight instead of 8pm the night before class.
Everything including homework, tests, and in class assignments, are ALL online. It was the easiest A I have ever gotten. You don't have to read. The homework are quizzes that you can take an endless amount of times and you just make a Word document of the answers and you're fine. The tests are just the quiz question plus some writing.
Extremely difficult course. Says that about 100 minutes of reading required per class session, in reality about 6 hours. He expects you to know a lot about the Bible, even though this is an introductory course. This is the first semester he has changed the layout of his course, and it is extremely unfair. Take a different professor.
Easiest class ever if you just figure out his system. It's all online and you can always get 100% on the quizzes because you can take them an unlimited amount of times. There are SO many opportunities for points that even if you get C's on all your tests, you can still get an A in the class. That's what happened to me.
Let me just tell you, this professor is ridiculous! This class was probably my hardest class of the semester. I don't understand why he makes the tests and and quizzes so difficult. PLEASE AVOID! I am not kidding, this is my first C and I worked hard for it. TRUST ME DO NOT TAKE. You would think religion would be easy since its a ge, but no way!
Okay so this class is dumb and called "World of Biblecraft" ?All of the quizzes (i.e. harvest runs) are online and you can take them an unlimited amount of times. Make sure you get 100s on every quiz and save all the answers in a google doc to study for the tests because they are the same. Learn the system!!
Tbh I would definitely avoid Heard for 101. His class is so unnecessary. His lectures aren't great and there is so much assigned reading. The whole class is pretty much online, so its honestly all about working the system.
Heard changes his class structure regularly so you never know what you'll get, but luckily my class was pretty easy.. and strange. Religious role playing where all grades came from in character papers and reflection essays. A LOT of writing and no quizzes for me, but an all around easy class. He's also very willing to help if you go to office hours
Dr. Heard is extremely organized and I have learned a lot in his class. The reading and the tests are not easy but hes a negotiable professor. He curve grades in a deliberate manner and he gave extra credit if you strive toward it. I would not regret taking his class overall. Plus, hes the most funny and caring professor ever.
A pretty good guy but I just did not like how the goes about his class
Absolutely ridiculously disorganized class. He said he wanted to switch things up this semester and it turns out his grading system was super flawed and too complicated to understand. No idea how I ended up with the grade I got because his system was so confusing. Avoid at all costs
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He's a nice guy but a HORRIBLE teacher. I could not tell you a single thing he taught me, essentially the entire class taught themselves through the 2-a-week online quizzes we had to take. He also had us play these long non sensical games that were a waste of time. For your sake, don't take the class.
Challenging class, but if you care about learning Hebrew, prof. Heard makes it a really rewarding experience. No tests or quizzes, just pure participation, so try your best and show up to class and you'll get a good grade.
