****!!speaks quietly and wont raise voice when asked. very sarcastic. when he asks a question he wants the EXACT answer that he is thinkin..no other will do. tells too many personal/boring stories
Taking his philosophy of sport class this semester. It's November and I still have no idea what philosophy of sport is. Grading system unclear as well.

go to class!! make sure you do all your essays and TALK IN CLASS!!! He'll give extra credit and recognize you so he'll give u extra credit... exam is hard but it didnt count much toward my grade
He can be a real **** when you don't give him the answer he wants to hear. His exams aren't hard at all if you go to class everyday and do the readings. No make ups on tests.
Good professor, just pay attention and do the reading. Talk in class and get him to notice you, he'll love you the rest of the semester. Pretty udnerstanding guy if you just go to his office and talk to him.
He was an alright teacher, he only likes students that participate. I got an A in this class even though I bombed most of the quizzes and the final exam. All the people I knew in that class got A's as well. 10 PG PAPER.
Dont go to his class late...for awhile he wont say anything, but outta nowhere he'll start complaining or give u a dirty look for the whole class to see. He's really boring, dont take his classes too early or youll fall asleep.
This guy doesn't know what the deal be foo
Very weird class and you talk about the weirdest topics. Try to get someone to share a book with because you dont need it that often and go to the class and if you dont make sure you know someone that does. Do your exams and FOLLOW the directions!!!!!!!!!
I had this dude 4 years ago, so maybe his style changed, but all I had to do was show up, listen, and i'd ace the tests...they were basically common sense. We had some debates as a class. What's with the sandals, though?
He's very knowledgeable about the subject matter and is pretty good at teaching it. You don't have to show up, but you must take his assignments seriously. Very sarcastic, too, but he's a decent guy.
He seems like a nice guy. Knows his stuff. His on line exams are very easy. Read the book because it will help you.
Without any tests or grades during the course of the semester, no one in the class knew where they stood in the class. He made the final and the 15pg paper due 4/29, instead of during exam week. He shouldn't even be allowed to teach!
nice guy
If you ask for help, all you get is sarcasm. Insists on your following the syllabus though he doesnt. Too lazy to even make his own tests and definitely chooses favorites. I wouldn't recommend him.
I HAD NO IDEA IF I WAS GOING TO PASS OR FAIL THIS CLASS. THERE WERE NO CLEAR GUIDLINES AND HE FAVORS THE FEMALES. AVOID TAKING A CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. NO GRADES = CONFUSION.
This guy was joke. Online exams, which consists of 1 question was easy. Copied and Pasted my final paper and got an A. Easiest Phil 101.
I recommend taking professor Herrera if you are going to take Philosophy. We had online exams throughout the year based on class discussions. At the end we had a final which was also based on class discussions. We only class 1 day a week.
wierd grad system. an x amnt of a b c done though survival style grading. ya had to work to get ur wieght up and never knew what u where getting or stood until grades where final
I don't think this guy ever went to school. The students are smarter then he is. His "philosophy" about the world is backwards! Plus, his format in class sucks!! Do not take him!
I'm taking Dr. Herrera's Honors Ways of Knowing class now (bioethics). It's not difficult, but his grading system makes it hard. He assigns a few # of points to each assignment (5 pts total), such that you either get a 4 or a 5, either an A+ or a B- & nothing in between. The topics are fun though...
He's a strange guy. I like the topics, but sometimes his lectures can get boring. Once in a while he can be funny though. The exams consist of 3-4 short essays. Theyre not hard. Many people just don't go to class, but sometimes he says something important and will put it on an exam.
Full of himself, blabbers on for an hour and 15 minutes and doesn't give you any hint as to what he wants on the tests. Class is designed to make you fail. I go to every class, read every chapter, studied every chapter, and I'm still failing.
Chris is a real understanding guy, his classes are extremely interesting and if you keep in contact with him through email and show him you are interested in the class he will grade you fairly. Be sure to always check the online assignment!
Mr Herrera is one of the best teachers i've had. He makes you get involved yourself and never just writes stuff on the board to memorize. I came to this class sure i would hate philosophy, but i may become a minor now. Work hard and you will really learn. Also, Mr. Herrera has funny stories.
Class is almost over and I am kind a sad to see it end. For a freshman level class this class has made me think of so many things. Some topics are dry, but Dr Herrera makes them interesting. I graduate this spring!!! and will remember this class. Assignments were reasonable, but you realy need a PC.
well the topics covered in class are interesting, however, not the prof. it's easy to just fall asleep during it, and the prof. is too vague on what he expects from the students, or on papers as well as the tests, overall he's ok just an arrogant ahole, so i wouldn't really recommend any him to any1
few 3ques exams, online exams, and final. doesnt require much. attendance not required but he puts ques on the exam that is based on the videos he shows and things he talks about in class
Great teacher. Open and accessable, but demands lots of work. Famous question: WHY? Demands a reason for you opinion. Made me think. Great class.
smart and interesting guy. Attendance is not required, hoewver his tests are a pure reflection of what he talks in class so if you sont go you will most likely fail.
I learned one thing from him, philosophy is a useless subject. I have pretty much strait A's except for this piece of crap class. I'm going to get either a B or a C. If you like learning about useful things don't take this class or this professor.
Really pushes you to learn. One of the best teachers I've had. Mr Herrera sometimes focuses too much on the students who are lost and that can get boring. But he is really understanding. I started really behind myself and he took the time to explain everything. Grt class if you work!
Chris seems kinda shy at first but if you talk to him and do the readings he becomes very understanding. He helped me a lot with family issues I was going thru too, and he didn't have to do that. Attendance isn't required, altho the tests come from the lectures so you should go. Good overall class
Not a bad class..no one really seemed to like it but i thought it was interesting..he's kinda monotone & soft spoken..do the online tests & go to class to get lecture notes to do well on tests..attendance not required but needed..some kids dropped out b/c of an essay on atheism..be prepared to think
Eh, he's okay. As long as you go to class, you'll be fine because tests are based on his lectures, not the book. He's a strange guy. He can be very boring, but he does have good intentions.
At first he comes off a little strange, he walks in the room and looks like hes fighting a smile puts his hand up and says hi. N e way, you will be surprised by what you get in his class i missed 2 quizzes and 2 online exams, but i did the final some other quizzes and the 10 pg. paper and got a B-.
I had Prof Herrerra last sem and I'm a freshman. His classes were at first really boring at first until I got used to them. You have to really pay attention in class and read a bit to pass the tests. He gives out a lot of online tests. I ended up getting an A+ in that class. Just listen in clas
very boring guy, have 2 watch boring movies bout twilight zone, go to class, tests based on lectures not book, no tests, only gave 1 midterm and 1 final, don't take attendance, have 2 sit close cuz he mumbles alot
Chris is a good guy.. besides the fact that you "meet online" a lot therefore canceling class for the day, you get to watch The Simpsons and The Twilight Zone for half an hour and he lets you go...There's nothing hard about this class. He is approachable and loves feedback from students. take him!
This guy is the man! For the idiots who don't undertand where he gets his text material from - show up to class once in awhile -it'll get clearer. He'll rarely keep the class the full time anyway. You'll watch a movie, he'll lecture, you'll leave happy ...he's the man
Worst ever!!!!!
I had Herrera his first year at Montclair, so maybe he got better. You need 2 things to be a good professor, knowledge of the subject matter, and the ability to help others understand it. He had neither.
Sure this class is easy, but this guy gives the most boring lectures, and he is monotone to the point of being unbearable...Most people only show up for his class to take the tests and exams, that's what I did and still got an A in the class...Watch out for him on his bad days though, one time he threw the entire class out of the room
EASY EASY EASY! no attendance, boring lectures, and you can miss the tests. as many extra credit points as you want, just gotta do some work.
this guy is not a bad teacher as far as to say that he doesn't comprehend the material. his classes are basically showing up and listening to a lecture where all you have to do is take notes, and then a twilight zone or two. tests are easy if you've taken those notes and no homework. he's a nice guy and helps you out if you e-mail him.
Easy A. Interesting at first but then got boring. You watch a lot of Twilight Zone and a simpson's episode. Take notes youll need it for the midterm and final. They both have 10 questions each and thats all your grade is based on. Tests are easy and pretty much asks for your opinion. No attendance is takin. He gave me an A.
He was a not friendly. Gave quizes that had nothing to do with our readings. DIDN'T EXPLAIN ANYTHING AT ALL. I hated the class, took it during the summer, and I don't even go to MSU. Would never take him again, or a class at this school.
This dude is booooring! It's an easy class, but made me feel like I was wasting my money.. Everything was self taught because his lectures are unbearable... thanks god he didn't take attendance! (i thought the comment about never taking a class at msu again because of hererra was really funny!- i dont blame you!)
easy teacher... 3 exams.. 2 - 20 points each.. the last one is worht 5 points... 31/45 = A... which isn't that hard to get... uses out of book a lot, but listen to his lectures or you'll be lost... never takes attendance but should go to classes or get lost... very helpful if you ask for help
Thought it would be more interesting but his voice made it boring. Grade was based off 3pt quizzes @the beginning of class only, which counted as attendance, but he refused to give it to you if you were late (even if it was 5 minutes). It was ok for him to be late, but didn't care about shuttle issues(when no standing took effect) making you late.
He is extremely boring. He is also not very informative as far as tests and homework go. If you misplace the link to his syllabus he basically thinks you don't take his class seriously. Never mind the job, kids, and house you have to take care of. He is part of the reason that I have decided to leave MSU.
Nice guy, but horribly boring during lectures. I rarely go to class, seeing as there's no attendence. He gives 3 exams, which are take home, and merely a matter of opinion. Do not buy the book. Just be respectful, hand in your exams, and you'll be fine.
Being a philosophy professor, this guy needs to know how to have self control when it comes to students being late. He takes it very personal and makes you have it. Assumes that you don't care and probably holds a grudge. Needs Buddhist philosophy in him. Not very approachable, has strong beliefs which hold him from understanding something beyond.:
Easy. Doesnt take attendance.. Two take home exams... No book nessecary... answers to exams can be found online.. (GOOGLE) I barely went to class and got an A just for handing in my exams..
attendance not mandatory, exam given within the first 5 min of every class on prev. reading assignment, timed, no chance to ask questions first. Not very approachable-comm. thru email, never a "hello", no extra credit available. Final exam not difficult-semi open book, No midterm, some reading assignments not covered in class. Very fair with grades
I might give him another rating if I'm allowed to after class. I will say this, he's lacking in people skills. I think the folks that gave him a high grade were probably people he liked and got along with. The grading system isn't very good either. There should be some sort of requirement for working with undergrad students. That's my op, now.
If you like a class where the only time you have to show up is the first and the last day and still possibly pull an A, than this is the perfect class for you. He does not take attendance, and there are only 3 tests. but ALWAYS CHECK THE SYLABUS!!! and he doesn't use blackboard so remember.
It is mandatory to sit in the front row.He does not allow laptops in his class and is very hard to understand. When I refused to sit in the front he refused to call on me when I raised my hand. I had to speak out just to be heard.I drop the class since I saw he held grudges and was hard to understand.
Take notes, quiz every class, not approachable. Cumlative final exam. NOT an open book like others have stated.
Dr. Herrera is a great professor so far! He makes the material interesting and has a nice voice for lecturing! He seems very helpful. There's a lot of work, but no more than most other 300 level courses and it's interesting.
This guy ruined my interest in philosophy, and showed me the rotten side of the field. There's a difference between being eccentric and being anti-social. He picks people he likes, most of them girls, and proceeds from there. He holds grudges cause he's got a huge persecution complex, and I know cause I used to have one.
HE CANNOT TEACH AND SHOULD QUIT ACADEMICS! For his online logic class, he does not teach anything, just gives you page #s!! He is not helpful, when you email him. He is very sarcastic and thinks that you are stupid if you do not understand it right away, His quizzes are impossible and most of the class failed! NOT GOOD, NO ES BUENO! Nicht gut!
This is by far the worst online course i've taken so far. This guy's quizzes are impossible and he is extremely unorganized.HORRIBLE.I DONT RECOMMEND AT ALL!
To everyone else rating...welcome to college. Prof. Herrera does care about his students, you just have to care about class. He might be a bit anti-social but is completely approachable. Just do the work and you'll do fine. Writing intensive course, don't take if you cannot write. He's good if you're actually in college to learn.
First off I want to say that I am currently taking this professor spring semester of 2010. I'm reading over all of these horrible reviews and am honestly disgusted at what students are saying about him! This is an online class however the guy offers to meet with you at any chance you possibly can. He goes out of HIS WAY to help you in order to tru
Online class however guy offers to meet with you any chance you possibly can. This is college and if you think class is going to be a breeze , well reality check, GROW UP! I had alot going on this semester to so enough excuses and if you want a good grade, than work for it. We all get the grade we truly deserve, so my advice take the class!:) :) :)
Took this class online. The quizzes were a bit difficult, but he did help out when it was apparent that nobody got the material. I never met him in person, so I don't know how he is.
This guy was not very considerate. We got two quizzes the whole semester 10 points 10 questions each, he did not officially announce one of the quizzes and when told it wasn't announced, his response was, "I never said I had to announce it in the syllabus." Think wisely about this one, don't hurt yourself.
The reason most people fins this class hard is because it's a hybrid and this professor's not clear about what he wants. He never tells when you have to meet, or een what his tests are going to be like. Only 2 tests worth 10 pnts each so a lot of pressure. If you don't read and check the assignments often, you're screwed!
Dr. Herrera is one of the best professors I've taken at MSU. His class it challenging so you must come prepared to class. The quizes are very tricky but he is an easy grader. He is ALWAYS willing to provide students w/extra help. Take him!
His recent comments seem quite nice, so maybe he has changed since i've had him.. When I had him last semester it was for a hybrid course. He doesn't really help out at all. He talks about things irrelevant to quizzes. Only two quizzes the whole semster which is what your whole grade is based off of. If you enjoy have your whole grade of 2, 10 ques
I thought this guy was great! He never took attendance, but I went anyway. I found the information to be very interesting. So much that I picked up Philosophy as my minor. Only 2 take home quizzes for the semester. The answers can be found with a little research online. Just use google. An easy A and interesting class... no book needed.
Very easy going and easy grader. He's so laid back it gives cause for concern, but no concern needed. He was always willing to answer any questions, he never took attendance, and was very clear in his explanations. I learned a great deal from him. He is represents what all professors should strive to be.
Great professor! He was helpful and always willing to go over what I didn't understand. He's pretty funny too. I learned alot in his class.
online class- if you don't understand what you're reading email him. he is always willing to help. do the quiz questions and gives back a pdf of answers. 1 test - the final. you have to know how to do the work on your own and learn on your own. overall an interesting class- learned a lot.
The worse online class I ever took.
(summer - online 4 week session) Do not take this class online. Logic is a very difficult subject, made even more difficult when you essentially have to teach yourself at home. Dr. Herrera seemed very willing to help, but I would definitely suggest taking his class on campus.
Be prepared to be treated like an actual adult; he will not remind you to do your homework or when assignments are due. Check online regularly, some don't like this but I think he is a great and interesting professor. I like how he gives us space and is always responds back quickly to emails if one has questions.
This man is too sarcastic for his own good. He tries to sound intellectual and witty but winds up looking the complete opposite..he doesn't seem to really care about his students and most likely won't e-mail you back if you reach out to him, would not recommend him at all, thumbs WAY DOWN
I would not recommend taking this class online. Really hard to understand and you have to learn everything from the book by yourself. He seems funny but I never got to see him in person because he never showed up to class. Supposed to have 3 quizzes and final exam in class but he posted everything online so I got lucky and ended up with an easy A.
Logic isn't the first course I would recommend to be taken online. But the professor seems very laid back funny and always willing to help through email. Quizzes were online with 2 chances each so it is very easy to pass kind of hard to fail in all honesty (ended the semester with an A) but would recommend taking a Logic class in person.
He is one of the best professors I have ever taken at MSU! He is really into you accountable for your education. If he sees that you are serious about learning Philosophy, he will do whatever it takes to help you out. He will also make you a much better writer. Dr. Herrera is funny, intelligent, and an all around great professor.
I took Logic online and it was a pretty easy, honestly. There are 4 quizzes in total, including the final, each of which you get two chances to take (kinda makes it hard to fail). There is a discussion forum as well, but it's not mandatory and it is there to help you. Readings are assigned weekly. I would recommend this class *with this professor*
AWESOME PROFESSOR!!!! took his online Logic class, loved it. Taking him again this semester online for Ethics! HE IS GREAT! take him!- laura o
Inconsistent, dishonest, & unclear: this man is not suited to be a college professor. There is no attendance policy, and the final paper is "100%" of the grade, yet he DOES take into account attendance/other factors. I'm a senior philosophy major with a 3.8 GPA, very active in the dept, & never had this problem with any other professor in the dept.
This class is extremely easy. Only four quizes, 10 questions each. Most of the questions are common sense and some are confusing but the grading makes it super easy. Easy A.
Just a bunch of quizzes and tests. easy if you search answers on google or read the book a little. Discussion board isn't necessary, me and my friend didn't even go on it and passed with A's. just ace the tests and you'll be set. He's not a good guy to go to however, he doesn't help if you have a problem. Uses sarcasm.
He is a rude and sarcastic professor. There is no reason he should teach anyone (Oh wait he didn't teach anyone) At the beginning of the semester he cancelled every single in person class and told us there would be 4 quizzes. He changed the syllabus 3 or 4 times throughout the semester. The 4 quizzes are ridiculously difficult they don't make sense
There are only four 10 Q quizzes (1 being the final exam)the whole course. He doesn't use canvas and uses some stupid forum website for discussions. The quizzes are so hard mostly "which is true" questions & grades you based on comparing to other students, like what?!? Horrible!!! IF YOU CAN AVOID TAKING THIS PROF PLEASE DO!
I took the online class. There were only 4 quizzes, and they were pretty challenging. If you keep up with the discussion forum then they shouldn't be too bad. I didn't open the textbook once and I got an A. He's a pretty sarcastic guy, but his expectations are clear and he's intelligent. The class is straight forward
He posts information about the topics being covered in the four quizzes online. However , the information is not clear and is not always what is on the quiz. To bring up your grade you have to participate in the online discussion's. Not a clear grader! Partition points are given in comparison to other students participation levels. Very Odd
4 online test with 10 questions; each worth 10 points for a grand total of 40 possible points. Basically: 0/40 is F 5/40 is D 6-20 is C 20-30 B and 30-40 is A I got a 4/40, 8/40, 8,40 and 7/40 and passed with a B. Very easy. Don't go to class and it doesn't matter. Just have a group of friends for test and thats it.
He was alright. Whenever you asked him a question, he told you to check out the syllabus. 4 tests, all count as 25% of your grade but honestly easy because they are open book and notes, but of course you need to read. Questions really not that hard, but have to understand the concepts. He also posts once a week so not a demanding class
I do not recommend taking this class online. He just posts which chapters you need to read every week and occasionally a youtube video to go along with it. Only 4 tests so if you mess up on one you have to be careful with the rest, but he did curve my grade. Probably a really good professor in class but ethics online just makes no sense
Didn't really appreciate his lecture style, seemed to expect a certain level of respect when he didn't show much. Extreme work demands, maybe he only wants intelligent students that can keep up with him, but what's the point of that from an educational standpoint. Might be worthwhile as a real world simulation of having a difficult supervisor :)
This guy just uploads pdf's of the textbook and doesn't do much teaching. Even though it is an online class, it was the hardest class this semester. There's online 4 10 question quizzes and they are tough.
He does not provide when the tests are and is not helpful at all. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
We dont talk about the quizzes
Don't take him. His quizzes are pretty much a way for him to keep a level of control over the class. Don't really know why he feels the need to do this. Lectures are pointless and boring. Make sure you establish a good relationship with him, another difficult task. Class and online sylabus designed to accommodate him.
Took PHIL 106 (Logic) Class for the Summer 2017 semester. The course is graded on only 4 quizzes. You must read the notes in order to do well on the quizzes. Overall, very interesting class.
Very easy class. Only have 5 quizzes throughout semester and all the answers are online. Don't really have to do all the readings or use the textbook. However, there's an 8-10 page paper that counts as the final on any topic we covered the semester which is hard because you literally learn nothing and he doesn't help at all.
I took PHIL-102 with him online, it was a pretty easy class, very few assignments, it's easy to get an A if you make sure you do the quizzes on time, and send him a draft of your paper before submitting. It sometimes takes him a while to respond to emails so don't try to email him last minute as he won't respond right away.
Worst professor ever! You can try your hardest on discussions and will still give you a 0 without even giving you any explanation. Do not take him. Online class by the way. Also prepare ahead of time for 8-10 research paper.
Horrible professor. Does not provide any feedback and just responds with copied and pasted responses to any questions. Assignments are either pass or fail with zero margin for potentially improving them. And if the content of the assignment or understanding of the subject is wrong then good luck improving. Thankfully all quiz answers are online.
This class was the easiest A I have ever received. All of the quizzes are online. There are responses due every week, but are not that difficult. Be prepared, however, for a 8-10 page research paper.
Very easy class, there is an 8-10 page research paper but as long as you pick a topic you find interesting it's really not that bad.
The professor lacks sympathy for things out of his control. From an academic standpoint, the material is interesting and he is very knowledgeable about the subject but I would not recommend taking over the summer due to the schedule of 3 and a half weeks and the unforgiving grading system. The quizzes are fairly difficult; you get one attempt.
This man doesn't even use the full class time. Don't show up with a laptop because he'll make you put it away. He doesn't even have a PowerPoint he just talks for 40 minutes and half of the time I didn't know what he was talking about. I took 0 notes because I didn't know what he was talking about.
I took his bioethics class during this pandemic and it was easy except you must do good on all of the random quizzes he assigns because they'll drop your grade. He doesn't really answer emails accordingly. He also handed out A's to everyone in my class even if the assignment was missing. He even created assignments, erased them, and then gave an A.
There's 16 (5-point) quizzes, and an 8-10 page research paper (10 points). That's literally the entire class. Since the quizzes are worth so few points, it can really tank your grade if you do badly on one of them, so take them with caution. I got a 5/5 on all but 1 of them without doing any of the readings, so it's possible to do good. Good luck!
this course was fully online. 16 quizzes that are 5 points each, final paper 8-10 pages. Class was not hard but the readings were long. Overall clear instructions and clear grading.
He doesn't care about attendance, I never attended one class. Just read the assigned work and do the weekly tests. There's one big essay but I recommend to being brain storming prior and its light.
As long as you do the work, you get a 100.
Dr. Herrera is certainly a professor who understands his students. He goes far & beyond to communicate with you through email respectfully. Dr. Herrera encourages you to come out of your comfort zone. If you listen to his advice, you will grow in research, writing, & self. The bottom line is that you work with him, & he will work with you. Amazing!
He was the least responsive professor I've ever had. It's an online class but he did not teach anything, the only things we did were quizzes based on the readings and then a 10 page paper at the end of the semester. I was the one who taught myself the material so really I should be getting the paycheck...
Professor Herrera does not care for his students or their success. Even when communicating with him, he believes that students are only “good” when they do their homework the day it was assigned. He classifies students that aren't “good” that do their homework past the day it was assigned even if it's before the due date.
Horrible professor, the worst at MSU. Don't' take his classes!
