Dr. Holdsworth is a great guy, but as a professor... He puts all his notes on slides, and then just reads from them, and seems extremely nervous in front of a class, fidgets, stutters, its hard to listen to him for a while. His answers to questions are very unclear, I'd go with another prof for this class.
I actually liked this class, all the notes were on slides, which were pretty much just extracted from the text book. All of the information was easily available on blackboard. Not a great speaker who was nervous in class at times, seemed a bit disorganized.
Slides were on blackboard, which basically told you all that you needed to know for exams! Midterms were mc and short answer, which were very straight forward. His notes were really clear and concise, the only bad thing is he is really nervous and fidgets alot in class, so it can be quite "nerve-wrecking" listening to him for a while XD
Yes, he does seem nervous..but all in all a pretty good class. All the notes were on blackboard and exams were open book.
Aww, Prof. Holdsworth is so adorable. He seems to be nervous and akward, but he's obviously passionate for anthropology, and that is definetely conveyed in his lectures. He's extremely thourough, as he uses slides that reaffirm the textbook, but they really take it beyond what you read there. He also shows a lot of very informative films.
Really nice guy, notes are clear (although sometimes slightly disorganized), tests are straightforward. If you read the text and your notes you'll have no problems. Would recommend him.
This guy had interesting lectures, and posts his slides on blackboard. Exams are very easy.
This guy is a really good prof, for a first year, compared to all my other profs, he has been by far the best. He tells you what he's going to test you on, his mid-term/final are fair. He also keeps you interested by asking you questions making it more interactive. He also shows some pretty good movies, definitely a great professor.
Exams were easy and straight to the point! Lecture slides very organized and contained all the information you needed to know for tests. Although he can get nervous in class, keeps students interested and even made up a jeopardy game to help students review, great prof! Take this class!
Good prof, shows some interesting movies. Exams were pretty easy, mc and short answer, deffinatly a good 1st year prof. I would reccomend him.
Holdsworth is a great prof. He uses a lot of pictures and comics to push accross ideas and as long as you read the text and go to class to hear him explain his slides, you should do fine. Tests aren't tricky as he tests you on things he goes over or tells you to read. If you have any problems, he answers them and explains it until you get it.
I took this class during Spring 2007 and it was alright. It's a pretty boring class at times but the exams are very straightforward.
Extremely booooring! And hes a hard marker, that does not know how to explain his marking!
Somehow managed to make an interesting subject, cultural anthropology, extremely boring. Just print the slides off and there you have the entire class. The only interesting part is the movies. If you can stay awake its an all right course. He's obviously a very smart man but needs to take some info off the slides so you have to go to class.
Not a totally enthralling class, but not bad. Three MC tests, not terribly difficult if you do the textbook readings and review class notes. Shows pretty interesting/funny movies that make for easy marks on the test. Puts everything on blackboard and sends out detailed test outlines, but I still liked going to class.
Dr. Holdsworth knows what hes talking about but the class isn't very interesting. The exams are all MC and relatively easy and based on the terms from the course.
The material was pretty interesting, but the class was kind of boring. He gives out the notes online and the textbook and the class are pretty much the same thing so it's easy to get a good mark. Nice guy though.
Puts in a good effort but overall a boring class...not sure how someone can breath that fast for that long and not pass out put in lots of detail on short answer questions
this prof is a nice guy, he knows his stuff, but does not know how to make it exciting, going to class is important you can pick up certain examples that may end up being on the test
I think Holdsworth was a really good prof. He was interested and knowledgable about the subject. He was also very helpful. f you go to class, you can do well on the tests. As a suggestion - try to sit closer to the front. He doesn't use a microphone so if you are at the back, you won't hear anything. Sometimes a bit dull but still good.
Very unorganized & seems nervous sometimes. Doesn't know how to explain what he expects from students on tests and assignments to achieve decent grades.Interesting class-bad professor
A bit too easy at times...
The course was very interesting, but the expectations for it were too high. Attend all classes b/c what he says is mostly what is on the tests. Tests are very easy; just read the textbook & review for an easy GPA booster. Don't bother printing out lecture slides - most of them are pics, if you took notes from what he says in class, you'll be fine.
Good prof. Clear powerpoints. Not the most inspired lecturer but a nice guy.
This proff is realy nice and very helpfull. if you want good mark in this course you do need to work hard. If you read his notes and memrize them and read the textbook you should be fine. nothing is out of his notes or textbook. pay more attention to his notes and watch the movies her shows. The course material is very intersting.
AHH! His lectures = horrible. If u can stay awake, you'll listen to him nervously/frantically/hyperventilatingly ramble on having serious issues getting his words out. PPT notes unorganized, repeating everything several times in dif contexts. Test marking very subjective. Said my answers were correct but lost marks cuz other people wrote more.
I wonder if he actually knows anything about anthropology or not. I think not. Seems that he copies & pastes notes from different places (ie internet) & doesn't read them first. VERY often will find a note on one slide and a note that says the opposite on the next slide. His info makes no sense!
Short answer memory questions? I thought I was at university...how did I suddenly end up back in grade 5?
Good professor that tries hard to engage class. Has good notes on powerpoint. marks essay's quite hard though, expects a lot from students but midterms are easy. Overall a good prof.
Great prof!Take in summer!Lost most marks on short/long answer questions, but marking was fair. ie. did really well on the term paper! If you have poor writing/English skills, THEN the mark will be poor(as in all social science classes).Expansive topics; tons of info, & prof was really knowledgeable.Had great slides & showed excellent films!
Very boring lectures, hard to understand, tests are quite random, so far my worst option.
Great prof and great course. A lot of information and a lot of readings, but he goes through most of them in class anyways. One of the most interesting and applicable courses I've taken in University so far. Very understanding, will raise your grade on papers if you ask nicely and rounds up for final grades. Very interested in his subject area!
Great class, easy marks. 3 hour lectures are usually horrible all around, but he tried to keep it interesting, lots of youtube videos. Played a card game the first day. Def take his class again. Nice guy and approachable.
The professor was very ambiguous, his essay topics were very broad yet he wanted a very narrow response... I have great writing and comprehension, however this served me no purpose in this course. During lectures he would pace on the spot, speak very fast, and was nervous and short of breath. The books are dry and useless, as well.
Not a great prof. Is very nervous, can't easy convert his thoughts into words. He often pauses for a while searching for one word. Tests are fairly easy though.
Nice guy, tried really hard to involve the class and keep the 3 hour lectures interesting. Tests are really straight-forward/expectations are clear. If you put any effort at all into studying you will do well. I didn't find his pacing/breathlessness distracting, but others might. Decent class, good prof. Would take him again.
NIce guy, but presentation of material is quite dry and boring. If you want to learn a lot, don't take a class with him. Tests are quite easy though - if you do your work you'll definitely do well.
I did not enjoy this class at all. its offensive at times, but mostly just boring. uses 80 ppt slides sometimes for one chapter.
Useless. Holdsworth is stuttering nervous mess. Midterms and Final are not based on what you know, but how fast you can write your essay in the 50min class. Don't waste your time by going to class. Just read the ppt slides and the textbook.
Terrible, way too nervous of a public speaker to teach. A lot of his lecture is lost in a stuttering mess. Things he talks about are nowhere to be found on midterms/finals. Will be avoiding from now on.
He stutters and is incredibly nervous, its painful to watch him try and give a lecture. His power point slides can sometimes reach over 100 slides. If you want an easy though take this class, his tests are so easy, its an easy A.
Yeah, the guys stutters a little bit, obviously he's not Barack Obama. But he's a good guy, runs an interesting class, and cares about students, which is more than can be said for a lot of profs at this university. big ups
Not the most voluble of professors. Lectures are useless and so are his PowerPoints. He'll speak common sense on a topic regarding business culture but, when it comes to the essays his expectations are specific and sometimes esoteric. The textbooks are as vague as he is so don't waste your money on them.
incredibly dull. nice enough guy but tends to devalue students ideas. hard to sit through.
Incredibly boring, marks really hard on essay style tests. TA had a big chip on his shoulder.
Chris cares about students, is approachable, and is overall a good prof. I recommend ANTH303 for anyone. It is pretty easy, and it is not hard to get a good mark. Midterms and Final were formatted "Seven essay questions, choose one" which appeals to all different learning types. More courses at uni should be like this. Very fair and somewhat fun
Definitely and interesting class, lots of slides and text pages to read but not overly hard. The written test questions were hard, but ended up being marked very easily. Prof is a very nice man who has a lot of interesting things to say
This class was interesting, good slides - information very clear! Easy to study for, a GPA booster for sure! Prof is very nice.
Holdsworth is definitely a nice guy, but his lectures can be pretty dull at times. Midterms and final were pretty easy, and as long as you read the textbook, you're looking at a good GPA booster.
Nice prof, mumbles a bit, and has a tendency to trail off. TA was a complete TOOL, brutal marker! gave me a D on the midterm and when I asked Chris to re read it, he agreed the mark was way too low and changed it to a B plus. Relatively easy class, good discussion.
Holdsworth is a really nice prof. He is approachable and friendly. His tests are fair. I would definitely reccommend him!
Lectures are really dull. He uses PowerPoints but the majority are just filled with pictures. He is nice and willing to help. He can be kind of mumbley at times. The class content is good but tends to be delivered in a boring way.
I really like Chris. He's very real, and I am always delighted to have him as a prof. I really love his tests, as he requires one drawing on personal experience and opinion.
Good prof. He can be a bit boring in lecture but if you participate and ask questions he gets good discussions going. The readings are very interesting, he has some online, the majority from the textbook. Tests are all essays, you need to read the material and be able to comment on it to do well. I would take a course from him again.
Chris was an average man, he delivers lectures in an orderly fashion using powerpoint slides. Most of them containing pictures, some words, although I would recommend taking notes for each slide. He's actually quite passionate about the subject but he lacks enthusiasm to engage the class. His tests are actually fair and simple. Not a bad class.
He is a really nice guy. Really helpful and wants his students to do well. His lectures are pretty boring half the time but you watch some movies and youtube videos on the topics thats good. His tests were all essays. I didnt like them too much but the questions are pretty general. Not a bad class.
Pretty interesting class in my opinion, definitely have to go for the videos he shows though as questions are put on the midterms and final about them (super easy though if you attended class). Really nice guy, wants his students to do well. Easy midterms, I didn't go to class and ended up with A- since final was a bit trickier than I thought.
Harder class then expected but very interesting. Essay style exams require alot of details with vague questions, suggest speaking to him outside of class to find out what he's looking for. Excepted something specific with the essay responses and still haven't figured out what exactly he is looking for.
Took consumer behavior at the university of lethbridge Calgary campus over the summer: gives easy grades to the assignments, but completely unwavering when itcomes to appealing for marks on a test, even when you have a valid argument, ppt slides are full of pictures and uses many videos to supplement, somewhat muffled speaking, text not required.
Fairly interesting prof and material and a nice guy. Made detailed PowerPoints of every lecture, so going to class was not really necessary (except to see films, which were on the exams). 2 midterms and a final, all easy if you studied PowerPoints, did readings, and saw the films. Requires some effort, but overall pretty easy class.
He posts all of the lecture notes and tries to facilitate discussion which makes the class interesting. Seems to mark fairly easily, and mid-terms are not very difficult.
He is a great prof, very approachable and helpful. Simple, straightforward class.
Really nice guy, but carries himself with a seemingly nervous demeanor which detracts from his lecturing ability. All PPTs are posted, but offend the principle of minimal text on slides. Easy exams, but will not grant 100% no matter what. Textbook is supplemental. Would recommend for an east intercultural requirement slot to fill.
Easiest class in uni - prof made it very straight forward. Simple, fair tests, organized notes and lecture. Friendly and will defs give 100 if you deserve it - easier marker and will change written question marks if you got it partially right and talk to him.
Straight forward class, fair tests. Organized notes but some ppt slides are just pictures with the concept so going to class is neccesary - textbook not so heavily relied on, but helps a lot. Dedicated prof.
take it, it's pretty interesting. very fair grading
I loved this class. Got over 90% on every exam, but studied at least 3 weeks prior to every test. Attending class helps a lot. Overall, one of my favourite classes thus far!
The class material was quite interesting, and Chris clearly showed that he was passionate about the subject. He made an effort to improve and change his slides. The lectures can get dry sometimes, but he tries to keep things interesting by using entertaining videos. The tests were not overly difficult - put in some time to study.
This was such an easy course.. His exams are essay style and he tells you what subjects will be on the exam so it's super easy to prepare. Nice guy but super boring lectures.. Most people didn't go..
This class was terribly boring and he is absolutely ridiculous. He stutters and his lectures were super hard to follow. If and when I went to class, I could not pay attention. Not worth the time!
Great prof, once you learn his marking and testing style, you are golden. Class requires paying attention, and if you do that, you will do well. Recommended.
Interesting class, liked the variety of lectures/fillms! OVerall good prof, sometimes kind of boring but...he tries! Tests were pretty easy if you read textbook and attended the movies!!
Chris is a very nice guy so if you see him to review your midterm, he can boost up your mark a bit. Nothing too boring in this class, found a lot of things interesting. Easy class
Chris is an awesome professor. He doesn't attempt to purposefully mess up students on his exams and most of his questions are directly from the powerpoint slides. He stutters a lot, but he does try to involve his students in discussion. I'd highly recommend this course with him.
Chris is great. All his exams are essay style for this class. But I've never had any problems with his marking. I got over 90 on every exam and didn't study that much prior to exams; just pay attention in class and you'll do fine.
Dr. Holdsworth is amazing. He knows what he is talking about and tries his best to make the material interesting! His tests are straight forward. If you study the his notes and use his notes as a guide for the textbook its easy! He replies to emails very quick as well. I would highly recommend anyone to take any of his classes!
There is a difference between a good prof and an easy class. The class itself is a joke. Did not go to classes, did not read the textbook, did not study prior to exams and still got an A. The professor is a terrible speaker and the powerpoint slides are just a mess. Take for an easy A, but don't expect to learn anything...
Good Proffesor, good class, fair and just all around worth taking.
Chris is great, the class is a little bit boring, i slept most of the time during the class and i still got an A. The content is enlightening as it equips you on how to deal with people from different cultures during business negotiation
He's one of the nicest profs in the anthropology department. Although, a bit too nice; at the senior-level, all exams should be essay-style; multiple choice is only for people who don't know how to write or can't write. He's a really nice guy and he's always willing to help you out if you go to his office.
Chris is a decent professor. He's friendly, concise, and passionate. Pretty easy class.
A GREAT guy. I've taken many of his classes. He's a little shy, and not super engaging, but always willing to offer help. He has changed his exam style: the final consisted of MC, SA, and an essay... required a lot of studying. BUT he's very knowlegable and is kind enough to post all his lecture notes online, so it's easy to keep up. I like him!
This class is really boring, the tests are fairly easy if you memorize his power points but overall not enjoyable.
Great teacher, really nice and knows what he is talking about. Tests are designed to have an average hovering around a B. Overall was a great class, and I`d take a course with him again in a heartbeat.
This class was alright. Although a little mundane at times, grading was very fair. Chris is also willing to help you out or give you an extension if you need it.
He is a very nice guy, but i found the class extremely hard because his lectures and powerpoints were very disorganized and confusing.
He's a really nice guy, he pretty much just reads off the power points and they are all posted anyways, the only real point in attending class is for the films. Tests are easy if you study the text and the powerpoints. Awful class though, terribly boring subject matter.
Nice prof, fair marker, tests are fine if you study a bit. Fairly easy material. He's really approachable, though a little distant. Would like him a lot more if he didn't hate Christmas :P
Interesting class! Holdsworth is very nice but monotone. Lots of information but the class wasn't too hard.
Easy A if you study (memorize bullet point from powerpoints and skim through the textbook). He marks easy but is sometimes boring so bring coffee to class!
Dr. Holdsworth is a good prof and ANTH 303 is a great course. Most of the test material comes from lecture. Tests are fair - his MC questions can sometimes be confusing but the short answer helps make up for it. Highly recommended.
Ok prof and very approachable. He is very clear in his emails and sends additional aid. Course was not too hard but the lecture wasn't as engaging. Majority of the test came from lectures and slides. Textbook was rarely used with "selected" pages only, which also appeared on the tests. You watch movies in class too :)
He is a very helpful person who always listen to you when you are in need. He is a great prof .Highly recommend.
First midterm was very hard (54% average) - way too much (trivia) info from the textbooks. Made the next midterm easier, but still has a huge focus on trivia-like questions. I would avoid him for this class... Or... just avoid this class.
I love every class I take with Prof. Holdsworth, he is a good lecturer and if you pay attention and take a class with him, it is really not hard to predict what will be asked on the midterms. Do your readings and listen in lectures and you will get an A. Tests are very fair.
I have taken several classes with him before and they have been quite good, this class on the other hand is poorly done. He packs information onto the lecture slides and doesn't present contemporary Aboriginal issues even though that is the name of the class. I heard indigenous studies is a much better option if you are interested in this subject
Good prof, tests are fair and if you study there is no reason why you can't get an A. Uses plenty of videos to make subject interesting. Top Hat I'd basically a free 100 on 10% of the class. Highly Recommend this class and prof.
Decent enough prof. Lectures can drag on a little but it's interesting material. Tophat questions are easy marks and the tests are definitely fair. No reason not to get an A in this class even without going to most lectures.
Chris is a great professor! You can tell he really enjoys what he's teaching and even though the class had a few hundred students, he kept it engaging and fun. His tests are fair and if you study, you will definitely 1do great. No surprises on the exams and overall a great class to take as an elective.
Chris is a good prof, not the most exciting to listen to but very intelligent and nice. His exam questions come directly from the slides so no surprises on the tests. Assigns a lot of reading but as long as you understand the main ideas of the reading, you are good as far as the exams go
Chris made this already boring course an absolute struggle to get through. His tests are straight from the power point slides but he makes the class an absolute drag. He's a nice guy but soo boring
Probably the greatest prof on campus. Very clear, knows his stuff, super approachable. You cant do bad in this class.
Great prof and the class was definitely more on the easy side. That being said, it is important to attend class as it really clarifies his lecture slides. He does test from the textbook but the majority of the questions are from the lecture. If you put in a moderate amount of effort you will be looking at the A-range. Very friendly guy too.
Good guy, all slides posted online day before class. Going to class makes the difference between an A or a C+. Lots of questions on exam come from topics clearly talked about in class. Good guy, would take another class with him in a heartbeat.
Holdsworth is an awesome prof. Interesting material, very clear expectations- he sends out detailed emails explaining what to study for each midterm. Definitely need to go to class, fair tests - study lecture slides and skim the textbooks and you should be able to get an A.
This course is a breeze. The material is easy, yet interesting. If you study his lecture material and memorize the bullet points in his slides you will do well. I used the textbook only for the first midterm. I highly recommend this course.
Oh my goodness, this class is a total nightmare. Aside from the Tophat questions to gauge participation, going to class is not necessary - study from his 1,000,000 slides and you'll get an A. Makes students feel like their answers to in-class discussion questions are wrong, every time. Anyone who likes this prof has clearly not had a good teacher.
GPA booster!! highly recommend! All you have to do is study his slides! reading a textbook is helpful as well. You have to go to his lectures since he is using Top Hat for participation marks
Super easy class! He makes his tests very fair and I found them to be pretty simple. He is very interested in what he teaches but most questions on the exams were from the slides, textbook and movies.
Maybe its the 3 hour classes, but always halfway through the class i would fall asleep, but he is quite fair, explains the topic well and overall is an excellent teacher. Although sometimes the ramblings about witchcraft grew somewhat tiresome. If you want a good grade, go to that class and take notes. A lot of the test material is based on class.
This class is awesome. You need to do the readings but you will sure make an A if you do them and go to class as well. Most of the things you need to know are from his slides. He has tophat questions but they are not hard. This class is a GPA booster. I made an A on this class. This guy should totally be nominated for a teaching excellence award
Course was relatively easy. Make sure to attend for TopHat questions for participation marks (10%). He was the most painful teacher to listen to. Talked quietly, didn't finish his thoughts/sentences, and just mumbled the whole time. Wasn't very fun to sit through. Lots of questions of tests, but all from the powerpoints.
Maybe is the 3 hours class but I really want to sleep by the first break. Can't really hear what he says and he never finish his thoughts; always going about his trips making me SOO confused to what is he talking about!
He makes you read.. a lot. Be prepared to do readings for the tests as he will ask you on them. This course is somewhat of a shamble; he throws certain topics in as he pleases and the description of "Magic and Witchcraft" are barely touched upon. He is easy and you don't need to study much. A's are 90. He is much better at 213.
Holy moly. Great prof but a bit unrealistic when it comes to the amount of content he expects you to know, especially for the final. I'm in my 5th year and have never had a class with so much material to know for the final. Awesome dude though!
Dr Holdsworth lectures about interesting religions and cults (Jonestown, Witch hunts etc). He tries to keep topics relevant with current news stories and promotes class discussion. However, his multiple choice questions can sometimes be unclear; the written portion of his exams are easy to ace though. 100 pagesweek of readings directly tested on.
This class sounding really interesting but was far from it. A lot of the readings are old and outdated. He says um and ah a lot when speaking so I found it difficult to listen. He does give clear expectations for the tests though. Uses top hat.
Interesting and humorous lectures. Clear-cut on grading expectations for exams. Attending lectures is key for earning easy participation marks via Top Hat system.
I love this guy! He is really quiet so try to sit at the front of the class, but he was such a nice guy I couldn't dislike the class. The midterms were fairly easy, just review his powerpoints and you will be fine. Reading the textbook wasn't really crucial, he just got a lot of his info on the powerpoints from the text. Would def take again!
Taking Contemporary Aboriginal Issues with him was not a great experience. Too objective in his expression of the issues facing Aboriginal peoples. A lot of the problems facing Aboriginals were presented as fault of their own not the historical and continuing issues of prejudice. He is nice but doesn't know enough about Aboriginal peoples.
Attendance not mandatory to ace the exam (power points and readings have all the needed information), however you have to answer his Tophat questions for participation. Easy A, don't stress too much about the readings, since he only uses 1 or 2 questions from them. Short answer portion is even easier than his MC section. Take this class
Awesome proff, everything you need to know is on his slides. Minimum amount of reading and he only tests you on the slides and "overlapping" matrerial as in the book. He is a super nice guy too always there to help you and answer your questions. I missed a couple of his top hat questions and talked to him and he gave me the marks. would take again!
Great class. Makes everything clear. Minimal readings. Some participation required, but good prof overall.
Holdsworth is amazing. He also teaches Anthropology of Religion, Business Anthro, and he used to do intro to sociocultural. He's ridiculously friendly, respects students, and is a fairly lax marker so long as you don't treat the class like a joke. Show him respect, go to classes, and it'll be impossible to do poorly.
Great teacher, funny in class. 1010 Will recommend. Just pay attention to his power-points and what he goes over in class and you will do great
Avoid this class if you want a good grade, He is a horrible prof who mumbles every second word. Tests are difficult and he asks questions from the textbook readings which are long. I have a 3.8 GPA and I found this class tough...
I think he was a great prof. Most of his material was in his lecture slides already so you didn't have to take down as many notes. He uses Top Hat questions so attendance is required. He has textbook readings but I usually don't get around to reading all of them but I still managed to get mid 90s on all his tests. Would take his class again.
He is one of the good profs. He will take the time to explain things and tells you everything you need to study for the exams, which is quite a lot if you want to do well. If you want to get an A, have to do all the readings. If you are satisfied with a B, you can get by with thoroughly studying the lecture slides. Really fair grader. Recommended!
This class is easy and his exams are straight off the lecture slides. I didn't buy the recommended books for this course and still managed to do very well on the tests. He is very reasonable when you have any concerns regarding your grades! Like any other class you obviously need to study but the material is very easy to understand ! :)
Very interesting class and I loved the in-class discussions. All testable material is on his lecture slides. Be prepared to read- the textbook is essential to passing exams, but I found the chapters very interesting and easy to read! First 2 midterms are fair, and the final was easy-peesy (got 92% on it). Chris also uses Top Hat- easy extra credit!
I found this class a little boring! The professor is nice, but the way he reads through his notes makes the class hard to sit through without zoning out. Tests are super fair, and he is a very nice man. I thought this class would be more interesting though!
Top hat questions, so attend class. Great teacher, really cares about his students and is passionate about what he's teaching. Would rather you actually learn about the course than focus just on giving tests. Has MC and written on his midterms, but they're easy. Definitely would take again!
Not the most interesting class I've ever taken and the fact that it was a 3-hour night class didn't help. However, tests are straight forward and if you study its a fairly easy A. Uses TopHat which is an easy 10%, but you'll have to be in class.
The worst prof I have had in my 3 years of university. His presentation skills are absolutely terrible and his notes are dreadful.
He is an Oxford graduate and has tons of enthusiasm when it comes to Anth, however his lectures are long and tiring but also engaging and interesting. He is very helpful although his slides are not arranged in an orderly fashion. Going to class is really not mandatory to understand but for top hat scores it is.
He would start talking about something and halfway through the sentence he would start another sentence. I didn't go to the lectures because they were way too boring. I did the TopHat questions from home, he usually asked them at the same times each lecture. Midterms were really easy. Take if you want a class where you don't have to put in work.
This was probably the easiest class I have ever taken. The lectures are a bit dry, but Dr. Holdsworth is a gem of a person. All you have to do in order to pass the class is memorize the slides.
He has a great sense of humour and picks lots of really interesting topics for lecture. Posts notes online so easier to just write down what he says then go back and look at slides later. Seems like a lot of reading, but you can get away without reading most of it. No paper and all tests were really fair. Great prof! would take another class.
Enjoyed my class with Chris. Got lucky that my class participated in the discussion. Rare class where you wonder where the time flew. Lots of interesting topics, some not but still enjoyable. Top hat questions were worth 10% but easy to do, you just need to show up to every class and pay attention. Readings solidified concepts discussed in class.
My experience: Chris cares about his students and wants the post-secondary experience to be positive - which it is, if you are in his class. He treats his students with respect and is interested in hearing what students have to say. He's a down-to-earth guy who doesn't need to be called "Doctor" or even "Mr"; he told us to just call him "Chris".
The worst prof at the university. Terrible lecturer, exams are confusing. Do no take this class
I found the lectures for this class kind of dry, and didn't find Dr. Holdsworth very engaging. That being said, the material itself is interesting, and the class is insanely easy. There are a lot of textbook readings, but I got away without doing them for most of the exams. There is also tophat participation for easy marks. Would recommend.
Chris is great! He's well educated and knowledgeable in Aboriginal studies. He's really nice and easy to talk to. Keeping up with the readings are important, so get your texts and start reading! Some of his slides can be a bit text heavy and sometimes he can get off track. Do the readings you'll know exactly what he's talking about.
A very down to earth prof. He does not have a big ego unlike the many other profs. Open to answer questions and help students. I learned a lot in his class. And exams are fair.
I didn't like Chris for the first few classes, but he ended up getting better. He is pretty boring and says um a lot but he really tries to make it engaging. He's really nice and his tests are easy once you get to know his style (you might bomb #1), meaning memorize lists and people. He looks for around 4 points per question so keep it in mind!
very easy class if you attend lectures and take notes. Suppose to do readings but i found it was not really necessary. Two midterms and a take home final. He outlines exactly what will be covered on exam. He is also just a really nice guy and clearly cares about his students doing well. great sense of humour and makes interesting content.
I found Chris to be very understanding. The first midterm was a bit difficult but he remarked them and tried to give everyone more points due the low class average. He also marked the final papers very reasonably. Probably the only class I didn't dread attending by the end of the semester.
3 hour long class from 6-9 pm. The midterms were alright but required a ton of reading. I do NOT recommend this class as a GPA booster because there is a ton of reading and some questions were a little too specific.
Great prof Go to class and do the readings. He's great and I really enjoyed his class
You need to put in some work to see results, but Chris sends out exactly what is going to be on the exam about a week in advance for you to review. The written is super easy if you memorize lists and whats on the powerpoint. His lectures are a little dry, but he does a good job making it as exciting as possible with lots of videos and examples.
He's a terrible prof. The lectures are incredibly dry and he rambles a lot. The powerpoint presentations are ridiculously content heavy and long. I don't understand why people are giving him good reviews on here because he is not a good prof. This is the 3rd time taking his class because it was for degree major but if you can avoid him, do it.
This class for me was the epitome of take the class not to learn but to get a good grade and thats what is happening. Late Tuesday night lectures, super dry, Chris does nothing but read off his slides and monologue - no point in going to class. Tests are easy though and he grades them fast. Hes a good guy but I wish I took something else.
Nice prof, really boring class. The class is 100% memorization and 0% learning. Print the slides off and study them carefully. Read the textbook if you want to get an A, without it you'll probably have to settle for A-. Class is definitely optional, most ppl stopped going after the first midterm once they realized what the tests were like (fair)
His lectures are dry. Powerpoints are content heavy. Wants you to memorize instead of learning. Would not recommend. He's a decent person but a bad professor.
Lots of memorization, would not recommend
He is a very nice guy and you can tell he cares about his students. He does have content heavy lectures and there is A LOT of notes to read over for exams (not sure which of the material is important) but his tests are pretty fair in my opinion. He's not the greatest teacher and he should settle down on the amount of written words in his lectures.
I think he's great! I enjoyed his class very much- interesting material and really great prof.
Dr. H chooses interesting topics to discuss and he provides a "study guide" for the test; usually a list of which readings, films, and lectures to review. Overall a solid prof.
ANTH 303 with Chris is the definition of a class that you take to get a good grade, and get absolutely nothing out of it. Atendence is not mandatory AT ALL. The slides and the textbook are all you need for the tests, Chris adds nothing to them during his lectures. I showed up to the final extremely enibriated and got above 90. Easiest A at UofC.
Great professor. Readings from book are essential, lectures are very interesting but he posts detailed slides, so if you miss a class you will be able to recover. Had interesting things to speak about, tried to create dialogue. My only issue was the grading was only exams. Would have liked a more creative project with the coarse.
Chris genuinely cared about his students and was an excellent prof. However, this course was a ton of work/memorization because you couldn't be quite sure what was going to show up on the exam. Some of the questions were very specific making his multiple choice hard. Nonetheless, the written portion of the exams was extremely easy.
Lectures were boring as they were 3 hours long. Tests were somewhat fair. If you just want a B in this course, then just study the class slides. An A in this course actually requires doing all the assigned readings.
The lectures are fun to listen to but not always for note taking. Very interesting class (ANTH 363). Prof sometimes mumbles or speaks too fast which is frustrating. Exams are spelled out very clearly so you know what to study beforehand.
Defs did not find this class to be a piece of cake like evryone else. Required alot of memorization. Lectures were kinda dry. Hes a pretty good guy, gave plenty of extra marks on exams. I felt like i studied pretty hard but some questions on the exams were no where on the in-class notes so i guess read the textbook if you wanna do really well.
Chris is such a sweetheart. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to excel. His lectures are a bit dry but they are very informative and he clearly knows his stuff! Also very handsome ;) overall one of the best profs i had.
His lectures are a little dry but are helpful to attend. Movies are tested on so don't skip those days and do the practice multiple choice as the same questions show up on exams.
Dr. Holdsworth was a little dry, and his attempts to get the class involved were sometimes lackluster. His tests are based on a small sample of a large amount of information, so I suggest you dedicate more time to studying than you think you need to. He's genuinely a nice guy, I only wish it was more clear what would appear on the tests.
i LOVE HIM HES SO GOOD AND SO SMART AND SO ENLIGHTENING AND SO SWEET
His lectures are so wishy washy and hard to focus in. I just don't get it cause you would think this is an interesting class but the way he presents lacks clarity and structure. Plus the text was expensive and not used at all!
The material was dry at some times. He tested mainly from the lectures, and some textbook material. He is very clear about the grading for exams, and how he wants the short answers answered. He was genuinely great too.
Chris is a really understanding and fair prof. He tries to incorporate real world examples when describing concepts and this helps with student understanding. Pay attention in class and READ the textbook if you want more than a B. The textbook readings are pretty interesting if you are into this topic. Tests are graded fairly. Written is easier.
He tries to make lectures fun and uses real world examples to demonstrate his point. Sometimes he rambles on and moves through the slides fast. There are lots of slides per lecture, remember the diagrams he puts emphasis on as they'll be on the tests. Memorize the slides and skim through the book if you need more help. Book is basically optional.
Chris is a nice guy but this class was just ridiculously boring. I'm sure trying to make history of anthropology enjoyable would be difficult to anyone but Chris' monotone voice and unorganized slides did not help. Marks hard as both midterms and the final are 50% written, and you need to be able to connect material. NOT an easy A option!
Dr. Holdsworth is a very caring Prof and his exams are really fair. If you do the readings and attend the lectures you can easily get an A in his class.
Goes through slides really fast and the slides generally have too much information on them- bring a laptop! Lectures are a bit dry and he uncomfortable talking about things such as same-sec marriage and gender vs sex but overall a good prof. Grades are pretty fair but I wouldnt bother with the textbook.
His lectures are very dry however, he does his best. He's a super nice guy and is very approachable however, his tests are insanely easy so you really don't need to attend the lectures to pass them. If you're looking for an easy junior option, ANTH 203 with chris is the way to go.
His lectures are particularly dry, but the content taught is interesting and informative. The man is super nice and no hate to him but his lectures are a bit boring. You don't have to attend lectures, but HAVE to read the textbook to prep for tests, otherwise youll fail. Easy class, and final isnt cumulative :)
Chris is a really nice guy and the course was a lot more interesting than I thought. DO read the textbook chapters because his exams are mostly like 90% textbook, 10% lecture. Will remove questions if not enough people get them right and if you go look at your written he might change his mind and give extra marks. Overall a fun, easy option!
Chris is a decent prof. His lectures are dry but he gives you the necessary info to do well on the exams. The midterms and final were super easy but there was a TON of unnecessary reading. Like literally giving you a bunch of articles to read for only one to pop up on the exam.
Chris was an extremely nice man. However, lectures were boring and not mandatory because he reads off the slides. Not a gpa booster as our class average for this course was 74.9. Read the textbook for sure because it helps greatly with the exams. For the written part of exams, the more detail you have the better. Just memorize slides & textbook
AMAZING PROF. He is such a caring and nice individual. The class is very easy, you obviously have to read his textbook (at times it's a long read) but the stuff in there is interesting and easy to remember. The multiple choice section of his tests have bonus questions and you get a few written to choose from plus his tests are non-cumulative.
Lectures are content heavy, and reading the textbook is a must! The tests are made up of a multiple choice and a written section, so when you are studying don't just mindlessly memorize - know how to apply the concepts especially in the written section. Use your judgement when taking notes since there is a lot of info on slides. Chris, you da MVP!!
Honestly his lectures were so dry, and he is quite quiet but his tests are easy if you read through his slides, the textbook and watch the videos he reviewed in class
Chris is one of my favourite profs. He hasnt taught this in a long time so he was a bit uncomfortable in the lectures. He will do anything he can to help you succeed, and if you try hard he is willing to help. Reading the textbooks really helps with the midterms. Is accessible outside of class and likes participation.
Dr. Holdsworth is the best prof I have ever had. He is really caring and knowledgeable. I have taken ANTH 203 and currently taking 363. His exams are fair if you do the readings and study his notes. His exams consist of 50% mc and 50% written which I really like. Multiple choice is mostly from the readings and while written is from the notes.
Fairly straightforward professor. Go to class, read the slideshows he posts to study, and the readings he suggests and you'll be good to go. Just have to attend for the Tophat questions.
Chris is a nice guy. Lectures are clear but not taught with much passion for the topic. If you studied tests were pretty easy and Tophat participation was a great grade booster!
I thought I wouldn't like Holdsworth because of how he lectures without a mic but eventually, I got used to his quieter voice. 363 is a lowkey class with fun topics (i.e. suicide cults) and I liked it. Exams are straightforward, sometimes mc is a repeat of tophat q's which is nice. But he makes you read ALOT of articles so watch out for that
Really dry boring prof.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A GPA BOOSTER. The questions on the exam are so specific. You do not need to go to class. Questions are very textbook heavy. There is also a written portion which he marks very hard. Make yourself a favour and do not take this class.
Professor Holdsworth makes the material interesting by using lots of examples. The lectures are focused on the practical aspects of anthropology, while adding enough theory to provide a good framework for understanding what he is discussing.
Professor Holdsworth has been my favourite professor so Far. He is very understanding and extremely reasonable with his expectations he gives you a detailed outline of what will be on each test and even provides study worksheets and a top hat with practice questions. His lectures are interesting however you can just read the textbook and do great
Literally amazing professor! He's so kind, so understanding and a real gem. He's very fair, replies to his emails and helps out in any way he can. Definitely recommend his classes!!
The quality of course content is embarrassing for a university level course and some of the content he taught was actually incorrect or extremely outdated. He is nice enough and seems to care but failed to adapt to an online platform as his lecture slides and tapings were boring and vague. I do not recommend taking this course online. Waste of $$.
there were a couple of assignments and a few tests that evenly distributed the grades across a bunch of smaller things. I was in one of the first classes he taught online (yes it was a bit of a mess) but he responded to everyone's concerns and I'm sure he will be updating the curriculum to be better online. He is a bit boring but a good prof.
Really nice prof. Wants you to succeed and understanding.
This was one of my favourite courses this year. Dr. Holdsworth is passionate and knowledgeable about the subject and it shows! His lectures are put together well, and use a ton of case studies/examples to better explain the topics. Exams weren't too hard, but participation in group discussions was required.
His class is easy and very straightforward. All you have to do is watch his lectures and that is enough to do well in this class.
ANTH 303- a great class to take as a rather easy elective. The content is straightforward and his tests are fair. Chris is a great prof. He is very nice and considerate towards his students. This class isn't exactly exciting 100% of the time but is definitely thought-provoking. Chris makes it easy to get a good grade in the class if you try.
Maybe just not a fan of the course material but the class was pretty boring. Prof has a decent lecture style but kinda seems sloppy and thrown together. Exams haven't been the easiest but not terribly difficult. Textbook is necessary as lectures do not adequately cover everything.
Dr. Holdsworth is a very passionate and knowledgeable professor. The tests are beyond easy and can be done with just a quick textbook read, or watch the lectures (he wrote the textbook so it follows closely), and you'll get a guaranteed A+. Also, a super wholesome dude
his lectures are dry and boring, although he is a very nice professor, his classes are lecture-heavy. The only thing is he doesn't stop talking lol. it's also very exam-heavy, he said he would test on the concepts but ended up testing a lot of the details. would not take It again.
Doctor Holdsworth was a pleasure to have during this semester. There were some points, however, where the lectures did get dry, and some where he went by super quickly, but it was fine otherwise. He likes to test you on details and applications of concepts, so don't just memorize, try to understand the material! Overall, the class wasn't too bad.
Overall a good professor but the exams are textbook heavy. He cares about the class he teaches and provides study guides and practice questions. Only complaint is tht some topics he discusses seem to be a bit outdated.
Professor Holdsworth was an awesome proff and made online learning fun and engaging. You could tell he cared deeply and is very passionate about what he teaches. He is a great guy overall. The class was very test heavy, with 2 midterms and a final. Tests were on the harder side as they were very interpretive. Regardless, would take again.
Dr. Holdsworth is a nice guy who's very good at getting back to emails but his lectures weren't my favourite. Test questions mostly ask about general concepts, you're only marked on 3 tests and the textbook is mandatory for success in this class as half of my notes came from there. Try not to get bogged down, there's a lot of content in this class.
The material was extremely boring and could have been presented on a better online format. This prof is not caring like others say, he wont bump up your grades even if your really close to the next letter grade(during a pandemic wow). Do yourself a favor and find another professor to teach you this subject.
I think I love him
graded by 3 tests, tests aren't too difficult, but if you dont read the textbook you will probably struggle. So read it. The course doesnt require too much time to be put into it.
His lectures are a bit boring, I don't recommend an evening class with him. Tests are relatively easy and are based on the lectures and readings.
LOVE Chris, he is so funny and the class material is very interesting. The midterms are exactly based on the PowerPoint slides and some readings. If you show up to class and are engaged you'll do amazing or if you rarely show up and just study the slides you can also do well
I love professor Holdsworth. His lectures are easy to understand and tests are fair! You should take this course with him if you need a GPA booster!
Holdsworth just read off his lecture slides and showed (in my opinion) unnecessary videos in class. The classes weren't mandatory to attend because his PowerPoints were quite detailed. There were too many readings and the exam would have maybe 1 question for 3 readings that say the same thing.
Prof is very passionate with the topic material. He was very kind and did push back due dates when one of the students asked for it. Very wordy slides but tests were easy! Would def take a class with him again
Dr. Holdsworth is a very knowledgeable and caring professor. When the class didn't do well on the 1st midterm, he made the next test a little easier and he also pushed back due dates for assignments. Lectures can be a bit dry and slides are content heavy but the tests were straightforward and easy to do well on if you study.
he is very easy to talk to and is very understanding.
Dr. Holdsworth was really kind and understanding, his powerpoints were detailed enough to the point that i never did any readings. This is a nice class to take if you have a heavy course schedule, as it is only 3 midterms + final. the midterms had written portions, worth 50%, but the notes prepared you well for them. 9/10
Made Anth 303 interesting to learn about, as he's very sweet and genuinely wants the best for his students. Midterm/Final Exam material is straight off the powerpoints, which are insanely straightforward, and he also includes a lot of videos. Not a hard class overall, and I wouldn't ask for any other prof.
His lectures were enjoyable and valuable in addition to his lecture slides. The readings he gave were generally interesting but very little from the readings were tested. I liked that he gave a choice of questions for the short answer. Also, he communicates well with students regarding expectations for exams and when they will be marked.
Easiest A+ I have ever gotten. Probably because it seems that he loves his job. he tells you almost everything you need to know for the test. I found going to lectures quite helpful as some slide were SUPER vague (only sometimes though). Was a very interesting class for me and I enjoyed the videos. Lots of readings but not even very necessary.
What an ez class. Take this, you will not regret it. Ez to understand, ez tests, ez content. The content is practically all common sense, and the tests reflect it. Class is actually fun because you watch so many videos.
Holdsworth is a nice guy and a decent prof. I don't think he is the best choice for an Indigenous-themed class though, as much of his lectures were out of date and didn't have the best info. Not malicious at all though, he just needs to put in more work to update these lectures. 3 Kritik peer-graded assignments, not bad, and pretty easy mid-terms.
Prof is a very sweet guy. You can tell he is really passionate about what he teaches. If he spoke up a bit it would've been a more enjoyable class. His lectures and powerpoints are informative and entertaining but definitely dense. Textbook he uses/wrote is super clear/helpful. Would suggest his class - just sit in front to get the full experience.
Personally I didn't love this course if you took sociology there is lots of overlap so is can feel repetitive. We had 3 midterms and a final. Each midterm is culmative but the questions are pretty basic or true/false. The course material was outdated but it still got the point across. The class is worth taking if you have an interest in ANTH.
Holdsworth is passionate about the material and wants students to enjoy learning. I however did not enjoy him as a prof as he never allowed retests, despite having only tests to grade, and the tests were too generalized. Easy, yes, but only if you are good at always choosing 'the best answer'. He is funny and tries to be engaging just wasn't for me
The context of the class was interesting however, the lectures themselves aren't very engaging and hard to follow. The tests have confusing wording and graded very heavily. You can go in and review tests which helps since they are cumulative. Read the textbook all the information is on there and read the tests carefully.
This class was certainty not the GPA booster its made out to be. Grades are made up by four heavy tests that cover months of material. Lectures are far too simplified compared to the types of questions asked on the tests. Between his textbook, his lectures/slides, and any other resources, it takes a lot of studying to score high. Cool content tho.
Everyone underneath this thread is probably lying. The class average was a C+ because he made the test so lecture heavy (each slideshow had 50 slides) and on top of that he gave us a really difficult book to read. 4 chapters and each chapter was 20 pages, and 7 videos to memorize concepts from. Would not take again
i have never cried more over a course. he assigned 2 slideshows, each worth 70 slides and all over the matter of a couple of days. i am so dead in this course that i have given up trying to achieve anything over a 60 lol
He had no motivating factors to come to class, his lectures were him practically reading the slides word for word, with no additional information mentioned, they were uninteresting in a class with content that could have been very interesting. He refused to use a mike and consistently used incorrect language and terms.
Chris is a great, caring prof. He clearly cares about his students and will take time to explain concepts outside of class time. He posts large slide decks but usually takes a few classes to get through them. Readings were usually pretty short and digestible. He also adds bonus questions of exams! Lectures were up-to-date and engaging.
Very caring and clearly passionate about anth. Literally all you need to do for an A is watch the videos and do all the readings for each exam. Most of the exam questions were based on supplementary materials and lectures kinda just supported these materials. I would've gotten an A if I knew this before the first exam, just do your readings kids.
Was a nice prof! The lectures were good. The first midterm was hard, but after he saw the whole class didn't do great, he made it easier. Would take one of his courses again!
The course was interesting however, the prof is quiet and monotone which makes lectures not very engaging and hard to follow. The tests are slightly confusing with wording and it's graded heavily. You can review tests which helps since they are cumulative. Just read the textbook all the information is on there.
The lectures can be dry, but the prof is understanding. Tests are fair if you study the slides and readings. UnstuckStudy AI helped with efficient prep.
Overall not horrible. Lectures were easily distillable, included what was necessary only, were uploaded early and did not waste time with a bunch of meaningless material. Tests are a bit difficult if you don't study as they rely heavily on questions that make you think; however if you read the textbook (or even just show up) they make sense.
I loved my class with Dr. Holdsworth! There is a lot of reading required for this class but you can tell he is passionate about the subject! He makes it super clear what will be tested on as well.
