Useless. Class average was low D.
Extremely helpful and approachable teacher. Held extra review sessions every week. Made math interesting and fun for most people in the class.
Teacher is okay. There are better teachers and a lot worse. Take a lot of notes that are very useful but grades hw pretty tough. However, hw is only worth about 5% of your overall grade. Class average is low, but not many intelligent students in class. If you study and work hard, you can get a B. Tests and final are what matter.
Had him for Calc2, one of the better teachers i have had at the U of A. explains things very clearly and throws jokes in every once in a while to keep it interesting. very helpful and always available for extra help. highly recommended. i got a high B with an 86 on the final
He is a fairly nice and keeps math somewhat interesting, however he is a tough grader and his tests are challenging. I'm sure there are worse teachers, but expect to work hard in this class if you want a good grade.
This class is a joke. He is a terrible teacher. He jokes around alot, though some are inappropriate. His grades are ridiculous and very few people are passing in his class. Do not have Jewell if you want a semi easy math class. Just my opinion, but it seems like an opinion of the majority of the class.
He grades pretty tough. He'll make jokes that'll be funny for a while but after a while it wears on you, he can also be a little condescending when he answers a question. Our Class average was probably around a low D. I've taken Precalc and some Calculus and got a C in this class. Take this class at your own risk.
This guy really just wasn't useful. i took precalc and most of calculus before, and still got a low grade(sub C) in the class. He grades homework far too hard, and alot of it is busywork. id say less than 5% of the class liked him as a teacher judging by what people said. Despite this, if youre willing to go to his office hours, hes a great guy
He is a nice guy and actually makes math somewhat interesting, but he's a very tough grader and his tests don't always correspond to the HW. I didn't work very hard, but should have got a much better grade.
This guy will make your stay in this class unbearable. It takes up every spare second of your life. Very smart people pray to get a C in the class. If you can, find a new professor.
This teacher is an absolute nut-job. He goes about his class as if he has something against the world. Punched the white board with full force during a class! Who does that? I was so much focused on how this guy is a lunatic that it screwed up my grade. Well also, I must take into consideration that he cannot teach to save his life either.
He cannot teach at all. grades as if the class was the most important in the world. most of the people are failing/ have low grades due to his ridiculous grading. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
Terrible professor, this is my second time taking precalc and actually ended up doing worse. He gives out a lot of homework and grades it hard. His tests are difficult and long. Dont bother trying to get points back on exams, unless you have everything exactly how he wants it, even if its not written in the problem, you'll be lucky to get points.
By far the worst teacher I have had in my life. Had a 4.0 till this class. The guy is terrible try change out of his class if you unfortunate enough to get him
He seemed funny the first week of school, but then he got mean quickly. He had little patience for the students, got irritated when nobody answered his questions or was confused, and graded very tough. Once he punched the whiteboard out of anger in the middle of class. He apologized, but it was still uncalled for. I learned, but it was TOUGH.
I honestly tried to give this guy the benefit of the doubt that he's a decent human being. But he seems extremely miserable and I get the impression that he's taking it out on his students. Grades tough, tests are long with not enough time, and tries to trick students with nearly every question. Warning, don't do as I did - stay away from him.
Currently just finished a semester with him. First I'd like to say that the math department is pretty weak at the UA, small number of amazing math teachers. Due to this fact I'd say that Chris would be at the top of the pact. He's not amazing, pretty difficult, but most (like 75%) are more difficult. Learned a lot & glad I stayed in the class.
here is how you need to do it: 1) read section/examples in the book 2)review the lecture notes (take good ones). 3)do the webassign for the section. 4)Then do written homework.5)review written homework and what you missed 6)To study for test focus on written hw and webassign if you have time.7) find final study guide on math website ,takes forever
Very difficult teacher, angry, does not show enthusiasm in teaching. Test are extrememly difficult. Paper homework as well as webassign which can sometime take 3 hours to complete together. Study hard and if possible get a different teacher.
I had him & was optimistic. As a teacher he's a bit sarcastic, but very funny! I went to office hours a lot & he was very helpful. I worked very hard & still got a D b/c there wasn't enough time on the exams. Even so, I learned more than I expected to. Don't take it if you just want 3 credits. You'll learn a lot, but your GPA might suffer for it.
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD!!!! He belittles his students and is terrible and explaining the material. My roommate is in the exact same course as me and I have to learn everything from her because of his awful teaching. CHANGE TEACHERS ASAP IF YOU HAVE HIM!
He's pretty tough. If you get on his good side, he is fun and easy to go to for help.
hard class. the textbook sucked. he didn't go over everything we needed to know for homework assignments or tests.
Had him for calc 1.Jewell makes examples in class very difficult, which made it so I understood the material very well. He teaches conceptuals very effectively. He is a sarcastic d*ouche, but he is an awesome teacher. One of the best at UA. His class is very difficult, but he will work with you if you have trouble. Hard class, but well worth taking
I thought he was a great professor. I'm normally a person that thinks math is difficult, but I felt like he knew what he was talking about. He explained stuff well, and he wasn't boooring. I don't think this class was as hard as everyone says it was.
A nice guy! He is very funny! If you want to receive a good grade, just attend the class and do the written homework.
Not exactly the most helpful instructor. He kind of just sits up at the front and talks then has these weird freakout moments, saying "why don't you guys get this?!" His homework/tests are WAY more difficult than what he goes through in class. Be prepared to struggle trying to teach yourself how to do the hard stuff, because he skims.
This professor is completely awful. DO NOT TAKE THIS WITH HIM. He expects us to know material before he teaches it. I was sick with the flu for a week and could not attend class to turn in my homework and basically he said "sorry you're sick but if you don't turn it in you will receive a zero" I dropped that class so fast along with 15 other people
Very Sarcastic. Slightly creepy, which makes him not approachable. He is a good math teacher but also makes you very uncomfortable in class by pointing out everything that you do. I hated going to class, but I also could not ditch because lectures were important.
DO NOT take this class with him. He expects you to know everything prior to even taking the class. There are problems on the homework and tests that you don't even learn in class. He is an incredibly hard grader and is extremely difficult.
Hard class :(
Hard teacher. Never gives full credit on the written homework. Tests are incredibly difficult and forget trying to email him to set up an office appointment, he won't reply! Had a very difficult time in this class.
Kind of immature and weird. Def knows the stuff, but teaching is not as in depth as he expects you to know on his long hard tests. He throws markers and cusses to be cool, but he still wears his shorts like the grandpa from UP.
He's a really cool guy who cares about his students. If you actually show up to class, do the homework and review before tests, you can do fine. He is a little immature at times but he is friendly and wants you to succeed. By far the best choice of teacher for Vector Calculus.
Extremely hard grader. Tests are way harder than anything seen in class. Jokes like he's friendly, but assigns grades like he hates people.
By far the best Vector Calc teacher. He makes sure to explain things clearly in class and does many examples in class. His homework can be tricky but you can always go to office hours. If you study hard and to the HW the tests are doable. If you really want to understand Vector calc Definitely take Jewell.
Chris Jewell is the best of vector calc instructors. He knows his stuff, however, the homework is difficult and time consuming, and the exams are full of trick questions. He does joke a lot, and the class was more enjoyable than some due to his friendly nature, but get another instructor for vector calc. Avoid him for college algebra as well.
The enviornment in his class was easy. However, he is harsh in terms of grading. The only thing he does is taking points off from your paper. His tests are tricky w/ bench of calculations! If you really know about vector calc, go w/ him, the tests will not be a trouble for ya. Otherwise, please try to avoid him, especially in summer.
WORST EVER. He wasn't helpful at all and is very disrespectful to his students. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
I thought he was a very enthusiastic teacher and clearly taught the subject matter. If you are willing to attend class and put effort, you should do well. He is also very helpful outside of class.
Taking vector calculus with him over the summer was well worth it. I was GROing the class and he explained vector much better the second time around. The pace was rather fast, but he did a good job keeping everyone with the material. I would recommend him to anyone. His tests are challenging, but study and you are okay. Know T/F questions too.
Explains material well, and is extremely helpful outside of class. Is super sarcastic, and isn't afraid to call students out on their stuff, which I find great. His tests are harder than the midterm and final, so if you do well on those you'll be fine.
Hard class in general not helpful
This is a tough class to understand conceptually but he does a good job at helping you visualize everything. He keeps class entertaining and fun which is hard to find in a math teacher
Very disrespectful to students and expects you to know everything before you have taken the class. Extremely tough grader and will be disrespectful to you IN HIS GRADING. He is very condescending and tries too hard to be funny. He makes the whole class uncomfortable.
Honestly one of the worst math experiences of my life. This man is incredibly disrespectful and is the most anal grader I have ever come across. Avoid him at all costs.
His way or the highway. An unpleasant person who doesn't seem to even want to be in the classroom.
WORST INSTRUCTOR I ever had. Does not explain the material, I agree with another review, he belittles students instead of teaching them. His grading is unpredictable. CHANGE your class if you got him!
Terrible teacher! He gives students tests that they can't finish in the allotted time. I felt ill-prepared for the final. I have taken Calc 1 and 2 in high school and am struggling to get a C in his class. If you go in for help during his office hours he is more clear but he will make you feel stupid for not understanding concepts.
If you have this teacher get out now! He grades extremely hard on homework and will not admit when he is wrong. He is rude and calls people out on things that didn't actually happen. He doesn't actually teach the material and I have always been good at math and had to get a tutor just to save my grade and get a C in the class.
I took the online winter section of MATH 111. There wasn't much interaction with the teacher, but what there was went fine. The class itself is basically reading the textbook, doing homework, and going to campus twice to take exams. If you want to get trig out of the way quickly and are capable of learning math out of a book, you'll be satisfied.
I know what you're thinking when you read these comments. "Oh I'm good at math, I know that won't be me". Don't be that guy, this man is an impossible grader. Extremely rude and does no do a good job of presenting things in a clear and cohesive manner. Very all over the place. His comments on homework are not helpful and review is non existent.
If possible, please avoid this professor. Before you read this, let me tell you that I am a straight A student and this is my first B/C in a class. He is very confusing, his Hwk and exams are mostly trick questions, he grades very hard, he wastes so much time on tangents which sets you behind and is extremely rude if he doesn't lie you. Avoid him.
Simply put... this guy is the worst teacher you can possibly have. His grading is extremely tough, he's kind of immature sometimes when teaching. Homeworks take a lot of your time, if you an answer wrong (likely), he won't tell you where you messed up... Avoid this guy. Really... avoid him.
I believe this guy is frustrated with life. He's friendly inside the classroom and you feel that you are actually understanding the material. However, his tests (and hw's) are impossible. The way he grades is like if he hates people. If you want to challenge yourself and actually pass this class, take another teacher. Take him if you want to fail.
His tests are incredibly difficult because he grades so harshly. He's not approachable for questions and he is condescending when he does answer them. Written homework is of his own creation and there is no answer key so good luck studying from old HW problems. Would not recommend him to anyone.
This instructor explain the problem very well, help us imagine the images in 3D, and it is fun in class. In his class, only 85% , you can get an A. I think the tests is not hard, just go to the class and understand what he talking about, and do the homework, we can get a good grade. If you need take MATH 223, I sincerely recommend this professor.
By far the best math teacher I've had at UofA. Yes, the tests are difficult and effort is required, but he actually corrects your homework when he grades it so you can redo it to study. He is very helpful in trying to visualize what is happening in 3D, which makes all the difference for the material at the end of the class. Highly recommend.
Horrible! Grading is inconsistent and impossible to figure out. If its not his specific notation, but still correct, you will be docked. Test are twice as long as they should be for the time limit. Don't expect any kind of partial credit either. You're docked more for algebra errors then on the vector calculus material. And no calculator allowed.
Skip this class if you want to pass
Chris Jewell is an excellent instructor. He's mildly odd and a bit eccentric, but if you can appreciate or overlook the personality quarks, he makes for an excellent instructor. His assignments and tests are difficult, but if you attend his lectures and his office hours, you have to try to fail his class. Would recommend him definitely.
So here's the thing about this guy: he's got a very dry, sarcastic sense of humor and if you don't get it you might be offended. But as a teacher he knows what he's talking about and often tries to make sure everyone understands. He always gives study guides for his tests--there were only three--and usually provides extra office hours.
As long as you aren't easily offended and can deal with his sarcasmhumor, then I recommend his class. He explains concepts well but, if you need help, he has office hours several times a week and can also make time for you (just don't ask anything too stupid). He grades homework by syntax, so be sure to read the syllabus. Good class overall.
This is basically a self taught class and he does not do much for help. I took this online over break and he takes forever to responds to emails and his reminders on test and information for the test come almost only a day or two before a test which is not enough time to prepare.
Prof. Jewell is great at explaining concepts while working through examples on the board. Tests and homework are straight forward and easy. He is helpful during office hours. During lectures he can be really arrogant and condescending. He singles out students and makes them feel stupid when they ask questions or for clarification.
Mr. Jewell is a good lecturer and does a great job at explaining subjects! His tests are fair and the homework prepares you mostly for them. My only complaints were the fact that he is rude to people who ask legitimate questions and he never responded to an email I sent. He's a nice guy, but does have a bad day every now and then.
Chris Jewell was a really laid back professor. Did not record attendance and only about 1 homework assignment a week. However, I would STRONGLY advise someone with no previous knowledge of calculus to take another professor. He is very degrading if you are confused, and doesn't reach out to students. Lectures are simply problem after problem.
Professor Jewell is a great teacher, his lectures are very clear and helpful. His tests are not hard if you put in any effort toward studying, I always studied the night before and did well. There are times where you have homework due everyday of the week but for the most part there isn't much homework and its always short 3-4 question assignments.
When you get him, he might make you feel stupid. Beware with what you answer loudly. He leaves little homework and makes explanations easy. It was an easy course.
Calculus explained easily in this course. When I took this course it was explained in a way that I understood and the big concepts were made simple. Jewell will often compare the new problems to simple, elementary math problems. If you are out of line, he WILL let you know. Jewell will joke around and have fun with students. No calculators on tests
I really liked having Professor Jewell, despite the fast nature of Math 122A, I thought he did a great job of explaining each of the topics in a way that made them easy to understand and easy to remember. Professor Jewell's teaching style made Math 122A significantly less intimidating.
Don't let the past reviews scare you. This is one of the best teachers/lecturers in the math department at UA. I will say there's tough grading, sometimes a bit too tough, and sometimes this professor can get a bit agitated with the class. However, he very clearly explains the complex subject of vector calculus. Also, it is clear that he cares.
He is sarcastic and sometimes it can seem offensive, but he actually cares a lot about helping students understand calculus. I would highly recommend this professor if you have genuine interest in mathematics, or you actually try to understand the material. He's always helpful and explains things multiple ways to ensure that students understand.
I had a different math teacher for the first half of the semester, then was given Jewell. In comparison to the other teacher, he was amazing. He gives homework that is extremely relevant to his tests, and is willing to work with you in office hours. Seems to really care about his students--however, can a bit mean if someone isn't getting it.
I see why some might find him rude, but the guy has a good heart beneath that arrogant appearance. His exams are fair, and he teaches so well. His really talented in that regard. If you're offended easily, don't take his class. If you are not, go ahead, you won't regret it.
I thought he did a good job at explaining the concepts during lectures. However, I felt like he was attempting to be funny, but it came off very condescing, which turned me off from him as a professor. Felt uncomfortable in office hours due to that also.
Jewell is a really good guy, pretty funny, and pretty enjoyable. If you are sensitive you might steer clear, but he's got a decent sense of humour. Plus, he is really talented at explaining the material. I mean f*cking gifted, you really can just show up to class, do a bit of homework and make it out with a B, and a good understanding.
Jewell is by far the worst professor I've had at the UofA. The course is easy but Jewell does not seem to care about the students. He makes the course harder than it is. Here's how 1. Only goes through easy questions in the class. 2. Releases homework due Monday on Friday night. 3. Doesn't provide ANY helpful feedback 4. Doesn't teach elaborately
He's a strange person. Tries to be funny and sarcastic, which isn't the end of the world, but sometimes it's a little too much. He definitely knows and understands the material, but he kind of does the bare minimum. Forgets to update course calendar on his website, not very thorough with making sure students are well-informed. Ignores emails.
A double-edged sword of a professor. Very experienced & teaches every concept in an intuitive way and is aware of how new the material is. Goes through examples of the same caliber as test questions, so there aren't any surprises. Extremely sarcastic, which I found amusing and engaging... but if you're easily offended find another prof. 4-6 HW/wk.
he's so rude and doesn't answer emails. Makes you feel dumb
Professor Jewell is one of the best math professors I have ever had. He explains difficult concepts in such an easy to understand manner, and truly cares about your success in his class. He is always available for office hours, and makes you want to go to class just to hear his jokes. If you study and do the homework, you will do well in this class
i am a student studying online outside the US. huge time difference. he doesn't respond to emails. doesn't care what i suffer from the course. he grades hws as if they were final exams. eve though most of my answers are correct, he takes points off when small mistakes are made in step. overall really bad professor for grading, caring, and also rude
He will definitely prepare you for HIS exams through homework, as he grades homework very harshly, looking at every detail and note that is made. Unfortunately, his homework and exams are nothing like the final exam. If the difficulty of the course would have prepared us for the exam, it would make sense, but it did not. First C I have ever got.
Tough teacher. He gives lectures and none of it makes sense when doing webassign. Get ready to watch youtube videos to understand better. 3-5 HW per WK. Super tough grader. Don't use his procedures in HW or tests? He will mark it wrong.
He was good at teaching the material, but got frustrated sometimes if he felt like the class wasn't understanding something fast enough. I know people say dont take if your easily offended, and I wouldn't say I am, but when I went to office hours he definitely made me feel really stupid to the point where I just left before figuring anything out.
He is probably one of the worst math teachers I have ever had. He's incredibly rude when you don't understand a concept right away, he marks off points for the dumbest things (even if you got it right), he never responds to emails, and the homework never correlates with his lectures. I would recommend you stay away from his class.
The worst teacher I have ever had. He tries to be funny but isnt and makes his class miserable for everyone. He grades homeworks like they are final exams! He is not understanding in the slightest and will not help you if you are struggling. Do not take this class.
Sarcastic and amusing professors. Lectures are excellent and often feel intuitive (of course that works why didn't I think of that!). Homework will prepare you well for the tests and will be graded with solid feedback. Additionally, the shared final exam is an absolute breeze because his HW and exams were more difficult and prepare you very well.
