AMAZING professor. he really makes lectures fun and interesting and i actually looked forward to going to class. he's so excited about anthropology and such a nice guy. don't buy the book. know his notes front and back and it's a guaranteed A.
One of the few classes I was always happy to attend, Prof. Kirk definitely knows what he's teaching and HOW to teach it. Given, the topic itself is really extensive and there are a lot of things to remember, but definitely worth the time to take. Pay attention in class, take REALLY GOOD notes.
He is so funny, and its obvious he loves what he teaches, which makes the class really fun!
Great teacher. He is so funny. I don't think he is teaching next semester. I have Katherine Whitcome for lab right now. Do not take her for lecture next spring. She is so boring and when she tries to be interesting you can tell she isn't being herself.
This guy has been to all points of the world and has priceless info to share..great guy, smarter than anyone i've ever met...he will end up as your role-model..
He is the reason I went to grad school. Best professor I have ever had.
Awesome professor!! really funny, and will make you interested in monkeys! If you don't believe in evolution don't bother signing up for the class. take Carl for you TA, he's really helpful.
Dr. Kirk is a wonderful professor and his passion for what he teaches is truly infectious. Going to class is pretty necessary, but that won't be hard because it's the sort of class that everyone seems to enjoy going to. Reading the textbook is also a necessity, but the readings are not excessive and pretty doable. Take a class with him!
Great, hilarious professor. His class was always fun to go to. The labs were pretty hard though, and the class gets harder as the semester goes on. An A is definetly attainable, though. If your going to take this class, or you need a natural science credit, this is the professor you want.
Professor Kirk was amazing! He made the class so entertaining with his quirky voices and jokes. I was not interested in taking any kind of science class, but by the end of the semester this became my favorite class. I HIGHLY recommend taking this course as your natural science credit.
Great professor! Uses the book a lot. Dr. Kirk obviously loves his subject and enjoys teaching it! It is always fun to go to his class. If I could take him again I would! Don't miss the opportunity to take his classes!
Fantastic. Take this class for your Science and Tech II requirement.
The best professor I've had at UT, and for an intro-level course during my first semester. He is super energetic and his lectures are always very funny. Even his TAs are great. This is one of the best classes at UT.
His class to me was very difficult. there werer only 3 exams, and although I studied a ton i still made my worst grade since college in this class. he talks very fast and its hard to keep up with notes. also his tests are pretty hard, fill in the blank and true/false are two big chunks.
He's hilarious. I definitely did underestimate the complexity of the lab exams which are timed.
Professor Kirk is an awesome guy, but unless you love to sit down and memorize a million terms for fill in the blank and truefalse tests, don't take this class. I had to drop it because of how tedious and time-consuming it was. The labs weren't helpful either, and were just more memorization. I wish I had picked another science class.
Funny professor but hard class. Bring your laptop to class because lecture goes fast. Tests can be tricky and some of the questions come from the book so you have to read! Material is really boring (monkeys and fossils). Labs start out easy but get harder as the semester goes on. Take the online 301 with Kappelman instead I hear it's a joke.
Chris Kirk is fantastic. I actually wanted his lectures to be longer. He's hilarious and presents the information in interesting ways, no matter what he's talking about. The only negative of this course was with lecture, lab, and readings from the book, there was a huge amount of info that could be tested, which made studying stressful.
Dr. Kirk is my favorite professor at UT. He loves what he does and loves passing on the material to students so much. He's also extremely brilliant and knowledgeable. His tests will be tough if you don't go to class but I actually look forward to his lectures. Coolest guy ever, hopefully I'll be able to take another one of his classes!
Best intro anthropology prof, recommended by everyone. Fascinating and lively lectures, even people who were just taking it for credit were interested. Labs are boring obviously though
He is amazing. He loves what he does and he will make you rethink your major because you will want to do anthropology! Class covers 80% of what is on the exams and the book covers the other 20%. Labs are great as long as you get a good TA and lab is very hands on. Honestly loved this course.
His lectures are great! He keeps you interested and really does care. In office hours, he tries his best to help every student, will even take you to a lab for extra help. Lab itself is hard and this class depends on getting a good TA. Show up to class- He doesn't post lectures anywhere. Read along with lectures, it'll be less confusing
My favorite professor at UT by far! He makes his lectures interesting and fun to listen to. I learned more than I was expecting since this was a class based on learning about all primate species and evolution. I will definitely take one of his classes again. the class is difficult and you will have to memorize a lot of names and characteristics.
Professor Kirk is hilarious. He made a subject that could have easily been boring into something very interesting. His tests are 90% based on his lectures, but as long as you show up it should not be hard. Take him if you have to take anthropology or a general for science, you won't be disappointed!
Great professor that everyone loves. Very energetic lectures; attendance is not mandatory but he doesn't post his powerpoints so going is highly recommended. Lab attached is not too bad with a good TA, only 3 tests and no final. Not a lot of reading but skimming the textbook is helpful for exams, but not necessary.
I thought I was going to hate this class, but I loved it; super interesting once you get past how overwhelming it is. It was challenging, required a lot of memorization. But Kirk and his TAs are amazing. Only flaw is that he refuses to go back slides if you missed something. Definitely study with some smart classmates, share notes on a google doc.
Like everyone else, I did like Kirk BUT... the class is pretty tough if you don't read (and there is A LOT of reading). He goes really fast through lectures and doesn't go back. He puts an insane amount of material on the test and doesn't really tell you what/how to study. Overall, if you're not an anthropology major I wouldn't take Kirk's class.
Kirk is extremely engaging and you can almost never find any of his lectures boring. There are 3 midterms, no final, and lab activities for each discussion class which are relatively easy to complete. The workload is pretty light; literally all you need to do is to show up to class. His lecture can go kind of fast to be sure to pay attention to it.
Dr. Kirk was one of the most hilarious professors I've ever had. Even though anthropology wasn't in my field of interest, Dr. Kirk kept it entertaining - I even decided for a while if I wanted to minor in anthropology! His tests 80% from lectures and 20% from textbook but trust me, if you are good at memorizing, it's guaranteed you'll get an A!
I am an anthro major, and I took this my first semester here at UT. This class was probably one of my favorite classes to go to because he was clear and so helpful when it came to learning exactly what to study for exams. As long as you kind of pay attention and put some studying in, you'll do fine.
Dr. Kirk is absolutely hilarious and makes his lectures so fun. He's super energetic and does weird and quirky things a lot. He goes through slides too fast sometimes and doesn't allow you to take pics/voice record, so get ready! As long as you study and know your stuff you're fine. Labs are super easy but the timed lab tests are stressful.
When I first started taking his class I thought I would be insanely bored because I only took the class for credit, but he is amazing! He keeps you interested and locked in on what he is saying. The tests are something you want to study for and the labs once a week are worth it. GREAT TEACHER! Definitely inspirational.
I was planning on swapping this class for another, but his enthusiasm got me to stay. Boy was I wrong. He goes through lectures so fast with so much detail it's hard to keep up. Labs are boring and excessive. 90 questions in 50 minutes on a test? Plus there's SO MUCH TO STUDY FOR? This class sucked. My first C in college bc of him ( I'm a junior)
He is so enthusiastic! He is excited to teach every day. Lectures go pretty fast but he's organized and makes it interesting. I had some trouble with this class while adjusting to college life, but I highly recommend him if you're at all interested in evolution, monkeys, or how humans came to be! Be sure to go to lecture, lab, read, and study!
Kirk was probably the best professor I had this semester. He's very passionate about his subject, and has years of field experience. Great intro class-three lecture exams, two lab exams. He doesn't post slides or record lectures, so if you skip a lot you won't do well at all.
Dr. Kirk is truly amazing, he's extremely passionate about Bio Anthropology. There is also of memorization in this class for the three test, no final, and two lab quizzes. Overall, the class is not hard and he makes lectures fun. HE DOES NOT POST HIS SLIDES!!! So you will have to go to class and take notes to keep up.
The honors version of this class is okay. He is an awesome lecturer, but when it comes down to it, it is slide after slide after slide of information every day then only 3 tests with tons of information on each. Preparing fully is nearly impossible considering he does not give any indication on what was being tested.
Awesome lecturer. Your grade is based on three tests over lecture notes. He covers everything from the book in class.
Favorite professor I've ever had!! Content is HEAVY--there are only 3 tests & no final, so each has an insane amount to study for, but exams come directly from lectures so take good notes and only get the textbook if it helps you study. Lectures are amazing! He's funny, intelligent, and enthusiastic. I learned more here than in all of hs science.
Don't know why people say his class is easy. He is an engaging lecturer, but tests are ridiculous. There were about 90 questions, nearly all fill in the blank. Lectures are LONG and he doesn't post slides or allow you to record his lectures... so you have to frantically write everything down. Too difficult for a core science, take something else
My favorite class at UT. Dr. Kirk is engaging, funny, and his enthusiasm is second only to his knowledge. I studied the night before for his tests and got B's, so don't do that, and you'll get an A. Take good, detailed notes, and he tells you what will be on the test. Easy and fun science credit. Grades were 3 tests and two scientific reports.
I love this man. He makes this course incredibly engaging so that you want to attend and learn the info. The tests are long and detailed, but he stresses what will be covered, and the textbook review questions help you figure out what to study. I took this course to get a science credit and was expecting it to be boring, but it was anything but.
This class was awesome in that you get to work with the human osteology collection and that Dr. Kirk is super peppy and knowledgable. This class requires a LOT of time spent in the lab after hours. Quizzes are difficult in that you have 30 seconds to identify each bone/structure given. The 2 projects are hard but fun if you start early.
Great teacher! Had to take this course because all other science courses were filled. Loved going to lectures. Tests are 90 questions but you should be able to answer 75% of the questions just by listening to the lectures. Labs are really good review for what was mentioned in class. Highly recommend, especially if youre not very strong at science.
Dr. Kirk is hands down the best lecturer at UT. If you have taken any intro bio class this class will be an absolute breeze. Each test is 100 questions and the labs are so easy and laidback. Even if you aren't a science major THIS CLASS IS STILL SO INTERESTING!!
Take this class! Dr. Kirk is energetic & genuinely excited about everything he teaches and it shows. Even before he gets to teach his own contributions to the coursework you know he's an expert on the topic. The textbook is good for extra understanding but not always a necessity. There's a ton of content but take good lecture notes and you're set.
Best teacher at UT. Kirk is hilarious, knowledgeable, and incredible at capturing attention. I took him for biological anthropology and will definitely find another class to take with him. If you have the option to take his class, do yourself a favor and take it. His lectures cover everything the test is on and lab is easy.
As a non-science major & someone who is horrible at science classes, I loved his class. It wasn't easy for me, so if you're not a science person I don't believe it's an easy A. Attendance is mandatory as he doesn't post his slides. Prof Kirk's lectures are very content-heavy, but he keeps the class super interesting. I would recommend this class
Dr. Kirk is the best professor I've had. He always comes prepared and he is an entertaining lecturer. He does NOT allow you to take pictures of the lectures or record them, nor does he post them on canvas BUT he wants you to succeed. If you have any questions you can always go to him during office hours and he will help you whatever way he can.
Dr. Kirk is one of the best professors I've ever had! He is truly passionate about what he teaches and even more passionate about his students succeed. The grading criteria for this class is clear. It's a tough subject but -- as long as you pay attention in lecture and lab -- you'll do well. Also, be sure to read the textbook. It's necessary.
LOVE this man. Took this class for shiggles and while it's not what I expected it to be, I really enjoyed it. Get ready for a ton of memorization when it comes time for the exam and try to study in a group if you can. Once you know the information, the class is super straightforward after that.
I took the honors section of ANT301 with Professor Kirk. I have never met someone who is so passionate about their field. He is very reasonable when it comes to grades and really tries to give advantages to the people who show up to discussions. He is so funny and you will definitely be telling your friends about him. 100% would take again!
Dr. Kirk is awesome. He is so funny and very knowledgeable about the field. You will learn so much, ranging from primate behavior to primate and human evolution. You definitely have to work very hard to do well. His lectures are about 8-12 hours for each quiz and you must watch them all and take notes. It's very worth it though! So amazing.
I took multiple classes with Dr. Kirk during my time at UT, and they were all in my top 5. He is very engaging in his lectures, and loves what he teaches. The courses aren't easy, and you'll have to put in the work to get the grade you want. He is very good at answering questions and takes the time to help you understand.
AMAZING professor, BUUUUT.... Prepare for what might be the hardest intro class you've ever taken. The class info is cool, but there's A LOT to learn in a short amount of time. Sadly, exams r all based on exact memorization, so if that ain't your thing, you prob won't do v well--even if you actually understand the concepts. Grade3 exams+labs
Kirk is one good. ass. professor. This class is extremely interesting because he is so passionate about what he teaches. HOWEVER - this class is TOUGH. 3 difficult exams and a lab every week with no wiggle room (no curves, no drops, etc.) But I def recommend taking this class because what you learned will stick w you for years and years to come.
amazing professor!!!!! is super passionate about anthro and the class is super interesting!!!! he's very sweet!
This has been one of the most unnecessarily stressful courses in my entire academic career. Professor Kirk gives such an abundance of information at once with very little review that it is extremely difficult to keep track of everything taught. The professor is passionate, but this course is not worth the stress. Find another science credit.
Professor Kirk is an amazing professor, and content wise very interesting class. 1 lab per week and 3 exams. The exams are super lecture heavy, very dense, and pure memorization. If you want a good grade in this class you have to pay careful attention to lecture specifics and devote a substantial amount of time to just memorizing all the info
Entire class is memorization. 10 labs and 3 midterms. Each midterm is around 90 questions. Questions are matching, true and false, and fill in the blanks. Seems like it would be an easy class but was impossible to memorize every small detail that was tested on. First three weeks were online. Failed the first midterm and could not recover my grade.
Dr. Kirk is extremely passionate and it makes his lectures really enjoyable. While attendance isn't mandatory, you need to review the lectures to pass the tests. He made the lectures available online so you could access them separately. Tests are each 25% of your grade, and lots of memorization so you need to study. The material is simple though.
A great professor. You need to put in the work to do well in this class but it is worth it. Dr. Kirk is wonderfully helpful and has amazing yet dense lectures. He was always willing to answer questions and help you understand the material. Super sweet guy.
Professor Kirk is a great guy. He was funny and engaging in class and seems to really care about his students. The only downside to this class is that your entire grade is based on 3 tests. If you do decide to take this class, which I recommend, know that it's not an easy A by any means.
I loved taking ANT 301 with Dr. Kirk! His lectures were organized and extremely engaging. His tests were pretty straightforward and had an objective format like matching and multiple-choice questions. One thing to keep in mind is that the material is not the easiest so you really need to study and know all of the material to succeed in the class.
I beg you all to take a class with Dr. Kirk. I took him as a freshman, and I've spent four years trying to fit another class with him into my schedule. He is incredibly passionate, engaging, and funny. I still know more than I ever needed to about monkeys. I can not recommend Dr. Kirk enough. Hands down one of my favorite profs at UT.
I have Professor Kirk for ANT 301 and he is amazing! He is very enthusiastic about what he teaches, and makes sitting through an hour lecture feel like a breeze. There is a lab every week, which isn't too bad, and interesting at times. Grades come from 3 exams and cumulative lab score, so attending every lecture is very necessary!
I have never met a more interesting, engaging, and funny professor! His tests are lecture-based however he tells you mid-lecture on what to expect and his material is easy to recall because of his lecture style. Labs are. a bit more difficult but a lower part of your grade. Quite literally the best course I've taken so far at UT. Fully recommend.
This class was pure memorization. He was not lenient at all and very difficult. Absolutely no curve or extra credit or ANY drops. Do not take this class with this professor.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! The exams were extremely difficult and were given from hefty slideshows that probably has not been edited in 10 years. Dr. Kirk does not offer dropping the worst exam grade, curving, extra credit, retakes, or anything every other good professor does at UT. Almost feels like he does not care about the students performances.
This class could have been better if lecture slides weren't inaccessible, if he offered extra credit or at the very least, some sort of low assignment grade drop or curve. If you're going to take this class, I suggest not worrying about lab grades and instead focus on getting HIGH exam grades (which is hard if you're not good at memorizing).
I took ev anatomy of head and neck with Dr. Kirk and it is probably the hardest class I have ever taken, but if there is a man for the job, it's him. Visual memorization heavy (it's anatomy after all) and 90% of your grade is exams. He is an incredible teacher and incredibly knowledgeable, but do not take him UNLESS you are interested in his class.
GO TO LECTURE!!! TAKE GOOD NOTES!!! Prof. Kirk was funny and he managed to make me moderately interested in early humans. Heed my warning, this class is memorization HEAVY. You gotta pay attention, it's easy to miss out on core details or things you didn't think would be important. Do not study day of exams, four days minimum.
Extremely knowledgeable professor who is very engaging and energetic. If you don't have to take the class then don't take it especially if you aren't good in science because the tests are hard and count for 75% of your class grade. TAs are nice and helpful. However, the lecture has disorganized info, which makes it difficult to study for tests.
Dr. Kirk absolutely made this class. If you get a chance to have him, take this class. Take good notes in class, since no lecture materials are shared. If you study your notes and go to office hours to ask questions, you'll do great.
Unless you genuinely want to learn about monkeys and can memorize a lot of things at once, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Three tests are each worth 25% of your overall grade, lecture slides are not posted, and there are labs/2 lab practicals. If you're looking for an easy science credit, take nutrition.
Amazing and engaging lecturer! I found myself getting excited about primate and human evolution, even though I had never cared before in my life. You def have to study for the tests, but they are reasonable. The labs were also fun and the TAs were super knowledgeable.
Dr. Kirk is the best professor I've ever had at UT. He changed my entire UT path. Despite this being an intro course, the TA's in this class are all doing fascinating research, and they're all really accessible and helpful. If you enjoy learning and want to take a class with one of the best lecturers at UT, take this class. But, it is not a free A.
Hardest class I have ever taken for absolutely no reason. No notes are posted (what??), or lecture recordings. Are you trying to teach us or just add tons of stress? If you have troubles focusing in class, even if you zone out for 30 seconds you're COOKED. highly do not recommend.
Dr. Kirk is hilarious, but bio anthro can be tough since its very memorization heavy. How to make an A: Step 1- go to lecture, type out EVERYTHING on the slides. Step 2- put all of that information in an anki deck and memorize ALL of it. Start early! This may seem daunting, but if you commit things to memory this way its hard to not make an A.
Read the textbook and study frequently. This class is all dense lectures, and the tests can have anything you learn or anything mentioned in the textbook, so ensure you know everything. Dr. Kirk is funny and a great lecturer though, and you never get bored. This isn't a blowoff class, but it's a good intro to college classes as a freshman.
Tests are way harder than lecture depth. Attendance is not mandatory(as in graded) but you will feel a difference in classroom dynamic if you miss a lecture for any reason. Very intelligent professor, but I had a below average experience.
Dr. Kirk is one of my favorite professors at UT. You will never get bored during his lectures, and he is clearly very passionate about the subject matter. Attendance is mandatory, and you do really have to pay attention to the material to do well on the tests. However, the material is super interesting, and the class was fun to be in.
The most interesting class I've taken here! Dr. Kirk is an amazing professor. That said, expect the workload of an advanced osteology course. Lectures are dense (>50 slides), quizzes are detailed, and the final projects (case studies) are fun but a lot of work. This class is NOT easy but teaches insanely cool material, and is rewarding if you study
Literally the best professor I have ever had. He makes the lectures so much fun and entertaining. It's an easy class but you HAVE to go to lecture he doesn't post any course material really besides the textbook. But if you go to lecture and pay attention, the test are usually super easy. They're mostly true/false or matching. LOVE THIS GUY SO MUCH
Amazing teacher, I learned a lot in this class but I think maybe I was just a little too stupid or depressed to really study enough for these tests. Be sure to study hard, tests are a huge portion of your grade and failing just one can knock your grade down to a fail. Outside of that very entertaining and fun lectures
His lectures are so fun and engaging. Attendance isn't mandatory, but show up if you want to do well on exams, which aren't difficult if you've paid attention and studied your notes. He cares about his students and clearly loves his area of expertise. This class gave me a newfound interest in biological anthropology!
Took this class freshman year (junior now) and I think kirk is still my favorite professor i've had at UT. I'm a government major who knows nothing about any of this stuff but professor kirk's lectures are hilarious and engaging and I was somehow always on the edge of my seat waiting to learn more about whatever monkey stuff he was talking about.
This class, my TA, and Dr Kirk influenced me to change my major to anthropology. Absolutely fantastic stuff. There is something for most people here if you are open minded. You will not be disappointed by this class if you are interested in it, but this class is not to just get your science credit. You have to apply yourself, A tier teaching team.
Took this class for my sciene credit and was pleasantly suprised. There are three exams and two lab practicals throughout the semester, but if you pay attention in lecture they shouldn't be too hard. Kirk's lectures are super engaging, so it shouldn't be an issue!
Dr. Kirk is great at what he does! He is very engaging and entertaining during his lectures and shows his true passion for biological anthropology. This helps process the huge amounts of information. After the first exam, the class becomes slightly more difficult, but the best way to navigate this is to attend every lecture and study your notes!
Solid professor, definitely interested in his course material, but if you are taking this for an easy A required credit i highly advise you to look elsewhere. This class starts off easy and then becomes the most unlearnable collection of random jargon that I've ever taken.
This was one of the most interesting classes that I have ever taken. Dr. Kirk lectures are very interesting, the topics keep you engaged, and you leave every class thinking about what you've learned. The class is grades on 3 test and labs, and is very lecture heavy. As long as you take active notes and do a good amount of studying you'll do great!
