Well if you understand what he say there is a plus.
good man, good teacher - do your work! he'll be happy
he just doesnt make any god damn sense
i'm foreign. i have a foreign accent. he still sucks.
Very helpful
GOD AWFUL! Turns each class into a PC tyraid. Trashes all white male charachters in book. Unclear expectations and grading. Unresponsive to students. Will not clarify unfair grades. Gives better grades to black and Nigerian girls. Should be deported!
You cant understand a word he says, how can we know when to hand stuff in? Just because hes black, doesnt mean we HAVE to read all black authors!!! I could fit my whole right arm between the gap in his teeth!!!
This professor is one of the greatest professors at WCU...very helpful, available, etc.
very unclear of his expectations. if he disagreed with your position it reflected in the grade! The most boring experience of my life!!!!!
Can be very hard to understand because of his thick accent. Usually very boring class if you read the books you didn't have to pay attention in class and could still get an A.
hard, but good.
Give him a chance and you'll really learn something. He tries hard to be fair and his accent isn't a problem if you're patient.
his accent is a problem. He seems interested in helping students, and is a nice guy. If you read the books, youll get an A. In class you repeat what is in the books.
Awesome professor...don't take him unless you plan to read and work hard though because he expects a lot. He's demanding, but fair.
I've taken two courses by him. He is not the easiest, but the class isnt hard if you do the work. He is fair, and if you are bright enough to be in college you should be able to understand him through his accent. u go over books chapter by chapter inclass
He's a wonderful teacher. I find it discerning that someone on here made fun of his physical appearance to make him/herself feel better about the lousy grade he/she undoubtedly got in his class. I'd recommend him to anyone. He's the best.
Papers were easy. I got A's in everything. He's the best prof for this course. Take him...you won't regret it!
After you get used to his accent, you'll get used to the course. Easy papers b/c he lets the class decide what topics to choose for each paper and the midterm and finals are based on one or two of the topics you discussed in class for your papers. Easy A.
This class was one of the best of my life. I was never interested in reading fiction until I took this class. I have gotten so much enjoyment out of books that I would have never read before
Couldn't stand having to buy and "read" the 7 books required for this class. Papers were easy cuz we had a choice of what to write about. Read the Cliff notes and you'll get an A. No need to read all 7 books;-)
Dr. Awuyah is a good professor... and generally good-hearted... I would definitely reccomend taking him. 2nd best professor for the course behind Morante... heh... :)
Dr. Awuyah is a really good teacher, he puts a lot of effort into eveything he does and expects his students to do the same. If you work hard, you'll get an A. Highly recommend him.
He's a pretty blunt, funny guy. We had a lot to read in my South African Lit. Sem class, but the class was surprisingly easy.
I didn't like the class because it turned out to be a "Women's Lit" class instead of world lit. All the books were about women who were treated improperly.
Has a short temper, and he is very tough to understand since he has an accent. Definitely not open minded
l-o-t-s of analytical reading (identifying themes, symbols etc.). fully agree w/other review that if you work hard you'll do fine. a stickler for attendance so if youre prone to missing class he's probably not for you. very knowledgable, he's from ghana which lent a sense of authenticity to the african lit class.
Highly disorganized, close-minded teacher. There seems to be a mutual dislike between him and the class. He doesn't want to be teaching at West Chester and it's obvious.
boring
As i walked in, i liked the class. That ended after i got my first essay grade back. i included creative ideas and unique style. He gave me a C+ on my first two papers, if you don't write like him, you will not get an A or even a B. Highly critical! Grades like it's a 300 level class.
A strong African accent and a PhD in English makes Awuyah tough to understand at first. However I found as the semester progressed my respect for his teaching style grew. His grading is tough but fair, his opinions well defined but not forced upon you. Some of the books sucked (The Inheritance) but I never found class dull.
Easy class, he kept in mind that you had other classes and you had a life as well. I got an A without buying any books. So what about the accent, its not like he talks in that way on purpose to make you nuts. Be respectful.
One of the worst professors I have ever encountered. They say as a professor you are either a facilitator or a roadblock. This guy is a mountain smack dab in the middle of the educational highway. He is very vague, unclear, and close minded. All the students in the class i was in were thoroughly confused and turned off by him. AVOID!!!!!
avoid him at all costs!
wow! I have never had a professor go through page by page, chapter by chapter! omg! soooo boring. I fell asleep in every class! it was serioulsy horrible! He is a nice guy and an easy grader, if he doesn't kill you with boredom! ugh!
Dr. Awuyah is a good professor. He really enjoys the material that he teaches. As long as you know what's going on in the literature and you know how to write properly, you should pass this class with flying colors.
Can't understand what he is saying. Nice guy but not the best teacher. Shoots down personal analysis of books unless you agree with his. Doesn't give notes. Lectures are boring as well as the books but all the sections read the same books. He is unorganized and forgets to tell us due dates. The class never read any of the books on time.
really don't care for him at all. really hard to understand between his accent and lack of clarity. wants you to share personal analysis, but doesn't seem that interested in what you have to say. i really don't care for him at all.
He's awful. Unorganized. He assigned me a project and then someone else had a similar one and when I presented he embarrassed me in front of the class saying I did the wrong thing, but it was what he told me to do! Tried my best, he didn't agreee with anything, too critical and closed minded. Don't take him.
I had this professor for back-to-back classes in the summer and loved him. He's not a difficult teacher, but he will challenge you. Class is not boring if you read the books and can participate in discussions. He exposed us to a great deal of fantastic literature. He does have an accent, but it is easy to get used to and he is understandable.
Traditional format for a literature course. It obviously irritates him if you do not read the books assigned. Some things he says about African culture may deeply disturb you, so be careful.
He is a GREAT prof. It was hard to understand him at first, due to his accent. However, once you got used to it, it wasn't so bad. He held some great discussions and had us study alot of great literature. If you are interested in taking an interesting class, take CLS 165 with him!
Unclear assignment outlines, really incomprehensible grading practices and extremely difficult to understand, Awuyah is an awful professor for such a high level course. I'd recommend him for a low level course, but as for a 300 level or a seminar, I would take just about anyone else.
Avoid him. Seriously. I'm a very good student with a high gpa and a good work ethic, and I'm telling you this class was ridiculous. His expectations are through the roof...almost impossible. He also has a bit of an attitude problem. And lastly, if you are forced to take him, do NOT get caught on your cellphone! He will humiliate you.
absolutely ridiculous and unrealistic deadlines. no one could get the reading and writing done...no one.
This is a World Drama class we read plays but he refers to the play as a "book." We never discuss how the play could be produced, what effect a director or actor could have on the work. He asks for opinions but if one has an opinion which differs from his he makes a face and ignores the speaker. Accent is VERY DIFFICULT to understand!
He treats this 100 level gen ed class like it is a 300 or 400 level major requirement. This class is only open to non-english majors but he treats everyone like they are an english major. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. He is close minded when it comes to personal opinions. If you do not agree with his view of the works you will get a poor grade in the class
He started to cry in class the other day and said we treat him inhumanly...he did not like the fact that when he repeatedly made things unclear we got frustrated and began to ask each other what we thought he wanted. He gives assignments that are almost impossible....I WONT EVER TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM AGAIN!
Definitely not recommended. Accent is thick, but not incomprehensible. Choice in books vary from engaging to dull. Paper prompts are incredibly vague, making writing papers difficult. Traditionally dry lecture class, chapter by chapter review, so I fell asleep in class all the time because he was so boring!
I think That Professor Awuyah is great! All of the readings are very interesting. It bothers me that people have so much difficulty understanding his accent. Yes it is strong, is it hard to understand? NO. His class is great and all the texts enrich your mind. I would take him again for sure! Also, he's super nice!
This class was very interesting, but he was an awful professor. The exams were all essay format. His opinion is the only right answer. The grading system is really odd. I put a lot of work into this course, and could not achieve an A on anything. Thank god for attendance.
When you have 30 years teaching experience in U.S., you should understand what the students want to learn from you. No rubric, vague syllabus and grading, unorganized lecturing. Dry lectures, boring explanations. I thought someone is forcing him to teach something in English.
Don't take it, he doesn't speak words that are understandable. I would've gotten an A in any other writing emphasis class but his. should've looked at this before I took the class. DOn't make same mistake I did. I hated class.
I would NEVER recommend taking Dr. Awuyah to anyone that has the option. It's his way or the highway, no exceptions. He treats this class as if it is a 300 or 400 level class. No rubrics, never gave due dates until the class before the assignment was due, unclear grading system, extremely narrow-minded, and blatantly rude to students
He is a great guy, but an awful professor. He will not give out an A if his life depended on it. He grades papers so harshly for a 100 level coursegen ed. He took off so many points on papers and essays for "style" and then if you ask what that means he will not tell you. He takes off points for grammar but his textbook has so many mistakes.
Professor Awuyah is a nice person, but can not teach to save his life. I made the mistake of blindly taking him and really regret it. He is difficult to understand, gets frustrated when you ask basic questions, won't give you any due dates until a day or two before the assignment, and makes the lectures extremely dry and boring.
I enjoyed the course.
Awuyah is the kindest professor at WCU. This class is very easy, but you will still get something out of it. A lot of people like to complain that he's too vague with what he expects from you on papers, assignments, etc., but that, to me, is just the go-ahead to do it anyway you want. He's really funny and has interesting insight into the books.
He gave an incredibly offensive lecture, talking about how "the Holy Ghost raped Mary." He is incredibly difficult in grading papers and will not tell you what you can do to improve when you get points off. He lectures on plot events, but gives timed essay exams based on theme.
Worst Professor I have ever had. Had him for two classes, took the second one thinking he would be better, not a chance. He is the reason teachers should be reviewed after getting tenure. Lectures were long and barely comprehensible, he never specifies what he wants from you on papers, and he's an unreasonably tough grader. Avoid at all cost.
I got an A- in this class, but I had to work like a dog for it. He was one of the most unfair graders I have ever seen. When asked why papers didn't get As, he wouldn't know. He only marked conventions wrong on papers, but took off for style and "diction." He said "even publishable grad school papers don't get As."
I'm sure Awuyah is a decent guy outside of the classroom, and an excellent scholar, but he has no business teaching whatsoever. His criteria for grading is all over the place, every comment about paper grading below is spot on. Gets angry when questions are asked - A students struggle in his class. Whoever says he's good is full of crap.
The class I was in had a lot of grade-grubbers, so excuse any of the other terrible reviews. Awuyah was so funny, and his class was extremely interesting. He's not the easiest grader, but as long as your life doesn't depend on getting an A, you'll be fine. If you want a fun, interesting class, take him. He's the funniest professor I've ever had.
Sometimes his class in enjoyable, others it's grueling and drags on and on. He is a very unfair grader, and his rubrics make no sense. He also hands them out a day before they're going to happen, so if you're sick the following class day, you're screwed. I agree with the "lectures on topics, gives timed essays on themes" statement 100%.
Impossible grader. Couldnt get higher than a C. It doesnt matter if you follow his comments on your essays. His writing prompts are vague. If you dont answer the way he wants you to, you will definitely hear it. Timed open ended quizes. Will never take again.
Worst teacher at West Chester. As a person he is great, but as a teacher he is completely useless. I have no idea why West Chester does not get rid of him. CLS165 is probably the hardest class I ever taken in 4 years. He is useless at explaining things and the syllabus mine as well be tossed in the trash.
Unnecessarily difficult. He knows his stuff, and is a very smart man but he is not a great teacher. His class is very hard, and he is not clear on what he wants from assignments. The syllabus is useless, and he changes it without notice. I've had him twice, the other for World Lit, and his class is harder then some ENG 400 seminars i've taken.
He is not only a bad professor, but close-minded. He calls on students randomly asking unclear questions, and when a student answers he rejects their answer if it is not the specific one he is looking for. There were times he was very rude to students and talked down to them, resulting in even less class participation.
Never in my life have I ever had a class as unorganized as this one. We had a project, and when we asked when it was due, he said he didn't know. Most essays done were IN CLASS, 20 mins before class was over. I never knew how much I had to read or when because he never specified. He also cut our exam short, which I don't think is allowed...? AVOID.
He's really bad at teaching. Grading is stupidly hard on you and he's hard to understand. You can have an interpretation of a text but that doesn't matter, only his does, which you must jot down in your notes for every tiny subtle hint he gives or you will fail.
Do not take him!! He is one of the worst professors I've ever had. He is completely unorganized, forgets what he assigns to read for class, and he grades ridiculously hard. He asks students questions that make no sense and gets annoyed when no one knows the answer. Stay away!!
Hands down the worst professor Ive ever had. Unorganized and sloppy yet has the nerve to grade students harshly on assignments, he lectures for most of the class and he is so boring. He DOES NOT follow his syllabus at all, and will quiz you on material WEEKS after he lectures about it. Biggest mistake I made was taking his class. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Dr. Awuyah is in no doubt a brilliant man and extremely passionate about his studies. That being said, he grades like an absolute mad man. Gives 20 minute in class essays on two separate prompts, then grades said essay for grammar, style, and structure. It's absolutely ludicrous considering my actual writing course would never grade like this.
This guy.. is something else. Super super unorganized, and when it comes to giving notes, its him just scribbling random words across the board. Does not give enough time for exams, and with the stupid amount of harsh grading, its hard to claw an A out of this guy. The first exam I took, almost everyone got a C+. Do not take this guy, its bad.
Youll drop a letter grade if you miss more than 4 classes, this guy will not give an A out. No one in my class got an A. Its all Bs and mostly Cs. Grades SO harshly, its the most nonsense crap Ive ever seen.
Just dont
taught me well
He's a good teacher but his grading style is awful like it doesn't make sense. and he grade the paper worst then an english teach and makes you read books that he wrote and don't buy the book waste of money every book is only. good teacher worst grader.
The worst. Uncomfortable atmosphere, difficult to understand (has a thick accent), few things are graded. The textbook is his own so its a mini-monopoly. Participation and attendance matter v much. His tests and quizzes are ridiculous, his grading is unclear and tough. Writing emphasis class, not taught writing, then graded on writing. Hes awful
Grading is ridiculously nitpicky. Does not tolerate opinions that differ from his own. Avoid at all costs.
This is by far the most bizarre class I've ever had. The material isn't confusing, and he's an alright lecturer, but the way the class, assignments, and due dates are organized is incredibly difficult to understand. The vast majority of the questions students end up asking are about WHAT we're supposed to do, not actually HOW we should do it.
He asks for a huge deal of content in a very claustrophobic page limit (our longest paper was four pages, and the rubric detailing what to include was nearly as long). His feedback on papers is always extremely vague, so it's really hard to genuinely improve, or even gauge what his expectations are. Changes due dates often and without warning.
One of the most difficult professors. Grades with no clear rubrics, d/n follow student objectives, takes points off for ridiculous things, & has nonexistent communication. Spent considerable amount of money on the books & only covered half. Very unorganized, & has 2 different & insane attendance policies listed on syllabus. Save yourself the stress
I would give him a zero if I could. Be aware that he will say he does not give As. If you work extremely hard you might pull off a B. Unclear instructions on assignments and poor feedback. Comes across as condescending sometimes. Avoid him if at all possible. He treats this 100 -level course as a Graduate level course!
This class is the most useless thing I have ever done in my whole life. The professor has no care for his students and does not grade anything in a timely manner. My essay that I wrote a month ago still hasn't been graded.
Poor communication-Doesn't use d2l, so write assignments down On week 10 or so slams you with deadlines ie reading 24 pages, peer report, draft assigned on monday, expected completion on wednesday Reading intensive, often expected to read 20-40 pages between classes if you're stuck with him, good luck, you're gonna need it
Chris is by far the most disorganized professor I have taken. He nitpicks every single thing you write too. As a person, he is really caring and wants what's best for his students, but he does it in such a brutal way. For a freshman-level class, he's way too tricky and harsh towards the class in general. If you can take someone else, please do.
Dr. Awuyah is my least favorite professor I have ever taken. He was extremely misogynistic in both the interpretation of our readings and in his classroom interactions with women as well. Unfortunately his African Studies class was required by my major and I urge anyone who has to take this man to do so with caution.
Do not take this professor. Full stop He grades EXTREMELY DIFFICULTY. If you consistently get As in other writing classes, expect a B or C+. Lectures are basically worthless, but he grades attendance very harshly. DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK. All readings are public domain. Just look them up. For your own sake- DO NOT TAKE HIM.
I received As in all my other English classes but I will be lucky to get a C- in his. He nitpicks everything that you do and believes his class is the only thing you have on your plate. He forces you to buy the textbook HE wrote for over 100$. I strongly recommend avoiding him at all costs your GPA and wallet will thank you.
He was an awful teacher. He repeated spewed his democratic views. If you spoke and answer that disagreed with him he would fail you. He would force us to call him master
the most work-intensive class I have ever taken, worse than the 400-level seminars I've had. is SO unclear with directions, gives the BARE MINIMUM with guidance, and his syllabus can barely be considered a syllabus because of how unorganized it is. do not take unless ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY! literally only taking this to fulfill eng requirements. 0/10
I had a 1600 word review written for this professor but realized i could only write 350. Trust me when i say you do not want to take this class unless you ABSOLUTELY have to. The other reviews are not dramatic he is passive aggressive, rude, hard to understand, and a harsh grader who is unwilling to compromise. Proceed with caution.
This man gets a bad rap unnecessarily; yes, his lectures are old school and can be boring (no slides, just him talking), but as long as you attend class regularly and stay on top of the readings, his class can be fairly enjoyable. I also found the course content very interesting, so that definitely helps when choosing classes.
Bad teacher his problems include but are not limited to a lack of communication skills, ineffective teaching methods, inconsistency in grading, or a lack of engagement with students. It's essential to address any concerns you have through proper channels
No matter what you do it is impossible to get an A.
I don't like writing bad reviews, but he is a tough grader. There is a lack of understanding. He does not have a slideshow; he just lectures. It was often repetitive. He also does not understand how AI TurnItIn works, because we were all receiving poor grades for AI when we didn't use it.
